It’s 1966, and Veronica DiGregorio wants Peg Merwood to teach her how to bake bread, using the special flair of “The Prescott Method.” The women meet regularly, break bread and take the time necessary to escape from their daily routines. The kind-hearted, lonely Peg, wife of a college professor, is working hard to fit into her new university setting. The animated and inquisitive Veronica, mother of six, longs for a little quiet time. As they bake bread, they discover that the best ingredients for coping with the lives they have chosen are friendship, conversation and trust. “The Prescott Method” is a World Premiere comedy by Philadelphia playwright Michael Whistler. The idea for the play came when Whistler saw two women on the Today Show holding a sign that read “On vacation from our husbands.” He com-

and dance, reminding us that women bear a complicated love and invites you to transform, cross the rainbow and experience the light that exists on the other side. Zuhairah McGill, Founder and Executive Artistic Director of First World Theatre Ensemble shares, “The struggles in For Colored Girls are as relevant today for young women as they were in the late ’70s when this play first hit the stage. After realizing through my daughter’s friends that most women 35 and under whose only experience of the play was from the 2010 theatrical film, lacked an understanding of the history and impact of this work that has enraptured audiences for decades now. As a producer and director and in celebration of women, I felt compelled to bring light to the transformative and transcending power of this play.” The powerful ensemble cast stars Baset, Tiffany Bacon, Meryl Lynn Brown, Tene Fletcher, TS Hawkins, Nicole Stacie and Deanna Wright. “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf,” published in 1975, is a Tony Award nominated experimental play, “chreopeom,” that has been performed Off-Broadway and on Broadway, adapted as a book, and a television and theatrical film. Having directed over 20 productions, this is Zuhairah’s second directorial of “For Colored Girls.” She continues to build her directorial legacy, not only on First World’s stage, but throughout the Greater Philadelphia region and beyond

including her latest work “He Called Me Rib” by Parenthysis Erica G. As part of First World’s WHO’s ON FIRST Monday Night Reading Series, Zuhairah will be direct the readings of Glenn Alan’s “Blues For Lula Mae Jenkins” April 1 and Charron Monaye’s “Get Out of Our Own Way” on April 29. Also in April, she will direct the stage production of Charron Monaye’s, “Living Your Life” in North Carolina and Joseph P. Blake’s “Muralista” June 7 through June 22, 2013 at First World Theatre. This production is made possible in partnership with the CEC. First World Theatre Ensemble, founded 2001 by Zuhairah McGill, is the 2012-13 / 2013-14 resident theatre company of the Community Education Center (CEC). As the Community Education Center (CEC) was founded by local community members to promote shared experiences and nurture fellowship among its varied neighborhoods across cultural and economic differences, through selected classic and original works First World leverages theatre as a powerful platform for social change and nurtures public conversations around critically important social issues that impact all of our lives. First World continues to commitment to achieve artistic excellence in professional theatre and bring quality to the stage as in the days of the Negro Ensemble. From left – Andi Gilbert, President, Bryn Mawr Hospital, and artist Jonathan Mandell, welcome guests at the reception. n March 6, Bryn Mawr Hospital hosted a reception marking the installation of a $50,000 signature work of art by local artist Jonathan Mandell in the Warden Lobby Quilt Room. The 6 by 8 foot piece, commissioned by the Bryn Mawr Hospital Foundation, features 16 images that speak to the hospital’s rich 100-plus year history and cutting edge future. It was made using many different materials, including ceramic tile, mirror metals and glass. The grout lines act as drawing lines, bringing the imagery to life as they establish both depth perspective and volume of form, and encourages people to view it up close and touch it. “We’re thrilled to have one of Jonathan Mandell’s mosaics at Bryn Mawr Hospital, especially one that is so personalized to reflect the staff and work that defines our hospital, said Bryn Mawr Hospital President Andi Gilbert. “It’s a signature piece that will welcome the community to Bryn Mawr Hospital for years to come. Jonathan Mandell’s work can be seen at the National Constitution Center, the National Museum of American Jewish History, the National Liberty Museum and Citizen’s Bank Park among others.

Featured heavily will be works by 20th century artists that were part of a recent gift to PAFA by Linda Lee Alter. Their diversity of perspectives can tell us a great deal about who we are and where we've come from, from the political statements of Faith Ringgold and Sue Coe, to the gorgeous abstractions of Edna Andrade and Elizabeth Osborne. GET READY FOR THE HOLIDAYS

THEATER COMPANY COLLABORATES WITH DANCE COMPANY FOR SPONTANEOUS EXPLORATION OF TIME TRAVEL “That Time” – Co-produced by the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (PIFA) ongue & Groove Spontaneous Theater is collaborating with dance company RealLifePeople(in)Motion, for a production called “That Time.” For this special PIFA production at Innovation Studio at the Kimmel Center, the two companies ask “If you could go back in time to any moment in your own life’s story, where would you go and why?” The answers inspire a oneof-a-kind, instantly-generated collage of dance, theater and music that captures the unique history and spirit of each audience. “That Time” has four shows only: Saturday, April 20 at 5 “That Time” performances are Saturday, April 20 at 5 p.m. p.m. & 8 p.m., and Sunday, April 21 at 3 p.m. & 7 p.m. at & 8 p.m., and Sunday, April 21 at 3 p.m. & 7 p.m. at Innovation Studio, The KimInnovation Studio, The Kimmel Center,, Philadelphia. mel Center, Broad & Spruce Streets, Philadelphia. Tickets available at: http://www.pifa.org/events/26. Tongue & Groove is a critically acclaimed theater ensemble that spontaneously performs unscripted scenes and monologues inspired by personal information anonymously submitted by the audience. RealLivePeople(in)Motion is a dynamic young dance ensemble that is similarly catalyzed by the audience’s true stories. Through this unique and honest artistaudience collaboration, both companies examine authentic relationships, and perform funny, thoughtful, physically dynamic, emotionally resonant theatre and dance.…that happens to be improvised. “When Jay Wahl, Director of Festival Partnerships, approached me with the idea that T&G work with a dance company for PIFA, I was hesitant; I wasn’t sure how it would work. But Jay described the similaries between each company’s approach, and I was intrigued. I went to a RLPiM rehearsal and I knew immediately it would be a great collaboration,” Says Bobbi Block, Artistic Director of Tongue & Groove. “We’re very excited to weave RLPiM’s form of improvised dance into our collage of spontaneous scenes and monologues.” Both groups strive to create accessible, relatable work, both humorous and touching, reflecting the human experience. In addition to the collaboration of actors and dancers, a musician and a visual artist are also part of the team. Each performance is enhanced by live improvised harmonica music. The set design is an interactive large-scale mural of a 100-year time-line, upon which audience members add their answer to the posed question. “Using this timeline is another way for our audience to become intimate with the performance—they walk onto the stage before the show begins and they add to the blank canvas personal emotional memories which will then inspire our work,” says Block. In order to practice, the actors and dancers have been working with friends and family’s answers to the posed question. “We’ve gotten some wonderful material,” says Gina Hoch-Stall, Director of RLPiM, “We’ve found that people are either drawn to go back in time to re-live thrilling experiences, or to change a decision they regret—this lends itself toward inspiring a powerful mix of both humorous and moving pieces.”

Martins Run Offers Seniors Customized Assistance with Preparing, Selling and Rightsizing their Homes Senior community’s new “Moving Forward” program artins Run recently debuted its Moving Forward program, a complimentary service for seniors that offers customized assistance with preparing, selling and rightsizing their homes. Partnered with HOMARC®, the Martins Run Moving Forward team will assist incoming residents in a number of ways to ensure an easy, stress-free move. The Martins Run Moving Forward team will also arrange a free professional pre-listing appraisal of the house and provide incoming residents with a seller’s home warranty, as well as staging suggestions to help them acquire a fast sale on their home and at the best market price. “Transitioning into a retirement lifestyle is an exciting time, but we understand the actual moving process can be a daunting task,” said Lorraine DellaFranco, SVP of sales and marketing at Martins Run. “Our job at Martins Run is to help make this transition from one’s home to their new home at Martins Run as easy and stress-free as possible. hat happens when you give a bunch of artistic teens a 30-page, 5x7 unfinished sketchbook, a choice of themes and three months to create something? The Sketchbook Project, that’s what, a global art project where participants from around the world fill the pages of uniform sketchbooks that form a traveling library. Since the program was started in 2006 by the Brooklyn-based Art House Co-op (slogan: “It’s like a concert tour, but with sketchbooks”), the library has grown to include more than 22,000 sketchbooks from more than 130 countries. “The Sketchbook Project has really filled a space for creative kids to generate something that’s completely authentic,” says Megan Culp, Upper School art teacher and advisor to the Art Club, which signed onto the 2013 Sketchbook Project in the fall. “To combine that with the feeling of creating something as part of a global community? I love the democracy of it all.” After selecting a “jumping off” theme (this year’s options included diagrams, strangers, dwellings, mystery and monochromatic), students set about filling their books with their artistic interpretations. Some rebound their books, others altered their covers. Some told stories through pictures, others filled their pages with Germantown Friends School sophomores Joanna Booth words. (of Mt. Airy) and Jane Kye (of Blue Bell) with the sketchJoanna Booth ’15 made a books they created for the 2013 Sketchbook Project. travel log, which opens with a picture of the front door of her house. She included drawings of places she’d like to visit, some real, some imaginary. An image of a shoe wears the tagline, “Takes me there.” “There’s no curriculum you have to follow, it’s more open, more loose,” says Booth. “It really makes you think outside the box.” Jane Kye ’15 chose to do a Chapbook, based on the 19th-century concept of a pocketsized booklet filled with inspirational words and images, exploring the theme “roads.” Inspired by graphic novels and using a variety of techniques, including drawing, painting and collage, Kye sprinkled poetry and prose throughout her book, some original, some borrowed, to show how life “takes you in different directions.” “You can reflect on yourself, your style, what speaks to you,” she explains. “You know you’re creating for an audience, but you’re not afraid to share your ideas because [there’s anonymity], you don’t know who’s reading your stuff.” In January, ten sketchbooks created by members of the GFS Art Club were sent to the Brooklyn Art Library to be organized and cataloged before beginning an eight-city tour around North America this month. Each book has a barcode; if someone checks it out, the code is scanned and the artist receives an email letting him or her know that someone read it. “Each sketchbook is like a little treasure, a visual message-in-a-bottle,” concludes Culp.

It is the story of a newly-minted teacher stressed out about facing her first class. The energetic stage production is an adaptation of the Emmy-winning TV show, Schoolhouse Rock, that aired in the 1970’s. All Upper School students participated in the show, singing and dancing their way through the classroom lessons, including Spanish and French, with cameos by Lady Liberty, Thomas Jefferson, Napoleon, and even Elvis.
