This year’s trip took the boys and their chaperones, Devon Prep Teacher Mr. Joe Lewis of Exton and alumni parent Mr. Sam Young of Springfield, to Allentown, PA to do some much needed cleaning, painting, landscaping, weeding, moving and more for a hospital, convent, soup kitchen and personal residence. Devon Prep’s team joined two hundred students and adults from Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Missouri and New Jersey who also participated in the trip. They spent six days in the area sleeping on the classroom floors of St. Joseph the Worker School at night and working together during the day. The Devon Prep students included rising seniors Willson Camp of Spring City, Thomas Hang of Malvern, Tyler Keough of Collegeville, Grant Kowalewski of Downingtown, Jack Marquis of Wayne, Brandon Smoot of West Chester, and Paul Yoo of King of Prussia and rising sophomore Graham Misko of Berwyn and rising freshman Dylan Smoot of West Chester. One of the biggest projects for the team was building an eight foot high fence around an eight acre tract of land used to grow an assortment of vegetables for soup kitchens and homeless shelters in the area. The fence was needed to keep animals away from the crops. “This was one of the more difficult but rewarding jobs we did,” said Mr. Lewis. “We were able to finish the work and the people were especially grateful. It was an extremely difficult week to be working outside as the temperatures were in the mid 90’s throughout the week. But the boys never complain-

ee DelleMonache has been selected to speak on “Sport and Mercy” at the XIII International Symposium of University Professors: Knowledge and Mercy, scheduled for September 7-11 at the Vatican. DelleMonache, director of the Neumann University Institute for Sport, Spirituality and Character Development, is the sole representative from the United States who will speak in the “Sport and Mercy” track of the symposium. She was invited to speak by the Vatican Congregation for Catholic Education. Her topic is “Sport, spirituality and character development: experiencing mercy through a unique sport ministry.” In the abstract of her presentation, DelleMonache writes: “Athletics has the potential to lead to a deeper understanding of the need for mercy in our lives. It offers a transformative lens through which to explore life’s most significant questions: Who am I? What is my place in this world? Research documents that this quest for discovery during the college years reveals college students’ hunger for spiritual nourishment. Educators, therefore, have a sacred responsibility to guide these young people on their journey of spiritual discovery. Informed by the Catholic Franciscan tradition, the Neumann University Institute for Sport, Spirituality and Character Development provides opportunities to experience spiritual works of mercy through its unique ministry to student-athletes and coaches.” Explaining the approach used at the Institute, she continues: “Team chaplain lay ministry, commissioning rituals, team reflections, and online resources are designed to deepen awareness of self, others and God and help student-athletes and coaches learn to recognize God’s endless offer of mercy in their lives.” Professors from Italy, the United Kingdom and Kenya will join DelleMonache in addressing various aspects of the relationship between sport and mercy. DelleMonache has been director of the Institute since 2013. From 2005-2013, she served as the Institute’s coordinator for management and planning, and as the ISSCD liaison with numerous external organizations, such as the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, the National Catholic Education Association, Catholic Athletes for Christ, and Beyond Sport International. She holds a B.A. in English and communications from Cabrini College, an M.S. in sport management from Neumann University, and is currently writing her dissertation for the organizational leadership Ph.D. program at

The lectures are free of charge and open to the public. Tuesday, September 20, 2016, 4 p.m. – “The Meaning of Meaningful Work” – Robert W. Rebele, MAPP Robert “Reb” Rebele will explore recent research on careers as important sources of financial, social, and psychological rewards to support values and goals. He believes that workplaces can become hubs of community, fostering valued relationships, and that jobs can resonate with identity and the kinds of people employees seek to be. Rebele is a researcher for Wharton People Analytics and teaches in the Master of Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) program at the University of Pennsylvania. His research and consulting projects bring behavioral science and research into the world of work to drive better employee experiences and organizational outcomes, most recently at Google, JetBlue, Acumen, Robert “Reb” Rebele will explore recent research on careers as important sources of financial, Warby Parker, and Teach for America. social, and psychological rewards to support Tuesday, November 15, 2016, 4 p.m. values and goals, in his September 20 – “Emotional Intelligence and Why presentation, “The Meaning of Meaningful Work.” Your E.Q. Those with a high E.Q. have the ability to manage their feelings so they are expressed appropriately and effectively. Uczynski is an expert in the field of emotional intelligence and specializes in the productive resolution of conflict in the workplace. Tuesday, February 28, 4 p.m. – “Food For Thought” – A panel presentation An expert panel will examine food choices and dietary trends to help you feel more energetic and, ultimately, experience a greater sense of well being at work and at home.
