WHY DO WE NEED TO DEFINE OUR CITY COLOR ? Taipei City Color Plan A number of countries featured in designated and dedicated city colors can be found all around the world. The design of city colors has been an essential part of urban planning in Europe ever since 1850s. These cities can be properly identified by a palette of emblematic colors predefined through comprehensive studies. As the cities evolve, their tints and shades change; one of the earliest case in point is Turin in Italy. More than 20 colors were defined as this city’s basic hues during 1800-1850. After a sophisticated progress of urban development and inevitably failing to follow the primary plot for its tones, a new plan to renovate the city’s colorful outlook was then taken place in 1978. Apart from European cities, Japan has also initiated its color scheme and practice on urban scale since 20 years ago. In accordance with the Landscape Act (2004), a study on colors taken account of the visual harmony between any building and its ambient environment must be conducted before the construction to avoid incongruous tones. The kaleidoscope of Nature is a genuine blessing to humankind while a city of artistic touch is a revelation of human being’s creative mind. Breeding the citizens’ aesthetic awareness and sense helps in shaping a charismatic Taipei. Analyze the prospection and explore the possibilities of urban color planning through international case study, the use of Color Smart tools, field trips and status surveys ; and invite industry professionals and designer team and engage the citizens in interactive events to coordinate the idea of theme colors in the reincarnation of the city. City colors contribute to an integrated cultural image developed in the progress of urban civilization as a result of collective consciousness and individual self-awareness, which illustrate the outlook of a city and carry out its history. It should be covered in the urban reconstruction blueprints in an attempt to depict a city with competing characters. The City Yeast was designated by Urban Regeneration Office Taipei City in 2012 to introduce the Taipei City Colors Plan to the citizens in order to encourage public attention and action, and keep promoting the idea though this publication.

EXISTING STATE OF TAIPEI COLOR The variegated landscape of Taipei has been varied as the history moves on and environment evolves since Japanese occupation. Our perception of the city is always affected by the hues chosen by the whole society or individuals either intentionally or unintentionally. The chromatic codes of Taipei city are collected and organized in a scientific manner through Taipei City Color Infographic to facilitate the public understanding of the status quo.
Taipei Street Tree Color Analysis / Taipei is the city full of green street trees. In this city, 30 citizens can own a tree together. Each of street trees stands in Taipei everyday and already becomes one of the important colors of Taipei. Illustrate the seasonal changes of the street trees in Taipei.

Taipei Landmarks Color / From the historical sites of the Qing Dynasty to the skyscrapers of the twenty-first century, landmarks have accompanied Taipei for many years as part of citizen’ s life and visitor’s attraction. Illustrate the color association with various populations.
Taipei Chain store color/ The chain enterprises are very developed in Taipei. There are many kinds of chain stores, which invovled in food, clothing, living, transportation, education and entertainment. Those industries not only link to daily life , but also create a special city color tone.

A mark is an important recognition of an identity. We survey the construction of Taiwan government institution marks and the color composition, and find an international case from Melbourne to see how they make a complete project to design their city marks.
Taipei taxi / Taxis are the largest mobile color blocks in Taipei. Illustrate and compare different taxi colors from other places.
Taipei street furniture/ We can see lots of furnitures like traffic lights, barriers and other furnitures. All of these have an huge influence on the city color.

Professional Projec t of City Color Environment Color Improvement Plan
WAY OF PLANNING COLOR This project aims at four principles: passing down the spirit of cultural region, expressing the uniqu e cha ra cte ris tic of a region, presenting a modern image of a city, and planning a future city development. We will reach international standard and follow the future flow of color development. Take the color of city environment for example, it combines the context of cultural color, and we will offer an efficient plan to manage multiple elements of the color of a whole city view. Then, it will be a system of environment color planning which is suitable for the style of the city and its own development in future, and it will be applied easily by the citizens and the officers to realize our vision of a designed city. 8
Ways of planning colors
It is important to get citizens involved the project. Everyone can make a slight change of the environment. The color planning combines the context of cultural color, and we will offer an efficient plan to manage multiple elements of the color of a whole city view. Later on, it will be a system of environment color planning which is suitable for the style of the city and its own development in future, and it is also easily applied by citizens and officers to realize our vision of a designed city.
2-1 Collect the information
1. Make a plan: acc ording to races, time, space, contex ts and methods.
3. Analyze the research. (Environment/ Architecture) According to the research result, analyze the features of the target place, from space, time and culture areas; besides, analyze environmental and architectural color using from cultural context, and discuss the possibility of future color of city.
6. Operate the plan. Apply the plan to making a makeover.

7. Estimate the project and share exper ience. a. Invite color experts to estimate the color planning and the effect of the projec t. b. Elevate local citizens’ identity of color planning by promoting the projec t and sharing the activity in education.
5. Decide color system Decide color system basing on the schematic project.
8. Keep observing. Keep observing and recording and make this experience and information as a document sharing with others.

Color of Breathing
You are Color Explorers
1. Choose a spot to observe the breathing of your city and take pictures without any editing. 2. Shoot the pictures at different time but at the same place. 3. You will get your own color chart of view from different shooting time and put them in sequent order. 4. Upload the photos to Taipei City Color Facebook and name the album as “Color of Breathing_Your Name / the number of photos you take”.
1. Print out the color dice and the badge of “ The Captain of Color Explorers. 2. Find your teammates, and each of you chooses at most 2 colors. 3. Let’s move and take pictures when you find the objects which belong to your colors. 4. Within the time limit, the honor of “Captain of Color Explorers” goes to the one who finds out the most. 5. The Captain of Color Explorers will take his/her own picture, upload the photos to Taipei City Color Facebook and name the album as “Color Explorers_ Your Name”.

1. Prepare the camera and the note recording the time/ the location/ other descriptions before you take pictures. 2. Choose one material as your topic, observes and shoot it; such as, tile. 3. Categorize your photos by different materials, upload the photos to Taipei City Color Facebook and name the album as “ Color Chart of City Materials_ Material / Your Name / the number of photos you take”.
1. Bring the camera out and hit the road! 2. Shoot the full view of the street at night. 3. Use Photoshop to mosaic the photos. 4. Combine the colors and the map to complete “the Map of City Night Color”. 5. Upload the photos to Taipei City Color Facebook and name the album as “Color of Light_ Location / Your Name / the number of photos you take”.
1. Take your camera and choose a spot. Don’t hesitate, yeah, that’s right, stand still! 2. Divide your body into 12 parts and take pictures clock wise from 30 degrees to 360 degrees. 3. Print out your photos and paste them clock wise on a piece of paper. 4. Write down the location in the middle of the color wheel and you finish your Color Wheel 360 degrees. 5.Upload the photos to Taipei City Color Facebook and name the album as “Color Wheel 360°_ Location / Your Name/ the number of photos you take”. BIG COLLECTION OF TAIPEI COLOR The Big Collection of Taipei Color is a photography project about urban layouts and colors in Da’an, Xinyi, Wanhua, Datong, Beitou and Zhongzheng Districts. There are 40 photographers and a number of citizens joined this project, and this book contains 1368 pieces of photo that selected from more than three thousand. It is designed to preserve the city colors for the prospection of Taipei.

1. Draw some lines with seasonal colors of street trees in Taipei by observing your surroundings; refer to the hues of for example Chinese rain trees on Zhongcheng Road or cotton trees on Zhongxiao E. Road. 2. Take down the colors from a variety of materials discovered in Taipei city and come up the matching scheme for them. 3. Try to produce multiple colors by adding black or white in RGB, and calculate how many tints and shades you have created. 4. Devise an action to change the ambient colors, discuss with 10 people and try to make it happen. 5. Use Google tools to search for the color scheme of every featured city and collage the result into a world map.
