The Encampment will take place at the 15-acre Lighthouse Field in North Philadelphia (Front and Erie Streets) from October 11 to 13. Participants will come together for a weekend of camping, Scout activities, competitions, campfire and overall fun. “Many of our city-based scouts don’t often get the opportunity to experience camping in the wilderness, so we decided to bring the scout camp experience back to the city,” said Brian Wallace, Philadelphia Encampment Director and COLBSA volunteer. “This weekend will be a great experience for hundreds of Scouts to learn and compete in scouting skills and events. On Saturday afternoon, we hope the public will visit to see first-hand what Scouting is all about.” The Camporee is open to the public on Saturday, October 12, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. to see Scouting in action. The main events of the weekend will feature activities such as archery, pioneering, emergency preparedness, cooking, camping, first aid and other core scout skills. Additional attractions, such as rope bridges and a two-story pioneering ferris wheel will also be a part of the fun. Saturday evening, Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers will preside over a special campfire for all Scouts and Scouters to enjoy. In addition to camping activities, the Cradle of Liberty Council will also begin an early launch of its annual Scouting for Food drive. The fifth group painted benches around the Agony in the Garden shrine and The Pieta statue. “Volunteering at the Malvern Retreat House felt like a retreat, said Marta Guron, Assistant Professor of Chemistry. “In doing physical service on the grounds, we were blessed with an atmosphere of serenity and peace which served us psychologically and spiritually. The experience brought our group from Villanova together, as well as introducing many of us to this beautiful space. As a token of gratitude for their volunteer work, Malvern Retreat House provided the Wildcats with a lunch of pizza and drinks, as well as a personal thank-you greeting from president, James A. Fitzsimmons. Malvern Retreat House is extremely grateful for the group’s service to revamp the grounds. “The day was beautiful, said Bill Pastino, Malvern Retreat House’s Facilities Manager. “They went above and beyond to help us. Because of the volunteers’ efforts to help beautify Malvern’s grounds, visitors to the Retreat House will continue to enjoy the beautiful surroundings that draw people to Malvern, the oldest and largest Catholic retreat house in the United States. Michael Tubridy and James Keane in Concert he Philadelphia Ceili Group will host Chieftains founding member Micheal Tubridy and All Ireland button accordionist James Keane in concert at the Commodore Barry/ Irish Center, Carpenter Lane and Emlen Street, Philadelphia on Saturday, October 12, at 8 p.m. Michael Tubridy, a native of Kilrush, County Clare, is known for his talents on flute, tin whistle, and concertina, an instrument common to his native County Clare. While studying at UDC in the 50s, Michael began attending the Thomas Street Piper’s Club, where he met Paddy Moloney and Sean Potts, establishing a strong musical connection, performing together in concerts, sessions, and making a number of radio programs together. Along with Paddy, Sean Potts, and Martin Fay, he was one of the founding members of The Chieftains in 1962. Born in Drimnagh, Dublin in 1948, James Keane took up the button accordion at age six, drawing his primary inspiration from his mother, father and uncles all of whom were musicians and the rich cultural legacy of their home counties of Longford and Clare. By the age of ten, he had become a fixture on the late 1950’s Dublin traditional scene where

he literally walked among the giants of the music – Seamus Ennis, Leo Rowsome, Sonny Brogan, Tommy Reck – and homed his skills under their guidance and artistry. While still in his early teens James co-founded what would become, in short years, one of Ireland’s most heralded music ensembles, the Castle Ceili Band. Along with his brother, fiddler Sean Keane, also a member of the Chieftains and flute player Mick O’Connor, he managed to assemble a roster of musicians that bridged three generations and whose names, today, seem to have been plucked directly from the annals of Irish music history. Joe Ryan, John Dwyer, Liam Rowsome, Michael Tubridy, Bridie Lafferty and West Clare fiddler John Kelly, whose parallel commitment to both the Castle Ceili Band and Sean O Riadas Ceoltoiri Cualann (later to include Michael Tubridy and Sean Keane) created as noted writer and musician Fintan Vallely has termed it, “The Melting Pot from which the Chieftains would emerge. PCG Members $13; General public $15. Philadelphia Orchestra Holds Fred’s Footsteps Event Breaks Fundraising Records Free Neighborhood Concert F at Temple University November 6 hiladelphia Orchestra Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin leads his first Neighborhood Concert when the Orchestra heads up North Broad Street this fall for a FREE concert at Temple University’s Performing Arts Center, Wednesday, November 6, at 7 p.m. The concert is presented by Wells Fargo, a supporter of the Orchestra’s Neighborhood Concerts since 2003.“I have been looking forward to conducting my first Neighborhood Concert since I was introduced to Philadelphia after being named music director in 2010,” said NézetSéguin. “On that day I had the great pleasure of attending a Neighborhood Concert the Orchestra was performing in Upper Darby, and I saw immediately the importance of not just opening our doors at the Kimmel Center to the community, but also going into neighborhoods and reaching those who may not otherwise have the chance to visit us in our home. Having led my first Martin Luther King Tribute Concert with the Orchestra last January, I have seen first-hand the joy that is created when the Orchestra brings its music out to the citizens of the region. I am eager to continue this tradition with my first Neighborhood Concert at Temple University on November 6 and further strengthen the vital connection that exists between the musicians and the community.” The program for the Neighborhood Concert features a variety of family-friendly works, including Bernstein’s Overture to Candide, Britten’s Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Purcell, Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet and Polonaise from Eugene Onegin, Saint-Saëns’s “Bacchanal” from Samson and Delilah, and Ravel’s Bolero. The Neighborhood Concert is free and seating is on a first come, first served basis. Tickets, however, are required and can be reserved by calling 1-800-298-4200; online at www.templeperformingartscenter.org; or in person at the Liacouras Box Office at 1776 N. Broad Street. Tickets will be available beginning Wednesday, October 16, at noon. The Temple Performing Arts Center (TPAC) is located in the former Baptist Temple on the University campus, at 1913 N. Broad St., Philadelphia. For information on The Philadelphia Orchestra, online visit www.philorch.org.

Public Library and Conestoga High School Students Present a Dramatic Reading “October Mourning: A Song for Matthew Shepard” redyffrin Public Library and students from Conestoga High School’s Drama Club, Art Department, and AntiDefamation League (ADL) Club will present a visual and dramatic reading of October Mourning: A Song for Matthew Shepard on Sunday, October 20 at 4 p.m. at Tredyffrin Public Library, 582 Upper Gulph Road, Strafford. October Mourning: A Song for Matthew Shepard, a novel in verse by Lesléa Newman, chronicles the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student who was lured from a bar in Laramie, Wyoming on October 6, 1998, beaten, and left to die. Newman’s book is a deeply felt response to the events of that tragic day, using her poetic imagination to create fictitious monologues from various points of view. Newman explains, “By telling Matt’s story in the voices of the silent witnesses (the fence he was tied to, the stars that watched over him, the deer who kept him company, etc.) I hoped to create a compelling narrative that would enable

T

young readers to experience the intense emotions of that day which resonated around the world.” In the free library presentation, original works of art created by Conestoga art students will highlight the dramatic reading of Newman’s poems. After the reading, the Conestoga ADL Club will host a discussion. Registration for the October Mourning event is available on Tredyffrin Public Library’s website, tredyffrinlibraries.org, or by calling Laurie Doan at 610-688-7092 ext. 200. Lesléa Newman is the author of 65 books for readers of all ages. October Mourning received a Stonewall Honor from the American Library Association. Ms. Newman’s literary awards include poetry fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Massachusetts Artists Foundation. From 2008-2010 she served as the poet laureate of Northampton, MA. Currently she is a faculty member of Spalding University’s brief-residency MFA in Writing program.
