he Stagecrafters theater in Chestnut Hill opened its 2013-2014 season on Friday, September 13 with the production of Tracy Letts’ gripping comedy-drama, “Superior Donuts.” As the action commences, we meet Arthur Przybyszewski, an aging hippie running a down-at-the-heels donut shop in Chicago’s Uptown section, disconnected from his family and barely making ends meet, struggling just to show up every morning to make the coffee and donuts. But his life changes big time when Franco Wicks, a young, energetic and enthusiastic would-be writer, shows up to work there, itching to show Arthur a thing or two about fixing his business. Letts deftly weaves a story of human hopes, failures, and triumphs that unfolds with poignancy and humor, which draws you in before you even realize it, and holds you there until the final riveting climax. Tracy Letts (b. 1965), the playwright who received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and multiple awards for his seminal “August: Osage County” in 2008, has for many years been a prime mover of Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company. ety of the U.S. (TAFSUS), Turks @ Penn, the American Research Center in Turkey (ARIT) and the Middle East Center at the University of Pennsylvania. No Turkish Day would be complete without belly dancing, and the Penn student group Penn Yalla promises to shake things up—with an open Belly Dance Workshop at 1:30 p.m. At 1:00 p.m. and again at 3:30 p.m., the Turquoise Turkish Folk Dance Group from Penn State University performs traditional Turkish dances—and invites the audience to join in. Turkey has a magnificent past, and contains archaeological sites of more than a dozen successive civilizations spanning 10,000 years. Dr. C. Brian Rose, Penn Museum curator and excavation director at the famous archaeological site of Gordion, Turkey – where Alexander the Great is said to have cut the Gordion knot, and King Midas to have met his end – is just back from a 2013 season at the site. He will share what he and his colleagues have recently learned at a 2:00 p.m. talk. Mr. Halil Demirdelen, Deputy Director of the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, Ankara, offers an interactive table to explore more about the rich archaeology of Turkey, throughout the afternoon. The Republic of Turkey was founded in October of 1923, as the once great Ottoman Empire, weakened by World War I, came to an end. At 2:45 p.m., Dr. Mehmet Darakcioglu, Associated Director of Penn’s Middle East Center, and Wharton senior Naz Özbek offer insights and perspective at a short panel discussion that focuses on “Democracy in Turkey Today.” Kids of all ages can stop by at an open crafts table, where they can create a whirling Turkish dancer – using paper plates, marshmallows and craft sticks – to play with and take home. Turkish food is yet another delight included in the day. The Museum’s Pepper Mill Café features Turkish cuisine on its menu, as well as other family-friendly foods and snacks. One more delight! Visitors can try a free sample of Turkish delight, a popular sweet enjoyed in Turkey and around the world—while supplies last! The Penn Museum (the University of Pennsylvania Museum

Immaculata University Launches Anti-Bullying Campaign mmaculata University (IU) is launching a campaign to join in the national fight against bullying. Mac, the University’s mascot, is spreading the important message: Speak up, Be Mighty, – if you see it or hear it, report it. IU’s anti-bullying campaign is geared toward IU students but is applicable to people of all ages off campus as well. Immaculata has created a website http://www.immaculata.edu/speakup with tips for recognizing if you, a friend or a family member may be a victim of bullying or if you, yourself, are participating in bullying behavior. The website also provides numerous resources, both on-campus and off, for putting an end to bullying. IU is using Mac, Immaculata’s mascot, as the face of the campaign. Mac makes the anti-bullying message accessible by being an identifiable University symbol. Immaculata hopes that other schools, organizations, and businesses will use their own mascots to spread the word about the dangers of bullying. Visit www.immaculata.edu/speakup/downloads/ to join Mac in this important campaign in your own place of business. Various types of bullying occur every day in grade schools,
I
high schools and universities, on sports teams, in the workplace, and online. The goal of Immaculata’s Speak Up, Be Mighty anti-bullying campaign is to raise awareness, identify the many situations and ways in which someone may be bullied, and equip students and the public with the tools and resources to cope with and put an end to bullying. “Bullying impacts us all either directly through our own experiences or indirectly through the impact on [those around us.] Bullying disrupts our sense of comfort and security,” commented Maria Cuddy-Casey, Ph.D., associate professor of Psychology at Immaculata. “Immaculata has taken a stand against bullying behavior in order to protect our culture of caring for each member of the IU community. Please join me in embracing this culture of caring and support one another with kind words. Speak out against bullying…be mighty …stop bullying!” Immaculata University is a Catholic, comprehensive, coeducational institution of higher education, located on the Main Line between Malvern and Exton, 20 miles west of Philadelphia.

Free Legal Workshop and Clinic for LGBT Older Adults o provide lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) older adults in the Delaware Valley with information about legal issues faced regarding estate and life-care planning, a free legal workshop and clinic will be held Saturday, September 28, 2013, at William Way LGBT Community Center in Philadelphia, PA. The workshop/clinic, which begins at 11:00 a.m., is sponsored by the all-volunteer LGBT Elder Initiative (LGBTEI) and a coalition of legal service providers and community organizations. The event, including preparation of legal documents, is free and open to the public but pre-registration is required. “LGBT people face specific and unique legal issues with regard to estate and life-care planning,” said Heshie Zinman, chair of the Elder Initiative. The LGBTEI fosters and advocates for services, resources and institutions that are competent, culturally sensitive, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of LGBT elders. Zinman adds that it is estimated that over 30 percent of LGBT older adults do not have appropriate legal documentation in place. For LGBT people these documents are especially important because the law does not recognize relationships with partners, family or friends in the same way as for heterosexual people. Without legally executed documentation the
T
wishes of an incapacitated or deceased person who is LGBT may be disregarded or contested. A brief workshop will be held before the Clinic. The workshop will outline the necessity of documents and which documents will protect the interests of LGBT elders and their loved ones. These documents include Wills, Living Wills, Financial and Medical Powers-of-Attorney, and Disposition of Remains. In order to have these documents completed with the help of an attorney, pre-registration is required. To register or receive additional information, please e-mail your name and telephone number to info@lgbtei.org or call 267-546-3448. The LGBTEI Legal Clinic is free and open to the public. It will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the William Way Community Center, 1315 Spruce St., Philadelphia. Lunch will be provided. All legal professionals involved are donating their time on a volunteer basis. The LGBT Elder Initiative was founded in 2010 and hosts educational events, disseminates information to the LGBT community and provides cultural competency training to providers in the health and aging services networks. Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who are the driving force behind Teen Cancer America. After over two decades working with Teenage Cancer Trust in the UK, the duo decided to bring their passion across the pond and make a difference in the lives of teens and young adults with cancer in the United States. The organization partners with hospitals to create youth-oriented centers for teens receiving treatment. Many teens with cancer end up in a hospital with no peers. They’re either treated in a pediatric facility alongside young children or in an adult hospital among much older people. Either situation leaves them feeling isolated and scared. Teen Cancer America helps hospitals develop care units designed to meet the specific needs of teens with cancer, giving them the very Hemophilia Charity 5K Run best chance of a positive outcome both physically and emotionally. For information, visit On Saturday, September 28, the Delaware Valley Chapter of the NHF will be holding the fourth annual www.teencanceramerica.org. Hemophilia 5K Run and Family Walk on Pfizer’s Collegeville campus (500 Arcola Rd, Collegeville, PA 19426) to raise funds and awareness about hemophilia and other bleeding and clotting disorders. Donations raised during the walk will stay local and benefit the Delaware Valley Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF). The event begins at 9:00 a.m. The kids run will begin at 8:45 a.m. and registration will open 7:30 a.m. For info, call 212-601-8128.
