Wardrobes for Work is seeking new partnerships with community groups and non-profits to assist with distribution of business and business casual attire hanks to the generosity of hundreds of area residents who have donated gently-used articles of men’s and women’s business casual attire and business suits, the Neumann University Center for Leadership’s Wardrobes for Work program has distributed – free-ofcharge – an estimated 85,000 articles of clothing to career seekers since 2017. As a result of the overwhelming community support and donations, the Wardrobes for Work program is seeking to expand its ability to distribute the clothing by forming new partnerships with nonprofits and community organizations that serve individuals who may be in need of clothing.

“With the colder winter months approaching, Wardrobes for Work has set an aggressive goal for ourselves of recirculating 25,000 articles of clothing to individuals in need by the end of the year,” said Danielle McNichol, General Counsel of Neumann University and Director of the Neumann Center for Leadership. “To meet that benchmark of distributing all that clothing before the holidays, we are looking to form new partnerships with non-profit and community organizations that service and assist individuals who are in need of gently-used work and dress attire. By partnering with more organizations, we hope to increase our reach and have a positive impact in the lives of more people who may not be aware of our program.”

Groups and organizations that serve individuals who are in need of the attire – for their own personal use – are encouraged to visit the Wardrobes for Work website and complete the “Group Needs” Request Form, which will assist volunteers with compiling the appropriate type of clothing and sizes to best meet the identified needs. The form can be found at: https://neumannpublicsafety.com/donation-programs/. In addition, individuals in need of workplace attire can schedule an appointment by emailing mcnichod@neumann.edu or by calling 610-358-4528.

McNichol estimates that Wardrobes for Work has collected more than 125,000 articles of clothing since its launch two-and-a-half years ago. Items are collected on Neumann University’s campus in Aston, PA and through attire donation boxes that are hosted by dozens of local businesses, law firms, the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce, and county and state government offices.

“Wardrobes for Work removes a financial barrier that individuals face – purchasing suitable clothing – when attending job interviews, reentering the workforce, starting a new job, or supplementing their existing work and dress attire,” said McNichol. “It is incredibly heartwarming to see the gratitude of individuals who have benefitted from the generosity of local residents. We believe there are even more people out there who we can assist through this program, which is why we want to partner with more groups to ensure we are reaching as many individuals as possible.”

Wardrobes for Work is entirely volunteer driven and welcomes individuals who want to lend assistance. Area residents who would like to donate their time to assist with the task of sorting donated items and preparing “orders” of clothing that meet the specific needs identified by community partner organizations are encouraged to contact Danielle McNichol at mcnichod@neumann.edu or by calling 610-358-4528.

Eastern State Penitentiary Commemorates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with Readings of “Letter from Birmingham Jail” astern State Penitentiary Historic Site commemorates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with three days of free community programs, Saturday, January 18 through Monday, January 20, 2020. The historic prison offers special readings of Dr. King’s 1963 landmark text “Letter from Birmingham Jail” and invites visitors to respond to its relevance in light of recent civil and human rights movements. Additional programming is available Monday, January 20, including family art making, children’s stories, musical performances, and community electronics recycling.

“Dr. King’s extraordinary letter has never been more relevant,” says Sean Kelley, senior vice president, director of interpretation for Eastern State Penitentiary. “Dr. King taught us that civil disobedience was essential to the civil rights movement. When this highly educated and prominent man chose to be arrested and incarcerated, it forced many Americans to confront not just the racism of individual behavior, but the immorality and oppression in the nation’s legal system as well.”

Readings and Discussions on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday Professional actors, youth, and community leaders read excerpts from Dr. King’s letter three times a day on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m.

Readings are accompanied by an informal discussion moderated by a civil rights scholar, giving visitors an opportunity to respond to the letter’s relevance today. The readings are free and open to the public. No reservations required.

Additional activities on Monday, January 20 Family Activities: In partnership with the African American Museum in Philadelphia and Art Sanctuary, the historic site invites children, ages 7-12, and their families to create art in response to themes found in the letter and read stories about Dr. King’s life and legacy.

Family activities are available on Monday, January 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., free and open to the public. No reservations required.

Musical Performances: Local musician Justin Griggs performs two brief sets of civil rights era music at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Monday, January 20. Justin began playing the piano at the age of two. He currently plays 19 different instruments and is a student at Philadelphia’s Creative and Performing Arts High School.

Community Electronics Recycling: In partnership with PAR-Recycle Works, the historic site encourages the public to recycle old electronics from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, January 20. The following items are accepted: laptops, desktops, tablets, printers, scanners, cell phones, flat-screen computer monitors, fax machines, cell phones, keyboards, iPods, MP3 players, Fitbits, VCRs, DVD players, cords, game systems, and remotes. All computer drives are wiped clean. Dropoff is free except for CRT monitors and TVs, flat screen TVs, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, air purifiers, and microwaves. Prices for recycling these items vary. The electronics recycling station is located near the penitentiary’s entrance on Fairmount Avenue so that all community members, including those not interested in visiting the penitentiary, can easily recycle their items.

About “Letter from Birmingham Jail” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was arrested in Birmingham, Alabama on April 12, 1963 for demonstrating without a permit. During his 11 days in jail there, he wrote “Letter from Birming-

ham Jail” in response to a letter published by Alabama clergymen that criticized King’s use of jail time to demonstrate civil injustice.

In the letter, Dr. King explains why he chose to use prisons as a tool in his civil rights movement. He writes, “I submit that an individual who breaks the law that conscience tells him is unjust, and willingly accepts the penalty by staying in jail in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the very highest respect for the law.”

The writing of the letter itself involved rule breaking. Prisoners were not allowed instruments to write during this time, so Dr. King’s lawyer snuck in a pencil. The letter was written in the margins of a newspaper and smuggled back out by the same lawyer. The letter became a manifesto for civil disobedience, stating, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” The letter led to a pivotal moment in the American civil rights movement when, about a month after it was published, Birmingham officials agreed to desegregate schools, restaurants, and stores.

About Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site interprets the legacy of American criminal justice reform, from the nation’s founding through to the present day, within the long-abandoned cellblocks of the nation’s most historic prison.

Eastern State Penitentiary was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of prisoners. Its vaulted, sky-lit cells held approximately 80,000 men and women during its 142 years of operation, including bank robber “Slick Willie” Sutton and “Scarface” Al Capone.

Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site is open for tours seven days a week, year-round.

Admission includes “The Voices of Eastern State” Audio Tour, narrated by actor Steve Buscemi; Hands-On History interactive experiences; history exhibits; and a critically acclaimed series of artist installations.

In recent years, Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site has been awarded the prestigious Excellence in Exhibitions award by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), the nation’s highest award in exhibition development and design, for its exhibit Prisons Today: Questions in the Age of Mass Incarceration, as well as the Institutional Award for Special Achievement from the Pennsylvania Federation of Museums and the Trustee Emeritus Award for Stewardship from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Returning Citizens Tour Guide Project, which hires people who were formerly incarcerated to lead tours of the historic site, has won the EdCom Award for Innovation in Museum Education by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) and has been featured internationally by such networks as the BBC and others.

Make-A-Wish Partners with The Philadelphia Orchestra to Grant Teen’s Wish

ixteen-year-old Kyle from Jamison, PA has many accomplishments for his young age: he has a black belt in karate, tuesday, december 24 a 4.0 GPA, regarded cellist in his school orchestra and, most 5 p.m. – Candlelight Communion Service notably, he is a cancer survivor. Alyssa earned this opportunity after winning the Junior Division of the Pennsylvania State MTNA competition. Alyssa studies piano with Dr. Igor Resnianski at the Nelly Berman School of Music. She is a prizewinner of many junior piano competitions. Last summer she won top prizes at the Kaufman Music Center 2019 International Youth Piano Competition and Chicago International Music Competition and Festival.

The winner of the division competition will compete in the National Finals during the MTNA National Conference in Chicago in March. National Finalists will be announced in midJanuary.

The three-tiered MTNA competitions begin at the state level. Winners of each State Competition advance to the video-only division competition. Division winners then proceed to the National Competition Finals.

Inglis Welcomes Ben Laudermilch as New Vice President and Executive Director, Inglis Housing Corporation en Laudermilch has joined Inglis as its new Vice President/Executive Director of Inglis Housing Corporation (IHC). In his new role, Ben will oversee all of Inglis’ efforts in developing and managing independent living communities for people with disabilities. Now the largest private developer of this type of housing in the region, Inglis has been creating housing communities since 1974 and today, owns and/or manages nearly 400 units throughout Philadelphia and South Jersey. Ben served as the Executive Housing Director for the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services overseeing housing initiatives across the Commonwealth. Most recently, Ben was the Housing Director for the Department of Corrections, focusing on developing housing opportunities for reentering Pennsylvanians. He also worked for nearly a decade for the Cumberland County Housing and Redevelopment Authorities in various roles, including Executive Director of both authorities.

“Housing has been the common thread in my work,” said Ben. “I found a real connection, in various communities and across the commonwealth, helping to build strategies to increase housing opportunities for underserved populations including people with disabilities. That is what drew me to Inglis – they have a great track record. Their newest project, Inglis Methodist Gardens, includes a $4 million leadership gift by Aetna Better Health of Pennsylvania – that’s an indicator they are doing things differently. I look forward to that kind of thinking,” he said.

Inglis has brought its Adapted Technology expertise to the Housing Corporation. Inglis has become a thought leader integrating Smart Home technologies in its housing communities, allowing for greater opportunities for independence.

Since 1974 Inglis has been developing housing communities for people with disabilities.

Now with 11 housing communities and the 12th approved for tax credits projects, Inglis will have 430 apartment units throughout the area and plans for more. Inglis goes beyond compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) when building accessible apartments by creating what it refers to as “accessibility+” such as wider doorways than ADA requires, sink faucets on the side rather than back for easier reach, etc.

“Inglis has been committed to developing accessible, affordable housing for people with disabilities for more than four decades,” said Jim Logue, Chair of Inglis’ Board of Directors.

“Having Ben join the team will help Inglis build on our strong foundation in affordable housing and strengthen our commitment to this important work,” Jim said.

Further connecting the dots, later this month, Inglis will open The Innovation Center on the ground floor of one of its Housing Communities – Inglis Gardens at Belmont (Bldg. B) which will provide a centralized home for all of Inglis’ community-based services – allowing people with disabilities throughout Philadelphia to take advantage of additional supports to help them better manage independent living, should they need them.

Cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and silent auction preceded a sit down dinner and the alwaysexciting loud auction. Guests bid on countless gift certificates and dining experiences, vacations, golf packages, professional sports tickets, and many one-of-a-kind gifts, such as an engraved rocking chair.

All proceeds from the event directly benefit students at the Academy.
