ARTS & CULTURAL EVENTS Cancer Support Community Greater Philadelphia to Host Masked Ball to Honor Survivors and their Families he Cancer Support Community Greater Philadelphia (CSCGP) is hosting a masked ball for this year’s Annual Fundraising Gala at The Lucy, 231 South Broad Street, Philadelphia on Thursday, October 10, at 6:30 p.m. The gala, themed “Unmasking Cancer,” will highlight misconceptions about cancer and some of the things people hide from when it comes to facing the disease. All proceeds support the organization and its mission of ensuring no one faces cancer alone. “In 2018, an estimated 1.7 million new cases of cancer were diagnosed in the United States. Some will be treatable, some will not, but all will affect a person’s life and that of their families and friends,” said CSCGP CEO Kelly Harris, who is also a cancer patient in remission. “The Cancer Support Community Greater Philadelphia believes a strong support community is critical to healing and recovery and has, for the past 25 years, provided free emotional, social and practical support to thousands of people affected by cancer. This gala will help CSCGP continue to fund the organization and programs that make this type of support possible.” The Annual Fundraising Gala aims to enlighten all guests to the helpful support available through CSCGP’s free services and programs that are so critical to cancer patients, caregivers, families and those closest to them. Open to the public, the evening starts at 6:30 p.m. with cocktails and a chance to bid on silent auction items. The awards ceremony, entertainment, dinner, and live auction follow at 7:30 p.m. The evening will also include face painters, singers, unusual performances and heartwarming and courageous stories by families affected by cancer. CSCGP anticipates 300 VIPs, professionals, government officials, celebrities, CSCGP members and others will attend this dinner and awards ceremony. Stephanie Stahl, CBS3 and CW Philly’s Emmy award-winning Health Reporter, will emcee the event. Philly Current Magazine, the region’s newest what’s happening publication, is the exclusive print sponsor. Philly ChitChat Celebrity Photographer Hugh Dillon will be taking photos. This year’s “Unmasking Cancer” Gala will be co-chaired by Robin Halpren and Nicole Dresnin Schaeffer, two long time champions of CSCGP. The Morgan Family is the Presenting Sponsor. Honorees for the evening include: • Marianne Dean, well known Main Line resident who initially was a founder of CSCGP will receive the Inspiration Award. This award is given to a corporation, foundation or individual for exemplary efforts to help people with cancer and their loved ones to improve the quality of their lives by providing better resources for them. • Joshua Sowden and Family who are clients of CSCGP will receive the Gilda’s Radner Award. This award is given to an individual or family currently in treatment who is facing his or her cancer journey with the same strength, humor, and commitment to others that Gilda Radner exhibited. When Gilda spoke of the “wonderful, warm-hearted people” who “make all the difference in our lives,” she meant people like these. • Dr. Hossein Borghaei of Fox Chase Cancer Center, Dr. Cory Langer of Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Dr. Ralph Zinner of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital will all be receiving the Innovation Award due to their development and implementation of The Thoracic Cancer Symposium, a cutting-edge program that has benefitted many cancer patients. For information, to become a sponsor or to purchase tickets go to (www.cancersupportphiladelphia.org/gala/) or contact Kathy O’Mara at 267-218-3325 or by email at Kathy@cancersupportphiladelphia.org. Community Supports Children Working Hard to Find Their Voices The Walk for Apraxia® celebrates children with apraxia of speech and recognizes them for their hard work. he 2019 Philadelphia Walk for Apraxia® event will be held September 21, 2019 at the Fort Washington State Park to benefit children with apraxia of speech. Registration begins at 10 a.m. with the Walk beginning at 11 a.m. Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a motor speech disorder that makes it difficult for children to speak. Children with the diagnosis of apraxia of speech generally have a good understanding of language and know what they want to say. However, they have difficulty learning or carrying out the complex sequenced movements that are necessary for intelligible speech. The Walk for Apraxia is held across the country as a means to heighten awareness and raise funding in the hopes that all children with apraxia may have access to the support they need to find their voices. The Walk is open to all adults and children. Proceeds from the Walk for Apraxia benefit the mission of Apraxia Kids. “The Walk celebrates children with CAS by setting up a space with all their supporters, and organizing a crazy fun, carefree

T

day,” said Walk Coordinator Maya Jennings. “The Walk is a safe space where these kids feel uplifted, because everyone there, parents, SLPs, researchers, speech students, etc., is completely dedicated to their successes and aware of their path. Walk day serves as something to come back to year-round, at good times and bad: on Walk day, these kids see themselves represented in the faces of other kids their age, and are acknowledged for the enormous effort they put in just being themselves.” Raising awareness is one of the most tangible ways that communities at large can help children with apraxia thrive. Collective increased awareness means that children will be diagnosed faster, resulting in better, earlier intervention. Anyone interested in covering this event or the story of the Walk Coordinator can contact jenningsmaya29@gmail.com or visit the event website at www.community.apraxia-kids.org/philadelphiawalk.

sound like a full orchestra? Just ask Peter Nocella! He is the composer-in-residence and violist of the Philadelphia based Meiravi Quartet, who has magically arranged a lively West Side Story for the Meiravi Quartet’s Saturday, September 21, 7:30 p.m. concert at the Wayne Presbyterian Church at Lancaster and Wayne Avenues in Wayne. Admission is free to the public. Along with Leonard Bernstein’s exuberant musical medley, the Meiravi Quartet will premiere Nocella’s String Quartet No. 5, “Summer Journal,” as well as the spirited String Quartet No. 1, by Russian composer, Rheinhold Gliere, providing the Quartet’s concert this Fall a romantic yet contemporary sound. With a chilling contrast, however, the program will also include Grynszpan: Act I Prelude, expressing the darker undercurrent of Nocella’s opera-inprogress, the backstory of Krystallnacht. The members of the Philadelphia-based Meiravi Quartet – Peter Nocella, Igor Szwec, Gregory Teperman, and Vivian Barton Dozor – have impressive individual resumes and performance backgrounds, which they each bring enthusiastically to the ensemble, contributing to the Meiravi’s vibrant sound and rich musicality. Each member has both outstanding international as well as local credentials. Longtime friends and colleagues, collectively the Quartet members have performed under the batons of such world class conductors as Leopold Stokowski, Lorin Maazel, Ricardo Muti, Charles Dutoit, Yehudi Menhuin, JoAnn Falletta, and Ignat Solzhenitsyn. Nocella, a Main Line resident for the last 30 years, grew up in South Philadelphia where South Philadelphia High School’s Music Department could boast of floor to ceiling classical musical scores, and college level music training in composition and music theory, to which Nocella took full advantage. The former music director and conductor for the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, Nocella himself has performed with, and has also written for Pennsylvania Ballet, Baryshnikov at American Ballet Theater, Swedish State Theater Ballet, Malmo, as well as written for the Philadelphia Concerto Soloists and the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra. Nocella has also written numerous commissioned works, including in 2000, his choral work, Missa Brevis, performed at the Vatican for Pope John Paul II, which celebrated 11 martyred nuns who sacrificed their lives to save a Polish town from annihilation during the Nazi occupation. In 2001, Eight Candles in the Darkness was commissioned for the 75th anniversary of the American Swedish Museum in Philadelphia, a tribute to eight famous Swedes and Swedish Americans. Rose Tree Concerto by The Commissioning Project of Rochester, New York followed in 2003. Between 2005-7, Nocella composed three orchestral tone poems: War Prelude, A Romance on Viola Street and the Ninth Street Overture, the latter two, celebrating Nocella’s South Philadelphia roots. After completing a commission by the Nazareth Chorale, Psalm 98, in 2008, he then in 2009-10, finished his Symphony No. 2 and Symphony No. 3. His Quartet Color Series, Blue (2010), Red (2011), Green (2013), were premiered by the Meiravi Quartet, as was Quartet No. 4, “Winter Journal” (2014). As a performer, Nocella has worked with numerous artists from Burt Bacharach, Smokey Robinson, Natalie Cole and all of the Sinatras, to Pavarotti, Carreras, the Stylistics, The Four Tops, Justin Timberlake, and Jennifer Lopez, Celebrating Walt Whitman’s 200th anniversary this past Spring, Nocella premiered a Philadelphia tribute to Whitman’s little known poem, Wood Odors, found in a Glendale, California attic, and set to music for the anniversary and premiere with the Nazareth Academy Chorale. Currently Nocella is working on an opera, Grynszpan, the back story of Krystallnacht. For many years, Nocella was also a faculty member at Stockton College, Penn State Abington, and Nazareth Academy. His music is also included in the Edwin A. Fleisher Orchestral Music Collection at the Philadelphia Free Library. For information, visit https://waynepres.org/music or call 610-688-8700.
