Peace Corps Volunteer—the first American to live there. “Living Liberia,” Cherry wrote, “introduces the reader to a charming, exotic and unforgettable land, although given Liberia’s history it seems that God Himself, at times, has forgotten it. I write about the challenges (and joys) of living in a village without running water or electricity for almost two years and teaching with a principal who made up national holidays.” The principal was not one of the joys of village life, he added. Liberia was founded by freed American slaves in the 19th century and has always had a unique relationship with the United States. Its capital, Monrovia, is named for President James Monroe. “With wit, insight, and historical context,” one reviewer observed, “Robert Cherry describes life in Liberia and the people he found there, many of whom became his friends for life. Anyone curious about modern Africa, or anyone ready for an adventure tale that enthralls, amuses and confounds, will find Living Liberia a fascinating read.” After his Peace Corps service, Cherry became, in turn, a teacher, journalist, businessman and author. “Tell Me A Story” at Ethical Society In “Tell Me a Story: Nurturing our Lives through Narratives,” Hugh TaftMorales, Leader, Philadelphia Ethical Society explores storytelling as a hallmark of human civilization since the human species learned to communicate, 11 a.m., Sunday, December 3, at the Society, 1906 S. Rittenhouse Square. Especially for children, stories help make sense of an often-chaotic present, the fading past, and the indeterminate future. Ethical messages are often best translated through story as stories helped shape children’s lives, sense of self, and conception of right and wrong. All are welcome to the program, which will conclude with trimming the tree of knowledge with images of books that have influenced generations of readers. paring to strike out on their own, conspire to find any possible way to get around their overbearing, skinflint father. Complications ensue … lots of them! This immortal classic is being brought to life in an uproarious, briskly-paced new translation that sees its raucous comedy through a contemporary lens, depicting all the intergenerational intrigues of an inyour-face dysfunctional family with striking modern relevance and immediacy. French actor and playwright Jean-Baptiste Poquelin (called ‘Molière’), born in 1622, was influenced by the farcical style of the Italian commedia dell’arte in the usage of social satire and lots of broad physicality; but he developed a more accomplished structure and characters of greater depth and variety than his Italian predecessors. Molière gained great popularity already during his lifetime, enthralling Parisian audiences with such now beloved classics as The School for Wives, The Imaginary Invalid, and Tartuffe (all three of which, by the

way, have been produced at The Stagecrafters). The Miser, first performed in 1668, was an immediate ‘hit’, and has continued to be presented worldwide to this day, in a practically infinite range of venues and variants. Production performance dates are November 24 through December 10: Thursday, Friday, Saturday at 8 p.m.; Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at $21 Online (no service charge), $25 At-door. (Thursday & Friday evening performances 2-for-$32 Online, 2-for-$35 At-door.) Students with valid ID $15 At-door; seniors $22 At-door. Groups of 15 or more are offered a reduced rate of $15 a ticket, paid in advance. The box office opens 45 minutes before each performance. ing The Arizona Republic and the Main Line Times, and his freelance work has appeared in The New York Times and The Jerusalem Post, among other publications. His first book, Wilt: Larger Than Life, is a celebrated, and oft-quoted, biography of Wilt Chamberlain. Chamberlain and Cherry attended Overbrook High School, the author six years after the legendary basketball player. The author’s second book, Cherry Delight, is a memoir of his parents. “While neither of them ever led the NBA in rebounding or scoring, as did Wilt Chamberlain,” he whimsically observed, “my parents are still worth reading about, even celebrating.” Fifty years in the making, Living Liberia is the author’s favorite of his three books. A native Philadelphian – with the accent to prove it – Cherry lives in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania and Pompano Beach, Florida. He can be reached at robertcherry2@ aol.com and you can learn more about his books at www.robertcherry.org. For info, contact the Narberth Bookshop, 610-664-1112.

Zaslow has been planning social and corporate events in the Philadelphia region for more than 15 years, many of which have been held at The Cynwyd Club. The Cynwyd Club is inviting friends and neighbors to visit the newly renovated facility at the upcoming Main Line Party Expo. Admission is free. Guests who book the venue for a future event between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. on December 3 will receive 50% off the Club’s regular room rental fees. In addition visitors will have an opportunity to tour the recently renovated facility and to enjoy hors d’oeuvres catered by the resident chef. The Party Expo brings together the region’s top party planning professionals ready to meet and greet guests planning future celebrations. “It will be a fun-filled Sunday afternoon full of new ideas, new trends, giveaways, festive treats and more,” says Zaslow. The Cynwyd Club, located at 332 Trevor Lane, has been operating in Bala Cynwyd since 1913. It has withstood the test of time. In good times, the Club enjoyed bowling, tournaments, marathons, social dances and accommodated several champion squash and tennis players.
