Meiravi Quartet Concert of “Firsts” Wynnewood Composer Highlighted on Program er, Peter Nocella, at their Sunday, November 17 concert. The selected composers present a microcosm of one hundred years of music history. Nocella, a native Philadelphian, with roots both in South Philadelphia and the Main Line, as the quartet’s composer-in-residence, wrote his String Quartet No.1 in Blue for the Quartet’s debut performance in 2011, in conjunction with PIFA’s theme, Paris 1910-20. Based on a three note motive from Arnold Schoenberg’s (1912) Pierrot Lunaire, this work melodically driven, also contains contemporary overtones of blues and jazz. Bestselling author, educator and coach Rachel Simmons will speak to parents on Thursday, January 9 at 7 p.m. in the West-Wike Theatre of The Agnes Irwin School. Children’s book author, illustrator and artist Jerry Pinkney will appear at Germantown Friends School’s Friends Free Library as the inaugural speaker in the newly-launched Community Writers Series November 19. from the greater GFS community, it will also highlight authors from the Germantown neighborhood. “Germantown’s storied history includes numerous writers who were born here, like Louise May Alcott, or who wrote about Germantown, like Lorene Cary, or who lived here, like Jerr y Pinkney,” says Anne G e r b n e r, U p p e r School English teacher, director of GFS’s Independent Studies program and member of the committee that developed the concept for the series. “This series will honor writers with strong ties to Germantown in a lovely library that has opened its doors to all readers for 140 years.” See New Community Writers Series on page 3
