LIVING WATER COMMUNITY CENTER LOOK WHAT’S HAPPENING!

“Those who go through Summer Stage aren’t all destined to be on Broadway or TV. While the program is here to teach the fundamentals of the arts, when it comes down to it, it’s about learning what it takes to work as a team. To work together to make the best product. Ultimately, this skill can be used in all facets of life.” Joining Chris on stage is special guest Krissy Fraelich. Krissy, who also went through the UD Summer Stage program, has been a professional actress for over 25 years. She was last seen as Diana in “Next to Normal” at the Arden Theatre. She made her Broadway debut in Frank Wildhorn’s “The Civil War” and played the Narrator in the First National Tour of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” Chris Sapienza of Wise Man Productions brings “One Night Only!” to UDPAC with other UD Summer Stage alumni on June 8. Several Summer Stage alumni have written, produced and performed in the upcoming world premiere of “A Game of Black and White: The Tale of Oceanic 815,” a musical parody of the TV series “Lost.” Cast members will perform a selection from the new musical. The evening takes “cabaret” to the next level, featuring songs by various composers including UD Summer Stage alum Brian Lowdermilk. Other songs performed by Chris are by Jason Robert Brown, Pete Mills, Menken and Ashman as well as John Bucchino. Backing up the performers are some of the finest musicians in the area, including John Hoey on the drums, also a Summer Stage alum! Other musicians include SaraBeth Taber-Miller on cello, Michael Etkins on Bass and pianist John Grecia.

The event is a collaboration between PCA, the Fairmount Park Conservancy and Philadelphia Parks & Recreation. “This event grew out of our joint efforts to encourage seniors to visit city parks more often,” Zaremba said. “We hope that the ‘Senior Strut’ might spur older adults to join walking groups or perhaps to form walking groups of their own.” Tickets are $3 per person and must be purchased in advance. DVOC PRESENTS THE MARRIAGE

OF

FIGARO

WITH

ORCHESTRA

he Delaware Valley Opera Company wanted to make a splash for its debut at Stage One Performing Art Center in Media. So the company is doing something special; they have hired a chamber orchestra for Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, the first production of the 2013 Summer Festival! The Marriage of Figaro is a real crowd-pleaser. Opera fans love the infectious melodies, and even newcomers will recognize some of the tunes from films and TV. Fans thrill over every gorgeously spun note in each aria and every twist of a musical line in the ensembles. Newbies are pleased to discover that opera can be funny. This tale is truly worthy of a sit-com. Figaro and his fiancée Susanna are servants to the Count and Countess Almaviva. With days to go before their wedding, Susanna and Figaro realize that the Count’s roving eyes have fallen on Susanna. The Countess has noticed, too. Tired of her husband’s philandering, the Countess concocts a scheme with Susanna to catch the Count in the act once and for all. And along the way there are plenty of mishaps, moments of mistaken identity, and disguises. Stage Director Connie Koppe bucks the trend of setting operas in the present day, and presents Figaro in its original time period. Music director Tim Ribchester, who is on the faculty at the Academy of Vocal Arts, spearheaded an online fundraising campaign to hire the chamber orchestra for this production. “I’m extremely excited to be conducting DVOC’s first professional orchestra for this production, thanks to the crowdfunding site Kickstarter, with whom we completed a recent successful campaign,” Ribchester said. “Figaro’s textures are ideal for a small chamber orchestra, as they are much more about color and agility than the dramatic weight of the kind necessary for Don Giovanni, Die Zauberflote, or operas by later composers. The score contains so many details,

T

not least the beguiling clarinet sounds accompanying the Countess’s music and Cherubino’s, and the sparkling violin lines that marry so beautifully with the richness of the harmonies in the lower strings (especially in the Act II finale with its crucial low C on double bass). Trumpets and timpani are used sparingly, but are essential to create the full sense of festivity at the end of each Act, even though in Act II things seem to be tipping in favor of the characters whose motives we suspect are less than honorable. Singers are galvanized by this kind of support into communicating at their very best, and we’re excited to bring this opera fully to life in a great new venue.” The cast includes baritone Brian Ming Chu as Count Almaviva, soprano Meghan Dewald as Countess Almaviva, soprano Tracy Sturgis as Susanna, bass-baritone Martin Hargrove as Figaro, mezzo-soprano Alyssa Lehman as Cherubino, mezzo-soprano Paula Rivera-Dantagnan as Marcellina, tenor Christopher Lorge as Basilio and Don Curzio, bass Milo Morris as Bartolo, baritone Travis Lucas as Antonio, and soprano Robyn Muse as Barbarina. DVOC presents The Marriage of Figaro in Italian with supertitles on June 15 and 19 at 8 p.m. at Stage One, 101 Plush Mill Road, Wallingford, PA 19086. For directions, visit www.pacofdelco.org, or call 610-565-2110. For details about DVOC’s 2013 Summer Festival, visit DVOC’s website, www.dvopera.org. Stage One Performing Arts Center is handicapped accessible and climate controlled. Plenty of off-street parking is available. Many fine restaurants can be found on State Street, a few blocks from the performance center. Since its beginnings nearly 35 years ago, DVOC has offered opera at an affordable price while providing a career stepping-stone for area singers. DVOC performers receive training and education through exposure to all facets of operatic production, and performance opportunities in a variety of operas.

Ghenady Meirson at far left (clapping). Summer of 2011. Photo/L.C. Kelley ussian Opera Workshop was founded in Philadelphia in 2011 by Ghenady Meirson (faculty member at the Academy of Vocal Arts and Curtis Institute of Music) as an independent summer training program for aspiring and professional opera singers. Like no other opera training program in the world, the 30-day Workshop offers an intensive immersion into the Russian language and vocal training, followed by free public performances of the studied repertoire. Participating opera artists arrive from across the United States and from abroad. “Now in its third summer season, Russian Opera Workshop has established itself as one of the world’s most important and influential programs, right here in Philadelphia. Even Russians from Russia want to participate,” says Meirson, the program founder and master pianist. Indeed, its alumni success is impressive: as of Spring of 2013, five opera companies nationwide hired Russian Opera Workshop artists in the roles they learned here. The 2013 season will open on Monday, June 24 with a lively lecture about Francesca da Rimini given by a renowned American composer Daron Hagen, followed by the concert of Russian Romance Songs, which will introduce all the Workshop participants to the audience, with Laura Ward at the piano. On June 25-27, Russian Opera Workshop presents, in concert, a Philadelphia premiere of S. Rachmaninoff opera Francesca da Rimini, and P. Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, a rarely performed scene from the unfinished opera based on Shakespeare’s drama. Rachmaninoff’s Francesca da Rimini, an opera with libretto written by Tchaikovsky’s brother Modest, premiered in Moscow in 1906. It is based on the story of Francesca da Rimini in the fifth canto of Dante’s epic poem The Inferno (the first part of The Divine Comedy). The performance of Francesca da Rimini includes a chorus comprised of singers from local choral groups: Philadelphia Singers, Choral Arts Philadelphia, Mendelssohn Club, and Vox Ama Deus. All performances start at 7:30 p.m. at the Helen Corning Warden Theater, the Academy of Vocal Arts, 1920 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, PA, 19103. Performances are in Russian with English supertitles. Admission is free, with open seating. The public performances are preceded by a series of three vocal Master Classes led by premier voice coaches and professors, June 7-21, 2013, which are also open to public at no charge and offer a unique chance to observe the training process For information and full schedule, visit www.RussianOperaWorkshop.com.
