elcome to our latest issue of Motors Ireland. On our cover this issue is the amazing Pininfarina Battista. Design house Pininfarina knows something about beauty, having styled 64 Ferraris in its 91-year history. The Battista is its first ground-up automobile, a production version of a concept that debuted in 2018. Named for the company’s founder, Battista “Pinin” Farina, the Battista, with its lavish curves and 1877 horsepower, was brought to life thanks to the investment of Pininfarina’s owners, the Indian conglomerate Mahindra. Faster than a current Formula 1 race car in its 0 -100 km/h sub-two second sprint, and with 1,900 hp and 2,360 Nm torque on tap, the Battista will combine extreme engineering and technology in a zero emissions package. The Battista’s 120 kWh battery provides power to four electric motors – one at each wheel – with a simulated WLTP range of over 500 km (310 miles) on a single charge. No more than 150 Battistas will be individually hand-crafted at the Pininfarina SpA atelier in Cambiano, Italy. If you’re a fan of old exotics you will like our feature of the Lamborghini Jalpa. You may or may not have heard of it before, This year, Lamborghini celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Jalpa, presented for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1981. In keeping with Lamborghini tradition, the Jalpa takes its name from a breed of fighting bulls, the Jalpa Kandachia, and is the Sant’Agata Bolognese carmaker’s last evolution of the grand touring sedan concept with 8-cylinder engine mounted in a rear-mid position. Thanks to the increased bore, the 3.5-litre displacement (3485 cc), powered by 4 Weber 42 DCNF twin carburetors, and a compression ratio of 9.2:1, this engine delivers a maximum power of 255 HP at 7000 rpm and a maximum torque of 32 kgm at 3500 rpm, enabling the Jalpa to reach a maximum speed of 248 km/h (155 mph). aster than a current Formula 1 race car in its 0 -100 km/h sub-two second sprint, and with 1,900 hp and 2,360 Nm torque on tap, the Battista will combine extreme engineering and technology in a zero emissions package. The Battista’s 120 kWh battery provides power to four electric motors – one at each wheel – with a simulated WLTP range of over 500 km (310 miles) on a single charge. No more than 150 Battistas will be individually handcrafted at the Pininfarina SpA atelier in Cambiano, Italy. As the Battista pure-electric hyper GT nears its final phas of development and customer deliveries early in 2022, revered racer and Automobili Pininfarina Test and Development Driver Nick Heidfeld has taken the opportunity to appraise the most powerful Italian sports car ever created, on road and track near the company’s engineering and operations centre in northern Italy. Automobili Pininfarina’s engineers have worked with ex-Formula One and Formula E driver Nick Heidfeld since the start of the Battista development programme. Nick said: “It has been a real privilege to play a part in developing Battista, which represents a significant evolution in the world of hyper and luxury cars. From the first time I experienced Battista’s performance in 2019 in an advanced simulator, to today on road and track, I believe the Automobili Pininfarina team has successfully developed a unique hyper GT that is enormous fun, as well as incredibly fast.” As the most powerful production car to ever come out of Italy, engineering excellence has been the constant throughout development, and the tailored driving experience provided by the Battista’s advanced e-powertrain and bespoke driving dynamics has impressed Heidfeld throughout. The full 1,900 hp is experienced in Furiosa mode, which also utilises the full torque available from the four independent electric motors, combining to deliver a 0-100 km/h time of less than two seconds and a top speed of 350 km/h. Originally projected to produce 2,300 Nm of torque, Battista is now developing an increased 2,360 Nm. This comes from two 250 kW motors at the front, and two 450 kW motors at the rear, with 280 Nm of torque for each front motor and 900 Nm at each rear motor. Nick Heidfeld said: “In this test I was able to drive Battista with full power available. The effect under acceleration is completely mindbending – drivers will never bore of the experience, no matter how many times they feel it. This road car sprints faster

than a Formula 1 car, and in Furiosa mode, I was left with a huge grin on my face every time. Every client that experienced Battista with me was positively overwhelmed by the experience – there is simply nothing like it.” Heidfeld continued: “Battista is a beautiful piece of design, and its formidable presence is now enhanced by its unique exterior sound. With Battista in Furiosa mode, the 12

exterior sound is at its most audible setting and it instantly made me smile on approach. You hear Battista before you see it - the car appears ‘alive’, and it helps develop an emotional connection that I honestly did not expect. The team had a tough target to hit here, and I believe this strategy is now proving a success.” Four independent high-performance electric perma-
nent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) independently distribute power to each wheel through the Battista’s advanced torque vectoring system, which delivers infinitely variable driving dynamics. The system recuperates and transfers electrical energy without using the brakes – the active energy shifting takes place directly via the four electric motors, resulting in a much faster, more precise and efficient shift of torque compared with torque vectoring by braking. Control of the driving experience is provided by a beautifully-milled rotary dial, ergonomically situated right next to the driver, allowing for quick changes in driving mode between Pura, Calma, Energica, Furiosa and Carattere settings – each one lending a unique character to the Battista’s drive, perfectly adapted to a range of driving conditions. Heidfeld said: “The handling on open roads – even on unpredictable surfaces – proved Battista to be beautifully balanced. Just how a hyper GT should feel. Battista’s performance on track had already surprised and impres-
sed me after I experienced it in Nardo earlier this year, so my expectations on this occasion were set high. This test however confirmed that the team has achieved its target of creating a new type of hyper GT which is rewarding on all surfaces. The ride quality and damping both feel excellent, and the steering feels natural and the perfect fit for what we want to achieve in Battista. I am very sensitive to steering feel as a racing driver, and the sweet spot here is for it to feel light yet connected, and direct yet smooth.” Calibrated using thousands of miles of software simulation before being introduced to development cars, the driving modes allow the driver to fine-tune the driving experience and unlock both the full potential of the advanced torque vectoring system and honed characteristics of the Battista as a hyper GT. Paolo Dellacha, Automobili Pininfarina Chief Product and Engineering Officer remarked: “Our cooperation with Nick Heidfeld started in 2019, when he participated in the first physical ergonomic test of the Battista interior mo-

del; evaluating the driving position and the proposed HMI system. This was followed by him ‘virtually’ testing Battista in an advanced driving simulator where we started to tune the hyper GT’s bespoke chassis dynamics set-up. Nick has been a brilliant partner throughout the whole development programme, not only for his driving skills and unique experience in both Formula 1 and Formula E, but also for his ability to evaluate and improve the programme in its various stages of development by delivering the anticipated view of our customers. “This input was essential as we aimed to combine the extreme performance of a hypercar with a much wider spectra of usability in Battista, where outstanding power and torque are always accessible, safe and enjoyable on roads every day. Battista now has incredibly refined body and axle balance, perfect integration of e-powertrain and chassis domain controls, and optimum specific calibrations of its five Drive Modes. Coupled with its highly-connected User Interface and unique Sound Experience, Battista is now redefining the essence of Granturismo.” 14

RANGE ROVER T
he Range Rover, has spanned just five generations over its 51-year history – and the latest Range Rover marks the perfect next step for the car. Big changes in the redesign include the choice of two plug-in hybrid models to meet environmental concerns, with 38kWh lithium-ion batteries capable of delivering up to 100 kilometres of electric-only driving; a move that will be welcomed by many customers. The new Range Rover is also set to become the first-ever all-electric model from 2024. Two turbodiesel and two petrol engines will also be available, including a super-fast, all-new twin-turbocharged V8 model. There will also be long and short-wheelbase versions of the new model. Ramping up the Range Rover’s appeal to families, it will, for the first time (in the long wheelbase version) come with the option of seven seats, while the standard layout will incorporate five seats. It has air suspension as standard, whi-
le the exterior lines are sleeker than ever before. Advanced four-wheel steering will be standard on the new Range Rover, giving it a tight turning circle useful both off-road and in the city, while top models will also boast 24-way adjustable massage rear seats divided by a console incorporating a fridge, and motorised fold-out ‘picnic’ tables. Each passenger, in top models, will get their own big screen, and in the ultimate touch of luxury, the cup-holders are motorised too. First deliveries of the Range Rover will be made early next year and, from launch, it will be available with a mild hybrid straight-six cylinder 3-litre petrol (P400) and 3-litre diesel engines (D300 and D350), along with the P530 Twin Turbo 4.4-litre V8 petrol. The plug-in hybrids will follow from January and a fast, sharper-handling SV version, from Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations division will be added later. The fully electric model - of particularly interest to many urban customers - will arrive in 2024.

NEW MERCEDESAMG SL
M
ercedes-Benz – currently clocking up something of an industry record in terms of the number and frequency of its new model introductions – has launched yet another ‘latest version’, this time of a model widely and justly regarded as one of motoring’s most iconic creations – the new Mercedes-AMG SL. Seen as something of a secure long-term investment for owners and collectors who maintain theirs in good-as-new condition, the Mercedes-Benz SL has endured as a symbol of elegance and style ever since it first arrived on the scene as the 300SL Roadster back in 1954 – a model inspired by a Grand Prix racing car built two years earlier. The stuff of dreams amongst those who thrill at the thought of sports car motoring (and who relish the admiring glances of onlookers), the SL badge is one that, almost uniquely, sparks thoughts of sun-soaked days, motoring along our scenic Copper Coast and Wild Atlantic Way routes. Reborn, according to Mercedes, as ‘an icon for the modern era’, the new SL emerges as the Mercedes-AMG SL offering what they call ‘performance luxury’ with a 2+2 seats configuration (the first since 1989) and a ‘revolutionary interior experience’ that combines analogue geometry with the digital world – a combination reflected in a fully digital instrument
cluster integrated into a three-dimensional, high-tech visor. Elsewhere within a package that Mercedes says ‘combines the highest levels of comfort and quality in its interior, with just the right amount of sportiness’ is an ‘aviation-inspired’ instrument panel, a centre console with adjustable touchscreen, sculptured seats with integrated headrests, heated ‘airscarf ’ feature and a wide choice of sports or performance trim and leather coverings. From S-Class, a second-generation MBUX system is fitted supplemented with AMG-specific content. It will be launched in several performance variants with two 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engines available initially with 476 or 585 hp, top speeds from 295 km/h and 0 to 100 km/h times of under four seconds in each case. A Formula 1 inspired E PERFORMANCE hybrid with an electric power unit at the rear axle will follow. Fully variable 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive is standard. Described by Mercedes-Benz passenger car sales manager, Ciaran Allen as a ‘true legend for the future’, the new SL comes in a softtop version which Allen says ‘can be opened and closed at speeds up to 60 kilometres per hour’. Regarding price and availability in Ireland, Allen adds: “first models are expected to be available here March 2022 with prices to be announced at time of introduction”. 19

T
he most significant change is the 4.0 litre six-cylinder boxer engine. This high-revving power plant has been taken directly from the 911 GT3 Cup race car and develops 500 PS in the 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport – 75 PS more than the previous GT4 Clubsport model. In addition to many upgraded details, the focus in developing the new 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport was on further improving overall performance. The standard 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK) fitted to the car now uses all seven forward gears, rather than six. All gears feature shorter ratios than in the previous model. Depending on the track and series-specific regulations, the new 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport can achieve lap times that are over two percent quicker than the previous model. The homologated vehicle is track-ready ex factory and can be used in SRO racing series around the world without further modifications. The 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport continues this tradition and offers a further improvement in terms of its competitiveness. The 500 PS 4.0 litre six-cylinder boxer engine taken directly from the current 911 GT3 Cup racing car is almost 18 per cent more powerful than the 3.8 litre engine that was used in the previous model. Thanks to an optimised air intake, maximum power is achieved at 8,300 rpm – 800 rpm higher than the previous engine. The new engine revs up to 9,000 rpm. It develops 465 newton metres (Nm) at 6,000 rpm instead of the previous 425 Nm at 6,600 rpm. The result is a much wider usable speed band, which makes driving the car much easier for pro-racers and amateur drivers alike.

T
he Ferrari BR20, the latest addition to the Prancing Horse’s One-Off series, was unveiled recently and joins the most exclusive group in Maranello’s range: unique, absolutely bespoke cars crafted to the specifications of a client and designed as a clear expression of their own unique requirements.
The BR20 is a two-seater V12 coupé developed on the GTC4Lusso platform, which in terms of its philosophy and styling approach, cleverly references the magnificent Ferrari coupés of the 1950s and 60s, without the slightest hint of nostalgia. Instead, it
5
GIMME
pulls off the challenging feat of marrying timeless elegance with muscular sportiness, effortlessly incorporating styling themes typical of some of the most iconic 12-cylinders in Ferrari history, including the 410 SA and 500 Superfast. The GTC4 Lusso’s two rear seats have been removed to add extra dynamism to the BR20’s ultra-sleek fastback line. The new car is three inches longer than the original, thanks to a specific rear overhang treatment designed to create a silhouette that beautifully emphasises its proportions. One of the cornerstones of the design process for this one-off was the radical modification made to the cabin volume. This in turn gave the design team, led by Flavio Manzoni, the freedom to conceive the innovative proportions that ultimately produced a powerful yet stylistically coherent exterior design theme. Designed for a longstanding client who was deeply involved in every step of its creation, the Ferrari BR20 represents a true interpretation of the traditional coachbuilder’s art, successfully transforming an existing model in a masterful and unique way taking inspiration from and paying homage to the company’s core values of innovation and passion.

ZHIYUN CRANE HANDHELD GIMBAL Smartphone gimbals are great, as they give you a stable handheld grip for shooting footage using phones and action cams. Problem is, when the time comes you want to upgrade to a mirrorless camera, you’ll have to buy an entirely new gimbal, as the darn things won’t support the kind of weight those cameras carry. The Zhiyun Crane M3 changes that. The newest iteration of the outfit’s handheld gimbal for smartphones and action cams, the device also vows to accommodate all point-and-shoot cameras and up to 90 percent of mirrorless cameras in the market, allowing you to use the same accessory if you do eventually make the switch. Sadly, it won’t handle the largest cameras like DSLRs or the bigger full-frame mirrorless rigs with large lenses out there, but it should work with most mirrorless setups for majority of content creators out there. www.zhiyun-tech.com from €399

How much faster? According to the outfit, the new electric bicycle can be ridden at top speeds of 31 mph, a significant leap from the 20mph limit of their last model. Of course, running that fast means it’s going to run afoul of many local laws that limit e-bikes to 20mph or less (15mph in some jurisdictions), so we’re not sure exactly how well this will be received compared to their previous releases. www.vanmoof.com from €3,000
FUJIFILM INSTAX MINI EVO It looks like a vintage camera that came out well before the turn of the century. You know, the kind that takes a roll of film that you’ll have to take to the shop to get developed into prints. Turns out, it’s not one of those. Instead, the Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo is the outfit’s newest instant print camera that combines the classic appeal of old Polaroids with modern tech conveniences. The new flagship in the outfit’s instant film line, it brings the same immediate gratification of previous models with credit card-sized prints you can hold in your hand shortly after taking a photo. TESLA MODEL 3
T
esla began the modern electric car movement, kicking off with the Roadster in 2005, ahead of the Model S, and more recently, the more affordable Model 3. It’s the latter we’re testing, in its Long Range form. At first glance, the Tesla Model 3 looks like a normal car, except for the fact it doesn’t have a front grille, the handles are flush with the car, giving an illusion they aren’t there at all, and there isn’t a key, just a card you hold on the B-pillar to lock and unlock it. All very modern indeed. The exterior is simple but eye catching. The colour choices include Pearl White Multi-Coat, Solid Black, Midnight Silver, Deep Blue and Red Multi-Coat. Stepping inside there are the same general concepts of a normal car, seats, steering wheel, and all that stuff. But there’s no instrument cluster, no hand brake and no gear selector. What you do get is a 15-inch centre touchscreen which controls everything from media, navigation, and communications. While charging the Model 3 and having some time on my hands I noticed an expanded roster of games, the ability to watch Netflix, and increased web functionality. From a practical perspective, the screen lets you literally control the car. You can adjust air flow to the hidden air vents, view your speed, open the glovebox and the boot. You also have a handy wireless charging station for two phones. You can also choose a combination of white and black premium interior should you so desire at a cost of 1,200 euros and it looks so well. There are top tether and ISOFIX child seat anchor points in the rear. There is an abundance of space for passengers and storage is impressive too. The lack of engine sees the front turned into a front boot. Storage is an impressive 542-litres across the combined luggage spaces. The Model 3 also has multiple cup holders and bottle holders which is very handy.
The Tesla Model 3 has three variants available all with varying levels of performance and battery wizardry: the Standard Range Plus (448 km WLTP, priced from €48,990), Model 3 Performance (567 km WLTP, priced from €65,990) and Long Range (580 km WLTP, priced from €58,990). Driving the model 3 was a lot of fun. As there’s no gears, there’s no lag. There’s just acceleration and torque. You put your foot down, and it goes, and goes, sprinting to 100km/h in 4.4. seconds and it has a top speed of 233km/h. Range on the Long Range variant is impressive, with Tesla claiming 580 (WLTP) of potential distance. We say potential distance because it really does depends on how you drive it. I will say my range anxiety was extremely low with the Model 3 and that made a huge difference as I could enjoy the drives without constantly thinking about my next charge. The Tesla Model 3, will show you where fast charge stations are if you’re running low, and how much it will cost you to charge. Most buyers will charge their Model 3 at home from a wallbox and rarely need to charge on the go. But the Model 3 also comes with a built-in CCS Charge Port for compatibility with third party fast charging networks like IONITY and ESB, or Tesla’s own Supercharger network and Destination chargers. The Tesla Model 3 comes as standard with advanced hardware capable of providing Autopilot features, and full self-driving capabilities in the future through software updates designed to improve functionality over time. Autopilot advanced safety and convenience features are designed to assist you with the most burdensome parts of driving. Basic Autopilot comes as standard and enables your car to steer, accelerate and brake automatically for other vehicles and pedestrians within its lane. The Enhanced Autopilot package gives drivers additional functionality with Autopark, Auto Lane Change, Summon and Navigate on Autopilot. An additional

option is Full Self-Driving Capability, which includes all the functionality of Basic Autopilot and Enhanced Autopilot, alongside the latest upcoming features. Today’s current Autopilot features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous.

Riding on 19-inch sports alloys, the Model 3 is loaded with safety gear, including eight surround view cameras for 360-degree vision, and twelve ultrasonic sensors, which can detect surrounding objects.Forward-facing radar see through heavy rain, fog, dust, and beyond the vehicle ahead helping to prevent accidents by providing simultaneous visibility in every direction. The 2021 Tesla Model 3 was also awarded a 5-star NCAP safety rating overall and in every category.

Conclusion The Model 3 feels different than other cars and has elements which will become part of motoring in the future. It captures your imagination and you feel you’re in a car which has been created free from the constraints of conventional automotive thinking. Plus, there’s a real sense of fun here, playing games on the huge 15-inch screen with your son while charging on the go being a highlight. If you have the budget the model 3 is well worth a look. 30

FERRARI COMPETIZIONE
T
he 812 Competizione, the new limited-edition special series car derived from the 812 Superfast, was presented recently to media, clients and fans all over the world. In the course of the event, which was broadcast live on Ferrari’s social media channels, the wraps were also whipped off the 812 Competizione A, a spectacular Targa-top version, again a limited-series and a homage to the Prancing Horse’s glorious open-top tradition. The presentation took place in a very special venue, the recently-opened GT Sporting Activities Department located alongside the Fiorano track, further strengthening the inextricable link between Maranello’s road-going sports cars and the peerless racing DNA developed as a result of over seven decades of success on the world’s circuits. The launch began with the 812 Competizione completing several laps of the circuit to give viewers a full appreciation of the car’s forms in this dynamic and high performance context in addition, of course, to hear the unmistakeable sound of Ferrari’s iconic naturally-aspirated V12. After the hot laps Enrico Galliera, Ferrari’s Chief Marketing & Commercial Officer, officially presented the car and then unveiled the 812 Competizione A. This duo of cars is dedicated to a very exclusive group of collectors and enthusiasts of the most noble of Ferrari traditions, which focuses on uncompromising maximum performance. The innovative technological concepts applied to the engine, vehicle dynamics and aerodynamics have raised the bar to new heights. Once behind the wheel of the 812 Competizione and the 812 Competizione A, the driver becomes one with the car, regardless of whether it is on road or track. The car guarantees instantaneous responsiveness to commands and absolute control even in the most complex of manoeuvres. Maximum fun behind the wheel and driving exhilaration are ensured at all speeds, thanks in great part to the new independent, four-wheel steering, which delivers exceptional agility and precision in cornering. Powertrain The 812 Competizione and 812 Competizione A sport the most exhilarating V12 on the automotive scene and is derived from the multi-award-winning engine powering the 812 Superfast. The result is a naturally-aspirated 830 cv engine that pairs impressive power with electrifying delivery and the inimitable soundtrack that Ferrari V12 purists know well. To boost the output of the engine, which has the same 6.5-litre displacement as the 812 Superfast’s V12, several areas have been significantly re-engineered to achieve a new record red line while optimising the fluid-dynamics of the intake system and combustion, and reducing internal friction. Maximum revs are now 9,500 rpm which, together with a rising crescendo of torque delivery, unleashes a feeling of progressive and boundless power and acceleration. A result delivered by the meticulous redesign of key engine components such as the con-rods, pistons, crankshaft and distribution. The titanium con-rods are 40% lighter than steel ver-

FERRARI COMPETIZIONE sions whilst delivering the same mechanical resistance; the piston pins, on the other hand, have been given a diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating to reduce the coefficient of friction to the benefit of performance, fuel consumption and wear. These modifications are combined with a rebalanced crankshaft, which is also 3 percent lighter than the previous version. The most significant improvements, however, are to the distribution and the cylinder heads, which have both been completely redesigned. The cams (which now feature DLC coating) now action the valve stems via DLC-coated steel sliding finger followers, which are derived from Ferrari’s F1 experience and were developed specifically for this engine to provide a higher lift profile. To ensure that the engine breathes correctly across the entire rev range, the intake system was redesigned: both manifold and plenum are now more compact to reduce the overall length of the tracts, thus delivering more power at high revs, while the torque curve is optimised at all engine speeds by a system of variable geometry inlet tracts. This enables the length of the intake tract assembly to be continuously modified, adapting it to the firing order to maximise the dynamic charge in the cylinder. The result is an engine that revs with tremendous speed all the way to the cut off with no drop off towards the red line. To reduce friction and mechanical losses, thereby improving the engine’s overall efficiency, the engineers developed a new variable-displacement oil pump that continuously adjusts oil pressure across the engine’s entire operating range. Another important point to underscore
34
www.motorsireland.ie
is the adoption of a less viscous oil (Shell Helix 5W40) than used on previous V12s and the improvement in the flow rate throughout the entire oil scavenge line. The direct fuel injection management strategy has been further developed to keep abreast with increasingly stringent emissions regulations. The calibration of the timing and amount of fuel injected, as well as an increase in injection pressure, have reduced emissions and the generation of particulate, especially when the engine is cold. The ignition system is constantly monitored by the ECU which has an ion-sensing system that measures ionising currents to control ignition timing: it has a single and a multi-spark function to the benefit of smooth, flexible torque delivery. The ECU also controls combustion in the chamber to ensure that the engine is always working at peak thermodynamic efficiency, something also achieved in part by a sophisticated strategy that recognises the octane rating of the fuel being used. To maintain the traditional incredibly high standard of engine sound to which Ferrari V12 owners are accustomed, whilst simultaneously introducing a GPF (Gasoline Particulate Filter) to the exhaust system that ensures compliance with the very latest emissions regulations, the engineers added a new exhaust tailpipe. This unusual and innovative design solution reinstates the medium-high frequency sound muffled by the use of the GPF. In order to deliver excellent acoustics, performance and aesthetics, the exhaust tailpipes are visible to underscore their function and the car’s track-inspired character wi-
thout impinging on the signature elegance of all Ferraris. Work was also carried out on the intake tract to which a second pair of resonators was added to enhance specific frequencies and the engine’s more noble combustion order harmonics, creating the perfect melding of the sound from the exhaust and from the intake system. Both the 812 Competizione and 812 Competizione A are equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, pushing the performance of the latter to new extremes and delivering a new gearshift feeling for the V12. Calibration of the control strategies has reduced shift times by a further 5 percent. Although it retains the same gear ratios as the 812 Superfast, the new car’s changes are even more sporty, thanks to the extra 500 rpm in maximum revs allowed by the new V12. Hand-in-hand with the performance boost comes further fine-tuning of the cars’ respect of emissions norms with an evolution of the HELE system, which enables an on-themove Start&Stop function, and a series of emissions-reducing engine maps, which maintain the signature Ferrari V12 sound even at low speeds. When the HELE is deactivated, performance driving-oriented maps return with lightning fast gear-shifting for maximum response. The cooling system has also been adapted to cope with the additional heat generated by the new engine’s extra 30 cv, resulting in the introduction for the very first time on a Ferrari V12 of a single front air intake that maximises the amount air of cooling air channelled towards the radiators. The entire coolant circuit has also been improved, increasing cooling efficiency by 10 percent compared to the 812 Superfast. In addition, the single air intake has been further optimised to improve the fluid dynamics of the engine intake manifold, thereby minimising charge losses along the tract. Lastly, the engine oil tank was redesigned to cope with the extra flow (up by 30 percent) and to cope with the car’s greater lateral and longitudinal acceleration. Thanks to the optimisation of the interior chambers and volumes,
the new tank saves over one kilo of oil compared to the 812 Superfast, making the 812 Competizione and the 812 Competizione A the cars that require the least oil in the current V12 range. In the final analysis, this also contributes to the overall reduction in the car’s kerb weight. Aerodynamics The increase in both the 812 Competizione’s engine output and maximum revs have resulted in a consequent increase in the heat to be dissipated. To meet these new demands, the efficiency of the cooling flow management has been improved without increasing the dimensions and weight of the radiating masses. While on the 812 Superfast, the engine air intakes are set either side of the large central grille, the 812 Competizione adopts an integrated solution with a single air duct. This allowed the intake for the engine radiators to be extended sideways as far as the chassis allowed as well as reducing not just weight, but also losses to the intake plenum and thus the combustion chamber, which in turn, improved the overall performance. The evacuation of the hot air coming off the radiator was improved by exploiting both the vents on the bonnet either side of the central ‘blade’, and the louvers in the wings. These areas are particularly efficient in terms of cooling and so allowed the designers to optimise and reduce the apertures on the underbody, all to the benefit of the efficiency of the front aero. All of this translates into 10 percent more efficient cooling of the engine fluids than in the 812 Superfast. Vehicle Dynamics The guidelines in the development of the 812 Competizione’s performance strategy were to boost overall performance levels, improve driving pleasure in lateral dynamics and a specific focus on the handling characteristics of a special version. The 812 Competizione debuts many innovative components and contents, which have ensured it delivers on its 35
FERRARI COMPETIZIONE vehicle dynamics performance targets. Specifically, these include the first use of independent four-wheel steering, the evolution of the Side Slip Control (SSC) system to version 7.0, and the development of the dedicated new Michelin Cup2R tyres. The independent rear-wheel steering features a new electronic management system that enables the right and left actuators to be actioned individually rather than synchronised. This evolution yields a significant boost in performance in relation to the control of the position demanded of the individual actuators, and quicker response times. This system emphasises the front axle’s response to steering wheel commands, maintaining the feeling of grip from the rear axle, which responds promptly to front inputs, and also manages the car’s lateral dynamics response more efficiently as a function of the actuation frequency of the steering wheel angle. The new solution has resulted in the evolution of the SSC system which brings together all of the control systems developed in-house and uses a shared dynamic control language to integrate the actions of all of the systems to improve efficiency. The Side Slip Control 7.0 spans the electronic differential (E-Diff 3.0), traction control (F1-Trac), SCM-Frs magnetorheological suspension control, brake pressure control when driving on the limit (FDE) available in Race and CT-Off Manettino settings, and the Virtual Short Wheelbase 3.0 which integrates the electric front steering with the electronically controlled independent rear-wheel steering. Particular attention was also paid to making the car as light as possible, which resulted in 38 kg being slashed off its overall weight compared to the 812 Superfast. The areas primarily involved were the powertrain, running gear and bodyshell. Carbon-fibre was used extensively on the exterior, especially on the front bumpers, rear bumpers, rear spoiler and air intakes. The powertrain contributions to weight reduction came from the use of titanium con-rods coupled with a lighter crankshaft and a 12V lithium-ion battery. Great attention was also paid to the design of the cockpit with the extensive use of carbon-fibre trim, lightweight technical fabrics and a reduction in sound-proofing. There are also dedicated sporty, lightweight forged aluminium rims and titanium studs. All-carbon-fibre rims are also being made available for the very first time on a Ferrari V12 and offer a total weight reduction of 3.7 kg compared to the lightweight forged 812 Superfast wheels. The inside of the channel and of the spokes is coated in a layer of white aerospace-derived paint that reflects and dissipates heat produced by the car’s extremely efficient braking system, guaranteeing consistent performance over time even under hard use on the track. Exterior The 812 Competizione has a personality all of its own that 36
www.motorsireland.ie
sets it very clearly apart from the 812 Superfast in terms of its proportions and formal balance. The engineering modifications adopted allowed the Ferrari Styling Centre to give the car a whole new connotation, by choosing styling themes that further enhance its architectural design, sculptural forms and sporty vocation. One of the 812 Competizione’s many striking features is its bonnet, which has a transverse groove in which the carbon-fibre blade sits. This proved an original way of disguising the air vents for the engine bay, whilst also increasing their surface area. From a design perspective, the choice of this transverse element rather than the louvres seen on some previous Ferrari sports cars, means that the bonnet looks cleaner and more sculptural. This theme also acts as a three-dimensional interpretation of the concept of livery, recalling the signature stripe across the bonnet that characterises certain historic racing Ferraris. The modified front-end aerodynamics allowed the designers to endow the car with a more aggressive character befitting its limited-edition special status. The car’s nose shows off all of its imposing power with a very wide front grille flanked by the two distinctive and prominent side brake intakes. The carbon-fibre splitter underscores the car’s broad, squat stance, hinting at its impressive road-holding. The most noticeable aspect of the 812 Competizione’s aesthetic is the replacement of the rear screen by an all-aluminium surface. The vortex generators on the upper surface that boost the car’s aerodynamic efficiency simultaneously create a backbone effect that underscores the car’s sculptural forms. Together with the carbon-fibre blade that traverses the bonnet, this motif changes the overall perception of the car’s volume: the car seems more compact than the 812 Superfast, accentuating its powerful, fastback look. Not having a rear screen also creates a textural continuity between roof and spoiler, providing owners with the opportunity to personalise the car even more with a whole new single continuous graphic livery that runs unbroken its entire length. Even the rear spoiler now looks more imposing. It is higher but the specific design treatment used also makes the tail look very wide, almost horizontal, giving the rear greater stance. The extremities of this aerodynamic appendage intersect with the line of the rear wings, highlighting their muscular appearance and referencing iconic cars like the Ferrari 330 P3/P4. The bodywork rear of the crests is fluted and this accentuates the three-dimensionality and distinctiveness of the car’s flanks and their forms. The taillight clusters lend the car a more aggressive and suggestive look. They fit seamlessly into a slit just below the spoiler and contribute to creating the horizontal feel to the rear. The rear bumper is particularly sculptural and characterised by a scoop at wheel height that incorporates two imposing air vents. Three aerodynamic slots have been created along the outer bumper surface rear of the wheels, creating an instantly recognisable styling feature that recalls the shape of the vortex generators on the rear screen.
Cockpit In terms of its interior architecture, the 812 Competizione has remained faithful to the 812 Superfast, retaining the same general parameters and main dash and door panel interfaces, including the latter’s signature “diapason” motif. The door panel itself has been lightened overall both formally and in terms of actual weight to underscore the sportiness of the cockpit. The door panel pocket juts out from the main structure almost as if it were a floating element. This creates a sense of lightness and formal and textural continuity with the rest of the cabin. Only a small appendage that connects to the door handle remains as an armrest, but creates a dynamic muscle on the panel. Right in the central area of the cockpit is a link between Ferrari’s past and future, the iconic gear-gate theme here given a modern twist. This is the first time it has appeared on a V12 car and is very much mirrors the spirit of the 812 Competizione and the marque’s tradition. 812 Competizione A The 812 Competizione A provided the Ferrari Styling Centre with the opportunity to use the modifications required for the rear of the car to create a truly unforgettable
architecture. The flying buttress concept, which has long been a much-loved part of Ferrari tradition, harmonises effortlessly with the arrow theme of the front created by the blade and lends a sense of forward thrust to the car’s body, but also gives it a completely different connotation to the coupé. The car’s centre of gravity appears lower, particularly when seen from the side, not only because of the roof and wraparound windscreen that flows into the side windows, but also because the flying buttresses at the rear are lower than in the 812 Competizione. With the Targa top stowed, the roll bars partly jut out above the rest of the bodywork but because they are carbon-fibre, they become secondary visual elements and so do not compromise the broader, more squat stance created by the flying buttresses. This amplifies the visual lowering of the side view. In the closed configuration, the roll bars connect perfectly with the roof structure forming a seamless unit. The targa top is made from carbon-fibre to create a sense of aesthetic continuity with the roll-bars. In the open-top configuration, it is stowed in a compartment with the same design shape as the targa itself. Being able to stow the top at any time means the car can be enjoyed to the full, whatever the weather. 37

SEAT TARRACO f you’re not obsessed with badge-status, we reckon the Tarraco delivers a great combination of sharp looks and interior design.
There have been a range of exterior enhancements, including special grille with FR logo, wider, black wheel arch mouldings, black roof rails and window frames, and side mirrors finished in Cosmo Grey. The new Tarraco FR gets a new rear spoiler, an exclusive rear diffuser and the rear logo in a handwritten style. 20” alloy wheels complete the look.
The cabin architecture has a great range of shapes and textures, with the Tarraco picking up the Audi-style virtual dashboard – there’s a generously sized 9.2-inch tablet-style touch screen propped up in the centre and it’s finished off with a pair of very curvaceous sports-style seats up front. It’s all surprisingly touchy-feely, which is not always the case with Seat. The FR has a slightly more aggressive suspension setup than the regular Tarraco models, but regardless of model chosen the Seat just seems to offer a sharper dynamic package than the mainstream equivalents

from VW and Skoda. Not an especially sporty one, because it’s a large family seven-seat SUV. But still satisfying, especially with the combination of that 150hp engine and suspension setup. The Tarraco impresses as a highly cohesive package that offers something a little different to others in the Volkswagen Group – without being different enough to scare conservative buyers away. The Tarraco is closely related to both the VW Tiguan Allspace and the Skoda Kodiaq, being based on the group’s MBQ-A2 platform and sharing mechanical underpinnings. It is also built on the same production line in Wolfsburg as the Tiguan. The Tarraco is available in 5 or 7 seat models, with 7 seat versions starting from €41,295. In Ireland buyers can choose from three well equipped trim levels: SE, Xcellence and FR. The FR models start from €47,365, building on the Tarraco’s healthy specification with even more features and a sporty makeover inside and out. Power comes from a 1.5-litre TSI turbo petrol with 150 hp or a 2.0-litre diesel with 150 hp – or 200 hp and four wheel drive. The Tarraco is all about being family friendly with a spacious interior, and it delivers in this regard – to a de-

In reality, it doesn’t feel massively different to drive to the other two, however it does feel a little firmer on rough surfaces and has more responsive steering. Conclusion If you want a family car that still feels special to drive, the Seat Tarraco is a very appealing option, and even though the Tarraco is a large SUV and arguably the type of car where a sporty drive is the least important factor, it still won’t leave you disappointed. Despite being a high-riding model, it still has quite a sporty stance, and with minimal body roll and sharp steering, it’s undoubtedly one of the best cars to drive in its class.

If you’ll be using it as a five-seater with a big boot and two occasional kids’ seats, you won’t be disappointed. There’s ample head and legroom in the first two rows, plenty of Isofix points, a sliding middle row and a large boot. There’s also additional extra storage throughout with large cubbyholes, cupholders and storage areas. PEUGEOT e-2008
The e-2008 doesn’t move around too much, feels planted, grippy and its steering is surprisingly precise. Once you overcome the slight hint of understeer, you’ll find this to be a remarkably sporty little vehicle – certainly much more fun to drive than its internal combustion engine siblings. It’s also reasonably quick, with a zero to 100 km/h time of 8.3 seconds. The instant torque definitely helps, especially around town. You feel like you’re in something quicker, as long as you don’t keep the throttle floored beyond 100 km/h. Once you cross that threshold, the e-2008 starts running out of power on demand if it’s high-speed overtaking you want. Its top speed is 150 km/h. If you want to gain access to the full 100 kW (134 HP), to go with 300 Nm of torque then switch to sports mode. It doesn’t feel all that different though to Normal mode around town at least but it is punchier. This brings us to range, and this is where it gets a bit tricky, because while you can “theoretically” travel 320 km on a single charge in the WLTP cycle, you’ve only got a 50 kWh battery, so those 320 km are what you might call a best case scenario. If you fancy some spirited driving you’ll probably need to charge your e-2008 once every 3-4 workdays – and you’ll need fast charging in order to top the battery to 80% in about 30 min or so. Conclusion The e-2008 is probably the most fun 2008 to ride in the whole range. With no engine vibration and a smooth 8-speed automatic transmission and no engine roar as soon as it exceeds 3,500 rpm it would be my pick. The Peugeot e-2008 shines with its comfort of use combined with a good chassis. The electric motor has enough punch with its 136 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque to move this SUV comfortably.

“
I can still win against the world’s best” In an exclusive interview Porsche Brand Ambassador Angelique Kerber speaks about her sensational comeback, her passion for tennis and why, after the departure of her coach, she will be taking on more responsibility in the 2022 season.
Angelique, after your successes in the past few months, what are your feelings going into the off-season? Angelique Kerber: “I’m feeling good and am pretty confident. I’ve just had an incredibly good second half to the year. I won in Bad Homburg, was in the Wimbledon and Cincinnati semifinals and also played well at the US Open. At the Billie Jean King Cup in Prague, I also beat a grand slam winner again. I also know I can still win against the world’s best.” All this after the season began inauspiciously after being quarantined before the Australian Open. How did you get over it? Kerber: “Locked up for two weeks in a hotel room is unbelievably tough. Afterwards, it took me months to return to the form the good pre-season preparations had got me into. Being quarantined cost me a few tournaments. All the nicer for me therefore that I turned things around in the second half of the season and was able to perform at my best again.” What made the impressive comeback possible? Kerber: “The key was definitely the return of the fans and the confidence I had in myself and my potential. It was something I also never lost in the difficult times. Fighting back after being down is somehow a part of my career. I had lots of patience in myself and always believed I could succeed once again. Having the feeling of being able to beat top players and be in the mix for the major titles was extremely important for me.” Did you ever have any doubts? Kerber: “As an athlete, one always somehow has doubts. It’s a part of things. But the trick is to draw positive energy and remotivate oneself to fulfil one’s goals.” What was the turning point? Kerber: “For sure the tournament in Bad Homburg. I had been looking forward to the grass court season the whole time. When I then won the Bad Homburg Open, to boot in front of a home crowd with a goose-bump feeling, really was a liberating feeling. My semifinal in Wimbledon then proved I was back to where I had wanted to be before the start of the season. In Bad Homburg, you were not only a player but also one of the organisers. What kind of experience was it for you? Kerber: “It was all very exciting and simultaneously a completely new experience. For me, it was amazingly interesting to see what happens behind the scenes at such a tournament and also to chip in with my experiences as a player. With Porsche, we also had a long-term partner of mine backing us. It made many things a bit easier and it contributed to the success of the tournament. The feedback from all the stakeholders was very positive and I’m already looking forward to next year.” You’re back in the Top 10 after a long time. Where should your journey take you in 2022? Kerber: “I’m not somebody that keeps looking at the world rankings. They’re no longer so important for me. The main thing is that I play well, have my heart in everything and then everything else comes automatically. I want to
49
ANGELIQUE KERBER be in the mix for the titles at big tournaments. That’s my motivation.” Your coach Torben Beltz will leave the team ahead of the 2022 season. After such a good second half to the season, what are your targets going into the next phase of your career and what new impulses are you hoping for? Kerber: “I can look back positively on the past season. I invested lots of strength and energy to get to where I am now. For me, the next step when starting the season in
50
www.motorsireland.ie
Australia will be all about continuing where I left off. After Torben’s departure from the team, it also means that I would like to take on more responsibility. I’m very grateful for our time together and for everything we experienced and achieved as a team. It’s a new phase of my career that I’m about to enter now, whereas I’m fortunate to say that the rest of my team remains unchanged. In all the years, I’ve learnt how important it can be to have new impulses after a certain amount of time for one to continue competing at a top level.”
“It’s a new phase of my career that I’m about to enter now.”
After so many years at the top, what gives you the motivation and strength of mind to continue to practice hard and work on your game? Kerber: “My passion for tennis. I love the sport, the feeling of standing on the court and winning. The emotions give me confidence in my performance and the respect of other players. Most of them know they have to play their best tennis to beat me. I’ve worked hard in the past six months to regain that respect. I’ll be doing everything so that it stays that way.” What positive impressions have you returned home with from the Billie Jean King Cup? Kerber: “I naturally hoped I’d reach the semifinals with Porsche Team Germany. Having said that, the win against Barbora Krejcikova, the French Open winner, was hard-fought and fantastic confirmation of my good form in the past months. Additionally, our newcomers to the big tennis stage both put on a good show. Jule Niemeier and Nastasja Schunk, who are both still supported in the Porsche Talent Team, will have definitely taken away lots of positives from the week. It makes me very confident when it comes to Germany’s juniors. Jule and Nasti belong to our group of young players that have the potential of competing at the top. One however can’t expect it to happen tomorrow. But they are both on the right track.”

LAMBORGHINI JALPA

T
LAMBORGHINI JALPA his year, Lamborghini celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Jalpa, presented for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1981.
The Jalpa is the final development of the Urraco and Silhouette project, retaining the general architecture, but equipped with a larger engine, increased to 3.5 litres. The line, with the Targa opening roof, was designed by Frenchman Marc Deschamps of Carrozzeria Bertone, where he was style director from 1980, and directly influenced and partially designed by Giulio Alfieri, who was General Manager and Technical Director of Lamborghini at the time. The most significant technical innovation on the Jalpa is the final evolution of the 90° V8 engine, made completely of aluminum, with four chain-controlled overhead camshafts, originally installed on the Urraco and Silhouette.
The Jalpa prototype, the car presented in Geneva, has a special story. It is based on a Silhouette which, once produced, was never sold. It went back to the factory and was used as the basis for the new model. The Jalpa presented in Geneva in 1981 is easily recognisable by its special metallic bronze colour and has some unique aesthetic features that were not used on the production car. The Jalpa, which entered into production in 1982, has a semi-supporting steel body, and black bumpers and engine air intakes, as well as horizontal rear lamps and 16” alloy wheels, taken directly from the Athon prototype, with Pirelli P7 low-profile tyres. The interior of the Jalpa is luxuriously finished, with the extensive use of leather and carpeting. The opening roof, designed to facilitate removal and reassembly, can be stored in a special space behind the rear seats. In the numerous road tests that appeared in specialist magazines at the time, experts enthusiastically

described its straightforward, engaging, and uncompromising road handling. At the 1984 Geneva Motor Show, the “second series” Jalpa was presented, featuring some aesthetic modifications, such as the bumpers and air intakes in the same colour as the bodywork, rounded rear lamps, and revamped interior. The commercial life of the Jalpa ended in 1988 after the production of 420 cars. It was the last Lamborghini sedan produced with a V8 engine and historically it is the last sports car of this class to feature this particular engine displacement and positioning. Conceptually, the Jalpa is the direct predecessor of the 2003 Gallardo, which was to become one of the most sold Lamborghini cars in history.
Units produced Lamborghini Jalpa: 1981-1987, 420 Lamborghini, inaugurated in 2015, is the division of Automobili Lamborghini responsible for preserving the historic identity of the company from Sant’Agata Bolognese. The main services provided by Polo Storico include the certification and restoration of all Lamborghini cars produced up to 2001. In addition, it is responsible for the preservation and acquisition of new sources for the company archives, which makes it possible to establish and preserve the value of all classic Lamborghinis. Finally, because of the requests made by classic Lamborghini enthusiasts, particular attention is given to reconstructing spare parts that are no longer available on the market.

MERCEDES GLC DE HYBRID
T
he Mercedes GLC 300 de is a diesel plug-in hybrid that brings Three-Pointed Star quality to the growing segment for premium-badged upper mid-sized luxury SUVs. The Mercedes-Benz GLC premium compact SUV was introduced in 2015. In 2019, the SUV was given a facelift for the 2020 model year. The GLC SUV includes two plug-in hybrid options, a petrol/electric and a diesel/ electric option. The GLC 300de we drove mates a 2.0-litre diesel unit with a 90kW electric motor that when fully charged is able to achieve up to 43.5km of WLTP-rated all-electric driving at speeds of up to 130km/h. If overall efficiency isn’t a priority, the GLC 300de can also be quite powerful, thanks to a total output of 306hp, enough to dispatch from 0 to 100km/h in 6.2s en route to 230km/h. There’s a substantial 400Nm of torque on offer and our test vehicle comes with 4MATIC 4WD and the powertrain works through a 9-speed auto gearbox which works with the usual ‘Dynamic Select’ ‘Eco’, ‘Comfort’ and ‘Sport’ driving modes that alter drive response, steering feel and ESP settings. The Mercedes-Benz GLC range starts off with the 194hp 2.0-litre turbodiesel rear-wheel-drive GLC 220 d model, which has a starting price of €54,425. That model comes with a standard interior and exterior, according to Mercedes. You can upgrade to a model with an Exclusive interior for €56,449, or one with an Exclusive interior and ‘Off Road’ exterior for €59,554. Standard equipment includes 18-inch alloys, an electric tailgate, LED headlamps, a three-spoke sports steering wheel, synthetic leather seats called Artico upholstery, analogue instruments with a 5.5-inch colour digital display between them, keyless start, rain-sensing wipers, live traffic information for the navigation, a reversing camera and the smallest MBUX screen in the centre of the dash, controlled by a trackpad between the front seats. Upgrading to the Exclusive interior gets you heated front seats, improved cabin trim, ambient cabin lighting and velour floor mats. The Off Road exterior pack adds cutaway bumpers which offer better approach angles when driving over rough terrain plus a lower protection panel finished in silver, heat-insulated glass and slightly raised-up suspension The very popular AMG Line version starts at €60,763, which includes 19-inch wheels, visible exhaust pipes rather than under bumper on standard models, an AMG-style grille and exterior body kit, cross-drilled brake discs with upgraded calipers, and sports suspension and steering. The interior gets AMG-style contrast stitching, aluminium trim and piano-black lacquer. The GLC 220 d has CO2 emissions varying from 151g/km for basic models, up to 170g/km depending on the choice of wheels and optional equipment. The next step is to upgrade to a 4Matic four-wheel-drive model, which starts from €57,090 in standard form; €59,114 for the Exclusive interior; and €62,299 for the Off Road exterior. The 220 d AMG Line 4Matic starts at €63,508. CO2 emissions run from 156- to 190g/km. Following this is the more powerful 300 d model, which uses the same core 2.0-litre diesel engine, but has 245hp. That starts at €62,040 for the standard variant, rising to €71,025 for the AMG Line. All versions of the 300 d come with 4Matic four-wheel drive as standard. There are petrol options too - a 258hp GLC 300 4Matic with standard interior starts at €71,825, rising to €76,820 for the AMG Line version. CO2 emissions are reasonable at 171190g/km for this engine. If it’s power you desire, you can go for the €84,985, 367hp turbo V6 GLC 43 AMG model, with 4Matic and more than 191g/km of CO2, or the 510hp twin-turbo V8-engined Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S, with its €140,520 price tag. For plug-in hybrids. These start at €66,420 for the petrol-based GLC 300 e, which has CO2 emissions of 51-80g/km, and 320hp or €62,843 for the diesel 300 de (50g/km) as tested here. Conclusion The Mercedes-Benz GLC 300de is an SUV ideal for family buyers with a green element. It would be possible to run this vehicle all the time on electricity if you were only driving short distances and plugging in appropriately. Even if you don’t, you still get a capable luxury vehicle with plenty of room for the kids in the back and the right badge on the bonnet if those sorts of things mean something to you.

THE CAR BUYING ENVIRONMENT INTO 2022
Conor O’Boyle, Co-founder (left) & Shane Ennis, CPO, Sweep (right) 58
www.motorsireland.ie
In the market for a car or van in the year ahead? If that is you and it has been a while since you were last ready for a change, then be prepared for a market that is markedly different for car buying and arguably for financing as well. Unsurprisingly, the changes have been driven by the global pandemic. Over the last twenty four months, the word ‘unprecedented’ has been linked to COVID-19 and its impact socially, economically, digitally and most of all in peoples’ health and welfare. Pretty much no area of our daily lives has been unchanged by the pandemic. People shunned public transport in favour of cars, often used cars, and many of these purchases were started and sometimes concluded online. The shift to a digital car buying and financing journey has accelerated. Dealer showrooms have reopened, but the reality is that discovering their car and dealer is happening online for more people. Similarly, financial services have moved increasingly online. The Rising Price of Used Vehicles An unexpected change for many has been the rise in used car prices. As car makers worldwide shut during lockdown periods, so did other vital parts of their supply chains. In short, essential microchips, which feature multiple times in most new cars, have been in short supply globally. The result has been a long wait for new car buyers, with delays of up to six months reported by some retailers. Lengthy delays in the availability of new cars have seen potential buyers switch to used vehicles. Now, add to this demand from people switching away from public transport. When combined with traditional used car buyers, many of whom delayed a purchase during initial lockdown periods and we see strong consumer demand. However, this is not being matched by supply. Almost two years of sluggish new car sales have and will continue to limit nearly-new supply levels. Used car supply from the UK is down around 35 percent as the UK experiences similar supply/demand issues. The result has been unprecedented used car price inflation, with dealers having to pay well over the odds for what vehicles are available. Right now, there is less stock on dealer forecourts and inevitably, it has risen in price. According to a report in October, used car prices had risen nearly 50% higher than they were just before the onset of the pandemic in January 2020. Looking to 2022, there is little sign that used car values will realign to previous levels any time soon; the supply issues look set to be a feature well into the year and quite possibly beyond. The positive news for would-be car buyers is that if they have a car to partexchange, its value will also have risen. However, without a partexchange would-be buyers may need to realign their budgets. The Importance and Challenge of Car Financing When it comes to budgeting, for the vast majority of car buyers, this will involve sourcing finance. An estimated 80 percent of people will need to borrow money from one source or another to finalise their purchase. The lending market has also seen change over recent times.
59
BLUESTONE The two primary sources of finance are personal loans and dealer finance. Typically, personal loans are ‘unsecured’ where dealer finance is ‘secured’ on the vehicle. An unsecured loan carries a higher risk for a lender and tends to be more easily accessed by the most creditworthy. The security of the car with dealer finance commonly results in a higher acceptance level; in short, overall, people are more likely to be approved for dealer finance. In terms of interest rates, it is essential for buyers to be aware that interest rates may vary depending upon the perceived risk of the customer. Higher rates can apply to less creditworthy applicants, and with some loan rates, the interest rate can vary depending on the overall base rate, whereas others might be fixed for the duration of the agreement. The key message for buyers is always to ensure you understand the details of the finance being offered. The Impact of the Pandemic on Car Financing As often happens in times of economic turbulence, the pandemic saw many lenders retrench and restrict their lending activities. In 2021, two notable banks even went an extra step and announced that they would withdraw entirely from the Irish market. While mainstream lenders have returned to the market, the impact of the pandemic on many peoples’ lives financially has been significant, weakening their credit status. For all
Donal Murphy, Managing Director, Bluestone Motor Finance
too many, the legacy impact on their finances and for their longer-term credit status is likely to remain for some time. However, there are specialist car finance providers who may be able to help such people and enable them to start rebuilding their credit status at the same time. The key for such people is to begin by considering carefully and realistically what they can afford and taking a structured approach to how they apply for finance. Simply applying to a range of lenders could see such applications being rejected and people should be aware that such declines could weaken the applicant’s credit status even further. The Role of Specialist Car Finance When it comes to car financing, Ireland has seen the emergence of specialist lenders, including lenders who can consider people that traditional lenders might underserve. One of these is award-winning motor finance lender Bluestone Motor Finance. The business’ Managing Director Donal Murphy is very clear that Bluestone is happy to consider a very broad range of would-be car buyers, opting to buy a car from a dealer, noting;” “We are open to helping pretty much all car and van buyers, provided you are over 21 years of age. This includes; people with a perfect track record, poor or no credit history, people with past or unresolved debt issues, those who might never have used credit previously, people who have moved to Ireland recently, self-employed people, small and medium-sized businesses. At Bluestone, we bridge the digital/human divide when it comes to car finance, combining digital expertise with one-to-one good old-fashioned conversations to get to know people and their circumstances where appropriate. We don’t stop at the ‘computer says no’ and while we cannot always say yes, I believe we go that extra mile whenever we can.” It is an approach that has seen Bluestone helping a record number of car buyers over the last twelve months. Donal’s Tips on Applying for Finance When it comes to financing a car or van, the majority of people do need to borrow some or all of the money to make their plans a reality. A number of options are available, including the type of Hire Purchase agreement with an interest rate set at the outset which is what Bluestone offers.” Before applying for finance, it is essential to consider what you can afford on a monthly basis and your credit status. In terms of interest rates, the best car finance deals tend to be available to the most creditworthy people or, in the case of a new car or van, may relate to a special offer backed by the car manufacturer. In all circumstances: • Take time to understand the car finance options available to you • Be realistic on your monthly budget • Read all the paperwork to understand the terms and conditions • Assess lender reviews such as those available at Trustpilot

Prepare any evidence that may be required, such as proofs of address and income Avoid multiple credit applications – it can weaken your credit rating Be honest with the lender And finally, if you don’t know, ask questions, reputable lenders like Bluestone will always seek to provide answers transparently
As Donal reflects; “Talking to a lender, such as Bluestone, early in the process for help and guidance can make the whole journey so much easier and help to avoid the risk of buying just on the emotional appeal of a car that ultimately may not be affordable.” Technology in Car Buying & Financing Today While Bluestone is happy to talk to car buyers about their financing plans, around 90 percent of car buyers rely on online searches to discover their next car or van before making purchase decisions. It can also be the place where they discover their finance and enjoy a complete end-toend, self-serve car buying and financing experience. The fast-growing used car marketplace Sweep is an online app offering over 20,000 vehicles from over 500 of Ireland’s trusted dealerships. It provides a distinctive, highly tailored online car buying experience that in just eighteen months has captured tens of thousands of active monthly users. It has teamed up with Bluestone Motor Finance to provide a financing option that people can use where and when it suits them. As Sweep’s CPO Shane Ennis observes, it is an ideal link that is helping both highly creditworthy people and those whose credit status may not make their financing journey as straightforward as they might like.
“The Sweep car buying experience fully focuses on helping the TikTok generation find and buy cars. The car-buying journey is distinctly different and more immersive. Access to finance is a critical part of the journey for most car buyers. By collaborating with Bluestone Motor Finance, we have added digital access to finance with a real-life human touch which means that more people will be able to gain that all-important finance approval.” Sweep is unique in that it has been purpose-built to meet the reality that most internet traffic is now mobile-based. The innovative app is designed to be easy and seamless to use, enabling people to discover vehicles that match their requirements quickly. Customers can shortlist the cars they like and get rid of the cars they don’t like. It means they won’t keep seeing the same vehicles they have already swiped left on. The app shows prospective buyers one car at a time, and by swiping right, a car is added to favourites to be considered, swipe left and it will be hidden. Once a car is shortlisted, car buyers can message the dealer via in-app messaging and all communication is directed back into the app. In short, it is all elegantly simple.

OPEL MOKKA-e
nstead of going down the route of designing a bespoke electric SUV (like Skoda and Volkswagen did with the Enyaq iV and ID.4, Opel is effectively offering electric power as just another engine option for the Mokka SUV bringing normality to the fact of buying an electric car. Aside from a few ‘e’ badges and a charging port instead of a fuel filler, there isn’t a whole lot to differentiate the Mokka-e from the regular Mokka. The new Opel Mokka goes on sale from €23,295 plus delivery related charges. For the first time it will be available as an all-electric model – the Opel Mokka-e – along with petrol and diesel versions. Available in SC, SRI and Elite trims, standard equipment on the entry level SC trim includes enhanced traffic sign recognition, lane keep assist, collision avoidance sensor with brake assist, pedestrian detection alert, electronic cruise control with speed limiter, rear parking sensors with rear view camera, air conditioning, 7” colour touchscreen, 7” colour driver instrument cluster, DAB radio and 16” alloy wheels. The sporty SRI trim, retailing from €24,795 plus delivery, gains heated driver and front passenger seats, electronic climate control, rain sensing front windscreen wipers, electro-chrome rear view mirror, auto lights, front centre armrest, sports alloy pedals, SRI red interior trim, leather-effect seat trim, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 2 additional USB ports in the rear, a black painted roof, tinted rear window privacy glass, 17” alloy wheels and LED front fog lamps. The luxurious Elite trim, retailing from €27,795 plus delivery, adds driver seat massage function, leather upholstery, 10” colour touchscreen with navigation, an enhanced 12” multi-colour driver instrument cluster and 17” bi-colour black alloy wheels. Available across all three trims, petrol and diesel engines offer power outputs ranging from 100 hp to 130 hp. Available in SRI and Elite trims, the all-electric Opel Mokka-e produces 100kW (136 hp) and 260 Nm maximum torque. In the WLTP cycle, the 50 kWh battery enables a range of up to 324 kilometres before recharging is required. A 100 kW DC fast-charger replenishes 80% of the battery in just 30 minutes. Opel offers an eight-year/160,000km warranty for the battery. James Brooks, Managing Director at Leeson Motors, Opel Importer in Ireland, said: “The arrival of the new Opel Mokka, together with the Crossland, heralds the beginning of an exciting new era for the Opel brand. across the tall, broad bonnet. It feels tough and confident from behind the wheel, and the central spine running down the bonnet is a neat visual detail. The dashboard is as fresh as the outside. Designed around two infotainment screens, the central one is brilliantly angled towards the driver rather than set flat into the dash, creating a wraparound feel. It’s easy to reach and use, and such a transformative detail. The height of the dashboard,
combined with a tall shoulder line for the side windows, gives a safe, cocooned feel behind the wheel. There’s a good amount of storage space and Opel have proper buttons and dials for climate control and other essential functions, adding to usability. good accuracy. The 136hp electric motor runs quietly, and in normal mode, delivers just enough power. It doesn’t ‘surge’ as in some EVs, so is easy to control. If you want more pulling power, switch the driving mode into Sport; this also adds a bit more weight to the steering. If your main priority is performance, the Mokka-e doesn’t exactly stand out from the crowd but is more than adequate as a family vehicle in my opinion.
The Mokka-e is an enjoyable drive. I really enjoyed driving it on the local twisting roads. It’s a stable, composed and capable car, with good body control and an impressive ability to remain comfortable even when charging quickly across Country roads. The soft springs translate to a comfortable motorway ride for those longer family journeys. The firm feel from the steering is reassuring too, with
