HOPress Books Hosts First Annual Book Fair “Ekphrastic” at ManayunkRoxborough Art Center Gallery T he Manayunk-Roxborough Art Center concludes its series of 2017 exhibitions with “Ekphrastic,” a unique rhetorical device in which writing (typically poetry) is inspired by another visual art form to convey deeper symbolism and confer greater meaning. For this show, MRAC Writer-Poets were invited to choose Artist CoOp works that speak to them and create new poems and written pieces around those works, which not only forges a stronger collaboration between MRAC CoOp Artist and Writer-Poet members, but also an explosion of creativity in the MRAC community. MRAC is excited to share the results of this creative fusion and invites the community to its Opening Reception on Sunday, December 3, 2017, starting at 12 noon. Enjoy an array of visual arts with accompanying poetry, along with an aural experience while poets read their works aloud and answer questions about their processes starting at 2 p.m. The show continues December 9 & 10, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free, and donations are encouraged. MRAC is located at 419 Green Lane (rear), Philadelphia, PA 19128. Nearby free street parking is usually available and there are two free lots in the area. A year later, we added Shorehouse Books for non-humor books and in November of 2016, we launched Corner Office Books for business and professional works. To date we have more than 50 titles and 2018 is set up to be another record year.” The book fair will be held on Sunday, December 3, from 12 noon to 2 p.m., and refreshments are free for guests. “Twilight Tidings at the Tavern” at the Historic Barns-Brinton House he Chadds Ford Historical Society introduces a new event for the holiday season, “Twilight Tidings at the Tavern,” on Saturday, December 2 at the Barns-Brinton House in Chadds Ford. Celebrate the season with a historic look at the four major holidays of the 18th century winter season: Christmas, New Year’s, Twelfth Night and Candlemas. Similar to the Society’s popular Tavern Talks format, “Twilight Tidings at the Tavern” will be a 90-minute open house where you can explore the 1714 tavern at your own pace, meeting guides in authentic colonial clothing, learning about holiday celebrations of the 18th century, and enjoying samples of historic holiday foods and complimentary beverages Participate in a unique historic experience like wassail, mulled wine and at “Twilight Tidings at the Tavern” on punch. Saturday, December 2 at the Barns-Brinton Winter in colonial America House in Chadds Ford. gave people a chance to relax and unwind following the harvest and butchering seasons. People often took time to travel and visit friends and relations during the winter months. Unlike the 21st century, the winter calendar of the 18th century was not dominated by the celebration of Christmas. New Year’s and Twelfth Night were often more festive, and raucous, holiday celebrations that may last for days. “Twilight Tidings at the Taverns” is a unique historic experience in which you’ll participate in the recreation of four distinct 18th century holiday celebrations. “Twilight Tidings at the Tavern” is a 21-and-over event at the Barns-Brinton House, 630 Baltimore Pike (U.S. Route 1), Chadds Ford, PA 19317. There are two tour times available: 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Tickets are $20 ($15 for CFHS Members), and must be purchased in advance at the Society’s website, www.chaddsfordhistory.org, by phone at 610-388-7376, or in person at the Society’s office. Space is limited, and these tours will sell out. The Society’s office is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and is located at 1736 N. Creek Rd. in Chadds Ford. Visit www.chaddsfordhistory.org for information and tickets.

Guests can join Mrs. Claus as she visits the North Pole Research and Development Lab to investigate all of the newest goodies for 2017. This magical show is filled with unexpected surprises and fun for all ages in the Adventure Theater. Photo/Kristin Fitzgerald ix Flags Great Adventure, lights up the nights to magically transform into a winter wonderland for Holiday in the Park weekends and select days November 18 through January 1, 2018. More than a million glittering lights, dazzling holiday entertainment, delicious seasonal treats, Santa’s village and many of the park’s most popular rides provide the perfect setting for memorable holiday moments at Six Flags Great Adventure this winter. “Holiday in the Park at Six Flags Great Adventure not only delivers thrills, but world-class entertainment for all ages,” said Park President Neal Thurman. “This one-of-a-kind festival allows families to get away from the hustle and bustle of the season and create new traditions to enjoy for years to come.” Opening for its third season in 2017, Holiday in the Park features new attractions, shows, rides and a variety of new dining options. This incredibly immersive and magical holiday experience features 13 specially-themed areas with sights, sounds, scents and experiences coordinated to provide each section with distinct character. The event is included with all Season Passes and active Memberships. On December 9, Six Flags theme parks across the country will host Six Flags Snow Day and invite guests to participate in the world’s largest snowball fight. Participation is limited and free with theme park admission. Guests will receive soft, indoor snow balls to toss during this family-friendly event. More info will become available on the park’s website. The Central Jersey Blood Center will host a holiday blood drive December 10 in the park’s Employment Center from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Guests who donate a pint of blood will receive one theme park ticket valid for Holiday in the Park. Walk-ins are accepted, but appointments are encouraged and available by visiting the web. More info about Holiday in the Park is available at www.sixflags.com/greatadventure.
