Redman has been in the international spotlight since his self-titled debut album was released in 1993. Since then, he has collaborated with a plethora of celebrated artists such as Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, The Dave Matthews Band, Quincy Jones, B.B. King, The Roots, Yo Yo Ma, Dianne Reeves and Stevie Wonder.

Joshua Redman released his newest album Walking Shadows with the Joshua Redman Quartet in May 2013. Since its release, Walking Shadows has received rave reviews from critics around the world.

Sue Schick Receives Prestigious Helena Devereux Women in Leadership Award n September 24, the Main Line Chamber of Commerce and Devereux, a leading nonprofit behavioral health organization, honored Sue Schick, CEO of UnitedHealthcare of PA, as this year’s recipient of the 2013 Helena Devereux Women in Leadership Award. Business leaders such as Susan Manbeck Corbett, the First Lady of Pennsylvania, attended the event. Ms. Schick received the award at the 5th Annual Gold Leaf Celebration and Luncheon at the Philadelphia Country Club in Gladwyne, PA. Named after Devereux’s founder, Helena T. Devereux, the award recognizes outstanding female professionals whose work has impacted the Greater Main Line region in the areas of business excellence, community service, exceptional women’s leadership and the advancement of all employees.

The Zombie Mud Run “Haunts” Morey’s Piers This October a zombie apocalypse is taking over the boardwalk of Wildwoods, NJ. On October 12, 2013, Morey’s Piers, along with co-sponsors the Greater Wildwoods Tourism Improvement & Development Authority and the City of Wildwood, is hosting The Zombie Mud Run for the first time ever. Taking place along the beach and piers, the thrilling 5K obstacle race challenges runners to eat or be eaten as they hurdle obstacles including huge sand mounds, the ocean, slides and “quicksand.” Participants are invited to register as either a “Human,” with the mission to save the human race by escaping the living dead, or as a “Zombie,” who will “hunt” the “Human” runners adding an extra degree of challenge to the race. The gates open at 7 a.m. with race times starting every 30 minutes from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. To participate as a “Human” or “Zombie,” runners must be at least 14 years of age or older and pre-register at www.thezombiemudrun.com. Civil War Historian Visits Library on October 13

cclaimed Civil War historian and prolific author and speaker, Allen C. Guelzo, will bring the epic three-day battle of Gettysburg vividly to life at Tredyffrin Public Library, 582 Upper Gulph Road in Strafford, on Sunday, October 13 at 2 p.m. In his new book Gettysburg: The Last Invasion, one hundred and fifty years later, Guelzo shares a brilliant untold history of the battle with his impeccable knowledge and proficiency for detail.

Guelzo, the Henry R. Luce Professor of the Civil War Era and Director of Civil War Era Studies at Gettysburg College, will speak about his latest work, providing the many faces, sights, and sounds of nineteen-century combat as well as the ravages of wartime civilian life. Guelzo is not only a prolific author, but an outstanding orator who bring scholarly storytelling to the library.

Jay Winik, author of April 1865, says of Guelzo’s new book, published in May by Alfred A. Knopf, “Gettysburg: The Last Invasion is fresh, fascinating, and compellingly provocative. It is a marvelous book that deserves to be read and savored. And it deserves to be on the bookshelf of all Civil War buffs.”

Russian Vocal Ensemble LYRA to Perform he Russian vocal ensemble LYRA, from St. Petersburg Russia, will perform at Church of the Redeemer, Bryn Mawr on Thursday, October 17 at 7 p.m.

Through its performances, the group introduces the enormous musical heritage of the Russian Orthodox Church, as well as traditions of Russian folk music especially to those who are interested in Russian history and culture. The repertoire is quite diverse ranging from ancient songs of the Orthodox Church to works of little-known, but remarkable composers of the 18th through 20th centuries, as well as famous masters: Bortniansky, Tchaikovsky, Tchesnokov, Gretchaninov, Rachmaninov, Stravinsky and others. The group performs different folk songs of lyric, dancing and ritual nature in the arrangements of great choral music masters. LYRA performs its own arrangements of folk songs and secular songs of Russian classics, such as Taneev, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov.

LYRA is an ensemble of professional musicians, most of whom are students or postgraduates of the St. Petersburg Conservatory, who work in different choirs throughout St. Petersburg. In 2001, it was awarded the Montreux (Switzerland) international choral festival diploma and in 2005 it was a winner at the Coleraine International Choral Festival (Northern Ireland).

The Tango Fire Company of Buenos Aires was formed in 2005 and premiered in Singapore in April of that year. Winterthur Invites Guests Young and Old to Truck and Tractor Day interthur invites wheel lovers of all ages to Truck and Tractor Day, Saturday, October 5, 2013, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This popular family event celebrates autumn and the history of farming at Winterthur, and promises plenty of hands-on fun and discovery for everyone.

Families will have the opportunity to investigate more than 30 vehicles that help keep Winterthur’s 1,000 acres looking so glorious year-round. Junior firefighters are invited to climb on and explore Winterthur Fire Department vehicles, play “dress up” with firefighter gear, put out a “fire” with the pumper truck, and take home helmets and badges.

Children ages 4 to 12 can safely climb a tree just like a professional arborist. Jim Savage, Instructor of Arboriculture at Penn State University, will share his knowledge of trees and oversee the climbing. All climbers will wear safety harnesses and will be supervised for their ascent.

The beautiful autumn weather and changing leaves will be showcased on special hayrides.

Guests of all ages can milk Winterthur’s mechanical cow, then get creative with farm- and tractor-related crafts in the bright and spacious Brown Horticulture Learning Center. Barbecue and ice cream are available for purchase, and visitors can pick up a unique Winterthur item at the Museum Store’s outpost at Truck and Tractor Day. Guests are also invited to bring their cameras to capture submissions for the Truck and Tractor Day photo contest. The winner will receive a family membership (or renewal) to Winterthur. Truck and Tractor day is a reminder of Winterthur’s rich agricultural history. Henry Francis du Pont began taking courses at the Bussey Institution, Harvard’s college of practical agriculture and horticulture in 1901, and assumed responsibility for managing his father’s estate in 1914. He was responsible for developing Winterthur’s farmland and raising a prizewinning herd of Holstein-Friesian cows. By 1925 Winterthur had its own turkey, chicken, sheep, pig, and dairy farms as well as vegetable and flower gardens, and greenhouses.

The Brown Horticulture Learning Center opened in 2012 and is an important facet in the future of agriculture and horticulture at Winterthur.

“When I sang my first scat solo in my college jazz band, it was apparent that my years as a clarinet player had shaped my singing.

A bandmate noted that my voice and note choices sounded like my jazz clarinet solos,” she says.

In her third year at Goucher College, she picked up a banjo that she found in a friend’s dormitory closet. “I’d been wanting to learn to play a chordal instrument to facilitate my songwriting,” says the Merion Station native. Selftaught and using only bar chords, she created quirky chord progressions and ever-changing meters as she found harmonies to match her vocal melodies.

In August at a concert packed to capacity at the Painted Bride Art Center, Sami Hope released Untangle the Threads, her debut album of original songs. On the album, Sami Hope’s soulful, sultry voice navigates an organic, eclectic mix of light, airy textures in “Why We’re Here,” the funky beats of “Buzzin’,” and the gritty rock elements of “Facing West.”

In “So Easy to Give In” and “Walls” she shares her search for love and self-fulfillment, while the haunting “Tidal Wave” illuminates her nightmares. Her voice is pure and clear in “Colliding Like Galaxies,” a paean to the mysteries of the universe.

The album is a collaboration with Alfred Goodrich of Silvertone Studios in Ardmore, PA. They drew upon Sami Hope’s vocal and banjo blueprints to create full-band versions of her songs.

Among the dozen studio musicians who lent their talents to the project are Chuck Treece, frontman for the 1980s skate punk band McRad, on drums; Kevin Hanson, guitarist in the ‘90s alternative rock band Huffamoose and with The Roots, on electric and baritone guitar; and jazz musician Chuck Gottesman on trumpet, flugelhorn and trombone. Along with banjo and vocals, Sami Hope played clarinet, steel drum, and glockenspiel.

The chaturangui and Indian slide guitar are courtesy of Mike “Slo-Mo” Brenner, formerly the leader of the indie folk band the Low Road. Goodrich shows his skills not only on cello and bass guitar but also on bouzouki, mandolin, melodica, erhu and guiro.

P H I L LY T A P T E A S E R – A N E V E N I N G he tenth installment of Philly Tap Teaser, an evening of tap dance and jazz music, will be presented on November 2, 2013, 8 p.m., at LaRose Jazz Club, 5531 Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia, PA. Produced by Take It Away Dance Productions, and directed by professional tap dancer and choreographer Pamela Hetherington, the concert will feature a dynamic line-up of Philadelphia tap dancers, along with live jazz accompaniment by drummer, Robert H. Henderson, pianist, Paul Pelusi and bassist, Nimrod Speaks. General admission tickets are $20, and students, senior citizens and children under age 10 can purchase discounted tickets for $10.

Founded in 2008, Philly Tap Teaser is a bi-yearly performance series for tap dancers and jazz musicians. “I founded the Tap Teaser series in 2008 to give tap dancers and jazz musicians a consistent performance opportunity and to provide a way to rebuild audiences for tap and jazz music,” says Hetherington. “Tap dance and jazz music are both

Over the course of almost six years and nine successful performances, Philly Tap Teaser has showcased 90 tap artists and 20 jazz musicians. Philly Tap Teaser was the 2011 recipient of a grant from Dance/UP & the Barra Foundation and is a member of the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance.

On November 2, 2013, the series will celebrate its tenth show at Germantown’s LaRose Jazz Club, a 125-seat venue, which is easily accessible by public transportation and offers ample free parking. Although the time has flown since the first show in 2008, Hetherington notes, “Producing this show is a labor of love, and it wouldn’t have continued without dedicated audience members, supporters and of course, the dancers and the musicians who believed in the show from the very beginning.” A fantastic mix of tap dancers will join the bill for the evening, including master hoofers Robert

Hetherington, a Northeast Philadelphia native, joined Philadelphia tap company, Tap Team Two & Company, in 1996, at the age of sixteen, and was a principle dancer with the company for fifteen years. Since 2004, Pam has directed, performed in and choreographed for a number of tap dance and jazz music projects in Philadelphia and Charlottesville, VA, including Philly Tap Teaser, a tap and jazz music performance series, a bi-yearly community master class series, and her own project-based, pick-up dance company called Take It Away.
