James Gordon has had a remarkably diverse 40-year career in the Canadian entertainment business. As a solo singer-songwriter and with the ground-breaking trio Tamarack, he has released over forty albums, and has toured relentlessly around the world. Gordon has written for symphony orchestras, musical theatre and dance works, film scores, and for more than ten years was heard on CBC radio as songwriter-in-residence for the Basic Black and Ontario Morning programs.

His song Mining For Gold was featured in the John Sayles film Silver City, and was included on the classic Cowboy Junkies album The Trinity Sessions. UNTITLED is a monologue play in two parts, with one actor playing twin brothers born on Nigeria’s Independence Day. But on the night of their traditional naming ceremony, one infant brother cries out and refuses to be named plunging him into a life of chaos.

Previews begin Wednesday, April 24, with opening night on Friday, April 26. The show runs through May 12, 2019 for a total of 15 performances. All performances will take place at the Louis Bluver Theatre at the Drake, 302 South Hicks Street, Philadelphia. Tickets are $15 - $35. For reservations, visit https://inisnuatheatre.org.

Bus Trip to Fort Frederick 18th-Century Market Fair On Friday, April 26, 2019, the Friends of the Daniel Boone Homestead are sponsoring a bus trip to the 18th-Century Market Fair at Fort Frederick, MD. This re-enactment of a colonial era frontier trade fair features artisans, craftspeople and sutlers selling their 18th-century reproduction wares.

In addition, lots of 18th-century entertainment is found throughout the grounds as well as hundreds of people in colonial garb! Ticket price of $45 includes: bus fare, breakfast muffin & juice, $5 adult admission to the Trade Fair, and a small donation to the Homestead. Japanese Entertainers & More on Stage at Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival – April 14 Japanese entertainers will be featured as part of the Japanese cultural experience at Sakura Sunday, the culminating event of the 22nd annual Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival on Sunday, April 14, 2019. Presented by the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia (JASGP), many forms of Japanese culture will be celebrated through live music, dance performances, martial arts and tea ceremony demonstrations, a cosplay showcase, a sushi-making contest, and so much more. D E M O N S T R AT I O N O F O R I E N TA L A R T The Friends of the Marple Public Library in Broomall present a free program titled “Dancing Brush and Rhythmic Ink.” The workshop offers a playful fusion of East and West Chinese Brush Paint ing demonstrated by Josephine C. Tsai. Josephine, a founder of the Chinese Brush Painters and Calligraphers Society USA, devotes much of her time to studying, sharing and practicing Chinese art. Her works often combine three distinct styles of Chi nese painting, the Realistic style, the Spontaneous style and the Ink Splashed style, allowing the positive aspects of each to create a lively impression. At the same time, her artistic details invite the viewer to explore the spirit of the art. “My dancing brush and singing ink merge into my passion for the outside world and the joy of my inner being.” Participants will observe the balance of Yin and Yang in harmony and delight when brush and ink touch rice paper. Used Book Sale at Lenkenau The Women’s Board of Lankenau Medical Center in Wynnewood will hold a used book sale on Wednesday, April 17 (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and Thurs day, April 18 (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) in the Health Education area of the main lobby. Thousands of books of all types and age are available for perusal and purchase. Vitali to Host Real ID Informational Session State Rep. Greg Vitali will host a Real ID Town Hall from noon to 1:30 p.m., Thursday, April 18 at the Haverford Township Administration Building, 1014 Darby Road, 19083. A representative from the state Transportation Department will be on-site to explain Real ID and help answer questions and concerns. “The session will be a great way for people to have their questions about Real ID answered by a PennDOT representative,” Vitali said. Real IDs are now available through PennDOT. After Oct. 1, 2020, a Real ID-compliant license or ID card, or a U.S. Passport or Military ID, will be necessary to board a domestic commercial flight or enter a secure federal facility. The continuing focus of attention is the hilarious and biting ‘merry war of the sexes’ waged by one of these duos, Beatrice and Benedick, whose verbal jousting features some of the author’s wittiest wordplay.

William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616) is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language. His works include 39 plays, plus a large body of sonnets and other poetry. He grew up in Stratford-Upon-Avon and enjoyed a long and successful career in London, not only as an actor/writer, but also part-owner of a production company called The Lord Chamberlain’s. His plays run the gamut: comedies … A Midsummer Night’s Dream, As You Like It; Twelfth Night; historical pieces: Henry V, Richard III; tragedies: Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear.

He is thought to have completed Much Ado About Nothing in 1598, though it did not have its first formal performance until the winter of 1612-1613 at the royal court. In productions over the centuries, its singular protagonists Benedick and Beatrice stand out as belonging among the most sought-after parts in theater repertories. The esteemed John Gielgud made Benedick the signature role of his career, from 1931 - 1959, opposite the Beatrices of Peggy Ashcroft and Margaret Leighton. Katherine Hepburn played Beatrice in a 1957 production at Stratford, Ontario. The longest Broadway run of the play, in 1972, showcased Sam Waterston as Benedick; the Tony Award for Best Actor in a leading role (Benedick) was earned

by Derek Jacobi in 1984; and in 2013, James Earl Jones and Vanessa Redgrave (both well past seventy!) held forth in a bold production at The Old Vic in London!

Pat Ciarrocchi April Tasty Talks Speaker Realtor Michelle Leonard’s Tasty Talks Luncheon April 24 at Yangming at Ciarrocchi, former CBS3 Eye Witness anchor, will be the next Tasty Talks speaker at Yangming on Aril 24. Pat, the first female inducted into the Pennsylvania Broadcasters Hall of Fame, has been a local TV news anchor longer than any other woman. Tasty Talks founder and host, realtor Michelle Leonard, was thrilled that she had secured this native Philadelphian TV anchor as the April speaker.

A graduate of Rosemont College, Pat Ciarrocchi began her broadcasting career in 1974 at WAMS Radio in Wilmington, then became a reporter for WHAG-TV in Hagerstown, MD. She joined CBS3 Eyewitness News in 1982, where she served as morning and noon co-anchor for nearly two decades. In 2001, she was promoted to co-anchor of CBS3’s Evening Magazine. UNTITLED at Inis Nua Theatre Continued from front page

“Inua Ellams’ writing is a masterful use of language and character. The audience is met with two competing narratives that at once directly contrast each other while at the same time remain hopelessly intertwined,” says Director Jerrell L. Henderson.

Inua Ellams’ mysterious and wild play UNTITLED tells the story of twin boys born in Nigeria.

Under the first full moon of their lives, they are given a traditional naming ceremony: one brother responds to his name with a baby’s laugh, the other cries out and rejects his name.

These first moments shape their lives with the named brother (Y) leading a life of order with a plan, education, and predictable career and the unnamed brother (X) existing in a world of chaos, tumult and lack of follow-through. The two brothers are separated at 7 months old when Y is taken to England by their mother. X stays behind in Nigeria, until their deep connection forces them back together.

UNTITLED was first read by Inis Nua’s Literary Manager in 2015 and was presented as a reading in their successful 2016/2017 Reading Series – Immigration Stories. The passionate audience response and unique theatrical style prompted the theatre company to produce a full production. Artistic Director Tom Reing wanted to bring the show to Philadelphia because “I like the blending of tradition and modernity. It’s a great role for an actor to perform.”

The Stage called UNTITLED “bewitching” and The Guardian praised the show, saying “there is a great deal to enjoy in a piece that feels both modern and ancient, touched by the otherworldly yet grounded in reality.” UNTITLED was developed by England’s Fuel and Soho Theatre and first performed at the Bristol Old Vic in 2010.

Originally performed by the playwright, Inis Nua will be the first company to mount their own production of UNTITLED, exploring this play that asks whether our fates are decided by ourselves, our cultures, or our family histories.

The director and solo actor are both new to Inis Nua. Keith Illidge will be performing both brothers X and Y. The show is helmed by Guest Director Jerrell L. Henderson who Artistic Director Tom Reing says, “Has a reputation as a great collaborator with passion. He directed Salt, Pepper, Ketchup at InterAct and Passage Theatres this year and his status in Philadelphia theatre has grown. I felt his interest in folklore and mythology made him a great fit for the piece.”

The dual nature of the play poses unique design challenges, with two locations (London and Nigeria) and two characters portrayed by the same actor.

Actor Keith Illidge takes on the challenging role of playing both brothers. Keith is a Delaware native who has worked in film, TV, and theatre in Philadelphia, New York, and Chicago.

He received a Black Theatre Alliance Award nomination for his portrayal of Lincoln in Suzan Lori Park’s “Topdog/Underdog” at Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre in Chicago. In Philadelphia, Keith has performed with Theatre in the X, Allens Lane, and the Prince Music Theatre.

UNTITLED opens Friday, April 26, 2019 at 8 p.m., with preview performances Wednesday, April 24 and Thursday, April 25, at 7 p.m. It runs for a total of 15 performances through Sunday, May 12, at 2 p.m. All performances will take place at the Louis Bluver Theatre at the Drake, 302 South Hicks Street, Philadelphia, PA 19102. South Hicks Street is right next to The Drake apartment building at 1512 Spruce Street.

The Takeaway – special post-show talks – will be held after the 7 p.m. performances on Wednesdays, May 1 and 8. The Takeaway is a post-show exploration of the play’s themes and relevant events by guest scholars and theatre practitioners. The May 1 Takeaway will feature a conversation with Nigerian-American textile artist Yemisi Ajayi about her work.

The May 8 Takeaway will feature the actor and members of the production team.

Mission Week at Merion Mercy

The MMA community has raised money for “The Mercy Girl Effect,” a project combining the efforts of Mercy schools across the nation, for several years. Together, a group of Mercysponsored schools collaborate to improve the quality of life for people in developing nations with a special emphasis on girls and education. In recent years, the MMA students helped to raise money to build a library in Kenya and schools in Cambodia and South Sudan.

This year, student focused their fundraising efforts on supporting women in several nations around the world—the Philippines, Panama, Lebanon, and Haiti.

In the fall of 2018, Neumann began its inaugural season in ECAC eSports, a league of online video gaming which began in 2016. It currently includes 23 schools and 117 teams with competition in a variety of games such as Fortnite, League of Legends, FIFA, Overwatch, Hearthstone, and Super Smash Bros.

Neumann’s eSports team participates mainly in the Fortnite competitions. Released in 2017, Fortnite is an increasingly popular video game that requires both strategy and skill.

The game is set after a storm causes 98% of the population to disappear, and the survivors are attacked by zombie-like creatures. The players take the role of commanders whose troops collect resources, save survivors, and defend equipment to push back the storm. There are three different versions of the game – Fortnite: Save the World, Fortnite Battle Royale, and Fortnite Creative.

Esports allows players to apply their skillset in a competitive environment that is more than just a popular pastime. Leading up to these competitions, members of the Neumann eSports team practice both individually and as a team. Despite many practices and matches being held solely online, there are still social connections being made within the club and outside of it.

“The biggest thing is that you get to meet so many cool people through eSport matches,” says Duncan McNeil, who practices with members from opposing teams. “It’s all about the connections that are made.” Occasionally, the ECAC hosts in-person tournaments. These matches can be attended physically or streamed online.

In some ways, ECAC eSports is very comparable to other collegiate sports. “Similar to most sports, there is a playoff structure within the ECAC. I am not currently aware of a national competition that would expand outside of that, but new leagues are forming every day, so I would not be surprised if that is on the horizon,” says David Deal, director of campus recreation.

Esports is certainly gaining popularity. Comcast Spectator recently announced that it will be constructing an eSports gaming arena in the very near future. The 3,500-seat arena will house a large audience that can watch players compete in their video games.

According to a February 2019 article in Inside Higher Ed, some universities are incorporating eSports into their academic programs and others are elevating clubs to full team status. Several colleges have even begun offering eSports scholarships. The National Association of Collegiate Esports, which began in 2016 with six members, has grown to include 128 colleges.

This popularity is an indication that the Neumann University eSports club may grow.

“Similar to most sports teams at Neumann University, the eSports club is always open for new members,” says Deal. In fact, the team is actively recruiting and is looking to expand into other games.

Wright’s brother was involved in a serious motorcycle accident in 1982 and needed several blood transfusions during his four-month recovery. She lived over 120 miles away at the time. Unable to be near him, she decided she could help by donating blood. Wright has continued to donate and recently completed her 11th gallon of donated blood – 88 lifesaving blood donations.

Nontheists and Muslims Together – Helping Feed People in Need The Freethought Society will be participating in the Philabundance program entitled “Dinner Meal Service – Sundays,” on Sunday, April 28, 2019, working side-by-side with Muslims Serve. The event takes place 4 p.m.

Volunteers will gather at the Dilworth Park Café & Air Grille (North 15th Street, Philadelphia) at 3 p.m. to meet each other and begin planning the meal service. Duties will include making and serving food plates, setting up and breaking down tables, preparing place settings, bussing tables, washing dishes, packing and distributing items, cleaning, and recruiting more guests to eat.

During the Mass, members of their faculty and staff were honored for celebrating milestone anniversaries this year, including a 40 year anniversary.

Steve Clarke has been a teacher at Holy Child for 40 years, but his Holy Child journey originally began in 1963 when he enrolled as a preschool student. He graduated from Holy Child in 1973 and was hired as an assistant teacher and football coach at the school in 1979.

Steve is not only a faculty member and alumnus, but he is also a parent who sent his two daughters, Kerry (Class of 2001) and Stephanie (Class of 2003), through the school.

“What I treasure most about Holy Child are the relationships that I have developed with different people over the years,” Steve reflected. “To me, it is more than just the place where I work; it is truly my second family. I feel a tremendous sense of pride when I see members of that family go out into the world and become successful people, not just within their occupations, but also at life in general.”

Registration Open for 18th Annual Elizabeth Ciunci Foundation Butterfly Run Registration is now open for the 18th Annual Elizabeth Ciunci Foundation Butterfly Run, which supports scholarships for students pursuing degrees in early childhood education. The foundation was established in honor of 19 year-old Elizabeth Ciunci, a Great Valley High School student tragically killed in 1999 by a drunk driver on the Schuylkill Expressway. Funds raised by the foundation support an endowment at Delaware County Community College, scholarships for local area high school seniors, raise awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving, and sponsor community organizations that aid children struggling with learning disabilities – a passion of Elizabeth’s. This year’s event will include a 5k run/walk and a 1 Mile “Fun Walk” and Easter Egg Hung on Saturday, April 20, 2019. 7th Annual Find Her Footing 5K Walk, Run and Kids Dash Adoptions From The Heart will host their 7th Annual Find Her Footing 5K Walk, Run and Kids Dash on Sunday, April 28, 2019 at West Laurel Hill Bala Cynwyd, PA. Event registration begins at 8:30 a.m. on site, and the race will start at 10 a.m. The family-friendly event will also hold a special run for the children, the “Kids Dash” starting at 9:30 a.m. Children are encouraged to dress up as their favorite superhero in honor of fellow adoptee and superhero Clark Kent aka Superman. Participants and onlookers can partake in raffles featuring a top-notch selection of prizes from local business.
