The Devon Horse Show & Country Fair Opens May 23 he Wells Fargo Stagecoach will be exhibited at the Devon Horse Show on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 30 through June 1. Wells Fargo is the official presenting sponsor of the annual event to be held May 23 to June 2, 2013 at the show grounds in Devon. Wells Fargo will also serve as the title sponsor of the premier class, the $100,000 Wells Fargo Grand Prix of Devon to be held Thursday, May 30. This marks Wells Fargo’s third year as presenting sponsor of the show. The event benefits Bryn Mawr Hospital, with proceeds to the Hospital approaching $15 million. John Payne and his One Arm Bandit & Company, from Shindler, Okla., will appear the last four full days of the show in the evening, from May 29 to June 1. The One Arm Bandit show won the Professional Rodeo Circuit’s Specialty Act of the Year from 1989 through

1996 and again from 2008 through 2011. Payne lost his right arm after an accident in 1973. Payne began in rodeos in 1987 and built up his act with longhorn Watusi steers, mustangs, mules and buffalo. Black Mouth Cur dogs are a very intrical part of the training process. Payne is assisted in his act by his wife Judy, and when his son Lynn and daughter Amanda each turned 18, they also joined the show. “It is very fulfilling to have Lynn and Amanda display their talents,” said Payne. “They are truly my right hand. An innovative event, the Five-Gaited Special Class will be held on Wednesday evening, May 29. Some of the world’s top jumper riders, including Olympian McLain Ward, will test their skills and compete on Five-Gaited Saddlebreds at Devon. Each jumper rider will have a practice session and then show the horse in the class, each going for that first place prize. Horses will be provided by Saddlebred owners and might very well be the first of its kind. The Country Fair is open days and evenings throughout the 11 days, with a wide variety of foods, boutique shopping and rides and games. he Democratic Committee of Lower Merion and Narberth is advising local Democrats to identify and vote for endorsed Montgomery County Democratic judicial candidates Gail A. Weilheimer, 42, of Abington, and Steven C. Tolliver, 57, of Cheltenham. “The county judicial primary is extremely important this year,” stated Joe Foster, chair of the Lower Merion and Narberth Democratic Committee. “Because the state allows judicial candidates to file in both party’s primaries, Democratic voters need to come out and vote for Weilheimer and Tolliver—the only true Democrats in a judicial ballot that will include several Republican names.” The ballot, according to Foster will not identify the judicial candidates’ party affiliation, so local party committee people and volunteers will be at the polls to help voters with ballot information. Since there are no contested primaries for other local elections, party leaders are concerned a light turnout might allow nonendorsed judicial candidates to slip through the primary process. Local endorsed Democrats that are run-

The Merion Concert Band will play the U. S. Military service songs and patriotic selections beginning at 9:45 a.m. at the corner of Lancaster and Argyle Roads. Parade participants are to assemble on Greenfield Avenue at 10 a.m. Families and children are welcome with their bicycles, strollers and wagons. First, second and third place awards will be given for the best decorated bicycles. The parade will step off from Greenfield Avenue at 10:30 a.m. and process to St. Paul’s Cemetery for the Ceremonial Memorial Day Service at 11:15 a.m. Eileen Rooney Trainer, retired township secretary, will serve as this year’s Grand Marshal in recognition of her many years of service to the community. Azar Lawrence in a Rare Philadelphia Appearance at the Philadelphia Ethical Society n Saturday, May 18, 2013, at 7:30 p.m., the ProducersGuild presents saxophonist, Azar Lawrence, along with his East Coast band members: pianist Benito Gonzalez; bassist Essiet Essiet; and drummer Gerry Gibbs, at the Philadelphia Ethical Society, 1906 Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia, PA. It is a rare occurrence that Philadelphia jazz lovers have the opportunity to hear a live performance by this renowned jazz saxophonist in their own city. At age 17 Lawrence began garnering respect from the masters of the modern jazz world. His creative ability and mastery of the saxophone (alto, soprano, and tenor) had the depth of skill usually demonstrated by well-seasoned, older musicians. He had revered jazz men like Elvin Jones and McCoy Tyner comparing his approach to the sax as the same as that of John Coltrane; and jazz luminary Terry Clark hiring him to be part of his group when they toured Europe in 1970. Aging seemed to only have made Lawrence’s talent expand. By the time he had turned 25, in the mid 70’s, he had been a sideman with the likes of Woody Shaw, Elvin Jones, Freddie Hubbart, McCoy Tyner, and Miles Davis; performed with Davis at Carnegie Hall were “Dark Magus” was recorded live; and released his own three acclaimed albums that became chart burners: “Bridge into New Age,” 1974; “Summer

The 1980’s began the time when he expand his musical talents outside of the conventional jazz world as mainly a horn man, and the “renaissance man” of his musical genius self exploded on to the scene. During this time he seemed to be trying to bring the jazz sound into popular music. His musical world now included performing on additional instruments, more composing and arranging for artists of various genres, such as Frank Zappa, Ike and Tina Turner, Roberta Flack, Earth, Wind and Fire, and Natalie Cole; and the merging with the psychedelic jazz fusion sounds. You can hear his sound in Busta Rhyms’ video, “In the Ghetto”; and on the Stanley Turentine’s “Coming Home” recording; he has credits on Marvin Gaye’s award winning album, “Hear My Dear”; and he wrote over 20 songs on various artist projects. His band, Chameleon, recorded for Electra Records—where Patrice Banks, Chocolate, of Grande Central Station was a member of the group. After what seemed to be a 20 year sabbatical from performing live and recording his own studio works Lawrence now has exploded back on to the scene with a vengeance. He has been performing on both the East and West coasts, as well recording many new compositions. His latest contributions have been: “Speak the Word” and “Home Cookin’,” in 2009; and the next year “Music of John Coltrane,” “Prayers for My Ancestors,” and “Mystic Journey” which received several Best of 2010; in 2011 he co-produced a CD with Seth Abramson, the Grammy Ward Winner and the Artistic Director for Jazz Standard in New York. His 2013 contribution so far, besides live performances around the country, is a new CD “The Seeker –Live at the Jazz Standard,” that will hit the stores by this June 2013. Billed as the “Children Helping Children Perform-A-Thon” because the event is geared toward young performers, the studio of Ms. Lew Harder had an unusual participant in 2013. Rabbi Marc Israel will assume the position of Associate Rabbi, and Judith Scarani will be the new Director of the synagogue’s Early Childhood Center. Rabbi Marc Israel has been the Rabbi Educator – Director of Education and Congregational Programming at Ohr Kodesh Congregation in Chevy Chase, Maryland, for the past eight years. Rabbi Israel, an innovative and talented educator, is recognized for creating quality programming across the generations. His outgoing personality will serve him well as he builds relationships and connections in the congregation. As the Associate Rabbi at TBH-BE, Rabbi Israel will be the director of the Religious School. In addition, he will be involved in all aspects of congregational life, by joining Rabbi Cooper through participation in the organization’s lifecycle events, minyanim, services and programs. The synagogue looks forward to Rabbi Israel’s boundless energy, passion for Judaism, and commitment to children and families. Both Rabbi Israel and Ms. Scarani will assume their respective responsibilities at the synagogue on July 1. Openings Still Available in Upper Darby Summer Stage pper Darby Summer Stage is an award-winning theater arts program that has introduced thousands of young people to live theater performance since the program was established by Executive Director Harry Dietzler 37 years ago in 1976. Openings are still available in the Apprentice Program (ages 11 to 12). Classes are offered in acting, movement, music and storytelling from 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. Two sessions are offered: June 27 - July 19 (no classes on July 4 or 5) or July 22 - August 9. Openings are also available in the Rising Stars Program (ages 12 to 13). Students learn the fundamentals of musical theater and have the opportunity to perform for family at the end of the 3-week session. Classes are offered from 1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Dates for Session Two are July 22 through August 9. Limited spaces are available in the Children’s Theater Program (ages 14 to 17). Students learn more extensive musical theater skills and perform for a children’s theater audience. Participants must be available from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday. The annual Perform-A-Thon offers a once in a lifetime opportunity for musicians to pledge donations for the privilege to play on a rare Steinway concert grand piano at the CBS 3 Studios in downtown Philadelphia. While supporting an important local cause, the project encourages children to practice and develops a sense of civic participation and community service in young people from an early age. he Temple University Hospital Auxiliary hosted the 2013 “Acres of Diamonds” Gala on Saturday, April 20 at 6 p.m. at Vie Ballroom, 600 North Broad Street, Philadelphia. This year’s event, emceed by 6ABC news anchor Sarah Bloomquist, honored one of the country’s top pulmonary centers, The Temple Lung Center. The 2013 Diamond Award was accepted on behalf of the Lung Center by Dr. Gerard J. Criner, Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine at Temple University School of Medicine; Director Attending the 2013 “Acres of Diamonds” Gala on April 20 are, of the Division of Pulmonary from left – Gerard Criner, MD, Director of the Temple Lung and Critical Care Medicine at Center; Kal Rudman, Kal & Lucille Rudman Foundation; Sarah Temple University Hospital; Bloomquist, Emcee, WPVI ABC 6 News Anchor; Larry Kaiser, and, Director of The Temple MD, FACS, President & CEO, Temple Health. Lung Center. The Temple Lung Center is a national leader in patient care, research and education, and is the destination of choice for patients with serious lung disease in the greater Philadelphia area. The team at The Temple Lung Center recently saved the life of one of the evening’s major supporters, Lucille Rudman, after another local hospital had reached an impasse in her treatment. In grateful thanks, the Kal and Lucille Rudman Foundation, already major supporters of The Temple Lung Center, made a substantial contribution toward the Gala. “The Diamond Award recognizes individuals for their social responsibility to the human family at large and the Temple family in particular,” said Dr. Robert McNamara, Chair of Emergency Medicine at Temple University School Lucille and Kal Rudman, of Kal & Lucille Rudman Foundation. of Medicine. “Temple’s Lung Center provides diagnosis, treatment and care in a state-of-the art facility staffed by dedicated physicians, surgeons, nurses, and other specialists. This year’s special class includes one of the most successful coaches in basketball history, one of the winningest football coaches in Philadelphia high school history, a top radio broadcast manager and more: Ellen Barkann, a competitive figure skater, achieved the highest level in all disciplines of her sport: singles, pairs and ice dancing. In 2012 she created a nonprofit, The Barkann Family Healing Hearts Foundation, whose mission is to provide grants and financial assistance to families in the area who are overcome by family crisis, long term illness or sudden loss of life. Bob Brooks was a multi-talented athlete as the starting pitcher on the University of Pennsylvania’s baseball team and a three-year starter on the basketball court who earned AllIvy and All-State honors his senior year. He is a longtime community volunteer. Larry Brown is one of the most successful basketball coaches, college or pro, of all time. He is the only head coach to lead teams to an NBA title (Detroit 2004) and an NCAA Championship (Kansas 1988). He is also the only coach in history to lead eight different NBA teams to the playoffs. He also is the only U.S. male to both play and coach in the Olympics, winning Gold Medals in 1964 and 2000 and is enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. He is currently the head basketball coach at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Fred Cohen achieved a stellar basketball career in high school and the upper levels of the college game. Playing for the Temple Owls, he set an NCAA playoff record for rebounds that remains intact: 34! He played with All-Americans Hal Lear and Guy Rogers; their 1956 team went to the NCAA Final Four. He went on to graduate Yale Law School and has had a distinguished law career as a professor then activist and author in the area of correctional mental health law. Josh Cohen ranked among the top ten tennis players in the world in U.S. Juniors and number one nationally in every USTA age group from 12-18; he won the International Grass Court Championship and competed in all four Grand Slams and reached the quarterfinals in the French Open. In 2012, Billie Jean King named him head coach of her team, the Philadelphia Freedoms. Ron Cohen has been the head football coach at George Washington High School for the past 28 years and is the winningest coach in Philadelphia City history. He has been named Coach of the Year on nine different occasions. He holds the city record for most playoff wins with 55 and has coached seven Big 33 football stars, including four players who have gone on to play in the NFL. Bonnie Kay has been a Philadelphia area competitor in golf tournaments for over 40 years, having won the Women’s Stroke Play Championship and the Mixed Pair Championship as well as various country club championships. As a proud player in two Maccabi Games® in Israel, she won a team Silver in 1985 and a team Gold in 1997. She is a consulting psychologist to Fortune 500 corporations, city and state agencies and private family owned companies. Marc Rayfield is senior vice president and market manager of CBS, Inc. where he is currently responsible for live broadcasts of the Phillies, Eagles and Philadelphia Union as well as Temple, St. Joe’s and Villanova athletics. His purview at CBS includes oversight of KYW Newsradio, WIP, WOGL, WPHT and cbsphilly.com. Pillar of Achievement honoree, Jed Margolis has been dedicated to using sports to strengthen Jewish identity and pride and love for Israel throughout his 40 years working in the JCC World and at Maccabi USA where he has served as executive director since 2002. One of the many highpoints in his Maccabi USA tenure came in 2009 when he was honored as a member of the Maccabi USA Leadership Team by The National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. He also represented the USA as a member of the Masters Men’s Gold Medal Basketball Team, coached by NBA Legend Dolph Schayes, at the 1995 Pan Am Maccabi Games® in Uruguay. The mission of the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of Fame is to provide the community with tangible and lasting evidence of the past, present and future of Jewish sportsmen and sportswomen in the Greater Philadelphia area and to instill community pride in Jewish accomplishments in the field of sports and the role sports has played in preserving Jewish culture. LGBT Elder Initiative to Present Older Women’s Health Workshop ay is Older Americans Month. The LGBT Elder Initiative (LGBTEI) is bringing to light the many obstacles to health and wellness that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older women face. Limited access to care, discrimination, stigma and fear all combine to negatively impact the ability of LGBT older women to age successfully. To address these issues and provide information and resources to the community, the LGBTEI will present, “LGBT Older Women’s Health” on Saturday, May 18, 2013. Part of the LGBTEI CONVERSATIONS series of informational programs, “LGBT Older Women’s Health” will address healthy aging and techniques for achieving and maintaining wellness and gaining greater access to care. This program will be presented at the South Philadelphia Older Adult Center, 1430 East Passyunk Avenue in Philadelphia, PA, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. The program will include a review of the free preventative care screenings provided for in the Affordable Care Act and a discussion of how best to advocate for yourself in the health care and aging services networks. Attendees will also learn how to prepare healthy snacks and will have the opportunity to try Tai Chi, the ancient Chinese system of mind-body-spirit health. LGBT older women have faced lifetimes of stigma and discrimination. As a result, they face health risks including obesity, smoking and alcohol and drug abuse. A significant percentage of women in this population do not receive regular screening for sexually transmitted infections (STI) or PAP smears. This latter issue is particularly troubling because women in this age group are at highest risk for cervical, uterine and ovarian cancers. “LGBT Older Women’s Health” will give attendees an opportunity to discuss common issues of concern, learn about competent and culturally sensitive resources, meet new people, and network within the community. The LGBTEI, which is headquartered in Philadelphia, PA, fosters and advocates for services and resources that are competent, culturally sensitive, inclusive and responsive to the needs of LGBT older adults. This program is possible due to the support of Philadelphia Gay News, PNC BANK and Philadelphia Corporation for Aging. There is no fee for this program, which is open to the public. Continuing 150 Years of Artistic Excellence ontgomery County Community College is hosting a special art exhibition May 22 - June 20 featuring the Philadelphia Sketch Club (PSC): Continuing 150 Years of Artistic Excellence at the College’s Fine Arts Center, Central Campus, 340 DeKalb Pike, Blue Bell. A “Meet the Artists” reception will be held Wednesday, June 5, from 5 to 7 p.m. Both the exhibit and artists’ reception are free of charge and open to the public. Approximately 100 pieces of art, representing PSC’s membership of more than 200 professional and non-professional artists, will be displayed through a diversity of mediums, from watercolors, oils and mixed media to photography and sculpture. PSC, located at 235 S. Camac St., Philadelphia, provides a meeting place for artists where they can share ideas and net“Pot Heads” by Betz Green, oil on board. work with fellow artists. Founded in 1860, PSC is one of America’s oldest clubs for artists. Its membership list includes American masters such as Thomas Eakins and Thomas Pollock Anshutz.
