AUTHOR ETHAN GILSDORF SPEAKS AT BRYN MAWR COLLEGE Continued from front page

Gilsdorf’s book “Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks” is an exploration and celebration of fantasy and gaming subcultures. On a quest that begins in his own geeky teenage past and ends in our online gaming future, former D&D addict Gilsdorf crisscrosses America, the world, and other worlds —from Boston to Wisconsin, France to New Zealand, and Planet Earth to Middle-earth to the realm of Aggramar. Readers join Gilsdorf as he participates in gaming and fantasy subcultures and asks game-players and fantasy fans – old, young, male, female, able-bodied and disabled – what attracts them to fantasy worlds. What he discovers about them, and him, is funny, poignant, and enlightening. About “Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks,” Wired.com says, “For anyone who has ever spent time within imaginary realms, the book will speak volumes. For those who have not, it will educate and enlighten.” Gilsdorf was an obsessive Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) player back in the 1980s. He quit the fantasy role-playing game when he graduated from high school. Decades later, at age 40, Gilsdorf found a box of his old D&D gear in his parents’ basement. The discovery inspired him to write the book. “When I was a teen, fantasy gaming was on the fringes,” he said. “Today, ‘geek’ is no longer a four-letter word.” Fantasy and gaming subcultures covered in the book include role-playing and online games like D&D and World of Warcraft, readers of J.R.R. Tolkien’s books and viewers of the Lord the Rings movies, and participants in live-action role-playing games (LARPs), the medieval reenactment group the Society for Creative Anachronism and fantasy conventions like Dragon*Con. “What lured serious gamers today, particularly adults, into fantasy worlds? And why? Was fantasy healthy, unhealthy, or something in between? I wanted to find out,” Gilsdorf said. “I was inspired to set off on a journey through my old hobby and see how fantasy and gaming had changed, and what new fantasy worlds now existed. And to see how much I had changed, too.” Ethan Gilsdorf is a journalist, memoirist, critic, poet, teacher and geek, and author of the award-winning travel memoir investigation “Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks: An Epic Quest for Reality Among Role Players, Online Gamers, and Other Dwellers of Imaginary Realms.” Based in Somerville, Massachusetts, he publishes travel, arts, and pop culture sto-

“Ruined Coming to The Stagecrafters uined, the Pulitzer Prize winning play by Lynn Nottage, opens at The Stagecrafters theater on Friday, April 12. The story, set during the seemingly endless horrific civil conflict raging in today’s Democratic Republic of the Congo, centers on shrewd businesswoman Mama Nadi, who runs a bar and brothel near a mining town. Her place becomes a ‘neutral zone’ for rebel and government soldiers looking for a good time and also serves as a refuge for the scarred and suffering women whom Mama Nadi both profits from and protects. Based on true reports, the play presents an extremely compelling picture of women caught in the hell of war, often driven to the

Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church to Host “Jazz Fest for Peace” Jazz Festival to benefit “Heeding God’s Call,” a n response to the tragedies caused by illegal guns in the Philadelphia region and beyond, Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church is hosting “Jazz Fest for Peace,” a 2-day jazz festival on May 4-5 at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, with all proceeds benefitting Heeding God’s Call, a faith-based movement to prevent gun violence. The festival will feature three events: a dinner at 6 p.m. on May 4 with a jazz ensemble performance by student musicians from Philadelphia’s renowned Girard Academic Music Program (GAMP); an 8 p.m. concert on May 4 by well-known jazz musician Gerald Veasley; and a 1 p.m. concert on May 5 featuring jazz musician Bill Jolly. Representatives of various groups working toward a community free of gun violence will also be at the festival to offer attendees opportunities for volunteering and a program book to serve as a resource guide. Jeffrey Brillhart, Fine Arts Director at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, said that the idea for the jazz festival stemmed from the church asking what it could do to benefit an organization doing transformational work in Philadelphia’s inner-city neighborhoods. “When I learned of the work that Heeding God’s Call was doing, I invited its founder, Bryan Miller, to come and speak about what he would be able to do if the festival’s profits were channeled in his direction,” Brillhart said. “I had heard Bryan speak before and always felt inspired by his work, but sitting face to face I realized that of all the organizations we had researched, Heeding

I

faith-based movement to prevent gun violence God’s Call most-wonderfully complemented what we as a church stood for. As Bryan spoke, I kept thinking, ‘here is a man who could truly persuade people to do good!’” All funds raised during the jazz festival will benefit Heeding God’s Call and help them to acquire newer technology to reach thousands of new supporters, distribute educational materials for outreach into all Delaware Valley communities, fund more high-visibility public events throughout the area, and obtain professional assistance in spreading the organization’s campaign throughout the city and suburbs where gun shops are located. Tickets for the three events of “Jazz Fest for Peace” are as follows: • 6 p.m. dinner & jazz ensemble performance by GAMP on May 4: $20 for adults; $10 for children age 12 and under. • 8 p.m. concert on May 4 featuring Gerald Veasley: $30 general admission; $50 preferred seating. • 1 p.m. concert on May 5 featuring Bill Jolly: $30 general admission; $50 preferred seating. For information, or to purchase tickets, call 610-525-2821 or visit www.bmpc.org. Randall Culp, M.D. Receives HVO’s 2013 Golden Apple Award

Randall Culp, M.D., CKHS hand surgeon and a volunteer with the Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) Honduras Hand Surgery program, was recently selected as a recipient of the HVO’s 2013 Golden Apple Award. ave you ever thought about what it would feel like if you were unable to make a simple phone call for a doctor’s appointment? We often take for granted what a luxury it is to have a reliable doctor at an arm’s reach. Randall Culp, M.D., CKHS hand surgeon and a volunteer with the Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) Honduras Hand Surgery program, was recently selected as a recipient of the HVO’s 2013 Golden Apple Award. The Golden Apple Award was created by the HVO Board of Directors in 2006 as a way to honor those who volunteer their services and demonstrate the extraordinary commitment to HVO’s ideals of education and knowledge. The HVO programs were designed to provide local health care pro-

fessionals with skills and knowledge that will strengthen the health care sector’s ability to deliver better health care to more people. “What many people don’t realize is that medicine is nonexistent in some countries. In Honduras, half the population lives off of less than one dollar a day. I don’t even think you can buy a cup of coffee for less than a dollar in Philadelphia,” Culp says. “I began volunteering in the early 2000s, and a few years later I started visiting Honduras and just fell in love – with the people and the country. Honduras is so incredibly poor, and volunteering is a great way to give back. This work is so gratifying for me and I feel that the best gift in the world is to give back to other people.” During the week-long visit, Culp and his fellows will see around 100 patients; women and children first and finishing with the men. The men have a tendency to suffer from incidents with machetes. Culp mentioned a six-month-old little girl suffering from an issue where she was born with 12 fingers. Her mother put her on a bus with a note stating this was the girl’s only shot of being treated, and thankfully Culp was able to help. “I take a group of fellows with me along with college and medical students,” Culp says. “This is a great way for them to see the practice of medicine overseas. I also have fellows from Honduras who come and stay with me for a week so that they can see first-hand how we work in the states. Since I have been volunteering, I have received an immense amount of positive feedback and I feel as if this has been my calling. It has been a great way to help get the word out there. “Being selected as a recipient for the Golden Apple Award has truly felt like one of my highest accomplishments,” Culp continues. “My trips are extremely rewarding and being nominated by a group of my peers has really been moving.” Right now, Culp makes one trip a year. As for the future, he hopes to soon increase that one trip to two, with more fellows and visits to more countries. There has been more interest in international medicine because of Culp’s accomplishments, and lending a helping hand will always be one of his number-one priorities. Culp is a member of the Crozer-Keystone/Philadelphia Hand Center Partnership, which brings patients local access to the latest advances and knowledge in diagnosing and treating injuries of the hand and wrist. Documentary “Kecksburg – The Untold Story” featuring Stan Gordon n 1965 an acorn-like object with a fiery tail swept low across the town of Kecksburg, Pennsylvania and crashed into a wooded area just south of town. Dozens of people witnessed this object and several rushed to the crash site. Just minutes later, police and military arrived and cordoned off the area, barring spectators, even the property owner and his family. Learn the details about this famous Pennsylvania event as told by Stan Gordon, a MUFON researcher who brought this story to light in a 92-minute video Tuesday, April 16, at Tredyffrin Public Library, Strafford. The free meeting is at 6:30 p.m. The Kecksburg event is just as significant as Roswell, Gordon maintains. (He referred to Roswell, NM, site of an alleged 1947 UFO crash.) “It’s an intriguing story,” he said in a recent interview, “…and we still don’t have an answer. A lot of key witnesses have passed away, are up in age, or not in the best of health. This was the best way to have them tell their story themselves about what they experienced.” Main Line MUFON meets each month (mainly Tuesday evenings) at 6:30 p.m. at Tredyffrin Public Library, 582 Upper Gulph Road, Strafford, PA 19087. The meeting is free and open to the public. For info, visit www.MainLineMUFON.com or contact Jennifer W. Stein: MainLineMUFON@ comcast.net or call 610-613-0088.

Laurel Hill Cemetery Presents “Astronomy Night: Stargazing from the Cemetery” rab a blanket and take a tour of the cosmos with local astronomers. As part of the Philadelphia Science Festival (www.philasciencefestival.org), over 20 venues in and around the city will play host to astronomy night star parties with amateur astronomers coming out en mass with their telescopes to show locals the wonders of the night sky. (If you have your own telescope or binoculars, bring them along. Also, don’t forget to bring your own blankets, beach chairs, beverages and/or snacks! Relaxing and stargazing from Philly’s most ethereal site = a perfect way to end the week!) While the sun doesn’t set until nearly 8 p.m. on Astronomy Night, Laurel Hill’s gates will open early at 6 p.m. for an array of family-friendly activities, where children will learn how to “measure” the night sky with their hands, and to observe features on the moon. During these twilight hours, families are also welcome to bring picnics or explore the site before night-viewing activities kick off. Astronomy Night at Laurel Hill Cemetery will take place on Friday, April 26. Gates open at 6 p.m. Visitors can enter through Laurel Hill’s Gatehouse at 3822 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19132. Free parking is located in the lot across the street from the Gatehouse. Admission to the event is free and open to the public. For information, call 215-228-8200 or visit www.thelaurelhillcemetery.org.

Inaugural Bike Ride Benefits Cyclists with Disabilities s notices of Charity Bike Rides begin to litter the landscape of bike shops across our region, how is a good hearted cyclist to decide which rides to choose? While there is no shortage of good causes, the PA Center for Adapted Sports (PCAS) offers something unique to the cycling community: the chance for cyclists to help other cyclists. On Sunday, May 5, 2013, the Cinco de Mayo Benefit Bike Ride and Walk will be held in Exton, PA to support this Philadelphia based organization that provides lifestyle sport and recreation programs to people (and cyclists) with disabilities. With specialized equipment and a dedicated team of volunteers, the PA Center for Adapted Sports makes ten different lifestyle sport programs available to Center participants. This is necessary since finding viable ways to maintain one’s health and wellness can be a struggle for the 1,000’s of mothers, sons and veterans in our community living with a disability. “It’s great to know that my loss of vision can’t keep me from enjoying the sports I love,” says PCAS Cyclist, Bruce Linsky. He added, “I come to the Center for the same camaraderie and love of sport found in any bike club.” The Center serves not just those with vision loss, however. Cerebral Palsy, spinal cord injury, loss of limb, stroke, MS, Parkinson’s—no permanent physical disability is outside their scope. For people like Linsky, “our programs become a lifeline,” says Executive Director, Jeff McGinnis, “and we know we can’t do it alone.” Your participation in the Cinco de Mayo Benefit Bike Ride and Walk provides an avenue for cyclists with disabilities to feel the same endorphin induced high that keeps all cyclists climbing back on their bikes day after day, year after year. Visit www.cincodemayoride.org to donate or register for this inaugural event, sponsored by BAYADA Home Health Care. For the avid cyclist, the 25 and 50 mile road rides will showcase some of our region’s most beautiful landscapes, while more recreational riders can pick their own distance along the equally scenic, flat and paved Chester Valley Trail. Having a variety of terrain and distances available allows both avid cyclists and recreational riders to enjoy a day of cycling together. Organizers anticipate a festive day with great food and music…Cinco de Mayo style. For information, contact Event Chairperson, Loretta Cohen at rideinfo@centeronline.com or 484-876-1245.

n Wednesday, March 20, Gucci hosted a private cocktail party at the House’s King of Prussia store to celebrate the “Handbag Artisan Corner.” The exclusive event brought the craftsmanship of Gucci’s Florentine leather goods factory directly to its clientele, allowing guests to view skilled artisans assembling some of the House’s most iconic handbags. Hope Cohen, Andrea Freundlich, Pauline McDaniel and Lindy Snider hosted more than 150 guests in attendance, and a portion of sales proceeds supported Mission Kids in its efforts to help children triumph over trauma, achieve justice for child victims and promote their physical and emotional wellbeing.

The panel includes the film’s critically acclaimed producer, Dan Protess, architect, planner, writer and principal of the firm Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates in Philadelphia, Denise Scott Brown, and David Brownlee, founding executive director of PennPraxis, the applied research arm of the School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania.
