Hamilton, Hank Mobley and many others made this crucial move. The Philadelphia Jazz Project is partnering with the Arch Street Meeting House, celebrating this milestone with its First Friday Rent Party Series. The Rent Party was an invention of Great Migrationeers who sometimes faced low wages and high rents. Many found themselves having to pull together a plan to pay the rent. The plan was a house party inspired by their Saturday Fish Fry traditions with liquor, food, live music and dancing, all with an admission price. The events happened weekly all over America, wherever these transplanted Southerners traveled. PJP’s rent parties will showcase great music by artists like Tony Jones, as well as feature a buffet of foods related to each state from which most Black Philadelphians have roots (VA, NC, SC, GA, FL) curated by Chef Valerie Erwin of Geechee Girl Restaurant. July’s First Friday Rent Party July 1 – Bassist Tony Jones, Celebrating Georgia Tony Jones aka Tony “TNT” Jones is a versatile Philadelphia-bred, bassist and composer. He plays acoustic upright bass, as well as electric bass guitar. He plays Jazz, Rhythm & Blues, Funk, Blues, and Jazz Fusion with the same intensity, artistry and wonder. Tony began his musical path at just five years old, playing around the neighborhood with a 12 piece percussion group. Soon, he found a love for the bass and began his life long relationship with the instrument. At 15 years of age, Tony Jones began to play with recording artists from Philadelphia International Records. Since those early days, Tony Jones has traveled all over the world, performing and sometimes, living in cities like Istanbul, Cologne, Brussels, Rome, Madrid, Paris and others. He has performed or recorded with a diverse array of artists including Nina Simone, Billy Paul, and Grover Washington Jr., Sister Sledge, Sonny Stitt, Norman Connors, The Blue Notes, Buddy Guy, Red Rodney, Eartha Kitt, Larry Coryell, Pacquito d’Rivera, Taj Mahal, Angela Bofield, Esther Phillips, Eddie Cleanhead Vinson, Big Mama Thornton, Pharoah Sanders, Lonnie Liston Smith, Ronnie Laws and others. Chef Valerie Erwin was the creator and executive chef of Philadelphia’s Geechee Girl Rice Café, a tribute to the food of the low country of South Carolina and Georgia, from which Valerie’s grandparents hailed. Valerie has worked in top-notch restaurants, has experience in retail food sales, catering, and commercial food service. July’s Rent Party menu will feature grilled chicken with Old Bay rub and traditional southern potato salad. The Great Migration – First Friday Rent Party Series takes place at Arch Street Meeting House – 320 Arch Street, Phila., PA 19106 – at 7:30 p.m. every first Friday through August 2016. July’s event is Friday, July 1, 2016 – Celebrating Georgia with musical guest Bassist Tony Jones. Free parking available on premises – first come, first serve. humor writing, how to build humor audiences through social media and book publishing options. And as a special guest, Narberth resident and narration expert Ruth Weisberg will be reading from Cavanagh’s book to highlight the importance of audio books in this fast-paced world. “I love teaching humor and teaching writers about sharing their work,” Cavanagh explained. “I have taught these topics at the Philadelphia Writers’ Conference and Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop, and I believe it’s a message that all writers need to understand.” A former journalist and syndicated columnist, Cavanagh gained a national audience when her work landed in the pages of First Magazine, USA Today and other national media. She launched the popular online humor magazine HumorOutcasts.com (HO) in 2011 as an outlet for writers to showcase their work in a world that offered few avenues for humor. HO now features the creative talents of more than 100 aspiring and accomplished writers, producers, comics and authors from all over the world. In 2012, Cavanagh founded HumorOutcasts Press (HOPress-ShorehouseBooks.com), a partner publishing company, when her humor writers approached her about publishing their books. To accommodate the work of non-humor writers, she added the Shorehouse Books label, and in 2016, HOPress-Shorehouse Books will introduce Corner Office Books for business and professional authors. In addition to “How to Write and Share Humor,” Cavanagh has penned four other humor books “Reality: Fantasy’s Evil Twin,” “Try and Avoid the Speed Bumps,” “A Canine’s Guide to the Good Life” (which she wrote with her dogs Frankie and Lulu) and “Life On the Off Ramp.” “I’m very excited about How to Write and Share Humor. I’ve taken on the role of a mentor in the last five years, and it’s a role I don’t take lightly,” she said. “It doesn’t matter if you are a writer or someone who just likes to read humor. I love to talk about the topic. Humor PHILADELPHIA is all about finding hope and healing in our lives and in today’s world, it is so important.”

Sisters of Mercy and MMA students, alumnae, faculty, staff, trustees, current and past parents, and friends were all smiles at the ceremonial groundbreaking. Shown are – Maida Pannepacker of Havertown, Alay’na DiSanto of Philadelphia, Sister Barbara Buckley of Havertown, Mimi Wolfington Heany of Villanova, Leslie Drialo Ryan of Rosemont, Sister Kathleen Keenan of Newtown Square, Sister Patricia Smith of Philadelphia, and William Githens of Drexel Hill.

Principal (and MMA alumna) Sister Barbara Buckley, of Havertown, welcomes guests. Fun fact: Sister Barbara used the same shovel in this ceremony that was used to break ground for the current building in the early 1950s.

hovels went in the ground as Merion Mercy Academy (located in Merion Station) moves Upward & Onward! The school is embarking on a 15-month major rebuilding project, which will dramatically improve its infrastructure and better support several of the academy’s trailblazing programs. The Board of Trustees determined that MMA is in need of renovations on a portion of the building that is more than 60 years old. The following revitalized areas are part of Merion Mercy’s Upward & Onward campaign and will help MMA to better execute the mission of educating young women: the Frances M. Maguire ’53 Art & Design Center, a student activities and athletics center, an energy-efficient kitchen and dining hall, counseling center, and collaborative learning spaces. While Merion Mercy has made great strides in its implementation of new programs and technologies, it is now addressing structural alterations that will set the stage for the school’s future as a dynamic institution that educates young women who lead and innovatively serve the needs of our world. Just in the 2015-16 school year alone, MMA students earned awards in everything from art to underwater robotics, academic accolades, with nine National Merit Scholars, participation in countless service projects—some that partnered with the underserved in the Philadelphia area and others that reached the needs of people in developing countries, and countless distinctions in the school’s 72 clubs, teams, and organizations. Furthermore, MMA’s alumnae share their spirit of mercy by working and serving throughout the world in hundreds of professions and in dozens of locations, such as the Americas, Africa, Canada, New Zealand, China, Ireland, Scotland, Spain, France, Germany, US Virgin Islands, and Italy. But perhaps even more true to the Mercy identity, no matter what career, vocation, project, or hobby, MMA’s alumnae consistently and joyfully bring the face of Mercy to all they do.

PEACE CENTER OF DELAWARE COUNTY SCREENING OF “RABBIT-PROOF FENCE” n Friday, July 1, at 7p.m., a true tale of aboriginal independence set in Australia, “Rabbit-Proof Fence,” will be screened at the Peace Center of Delaware County First-Friday Free Large Screen Film Series. The Peace Center is located at 1001 Old Sproul Road, Springfield, PA 19064. Doors open to the public at 6:30 p.m. for light refreshments. “Rabbit-Proof Fence” tells the true story of three young girls who crossed the harsh Australian desert on foot to return to their home. Following an Australian government edict in 1931, black aboriginal children and children of mixed marriages were gathered up by whites and taken to settlements to be assimilated into white culture. At the settlement, the girls were forbidden to speak their native language, forced to abandon their aboriginal heritage, and taught to be culturally white. After several experiences with solitary confinement, the three girls, scared and homesick, planned and executed a daring escape from the grim camp, with its harsh life of pad-

locks, barred windows, and hard cold beds. The girls headed for the nearby rabbit-proof fence stretching more than 1,500 miles through the desert toward their home in Jigalong. Their journey lasted more than a month, and they survived on everything from emus to feral cats, while narrowly avoiding the police, professional trackers, and hostile white settlers. Visually beautiful, compelling, and well-acted with an unforgettable musical score by Peter Gabriel. “Rabbit-Proof Fence,” Australian. 2002. 1 hr. 34 min. Drama. Some English subtitles. “Freedom Blast!” at Fort Mifflin ort Mifflin celebrates Independence Day with a blast – “Freedom Blast!” on Saturday, July 2, from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. Journey through the Declaration of Independence at a site that defended the young United States of America against the greatest bombardment of the Revolutionary War. Participate in the Flag Raising Ceremony (10:15 AM), then stay to enjoy guided tours, hands-on living history activities, uniform, weapon and cannon demonstrations. Join the Army (circa 1777) and learn to drill with a wooden musket! Enjoy the view and the breeze in the riverfront picnic area. FREE parking. Originally built by the British in 1771, Fort Mifflin supported the American Revolution by delaying the re-supply of British forces occupying the rebel capital of Philadelphia in November, 1777. Between British warships on the Delaware and their troops in Philadelphia sat a humble fort built of wood and stone, defended by some of the most determined men of the American Revolution. Fort Mifflin did not allow the British Navy to go easily into Philadelphia. For six long weeks, fighting against cold, hunger and despair, with only scarce supplies, the soldiers on Mud Island fought to hold on to Fort Mifflin. Although ultimately defeated, Fort Mifflin never surrendered. In fact, the American defense was so courageous that even the British paid tribute: Ambrose Searle, General Howe’s personal secretary remarked “They certainly defended it with a spirit they have shown no where else to an equal degree during the war.” Join the fun on Saturday, July 2, from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. General admission tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, $6 for Veterans or students under 12. Fort Mifflin is proud to be a Blue Star Museum, offering complimentary admission for all active duty military personnel and their families. ID required.
