In addition to playing Mary, Lakis plays 12 other characters, including some of the men she dates, her aunt Kathy, Maggie Lakis stars in Act II Playhouse’s production of an Irish bartender, and a five“The Twelve Dates of Christmas.” Photo/John Flak year-old boy who unexpectedly opens her heart. “Maggie has a wealth of experience: comedic, dramatic, musical, puppetry even. Egyptian Lawyer-Activist to Talk at Bryn Mawr College awyer-Activist Ragia Omran – who received the 30th annual RFK Human Rights Award in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 21 – will give a public talk entitled “Acting for Change: Human Rights and the Egyptian Revolution,” at Bryn Mawr College on Monday, November 25, at 4 p.m. in the Ely Room of the Wyndham Alumnae House. The talk is free and open to the public. Omran has been at the forefront of the human rights movement in Egypt for 20 years. In 1994, she was a member of the FGM Task Force, which led a campaign that successfully outlawed the practice of female genital mutilation in public hospitals. At the height of the Arab Spring, when many wondered how the energy of the uprising could be harnessed to promote lasting political freedoms, she co-founded the Almasry Alhurr Movement, calling for government accountability, social justice, and an end to emergency law. As an attorney, she joined her colleagues in representing hundreds of civilians ordered to military trial as part of the Front to Defend Egypt Protesters. She is a leading member of several of Egypt’s legal advocacy organizations, including: the New Woman Foundation, which advances reproductive rights and the political participation of women, and the No to Military Trials for Civilians Campaign. She is also a volunteer at the Hisham Mubarak Law Center, representing victims of torture, arbitrary arrest, and detention. In her courageous pursuit of human rights, she has lived through arrest and assault. Omran holds a bachelor of arts in political science and history from Bryn Mawr, a bachelor of arts in law from Cairo University, and a master’s of law from Queen Mary College in London, where she was a British Council Chevening Scholar.

ing original pieces and popular traditional songs. (*Zach DePue will not be performing at TPAC.) The title of the album, “When It’s Christmas Time,” is a reference to a carol originally written by the brothers’ dad, Wallace DePue, Sr., which was later enriched with an arrangement by Alex DePue. The brothers, who have been playing Christmas programs together since they could hold violins, recorded the CD as a loving tribute to their dad. The album includes such popular songs as Sleigh Ride, O Holy Night, Good King Wenceslas, The Christmas Song, a special arrangement of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas bringing a jazzed up bluegrass shuffle to this classic holiday tune and a medley of Carols. In addition there is a mix of standard arrangements of Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring and Ave Maria, as well as a more recent composition entitled The Fat Man. The DePue Brothers Band encompasses a vivid blend of bluegrass, classical, and rock genres. Each of the four DePue brothers is a classical virtuoso in his own right, and brings rich and diverse talents to their sound. Performing with the band keeps them busy much of the year, while the brothers’ individual musical endeavors continue—Zach with The Indianapolis Symphony as concertmaster, and with Time for Three; Jason with The Philadelphia Orchestra; Alex with his solo endeavors and with DePue/DeHoyos; and Wallace with his company, Concert Instruments.com and The Philly POPS. Each band member brings impressive credentials to the band, with manager Don Liuzzi being the principal timpanist of The Philadelphia Orchestra. As a family they have been making music together for over 25 years. They were named “Musical Family of America” in 1989 by presidential decree, were the subject of a nationally televised PBS documentary in 1993, and two brothers (Jason and Zach) were featured in the film documentary Music From the Inside Out in 2005. Their first album as brothers, “Classical Grass,” sold out of its first printing. Coming together with Tony Trischka, Mark Cosgrove, Don Liuzzi, Mike Munford, Kevin MacConnell, Jordan Tice and Rodney Whittenberg, the band began performing and recording in 2004. “When It’s Christmas Time” is available on on CD Baby, iTunes, Amazon.com, Rhapsody, all the online stores affiliated with Tune Core and locally at the FYE store at Broad and Chestnut St. in Center City Philadelphia. For more information about the DePue Brothers Band, visit their website at http://www.depuebrothersband.com. Getting Ready for the Holidays

1812 Productions Presents “The Big Time: New Vaudeville for the Holidays hiladelphia’s all comedy theatre company presents its newest original production, “The Big Time: New Vaudeville for the Holidays. The show continues 1812’s tradition of creating new work based in classic comedy styles, celebrating an era or area of comedic history. Past productions include “Always a Lady (women in comedy), “Double Down (classic double acts), “Our Show of Shows (original and classic material celebrating Sid Caesar’s “Your Show of Shows), and the audience favorite “This Is The Week That Is (political satire). Created and directed by Jennifer Childs, “The Big Time reunites Ms. Childs with Scott Greer, Dave Jadico and Tony Braithwaite, the creative team that originated 1812 Productions’ first such production, also called “The Big Time Ready for 1812 Productions’ “The Big Time: New Vaudeville for the Holidays are, from left – Scott Greer, Dave Jadico, (2000) – a revue of classic Greg Nix and Jennifer Childs, running November 29 vaudeville routines – and welthrough December 31. comes 1812 favorite Greg Nix to the process. Ms. Childs says, “A lot has happened in the twelve years since we first did The Big Time. We’ve explored so many different comedic forms that it allowed us to take a more expansive view of vaudeville. “The Big Time: New Vaudeville for the Holidays pairs the structure of a classic vaudeville bill with original material and styles that cross genres and time periods, creating a multifaceted and unique theatrical experience. From a bus stop in 1950s America where the foley has a mind of its own, to a pantomimed prom in the 1920s, to Buster Keaton-style mayhem at a modern day Italian bakery—“The Big Time sets them up and knocks them down, scene by scene. With nods to Gallagher & Shean, Burns & Allen, The Smothers Brothers, Eva Tanguay and many more, “The Big Time gives us loquacious cowboys, tango battles in a Spanish garden, swaggering tennis clowns, and helium-high burlesque. To capture the scope of this New Vaudeville, “The Big Time features an original and devised sound design from Christopher Colucci, costumes by Alisa Sickora Kleckner, sets by Lance Kniskern, and a lighting design by Shelley Hicklin. Ms. Childs continues, “Twelve years ago we were really trying to recreate a vintage experience and prove that those old sketches, songs and jokes still held up after all these years. We really clung to the original material and wanted everything to be historically accurate. Now we’re looking at the form and asking how we use that vocabulary to make our own, more contemporary vaudeville comedy that is still sincere and not ironic. It’s a challenge— but a fun one. “The Big Time: New Vaudeville for the Holidays will play from November 29 through December 31 at Plays & Players Theatre, 1714 Delancey Street. Opening Night will be Wednesday, December 4 at 7 p.m. Jennifer Childs, Scott Greer, Dave Jadico, and Greg Nix will perform at all shows. Tony Braithwaite will join the ensemble from December 18 through December 31. Tickets range from $25 to $40 and are available at 215-592-9560 or at www.1812productions.org.

“Frost/Nixon” Philadelphia Premiere at New City Stage Company New City Stage Company presents their second show of the 2013-2014 Season “Frost/Nixon,” written by Peter Morgan, starring Dan Olmstead as Richard Nixon and Russ Widdall as David Frost. A briskly entertaining true account of the 1977 face-off between British talk show host David Frost and recently resigned president Richard Nixon. Determined to resurrect his career, Frost risks everything on a series of in-depth interviews in order to extract an apology from Nixon for the conflict in Vietnam and Watergate scandal. The cagey Nixon, however, is equally bent on redeeming himself in his nation’s eyes. In the television age, image is king, and both men are desperate to outtalk and upstage each other as the cameras roll. The result is the interview that sealed a president’s legacy. The show runs from December 5 - January 5 at the Adrienne Theatre Main Stage. Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.NewCityStage.org or calling 215-5637500. The Ralston Center Board of Managers established the Caregiver Award in 2004 to recognize and honor the vital work of Certified Nursing Assistants, especially for their work with older adults. Award recipients are chosen by their employers, who cite dedication, compassion and commitment to excellence as important criteria when selecting the CNAs. “Ralston Center provides us with a way to recognize the hard work that the front-line caregivers perform every day for our most fragile elders,” Saunders House Executive Director Susan Irrgang said. “We hope the Ralston Center Caregiver Award helps to increase awareness around the importance of the role CNAs play in the healthcare of the elderly,” said Joseph A. Lukach, Chief Executive Officer of Ralston Center. “Not only do CNAs provide essential help with personal tasks, comfort and emotional support, they are an important link in the communication between patients, their families, and other health care staff.”

Local Marines Celebrate 238th Birthday he Marines of the General Smedley D. Butler Detachment of the Marine Corps League headquartered in Newtown Square celebrated the Marine Corps’ 238th Birthday

Detachment Commandant James Herbst, left, with Col. Andrew Wilcox, Commanding Officer of the Villanova/ University of Pennsylvania Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps. of its founding in Philadelphia by throwing a Grand Ball at the Paxon Hollow Country Club in Marple Township. Over 140 guests attended including Marines from Hotel Company, 2 Battalion, 5th Marines. These Marines were in the area for a reunion of their members who served together in Vietnam. Also in attendance was Colonel Andrew Wilcox, the newly arrived commanding officer of the Villanova/University of Pennsylvania Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps. The Cake Cutting Ceremony honored, by tradition, the oldest Marine, Col. George Edelmann (93) and the Youngest Marine, Commandant of the General Smedley D. Butler Detachment James Herbst. The Color Guard comprised of four Young Marines presented the Colors at the opening Ceremony. It was led by Staff Sgt (RET) James Donegan. The Marine Corps Ceremonial Buglers were Lloyd Spangler and Dan Fitzpatrick. They played the Marines Hymn as the Color Guard posted the Colors. The Guest Speaker was Joe Brooks, the Chief Executive Officer of the Liberty USO. The traditional message from the founder of the Marine Corps League and past Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, John A. Lejeune was read by Marine Bernard McGinley. The General Smedley D. Butler Detachment of the Marine Corps League, headquartered in Newtown Square, PA provides educational programs for children, historically relevant exhibits in libraries and museums, and Graveside Honor Ceremonies. It also provides assistance to wounded veterans and their families. It awarded 11 scholarships to local students in 2013. This past spring and summer there was a display in the Springfield Township Library honoring the Montford Point Marines. These first African American Marine recruits were trained separately from other recruits at Camp Montford Point, in Jacksonville, North Carolina, from 1942 to 1949 when the United States military was desegregated. The Marine Corps League was founded in 1923 by WWI Marine hero and then Maj. Gen. and Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, John A. Lejeune. Today the League boasts of a membership in excess of 76,000. Its sponsored programs include Marines Helping Marines, the Youth Physical Fitness Program, the Young Marines of the Marine Corps League, the Veterans Service Officer Program, the Marine Corps League Auxiliary, the Toys for Tots program, the Adopta-Highway program, and several scholarships. U.S. Marine Corps General Smedley D. Butler was born in West Chester and lived much of his adult life in Newtown Square. He spent many of his final years lecturing throughout the country on behalf of veterans’ causes and good government. The general was one of only two U.S. Marines awarded two Medals of Honor for heroism in two distinct military actions.
