“Dinosaurs Around the World” takes you on a dinosaur adventure and tour of an Earth very different from today. On view June 30, 2019 - January 20, 2020. Photo/Imagine Exhibitions we know them existed, when lush landscapes covered Africa and greenery was the norm in Antarctica. With advanced animatronics, a multi-layered narrative, fossils, authentic casts, cutting-edge research, and immersive design elements, visitors will experience the Age of Reptiles as it comes to life. Dinosaurs Around the World invites young and old to grab their prehistoric passport to Pangea and discover how plate tectonics, land bridges and volcanic activity allowed dinosaurs to disperse to all corners of the globe, giving each of the seven continents its own unique selection of these giant reptiles. During their 172-million-year reign, dinosaurs adapted into a variety of forms due to the conditions of the areas in which they lived. The exhibit includes more than a dozen examples, such as the mighty T. rex of North America, the swift Velociraptor of the Gobi Desert, the massive herbivore Amargasaurus from the tropical jungles of South America and more. “The size and realism of the moving dinosaurs and the settings really transport you back in time,” said the Academy’s Senior Exhibits Director Jennifer Sontchi. “It’s a playful and an educational experience for visitors of all ages.” In addition to advanced animatronics, Dinosaurs Around the World invites visitors on an exciting expedition from the ferocious plains of Africa and the tropical beaches of Antarctica, to the inland seas of North America and the polar darkness of Australia. Visitors will learn how continental drift, sea level fluctuations and volcanic activity allowed dinosaurs to disperse to all corners of the globe. They will also: Learn about paleontological research; Touch fossil casts; Discover and name their own dinosaur; Investigate what dinosaurs may have looked like in life; Learn how to find modern-day dinosaurs right in their own backyard. Dinosaurs Around the World, created by Imagine Exhibitions, will be on view through January 20, 2020. Dinosaur paleontologist Gregory M. Erickson, PhD, is the senior scientific advisor for the exhibit. Erickson is the curator for the Florida State University Museum and holds research appointments with the American Museum of Natural History in New York, The Field Museum in Chicago, and University of Alaska’s Museum of the North in Fairbanks. Philadelphia Boys Choir & Chorale to Premiere New ‘Pocket Opera’ P

hiladelphia Boys Choir & Chorale Artistic Director, Jeffrey Smith announces the organization’s Concert on June 23, 2019 at Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. Of note, this concert will be the premiere of a new “pocket opera” by acclaimed composer, Daniel Bernard Roumain. Roumain’s new work was inspired by a trip he took with members of the Boys Choir to visit Philadelphia’s St. Gabriel’s Hall where they met boys that were court mandated to residential treatment. The two groups of kids under 16 discussed their different experiences growing up in Philadelphia. The piece that arose from those conversations earned its name, Cipher, because it reminded Roumain of a rap style that includes two or more rappers freestyling together. “The juxtaposition in these boys’ backgrounds blended into the conversation as they bonded over similarities in their interests and studies,” describes Roumain. “I wanted to capture that dynamic, and also the personality of this city since it has such a great influence on what it means to grow up here, for those that have privileges and for others held in a grip of inequity and loss. This piece is for all of our boys in Philadelphia, the ones on this stage, and the ones who could be.” The theme of growing up resonated with Smith as well, which led to the concert’s theme for the year, …Then I Got Older. In addition to the Roumain piece, the Choir’s program will feature well-known favorite songs, like Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen and The Gift to Be Simple. “Putting together the repertoire for our Concert is a fun process every year because we select a theme that’s specifically meaningful to our mission as a choir, educating the boys in music and life,” notes Smith. “We’re thrilled to be working with DBR [Daniel Bernard Roumainagain] to premiere more of his work on this topic, especially because of how he weaves modern themes and music into more traditional musical styles.” For information on the Philadelphia Boys Choir & Chorale, email info@phillyboyschoir.org or call 215-222-3500.

Merion Mercy Academy’s Lightweight 4+ prevail, earning gold and establishing this MMA’s Lightweight 4+ as the fastest boat in this category in the country, at the 2019 USRowing Youth National Championships. oach Mike Brown knew he had something special in Merion Mercy Academy’s Lightweight 4+, as they had already won national gold medals at the Stotesbury Cup and SRAA National Scholastic regattas with a seasoned crew of seniors Izzie Begley, Taylor Gregitis, Erin Welch, and Cece Wendel coxing, with junior Phoebe DeVlieger in stroke. While winning against other high school teams is impressive, entering the USRowing Youth Nationals is a whole other level, competing against club teams representing a city with select athlete all stars pulled from the region. The USRowing Championships sees 1,600 athletes competing in more than 350 crews, representing some 150 teams from across the country at Benderson Park in Sarasota-Bradenton, Florida. 2017 World Rowing Championships. The 2019 USRowing Youth National Championships were held June 6 - 9, 2019. Going in as underdogs for Saturday’s semi-finals, Merion Mercy Academy hung on to win their semi-final heat in what the site an nouncer called “the best race of the day.” The photo finish had them winning by only 0.14 seconds, with only a little over a second separating their boat from the next three boats—two from Seattle clubs and one from the powerhouse Saugatuck Boat Club in Connecticut. Sunday’s final had less drama, despite facing the same two Seattle clubs who had pushed them so hard in the semi-finals. Merion Mercy Academy won wire to wire by over two seconds, with a time of 7:16:206. As Coach Mike Brown laid out in a text the night before, the boat was in Jason Kelce underdog territory, as Merion Mercy Academy was one of only three scholastic programs to make the women’s finals out of over 30 events. His text finished with a statement that would be even more true after Sunday’s Finals: “108 boats will compete in 18 ‘A’ finals events on Sunday morning. Of the 18 events, nine are men’s and nine are women’s. Of the 54 women’s boats competing in the ‘A’ finals, only five are scholastic programs while 49 are clubs. Of the 30 finalists in the five women’s sweep events, only three are scholastic programs–one of which is your Merion Mercy Academy! Rare air, rare air indeed!” MMA’s Lightweight 4+ now looks ahead to participating in Henley on the Thames to compete for the Groton Cup at the Henley Women’s Regatta.

The Kingston Trio to Perform Legendary folk music group The Kingston Trio will perform two shows at Bristol Riverside Theatre on Sunday, July 7. Tickets are available for both the 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. shows. The Kingston Trio recently celebrated 60 years of entertaining audiences with the “Keep the Music Playing Tour.” All three current members, Mike Marvin, Tim Gorelangton and Don Marovich have intrinsic links to and experience with the original group: Mike is the adopted son of founding member Nick Reynolds, who was also his musical mentor; Tim, a close friend since boyhood, is one of the few musicians outside the Trio who has recorded with Nick Reynolds; and Don Marovich, who toured with the Trio. Many of their personal memories recall the iconic trio’s performances and journey as folk music made its extraordinary ascent to the pinnacle of popular culture – and the top of the music charts. They’ll perform such timeless classics as “Where Have All The Flowers Gone?,” “Tom Dooley” and “MTA.” Tickets are $49 and are available by visiting www.brtstage.org or calling the BRT Box Office at 215-785-0100. Bristol Riverside Theatre is located at 120 Radcliffe Street in Bristol, PA.
