DON’T IGNORE YOUR TEETH.
Old Academy Players presents the delightful musical comedy “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” April 20 - May 6, 2018. Kristin Hegel is choreographer and Terri Bateman is production assistant. Show dates are April 20, 21, 27, 28, 29, May 4, 5, and 6, 2018; Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m.; Sundays at 2 p.m. The musical was based upon “C-R-EP-U-S-C-U-L-E,” an original improvisational play created by Rebecca Feldman and performed by The Farm, a New-Yorkbased improvisational comedy troupe. Finn and Sheinkin worked together with Feldman to transform “C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E” into a scripted full-length musical with additional material by Jay Reiss. In 2005 the musical was nominated for multiple Tony Awards; Rachel Sheinkin won the Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical. Internationally produced, this musical is the hilarious and compelling tale of socially awkward youngsters who find joy, heartache and purpose while competing at a regional spelling bee. “We are the slightest bit bizarre” may be quite an understatement when describing some of the enjoyably eccentric tweens competing in the spelling bee. With all the excitement, desperation, weirdness and fun one can expect from a spelling competition, these six young spellers have dreams of their heart’s desires coming true as they compete for a chance to be “the one” to participate in the National Spelling Bee. The stellar cast of zany characters includes: Meg Murphy as Rona Lisa Peretti, Norm Burnosky as Vice Principal Douglas Panch, Durell Griffin as Mitch Mahoney, Amanda Ross as Olive Ostrovsky, Pat Sutton as William Morris Barfée, Ed Young as Charlito “Chip” Tolentino, Christian Conklin as Leaf Coneybear, Gina Schwoerer as Marcy Park, and Maya Chester-Ziv as Logainne “Schwarzy” SchwartzandGrubenierre. An unusual aspect of the show is that three real audience members are invited on stage to compete in the spelling bee alongside the six young characters. During the 2005 Tony Awards, former Presidential candidate Al Sharpton competed. Another amusing aspect of the show is that the official pronouncer, usually an improv comedian, provides ridiculous usagein-a-sentence examples when asked to use words in a sentence. At some shows, adult-only audiences (over age 16) will be invited for “Parent-Teacher Conferences,” also known as “Adult Night at the Bee.” These performances are peppered with sexual references and profanity inspired by R-rated ad-libs made during rehearsals. Audience members will have the chance to participate in the (spelling) E-X-C-I-T-E-M-E-N-T! Matinée performances will be family-friendly, but evening shows are NOT recommended for children. Old Academy Players, located at 3544 Indian Queen Lane in East Falls, has provided continuous community theater since 1923, and featured the acting debuts of both Grace Kelly and Robert Prosky. Tickets are $25 each. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 p.m.; Sunday matinée performances are at 2 p.m. Parking for all performances is free. Purchase tickets online at www.oldacademyplayers.org, call 215-843-1109 for reservations, or visit www.oldacademyplayers.org for details.

“Shooting a movie is like a stagecoach trip,” says filmmaker Ferrand (portrayed by the film’s actual director, Francois Truffaut), “At first you hope for a nice ride. Then you just hope to reach your destination.” As he labors to shoot his destined-to-be-a-stinker film Meet Pamela, the production swirls with its own drama—affairs, crises, accidents, egos, and more. Named for the shooting process used by filmmakers to shoot night scenes during daylight, Day for Night is a love letter to moviemaking as a craft and a lifestyle. Having made his name as one of the founders of the French New Wave, Truffaut earned his first Oscar nomination for directing Day for Night, which took the prize for Best Foreign Language Film. Presented in collaboration with the Departments of French and Francophone Studies at Bryn Mawr College and Haverford College, the feature will be preceded by the 1981 short film “When I’m Young,” directed by Day for Night editor Yann Dedet, who will be present for a post-film Q&A. Day for Night will show on Thursday, April 19 at 7 p.m. at Bryn Mawr Film Institute. Tickets are $12.50 for general admission, $10 for seniors and students, and $6.50 for BMFI members. Tickets are available at the Box Office during operating hours or online at BrynMawrFilm.org.

One hundred percent of the proceeds from the event ticket sales, donations, and local business sponsorships went to “The Mercy Girl Effect,” which has committed to build a school in Sugu, Nigeria. Close to 250 students from MMA (and guests from area schools) participated in this event. The event included some serious fun while keeping an eye on a serious cause: educating children in need. The MMA community has been involved in “The Mercy Girl Effect,” a project combining the efforts of Mercy schools across the nation, for several years. Together, the 12-15 Mercy schools collaborate to improve the quality of life for females in developing nations with a special emphasis on girls and education. In recent years, the MMA students helped to raise money to build a library in Kenya, schools in Cambodia and South Sudan, and hut-houses for refugees in Nigeria (once the children had housing, they could get an address and were then eligible to enroll at the local school). This year, students will focus their fundraising efforts to the rebuilding a school in Sugu, Nigeria, which was bombed by Boko Haram. The school will also function as a community center for people of all nationalities and faiths to meet.

More than 100 people will celebrate Michael Herskovitz’s 90th birthday on Saturday, April 14, 2018. the United States in 1959 he lived for ten years in Israel. Michael fought in the 1948 war of Independence and the 1956 Sinai War. Arriving in the United States with a limited education and speaking no English he worked long hours acquiring a trade as an automobile mechanic and teaching himself English. Soon a representative from Gulf Oil approached Michael to purchase and run a franchise. Three gas stations, two parts stores, four shoe stores in Philadelphia and Miami later Michael established himself as a selfmade successful businessman – a shining example of the American Dream. Michael is a member of the Jewish Community Relations Council Holocaust Awareness Committee of Philadelphia, The Holocaust Awareness Museum and Education Center, and The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. Through Michael’s books and speaking engagements he has brought his life-changing story to hundreds of schools, colleges, temples and the United States Senate. President Barack Obama refers to Michael as one of our living memorials. Holocaust Survivor Michael Herskovitz says “I have searched my heart and soul for over 50 years and cannot find a shred of a lesson that we have learned from the experience, but yet, it is hard to live and not believe in something. I keep clinging to a faith hope that someday I will understand. This is a shocking and painful story, but it must be told and retold and never forgotten.”
