will host the Philadelphia Obon Festival. This free cultural festival will take place outside of Shofuso, the Japanese house and garden in West Fairmount Park, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will include live music and dance, tea ceremony demonstrations, arts, crafts, traditional games, food trucks, as well as a Japanese flea market and gift shop. Shofuso will be open with regular admission rates. In Japan, Obon is a festival that combines spiritualism with communal fun. With roots in Buddhism and Confucianism, Obon has evolved into a family reunion holiday during which people return to ancestral family places, and when the spirits are said to visit their families in turn. The Japanese diaspora has brought Obon outside of Japan, adding new cultural elements to the traditions such as taiko drumming and shamisen (a Japanese three-string lute) music contests. Contemporary festivals all over the world regularly feature a carnival-like atmosphere with seasonal snacks like watermelon and inarizushi (a kind of sushi or rice ball) — and in Hawaii: spam musubi. Philadelphia’s Obon Festival began in 2013 in partnership with three local Japanese performing arts organizations: Kyo

www.greaterphillyuu.org/info Daiko, the IchiFuji-kai Dance Association, and Urasenke Philadelphia. The leadership of Therese Stevens and Fujima Nishiki-no (nee Helen Moss) brought traditional music and folk dance accompanied by taiko drumming to the festival, while Morgan Beard and the Urasenke Tea School brought tea demonstrations to the festival audience. The festival has since expanded to include food trucks and a Japanese flea market and gift shop. This year, dance leaders from IchiFuji-kai will facilitate a folk dance practice the weekend before Obon on Sunday, August 12, from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The dance practice is free and open to the public. JASGP is a private nonprofit organization that has brought Philadelphia and Japan closer together for more than 25 years through art, business, and culture. JASGP operates Shofuso, produces the Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival, and presents the US-Japan Business and Public Policy Series, as well as other arts, business, culture, and educational programming for all ages. Recorded over a 10-day period in L.A., Whistle Down The Wind was produced by three-time Grammy® Award winner Joe Henry (Bonnie Raitt, Allen Toussaint, and others) and includes songs written by Tom Waits, Anohni, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Josh Ritter, Eliza Gilkyson, and more. The new music marks the first release from Baez since 2008’s Grammy® nominated album, Day After Tomorrow. Baez remains a musical force of incalculable influence. She marched on the front line of the civil rights movement with Martin Luther King, Jr.; shined a spotlight on the Free Speech Movement; took to the fields with Cesar Chavez; organized resistance to the Vietnam War; inspired Vaclav Havel in his fight for a Czech Republic; saluted the Dixie Chicks for their courage to protest the Iraq war; stood with old friend Nelson Mandela in London’s Hyde Park as the world celebrated his 90th birthday; and, most recently, protested the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline at Standing Rock Sioux Reser vation. To this day, she continues to stand passionately on behalf of causes she embraces. Other featured upcoming performances at the Kimmel Center Cultural Campus include: Pat Matheny (October 5, 2018, Merriam Theater), and AC2: Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen (November 3, 2018, Academy of Music). Another offering features singer and peace activist Sharon Katz who will present her documentary, When Voices Meet, about her work to help bring apartheid to an end in South Africa, accompanied by songs performed by Ms. Katz. Or, join Dr. Steven Weitzman as he explores the history of the FBI’s interaction with various religious groups, taking the story from the days of J. Edgar Hoover, a former Sunday school teacher, into the age of James Comey, a religious studies major (note: this lecture will take place at Temple Beth Hillel-Beth El). Another class will be led by actress and director Diane Steinbrink who will focus on the life and work of southern Jewish playwright Alfred Uhry, (author of Driving Miss Daisy). The audience will learn about Uhry’s unique southern background as he shared it with Ms. Steinbrink, who will present monologues from some of his most significant plays including DRIVING MISS DAISY, THE LAST NIGHT AT BALLYHOO, and PARADE. And, in the final week of the program, Dr. Stephen Phillips will take the audience on his extraordinary 14-day journey through post-revolution Egypt, from Old Cairo to the Aswan Dam. Dr. Phillips visited Egypt just days after the revolution in 2011, and as an archeologist he brings insights into the modern Egyptian era. The summer program will conclude with actress Linda Kenyon’s performance as Julia Child, world famous French chef and television host; while her public face and voice became familiar to all of us, this play focuses on her private side—especially the relationship and great love story with her husband, Paul. Deco on the Delaware

PECO Multicultural Series

Vintage fans, jazz lovers, and stylish Philadelphians alike are expected to gather at the historic Glen Foerd estate for the fourth annual Deco on the Delaware (previously Jazz Age on the Delaware), on Saturday, August 4, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Philadelphia’s premier 1920s-inspired event is a non-profit fundraiser with proceeds going toward Glen Foerd’s environmental education programs. Attendees will dance, drink, and dine alongside the Delaware River, with many special guests making it an unforgettable day. The highly anticipated fashion contest will encourage attendees to wear their best 1920s - 1930s attire. Although not required, dressing to the theme is strongly encouraged and may even lead to a win! Prizes will be awarded to “Most Dapper Gent” and “Most Fashionable Flapper,” with one runner-up in each category (contestants will be sorted by the gender of their outfit, not the gender of the contestant). If attendees would rather compete with food rather than fashion, they can submit a pie for the beloved homemade pie baking contest. Attendees can bring their own meal to be enjoyed as a picnic on the lawn, or they choose from one of many picnic-style food and drink packages. Tickets begin at $45, and children under 12 are free. Haverford School students Ryan Ngo and Benji Bacharach with a PALS buddy during their camp counseling experience this summer. founded in 2004 with 16 campers and counselors in Doylestown and has grown to more than 1,100 with locations throughout the country. Ngo and Bacharach have been working with the organization for two years, and continue to be inspired by the people they met and relationships they form. “I came to PALS to understand the perspectives of those with special needs, said Ngo. “During my week with my buddy, I learned to feel empathy for him and his family’s struggles, but most importantly, I learned that he is a normal kid like me. I soon learned that the mission of PALS is not only to create a transformative experience for the campers, but for the volunteer counselors as well, so that they can spread the message of love and empathy for all. Bacharach is an ambassador for PALS, assisting with counselor recruiting and fundraising. “PALS creates an inclusive environment and allows you to be more accepting of others, he says. “You get so close to someone so different yourself, and I think that’s really cool. The neatest thing that PALS does is the Congratulations Project. You sit down one-onone with your camper and help them write a letter to a mother of a newborn with Down syndrome. Instead of it being consolatory, it’s congratulatory. My camper wrote about how he wants to get married, have kids, and be the family chef like his dad. Connections like this are just magical. Ngo and Bacharach are working with the School’s Student Service Board to help generate more interest in PALS. “I strongly encourage my fellow classmates at Haverford to volunteer at PALS, said Ngo. “Not only will they meet new people and experience something new, they will build stronger bonds with each other. I cannot promise that the work will be easy, but I can attest that the PALS experience is one that will build us all into better men.

To start our meal we sliced a complimentary loaf of Honey Porterhouse Steak with Baked Potato. Photo/J. Bloom Wheat bread accompanied with a ramekin of soft, spreadable butter. My dining partner chose unsweetened ice tea and I splurged with a well-mixed Moscow Mule ($8.29) served in a silver cup. We began our dinner with the Mixed Greens Salad ($3.99) made up of assorted lettuces, croutons, tomato and onion with a Raspberry Vinaigrette and Thousand Island dressing on the side. The salad was crisp and chilled to perfection, and the signature dressings were delicious. My dining partner ordered a Porterhouse Steak ($27.99) medium rare with a baked potato and a side ramekin of toppings. Both were excellent and served as ordered. She took half of the steak home to dine on later. I have a dietary restriction and I must limit the salt contents of my food. I ordered the 7 oz. LongHorn Salmon ($18.99) Mixed Greens Salad with side dressings. lightly seasoned, served on a Photo/J. Bloom bed of white rice with a side of steamed asparagus. I also received ramekins of Horse Radish and Honey Mustard sauce to dip in. The salmon was perfectly cooked and moist inside and the asparagus spears were Apple Gold Rush Dessert. Photo/J. Bloom al dente. The sauces are a must-try! For dessert we shared the house special, Apple Gold Rush ($8.99) that brought a crisp apple tart with a topping of Vanilla Ice Cream. This was a perfect end to a delightful dining experience. LongHorn Steakhouse offers plenty of free parking with marked handicapped spaces near the entrance. To celebrate the opening, LongHorn Steakhouse made a large donation to the Boys and Girls Club of Western Pennsylvania. We look forward to return to taste other dishes from the extensive menu. Red Cross Blood Shortage Continues Emergency need remains; critical call for type O blood donors to donate now housands of people have responded to the emergency call for blood and platelet donations issued by the American Red Cross in early July. Still, there continues to be an emergency need for donors of all blood types, especially type O, to give now to address a severe blood shortage. Red Cross blood donations are being distributed to hospitals faster than they are coming in, and right now there is less than a five-day blood supply on hand. The Red Cross strives to keep a five-day supply of blood to meet the needs of patients and to be prepared for emergencies that require significant volumes of donated blood products. “Patients don’t get a summer break from the need for lifesaving treatments, so it is critical that hospitals have access to blood products each and every day,” said Alana Mauger, communications manager of the Penn Jersey Blood Services Region. “We sincerely appreciate those who have responded to the call to help save lives, but the emergency need remains. Those who haven’t rolled up a sleeve to give are urged to do so today.” There is a particular need for type O blood, which plays an important role in ongoing patient care and emergencies. Type O positive is the most transfused blood type and can be given to patients with any Rh-positive blood type. Type O negative is the universal blood type and can be given to any patient. It’s what emergency room personnel reach for when there is no time to determine the blood type of patients in the most serious situations. In thanks, all those who come to donate blood or platelets July 30 through August 30, 2018, will receive a $5 Amazon.com Gift Card via email. (Restrictions apply; see www.amazon.com/gc-legal. More info and details are available at www.RedCrossBlood.org/Together.) Donors of all blood types are urged to make an appointment to give now using the free American Red Cross Blood Donor App, by visiting www.RedCrossBlood.org or by calling 1800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). From left – see Gavin DeGraw and Phillip Phillips perform at Parx Casino’s Xcite Center on Tuesday, August 28, 2018, at 7 p.m. o-headliners Phillip Phillips and Gavin DeGraw will perform at Parx Casino®’s Xcite Center on Tuesday, August 28, 2018, at 7 p.m. The state-of-the-art Xcite Center will allow fans to get up close and personal with the award-winning singers as they bare their souls through their platinum selling songs. This one-of-a-kind experience will happen right before Labor Day Weekend, making it the perfect way for fans to end their summer. Doors for the show will open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $35 to $80 and are on sale now at www.parxcasino.com/xcitecenter. American-born singer and songwriter Phillip Phillips won the eleventh season of American Idol and his coronation song “Home,” released after his win, became the all-time best selling song from American Idol. Phillips has then since released two chart-topping albums since “Home” in spring 2012, and has taken his expansive brand of earthy, guitar-fueled rock to stages across the globe. With his soulful vocals and ruggedly warm sensibilities, the Georgia-bred 26-year-old saw his first full-length effort, The World from the Side of the Moon, go platinum after debuting at #4 on the Billboard Top 200. In 2014 his second album, Behind the Light, offered up the lead anthemic folk-rock radio hit “Raging Fire.” Phillips released “Miles” in the summer of 2017 as he toured North America with the Goo Goo Dolls, as a precursor to his recent and highly anticipated third full-length, Collateral. Collateral was released January 19, 2018 and also includes the recent single, “Into The Wild” and fan favorite, “Magnetic.” Gavin DeGraw is a multi-platinum selling singer, performer and songwriter. He first broke through with the 2003 release of his debut album, Chariot, which sold over 1 million copies, earned platinum certification, and yielded three hit singles: “I Don’t Want To Be,” “Follow Through,” and the title-track, “Chariot.” Gavin’s self-titled second album debuted at No. 1 on the digital sales chart and at No. 7 on Billboard’s Top 200 album chart in 2008, earning Gavin his first Top 10 album. His third studio album, Sweeter, was released in September 2011 and produced the smash single, “Not Over You,” co-written with OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder. The track reached #1 on the Hot AC charts, was a top 10 hit on Top 40, and was certified double platinum. In 2013 DeGraw released his fourth studio album, Make A Move, which included the hit song “Best I Ever Had” and garnered rave reviews from such publications as Billboard, People and Entertainment Weekly amongst many others. In addition, Gavin was nominated for his first Grammy for “We Both Know,” the song he co-wrote with Colbie Caillat for the 2013 film, “Safe Haven.” Since then he has been consistently touring around the world, including sold out dates with the legendary Billy Joel and hit a milestone with the release of his first greatest hits compilation titled Finest Hour in the fall of 2014. Gavin’s fifth studio album, Something Worth Saving, released in 2016, through his longtime label RCA Records, featured the hit single “She Sets The City On Fire.” DeGraw is currently on the road touring and working on new music. Phillips and DeGraw will co-headline at The Xcite Center at Parx located at 2999 Street Rd., Bensalem, PA 19020. Tickets for Xcite Center performances are available at the box office or by visiting www.Parxcasino.com.
