he debut album from The Lift Up, Without Dreams, We Are Only Sleeping will be released in striking fashion with a party at Philly’s own Khyber Pass Pub (56 South Second Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 19106) on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at 9 p.m.* This is the album that fans of bands such as “The Situation” have been waiting for, but thought might never happen. Fortunately for those fans, and others sure to follow, Without Dreams… is a grand slam of an album that will take listeners back in time even as they will hear sounds as fresh and crisp as anything heard on a favorite indie radio station today. The Lift Up consists of Joe Castro (Prospect Park, Pennsylvania) on lead vocals and guitars, Larry Zappaterrini (Malvern, Pennsylvania) on bass and backing vocals and John Paul Travis (Wilmington, Delaware) on drums, backing vocals, and piano. This trio played together with “The Situation” but has chartered heretofore-unknown territory with this melodic, catchy, nine-song set, all penned by Castro. Fans of the trio will be able to download the album on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 and see the band perform tracks from it that evening. A Delaware show to celebrate the album release is forthcoming. The record was co-produced by the band and Grammy-nominated producer, Jim Salamone at Cambridge Sound Studios in Newtown, Pennsylvania. He has worked with artists such as Bon Jovi, Vanessa Williams, Teddy Pendergrass, and Grover Washington, Jr. The songs on Without Dreams... alternate between aggressive, modern rock garage stompers and quiet moments of equally intense sonic reflection. The Lift Up to Release Debut Album Continued from front page
Lyrically, the songs deal with the pressures of adult life and of trying to survive under the constant weight of one’s past. The opening chords of “All We Ever Wanted” will grab listeners and not let go. The storytelling in “Norfolk Street” might make Glen Hansard add another cover to his set list, or save that one for the next “Frames” project. The jangly guitar and melancholy feel of “As Always is Never Again” perfectly rues the end of summer, and the title track wraps up these original pieces with typical power and beauty. Although officially forming in 2012, the three band mates are old friends, having played together previously in The Situation. Fronted by songwriter Christopher Tucker, and signed to Elephant Stone Records, they released the Reece Nasty EP in 2003, followed by their self-titled LP in 2006. Both garnered critical praise. The band toured America, and opened for The Strokes, The Libertines, Nada Surf, and Arthur Lee & Love, among others. The group disbanded in 2006 following Castro’s departure. Speaking about the split, Castro says, “By the time it ended, I was completely burned out on the music business. It just killed any joy in making music for me.” In the years that followed, he switched his focus toward art, gaining a solid reputation as both a collage artist and painter, showing in galleries and art spaces across the United States, Canada, Italy and the United Kingdom. In fact, Castro also designed the cover for this CD and is one hot visual artist: his collage work is going to shown in a new book, “The Art of Collage: Contemporary Collage in Modern Art,” and he is also the featured cover artist for a quarterly art publication called “The Artist Catalogue,” in their fall 2013 issue. After receiving an acoustic guitar as a gift from his wife following the birth of their daughter, Castro began to fall in love with music
again, writing songs and, for the first time, singing them himself. “I would spend these long nights singing to the baby, trying to help her go to sleep. And I discovered I really enjoyed singing.” Before long, Castro reached out to Larry and John Paul to form The Lift Up. “There was never a doubt in my mind that if I decided to form a new band, it would be with John Paul and Larry. There’s real musical chemistry there and, given our history, I think we all felt there was some unfinished business.” Deciding to remain a three piece, the band took its influences primarily from classic punk trios like The Jam, Husker Du, The Minutemen, and Agent Orange, while also incorporating a deep love for The Smiths, The Ramones, The Clash and the songwriting of Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, and Nick Cave. “This record was really back to square one for me, as a musician” says Castro. “It was about finding my vocal style, and about becoming a writer rather than just some flashy guitar player. The simplicity of 1950s rock-n-roll and early punk bands like The Ramones and The Heartbreakers played a big part in my learning how to write songs and was definitely a heavy influence on the record.” Without Dreams... is a strong introduction to the band that will leave listeners wanting more. It will be available digitally at most major outlets (iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, Napster, Rdio, etc.) as well as a limited edition CD, which is now available through The Lift Up’s website and at their shows. The album is being distributed through mondotunes.com. Peace Center Free Large Screen Film Series Board Certified Aesthetic Physician Member of American Society of Bariatric Physicians
Friday, September 6, at 7 p.m., Peace Center of Delaware County, 1001 Old Sproul Road, Springfield, PA, to show the 2013 Oscar Nominee for “Best Foreign Language Film,” NO, as part of Peace Center’s First-Friday Free Large Screen Film Series. On September 11, 1973, General Augusto Pinochet seized power in Chile in a bloody coup supported by the United States government. The military coup overthrew the freely elected Marxist government of Salvador Allende. Fifteen years later in 1988, international pressure forced Pinochet to accept a YES or NO vote by Chileans on his continued rule. A young Chilean ad executive devises an unique media plan to promote a “No” vote on the referendum and to free Chile of Pinochet. NO is a moving docudrama that combines an emotional charge and satire with a political thriller to tell the true story of the media campaign that helped to peacefully overthrow one of the most brutal military dictatorships of our time. Doors at the Peace Center open at 6:30 p.m. for light refreshments. An afterfilm discussion follows the film. For info or directions, visit www.delcopeacecenter.org or call 610-544-1818.

alley Forge mystery and thriller author, John F. Dobbyn, will visit Tredyffrin Public Library, 582 Upper Gulph Road, Strafford, on Tuesday, September 10 at 7:30 p.m., to discuss his new book Deadly Diamonds. Dobbyn’s new thriller, the fourth in his Knight-Devlin series, finds the protagonist attorneys caught in the crosshairs of the Italian Mafia in North Boston, the Irish Mafia in South Boston, criminal remnants of the Irish Republic Army, and the murderous child-army of the Sierra Leone rebels—all due to their involvement in the deadly business of diamonds. Knight and Devlin steer a tortuous path through the world of diamond smuggling where huge sums of cash translate into caches of weapons and drugs. Dobbyn’s plot and storytelling are heart stopping and his research is impeccable. Don’t miss this fascinating discussion on the culture of the diamond trade and the great human price that is expended in the acquisition of these gems! For information and to register, visit tredyffrinlibraries.org or call 610-688-7092. Copies of Deadly Diamonds will be available for sale and signing by the author. ven non-Yiddish-speaking people frequently hear, read, and use Yiddish words like mentsh, shlep, nosh, kvetch, mayven, and chutzpa. But they are likely to know very little about the fascinating story of the history of Yiddish and its significant cultural influence both in the Old World and the New. They’ll have the opportunity to learn more when Prof. Rakhmiel Peltz, Ph.D., leads a course titled “Who Needs Yiddish?” this fall at Adath Israel in Merion. Prof. Peltz, Director of Judaic Studies at Drexel University and a leading authority on Yiddish language, culture, and social history, will explore: • Why we love Yiddish: its special character as a language, including its pithy proverbs, colorful curses, and lyrical lullabies. • Where Yiddish came from and how it grew – a linguistic and cultural panorama.

State Senator Anthony Williams will receive ZOA’s Friend of Zion Award in recognition of his support for Israel in the face of local outbreaks of anti-Israel activities. The event will feature a cocktail hour and buffet, the award ceremony and a dessert reception. A feature of the Gala is ZOA’s popular commemorative Ad Journal. The Journal features biographies of the honorees, details about the awards plus national and local advertisers and congratulatory and “Mazel Tov” notices. ZOA is the region’s leading pro-Israel educational organization. ZOA also engages in advocacy and outreach. Regular activities include quarterly meetings and a weekly pro-Israel demonstration. It also sponsors special events, a speakers bureau, rallies, action alerts and letter-writing campaigns. ZOA is a grassroots, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. To place an ad or notice in the Gala Ad Journal or to purchase tickets, call the ZOA Office at 610-660-9466.

grand stands glowing yellow, and crowds swelling, the scene collectively conveys a momentous and social evening event at Dressage at Devon. “If this piece had a title it would be “The Stars Come Out at Night,” says Severson, “because Friday and Saturday night are the when the most exciting events happen at DAD.” After roughly two months, Severson completed the second and final version of her painting. “I completely changed my mind about half way through the process. I didn’t feel that the first painting had the level of passion or quality of work that I’m used to so I started over,” explains Severson. Having participated in Dressage at Devon for many years managing her own gallery in the festival of shops, Severson is no stranger to the event. Her daughter, Kristin – a dressage rider and trainer – keeps her involved an interested in the sport. “It’s a wonderful thing to be involved in this way,” says Severson. The artist will be accessible to meet and sign posters during Dressage at Devon at the committee booth. Her original artwork for the poster will be for available for sale. Severson’s paintings have appeared on the covers of the Chronicle of the Horse, Oasis magazine and the American Lipizzan Registry. She is also featured in “The Four Seasons of Chester County, Volume IV; The Artists.” Her work is in public and private collections throughout the U.S. and internationally, including Glaxo Smith Kline, The National Bank of Malvern, the Count and Countess Rudolph DeLooz of Belgium, the Centre Psychologue de Gestaltiste of Quebec, the Hotel Fibule in Morocco, and the Correios Servicos, Brazil. The 2013 Dressage at Devon show will take place September 24 through September 29, 2013 at the Devon Horse Show in Devon, PA. For info, visit www.dressageatdevon.org. To see more of Severson’s work, or to contact her directly for information, online visit www.sandraseverson.com.
