First Annual Manayunk Winter Solstice Celebrate with a Bonfire, Birds of Prey Show, Drum Circle, and More! o celebrate the arrival of the Winter Solstice on Saturday, December 21, Manayunk will be hosting the first annual Manayunk Solstice Fire. The Winter Solstice has been celebrated by cultures across the world for more than 6,000 years and Manayunk plans to celebrate for the first time this year in Canal View Park. The celebration of the Winter Solstice in Manayunk will kick off at 3 p.m. with a Birds of Prey Show, where visitors will have the chance to get up close and personal with a variety of local birds. After, a ceremonious drum circle will take place while the torches and fires are lit. Guests will be able to make wishes or affirmations on wishing sticks, which will then be burned in the bonfire. This signifies their intent and hopefulness for the upcoming new year. Join to watch as the blazing fire comes to life! “This will be night of inspiration as we look forward to longer and lighter days,” says Jane Lipton, Executive Director at www.Manayunk.com. “We encourage families to come connect to the natural world by learning about our local birds of prey and celebrating the return of light to our daily lives.” The Winter Solstice signifies the return of light and with it life. Although winter has been regarded as the season of dormancy, darkness and cold, the coming of lighter days after the winter solstice brought on a much merrier mood. To many, this return of the light was a reason to celebrate that nature’s cycle was continuing. For information, call 215-482-9565 or visit www.Manayunk.com.

Rama Rao (center) of WIPO and his assistant (far left), Pamela Kraft of the Tribal Link Foundation (fourth from left), David Hircock (fifth from right), and DVFS teachers Elizabeth Kriynovich (second from left) and Ken Sinapius (far right). group of students and faculty from Delaware Valley Friends School in Paoli, PA recently traveled to New York City to meet with officials at the United States Mission to the United Nations. The ten students, led by teachers Ken Sinapius and Elizabeth Kriynovich, are planning an educational service-oriented trip to India during their spring break in April 2014. The UN meeting was a first step in presenting the school’s goals for the project, as well as an opportunity to learn about work being done in the region by other groups, nonprofits, and NGOs. They met with dignitaries and UN officials including former Governor of Ohio Ted Strickland, who is awaiting Congressional Confirmation as Delegate to the UN, Dr. S. Rama Rao of the UN World Intellectual Property Association (WIPO), Peggy Kerry, NGO Liaison to the US Mission to the United Nations, and Pamela Kraft, executive director of the Tribal Link Foundation. The students are participating in the school’s ABLE (Adventure Based Learning Experience) program, which tailors educational and service experiences for students to build self-esteem, learn teamwork, and develop leadership skills. For the ABLE India trip, students are working in conjunction with the non-profit “Access to Education,” founded by Delaware Valley Friends senior Thomas Hircock. “Access to Education” raises funds to purchase bicycles for children – mostly girls – in rural Rajasthan and Bihar who are classified as ‘Untouchables’ in their culture. They may be orphans and/or refugees from slavery or work camps. These bicycles make it possible for the children to attend schools, which can sometimes be located more than 20 miles from their homes. The girls also use the bikes to travel to surrounding villages to help other children understand that they also have rights, including access to education. The bicycles each come with a repair kit, and are built in India and made to withstand the forest terrain. Since beginning the program in 2008, “Access to Education” has raised money for more than 500 bicycles. Between now and when the DVFS students leave for India, they hope to raise $500 to donate directly to a local school, and $1000 to purchase bicycles that they will deliver during their trip. During their visit with United Nations officials, the Delaware Valley Friends students learned about education initiatives, international child labor issues, and indigenous peoples worldwide. The students shared with their UN hosts about the mission of Delaware Valley Friends School and Quakerism, and explained the nature of the ABLE trip to India and the goals they have for the trip. David Hircock, Thomas’s father and himself very involved in NGOs around the world, facilitated the visit. The group and the work the school is doing was warmly supported by the people they met, who expressed that they were impressed to see young people taking action to improve the world community.

seemed ridiculous for two kids to discuss friendship without reference to Facebook. Young people now live in a world where it’s possible to have many virtual ‘friends’ and ‘likes’ and yet still be entirely isolated and alone. The new dialogue with this changed emphasis brought the song You’re My Best Friend into the show.” Tribeca producer Jane Rosenthal says, “With Ben’s updates, it’s almost a new show. However, in some ways, it was already ahead of its time when it opened in 2002. The overarching theme is a demand for individualism and intimacy in a world where everything is downloadable.” Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor are musical supervisors to the show, taking an active role in casting the singer/ actors and musicians for every production worldwide. The show is in its 12th year at The Dominion in London’s West End, one of London Theatreland’s biggest theatres, making it the venue’s longest-running production ever. We Will Rock You is now officially the 9th longest running show in the West End and was crowned the UK’s favorite show at the 2011 Olivier Awards, the UK equivalent of the Tony Awards, in a category voted entirely by members of the public. Outside of the UK, the show has now been seen in local productions in 17 countries, playing to an audience of over 15 million people. We Will Rock You takes place in a future age on a planet once called Earth that is now controlled by a mighty corporation. Globalization is complete. Individuality is taboo. Everyone watches the same movies, wears the same clothes and thinks the same thoughts. Music is generated by the corporation’s computers, rock music is unheard and all musical instruments are banned. The hope of breaking free rests with an unlikely resistance – an alliance of rebel Bohemians, waiting for a hero to lead the battle to bring the power of rock back to the people. “This show is all about legend,” says Ben Elton. “We take the legend of Queen and create our own fantastical story of young kids battling the mighty corporation who wants to suppress their individuality and their love of music. They need a hero who can help them in their struggle, and we

have two – the dreamer Galileo, and the sassy rock chick Scaramouche. Guess who ends up winning?” “Creating the show with Ben was very much a three-way thing,” says Roger Taylor. “It was great because he was a pleasure to work with and because he has such a fertile mind. He never stops churning out ideas.” Brian May adds, “The amazing bonus is that Ben's script subtly works as a metaphor too. People definitely come out of the theatre feeling that in a strange way they now know us, Queen, and our struggle, our journey.” The original production of We Will Rock You is a Phil McIntyre Entertainment, Tribeca Theatrical Productions and Queen Theatrical Productions presentation. Book and direction by Ben Elton. Music and Music Supervision by Queen/Roger Taylor and Brian May. Musical staging and choreography by Arlene Phillips. Production Design by Mark Fisher and Lighting Design by Willie Williams. Sound by Bobby Aitken. Costumes by Tim Goodchild. Tracey Flye is the Associate Director and Associate Choreographer of the North American tour. Queen Theatrical Productions is a production entity created especially by the band’s parent company Queen Productions Ltd to handle the development and production of We Will Rock You. Headquartered in New York, Tribeca Theatrical Productions was founded in 2001 by Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal, the acclaimed producers of the Meet the Parents franchise, Analyze This and Wag the Dog. Through Tribeca Theatrical Productions, De Niro and Rosenthal co-produced, along with Queen Theatrical Productions and Phil McIntyre Entertainment, the theatrical musical We Will Rock You, based on the music of Queen. Since 1995, NETworks has produced and managed over 55 touring productions in the US., U.K. and internationally. Current productions include Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Blue Man Group National Tour, Elf The Musical, Flashdance the Musical, The National Theatre of Great Britain’s production of War Horse, Memphis the Musical, and Cameron Mackintosh’s spectacular new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera. It’s the Holidays: Let Yourself Indulge with Simple Ingredient Swaps By Amanda Agamy, RD, LDN, CSO, CDE he holiday season is upon us, which means for many, it’s time to indulge in some delicious holiday foods. Unfortunately, that extra gingerbread cookie or two can lead to extra holiday bulge – making it no surprise when many studies show the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas are a common time for weight gain. At Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) in Philadelphia, I work with patients everyday to make sure they’re meeting their proper nutritional and caloric goals. This doesn’t change when the holidays arrive; in fact, it is more critical than ever. To help them enjoy the season while staying healthy, we’ve developed several “swap” tips. One of the easiest ways to indulge without adding on the pounds is to interchange simple holiday baking ingredients. While these “swaps” are essential for cancer patients to consider during this food-focused time of year, they’re also important for anyone looking to treat themselves but not derail their healthy diet. Here are some of my favorite swaps: • Avocado: The consistency of avocado makes it the perfect replacement for butter in holiday desserts. Swap out half of the butter in your recipe for equal parts avocado, which is heart healthy and packed with antioxidants. In addition to a baking substitute, avocado can also be a swap for alfredo sauce. Simply blend up avocado, lemon juice, garlic, olive oil, basil and salt and toss with pasta for a healthy alternative.

Meditation RetReat December 26 - 31, 2013

• Applesauce: Using applesauce for oil or butter when baking is a great way to cut calories and fat from some of your favorite holiday recipes. If a recipe calls for a half a cup of butter, use half a cup of applesauce instead. • Greek yogurt: The new “it” food is definitely Greek yogurt and, as an ingredient, it can take the place of oil or butter in your next batch of brownies. If you need one cup of butter, instead use half a cup of butter and a quarter cup of yogurt. Or, a third of a cup of oil can be swapped for a quarter cup of yogurt. Greek yogurt can also be an easy substitute for sour cream in any recipe and will add more protein and calcium to the dish. • Black beans: If anyone in the family has a gluten allergy, they won’t have to skip the cake this holiday season thanks to one easy swap – substituting black beans for flour. Simply rinse, drain and puree one cup of beans to replace one cup of flour in chocolate cake and brownies. This will not only cut back on calories but also give the dessert a big protein boost. For information, visit Cancer Treatment Centers of America at www.cancercenter.com. Prior to the parade, visitors to the Seaport Museum can enjoy holiday-themed entertainment beginning at 3:00 p.m. Visitors can hear carolers performing songs of the season, enjoy complimentary refreshments (while supplies last) and see a special display, Silver & Sugar Ships, which features dozens of tiny silver ships from the Museum’s collection and clear toy candy ships, provided by Shane’s Confectionery. Shane Confectionery will also be doing a demonstration of old-fashioned candy making, pouring clear toy candy from 3 - 5 p.m. Visitors can also enter to win a Shane’s gift certificate. At 4 p.m., Santa will be making an appearance, handing out candy canes inside the Museum before heading outside to lead the parade. All activities are included with regular Museum admission ($10 for children 2-11; $13.50 for adults 12+, free for children under 2). The parade kicks off at 5 p.m., led by the Jupiter, a vintage 1902 tug maintained by the Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild. Museum visitors will get the best view of the parade from the 2nd floor balcony overlooking the Delaware River. The Seaport Parade of Lights will be a competition for best decorated boat and festive holiday rattles will be given to guests for them to vote on the best decorated vessels. The Museum will stay open late until after the parade is finished. through time and across continents. Crafts, a scavenger hunt, and flashlight expeditions through the galleries connect children ages 6 to 12 and their parents or chaperones in new ways with ancient mummies, hieroglyphs, plus Greek, Roman, African, and Maya artifacts awaiting discovery. Then campers settle into their sleeping bags among rock and royal artifacts of ancient Egyptian culture, sleeping at the foot of the third-largest granite Sphinx in the world, near the 3,200-year-old pillars and gateways from the great palace of the Pharaoh Merenptah. 40 Winks with the Sphinx concludes with a light breakfast in the Museum Café, and time to browse the Pyramid Shop—the children’s gift shop offering toys, games, stuffed animals, jewelry and books about ancient civilizations and modern world cultures. Guests also receive a souvenir patch in the morning that grants them Museum admission for rest of the day, as well as the remainder of the school year. 40 Winks with the Sphinx is $50 per person (adults and children); $40 for Museum members. Online registration for the 40 Winks with the Sphinx program offers convenience to local or long-distance relatives searching for a one-of-a-kind gift. While on the Penn Museum website, enter the child’s name in the “Write Like an Egyptian” widget to translate it into hieroglyphs, as an Egyptian scribe might have written. Print the result and use it as a gift label to add to the mystique! 40 Winks with the Sphinx sleepover programs begin select Friday evenings at 5:30 p.m. and conclude Saturday mornings at 9 a.m. The overnight program is geared to children ages 6 to 12, and one parent or chaperone is required for every five children. For details, 2014 dates, and online registration for 40 Winks with the Sphinx visit www.penn.museum/40winks or call the Museum Events Office at 215-8982680, Mondays through Fridays, 9 to 3 p.m. SAY YOU SAW IT IN CITY SUBURBAN NEWS!

The recognition award was part of the organization’s annual “Day of Gratitude” in honor of Prematurity Awareness Month, which is observed annually in November. Joseph M. Manko, a founding partner at Manko, Gold, Katcher & Fox, LLP (MGKF) and Cochair of the Board of Advisors with Joanne Denworth of the Audubon Outward Bound project, attended the official ceremonial lease signing event at the proposed new Discovery Center at Strawberry Mansion Lake in Fairmount Park, in Philadelphia, on Saturday, November 23, 2013. The Discovery Center, a joint venture between the National Audobon Society and the Philadelphia Outward Bound School, will be situated in East Park, near 33rd and Oxford Streets, in a setting overlooking the former Philadelphia Water Department’s 35-acre reservoir. It is an integral part of the Atlantic migratory flyway for birds and a safe haven for other wildlife. Manko is shown here with Susie Conrad of the Audobon Society and Oden, the 5½ year old Great Horned Owl.
