What is PROSPERIANS ? In the CityU Student Residence community, or inside HSBC Prosperity Hall, you may often heard of this word “Prosperians”. Actually, do you know what is “Prosperians” ? Prosperians can be abstract. It may refer to an identity. As we are all living in the HSBC Prosperity Hall, we call ourselves Prosperians. It represents a sense of belongings to the Hall. We treat the Hall as our home and we share a strong sense of pride as Prosperians. Prosperians can be concrete. Just like the English name of this annual magazine is also called Prosperians. The intention of producing the annual magazine is to familiarize Prosperians with the history, culture and recent developments of the Prosperity Hall. It provides a medium for current prosperians to recall their treasured memories and for new residents to experience the warmth and honor of living in the Prosperity Hall.

Reeve It’s been the second year for me to be on the editorial board. I’ve never been one of those people who loves to read and write but the strange thing about working this annual magazine is that, it induces you to reflect why you do what you do at the first place. Very often when we are studying at college, we lost ourselves. We forgot why we are doing this and that. We forgot who we are, who we wish to be, because most of the time we are told to be the one people expect us to be. Working on this annual magazine really gives me time to think, not just following orders. I really appreciate this opportunity.

Jacky I can say that making this magazine do needs a lot of effort from many people. From how the ideas popped out to how the ideas are arranged and presented, these take plenty of time. Working with other editors let me know more about how the others think about this hall, which was quite a momentous experience to me. I hope everyone especially the Prosperians will not only seek information from the magazine, but also take the initiative to know more about the culture of HSBC Prosperity Hall.

Maegan At the very beginning, I have never thought of getting involved in the annual magazine production, or I should say I didn’t expect that a hall would have it’s own magazine. I have a passion towards published media since I was young, and I am very glad that my past experience helped a bit this time. It has been a lot of hardwork from brainstorming to the final product. I am very proud to be part of the team and I hope you enjoy reading the magazine and being a prosperian.

Year moved to HK: 2004 Religion: Christian

Teenage hobbies If you have met Kevin on the ground floor, you probably would have seen him playing the guitar in the hall band. He also goes to the gym quite often. Can you imagine what he liked when he was in his adolescence? He played rugby and weightlifting! At the age of 17 or 18, Kevin started playing rugby. He played for the Exeter Saracens. But in fact he preferred weightlifting more, thereby decided to give up rugby to concentrate on weightlifting. “Weightlifting is easier in some ways, as the winter in the UK can get really cold, the older I got, the more I prefer being in a warm gym exercising, getting ready for the match, rather than actually playing rugby.” He lifted for Devon (Exeter, Kevin’s hometown, is a city in Devon), and the southwest of England, and twice for the England 18. In addition to that, he was once the UAU (university athletic union) British student champion!

University life – learning and teaching Kevin had his degree in the Open University in the UK. He recalled the beautiful campus in those days. He used to feed the ducks in the pond at lunchtime, sit under the sunshine on a blanket eating his sandwiches and peeling the crust of the bread to feed the ducks. It was a very quiet and peaceful way to spend time. Then he had his master degree and PHD finished in the University of Exeter. Having been educated in the UK for more than 20 years, he faced totally different learning and teaching environment when he came to CityU. Comparing his with Kristina’s learning experience in Korea, they concluded that HK is halfway between UK and Korea. Korean students respect their teachers and they do not dare to ask a question; whereas British students express their thoughts freely. Despite not teaching anymore, Kevin treasures the time spent interacting with young people, especially all the residents in our hall, so when you see Kevin and Kristina, do not hesitate to chitchat with them!

Working in the prison Kevin worked as a probation officer before he started his academic work. Looking back at his work experience, he came up with something very unique and intriguing – working in the prison. Romania – He worked in the Romanian prisons for two years. He was working for the ministry of justice on an international development project funded by the University of Exeter. He was there to introduce the bail system (a suspect can be released from the bars before their trail). At the time he went to Romania, they did not have the bail system and some suspects would have to wait behind the bars for two years before the trail, and during these times. With two years of time, they successfully introduced the system to several parts of Romania. This was a preparation for the entry to EU. Latvia – For this small country located in the northern Europe, Kevin had various visits to the prisons to solve the overcrowding problem. They had tuberculosis problem and therefore they had to reorganize the prison system and bail system. The project was funded by the University of Exeter and CORE. It was scarier than working in Romania, because with the TB jabs, he was still worried a lot about the infection as he worked around the virus all days.

From UK to HK Before coming to HK, Kevin was teaching and researching in the school of postgraduate medicine, which was then about to turn to a school of medicine. He didn’t see he had much place to work with the undergraduates because he is not a medical doctor, and he thought it was time to make a move. At that time, he got two offers, one in Cityu and one in the Middle East. He chose HK because he saw the similarity between HK and the UK, which was the sense of community. “HK is a series of big villages, where family and sense of community are important. And to me, these two things are important.” Kristina moved to HK a bit later, in 2004. She was shocked when she arrived as she thought HK was like Vietnam. You may wonder, why would she relate HK to Vietnam? The answer is fashion. Back in those days, all nicely made clothing were made in HK, and the nicely made garments were from Vietnam, so the fashion designer was very surprised about how modern HK was.

Becoming the hall master Kevin won the Teaching Excellence Award in Cityu in 2004/2005, and his students suggested he be a hall master. Then when the recruitment for hall master was being advertised, he decided to apply for it and finally moved into hall 2 in July 2007.

Once in a life time To meet the Mr & Mrs Right, is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. There was a time that Kevin went to Whistler, Canada to ski. The slopes were almost vertical and he broke his leg. Unfortunately, he had to rush to a conference in Florida right after his holiday. That was where Kristina met Kevin for the first time. There are a lot of resemblance between the British and the Korean culture, trust it or not, language is not a barrier, not only the two of them, but also their parents, getting along really well despite not sharing the same language ;)

Julia - 1/F, 2/F RT Julia is a final year student, major in BBA - Global Business Systems Management. She likes smiling and is good at “CREATIVE” cooking. My favorite moment in Hall 2 is climbing up and down the stairs. Since I live on 1/F, I usually walk instead of waiting for the lifts. It is not only faster, but also healthier. In fact, every time I arrived hall and walk up the stairs, I know there are smiling faces and yummy desserts waiting for me. I always find 2/F an energetic floor, with 2 responsible floor representatives - Snow and Big Head. The funniest moment of 2/F is the boys teaching Emil, an exchange student, his “Chinese” name. And I will never forget our first floor dinner in which each room prepared a dish, and after the dinner, and we turned our common room into RED for decoration. Thanks all of you from 1/F & 2/F who have given me the best memory in my last year university life. Love you all!

Annick - 3/F, 4/F RT Annick is currently working at the School of Creative Media, as an assistant to the Associate Deans. One of the highlights of living in hall is the privilege of experiencing its dynamic culture. My favorite moment is when we get together with hall mates, and despite our differences and language barrier, we can still manage to communicate and have a great time with one another. What I appreciate the most is the effort everyone puts into to enjoy one another’s company. Though there are instances when we struggle to find the correct translation for a certain word, yet we still try with our limited knowledge of another language. We put everything on the line to get acquainted and help each other. We laugh together at our broken sentences and with our language grammar mistakes. This is what being a Prosperian is all about.

Kelvin - 5/F, 6/F RT Kelvin is a final year student studying BBA Finance. He likes reading books, especially science fiction and detective stories. Other than reading books, he love cycling, taking photos and playing board games to get relaxation from daily work. As living in hall for 3 years, there are lots of wonderful memories, cooking with a group of people, hot pot, dessert night, playing computer game overnight. If I need to choose the favorite moment, I would say that it would be any time that staying with the my exco(2morrow) ‘s members since there would be less chance that we could group together to do whatever we want and organize activities for the residents when all of us graduate from the university.

Mung - 7/F, 8/F RT Mung is a final student major in Human Resources management. Even I am busy with my study, I like hanging out with my friends. As the leader of 7th and 8th floors, I want to create a feeling of “Together”. Not only playing a role of management team, but also as a friend of other residents. Whatever we are doing like floor decoration, cooking dinner or having secrete grils talks with them, I feel we live like a family, experiencing the warmest moment it is.

IvaN - 9/F, 10/F RT IvaN is working at CityU as an IT Officer. I’m a devil in the Hall. I like scolding people. Everybody hates me. :)

If you truly think that this is the truth. I believe that you don’t belong to this Hall.

PianPian - 11/F RT Pianpian is a PhD student studying in Creative Media Center and her work is doing research plus some teaching assistant work. My favorite moments in hall reflect on a series of things, including chatting with friends, making dessert, and cleaning common room with my floormates. My favorite moment is making dessert for floor mates -- actually I always went through some difficult time before making decision of what to make. But once settling down the recipe, I enjoy making process. Especially accompanying with friends and we could chat over making process. To live with a group of people from different places can be an experience of both meaningful and challenging. Communication might take some time, adapting for local culture might take some time, yet living in a common place allows us to go beyond the difference and find the common ground. As the slogan of Hall 2 says: we live, we share, we involve, we learn, we prosper.

IvaN LAM March 2014

For those who are going to apply for the RT job in Hall 2. You must read this very carefully. However, for those who just want a RT post no matter which hall it is, you may skip this.

Expectation VS Reality What would you expect from being a Residence Tutor? A free single room which is just 5 minutes walk from the Campus? More private space or personal time to do whatever you want? There is much more to this job than you would expect! The workload is overwhelming!!

Responsibility It was my choice to take up this challenge and become a RT. It is a matter of responsibility. I have to be responsible to all residents. Being an RT is not easy, being an RT in Hall 2 is even more difficult. Reaching its twelfth year of operations, Prosperity Hall has gradually developed its own culture and traditions. However, the most difficult thing is, how to sustain these good culture and traditions and at the same time, introducing new elements to keep pace with the development of the Student Residence community and even CityU.

Enjoy Hall Life Hall 2 is a big family with members of different nationalities, culture and backgrounds. In Hall 2, we organise a wide range of events from dessert gatherings to Annual Dinner. Hall cultures and traditions were developed to pass on our Prosperity spirit. Prosperians serves as a remembrance of our prosperous hall life. No matter you are an alumni Prosperian, a current Prosperian or a potential Prosperian, we hope our precious memories in Hall 2 can be shared with you through this annual magazine. As a responsible RT, I’ve tried my best, together with the RA, Council and Hall management team members to provide with you a good living and learning environment. At the end of your Hall life, you may not remember how good or bad the facilities we have, but only the sweet or sour memories happened here. Undoubtedly, hall life is a learning process. I hope everyone living in Prosperity Hall enjoys being part of our big family.

In just a blink of an eye, we have already been half way through the semester. For some seniors, Prosperity Hall has been their home for three years. But for the juniors, this is just the beginning of their hall lives, for that they have just had the tip of the taste here. Though Prosperians’ times in here may be different, the one thing we can be sure is that everyone has had their moods, happiness, anger, sadness, joyfulness. What each Prosperian has been through is distinct and unique, there are moments which they want to hold on to, to keep and to save. No one on earth can stop the time, we all know that. So how do we save the moments we cherish? We take a photo. This is where the theme of this year annual magazine stems from. Our theme is, Capture

the Moment.

We chose “Capture the Moment” for this year’s annual dinner’s theme for two reasons. We hope to show you all the great times Prosperians have had in here, reminding you of the good days, creating a memory collection. Then, the most important reason, is that we hope to encourage each and every one of you, to start capture your moment in Prosperity Hall. The moments that makes you feel warm; the moments that makes you happy; the moments that makes you forget everything else but that very memorable joy; the moments that are worth a lifetime enjoying. Just keep your smartphone with you and take photos whenever you want. You may think that it is silly, but it is the silly thing that you will be enjoying in the future.

Basic Information: Owner: Emily and Kit Room: 1005A Room Type: A Description Small changes make a big difference. Comparing with the original arrangement of a double room, we can feel a bond inside Emily and Kit’s room. By grouping the beds together, it forms a sense of depth in the room. We can see every part of the room is well organized. The room is divided clearly into two parts, one for working and one for rest. Remind us that there is no need to be complicated when designing our room. Just keep it simple stupid.

Emily and Kit: What being special to me is not the room itself, but the people living there. You can see that I got a lot of toys on my bed. Some of them are bought by my roommate to me when she’s traveling around. It is always touched to know that someone thinks of you even when they are not around you. Living in hall isn’t just about having an accommodation that is closed to school, yet, realizing there are people who care so much about you. I cherished my good old days with my roommate and floor-mates. I like the carpet the most since it makes the room so comfy and relaxing. Our floor-mates would just come in and sit on the floor to chat with us. I feel enjoyable with the atmosphere of having a group of people gathered in a small room and having fun together. We got too many inside jokes which make me burst out laughing when I recall them. There are people you meet them at once and will know immediately that they will be your soul-mates in life. In Hall 2, I met mine.

Basic Information: Owner: Henry and Ringo Room: 903B Room Type: B Description It has always been a big question on how to enlarge the space of the room effectively. Henry and Ringo has done a great job. By grouping their tables and beds together, eliminate the space used by the chairs, it is able to resize the space of the room from a long corridor-liked rectangle to a broad one. This changes the feeling of space in a room and how to use the remaining space of the room. Especially useful when you have lots of things inside your room.

Henry: I quite like the setting of our beds. We set them as a “L shape” which creates much space in our room, especially we are in B room. The room created is big enough for us to put our movable drawers, even a refrigerator and a TV. This makes the room more comfortable and user-friendly.

“Chinese couplets for celebrating the 10th anniversary establishment of HSBC Prosperity Hall” (Composed by Residence Tutor George Wan and Written by Wenyi Yang, 2011) The couplets were originally composed for celebrating 2011’s Chinese New Year. Because of the 10th anniversary establishment of the HSBC Prosperity Hall at 2012, the couplets were re-written. The name of our Hall in Chinese are filled in the first character of both upper and lower couplet. Chinese classics sentences are cited in the couplets. It is hoped that the couplets can remind our residents:

Oscar Or (101A)

I really love living on floor one as everyone is so friendly and helpful. The facilities are great and I have really loved living here. Frances Cope (106B)

First Floor, Forever in Synergy. I love the way each floormate shares things with each other and the yummy desserts every week to get everyone together. Living here really makes a second home for me and I treasure every moment being a Prosperian, a member from the first floor. Ziya Wu (104A)

Living in Hall 2 is a great experience. Though I didn’t participate the orientation camp, I still met a lot of friends here. The Prosperians Night impressed me a lot and I can feel the harmonious atmosphere, everyone in Hall 2 seems friendly. As the floor representative of the first floor, I have spent memorable time with my floormates. We will have dessert night every week, sharing delicious cake, cookie or sweet soup made by friends. Thanks to our great chef, Tsun, we had a home-made-taste dinner together last semester. We spent a night doing floor decoration together. We drew and cut and chatted, tired but happy. Maybe the decoration is not that professional, but it’s the experience we had that matters, isn’t it? Melody Zha (104A)

Spending my first year of university on the 1st floor of hall 2 is a pleasure of mine. I met a lot of floormates and really had a lot of fun having dessert night, decorating common room and having hotpot with them. Residence tutor and senior students also gave me some advice on my studies and university life. I’m so grateful to have lived in hall 2 1/F, it is now an important part of my university life. Living in Hall 2 is a great experience. I get to learn the diversity of culture from people living from different nations, which is the main goal for living in Hall 2. I got to learn the language, the behavior, and how people enjoy the time, which expands my mind about the world. Hall 2 also encourages us to spend time together with different people, starting from the roommate to people living on different floors, in which I found it very interesting. William Reynaldi (202B)

I am living with my lovely roommate William, who is an exchange student from Indonesia for a semester. It is really inspiring and novel to know so much about another culture through the interesting stories about the different life experience of him. The toiletmate, Baris, an exchange student from Turkey, also brought the images of another part of the world to me. It is really a fortune to live in this place.

Living on the 2nd floor is enjoyable. Enjoy sharing the common room, enjoy tasting the dessert together, and enjoy decorating our floor. Staying on the 2nd floor is cheerful. Cheered by open-sem rice , cheered by floormates’ smile! Lisa Wong (205B)

Reeve CHIU Long Yin Chairperson This is Reeve, the chairperson of the Residents’ Association Council. This is my second year in Prosperity Hall and I cherish every moment of it.

Why Live in Hall I struggled for quite a long time before finally deciding whether or not to apply for residence. Money has always been a huge concern for everyone and the fear that I might not fit in or get accustomed to living with a group of strangers is also what was stopping me. But then something hit me, I’d have never known what it’d be like if I didn’t even try. I thought it’s always better to give something a try. Since if you really don’t like it, you can always quit. Anyway, I’m glad that I tried because I would have missed this life-time opportunity if I didn’t.

Love at First Sight I still remember the day when I first got here. A nice resident took me on the hall tour, introducing me all the fantastic facilities in Hall 2, telling me all the harmonious relationships he had in Hall 2 and sharing all the unforgiveable stories happened in this Hall. I fell in love with this Hall instantly. Despite its traditional and characteristic activities, it is its warmth that got into my head. The idea that this Hall can be your second home, that residents care for each other and that this is a place where you can be yourself, are what makes Prosperity Hall one and the only.

Growing Passion, Growing Responsibility I participated in the hall orientation camp, and I had a great time with my groupmates and “jobama”. Truly a family we are. To date we are still having reunion every once in a while. I was allocated to the 10th floor, the floor where I have met the greatest and most loving family. I have also met my best friends whom I share my life with. Everything seemed too good to be true. After a semester, I started helping the Residents’ Association executive committee, being the host of two events and on the editorial board of the hall annual magazine, the one you are reading right now. There was this urge in me that made me want to do something for the hall, making it a better place to relax, to play and to live.

Another Milestone, another Pathway The second year, I ran for the popularly elected councilor. Many of my friends asked me why I would choose to be a councilor when I was not asked to and not bounded to. I think it’s because I was inspired by my Joba Ken, the president of the 7th executive committee and the chairperson of the 8th council. He shared with me his stories a lot. He taught me to devote selflessly and give back. He made me understand that the hall doesn’t run itself, she must be supported by those whom she served. That’s why I thought I have to step forward, taking the lead. Being a council isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. Some may think that councilor is high at the top and releases only orders and decisions. But there is more to that, we hope to engage with residents and the other compositions in hall, smooth the relationships and ease the tension. That’s why we’ve tried using a different approach.

Vision This year has been nothing but tough, with all the difficulties that the hall and the Residents’ Association have been through. Here I sincerely hope that those who have the sense of belonging to this hall can work together to overcome the obstacles that we did and will face.

Gary LI Ka Wai (Minion Gary, Minion Gary, Minion Gary) Vice-Chairperson Time flies, I have been living in Hall 2 for one and a half year. The life in hall is really unforgettable. It brings me a fruitful and colorful U-life. Last year, I was one of the RA Executive Committee members. We held a lot of activities for residents in Hall 2, for example Prosperians’ Night, different card games and floor competitions. Those activities not only enriched my skills in organizing activities, it also brought me fulfillment when I successfully organize the activities. When I saw the happy faces of the participants, the time and effort that I invested are worth spending. This year, I am the member of the RA Council. The experience of organizing activities last year can help me to share my opinions to this year’s activities organizing committee members. It is a challenge for me to be a council member. I need to be neutral and think out of box when approving the activities proposal of the committee. Thus, it can bring some new and creative activities to the residents. I hope the activities organizing committee can bring the residents innovative and fun activities in this year and let them enjoy the life in Hall 2.

Jonathan SO Tso Yin Secretary This is my second year as a council member in Hall 2. Time flies, I experienced a lot of changes through this year. All of us overcame different obstacles and came to a new year. I chose to become a council member again because I thought this is a direct way for me to participate in the operation of hall and give a hand to the others, give them an unforgettable hall life. With the experience in last year, I am more confident about the operation of hall. I believe I can give more support to my members as I have more reference for me to give out my opinions. Though the hall experienced a lot of difficulties in this year, I believe as long as we do not give up, we will find a better tomorrow. Here I would like to thank the Executive committee of this year, I heard that they have faced a lot of troubles during the formation of the committee. However, they didn’t give up and formed their own committee. Although they may have fewer members than the previous committees, still, they tried their best to serve all the residents in the hall. One semester has already passed, sometimes, conflicts may happen, I believe it is because all of us want to raise the quality of each activity when we have different ideas. I hope that with the help of different parties in hall, we can present a wonderful hall-life to the residents.

Ringo LAW Kwok Wing Council Member I am Ringo Law, the sports secretary of “Equal2”, the Residents’ Association executive committee of hall 2 last year. I helped to organize hall activities for our hall, that gave a memorable hall life to me and I also obtained some of the skills related to organizing activities from my past experience. This year, I became a member of the Residents’ Association Council. I want to give support to the Executive Committee of our hall by means of sharing my past experience, giving comments to the activities proposal of the Ex-co. From my past experience, the great co-operation between council and Ex-co can give a big help on improving the quality of the activities organized. I really appreciate the organizing committee “H2O”. Although they have only a few members, they can still perform quite well. I hope they can rely on each other and hold the unforgettable activities for our hall.

Tracy WONG Ching Sze Council Member This is my second year living in HSBC Prosperity Hall. Living in this hall is definitely one of the most precious moments in my university life. I get to spend days and nights with my friends here. Playing mahjong or monopoly, watching movies, cooking, night chatting, etc. There are many fun things I can do and polish my friendship with my hallmates! Besides the personal aspect, I was the RA Executive Committee member of Equal2 last year and I am a member of this year’s RA Council. Being involved in the hall official activities is a great opportunity for me to contribute to my hall. As a RA council member, from collecting opinions, seeking for improvements, looking into detailed points to approving the whole proposal, we know that holding one activity costs much time and efforts from the committee members behind. I have always appreciated the great work from this year’s Organizing Committee and all the hard works they put in each and every activity. In my opinion, the best way to support them is to participate in their activities and have fun with them. Hopefully I can meet you in their upcoming events!

Hall Emblem The emblem of HSBC Prosperity Hall was first designed in 2003. Purplish red and light yellow are the colors of walls outside HSBC Prosperity Hall. In centre, there are two ancient Chinese characters “業昕”, which is the Chinese name of this hall, surrounded by “HSBC Prosperity Hall” and “City University of Hong Kong”. This hall was named by City University of Hong Kong together with HSBC, the sponsoring organisation of this hall. “業” is taken from our school motto “敬業樂群”, which means devoting oneself to his or her work and appreciating people around. “ 昕” means rising sun, representing vigour and vitality. The name 業昕 implies that we are sparing no effort to cultivate our residents to be pillars of society, in dignity and honour as stated in the school motto, so they can make significant contributions to our community.

Signature Banner Signature Banner is probably the very first tradition that residents will experience when they first come to Prosperity Hall. The first banner was born in 2002 and having a signature banner has become a year ritual. Every year senior and new residents, locals or non-locals, will sign on the banner during the check-in period. Such practice is a declaration of one started living in this Hall. This symbolic canvas will be hung on the wall all year as a reminder of us being Prosperians.

In Prosperity Hall, we have also got a “Time Tunnel”. Here we put the group photos taken in the Annual Prosperians Night on the wall. Glancing through the wall you will see the history and the changes in our hall.

We are the first Hall to organise Orientation Camp in the CityU Student Residence community. The O’camp not only provides a chance for new residents to develop friendship with each other, it also help to strength the connection between the new and existing residents in our Hall. Games are specially designed to help students to get adapt to hall life. For example, a Cooking competition will be held in the O’camp.

Cheer ! During inter-hall competitions, we like to show our hall spirit by cheering for our fellow hallmates. As a hall, we encourage one another and will support each other! 而每位業昕人都 必定曉得 Hall Cheer,只要有一人叫「Who are we!?」

These are the Hall Tees that Prosperians had from different years. You can see from the design that we have quite a diverse style. Every year a group of “designers” will brainstorm different ideas and then each of them will draft their own designs. The final product will be chosen by all Prosperians, including current residents, RA members and alumni! Unlike the term “Camp Tee” that you are familiar with, we call these “Hall Tees”, meaning that it is not designed for the sake of orientation camp, but for the sake of Prosperians having something unifying and remarkable to wear during their time in hall.

Prosperians Night

Prosperians Night is an event held every semester, entertaining all the new and current residents. On that night, residents from the same floor would sit together and enjoy the dinner and programs prepared by the resident tutors and residents’ association. They would sit in a round table, which in Chinese traditions carries a meaning of reunion of family members, meaning that we Prosperians are a loving family. Besides delicious food, lucky draw and games, the most highlighted part would be the floor-photos and hall-photo taking sessions, which would become a block of “Time Tunnel”.

Over the past few years, Prosperians have travelled to different parts of the world and explored a number of diverse cultural scenic spots and heritage. Being an annual tradition of Hall 2, Prosperians have been looking forward to the study tour every year. Residents will first form a group and do some researches on the desired destination countries. They are responsible for planning the whole trip by themselves. After travelling to the desired destinations, Prosperians will write post trip reflections and even organize cultural night to share their travelling experience with other residents. Other than cultural involvements that Prosperians have experienced, some experiences are so unique that it can only be experienced by yourselves. Throughout the whole process of planning and executing their travel plans, Prosperians have learnt how to better prioritize and organize their works. In coming years, Prosperians will continue this tradition and discovering even more around the world.

This year, a group of 24 students joined the Macau study tour for a 2-day trip. The trip mainly focus on food culture and heritage visit. To most of the participants, this was the first time that they visited Macau, thus provided a great opportunity for them to have a look on the international city which history similar to Hong Kong but with a different style of living. After the tour, a Macau exhibition had been held to demonstrate the culture of Macau. Other than texts and photo of different places and food, Peanut Brittle had been offered to residents to try. The whole trip ends with pleasure and nice memories. So, although the time is a bit too soon, it’s great to think about the study tour destination next year with our hallmates!!

周公 It was a nice experience being to Macau. Actually, that was my first time. Macau gave me quite a fresh impression. At first, I thought Macau would be quite similar to Hong Kong. However, it was totally different – Macau has a unique and special culture. Macau’s building features are full of Portuguese customs. This can be completely reflected by the local street names – they are all in Chinese complemented with Portuguese (instead of English). Overall, Macau was really new to me, it was amazing and amusing.

Student from Malaysia PHANG, Hui Ting “一筒,白板,八萬…” These, are what I heard from where I am now. Yes, I am in the common room, looking at my lovely floor mates playing Mahjong. Hall 2, comprising of a comparatively smaller community, is, the only hall that allows the residents to play mahjong. This is one of the reasons why I like Hall 2. I am a fulltime undergraduate student from Malaysia. I have been selected to be placed in this hall randomly. Overwhelming with excitement and joy, I am here. Life in Hall 2 is fantastic. I got to know many new friends from different background and countries. The residents here are extremely friendly and helpful. They treat me just like their family, assisting and giving me precious advice when I face any problems. Usually, staying far away from home will be easily homesick. But, I’m not, because Hall 2 is just like my second home. Life here is very happening as well. There are lots of events throughout the years, like floor dinner, Prosperian Night and Poon Choi. I particularly like the weekly dessert night. It is a day in which all residents from the same floor come together to have dessert and chitchat. This activity has built a more intimate relationship between us. Moreover, I have joined the orientation camp. It was a great and life changing experience. I had been introduced to the unique culture of Hong Kong. What I find it most interesting and impressive is how all residents work and play together in harmony and joy. Also, I have improved my spoken Cantonese tremendously. Thanks to everyone! Last but not least, someone told me that hall is a place where you will meet lifelong and amazing friends. Well, I can’t agree more. I believe all residents from Hall 2, will always be sisters and brothers, no matter when and where are we. I truly appreciate each of you and every moment spent here.

Student from Mainland China 我在 Hall 2 的生活 Dara 王俏 雖然已經是 year 2 的學生,但今年是我第一 年來到 Hall 2。

Student from Taiwan Jeff Huang My name is Jeff or as people may know me “臺灣靚仔”. I am an exchange student from Taiwan. I’m studying in college of business for one semester. When the first day I arrived Hall 2, I locked the bathroom and front food immediately. Because we actually do that in my country. I live in the resident of my home university for 3 years and I don’t even know my neighbor’s name. Hall 2 gives me the warmest welcome that I would never have thought about it. The people here were extremely nice to me and we had a lot of fun. In the hall we had many activities like Singing Contest, The Big Bowl Feast (盆菜宴), Study Tour to Macau, Dessert night, Annual dinner, Floor dinner, Inter-hall competition. As an exchange student, I am pleased to get to know more about Hong Kong with so many friends here. In the joint hall dinner, Jean, Jan and I even performed a song represent hall 2 in front of all the residents in CityU. It’s my first time to sing in front of 700 people! The facilities in Hall 2 is brilliant. Pan, sideboard, microwave oven, rice makers and any things you can think of is in hall 2. We can cook anything we want in common room which is totally different from my university. G/F common room even had a new karaoke. I learn Cantonese by the beautiful heartbreaking voice of my hall mates little by little. Everyone in Hall 2 can be a friend of you, even the security LING玲姐. Properians were like a big family. We care, we share, we help and learn from each other all the time. We talk random topics like politics, media, girls, food, travel and social issue. It helps me a lot to reach out of my comfort zone. Hall 2 gives me the best environment to actually learn how to live as a HongKongese. And I own my hashtag #港仔交換日記 to write down my Hall 2 daily life and adventure. “HSBC Prosperity hall, your second home.” From the bottom of my heart, I truly think so. We had countless funny stories and precious memories with all of my hall mates. Hall 2 completes my 5 months exchange life. I’m under prosperity’s spell and you guys make me feel young again. I’m physically attracted to Hall 2 and don’t want to go back to Taiwan!

Live and Learn WU Hau Kuen

26th February, 2014 This has been the third year for me to be in Hall 2, but every single day spent in here is still fresh and exciting to me. The very reason why I chose Hall 2 at the first place is that I have a friend who had lived in here for a year and I thought it would better to have someone look out for me. But time flashed, I am already one of seniors. The first impression this place gave me is that it has got the finest facilities and the most harmonious atmosphere because there were many residents introducing to me everything here on the registration day. I participated in the orientation camp and I was so grateful for them for giving me a unique orientation.

Soon after that I was elected the residents’ association executive committee, hoping to contribute to the hall. The work, however, had never been easy. Every day I was stuck with endless meetings, proposal and lecturing. What’s worse was that I had not gotten along quite well with my other committee members, having a lot of discords. With so much work and incompatible members, I had my complaints. Be that as it may, everyone worked and did their best trying to perfect the orientation camp, putting aside their differences and complementing each other’s weakness. At last I was so glad that we could all fight till the end together, as a team. Being one of the members in and the friend of “2morrow”, I am so honored.

The second year I became the chairperson of the Residents’ Association Council, hoping that I can share some opinions as reference to the new executive committee. But “Equal 2” has been tough to deal with. The novel ideas striking the traditional culture, often put the two groups at spark. While being mad about them not taking my opinions, I sometimes turned out to be the one who are too obsessed with the past. Like the drama they held in the orientation camp, I didn’t think it would work until it received great feedback, everyone was having a great time. I have learnt how to teach freshman with patience, accepting novel ideas with an open mind and how to persuade with logic. He who teaches, learns. It turned out than I learn more from “Equal 2” than they do from me. The last year, I can finally enjoy my hall life as a normal, regular resident. I have also been the “Joba” this year. But the fact is, I am not a good Joba. I didn’t shout hard enough when I was doing the cheers; I didn’t know much about room games; I didn’t know how to heat up the atmosphere. Fortunately my groupmates enjoyed more than I had expected. Looking at them playing hard during the games, I could feel succeeded. See some of them having so much enthusiasm and persistence to the hall guilt me a little but at the same time I am so thankful. I am thankful that I was given a group of “Jainui” who doesn’t despise me. I sincerely hope that they can have a good time in Hall 2 in the future. These three years I have been living on the 5th floor. Some would say it must be very boring living with no girls. But I enjoy every moment here, a bunch of guys breaking into others’ room, walking to the common room topless without fearing scaring anyone. Playing computer games and mahjong till dawn is nothing but usual. Even though we are a family of guys, we would still cook together. This is the 5th floor. From getting into Hall 2, knowing my Jobama, being the executive committee, being taught by the residence tutors, being the council chairperson to having all my lovable Jainui, these are all fate. Right now, I simply want to enjoy the rest of my days here in Hall 2, cherishing every moment I can have with everyone. Everything and everyone I have met in here, good or bad, contribute much to my life.
