hiladelphia will witness, once again, the breathtaking beauty of cherry blossoms this spring and the Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival of Greater Philadelphia is being planned to highlight this wonderful feat of nature and its Japanese origins. The Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia (JASGP) is proud to present the festival for the 17th year. Between April 2 and April 13, 2014, dozens of fun and family friendly events are planned throughout the region—from Center City to the Main Line, from Old City to Fairmount Park. Without leaving home, Philadelphians can experience the best parts of Japan, including superior international performances, try time-honored arts and craft, and the colorful contemporary cultures of cosplay and anime. The 11 days of festivities build to the centerpiece event – Sakura Sunday taking place on Sunday, April 13 at the Fairmount Park Horticulture Center. This day-long outdoor celebration of all things Japanese is the final event of the Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival and

One is Gafanhoto’s hometown in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, and the other his first home city in the United States, Philadelphia. Through vibrant, stylized photographs, this show captures the unique landscapes of these two distinct cities, while simultaneously suggesting their similarities. moved to the USA almost three years ago. He studied Social Sciences for two years, but realized that he always wanted to mix this interest with the visual arts—choosing photography, which allows him to both express himself and work with art and sociology simultaneously. Gafanhoto’s current works focus on cityscapes and their interaction with nature, architecture, and many varieties of subjects in close-up, which are then edited, processed, and manipulated using several programs. The élite choir of the Creative and Performing Arts High School, Philadelphia, will present a concert at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 415 East Athens Avenue in Ardmore, on Sunday, March 30 at 4 p.m. Under the direction of Dorina Marrow, a former section leader in the St. Paul choir, the auditioned group has sung several times at the American Choral Association conventions and has appeared with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Composed of some sixty voices, the choir will present sacred music by Bach, Valverde and others and secular music including Robert Page’s setting from Bernstein’s Candide. The concert is open to all. Whether it's a story about dining with a vegetarian or successfully fighting a parking ticket, from hybrid cars to serving on a NYC criminal jury, Eli shows audiences that there’s hilarity in the ordinary. Comedian Jon Fisch, who appeared on the “Late Show with David Letterman,” is also featured in the comedy line-up. A staple in the NYC scene Jon performs regularly at Gotham Comedy Club, The World Famous Comic Strip Live, Comedy Cellar, and Broadway Comedy Club. Of his numerous credits, people seem most impressed with Jon being hand picked to open for Jerry Seinfeld at Gotham Comedy Club. Also featured on “The Late Show with David Letterman, Ross Bennett “dropped out of West Point to become a comedian…probably the greatest service I will ever do for my country” has been on the comedy attack for 30 years. This classic story has long been a family favorite! pper Darby Summer Stage presents Disney’s “The Little Mermaid, Jr.,” one of Disney’s most classic tales. Performances are on July 23, 24, 25, and 26 at 10:30 a.m. and on July 25 at 7:30 p.m. The show is approximately 70 minutes and is ideal for ages 4 and up. July 23 is a special additional performance! In a magical kingdom below the surface of the ocean, Ariel (Olivia Cicalese of Swarthmore) wishes desperately to leave her home and live a life above the water. First she must defy her father King Triton (Nicky Kirschner of Ardmore), make a deal with the sly and evil sea witch Ursula (Danielle Agan of Springfield) and convince Prince Eric (Scott Berkowitz of Havertown) that she is the girl with the beautiful voice. tand4Sudan, a dancing/standing marathon hosted by Merion Mercy’s Student Council, raised more than $15,000; 100% of the proceeds go to supporting Merion Mercy’s sponsored school in South Sudan. Stand4Sudan was filled with hours of dancing, games, entertainment, fun, and food. Close to 400 students and their families participated in this event. Many of the students embraced the Merion Mercy’s school year theme of “Mercy Girl Power” and donned their finest “Supergirl” costume. This added some serious fun while keeping an eye on a serious cause: educating children in need. In collaboration with ten Mercy schools throughout the U.S. and Guam, MMA set a goal to raise $10,000 (which was exceeded) to help support MMA’s sponsored school for the children in Nuba, South Sudan. MMA has been involved in The Mercy Girl Effect, a project that combines the efforts of Mercy schools across the nation. Together MMA collaborates to meet great need throughout the world focusing on girls’ education in the third world, allowing young women opportunities they would not have otherwise had. This is another example of MMA students promoting the Mercy Core Values to “live mercy and seek justice.”

Lockett, a resident of Ardmore, has spoken out on the use of the “r-word” in schools and his community. He was nominated for the award by Joe Denelsbeck, principal at Archbishop Carroll. Winners were invited to a celebratory breakfast at the National Constitution Center on March 20, as well as a leadership conference at Widener University this fall. Winners also receive a scholarship of $20,000 over four years if they enroll at Widener University.

The Annual Gala celebration will also honor Susan Starr, a Philadelphia native who rocked the classical music world when at the age of 19 she traveled to Moscow, USSR, during the Cold War, and won the silver medal of the Tchaikovsky Competition, a citadel of Russian and world-level classical music competitions. Susan Starr was Elena BermanGantard’s (The Director of the Nelly Berman School of Music) first American teacher, when Elena and Nelly Berman arrived to USA from the former Soviet Union, with only $17 in their pocket. Incredibly, Susan Starr agree to teach Elena for free, understanding that her gift of music lessons would allow a young talented, hard working student a chance to succeed in music. She spent two to three hours per week, for a year, imparting her knowledge, skills and a love for music performance. It is in this spirit of generously supporting young talented musicians to achieve their highest potential that the Berman family founded NBSCMI, a 510 (c)(3) scholarship program which continues to nurture and train talented and hard working students, for whom music is a passion. The Festival will be opened with a new event – Karaoke Kickoff where people will be singing their favorite songs with food, drink, and fun on Wednesday, April 2 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Yakitori Boy located 211 N. 11th Street in Philadelphia. This event brings together karaoke and izakaya experiences – a Japanese style pub – at Philadelphia’s 1st izakaya and upscale karaoke lounge. Tickets are $25 for members of the JASGP and $30 for non-members. The final weekend of the Festival will feature another new event, Sakura Under the Stars. This event is an ohanami party beneath the blossoming cherry trees with food drink and entertainment, which is the traditional return-of-spring celebration in Japan. It is an upscale reception held at Shofuso Japanese House and Garden and features high-end bento boxes, sake samplings, and beautifully blooming cherry trees. Guests are invited to enjoy an evening in authentic ohanami style – picnicking beneath blossoms. Sakura Under the Stars is on Saturday, April 12 at 5 p.m. at the Shofuso Japanese House and Garden at Horticultural and Lansdowne Drives, Philadelphia. Tickets are $80 for JASGP members and $100 for nonmembers. The remainder of the Festival events are as plentiful as ever. The Cherry Blossom 5K will move to Saturday, April 12 and will give runners and walkers great views of Shofuso Japanese House and Garden and other Fairmount Park landmarks. At the many Tamagawa University Taiko Drum and Dance Performances, people will listen to thundering drums, watch intricate dances and beautiful costumes. People get hands on experience with kimono dressing, origami and other activities at Japanese Culture Week taking place at the Liberty Place Rotunda at 16th & Chestnut streets. There will be a food tasting, dinner, film screening and more. The central inspiration of the Cherry Blossom Festival is the fragile beauty of the sakura, the Japanese name for the ornamental cherry blossoms which inspire all of this cultural activity. The Cherry Blossom trees in Fairmont Park were first planted in 1926 and they were a gift to nation by the people of Japan. Cherry Blossoms are gorgeous, delicate flowers and are an annual inspiration to photographers and a “must see” natural wonder calling everyone outdoors. The events of the Festival celebrate Philadelphia’s rich cultural connections with the art, music, food, natural beauty and industry of Japan. The Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival of Greater Philadelphia, a project of the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia (JASGP), with tremendous support from Subaru of America, Inc as title sponsor. The project aims to foster a better understanding of the cultural, social, and educational customs of Japan building on the JASGP commitment to plant and maintain cherry trees in local parks. To date, JASGP has planted more than 1,000 cherry trees, supplementing the 1,600 flowering trees presented by the Japanese government as a gesture of friendship in 1926. Upon completion of its 1,000tree pledge in 2007, the JASGP shifted its focus to plantings in community and neighborhood parks to help green and beautify urban communities. Since 2008, cherry trees have been planted in Clark Park, Franklin Square, and Morris Park. he Baldwin School community, including parents, faculty, staff, trustees and alumnae gathered March 15 in the school’s Residence building for Baldwin’s 125th Anniversary Year Parent Gala & Auction. More than 300 guests enjoyed an evening of cocktails, dinner, dancing and live and silent auctions. There was also Cirque du Soleil-themed entertainment throughout the evening. The support of this year’s Gala will provide financial scholarships to academically deserving students and will enhance academic, athletic, and performing arts programs, helping Baldwin girls reach their full potential. This year’s Gala had record-breaking numbers and raised more than a half million dollars.

Immaculata Symphony Holds Spring Concert he Immaculata Symphony will hold its annual Spring Concert on Saturday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m. in Alumnae Hall on the campus of Immaculata University. The Brandywine Singers, under the direction of Jonathan Kreamer, join Maestro Joseph Gehring, musical director and conductor of the Immaculata Symphony for this concert. Among the special guest performers are Kim Kronenberg Russell, soprano and Randall Scarlata, baritone. The music from Jean Sibelius’s Karelia Suite opens the concert. The inspiring music of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem is a plea for peace and a glorious work for soprano and baritone solos, chorus, and an orchestra. Rounding out the concert is the uplifting Rainbow Body, a new work by Christopher Theofanidis that is based on an ancient medieval chant. In addition to serving as music director and conductor for the Immaculata Symphony, Gehring also serves in that capacity for the Chester County Pops Orchestra, West Chester Band, and the Immaculata University Concert Band and he is an active conductor, pianist, and educator. He is a frequent guest conductor of various honor/festival bands and orchestras throughout Pennsylvania and Delaware. He recently earned a Master of Music Performance degree in orchestral conducting. Cost for the concert is $12 for general admission, $10 for senior citizens, $6 for students, and free for children under the age of 12. Tickets are also available by mail to Immaculata Symphony, 1145 King Road, Immaculata, PA 19345-0703, with checks made payable to Immaculata Symphony.
