It depicts the story of Lank and Chelle, two African-American siblings who are struggling to make ends meet by running an after-hours “night spot” in the basement of their family home. Unexpectedly finding themselves at the epicenter of violent street disorder and racial confrontations, an improbable encounter puts them at personal risk and challenges their moral compass to make the right choices. DANCER AMY ALDRIDGE

TO

RETIRE

Salute to Working Women Luncheon

Continued from front page

“Amy is an exquisite dancer and exemplifies professionalism and what it means to be a principal dancer and a star,” said Artistic Director Angel Corella. “I’ve admired her dancing for years, but after having the privilege to work with her I can now say I admire her as a person. She will always be a big part of the history of the Company. A performance of Rubies is the perfect way for us to celebrate her dedication, love, and passion for ballet during her time at Pennsylvania Ballet.” Born in Richmond, VA, Amy began her dance training at The School of Richmond Ballet and continued with The School of American Ballet and Boston Ballet before graduating from the North Carolina School for the Arts, where she received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence. Amy joined Pennsylvania Ballet for the 1994-1995 season and quickly rose through the ranks and earned the position of Principal Dancer in 2001. She has performed principal roles in numerous works, including The Taming of the Shrew, Cinderella, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Sleeping Beauty, La Fille mal gardée, Square Dance, Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, Ballo della Regina, Theme and Variations, Tchaikovsky pas de deux, Allegro Brilliante, Stravinsky Violin Concerto, Without Words, Petite Mort, In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated, The Second Detail, and most recently, Le Corsaire. “I’ve spent 23 years of my life dedicated to this beautiful art form and it has given me so much in return,” said Aldridge. “It feels right to retire this year with Rubies; I’ve always loved dancing Balanchine and Rubies has had a lasting impact on me since I first learned it.” Rubies, the second act of Balanchine’s full-length ballet Jewels, is a clean, crisp piece which is influenced by Balanchine’s experiences in urban America. Set to a jazz-inflected score by Igor Stravinsky, Rubies portrays the fast-paced and glamourous style of New York City. Amy also created original roles for Dwight Rhoden’s 2x7, Trey McIntyre’s Cantilena, Matthew Neenan’s Keep and As It’s Going, and Jorma Elo’s Pulcinella. In May 2004, she performed as a guest artist with New York City Ballet dancing Tarantella as part of the George Balanchine Centennial Celebrations. She has also appeared with BalletX in Matthew Neenan’s Broke Apart, Elo’s Scenes View 2, and at Jacob’s Pillow in the Summer of 2006. “I feel fortunate to have gotten the opportunity to work under two amazing artistic directors and collaborate with so many talented choreographers,” said Aldridge. “My future is still full of dance, but in a different capacity. I love teaching and look forward to sharing my experience and knowledge with the next generation of dancers.”

ld Academy Players presents the hilarious “Men are Dogs” by American playwright Joe Simonelli, directed by Terri Bateman, and produced by Christopher McCollum and Michelle Moscicki. Show dates are April 21, 22, 28, 29, 30, May 5, 6, & 7, 2017. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 p.m.; Sunday matinee performances are at 2 p.m. Meet Playwright Joe Simonelli, as he’ll be part of the talk back held on Saturday, May 6 at 2 p.m. (private theatre party) and 8 p.m. (public performance). Joe Simonelli has been writing and performing in plays on the Jersey Shore, Staten Island, and Manhattan since 1998. His plays are performed around the United States and Canada on a regular basis. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was exposed to the New York theatre scene at an early age. “Men are Dogs” features Dr. Cecelia Monahan as the no nonsense therapist running a support group for single and divorced women from her home office. She listens to a number of relationship problems from her unusual circle of patients as she deals with the unsolicited advice of her live-in and loving mother on subjects ranging from dating to cooking recipes. The doctor, however, is not above using some unorthodox methods of her own such as hiring out of work actors to role-play with her patients. It is only when Cecelia meets the new substitute package delivery man that the doctor must learn to practice what she preaches! What do you get when you mix 6 women, 2 men and group therapy sessions? Just what the doctor ordered! The stellar cast of “Men are Dogs” includes: Chris Cutrufello as Rose, Christopher Wunder as Tony, Leah Lawler as Allison, Marisa Block as Jane, Michele Scutti as Cecelia, Natalie Bonacci as Loretta, Norman Burnosky as Bob, and Tiffany Brink as Madeline. You will leave the theater with laughter in your heart, and the understanding that love sees no gender or social status, and that happiness can also be yours for the taking…and giving! Old Academy Players, located at 3544 Indian Queen Lane in East Falls, has provided continuous community theater since 1923, and featured the acting debuts of both Grace Kelly and Robert Prosky. All tickets for plays are $15. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 pm; Sunday matinee performances are at 2 p.m. Run time is 2 hours. Parking for all performances is free. For reservations, call 215-843-1109 or visit www.oldacademyplayers.org for information.

O

Annual Commemoration of the Holocaust Main Line Reform Temple invites the community as the synagogue gathers together for its annual observance of “Yom HaShoah,” the commemoration of the Holocaust, Monday, April 24 at 7 p.m. Featuring the lighting of the six-branched candelabrum in memory of the Six Million by Holocaust survivors and their descendants, the service also will include a presentation by bestselling author David Kinney. Kinney’s new bestseller, “The Devil’s Diary: Alfred Rosenberg and the Stolen Secrets of the Third Reich,” co-authored by Robert K. Wittman, investigates the disappearance of a private diary penned by one of Adolf Hitler’s top aides – Alfred Rosenberg, his “chief philosopher” – and mines its long-hidden pages to deliver a fresh, eye-opening account of the Nazi rise to power and the genesis of the Holocaust. The synagogue will be joined as well by area clergy and choirs and, once again, by the Choir of the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts. A special feature will be a short vignette performed by members of the Pennsylvania Academy of Ballet. All are welcome and school-aged children are encouraged to attend. Main Line Reform Temple is located at 410 Montgomery Ave., Wynnewood. Call 610-649-7800 for information. LIKE City Suburban News on Facebook for weekly links!
