hat does it mean to be a white man in America today? What does “whiteness” look like? Is there a shared experience of being white and male, and if so, what is it? Hot on the heels of a recent Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery survey of his own work (OPP: Other People’s Property), photo conceptual artist Hank Willis Thomas seeks to answer those questions and others with a new Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery exhibit, White Boys. White Boys, opening March 22, 2013, in Haverford College’s Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery, gathers the work of 17 artists across various media (video, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture) to grapple with “whiteness.” Unlike images of black, female or queer bodies, which are so often viewed through the lenses of the communities they are representing or as examples of “otherness,” images of white men are often presented as “the norm.” But whiteness and masculinity, depending on one’s perspective, can conjure an array of competing associations, emotions and images, including privilege, invisibility, fear, anxiety, purity, emptiness and cowardice. The artists in this exhibition – Chris Berntsen, Blakely Thomas Dadson, Sean Fader, Lisa Fairstein, Gregory Halpern, Jessica Ingram, Jeremy Kost, Noah Krell, Steve Locke, Philip Metz, Richard Mosse, Eva O’Leary, Michael Ratulowski, Bayeté Ross Smith, Matt Salacuse, Paul Mpagi Sepuya and Travis Somerville – variously envision the white male body, not as an emblem of persistent neutrality or normalcy, but as a cipher through which

The Leunissen Lecture, delivered every year on the anniversary of Neumann’s founding, is free and open to the public. Fr. Ciorra will speak in the Meagher Theatre as part of the University’s 48th Charter Day celebration. The Second Vatican Council was called by Pope John XXIII and lasted from 1962-65. n awards ceremony was recently held at Arcadia University to celebrate the winners of the 26th annual “Touch the Future” art show. Students from 27 Bucks and Montgomer y county public high schools submitted artwork to the professionally juried show, which began as a tribute to Christa McAuliffe, NASA’s teacher in space who died aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger. Three best of show winners were chosen along with 14 category winners, three PSEA purchase prize winners, and a juror’s prize winner from the approximately 300 pieces of artwork submitted by teachers throughout Bucks and Montgomery Counties. sity also awarded the first place winner a $1,500 achievement award, second place winner a $1,000 achievement award and third place winner a $500 achievement award for every year of full-time undergraduate study at Arcadia University. Sponsored by the Mideastern Region of the Pennsylvania State Education Association (MER/PSEA) and the Council for the Advancement of Public Schools (CAPS), this year’s show was juried by Carole Loeffler, associate professor of art and design at Arcadia University. “All of the students with work in this exhibition are to be celebrated,” said Loeffler. “Rarely do we get to see See “Touch the Future” on page 8
