Ms. Ruhl’s play, “The Clean House,” was a 2005 Pulitzer Prize finalist. Her play, “The Room Next Door, or, the vibrator play,” was a 2010 Pulitzer Prize finalist and was nominated for a Tony Award. “Melancholy Play” centers on Tilly’s – you guessed it – melancholy. Although it is objectionable to her employer, it is oddly attractive to those around her. She finds herself surrounded by quirky friends and lovers who have fallen under its spell. But what happens when she suddenly wakes up wildly happy? Sarah Ruhl’s poetic writing is the counterpoint in this offbeat, poignant comedy about both the beauty and the sadness of life. The live playing of the cello accompanies this play with a powerful soulfulness that will leave you mesmerized as you leave the theater. The stellar cast includes: Samantha Simpson as Tilly, Matthew Thompson as Frank, Laura Watson as Frances, Maura McInerny as Joan, Josh Keiter as Lorenzo, and Richard Maurer as Julian, the cellist. Old Academy Players, a member of the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance, is a non-profit community theater located at 3544 Indian Queen Lane in East Falls (Philadelphia), the urban village on the Schuylkill River. OF THE

RED HOT LOVERS”

Street Theatre production. Directed by Adam Immerwahr, “Last of the Red Hot Lovers” begins previews in Philadelphia on January 10, opens January 12 and continues through February 5. This production is part of a double feature of Simon’s work at the Walnut, as “Laughter on the 23rd Floor” will begin performances the on the Mainstage on January 17. Let’s return to the 1960s, an era where we were free to choose who we wanted to love and when. But in this world filled with “Mad Men” and “Mod Women,” was it easier to choose a mate? In this all-new production of Neil Simon’s “Last of the Red Hot Lovers,” true comedy ensues when a man looks for something new and different, but ends up finding himself in the same situation, again and again! It’s the revolution of a laugh-time and we’ve got the woman to prove it! “Last of the Red Hot Lovers” premiered on Broadway in 1969 at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre. The production ran through 1971 and earned three Tony Awards nominations. Following

Seating is limited and advance reservations are suggested. George Crumb’s visionary “Black Angels: Thirteen Images of the Dark Land for Electric String Quartet” with guest shadow-choreography by designer/director Sebastienne Mundheim, (Founder/Director White Box Theatre) anchors the program. The evening opens with a new work, “lens flare from Alpha Centauri” by Joshua Hey, and concludes with Scott Ordway’s whisper play, “Tonight We Tell the Secrets of the World,” a 2016 commission inspired by the archaeological work of the Penn Museum and the acoustics of the magnificent 90-foot dome of the Chinese Rotunda. “Tonight We Tell the Secrets of the World” will feature a special guest, acclaimed soprano Ah Young Hong. “Crumb, who is emeritus at Penn, completed his masterpiece on Friday the thirteenth of March, 1970, ‘in tempore belli,’ as he writes on the score. We’re revisiting it on Friday the thirteenth in another time of uncertainty,” said Min-Young Kim, violinist of Daedalus. “The Penn Museum’s vast rotunda space, the ancient artifacts and the shadow projections, the resonance of strings and of whispering, chanting, and the eerie glass harmonicas—all come together to create an unforgettable evening of music and magic.” “Black Angels and Secrets” will run approximately 90 minutes with one intermission. This year’s nativity tableau at Carol Night featured “Blessed Mother Emily Crawford of Broomall and “Baby Jesus Martin Donnelly of Havertown (center). Martin is the son of Angela Donnelly of Havertown, MMA alumna and Spanish teacher. “Angels – from left – Nadia Carlino of Haverford, MaryCate Markey of Ardmore, Josie Messina of Philadelphia, and Alison Zarella of Ardmore. mong several Christmas outreach opportunities, on December 24, Merion Mercy’s Community Service Corps (CSC) will serve a Christmas Eve brunch to those experiencing trauma in the greater Philadelphia area at Broad Street Ministry. Ensuring that MMA’s Christmas giving touched lives outside of the surrounding area, Fair Trade items were sold for several days and made popular gifts. The annual Fair Trade Sale was a tremendous success, selling items from across the globe that represent the talent of artisans who are able to carry on a long tradition of craft making in various forms. The sale of Fair Trade items directly impacts the artisans and creators of the products by being guaranteed a living wage for their handiwork. The surrounding sense of giving at MMA even embraced Advent Angels, a beloved MMA tradition in which students, faculty, and staff secretly gift treats in the days leading up to Christmas break. Expanded options for Alternative Advent Giving encouraged many in the community to make a donation in their Advent Angel’s name in lieu of a larger final gift. And, of course, no Merion Mercy holiday would be complete without music and dance. The school community rang in the holidays with two beautiful, song-filled evenings. One evening, Merion Mercy’s eleventh and twelfth grade students, led by the school’s glee club and chorale, enjoyed Carol Night. A proud MMA tradition, students sang holiday favorites and read scriptures about the nativity story. The second concert, again led by MMA’s glee club and chorale, welcomed alumnae to share in an evening of Christmas song and merriment. The former students joined current students on stage to sing in the finale.

“The Time We Give Each Other Debuts January 14 and 15 olf Performing Arts Center presents the second iteration of The Butterfly Project. The second flight of this project is a new, student created work, “The Time We Give Each Other. Their creation debuts Saturday, January 14, and Sunday, January 15, at Wolf Performing Arts Center. There are two shows each day at 1 p.m. an 4 p.m. All performances are at Wolf Performing Arts Center, 1240 Montrose Avenue, Bryn Mawr PA 19010. “The Time We Give Each Other was written by student playwrights, from Wolf PAC and Philadelphia Young Playwrights, who were guided through the educational and professional process of collaborating and creating a new play. This new work will tour January – May 2017. The alternating casts are filled with Wolf PAC students. Beginning with an announcement, “Good morning, Mabel County High School. We will be having a slight change of schedule today. All students will remain in their fourth period classrooms on lockdown until told otherwise... “The Time We Give Each Other introduces nine students who find themselves isolated from the faculty. Using only their phones and each other, they attempt to unravel the cause of the lock down. When credibility is measured in “Likes and rumors spread with the swipe of a finger, where can the truth be found? This play opens up a dialogue about how we process trauma in our modern world. The Butterfly Project is Wolf Performing Arts Center’s access initiative which seeks to bring theatrical performances to venues across the Greater Philadelphia Area free of charge to its audiences and hosts. Plays selected will address an issue of social justice and will be performed by young actors in grades 6-12. “Our goal with The Butterfly Project is to empower the next generation of creators and artists who will speak out against social injustice everywhere, says Tim Popp, Wolf PAC’s Artistic Director. “Our young actors are developing the skills needed to contribute to the wellbeing of their communities through the arts. We hope to provide each school and community center we visit the tools to create their own projects that will speak to issues that affect them. To learn more about Wolf PAC, visit www.wolfperformingartscenter.org or call 610-642-0233.
