I went to an Amish farm, a high school football game in East Texas, the U.S. Senate, a community of really Orthodox Jews in New York State, a Santeria get-together in South Florida, and downtown Cleveland.”

Main Line Art Center staff and board are joined with representatives from general contractor W. S. Cumby and James Bradberry Architects for a ceremonial groundbreaking photo. nder blue skies on Wednesday, June 5, friends of Main Line Art Center, including staff, board, students, faculty, vendors, and local politicians, gathered on the porch of the historical white house on Panmure Road in Haverford to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Center’s renovation and expansion project. Plans for the project began during the Art Center’s 75th anniversary under the leadership of now retired Executive Director Judy Herman. Highlights of the project include creating new painting and jewelry studios, making the front door to the galleries our new main entrance, bringing natural light into the ceramics studio, and developing a digital media program. During the ceremony, Executive Director Amie Postic and Board President Elaine Lisle declared that the Art Center will remain quite busy during the construction period, despite the main building being closed until November. The Art Center’s popular summer camp is being held at The Shipley School, summer adult and teen programs are at The Haverford School, the Center has planned exhibitions throughout the community, in locations such as Bryn Mawr Hospital and Ludington Library. Fall programs will also be held in locations throughout the community. In her speech, Postic thanked everyone who donated to the project, especially lead donors, The Karen and Herbert Lotman Foundation, and urged those who haven’t donated yet to too join in the transformation by donating today. In his remarks, Lower Merion Commissioner Scott Zelov also commented on the importance of supporting community institutions like Main Line Art Center that make our community a vibrant place to live. Throughout the ceremony, guests made their mark on the momentous occasion through a collaborative art project where they dipped their hands in paint and created prints using construction paper. The prints will be woven together to form a ribbon that will be incorporated into grand re-opening events scheduled for November. For more about Main Line Art Center’s renovation and expansion project, or any of its programs, visit www.mainlineart.org or call 610-525-0272.

Woody Allen’s “Play It Again, Sam” at The Stagecrafters he Stagecrafters theater wraps up its 2012-2013 season with the production of Woody Allen’s zany surreal comedy, Play It Again, Sam, which opens on Friday, June 14. As the play opens we see Allan Felix, just dumped by his wife and desperate to connect with another woman. Problem is, as he struggles to find a partner in love, his neuroses, awkwardness, and insecurity with the opposite sex keep getting in the way. A movie buff and professional film critic, Allan has this thing about Humphrey Bogart, embodiment of machismo, epitome of cool ... so he tries to tap into some of Bogart’s technique. As Allan muddles through real-life setups and failed dates, Bogey comes to his rescue – lurking in the shadows offering helpful pointers, zingers, words of wisdom, and ... hope. Woody Allen (b. Allan Stewart Konigsberg, 1935) has enjoyed renown for over five decades as consummate comedic satirist, playwright, and cinematic auteur. During his career as writer and performer, he has created upwards of forty feature films, which have collectively garnered multiple awards and distinctions in this countr y and abroad. Through his early work Allen perfected the neurotic, angst-

ridden, fretful intellectual persona that has become his trademark. Play It Again, Sam opened in New York on February 12, 1969, featuring Allen himself, along with Diane Keaton and Tony Roberts, and it ran for 453 performances. The three performers reprised their roles in the movie version in 1972. A hit on stages on both sides of the Atlantic, Play It Again, Sam has enjoyed numerous revivals in the U.S., Great Britain and elsewhere over the decades. Performance dates are June 14, 15, 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29 at 8 p.m., June 16, 23, 30 at 2 p.m. Tickets are priced at $17 Online. (Thu. eve performances “2 for $25”). Students with valid ID $13 At-door. Groups of 15 or more are offered a reduced rate of $15 a ticket, paid in advance. The box office opens 45 minutes before each performance. Students Use STEM Projects to Study Solar Energy

IT’S NOT TOO LATE...

Is your bright student struggling in school? It’s not too late to make a change for the better. DVFS solar car race winners Alex Kahn ’17, Edward Lewis ’17, and Joseph Rybas ’17 with Head of School Pritchard Garrett.

BASED LEARNING DIFFERENCES

s part of this year’s middle school science unit on stars, students at the Delaware Valley Friends School created interdisciplinary STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Solar car racers Jordan Donaghy ’18, Jordan Tunnell ’17 and Math) projects using the concept of solar energy. Anat Fergeler ’17 face off in one of the preliminary heats. During the winter, students constructed passive solar house models using a variety of materials including cardboard, foam board, plywood, and metal, and different insulation techniques. Students placed their houses outside for an entire school day, periodically recording temperature data from inside and outside their homes, with results illustrating which construction methods and materials were best at reaching and maintaining a temperature inside the homes of 20-30 degrees Celsius or 68-85 degrees Fahrenheit. This spring, students built model solar cars using small solar panels to generate electricity, and documented their engineering and creation process using wiki sites. Wiki sites are a type of website that allows groups to collectively edit and develop web pages and documents. On May 29, 2013, the middle school held a DVFS Solar Car Race where teams raced against each other on a constructed track made for the event. Car #4, created by the design team of Alex Kahn, Edward Lewis and Joseph Rybas, won the final round of races. STEM projects, such as the one developed at Delaware Valley Friends, help students develop critical 21st century skills. “When you integrate science, math and technology skills and concepts into handsClaire Redfern ’19 prepares to take a temperature reading on, collaborative projects, from her solar house. students learn problem-solving, innovation, and creativity – and have a great time doing it. Not only are we preparing them for the careers of tomorrow, but more effectively engaging them as students today,” commented DVFS science teacher Joy Paul, who developed and led the students through this unit. Ms. Paul recently presented at the NSTA (National Science Teacher’s Association) STEM conference in St. Louis in May 2013. Her presentation was on STEM activities and tools for students with learning differences. Delaware Valley Friends School is a coed, independent, college preparatory day school located in Paoli, PA.

Paintings at SJU Gallery Deconstruct Disasters

“Boat,” India ink on paper, 2009, by Melissa Wilkinson. umble,” the summer exhibit at Saint Joseph’s University Gallery, will feature Melissa Wilkinson’s meditative paintings in black, white and gray that deconstruct the effect of natural and man-made disasters on homes, businesses and communities. The collection of 12 India ink paintings on paper will be on display Monday, June 17 through Friday, August 2. “The creation of these paintings came out of anxiety,” says Wilkinson. “After Hurricane Katrina, with a tumultuous political system in place and ever-increasing concerns about the global economy, I started to create digital collages incorporating structures familiar to us in the West. Painting them seemed a slow meditation in which I could create beauty while separating my fears from reality.” Wilkinson creates her work from found photographs of devastated structures that she first manipulates digitally. She then draws or paints the images of destruction and mayhem, choosing “moments of reprieve; quiet moments following a climax, where one can assess the physical and emotional damage created by cataclysmic events,” Wilkinson says. Situating the paintings “somewhere in between abstrac-

“R

tion and representation,” Wilkinson says her work supports traditional notions of the “sublime landscape” that is uncontrollably vast and frightening, within a contemporary context of anxiety and fear. “I’m interested in navigating the viewer through a moment of both dread and wonder,” she adds. “Wilkinson deconstructs, then reassembles images to create hauntingly beautiful paintings,” says Associate Gallery Director Jeanne Bracy. “This series is especially appropriate now, when we have been plagued by so many natural disasters. The unframed exhibit hung by bullclips counterbalances any idea of it being refined. Viewers are urged to look beyond the fine lines to feel the anxious emotion present in each piece.” An assistant professor of art (painting) at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Wilkinson received an M.F.A. in painting from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. The recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, she has exhibited nationally and internationally, and her work is held in both public and private collections. Saint Joseph’s Univer“Rumble,” the summer exhibit at Saint Joseph’s University Gallery, sity Gallery is located in Merion Hall on the will feature Melissa Wilkinson’s James J. M M 2 M O D E R N D A N C E C O M PA N Y O F P H I L A D E L P H I A T O P E R F O R M I N I TA LY T H I S S U M M E R uring the month of July, the nine members of Philadelphia based MM2 Modern Dance Company will be traveling to Florence, Arezzo and Venice, Italy to present their latest dance work, THREE. Under a $30,000 grant through the WHW Foundation, the group will have the opportunity to present current work, develop site specific pieces and take classes with local companies and artists. THREE is a collection of short stories, if you will, with dances that are no more than three minutes in length. The structure of the dance company is such that there is no single choreographer, rather each dancer is charged with setting work on their fellow company members. A total of eighteen new dance pieces have been developed over the past six months by the nine company members for Dancers, from left – Jenna Faye Eugenides, Jessica Bryan presentation while on their tour. and Brianne Scott. Photo/Bill Hebert Florence is one of Italy’s most important arts centers and the capital of Tuscany. Performing arts make up the very identity of Florence, from the historical influences of Paganini to the hundreds of dance, theater, and music groups that thrive there today. Philadelphia and Florence have long been “Sister Cities,” with a relationship dating back to 1966. Philadelphia’s Mayor Nutter, recently spent five days in Florence with a delegation from the U. S. Conference of Mayors and an organization of Italian counterparts for discussions on the creative economy. MM2 dancers will have an extremely busy schedule during their trip, starting with classes each morning with choreographer and master instructor, Massimiliano Terranova at the famed Max Ballet of Florence. MM2 will be staging their own performance of THREE for the public at Spazioseme, a creative arts space in the town of Arezzo. The group will also be collaborating on new work with dancers from Italy as part of the Arezzo Wave Festival and Italy Contact Fest. Featured will be “dance in urban spaces,” in which MM2 dancers with their international counterparts perform in the area train stations and on the trains themselves for festival goers. Besides taking in as much art and culture as possible in Florence, MM2 will also be making excursions to Venice and the Tuscany countryside, where they will create and capture on film site-specific improvisational movement. The goal is to then make these pieces available online through social media for everyone to share in the experience. This is not the first international collaboration on film for MM2. The dancers, had at the end of last year, been contacted by a band out of Milan, Italy that had shared their namesake – “MM2 The Band,” to work on a music video featuring the two cities. The final video was released earlier this year on social media and to IMZ Dance Screen. This season’s dancers/choreographers for THREE are: Jessica Bryan, Katelyn Capato, Jenna Faye Eugenides, Heather Fleischman, Angela Frezzo, Kaylee Goodwin, Jennifer Laucella, Brianne Scott and Matthew Varvar. One can follow the travels and performances of this group at www.mm2dance.org as well as see them upon their return to the states when they premiere THREE as part of the FringeArts Festival in September.

He was the featured speaker at GPSEG’s Regional Business Outlook event held at the Four Seasons in Philadelphia. Known as one of the investment industry’s “Giants of the 20th Century,” Bogle shared his insights on market trends, how investing has changed in the last 60 years and the changes in the mutual fund industry. In a speech entitled “How Wall Street failed Main Street,” Bogle chronicled the mutual fund industry and the massive shift in the culture of the financial sector. “John Bogle gave our audience great information on investing and shared his wisdom from six decades as a leader in the global financial industry,” said Rip Tilden, Chairman of GPSEG’s Board of Directors. “We had a rare opportunity to hear from a pioneer whose perspective on investment strategy and leadership was valuable for our members who are entrepreneurs and business leaders themselves.” Upon graduation from Princeton, Bogle went to work for Wellington Management, a firm he eventually ran as its senior executive. In 1974, he founded The Vanguard Group, which he led until 1996. He currently serves as President of the Bogle Financial Markets Research Center. Poor Richard’s Opera Presents Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream June 21 & 22 A Season of Shakespeare Ends on a Magical Note hat do you get when you mix a love quadrilateral, a talentless acting troupe, and a fairy domestic dispute? Magic and dream worlds collide in a concert production of Britten’s delightful opera based on Shakespeare’s most beloved comedy. Following on the success of its 2012-2013 productions of Falstaff and Romeos and their Juliets, Poor Richard’s Opera presents the last installment of its Season of Shakespeare – Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Both immortal and mortal alike are ensnared in an argument between the king and the queen of the fairies. On a night when the supernatural can mingle with the natural, the line between what is and isn’t real becomes blurred for a group of hapless actors and four starcrossed lovers. Britten’s expanded tonality and lush musical textures create the perfect backdrop for this madcap adventure in an enchanted forest. Poor Richard’s Opera’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream features up-and-coming Philadelphia singers in a semi-staged concert version. Performances will be held June 21 and 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the Trinity Memorial Church, 2212 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, PA. Musical Director Ting-Ting Wong is currently the accompanist at Temple University for the Women’s Chorus and Philadelphia University Singers. Ms. Wong serves as a staff accompanist for ConcertOpera Philadelphia and Apprentice Coach for the Young Artist program with Center City Opera Theater. She was recently a resident artist with Opera Theater Pittsburgh, assisting the productions for Carmen and Candide. She also premiered Eric Moe’s Walkyrie suite. Wong’s other recent collaborations include Center City Opera Theater’s Il Postino (East Coast Premiere) and Slaying the Dragon (World Premiere), Delaware Valley Opera Company’s Hansel and Gretel, Opera NJ’s The Magic Flute, and Poor Richard’s Opera’s Falstaff and An Opera a Day series. Poor Richard’s Opera is one of Philadelphia’s newest opera companies, dedicated to giving young opera singers a chance to perform old works, new works, and everything in between. The company, founded by Sydney de Lapeyrouse and Katy Gentry in 2010, provides a supportive and challenging environment for singers who are eager to perform. Fondly referred to as “grassroots opera,” Poor Richard’s Opera simplifies the production experience to focus solely on the singers and music, usually performing in more intimate spaces and with piano accompaniment.

PUT YOUR BUSINESS IN THE NEWS!

n behalf of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, Jeffrey Brillhart, Fine Arts Director, happily presented a check for $25,658 to Bryan Miller, founder of Heeding God’s Call, on June 2. The check, representing proceeds from the church’s 2-day “Jazz Fest for Peace,” festival on May 4-5, will support Heeding God’s Call in its efforts to prevent gun violence. The faith-based movement will use the funds to reach new supporters, distribute educational materials into Delaware Valley communities, fund public events throughout the area, and obtain professional assistance in spreading the organization’s campaign throughout the city and suburbs where gun shops are located.
