David Gregory to Speak at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church and a faith journal about lessons on belief. Brought up by a Catholic mother and a Jewish father, he has always had a strong sense of his Jewish cultural and ethnic identity. His book is the result of his spiritual quest in search of a religious identity, a search that began with his marriage to a Protestant woman of strong faith. His spiritual journey – while always asking the difficult questions that were a hallmark of his success as a journalist – has taken him into the heart of both Christianity and Orthodox Judaism. Gregory has had a distinguished career in television journalism, having most recently moderated Meet the Press. He joined NBC News in 1995 and was the substitute and co-anchor of Weekend Today. He filled in for Matt Lauer as a co-host of the Today Show from 1998-2000 and NBC’s Weekend Nightly News and Nightly News from 2005-2014. Talent Runs in the Merion Mercy Family On Sunday, September 27, Pope Francis will celebrate the closing Mass for the World Meeting of Families 2015. The Mass will be held outside of the Philadelphia Art Museum and is open to the public. Music will be an important part of the Mass and thus the Papal Choir was assembled. Music Director David Kimock says, “Music is so essential be cause it really becomes the corporate voice of the congregation. It enables the people’s prayer to be heard and felt.” Several choirs (composed of handpicked choir members) will be part of the 500 voice group called the Papal Choir. Three of the voices are from the Merion Mercy Academy community: current parent and substitute English teacher Carol Restifo of Bryn Mawr (center), sophomore Jillian Zupito of Blackwood, NJ (left), and senior Meaghan Rossi of Philadelphia (right). An added fun fact: Meaghan is Jillian’s MMA big sister. Talent really does run in the family!

Pedestrian Entrance Welcomes Schuylkill River Trail Users to Laurel Hill Laurel Hill Cemetery’s “park-like” atmosphere with rolling hills of history will become accessible to thousands of cyclists, runners and walkers via a new pedestrian entrance aurel Hill Cemetery will host a Grand Opening Celebration for its new pedestrian entrance from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 19. The Grand Opening will start at noon sharp with special guests and one-of-a-kind performances by Invisible River. The afternoon will be filled with activities including walking tours, nature activities, photo ops, and refreshments. The event is free and open to the public. Laurel Hill is going back to its roots in an expansive way. When Laurel Hill Cemetery was first founded, it was common for visitors and lot owners to take a steamboat up the Schuylkill River, disembark at the river’s edge across from the Entrance Project (the steps that go to the river are still there). Patrons would then walk on foot or take a horse-drawn carriage ride up to the grounds. Picnicking and using the grounds for socializing was the rule, not the exception; they had nearly 30,000 people a year visiting in the 1840s. The new entrance will provide improved access to one of Philadelphia’s most celebrated outdoor spaces. Located on the western edge of Laurel Hill’s 78 acres at the intersection of Hunting Park Avenue and Kelly Drive, the Pedestrian Access Restoration Project, often referred to as the “Entrance Project,” is the largest undertaking the cemetery has taken on in the last century. Fueled by the renaissance Laurel Hill has experienced in recent years, the new entrance will serve as a physical gateway to the Cemetery’s grounds, but just as important, it will serve as an intellectual gateway to Laurel Hill’s history, programs and tours. Laurel Hill Cemetery launched its Pedestrian Access Restoration Project in May of 2015 after years of planning. The project includes a pedestrian crosswalk at the intersection of Kelly Drive and Hunting Park Avenue which will connect trail users to the new entrance at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Visitors will be welcomed to Laurel Hill by bike racks, benches and informative signage at the foot of the entrance. Visitors will enter Laurel Hill’s grounds through a gateway, which includes bike stairs. Laurel Hill’s grounds are open daily until 4:30 p.m., free of charge. Once on site, roadways and pedestrian paths provide visitors access to the Cemetery’s lush landscapes, magnificent architectural pieces, and unique vantage points of the city. Major support for the Laurel Hill entrance project has been provided by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage, with additional support from the William Penn Foundation, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and Bill and Laura Buck. The entrance project is being managed by Paul Vernon and Philip Scott of KSK Architects Planners Historians, Inc. with Knapp Masonry serving as the general contractor. The Laurel Hill Cemetery entrance project was developed in collaboration with the Philadelphia Department of Parks and Recreation. The cemetery is located at 3822 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19132. Visit www.thelaurelhillcemetery.org.

Tesla Quartet to Perform at Neumann University

The Tesla Quartet will perform in concert for free at Neumann University on September 29. he Tesla Quartet will perform at Neumann University on Tuesday, September 29, at 7 p.m. The concert, scheduled for the Sacred Heart Chapel in Bachmann Main Building, will include Haydn’s Quartet in F minor, Shaw’s Punctum & Valencia, and Dvorak’s String Quartet in A flat major. The performance is free and open to the public. Dubbed “technically superb” by The Strad, the Tesla Quartet has garnered top prizes at numerous international competitions, including the Gold Medal at the 2012 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, Third Prize at the 6th International Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Competition in Vienna, and Third Prize at the 2012 London International String Quartet Competition.

T

The quartet was formed at The Juilliard School in 2008 and quickly established itself as one of the most promising young ensembles in New York, winning Second Prize at the J.C. Arriaga Chamber Music Competition only a few months after its inception. The London Evening Standard called their rendition of the Debussy Quartet “a subtly coloured performance that balanced confidently between intimacy and extraversion.” From 2009 to 2012 the quartet held a fellowship as the Graduate String Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Colorado-Boulder, where they studied with the world-renowned Takács Quartet. The group has performed in Austria, Canada, England and France. American appearances include concerts in Alabama, California, Kansas, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania,

and Vermont. Members of the ensemble are Edwin Kaplan (viola), Michelle Lie (violin), Serafim Smigelskiy (cello), and Ross Snyder (violin). Community involvement and outreach are integral parts of the Tesla Quartet’s mission, and the group has brought inspiring music to children’s hospitals, soup kitchens, libraries, retirement communities, and schools. The ensemble also spent three years in partnership with the Aspen Music Festival’s Musical Odysseys Reaching Everyone program, providing lessons, master classes, workshops, and performances for young string players in Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley.

Ethical Society Celebrates International Day of Peace September 20 and 21 n honor of Peace Day Philly 2015, the Ethical Humanist Society of Philadelphia will offer three programs as inspiration for growing peace within and in the world. All events take place at 1906 Rittenhouse Square (SW corner). On the eve of the United Nations’ International Day of Peace, Hugh Taft-Morales, Clergy Leader, explores what it will take to bring lasting peace to the planet at 11 a.m., Sunday, September 20. While grateful for the energy and time diplomats and strategists contribute to contain violence, he wonders if such efforts will fail without a radical change of perspective on the part of most of the human race. From a humanist perspective, the recent Encyclical Letter of Pope Francis, “Our Common Home,” can be instructive. It emphasizes the fundamental interrelatedness of all of nature and society. War, greed, and exploitation feed off each other. To build peace, we need sustainability and justice. All are welcome for the talk and dialogue. For information contact the Society at office@phillyethics.org or 215-735-3456 or visit the EHSoP website at www.phillyethics.org. Free street parking by permit available on arrival. “Nurturing the Activist Within and Relationships Beyond: An Interfaith Peace Celebration + Dialogue,” will take place from 2:00 - 4:30 p.m., Sunday, September 20, and is co-sponsored by the Interfaith Walk for Peace and Reconciliation,

This program offers an opportunity to build the community, networking, and inspiration necessary to grow peace within and in the world as well as a chance to learn about other peace groups in Philadelphia. All are welcome to join for music, poetry, personal stories, refreshments, and dialogue to nurture the activist within. On Monday, September 21, at 6:15 p.m., “The Fifth Annual Peace Day Philly Sing-Along” will offer an opportunity for all to celebrate the United Nations International Peace Day outside of the Ethical Humanist Society of Philadelphia where Hugh Taft-Morales, Leader of the Ethical Humanist Society, along with families, musicians, the Granny Peace Brigade and other peace organizations, will sing out songs of peace. The program will include some participatory Dances for Universal Peace. The event will conclude around 7:15 p.m. with a silent candlelight walk around Rittenhouse Square. One first grade class got right to work; each student drew a picture of something representing who they are on a puzzle piece and wrote a description. First grader Dash Mosley wrote, “I drew a map of my classroom because I love school. Classmate Elias Greenwald drew his family and shared, “I really like my family and my siblings and my two dogs. Other students showed their favorite color or a sport that they enjoy. Through this project, first grade teacher Jen Laken-Shirk introduced the idea of community to her class. “Like the pieces of the puzzle, each student is special in their own way, and when we come together we form a greater community full of learners, artists, mathematicians, scientist and so much more. The puzzle is on display in the hall, under the heading “Our Community: We fit together like pieces of a puzzle.

Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival’s Pre-Fest October 10-12 he Gershman Y announces the Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival’s three-day Pre-Fest on October 10 through 12, with screenings in both Center City and the suburbs. The weekend features four films, all showcasing compelling stories about survival and the power of the will to live. This theme is further explored in greater depth at the two-week Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival, running November 7 through 21. Tickets to the Pre-Fest films are $10 each and are available at www.pjff.org or by calling 215-545-4400. The Pre-Fest kicks off on Saturday, October 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Gershman Y with the riveting and fast-paced docudrama “Sabena Hijacking – My Version” recounting the hijacking of the Brussels-to-Tel Aviv Sabena flight 571 in 1972 by four armed Palestinian “Black September” terrorists. Based on Sabena pilot Reginald Levy’s first-person account as well as the testimony of several passengers who survived the harrowing ordeal, this finalist for the 2015 Ophir Awards (Israeli Academy Awards) presents a compelling cinematic reenactment of the events, weaving genuine archival material and exclusive interviews with three revered Israeli political leaders who were in charge of the rescue effort at the time. Pre-Fest heads out to the suburbs on Sunday with “Brundibar Revisited” on October 11 at 1 p.m. at Temple Sinai. During World War II, performances of the children’s opera “Brundibar” by Jewish children in the Theresienstadt concentration camp were exploited as propaganda by the Nazis. This touching documentary follows contemporary performances of the opera as reinterpreted by the Berlin-based youth theater group Die Zwiefachen, made up of a ragtag team of amateur actors living on the fringes of society. While rehearsing the allegory of the struggle against evil, the children are confronted, many for the first time, with the legacy of Nazi Germany and what it means to be a young 21st century German in a country with such a complex and tumultuous past. Their experience performing Brundibar really comes full circle after meeting and spending time with the charismatic Greta Klingsberg, a survivor of Theresienstadt, who had been cast as the lead actor in the original production of “Brundibar” decades earlier. The evening film “To Life: Aus Das Leben!” will be presented in partnership with Congregation Beth Or (Maple Glen, PA) and will be screened in the synagogue on Sunday, October 11 at 7:30 p.m. “To Life: Aus Das Leben!” tells the story of Ruth, a retired Yiddish cabaret singer and Johan, the young German laborer who is hired to move her into a retirement complex. Bearing a strong resemblance to someone Ruth used to know, Johan brings back vivid memories for Ruth, memories that are still painful to recall. In turn, there is something about Ruth that intrigues Johan and piques his curiosity. After an incident which could have ended very badly for Ruth if not for Johan’s intervention, the two develop a powerful bond that gradually changes the way both see their future. The Pre-Fest concludes on Monday, October 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Gershman Y with the deeply moving and inspirational film “Imber’s Left Hand” documenting the final months of a Jewish painter stricken with ALS who refuses to give up what he loves regardless of his physical limitations. Even as the degenerative condition progresses, he paints over 100 illustrative portraits of friends and family over several months, all the while keeping his wits and wicked sense of humor about him. Preceding the film, from 5:30 - 7 p.m., will be a free exhibition of 24 illustrated film posters created by PJFF intern Kathleen Kazmier, a Senior Illustration major at Moore College of Art, during her summer internship at the Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival. The exhibition will take place in the Foyer, which is adjacent to the Levitt Auditorium on the 3rd Floor of The Gershman Y. The Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival, to be held November 7 through November 21, is a signature program of the Gershman Y. Celebrating its 35th Anniversary season as the second longest-running series of its kind in the United States and Philadelphia’s first film festival, PJFF aims to use film as a vehicle for exploring Jewish values, culture and community. This year’s Festival presents 21 feature-length films plus additional shorts from nine countries around the world. In its 35-year history, the critically-acclaimed PJFF has presented over 500 international films that highlight the diversity and commonality of the human experience, bringing together audiences with different perspectives and ideologies to explore universal themes and values that deepen our understanding of ourselves and society at large. Curated by Main Line Art Center Executive Director Amie Potsic, “Modern Utopias” presents compelling visions of modern existence, human potential, and virtual realities through works by Marjan Moghaddam (New York, NY), Noah Addis (Columbus, OH), and Nicole Patrice Dul (Philadelphia, PA). The Art Center will host an Artist Talk & Opening Reception on Friday, September 18 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., and Artist Nicole Patrice Dul will present a two-day workshop on her process, Solarplate Etching, on Tuesday, September 29 and October 6 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Beginning September 12, anyone, regardless of age or experience, can contribute to the “Panorama” virtual exhibition featuring cash prizes, which will be available on Main Line Art Center’s newly redesigned website in December. Community members are encouraged to create digital artwork documenting what utopia means to them, and then upload their digital photograph or video to www.mainlineart.org. Finally, virtual and hands-on collide at Main Line Art Center on Saturday, October 24 from 5 to 9 p.m. for the high-energy “Panorama” Festival featuring music and entertainment, food trucks, live art experiences, innovative art-making, digital demos, and more. Artist Tim Portlock will light up the night with a presentation of site-specific work, kicking-off the Center’s new Digital Artist in Residency Program. Main Line Art Center is located at 746 Panmure Road in Haverford, behind the Wilkie Lexus dealership just off of Lancaster Avenue. The Art Center is easily accessible from public transportation and offers abundant free parking. Nicholson Baker will read from his work at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30, in the Goodhart Hall Music Room. reading by Nicholson Baker opens the Bryn Mawr College 2015-2016 Creative Writing Program Reading Series. Readings are held in the Music Room at Goodhart Hall located at 150 North Merion Avenue in Bryn Mawr, PA on the campus of Bryn Mawr College. Nicholson Baker is the author of ten novels and five books of nonfiction, including Double Fold: Libraries and the Assault on Paper, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award. Writing in The New York Review of Books, critic Michael Dirda says, “Baker [is] a stunning writer…there is iron in his sentences as well as gold and filigree, there are shouts of warning, cries of dissent.” A frequent contributor to The New Yorker and the winner of the 2014 International Hermann Hesse Prize, Baker’s most recent novel is Traveling Sprinkler, a sequel to his 2009 bestseller The Anthologist.
