Comedian and juggler Mark Nizer comes to Upper Darby Performing Arts Center on Friday evening, April 5 at 7:30 p.m.

Presenting his “Mark Nizer, 4D” show, Nizer indulges every audience member with 3D glasses in order to experience a performance billed as “a new dimension in entertainment.” Performing a combination of original comedy, world class juggling, movement, music and technology, the multitalented Nizer promises a spellbinding evening for audience members of all ages.

DeLissio Offers Spring Shredding Events State Rep. Pamela A. DeLissio, D-Montgomery/Phila., will hold two free shredding events for constituents of the 194th Legislative District to safely dispose of confidential, unwanted documents. The next two shred events are scheduled as follows: Saturday, April 13, 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. in the parking lot behind Magisterial District Court, 925 Montgomery Ave., Narberth. Saturday, May 11, 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. in the Roxborough Municipal Lot, 514 Dupont St., Philadelphia. The events will be held rain or shine.

There is a limit of four bags per household (standard storage/banker boxes or grocery bags) and will conclude at 11 a.m. sharp. DeLissio said common types of unwanted items that should be shredded include credit card statements, credit card applications, bank and investment statements, canceled checks, income tax information, insurance and health records and retirement or pension fund information. Social Media Competition for High School Students – at Immaculata University Immaculata University is hosting a social media workshop/competition on Saturday, April 6, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Great Hall for high school students. The event, called Social Media Mashup, will include a keynote address by Tim Stoeckle, social media coordinator of the Philadelphia Phillies, and other professionals from local businesses. Participants will attend break-out sessions moderated by social media experts, and will compete in a team competition. This event, for grades 9-12, focuses on responsible and effective use of social media in the business environment. The team competition tasks groups to build a social media campaign for a generic item and present it to judges. Each member of the winning team receives a pair of Apple Airpods. The agenda for Wednesday, April 10 at the Rotunda opens with a 3:30 p.m. - 5 p.m. session called a Black Think Tank hosted by author Robert Hayes. Activist, concerned citizens, political candidates, intellectuals, citywide movers and shakers are invited to participate in this interactive and open discussion that focuses on urban problem solving. Eighth Annual Center City Jazz Festival April 27 Marc Cary Trio, Threezus and Sumi Tonooka Among Artists Celebrating City’s Jazz Legacy and Its Future he Center City Jazz Festival (CCJF) celebrates its eighth anniversary on Saturday, April 27, in an exciting multi-venue extravaganza that showcases some of today’s hottest talent.

CCJF is one of the most anticipated annual events on Philadelphia’s music calendar. Haddad King said of the work, “What makes La Giara particularly compelling is that it is my personal family story, but the themes that were the driving forces behind my family’s dissent in 1909 still resonate today. When expressed through varied music writing – Musical Theater, Opera, Jazz and Brazilian influences – a rich and unique music narrative is created.”

La Giara is performed in two acts and features 5 singers/actors and a 5-piece instrumental ensemble that includes piano (Patricia Haddad), guitar (Orlando Haddad), accordion (Joe Soprani), upright bass (Jim Stager) and mandolin (Mark Linkins).

Video projections created by Brendan McGeehan and shadow puppetry designed by Roni DeFalco will enhance and bring a visual component to the production.

Rebecca Saxe John Thomas Jr., Assistant Chief at the Narberth Fire Company, spoke to visually impaired and blind students at Overbrook School for the Blind (OSB) about being a fireman. Mr. Thomas, a Narberth resident and volunteer at the Narberth Fire Company for 40 years, talked about fire safety, how to STOP, DROP and ROLL if your clothes are on fire, and brought in his uniform and equipment so that some of OSB’s youngest visually impaired students could feel what the equipment is like. Mr. Thomas has been the Business Office Coordinator at Overbrook School for the Blind for 26 years.

The Junior Retreat day further connects the class with one another and enriches the juniors’ spiritual growth as they prepare for their final year at MMA. Ring Night caps the experience when they receive their rings as symbols of sisterhood, success, and scholarship.

True to tradition, this year’s Ring Night was held at Merion Mercy Academy. Members of the junior class celebrated with a Mass and received their rings in the Motherhouse Chapel with their parents and classmates. A reception followed Mass, and students there were fully aware of what an important milestone Ring Night is in their high school journey.

All across the country, theaters like BMFI are presenting Science on Screen programs in their own communities, sparking scientific conversations everywhere this spring. Science on Screen® is an initiative by the Coolidge Corner Theater with major support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

Science on Screen begins with the original Jurassic Park on Saturday, April 13, followed by a talk with Steven Spielberg’s dinosaur advisor on the film, “Dino” Don Lessem. The following Thursday, April 25, Dr. Frank Lee, Director of Drexel University’s Entrepreneurial Game Studio, decodes Computer Chess, an analog mockumentary set in a 1980s game programming tournament. ASL and spoken English interpretation will accompany the Deaf Short Films Program, featuring works made by and starring Deaf artists on Thursday, April 25, followed by a discussion with Melissa Draganac-Hawk, Director of Student Affairs at the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf. Over the Limit follows elite Russian gymnast Margarita Mamun’s intense path to the 2016 Olympics, which finishes the series on Thursday, May 2. Polina Kozitskiy of the Philadelphia Rhythmic Academy will perform a short demonstration prior to the film, and will be joined by Dr. Joel Fish, Director of the Center for Sport Psychology, for a talk after the screening.

Jurassic Park with “Dino” Don Lessem “Hold onto your butts!” A group of experts are summoned to a millionaire’s remote island to preview his new creation: a nature reserve populated by living dinosaurs, cloned from prehistoric DNA. When the park’s security system fails, the visitors must brave the rampaging dinosaurs to shepherd their host’s grandchildren to safety. Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum star in the 1993 blockbuster that still reigns as the dinosaur movie of all dinosaur movies. After the screening, science writer and exhibit developer “Dino” Don Lessem will help attendees separate dino-fact from fiction.

Don Lessem is one of the world’s leading presenters of dinosaurs, the author of more than 40 books, and advisor to Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park. Mr. Lessem has excavated and reconstructed the world’s largest meat-eating and plant-eating dinosaurs in Patagonia and Mongolia. He creates giant touring exhibitions, is host and creator of NOVA documentaries, and advisor to Universal Studios and Disney theme parks. The Argentine dinosaur, Lessemsaurus, was named in honor of his contributions to dinosaur research.

Computer Chess with Dr. Frank Lee In the early 1980s, a tournament between chess-playing computers leads the attending programmers to personal, spiritual, and existential crossroads. Shot on period-appropriate analog video cameras, this comic (and occasionally surreal) mockumentary lovingly spoofs the early days of computing while foreshadowing the encroachment of technology into modern life. Dr. Frank Lee, Director of Drexel University’s Entrepreneurial Game Studio, will introduce the film and stay for a post-film Q&A. Dr. Frank J. Lee is a Professor of Digital Media in the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts and Design at Drexel University with appointments in Psychology, Computer Science, and Biomedical Engineering. Lee received his Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from Carnegie Mellon University, and his B.A. in Cognitive Science from UC Berkeley. Lee co-founded Drexel’s Game Design Program in 2008, which is currently ranked as one of the Top Best Game Design Programs in U.S. He is also the founding director of the Entrepreneurial Game Studio at Drexel University, a unique university initiative designed to teach students entrepreneurship and gaming by helping them to create their own game companies. Lee’s past projects have won national and international awards and recognitions that have received extensive media coverage. The Guinness World Records recognized one of his most famous projects, Skyscraper Tetris, as the Largest Architectural Video Game Display. He was selected as one of Polygon’s 50 most admirable gaming people of 2014, and one of Philadelphia Magazine’s Top Innovators of 2012.

Melissa Draganac-Hawk, Director of Student Affairs at the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf and president of the National Association of the Deaf, will introduce the film and moderate post-screening discussion.

Melissa Draganac-Hawk is a first-generation American of deaf immigrant Peruvians, and received her Master’s degree in Linguistics and dual Bachelors in American Sign Language and Theater Production & Performance from Gallaudet University. Currently, she is the Director of Student Affairs at the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf and president of the National Association of the Deaf. Engaged in the Deaf Community, Draganac-Hawk was the president of the National Council of Hispano Deaf and Hard of Hearing (now renamed Council de Manos) and the Executive Director of Deaf Women United.

Lockett, a resident of Ardmore, has spoken out on the use of the “r-word” in schools and his community. He was nominated for the award by Joe Denelsbeck, principal at Archbishop Carroll.

Winners were invited to a celebratory breakfast at the National Constitution Center on March 20, as well as a leadership conference at Widener University this fall. Winners also receive a scholarship of $20,000 over four years if they enroll at Widener University.

“Sign” uniquely tells the story of a relationship between Ben, a hearing man, and Aaron, who is deaf. Show is Preston Sadleir. This film is part of the Deaf Short Films Program on Thursday, April 25, 2019, at 7 p.m. prepares for the 2016 Summer Olympics. Exquisitely filmed, this gripping documentary explores the extremes of elite athleticism, contrasting Mamun’s astonishing grace with the physical and psychological intensity of her training regimen. Polina Kozitskiy, coach at the Philadelphia Rhythmic Academy, will open the program with a rhythmic gymnastics demonstration. After the screening, she’ll be joined by Dr. Joel Fish, Director of the Center for Sport Psychology, for a talk and Q&A. Polina Kozitskiy is an American individual rhythmic gymnast. She represented her nation at international competitions, including at the 2011 World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships. She is now a coach at the Philadelphia Rhythmic Academy.

Dr. Joel Fish, Director of the Center for Sports Psychology, is a nationally recognized expert in sport psychology who has worked in the field for the past twenty-five years. He is a licensed psychologist who has worked extensively with athletes of all ages and skills levels, from youth sport through the Olympic and professional ranks. Dr. Fish has been a sport psychology consultant for the Philadelphia 76ers, the Philadelphia Flyers, the Philadelphia Phillies Organization, the USA Women’s National Field Hockey Team, and the USA Women’s National Soccer Team. He is one of the only sport psychologists in the country who has worked with three professional sports teams in the same city at the same time. Dr. Fish has also served as a sport psychology consultant for Saint Joseph’s University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Temple University. Dr. Fish is a visiting lecturer at the Wingate Institute and Zinman College in Netanya, Israel, where he teaches about applied sport psychology and elite athletes. He has spoken nationwide on sport psychology at over 300 universities and is a popular presenter at a variety of athletic functions.

“Dealer’s Choice” at the Players Club of Swarthmore

Photo/Rebecca Gudelunas Photography he Players Club of Swarthmore presents “Dealer’s Choice,” a comedy by Patrick Marber, directed by Jeff Berry, on the Raymond W. Smith stage. Performances are April 5 and 6 at 8 p.m., April 7 at 2 p.m., April 11 at 7:30 p.m., April 12 and 13 at 8 p.m. Admission is $10 at the door, or in advance at www.pcstheater.org. The Players Club is located at 614 Fairview Road in Swarthmore, PA. “Dealer’s Choice” is set in a blue-collar neighborhood in London, in a restaurant where the weekly poker game is about to occur. In the second act, the scene moves to the basement and the poker game begins. Poker, it’s clear, is the way the winning players exercise their dominance over the lesser members of the band, and the arena where the losers try, and fail hilariously, to move up a peg in the esteem of the group. That one of the losers is the son of one of the winners adds depth to the drama, and the visit of a quiet man who asks to sit in on the game upends the expectations of all the players in this wickedly funny comedy.

The cast includes Stephen Connor of Wilmington, Steve Gudelunas of Philadelphia, Walter McCready of Chester, Sean McDermott of Phoenixville, Christopher Tolomeo of Springfield, and Steve Travers of Prospect Park.

A team of international talent performs the eclectic and jazz-infused music of Philadelphia composer & pianist Curt Cacioppo. Registration Open for 18th Annual Elizabeth Ciunci Foundation Butterfly Run Registration is now open for the 18th Annual Elizabeth Ciunci Foundation Butterfly Run, which supports scholarships for students pursuing degrees in early childhood education. The foundation was established in honor of 19 year-old Elizabeth Ciunci, a Great Valley High School student tragically killed in 1999 by a drunk driver on the Schuylkill Expressway. Funds raised by the foundation support an endowment at Delaware County Community College, scholarships for local area high school seniors, raise awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving, and sponsor community organizations that aid children struggling with learning disabilities – a passion of Elizabeth’s. This year’s event will include a 5k run/walk and a 1 Mile “Fun Walk” and Easter Egg Hung on Saturday, April 20, 2019.
