music of more recent times, presenting works by famed and popular American composers. And such will be the type of captivating concert Vox Ama Deus will perform on Friday, January 13, 2017, at 8 p.m., in the Perelman Theater of the Kimmel Center at Broad and Spruce Streets in center city Philadelphia. In the words of Maestro Radu: “We’ve titled our January 13 concert simply the Best of Gershwin. This will be a stupendous, classically-oriented pops concert which should be especially appealing to music lovers who crave bravura works written for the piano. And then there will be the great singing demanded by Gershwin’s melodic score to Porgy and Bess. On Friday evening, January 13, 2017, at 8 p.m., the internationally acclaimed British piano virtuoso Peter Donohoe will return for his seventh concert appearance with the Ama Deus Ensemble Symphony Orchestra in the Kimmel Center’s Perelman Theater; and, we are thrilled!” Peter Donohoe made his Delaware Valley debut at the Kimmel Center on January 4, 2013, performing in Vox Ama Deus’s first-ever pops concert, entitled a Gershwin Gala, with Valentin Radu conducting. Mr. Donohoe has returned every year since then to perform in lively pops-oriented concerts … which always provided interesting programmatic twists! For example, at Mr. Donohoe’s suggestion – and for the enjoyment of Vox’s audiences – Valentin Radu also programmed little known, but major solo piano compositions by Duke Ellington, Maurice Ravel (Piano Concerto in G), Leonard Bernstein (Prelude, Fugue & Riffs) and Aaron Copland (the First Piano Concerto of 1927 in its probable Delaware Valley premiere). Concerning the upcoming Friday, January 13, 2017 concert, Valentin Radu commented: “Maestro Donohoe will again have his work cut out for him! From the genius of George Gershwin we will present three major, popular, tour-de-force masterpieces―the always popular Rhapsody in Blue, the pianistic show-piece titled the Concerto in F, and of course, the famous An American in Paris to round out the evening.” Tickets to the Friday, January 13, 2017 concert are priced at $20 - $50 - and - $70 depending on location in the Perelman Theatre (plus Kimmel Center box office fees). Tickets may be purchased online at www.KimmelCenter.org, or by walk-up to the Kimmel Center box office between 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, or by telephone at 215-893-1999. session” (1994). Winner of an OBIE Award and John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, Doug Varone (Artistic Director) is recognized globally for his work in dance, theater, opera and film. Performances take place Wednesday, January 18 at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, January 19 at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, January 20 at 8 p.m.; Saturday, January 21 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, January 22 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $20 - $60 and can be purchased in person at the Prince Theater box office, by phone 215-422-4580 or online at www.princetheater.org/nextmove. “Recomposed” is a colorful full-company work inspired by the artwork of abstract expressionist American artist Joan Mitchell. Set to Michael Gordon’s stirring score “Dystopia,” Varone’s choreography swoops and hurls through space at great speeds accented by intense moments of stillness and silhouettes. Varone notes, “As a dance-maker, I have always considered myself a visual artist, using the landscape of a dancer’s body to paint and sculpt each new work.” Set to Philip Glass’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, “Pos-
session,” Varone’s masterpiece, was reconstructed to celebrate the Company’s 30th Anniversary. Based on A.S. Byatt’s novel about two poets who fell in love while doing research, Varone blends humanity with incredible physicality. This three section 28-minute non-linear narrative work told through movement examines key imagery from the novel. “Folded” (2016) is a duet from a larger work States of “Belief” (working title) set to the dissonant music of Philadelphiaborn composer and MacArthur Fellow, Julia Wolfe. This abstract dance explores relationships and the intimate interactions between two dancers falling in and out of sync as they lift, bump, crash, and touch and intertwine. In addition to the six performances, the company will conduct outreach activities. These include a program for the Student Discovery Series, Friday, January 20 at 10:30 a.m., a master class, Friday, January 20 at 1 p.m., and post-performance chats after the Thursday 7:30 p.m. and Saturday 2 p.m. performances. A short chat with Varone precedes each performance. Visit www.danceaffiliates.org.

rden Theatre Company continues its 29th season with the Philadelphia premiere of Annie Baker’s “John” from January 12 through February 26, 2017. Arden Associate Artistic Director, Matthew Decker, directs. “John” runs on the Arden’s Arcadia Stage at 40 N. 2nd Street in Philadelphia. “John” is a beautiful and moving new play by Pulitzer Prizewinning playwright Annie Baker about spirituality and relationships. It opened Off-Broadway in the Summer of 2015 and was nominated for the 2016 Lucille Lortel Award and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding New Play. Time Magazine ranked it on its list of Top Ten Plays and Musicals for 2015. In “John,” a young couple from Brooklyn, Elias SchrieberHoffman and Jenny Chung, come to stay at a bed and breakfast in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, looking to visit the historical sites of the famous battlefields. Mertis, the B&B’s proprietor, welcomes them to her overwhelmingly cozy home filled with tchotchkes, dolls, stuffed animals and a player piano. Mertis cares for her guests, her sickly (unseen) husband, and her dear, blind friend Genevieve with consummate grace, and though she has experienced her own share of suffering, her perspective on life is quite congenial. We learn
A
that her B&B is the site of a former Civil War hospital, and seems to be full of strange and possibly supernatural occurrences. Mertis also provides a real contrast to the young couple, who we learn may be taking this trip to repair a rift in their relationship. A special Audio Described Pay What You Can performance takes place on Wednesday, January 11 at 8 p.m. and benefits the Overbrook School for the Blind in Philadelphia, PA. In the play, the character of Genevieve is blind. Director Decker says, “Genevieve, one of Mertis’s dear friends, suddenly went blind at the age of 57. She is a fascinating character who speaks of her struggles with great openness, perspective and steely endurance.” Single ticket prices are $36-$52, with discounts available for groups of 15 or more, seniors, students, military, and educators. Call the Arden Box Office at 215-922-1122, visit www.ardentheatre.org or visit the box office at 40 N. 2nd Street in Old City, Philadel phia.

S EALANT D AY O FFERS F REE D ENTAL S ERVICES FOR C HILDREN Harcum Dental Program Serves Area Youth on MLK Day he Dental Hygiene Program at Harcum College will offer free oral examinations, sealants, fluoride treatments, and health care instructions for children ages 6-12 during its annual Sealant Day, on Monday, January 16, 2017. The event coincides with the Martin Luther King Day of Service and will be held at the Cohen Dental Center on Harcum’s Bryn Mawr campus. The services are provided on a first-come, first-serve basis, regardless of income, with no other qualifying information necessary. Families need only call ahead for an appointment by contacting the Cohen Dental Center at 610-526-6113. Appointments are being accepted for 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 1 p.m. until all slots are full. 2017 marks the 12th year of the free program, in which registered dental hygienists, area dentists, and Harcum dental hygiene students provide free dental hygiene services to children who have pre-registered. Co-sponsored by the Pennsylvania Dental Hygienists’ Association, Sealant Day aims to prevent future tooth decay and cavities in children, as well as aid in overall oral health. The tips and guidance provided help children, families, and the community learn the value of oral care in their overall health and wellness. “Our students and faculty are devoted to promoting good oral health to parents and children in the local area,” said Jean Byrnes-Ziegler, Director of the Dental Hygiene Program. “Sealant Day is an important initiative for us to not only advance the clinical experience for our students but also to provide a much needed community resource.” Sealants are coatings that fill the cracks and crannies of molar teeth and prevent bacteria from causing cavities. The Federal Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 20 percent of U.S. children and teenagers have untreated dental decay by age 19, but only 43 percent of children have sealants. Children without sealants have nearly three times as many cavities, and children in low-income families are less likely to have access to sealants. An estimated 100 million Americans have no dental insurance, which generally covers sealant placements. The CDC says sealants prevent about 81 percent of decay two years after placement and continue to be effective for up to nine years. They are also cost-effective. The CDC estimates that applying sealants to low-income children in school-based programs could save up to $300 million in dental treatment costs, as fillings in cavities cost more to apply. According to the American Society of Periodontology, oral health problems are linked to a variety of diseases and health conditions, including diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. The use of sealants can decrease oral health complications, especially for cavity prone children. Families need only call ahead for an appointment by contacting the Cohen Dental Center at 610-526-6113. Appointments are being accepted for 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 1 p.m. until all slots are full. The College will be open on January 16 with a normal class and office schedule.

Genevieve offers a performance that is jam-packed with songs for the whole family. She invites the young audience members to sing along to catchy, uniquely funky and cool songs that teach life skills such as learning a telephone number and telling time. In a recent “Kids Can Groove” interview Genevieve states, “Children love to be a part of something, and with a live concert, they can! There are so many things going on at a live show that it takes the entertainment experience to a new level. Kids can see live performers, lights, dancing, other children, and more! I believe that seeing a live show opens up a child’s mind by involving them in the act of making music.” The singer/songwriter has been successfully entertaining young people for over ten years and is committed to providing an excellent live, musical experience for young audience members and their families.

Natural Lands Trust has selected Ethan Kauffman as Director of Stoneleigh: A Natural Garden, the 42-acre Villanova property that the non-profit acquired in April 2016 from the estate of the late John and Chara Haas. delphia region for the position, has a distinguished 17-year career in public horticulture. “It’s an honor to be a caretaker of the garden legacy the Haas family has given us all,” said Kauffman. “I’m excited to oversee the transition of the property from a private home to a natural garden open to all.” Kauffman spent the last nine years at Moore Farms Botanical Garden in Lake City, South Carolina, located about 90 miles east of Columbia. During his tenure, he led the transition of Moore Farms from a private pleasure garden to a non-profit botanical garden. Prior to Moore Farms, Kauffman managed the horticulture program at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in Columbia, South Carolina. A native of Lancaster County, Kauffman earned his BS in Biological Sciences from Clemson University. “Having grown up exploring the wild places of southeastern Pennsylvania, I’m thrilled to return home to the region that sparked my passion in the natural world and, ultimately, led me to a career in public horticulture,” said Kauffman. Stoneleigh: A Natural Garden includes stately trees, winding pathways, and lush gardens that the Haas family carefully stewarded over the decades. The gardens were designed by a number of notable landscape architects over the past century—including Olmsted Brothers, sons of the famed Frederick Law Olmsted. “Our goal is to maintain the spirit and framework of the existing landscape design while expanding the use of native plants,” said Natural Lands Trust President Molly Morrison. “We envision Stoneleigh as a showcase for blending the aesthetic beauty of designed gardens with the natural richness of native habitats that are essential to the health of our planet.” After a period of transition, Stoneleigh: A Natural Garden will be open – free-of-charge – to visitors. Natural Lands Trust will offer a variety of public programs with a primary focus on nature-based learning. The organization also anticipates hosting family and kids’ programs as well as volunteer opportunities. It is expected to take approximately 18 months to make the improvements needed to transition the property from a family home to a public garden. Work began shortly after the property changed ownership this past spring. The public can stay up-to-date on progress by visiting www.natlands.org/stoneleigh or www.facebook.com/stoneleighanaturalgarden. Natural Lands Trust is dedicated to protecting the forests, fields, streams, and wetlands that are essential to the sustainability of life in eastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey. Since its founding in 1953, Natural Lands Trust has preserved more than 100,000 acres, including 43 nature preserves totaling nearly 22,000 acres. Today, millions of people enjoy the healthy habitats, clean air and water, bountiful recreational opportunities, and scenic beauty provided by the lands the organization has preserved. For information, visit www.natlands.org.

S E N AT O R L E A C H I N V I T E S P U B L I C T O “ D AY L I N ’ S R E S I S TA N C E F O R U M ” tate Senator Daylin Leach (D-Montgomery/Delaware) invites the public to attend “Daylin’s Resistance Forum,” which is scheduled to be held Wednesday, January 18, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Upper Merion Middle School, 450 Keebler Road, King of Prussia, PA. Leach has fought for progress his entire life. Like many liberals, he is worried that Donald Trump and his allies will destroy decades of progress on issues like healthcare, the environment, criminal justice, and civil rights. In the days since Trump was elected, an overwhelming number of people have asked Leach how to protect progress and move forward. The forum will provide an opportunity for attendees to discuss the best ways to protect progressive policies and institutions. They will learn how to lobby elected officials and advocate for the policies they are passionate about. Attendees will meet with experienced advocates from organizations that promote a variety of issues including civil rights, women’s health, and firearm safety. Most importantly, attendees will meet others who care deeply about protecting progress. The forum is non-partisan and open to the public. Its focus is policy and issue advocacy, not promoting or helping any candidate or political party in any upcoming election. Those interested in attending should RSVP to Mary Pat Tomei at MPTomei@pasenate.com. Those with questions should call 610-768-4200.
