The concert, titled “The Poet and the Peasant,” will be performed by The Merion Trio: on piano (Gilya Hodos), violin (Margaret Humphrey) and cello (Rebecca Humphrey). “We will play lesser known gems by wonderful composers,” said Gilya Hodos, the Musical Director of the Bala Cynwyd Library. “All of them were seeking to preserve their folk cultures, though they each chose different paths. The music they wrote is excellent, and we’re very happy to present it.” Hodos discussed the backgrounds of some of the composers whose work will be presented. “The great Argentinian composer Astor Piazzola, a child immigrant to New York City, learned to play Argentina’s national instrument, the bandaneon, to ease his father’s homesickness for Argentina. As his fame as a composer grew, he took the folk music genre and created a variety of complex interactions with classical and jazz music which you will hear in the music we will be performing. “Béla Bartók set out to preserve the folk music by recording and notating actual folk tunes from as many rural villages as possible. His own music is completely imbued with the complex and varied styles of these folk melodies, both actual and inspired. “Some composers, like Enrique Fernandez Arbos, felt compelled to preserve their nationSee Free Concert with The Merion Trio page 4

The community is invited to the opening reception immediately following Shabbat services, at 8:45 p.m. on Friday, November 8, 2019. Refreshments will be served. As a teenager, Brian had a serious accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down. A few years later, he discovered he was able to paint using dots which he developed into his own unique style. He fills the canvas by making one painstaking dot at a time, producing wonderful images. Prior to the accident Brian never dreamed that he would one day be an artist. With determination and spirit he is currently able to walk again with the use of crutches. Don’t miss this exciting exhibit. Congregation Beth Or is located at 239 E. Welsh Road, Maple Glen, PA. For information call Karen at 267-975-7555. The exhibit continues through December 11.

Dr. Chris Domes (left), president of Neumann University, accepts a $25,000 check from Kamal Gray, keyboard player for The Roots; Michael Harris, CEO of Best Sports Consultants; and Jahri Evans, former all-pro NFL lineman. amal Gray of The Roots was one of three donors who presented a check for $25,000 to Neumann University on October 18. Gray is the keyboard player for the Grammy Awardwinning hip-hop group and house band for The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. The funds will be used for scholarships to support current Neumann students who need financial assistance to continue their pursuit of a degree. The gift comes from Gray; Michael Harris, president and CEO of Best Sports Consultants; and Jahri Evans, a former NFL player and Super Bowl winner with the New Orleans Saints. The three selected Neumann University to receive their gift because it is one of five American colleges participating in the launch of SponsoredScholar, a program that empowers college students to initiate personalized fundraising campaigns to help pay for tuition. The platform provides guidance for students to tell their stories, customize their crowdfunding audiences, and securely route donations directly to the college. Neumann is the only SponsoredScholar university in the Philadelphia area, and all three donors are natives of the city. After the check presentation, the trio spent an hour speaking with 50 students, faculty and staff who packed the Sora Luna Café on campus to see him. The conversation, hosted by Neumann Media students Jake Loburak and Alexis Lomax, covered topics ranging from faith and smart phones to vaping and the music industry. Asked what advice they would give to an 18-year-old student, Gray offered, “listen and learn, especially from people who have experience.” Evans told students to “build your foundation on morals and ethics and learn every day.” Harris emphasized his faith in God and advised students to “do what you say you are going to do.” After the free-wheeling interview, all three joined several students who had used the SponsoredScholar program successfully for an intimate lunch in the Devine Hospitality Suite. According to Eileen Tucker, director of financial assistance at Neumann University, the program is off to a good start. “Several students have already had their campaigns fully funded,” she says. “One student raised nearly $800 in less than a weekend, in $25 increments. We don’t want students to consider leaving school because of relatively small unpaid balances. This program provides a new way for students to get the help they need and continue working toward a degree.”

PHILADELPHIA AND THE MAIN LINE’S FAVORITE WEEKLY

Join the Walk to End Alzheimer’s® on Sunday, November 10, 2019. The Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Valley Chapter anticipates more than 1,000 teams and other supporters will raise $1.6 million to fund Alzheimer’s research and the local care and support programs the chapter offers to the nearly 300,000 people in the region who are affected by Alzheimer’s or another dementia. “More than five million people in the United States have Alzheimer’s, which kills more Americans than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined,” said Walk Co-Chair, Kristin Kingery. “This disease has no cure, no way to prevent it or even slow its progression, so we appreciate every single person, company and organization that has raised or donated dollars so one day we will live in a world without Alzheimer’s.” Throughout Walk weekend, Philadelphia landmarks will be lit up in purple, including the Ben Franklin Bridge, One & Two Liberty Place, The Pyramid Club and Boathouse Row—the latter sponsored by Holman Automotive Group, Inc., Key Financial Inc. and Meadowood Senior Living. The “Paint the Town Purple” campaign, honoring not only the biggest Walk to End Alzheimer’s in the nation, but National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, launches Friday night and ends Sunday night. Under the leadership of Volunteer Walk Co-Chairs, Kristin Kingery of Bayada and Stephanie Messler of Meadowood Senior Living, the all-volunteer committee has planned family-friendly Walk day activities, special guests, VIPs and entertainment. Members of sponsor, WTXF-FOX 29’s news team will emcee the pre-walk program, which includes the hallmark of every Walk to End Alzheimer’s in the country, the Promise Garden Ceremony. This year, the ceremony will honor and welcome to the stage, five special participants who will each hold a flower in the color representing their connection to Alzheimer’s or another dementia: Jason Goldberg of Horsham, Pennsylvania, who lost his mother to vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease will hold the purple flower. Rita Cangi-Kramer of Mullica Hill, New Jersey, whose aunt has Alzheimer’s will hold the yellow flower. Shirley Dash of Southwest Philadelphia, who lost her mother to Alzheimer’s, is now an Alzheimer’s Impact Movement (AIM) Ambassador and will hold the orange flower. Kristine McDonald, age 51, of Havertown, Pennsylvania, who is living with younger-onset Alzheimer’s will hold the blue flower on stage with fiance Terrence Dougherty by her side as she shares her experience with the crowd. Lastly, seven-year old Emma Kushnier will join them, holding a white flower – which is always held by a child – symbolizing Alzheimer’s first survivor. Emma’s grandmother was diagnosed with younger-onset Alzheimer’s at the age of 59. “We look forward to the day when we actually have a survivor and can introduce him or her to the world,” said Walk Director, Samantha Sayward. “Until then, we will continue to support research and people in our area who are affected by dementia with the help of our very generous walkers, sponsors and supporters.” About the Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Valley Chapter The Alzheimer’s Association® is the world leader in Alzheimer’s research and support. The Delaware Valley Chapter, headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is the local arm of the national nonprofit organization, and operates Regional and Branch Offices that serve 18 counties in Delaware, South Jersey, and Southeastern Pennsylvania. The Chapter provides programs and services to more than 294,000 individuals and their families who are affected by Alzheimer’s or a related disorder. Information about the chapter and the disease is available at www.alz.org/delval, or the 24/7 toll-free Helpline, 800-272-3900. The chapter’s social media handle is alzdelval and is present on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

derful bi-lingual speaker, and also a memorable Asian-fusion meal. TV’s newest rising star, Miguel Martinez-Valle, joined NBC10 in December 2017 as a reporter and multimedia journalist. Watching his live reports throughout the day, you can feel his concern for the communities he serves and the human stories he shares. Born in Guaymas, Mexico, Miguel is passionate about LGBTQ issues, immigration, and expanding positive minority representation on television. Prior to joining NBC10, Miguel spent two years as a reporter at KVVU-TV, Las Vegas, where he was honored with an Emmy award for his coverage of the 2016 Presidential Debate. “The most memorable story I covered in Las Vegas was the tragic October 2017 casino shooting,” stated Miguel. “The shooting itself was heartbreaking. However, reporting on the community pulling together to give blood, donate money, and comfort each other was truly inspiring.” Miguel has also worked as a reporter at Univision Las Vegas/KINC-TV; as a reporter/anchor at HOM-TV in Okemos, Michigan; and as a reporter and radio producer for WDBM-FM in East Lansing, Michigan. Michelle Leonard is very impressed with Miguel’s soft-spoken sincerity which comes through every on-air report he authors. She said that Miguel is very popular in both the Spanish and English-speaking communities and his ever-increasing followers are expected to come and offer their support. Every Tasty Talk is a benefit for a deserving organization selected by each speaker. This month’s Tasty Talk will provide vital funds for Mighty Writers El Futuro, which teaches kids from toddlers to teens to think clearly and write with clarity and passion. Each year, over 400 volunteer writers, playwrights, filmmakers, and artists lead-free daily writing academies and dozens of workshops at neighborhood locations in Philadelphia and Camden. Wynnewood Course to Help People Cope with Life Challenges Rabbi Brennan of Chabad of Penn Wynne in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania will offer “Worrier to Warrior,” a new six-session course by the acclaimed Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI), to help people deal with life challenges by accepting themselves and finding meaning in adversity. Beginning Wednesday, November 13 at 7 p.m. participants in the course will take on life’s challenges by examining factors that prevent us from achieving a more positive outlook – guilt, shame, and fear of inauthenticity – in light of the notion that a purposeful life provides the key to well-being. “Worrier to Warrior” is accredited in PA for mental health professionals seeking to fulfill their continuing education requirements (CEU). Like all JLI programs, this course is designed to appeal to people at all levels of knowledge, including those without any prior experience or background in Jewish learning. All JLI courses are open to the public, and attendees need not be affiliated with a particular synagogue, temple, or other house of worship. Interested students may call 610-529-9011 or visit www.chabadpennwynne.org/JLI for registration and for other course-related information. JLI courses are presented in Wynnewood in conjunction with Chabad of Penn Wynne.
