Philadelphia Celebrates One of Mexico’s Most Popular Holidays Three Kings Day Free Event on Commonwealth Plaza January 6, 2017 he Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, in association with the Mexican Consulate and the Mexican Cultural Center, invites the public to Commonwealth Plaza on January 6, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. for a free celebration of Three Kings Day. This spirited celebration, also known as “El Dia de Reyes,” celebrates the height of the Christmas season in Hispanic cultures and will feature an evening of classic Mexican traditions including a reenactment of the story of the Three Wise Men, piñatas, and traditional “Rosca de Reyes” bread – the largest one ever made in Philadelphia! This event is part of the Kimmel Center’s Philly ¡En Vivo! series. “This free program celebrates a meaningful holiday in the Mexican community and provides an opportunity for all of us to participate in the traditions of other cultures,” said Anne Ewers, President & CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “It’s very important to us to bring people of different backgrounds together on our Kimmel Center Campus to learn about and celebrate the diversity that makes Philadelphia so special.” Three Kings Day marks the culmination of the twelve days of Christmas and commemorates the Three Wise Men who traveled to present gifts to baby Jesus. In Mexico, people often celebrate the holiday with feasts, celebrations, gift exchanges, and the traditional “Rosca de Reyes” bread. Other upcoming free performances on the Kimmel Center Campus include Grow Up Great (January 1, 2017, Commonwealth Plaza), Sittin’ In (January 11, 2017, SEI Innovation Studio) and Organ Demonstration (February 18, 2017, Verizon Hall). Kulka has drawn Smokey for the U.S. Forest Service for the last 12 years, illustrating such items as posters, promotional materials, and children’s activity books. (15th Street and JFK Boulevard) with additional performance zones located at the Creative and Performing Arts School (901 S. Broad Street) and also at Broad Street and Washington Avenue. The Avalon String Band showcases the color and pageantry that fans have come to expect during Philadelphia’s annual New Year’s Day Mummers Parade. Parade Line-Up The 2017 Philadelphia Mummers Parade will include five divisions, each with its own artistry, sound and customs. Starting at 9 a.m., leading the Parade is Golden Sunrise Fancy Club, which is the last remaining Fancy club in the Philadelphia Mummers Association. Next, at approximately 9:30 a.m., will be the men of the Wench brigades, clad in bonnets and bloomers, and waving multi-tiered parasols. Then at about 10:30 a.m. it’s the Comics, who often parody current political issues and pop culture. Following the Comics, stepping off at about 1 p.m., are the highlight of the parade – the legendary String Bands with their glorious costumes and elaborately-themed presentations. They will perform for the judges at City Hall and then march down Broad Street entertaining the crowds with their intricate musical arrangements combining string, reed and percussion instruments. Interspersed among the String Bands in the Parade on Broad Street will be the Fancy Brigades, hot off their mid-day performance at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, dressed head-to-toe in sequined costumes, masks, and makeup. More Cultural Diversity on Display Marching among the Comics this year are some returning groups who made their Mummers debut in the 2016 Parade: • San Mateo Carnavaleros, a joyful, raucous group of vibrant costumed dancers showcasing their Mexican heritage, • The Miss Fancy Brigade, an LGBT group comprised of the leading female impersonators in Philadelphia, • Second 2 None, an African-American precision drill team from West Philadelphia, Plus, there are two new additions to this year’s Mummers Parade: • Southeast By Southeast, a community-based group showcasing the dance and music of Philadelphia’s Southeast Asian population, • Philadelphia Pan Stars Steel Orchestra, a Trinidadian steel drum band based in the City’s Elmwood neighborhood, specializing in the sweet sound of “pan” (as it’s known in Trinidad). Fancy Brigade Finale Sometimes described as a cross between a Broadway show and Mardi Gras, the indoor Mummers Fancy Brigade Finale, with its elaborate costumes and massive props, is a 2.5 hour, stunning, colorful, high-energy showcase of 12 masterfully choreographed, four-and-a-half-minute routines to high-energy music. More than 2,500 Fancy Brigade performers, divided among 12 Fancy Brigade clubs, with each working for one full year to create the themes, costumes, props and drills that comprise the show and dazzle the audiences. Visitors have two chances to see the indoor Fancy Brigade Finale spectacle on New Year’s Day; The Mummers Fancy Brigade Association presents a family show at 11:30 a.m. and an identical, second show at 5 p.m. Both shows take place in Hall B of the Pennsylvania Convention Center, 11th

Arch streets, in Philadelphia. Leading up to the event, MummersFest, a four-day, family festival from Friday, December 28 - December 31, 2016, described below, provides a sneak peek into the making of the Mummers Fancy Brigade Finale. Tickets for the Mummers Fancy Brigade Finale at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, 11th and Arch streets in Philadelphia, went on sale October 1, 2016. Reserved, center section tickets for the 11:30 a.m. family show and the 5 p.m. judged show are $25; reserved seats and the two side sections are $20. Tickets for groups of 15 or more are $18 and $23. Groups greater than 45 receive two complimentary tickets. Children ages three and younger are admitted free. Food and refreshments are available for purchase at both shows. To order tickets, visit www.spectratix.com or call 1-800-2984200. Tickets can also be purchased at the Independent Visitors Center. For information on booking a group tour with the Mummers Fancy Brigades, contact Brittany De Meo via email at brittany.demo@yahoo.com. MummersFest Another family friendly activity for fans is MummersFest at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, a four-day interactive, family-friendly festival running from Friday, December 28 through Monday, December 31, 2016. For just four dollars, attendees can make-n-take crafts, try on authentic Mummers costumes for picture taking, and watch the clubs rehearse their drills. Knowledgeable, parade savvy veteran Mummers, all former club captains, lead 30-minute backstage tours of the show props and floats. MummersFest hours are: Wednesday, December 28, 4:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.; Thursday, December 29, 4:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.; Friday, December 30, 4:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.; Saturday, December 31, Noon - 6 p.m. Tickets are available at the door of the Pennsylvania Convention Center, at the Independent Visitors Center and via Spectratix, for four dollars per person. For well over 300 years, since the late 1600’s, Mummers have marched in Philadelphia on New Year’s Day while displaying over-the-top creative costumes, music and pageantry. The official, City-sponsored Philadelphia Mummers Parade began on January 1, 1901 as a way to formalize the celebration of the New Year and it is believed to be the longest running traditional folk parade in the country. The Mummers are committed to providing a fun, family-friendly form of entertainment that respects all people, regardless of race, religion, nationality or sexual orientation. In recent years, the Mummers have redoubled their efforts to engage in a productive dialogue with groups underrepresented in the Parade, and welcome all members of the community to participate. Raising Awareness of Problem of Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults hiladelphia Corporation for Aging (PCA) is joining in a national campaign led by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a), in collaboration with the AARP Foundation, to raise awareness of the growing problem of social isolation and loneliness in older Americans. The “Home for the Holidays Campaign” is aimed at encouraging discussion of important issues affecting older Americans at a time of the year when family and friends often gather together. It is estimated that one in five adults over age 50 are affected by isolation, a problem that has been associated with higher rates of chronic disease, depression, dementia and death. “We hope to raise awareness of the problem of isolation and loneliness in a number of ways, including one-on-one counseling with our clients and leveraging traditional and social media to spread the word,” said Holly Lange, PCA president and CEO. “Because our agency is on the frontlines of helping older Americans live with dignity and independence in their homes, connecting them to an array of in-home services so vital to their well-being. We are often the first to realize that an older adult is isolated and lonely,” said Lange. “That’s why we believe our participation in this national campaign can have such a major impact locally. “Working with the strong, local coalition of government, nonprofit and private sector organizations interested in issues affecting older adults, we also hope to build consensus for the development of solutions that will alleviate this problem for those suffering today and for those who may be at risk in the future.” The campaign features a consumer brochure, “Expand Your Circles: Prevent Isolation and Loneliness As You Age,” which offers information and resources to help older adults reduce their risk of becoming isolated or lonely. As part of the national network of 622 Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) and the more than 250 Title VI Native American aging programs, providing crucial home and community-based services and supports for older adults in virtually every community in the nation, PCA is uniquely positioned to shine a light on this growing problem and to help find solutions. Philadelphia Corporation for Aging (PCA) is the first place where older Philadelphians, and adults with disabilities, can turn for information and services to help maintain or improve the quality of their lives. For information on PCA’s services and programs, call the PCA Helpline at 215-765-9040 or visit www.pcaCares.org.

Vanessa Sterling (as The Swallow), Mattie Hawkinson (as The Happy Prince) in Oscar Wilde’s “Wilde Tales.” Photo/Shawn May uintessence Theatre Group continues its tradition of holiday classics for the whole family with Oscar Wilde’s “Wilde Tales.” Celebrated up-and-coming experimental director Jeremy Bloom adapts and directs this amalgamation of short stories. “Wilde Tales” began performances on Wednesday, December 7 with performances through December 31. All performances are at the Sedgwick Theater, 7137 Germantown Ave. in Mt Airy, Philadelphia, PA 19119. To purchase tickets visit www.QuintessenceTheatre.org or call 215-987-4450. Including the The Selfish Giant, The Happy Prince, The Devoted Friend, The Nightingale and the Rose, and The Remarkable Rocket, “Wilde Tales” is centered on the story of a selfish giant who builds a wall around his beautiful garden to prevent the local children from playing in it. When the wall is finished, the garden falls into perpetual winter and doesn’t awake until a young boy finds his way in through a hole in the wall. Through Oscar Wilde’s soaring prose, original songs by David Cope and puppetry by Marina Plag, “Wilde Tales” celebrates the values of selflessness, charity, compassion, and love in soul-stirring, wondrous and timely tales for the entire family. Quintessence Theatre Group is a professional classic theatre, dedicated to the performance and adaptation of epic works of classic literature and drama for the contemporary stage, which ignites the mind, body and soul through the power of the actor, design and spoken word. Quintessence continues to work towards the establishment of an acting ensemble and a rotation repertory at the historic Sedgwick Theater in Mt. Airy, Philadelphia. As Quintessence Theatre’s home, the Sedgwick Theater, a 1928 art deco movie palace designed by William Lee, will regain its place as a jewel in Philadelphia’s cultural landscape. Quintessence Theatre Group was named Best of Philly 2015 for up-and-coming theater company and has had 9 Barrymore recommended productions in the past three years. This fall E. Ashley Izard won the Barrymore Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Winnie in Quintessence’s production of Samuel Beckett’s “Happy Days.” “Wilde Tales” runs December 7-31. Post-show talkbacks with the cast and director will take place on Thursday, December 15 and Sunday, December 18. All evening performances begin at 7 p.m. Upcoming 2 p.m. matinees are December 18, 23, and 30; and 12 p.m. matinees on December 24 and 31. Check the performance schedule at www.QuintessenceTheatre.org for exact performance times and schedules. Tickets are $27-$34 general admission, $25 for seniors (65 and over), $15 for students/ youth (21 and under). Special family packages are now available. Savings of up to 40% on tickets when you bring the whole family. To purchase tickets, visit: www.QuintessenceTheatre.org or call 215-987-4450.
