Clockwise, from back – Jack Denman of Havertown as Reginald Van Cleef, Molly McCarthy of Media as Mama Lucredzia, Zoe Hunchak of Springfield as Carlotta Devries and Sam Isle of Havertown as Swifty Levine prepare for their performances in “The Dinosaur Musical” August 10-12 at UD Summer Stage. Photo/Cate R. Paxson is located in Drexel Hill at 601 N. Lansdowne Avenue, minutes from the Main Line and Center City. The show is approximately 60 minutes, with no intermission. Parking is free. The show is ideal for ages four and up and free babysitting is offered for siblings who may be too young to sit through the entire show. “The Dinosaur Musical” takes audiences back to a time when carnivores and herbivores shared a common goal – staying alive! As the characters sing, “It Stinks To Be Extinct,” they realize they need to work together to ensure survival and the two groups must come up with a solution. In the meantime a young T-Rex inherits his father’s kingdom facing all of these troubles, plus an active volcano. Through it all, there is singing, dancing and plenty of laughter as some spaghetti-loving dinosaurs seek peace and harmony… and pasta! Director, Amanda Snarski said, “As we prepare for this production, events around the world remind us that the dinosaurs struggling for peaceful survival are not unlike ourselves.” She added, “The characters onstage face challenges as big as achieving peace, but must also find acceptance and love among one another. These messages are timeless, but will resonate even more in light of the struggles facing us in our country and in our world right now.” A Summer Stage show is a unique experience. Young audience members are invited to come early to performances to participate in fun pre-show activities and stay after the show to meet cast members.

op Counseling Schools (TCS), an organization that ranks the best college programs in the field of counseling, has named the Neumann University master’s degree in Pastoral Clinical Mental Health Counseling as the top value master’s degree for counseling in Pennsylvania. The ranking was created by identifying counseling programs in Pennsylvania that are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs (CACREP). TCS then ranked the schools based on their program completion rate, job placement rate, licensing exam pass rate, accreditation length, research productivity, and tuition and fees. According to TCS, “Neumann’s M.S. in Pastoral Clinical Mental Health Counseling is easily one of the top counseling master’s degrees in the country, presenting a masterful blend of social psychology and spiritual doctrine to ambitious students at a competitive price point. This program benefits from accreditation from CACREP” and is also a member of the Atlantic Region of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors. TCS notes that this combination of affiliations “opens the doors to an enormous range in career opportunities in both secular and religious institutions.” Read the full article here: http://www.topcounselingschools.org/masters/in/pennsylPACIFIC OCEAN (July 17, 2016) – U.S. Naval Academy Midshipman 3rd vania/. he Philly Roller Derby will host “Blood for Life” the nation’s largest roller derby blood drive series in partnership with Brown Paper Tickets and the American Red Cross, following the humanitarian organization’s report of a critical blood shortage and an emergency appeal for donors. Athletes will roll into the Blood for Life event in uniform, offering photo opportunities, autographs, roller skate buttons and temporary tattoos to attract more donors than the average community service event. The Philly Roller Derby Blood for Life event will be Sunday, August 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Roxborough Memorial Hospital, 5800 Ridge Ave., 1st floor auditorium. Convenient appointments to donate blood at the event are available by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS or visiting www.redcrossblood.org and entering sponsor code DERBY. The first 10 donors to sign up for an appointment to donate blood at this event will receive a special roller derby themed cookie at the time of their donation. “Summer is always one of the most difficult times for the Red Cross to collect blood, but this year the need is even more urgent than in the past,” said Hanna Malak, representative for the American Red Cross. “The Blood for Life roller derby blood drives create a fantastic atmosphere, with roller derby athletes skating in uniform, refreshments, giveaways and an all-around good time that may really make a difference to ensure that blood is available for patients in need.” “Community service is written in the charter of every roller derby league across the globe,” said Jerry Seltzer, son of the man who invented the sport of roller derby nearly 81 years ago and a former executive vice president for Ticketmaster who now works with Brown Paper Tickets, a Not-Just-for-Profit event company that serves as the largest ticketing portal for roller derby events worldwide. “Partnering roller derby leagues with Brown Paper Tickets and the American Red Cross is a match made in community service heaven.” More Blood for Life roller derby blood drives are being announced weekly from coast to coast; for the most up-todate list of locations, dates and times, go to http://community.brownpapertickets.com/wp/coast-to-coast-rollerderby-blood-drives-kick-off/. F RIENDS ’ C ENTRAL C ULTURAL I MMERSION T RIP TO P ERU Continued from front page

This is the eighth trip for faculty member Cristina Perez, who began the program in 2002 after taking a summer to formulate what this trip would look like in order for students to get as much out of it as possible. Perez explained, “Friends’ Central gave me a summer stipend in 2000 to scope it out— to visit Peru and see which city would be safest, which service opportunity would be the most meaningful, which Spanish school would be best, and where we would find good homestay families. Cuzco had all of those things in spades.” For two weeks, FCS students in Cuzco participated in community service for two hours a day at La Clinica de San Juan de Dios—performing tasks like helping in the kitchen with food prep, organizing piles of donations to remove those that had expired, and working closely with children, which is what this year’s group was involved in the most. Carolyn Spellacy and Olivia Comstock wrote about their experiences working with the children in the clinic and orphanage, “Playing with the children was one of the most direct ways of feeling that you were helping out. The children covered a wide range of ages, and most had disabilities that placed them in wheelchairs and/or limited their ability to speak. We spent the first hour playing with them, figuring out ways to make them laugh and smile. We spent the second hour helping to feed them lunch, clean up, and prepare the kids for the afternoon. The time we spent at the clinic was very rewarding— just knowing that we were helping people.” Every afternoon, FCS students had four hours of Spanish school, then they went back to their host family’s home for dinner. Samantha Roshkoff and Claire Coss said, “Every morning, our host mom greets us with a cheerful ‘¡Buenos dias chicas!’ and a delicious breakfast. She’s so careful about what we are able to eat, and she always helps us stay hydrated throughout the day with her many cups of tea and homemade juices. Every time we walk into our kitchen at the end of the day, we are always greeted with a big smile and ‘¡Hola mis amigas!’ from Yaquito, the two-year-old boy in our host family. He never fails to put a smile on our faces. Dinners are always fun and filled with laughter, while talking to Yaquito’s grandmother and great grandmother about Peruvian culture and their large and interesting family. We’re so happy that we’ve gotten to experience the culture by living with a family we didn’t even know two weeks ago.” The culmination of their trip, a four-day hike of the Inca Trail, is a feat that is physically demanding even for the most athletic individuals but one that comes with a huge reward. The group began the hike with two grueling days of climbing – going up to 14,000 feet and adjusting as well as possible to the significant increase in altitude. Ethan Broaddus

commented, “The first three days were the longest of our journey, and the first two were the most difficult. The first part of the hike was flat, but soon we started to go uphill. The trail became difficult when we had to climb steep stairs for two hours straight. After nine hours of hiking uphill, we arrived at the first campsite. Even though the Inca Trail was very hard, it was an incredible experience.” Perez believes that this challenge is a significant part of the trip. “That physical aspect, that challenge, is such a huge part of this trip—so important and valuable for the experience,” Perez shared. Day three brought them to Wiñay Wayna (Quechua for “forever young”), which is the last overnight camping site for those hiking the Inca Trail. Perez spoke about the feeling experienced by students once they’d reached that point. “Our students were in awe of the whole Machu Picchu trail, and the most powerful experience for most of them was when we’d camped at Wiñay Wayna on the third night. We had a Meeting for Worship as the sun was setting, and almost every student, as well as our guide Saul (who had never experienced Meeting for Worship), shared in this very moving Meeting. This is when our kids knew they’d gotten through the hardest part of the climb and could really soak it all in and express their thoughts with the group.” Day four of the hike and the final day of their trip began with a 3 a.m. wake-up call and ended with a truly emotional experience for all. Carolyn and Oliva shared, “We walked to the Sun Gate that looks over the city of Machu Picchu in complete silence so we would fully experience our surroundings. As we approached the gate, we had a final set of very steep stone stairs to tackle; however, once we completed those final steps and crossed the gate, the city was in clear sight between the vast mountains. The view was so amazing and breathtaking that it didn’t seem real. Our timing was perfect thanks to our tour guides, for we reached the city exactly at the time the sun was rising over the mountains. We couldn’t be more thankful for the teachers, parents, and Friends’ Central for providing such an experience.” These three weeks take students through an array of emotions and life experiences – from witnessing the beauty and history of the beautiful city of Cuzco to being pushed to their limit physically to feeling the exhilaration of reaching the top of Machu Picchu. Perez explained that these elements and much more make this trip worthwhile for students. “The realization of a different perspective that is humbling, fills them with gratitude, and allows them to see how big our world truly is make this trip incredibly meaningful for our kids,” said Perez.

Students Honor Longtime Employee While Raising Money for Prostate Cancer Research

Body by FISHER Now Board Certified Aesthetic Physician Member of American Society of Bariatric Physicians

Devon Prep Facilities Manager Pat Nattle of Mont Clare, kneeling, with the winners of the Third Annual Batting for Pat Wiffle Ball tournament, from left – Class of 2009 Alumni Jim Gamrat of West Chester, Christian Staub of Pottstown, Ed McNichol of West Chester, and Neil Moerman of Malvern. The tournament benefits prostate cancer research. t was hot and sunny and school was no longer in session, but that didn’t stop Devon Prep students, alumni, parents and friends from participating in the third annual “Batting for Pat” Wiffle Ball Tournament, named for longtime Devon employee Pat Nattle of Mont Clare. The tournament, which took place on Devon Prep’s soccer fields on a recent Saturday morning, raised nearly $5,000 for ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer, (https://zerocancer.org/), a national nonprofit organization which supports research and provides education and support to men and their families.

I

Recent Graduates Andrew Welsh of East Norriton (left) and Sean McGeehan of King of Prussia returned to Devon Prep to participate in the Batting for Pat Wiffle Ball Tournament. Nearly 75 participates played in the tournament which took about three hours to complete. After several heated games of wiffle ball among the teams, “McNick’s Warning Track Power” emerged the winner. They included four Devon Prep Class of 2009 Alumni, James Gamrat of West Chester, Christian Staub of Pottstown, Ed McNichol od West Chester and Neil Moerman of Malvern. Nattle was diagnosed three years ago, at the age of 51, with an aggressive form of prostate cancer. He has undergone treatments off and on since then. He is a favorite among Devon Prep students, always encouraging and helpful to them. After hearing about Nattle’s diagnosis the Student Council decided to show their appreciation and support for him by sponsoring “Batting for Pat.” Since its inception “Batting for Pat” has raised nearly $20,000 for the ZERO organization. “Pat is special to us,” explained Patrick Rohr of Audubon, Devon Prep Freshman Christopher Muth of West Chester gets ready to bat at the “Batting for Pat” Wiffle Ball Tournament benefitting Prostate Cancer Research.

Class of 2015 alumnus and one of the first organizers of the event. “He’s a special part of Devon. He helped us a lot so we want to give something back to him.” “Whatever money is raised may help someone else not have to go through this,” said Nattle, who spent the day helping out where he could, and thanking everyone for coming. “I just hope there will be a cure some day.” Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men and the second leading cause of cancer death among American men. More than 240,000 men each year are affected by the disease. Devon Prep is a private, Catholic, college preparatory school for young men in grades six to 12, conducted by the Piarist Fathers. Devon Prep students hail from Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Bucks counties as well as parts of Philadelphia. The school’s Main Line campus sits on 20 acres on North Valley Forge Road in Devon, PA. For information contact Devon Prep at 610-688-7337 or visit www.devonprep.com or www.facebook.com/devonprep.
