BUILT FOR A BETTER WORLD

LETTER EDITOR

from the

W

elcome to the latest issue of Motors Ireland. On our cover this issue is the Praga Bohema. The Praga Bohema’s engine is based on Nissan’s famed 3.8-litre, twin-turbo V6 engine used in all its GT-R models since 2007. Initially drawing on Nissan’s experience at Le Mans, it is constructed around an aluminium alloy cylinder block, and there are double overhead camshafts per cylinder bank, with a continuously variable valve timing system on the inlet valves. The beauty of this engine is not just its sheer performance potential, but also its renowned reliability and tunability. Uniquely, Nissan supplies brand new GT-R engines to Praga for the Bohema. Engine development and servicing requirements then sees Praga working with the UK’s renowned Litchfield Engineering; another long-time friend of the Praga brand. Litchfield has more than two decades of tuning experience and is known as the global authority on GT-R engines. Litchfield strips the new engines and convests them to dry sump, which reduces the overall height of the unit by 140 mm. This allows the engine to sit lower in the Bohema and prevents the risks of oil surge under high-speed cornering loads. The Praga Bohema is not cheap and costs from €1.35 million / c£1.17m million with 89 units to be produced by the end of 2027, referencing the company’s victory in the 1000 Miles of Czechoslovakia endurance race 89 years ago. The Czech marque says it will manufacture a maximum of 20 units annually, and will deliver the very first customer example in the first half of 2024. In this edition we also drive the new Audi Q8 e-tron, Toyota Prius, Citroën Ë-C4X, BMW M2, Ford Ranger Raptor, DS7 and MG5. We no doubt have a vehicle reviewed that you have interest in so flick forward to have a read of the full articles. Enjoy the read!

PRAGA BOHEMA

PRAGA BOHEMA

The track-focused Bohema hypercar is ready to hit the road, with production officially underway ahead of first deliveries later this year. 10

www.motorsireland.ie

T

he historic automotive company Praga, currently a global player in various onand off-track racing disciplines around the world, has revealed its all-new road legal hypercar in pre-production prototype form: a high-performance, low-volume, beautifully-appointed car designed around three core principles – lightweight, carbon, petrol. The new Praga Bohema is a sub-1,000 kilogrammes, mid-engined two-seater that, in the right hands, is capable of extreme high performance on track targeting GT3 race car lap times on its semi-slick Pirellis. Yet it is also comfortable and practical for head-turning road trips. With its carbon fibre monocoque and race-oriented fully adjustable suspension, it is extremely light, targeting just 982 kgs (wet without fuel), while its powerful Nissan GT-R-derived six-cylinder twin-turbo engine ensures reliability, ease of servicing and the potential for further performance tuning. Whilst the Bohema’s race-derived semi-automatic transmission will support a unique on-road experience with track-focused performance. The goal? That the Bohema is a uniquely styled, rare and exclusive car that you really can drive to the track, pull on a crash helmet (taken from the bespoke luggage fitted in each of the car’s innovative 50-litre side pods), put in lap after lap at high speed on its Pirelli Trofeo R tyres, and then drive home again. The inspiration? Longstanding Praga friend and ambassador, and former F1 and current IndyCar driver, Romain Grosjean challenged Praga to deliver a genuine uncompromised two-person road/ track performance car, promising a truly unique driver experience. He was subsequently involved in the Bohema project and highlighted the car’s seamless transition from road to track whilst delivering extensive sessions on the challenging six-kilometre Slovakia Ring circuit in recent testing. “I was astonished by the Bohema’s amazing performance on track, its accessibility on road, and the ease of transition between the two,” said Romain. “Praga has truly delivered on my challenge! On the road, you get a smooth ride, the car eliminates the bumps, you can chat with the passenger, and everything is calm and OK. Then simply switch focus and you are on the track. The same clothes, the same car, but the feeling changes and you are pushing the limit and collecting amazing

11

PRAGA BOHEMA

lap times again and again, discovering unbelievable possibilities in the Bohema. And we still have a few months to fine-tune the on-road compliance and on-track lap times!” The result? The Bohema is an all-new design, developed by Praga’s small, but talented team of engineers and designers, and perfected in an F1 team’s wind tunnel. It uses a race-derived carbon fibre monocoque, with extensive aero providing over 900 kgs of downforce at 250 km/h. Top speed is just over 300 km/h: the fastest speed achievable on virtually any racetrack. Crucially, the car’s aerodynamically-inspired engineering has not eliminated elegant and intriguing designed bodywork to ensure the car looks fast, and looks good. High quality machined Praga Gold painted duraluminium details include door hinges and a tow hook featuring an integrated rear-facing camera that stand out on the Praga blue show car and reflect Praga’s attention to detail. The 12

www.motorsireland.ie

Bohema is that rarest of cars with the ‘wow’ factor in both looks and performance. Unlike many racetrack-derived performance cars, the Bohema’s ingenious interior ergonomics delivers a narrow, aerodynamically honed cockpit yet seats two, two-metretall adults with fully adjustable driver’s seat, steering wheel and pedals, generous luggage space, aircon and useful rear visibility. All at less than 1,000 kgs. Praga’s obsession with its sub-tonne target weight is highlighted by the Bohema’s cockpit statistics: structurally designed with 56 individual carbon parts, and trimmed with high-quality Alcantara and leather, the cockpit’s target weight is just 34 kgs. The focus on keeping the Bohema under 1,000 kgs is demonstrated by Praga’s remarkable attention to detail in

every aspect of the design, with extensive use made of carbon fibre, magnesium alloys and titanium. Its independent suspension uses pushrod-operated adjustable dampers mounted horizontally for maximum travel while minimising bodywork height. In such a lightweight car, with just 180 kgs of unsprung mass, Praga’s development engineers have still been able to keep the suspension supple enough for road use without having to resort to expensive adaptive suspension systems. The central-locked wheels are 18in diameter at the front and 19in at the rear to offer on-road compliance through their large tyre walls, but the Bohema will accept 18in wheels all-round, which ensures compatibility with the FIA GT3 spec tyre dimension – the race tyre with the widest possible range of competition tyres globally. The powerful brakes use lightweight but durable 380 mm carbon ceramic discs with six-piston calipers. Powertrain The Praga Bohema’s PL38DETT is based on Nissan’s famed 3.8-litre, twin-turbo V6 engine used in all its GT-R models since 2007. Litchfield strips the new engines and converts them to dry sump, which reduces the overall height of the unit by 140 mm. This allows the engine to sit lower in the Bohema and prevents the risks of oil surge under high-speed cornering loads. Litchfield also makes a number of modifications for increased reliability and power, including swapping to new twin turbos. In this base-Litchfield specification, Praga is targeting the Bohema production car to deliver up to 700 bhp at 6,800 rpm and 725 Nm of torque from 3,000 to 6,000 rpm, but Litchfield is known for building 1000 bhp-plus engines from the GT-R unit. The engine breathes out through exhausts that are titanium right from the turbos to the tailpipes, with much of the silencing provided by the catalytic convertors, giving a sharp crackle to the engine note while remaining within typical circuit noise limits – and ensuring that occupants can still hold a conversation even at well over legal road speed limits.

The Bohema’s engine is mated to the renowned Hewland sequential gearbox through a robotic clutch allowing for semi-automatic drive mode. This choice of gearbox, equipped with bespoke road-optimised helical cut gears, ensures fast-changing, durability and ability to handle high torque at a minimum weight. In classic race car and supercar style, the engine sits directly behind the cockpit, with the transmission behind the engine driving the rear wheels, for optimal weight balance and responsiveness in turns. Crucially, the engine and gearbox are independently mounted from the carbon chassis ensuring annoying and loud sub-woofer style resonance and vibrations are not transferred through to the cockpit from the engine bay. A 74-litre fuel tank ensures road trips can be completed with minimal fuss. Chassis and bodywork The Bohema has been designed and styled completely in-house by the Praga team, using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) modelling followed by fine-tuning in an F1 team’s wind tunnel. Engineers and designers have worked as one, to ensure all surfaces look exciting and elegant yet remain uncompromised in their contribution to aerodynamic efficiency and performance. It is undiluted form and function in harmony. It uses extensive and innovative aerodynamics, including a unique rear spoiler design which, combined, results in over 900 kgs of downforce at 250 km/h. The chassis is an extremely strong, torsionally rigid carbon fibre monocoque construction: in modern times, Praga has only ever designed and built all-carbon race cars, benefitting from the experience and local expertise in carbon fibre manufacturing in the Czech Republic and Slovakia employed by many of Europe’s leading luxury car brands. The lightweight carbon fibre outer panels are attached to the monocoque. The front top panel covers the suspension, with subtle bulges to accommodate the horizontal dampers. At the rear, a single panel covers the engine, transmission and suspension. The front wings are not structural, so the front mirrors are mounted on long rigid stalks to provide stylish and aerodynamic structures with excellent rear vision without vibration or obstruction. Within the aerodynamically styled rear wheel arches there are deep storage areas, for which custom-fit leather luggage is available – big enough for a crash helmet, racing suit and boots, or a casual weekend bag. The doors are front hinged and electronically released, with back-up mechanical releases. The deeply curved trademark Praga windscreen ensures remarkable visibility inside the cockpit, and is swept clean by an ingenious mechanism specially developed by Praga to ensure that the windscreen wiper stays in contact with the glass across its full width.

13

PRAGA BOHEMA

Cockpit With the race-derived carbon fibre monocoque, the cockpit is necessarily narrow but cleverly shaped to perfectly fit two large adults in race-position comfort. The doors swing open giving access over the bodywork into the cockpit, with steps built into the footwells to allow driver and passenger to lower themselves into their seats without having to step onto the seats themselves. Furthermore, the steering wheel is removable to aid entry and exit. The driving position can be perfectly tailored with adjustable steering column, pedal box, and seat position and angle. The ergonomically sculpted structure also incorporates moulded recesses for the passenger’s arms and elbows to ensure comfort without infringing on the driver’s space – a great deal of effort has been made to ensure a perfect driver’s environment. The removable steering wheel in itself is a work of art. It incorporates a large digital display, showing speed, gear selected, oil and coolant temperatures, driving mode and warning lights. To either side is a switchgear for indicators, horn and further functions, plus rotary thumbwheel selectors. The rim is beautifully trimmed in Alcantara and the central pad is covered in leather with an embossed Praga logo. The grip and paddles’ size and positioning have been designed perfectly to offer steering and shift control comfortably for small and large-handed drivers alike. Just to the side of the steering wheel, in the slim centre console, are further controls including launch control, in-built fire extinguisher trigger and the electronic parking brake. To either side of the cockpit are the electronic door releases (supplemented by mechanical releases in the roof) plus mirror controls, while the aircon controls are mounted in a stylish ‘fighter jet’ style roof console: Praga’s design team taking inspiration from the company’s aviation and race car divisions. An ingenious and hidden sprung-mount bracket above the centre console allows a smart phone to be securely mounted for use as a satnav and performance data monitor. There are storage pockets in the doors and behind the seats to ensure bottles and oddments can be safely stashed out of the way. While everything in the cockpit is designed to contribute to the car’s low weight target and functionality, the aesthetics and attention to detail have not been overlooked – the beautifully machined thumbwheels and air vents, the finishing of the interior carbon fibre and the exquisite hand stitching of the Alcantara are perfect examples. The Praga Bohema costs from €1.35 million / c£1.17m million with 89 units to be produced by the end of 2027, referencing the company’s victory in the 1000 Miles of Czechoslovakia endurance race 89 years ago. The Czech marque says it will manufacture a maximum of 20 units annually, and will deliver the very first customer example in the first half of 2024. 14

ALFA ROMEO 33 STRADALE

I

nspired directly by the Tipo 33, a star of global motorsport, the 1967 33 Stradale is believed by many to be one of the most beautiful cars ever. The new 33 Stradale is a respectful modern take on the stylistic features of its forerunner and takes centre stage in the Alfa Romeo manifesto to anticipate some of the brand’s future lines. With a run of just 33 cars, all already snapped up, it has been handcrafted in collaboration with Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera, a coachbuilder with top-quality, tailor-made standards that guarantee an obsessive attention to detail. The new Alfa Romeo can be fitted with a V-6 twin-turbo engine delivering more than 620 horsepower. Routed through an eight-speed DCT gearbox to the rear wheels, an electronic limited-slip differential assists in putting force to ground. The optional BEV configuration delivers more than 750 horsepower with a WLTP range of 450 km. Performance is outstanding in both versions. The top speed is

206 mph/333 km/h with a 0 to 100 km/h time of less than three seconds. The new 33 Stradale boasts the best of Alfa Romeo engineering, with double-arm, active suspension. A front axle lift system enables the lifting of the front when passing obstacles, such as bumps, rails or when entering parking lots or garages, to avoid damage to the bodywork. The driver can activate this function via the “Assetto” (setup) control on the centre console, when driving under 40 km/h. The hydraulic system raises the front axle by nearly 50mm to overcome the obstacle. The system returns to the standard height by manually deactivating the system or when exceeding the set speed limit. Each of the 33 vehicles is designed to be a unique, one-off work of art, thanks to an unprecedented level of customisation. The Alfa Romeo Bottega team has been created to guarantee the uniqueness of each unit. It has involved its customers in the project from the very beginning to create their very own vehicle, with their own unique features. Buyers will expect to pay well over €1 million plus.

T

he high end luxury car market still has an appetite for petrol models, allowing Porsche to update the Panamera to bring it back into the spotlight for 2024. Launching first with an entry-level V6 model and a high performance hybrid-assisted V8 Turbo E-Hybrid, the new Panamera introduces a range of high-tech luxury and sporting features wrapped up in a sleek new look. The Panamera’s design is an evolutionary step forward from the existing model yet actually features new body panels all-round, except for the door skins. The proportions are largely the same, with only a few millimetres difference here and there thanks to reshaped bumpers, but you will notice the sharper lines and more aggressive detailing. The nose is dominated by new angular headlights featuring the same high-end LED lighting technology as introduced on the Cayenne SUV, while around the back there’s a much cleaner light bar, joined by a wider rear glass screen. Wheel sizes sit between 19- and 21-inches, and for the first time Turbo E-Hybrid models will have the option of centre-lock wheels like those on the 911 Turbo S. The cabin has gone through a similar treatment, sharing lots of fundamentals with the previous car, but with an even cleaner design dominated by new digital interfaces and fewer buttons. The previous analogue central rev-counter and flanking screens have been replaced with a curved fully-digital screen, joined by a central 12.3-inch touchscreen and an optional passenger display in the main dash section. In Germany, Porsche is offering the new Panamera from €107,800 (Panamera 4 from €111,900) including VAT and country-specific equipment. The Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid starts from €192,500. Deliveries in Europe will begin in March 2024 and you can check with Porsche Dublin for Irish pricing.

Conceived to take the place of two models now discontinued, the C-Class and E-Class coupés, it has a sleek, athletic appearance with strong sporty overtones that will likely appeal to an even broader base of coupé owners, not least those of a younger generation. The CLE Coupé range will have three models: CLE 220, CLE 300 and CLE 450. Within the mix, choice will include 4-and 6- cylinder versions, mild hybrid petrol and diesel units, 9-speed automatic transmission, 4MATIC all-wheel drive, and AMG variants. As it expands, plug-in hybrid and open-top cabriolet versions

will be added. At launch, mild hybrid models are: a 255hp four-cylinder CLE 300 and a 375hp three-litre, six-cylinder CLE 450 4Matic. Both are equipped with integrated starter-generator running on a 48volt electrical system that provides an extra 23hp boost that reduces turbo lag and smooths-out the start/stop function when the engine is running at low speed. In both models, 9-speed automatic transmission and four wheel drive are available with multilink front and rear suspension. A stiffer sport-tuned suspension, standard on the CLE450, is offered on the CLE 300 with AMG package high performance. Of the models being sold in Ireland initially, prices range from €73,215 for the CLE 220 d.

ith the Audi e-tron, Audi entered the age of electromobility in 2018, marking the start of the electric future for the brand. Since then, the model has been setting standards in the electric luxury-class SUV segment and the new Audi Q8 e-tron is now building on the success story. The Q8 e-tron carries forward the success story of the pioneer Audi e-tron under a new name. With ample luxury class comfort, an optimised drive concept, improved aerodynamics as well as better charging performance and battery capacity, the Q8 e-tron is the flagship model in Audi’s electric SUV and crossover portfolio. Its electric portfolio now comprises eight models. By 2026, it will have more than 20. At that point, Audi will only be releasing fully electric models on the global market. “With our corporate strategy ‘Vorsprung 2030’, we’ve set a fixed date for our withdrawal from combustion engines and clearly decided that Audi will be a fully electric brand within 11 years,” said Markus Duesmann, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG. “The new Audi Q8 e-tron, with its improved efficiency and range and refined design, is another important component in our electric portfolio to get people excited about electromobility with emotional models that are suitable for everyday use.” Audi Board Member for Technical Development Oliver Hoffmann also focused on the customer benefits enhanced by these refinements. “In the new Q8 e-tron, we were able to significantly increase both battery capacity and charging performance. This allowed us to achieve an optimal balance between energy density and charging capacity, as well as to increase efficiency,” Hoffmann said. “On top of that, we improved the motors, progressive steering, and chassis control systems – and thus the dynamic driving characteristics that are typical of Audi in all versions of the Q8 e-tron.”

By calling this model the Q8, Audi is making a clear statement that the Audi Q8 e-tron is the top model among its electric SUVs. It’s immediately identifiable as a fully electric model at first glance. This is thanks to the new front and rear designs that systematically carry Audi’s electric design language forward. As a prestigious electric SUV model from Audi, the Q8 e-tron ushers in the new corporate identity with a two-dimensional design of the logo on the exterior. The model lettering with an Audi logo on the B-pillar is new as well. On the inside, the Q8 e-tron uses the MMI touch response operating system. Its two large high-resolution displays – the top one with a 10.1-inch diagonal and the bottom one with an 8.6-inch diagonal – replace nearly all conventional switches and knobs. Beyond operation with the two touch displays, a lot of features can be activated through natural voice control. The digital display and operating concept in the Audi Q8 e-tron is rounded out by the standard Audi virtual cockpit with full HD resolution. Specific graphics depict all the important aspects of electric driving, from charging performance to range. Three trim levels are available for the Q8 e-tron – Advance, Sport and S Line – all of which come in 50 e-tron and 55 e-tron variants. My Audi Q8 e-tron 50 quattro test car came in the top-spec S Line trim, and was finished in Daytona Grey Pearl paintwork with upgraded 21” 5-arm Aero design wheels in black metallic in lieu of the standard-fit 21” turbine design wheels. Other key standard S Line equipment includes S Line bumpers in full paint finish, anti-theft wheel bolts, ambient lighting package, Matrix LED headlights with dynamic indicators, automatically dimming rear-view mirror, central locking with ‘Keyless Go’, rear privacy glass, heated front seats with 4-way lumbar support, Valcona leather upholstery, inlays in

matte brushed aluminium, leather multi-function sports steering wheel, Audi Virtual Cockpit, navigation system, Audi Sound System, USB ports in rear, Audi Phone Box light, Audi pre-sense (front), camera-based traffic sign recognition, cruise control with speed limiter, lane departure warning, and a reversing camera. I have to admit the Q8 e-tron is better to drive than its predecessor was, thanks to the fact the brand has reworked the steering to have a quicker turning action. And the fact that adaptive air suspension is standard means it offers a comfortable and compliant ride in most situations, though the weight of this vehicle can be clearly felt when you are pushing it in corners. It is undeniably hefty, despite possessing a 51:49 front-to-rear weight distribution and quattro all-wheel drive. Of course, 300kW/664Nm of silent power helps move it effortless and when it comes to acceleration aswell it’s fast enough for most driver’s requirements. The braking performance is admirable, too, and while it does have adjustable regenerative braking including a pretty aggressive top mode that almost allows single-pedal driving, it will not come to a complete stop unless you hit the brakes. It is quiet and refined at pace, though, and while it might not scratch the itch for someone who wants a performance electric model, it has ample power, and certainly has luxury on its side – and that’s the job of this version in the Q8 e-tron range. The Audi Q8 e-tron demonstrates its ability to seamlessly blend electric power with practicality. It offers an impressive range to meet the needs of electric vehicle drivers. The entry-level 50 model, equipped with an 95kWh battery, provides a range of up to 450 kilometres, ensuring ample driving distances between charges. For those seeking even greater range, the 55 model boasts a larger 114kWh battery, capable of delivering up to 526 kilometres. Audi has made significant improvements to the Q8 e-tron’s charging capabilities. With a maximum charge rate of

30

www.motorsireland.ie

170kW, the vehicle can charge quickly and efficiently. While this figure may be lower than that of some competitors, Audi’s engineers have strategically opted for a sustainable charging rate that the car can maintain for extended periods. Under optimal conditions, the smaller 50 model can charge from 10% to 80% in as little as 28 minutes, while the larger battery of the 55 model requires approximately 31 minutes for the same charging interval. The Audi Q8 e-tron is available in various models. The Advance 50 quattro starts at €86,400, offering a range of 450km and a power output of 250 kW. The Sport and S Line 50 quattro trims are priced at €90,005 and €95,895, respectively, with similar performance specifications. The Advance 55 quattro is priced at €96,900, offering a range of over 520km and a power output of 300 kW. The Sport and S Line 55 quattro trims are priced at €100,505 and €106,395, respectively, with similar performance specifications. Conclusion Audi has improved the electric SUV’s range, charging capabilities, acceleration, ride, handling, and overall value compared with previous e-tron models. The results are impressive enough to make the Q8 e-tron worth a strong consideration when compared with the growing list of electric luxury SUVs.

TOYOTA PRIUS

irst launched in 1997, the world’s most popular hybrid electric vehicle, the Prius, quickly became renowned as a sustainability game-changer, and to date has sold more than 5 million units. From a design perspective the new PHEV is a world away from the original Prius hybrid. With a sleek hammerhead design and great design features this new Prius is transformative. With modern detailing down to an elegantly sloped rear, this new-look fifth-generation Prius stuns from any angle. The new Prius will be sold in a single plug-in hybrid guise on the Irish market and we had heard great things before we took delivery of our test vehicle over the Christmas period. Our test car came in Tokyo Gold which really set it off and is a real eye catcher. The new Prius is 2 inches lower and 1 inch wider than its predecessor for a low, dynamic look. The look is completed with 19-inch wheels that give it an aggressive stance. Nearly invisible rear doors with handles concealed in the “C” pillar, and thin and horizontally aligned LED lighting arrays front and rear add to its modern look. As mentioned, only one version of the Toyota Prius PHEV will be available to buy in Ireland, and it comes with a good level of standard equipment. The Prius gets dual-zone climate control, smart entry, an electric opening rear hatch, 19-inch wheels, synthetic leather upholstery, a powered driver’s seat and a 12.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Toyota Safety Sense 3 package groups together numerous assistance features. These include Pre-Collision System with Intersection Collision Avoidance Support, Pre-Collision System with daytime cyclist and motorcycle detection, Emergency Steering Assist and Driving Stop, Proactive Driving Assist and Front-to-front Oncoming Car and Motorcycle detection. Toyota includes a three-year/100,000-kilometre manufacturer’s warranty and a five-year/100,000-kilometre warranty on all hybrid components, including the battery. If you keep the car serviced within the Toyota dealer network, that hybrid warranty extends up to 15 years with unlimited mileage. Commenting on the Prius Plug-in Hybrid, Zoë Bradley, Head of Marketing Communications and Corporate Affairs in Toyota Ireland said: “The Toyota Prius has been one of the most iconic vehicles in our brand’s history. We are so excited to announce that a new fifth-generation Prius will be arriving to Irish shores in July of this year (July 2023) exclusively as a Plug-in Hybrid. “The Prius was first introduced in 1997 and continues to chart the course in our journey to zero emissions. The new Prius Plug-in Hybrid comes with a stunning design we know our Irish customers will love, along with an impressive 12.3” Toyota Smart Connect multimedia system, 19” alloys, a new 13.6 kWh lithium-ion battery and heated and ventilated driver and passenger seats. We expect the Prius Plug-in Hybrid to be very popular and encourage customers to get in touch with their dealer today to find out more about this next generation model.” This new Prius is much better than it’s predecessor. The electric motor runs just a bit longer while accelerating from a stop and when the engine does engage, it’s a much smo-

TOYOTA PRIUS other transition and blending of power. There is generally less noise and vibration, which is also thanks to the more powerful powertrain that doesn’t have to work so hard. The old car’s imprecise steering is gone, and there’s even a Sport mode for those who want just a little more engagement when behind the wheel. Body motions are also now better controlled and the ride quality is still good, even with 19-inch wheels. Moving beyond comparisons to the old car, the new Prius is a surprisingly lively drive. I took it up some tight windy mountain roads on the Kildare/Dublin border and it held its own, flicking back and forth between corners with impressive poise from the chassis. The steering is slightly disconnected in terms of feedback, but the effort is consistent and appropriately weighted. Altogether, the new Prius is more enjoyable to drive than many plug in

hybrids. You get more of an electric car experience in the new Toyota Prius PHEV than any previous version, with a 13.6kWh battery providing sufficient energy for up to 71 kilometres of driving without activating the 2.0-litre petrol engine. Recharging that battery is limited to 3.3kW, meaning it will still take around four hours to charge using a domestic wallbox or public charge point.

Conclusion

The new Toyota Prius is a sleek hybrid with fantastic fuel economy that practically guarantees plentiful savings at your local petrol station. On the road it has decent power and responsive handling along with 71 kilometres of driving in full EV mode. The infotainment system is intuitive and packed with features. Only down side I noticed was boot space which was 284 litres.

CITROËN Ë-C4 X

W

e recently got our hands on the new Citroën ë-C4 X. The ë-C4 X Electric model features a unique design combining the elegance of a fastback silhouette with the modern attitude of an SUV and the timeless cachet of a spacious 4-door. With a notable and innovative design, the ë-C4 X Electric redefines the sedan by introducing the modern and popular crossover element. Available with several safety and technology features as standard, the new ë-C4 X also features Citroën’s Advanced Comfort Programme. In a first for Citroën, this model will launch exclusively in an all-electric powertrain in Ireland with petrol and diesel models having arrived in late 2023. Models are now available to test drive for the 241-registration period. Enforcing Citroën’s commitment to sustainability, Citroën ë-C4 and new ë-C4 X contain 135kg of recycled materials and are manufactured using 30% solar in Madrid, Spain. On the outside, the design includes a familiar frontend incorporating Citroën’s assertive rounded design signature. The high, horizontal bonnet features concave indentations, and trademark chrome chevrons stretch across the width of the body, connecting with double-height front lamps using LED headlights to reinforce the vehicle’s high-tech credentials and provide maximum visibility. Large 690mm diameter wheels combined with a short front overhang give the car a raised ride height which results in a more elevated driving position. When viewed in profile, the car’s dynamic roofline flows effortlessly and seamlessly from the top of the windscreen into the top panel of the boot lid to create a fastback silhouette. With a drag coefficient of just Cd 0.29, aerodynamic efficiency has been optimised thanks to the crisp roofline, which directly benefits range efficiency. At a length of 4600 mm, the new ë-C4 X also holds a wheelbase at a length of 2670 mm. The rear overhang intelligently disguises the length required to package the capacious 510-litre boot. Distinctive new LED tail lamps are placed either side of the boot opening and carry through the sculpted lines of the boot lid, pushing around the corners and along the sides of the car. Inside the new Citroën ë-C4 X, drivers and their passengers will enjoy an unmatched feeling of serenity, comfort, and space thanks to Citroën’s Advanced Comfort experience. This is particularly noticeable to back seat passengers thanks to its outstanding 198mm of second row knee room and a more reclined rear seatback, while its width means three people can comfor-

tably sit side-by-side across the rear bench. The length of the vehicle attributes to the impressive extra-large boot compartment providing 510-litres of usable space and a generous opening of 875 mm at 200 mm above the loading sill. The new ë-C4 X inherits the distinct offering of Citroën’s Advanced Comfort programme, featuring the brands exclusive Advanced Comfort Seats with special foam thickened by 15mm plus a unique blend of visual, postural, and dynamic support. High-density foam at the core of the seats ensures optimal comfort particularly on longer journeys and maintains this over time by reducing any settling effects and ageing within the seats. Alongside the Advanced Comfort Seats, ë-C4 X includes Citroën’s innovative and exclusive Progressive Hydraulic Cushions suspension system. The presence of hydraulic stops allows Citroën engineers greater freedom to tune the suspension setup to achieve the brand’s acclaimed “magic carpet ride” effect, which gives the impression that the car is gliding over uneven ground, this results in the ultimate comfort when driving.

38

www.motorsireland.ie

The ë-C4 X will launch initially in an all-electric powertrain in Ireland, cementing Citroën’s commitment to zero Co2 emissions. Thanks to its smooth, aerodynamic shape and its 50 kWh battery, the efficient zero emission electric powertrain in new ë-C4 X offers an impressive WLTP range of up to 360 km. The 100 kW electric motor offers 136 hp with 260 Nm of torque that is instantly available to the driver, this allows a 0-100 km/h of 9.5 seconds when in sport mode and a top speed of 150 km/h. Three driving modes are available – Eco, Normal or Sport - and are activated by the mode selector in the centre console based on the driver’s preference. At a public charging station, using a rapid 100 kW DC charger, the battery replenishes at a best-in-segment rate of around 10 km/min, with 80% of charge completed in 30 minutes. Using a 7.4 kW wall box, charging takes 7.5 hours with single-phase supply or as little as 5 hours with a three-phase electricity supply. Managing vehicle charging is easy and can be pre-programmed to take advantage of off-peak electricity prices. Charging times can be pre-set using the car’s touchscreen My Citroën Drive Plus interface or the My Citroën app.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION Model Citroën Ë-C4 X Flair Pack

To cater to customers who have a broad range of usages and need affordable prices to keep their freedom of mobility, Citroën launched new C4 X in Petrol and Diesel powertrains in Ireland in late 2023. Citroën is the only brand to offer two compelling electric vehicles in the C-segment with the award-winning ë-C4 and all-new ë-C4 X while continuing to expand their range to match customers’ expectations with alternative powertrains. Models are expected to arrive with Puretech 100 6-speed manual and Puretech 130 8-speed automatic petrol engines with a BlueHDi 130 8-speed automatic also available. This model not only expands Citroën’s electric offering, though it provides further choice to customers seeking larger boot space, extensive comfort, and an electric range suitable to all needs. Better yet, we will see petrol and diesel models arrive later this year (2023), allowing further benefits to private and fleet customers.”

I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the ë-C4 X. The low-effort, comfort-centred dynamic character that Citroën aims for with its cars has been given another outing with the ë-C4 X and executed fairly competently. The soft ride has a calm and unruffled quality to it while there is little or no noise from the e-motor or transmission worth talking about even under hard acceleration. What really helps are Citroen’s famed hydraulic ‘bump stops’; these ensure the car does a much better job of mopping up imperfections, a price worth paying for some additional body roll through the bends. This is a likeable car and one that leaves you feeling fresh after a two or three-hour commute.

Conclusion

Overall, the Citroen ë-C4 X is a fantastic car worth considering if you’re looking for a new electric vehicle for the family. If you’re looking for a car that combines cutting-edge technology with exceptional design and comfort, the Citroen ë-C4 X is worth checking out.

In terms of specification, there are four grades available on ë-C4 X; Feel, Feel Pack, Flair and Flair Pack. In addition to Progressive Hydraulic Cushion Suspension, the entry level Feel grade comes with an impressive level of specification as standard including 18” alloys, automatic LED headlights and fog lights with cornering function, rear parking sensors with reversing camera, a 10-inch touchscreen, keyless entry and start and automatic dual-zone air conditioning. The Feel Pack adds Advanced Comfort Seats, driver’s head-up display, Citroën Smart Pad support and My Citroën Drive Plus. Flair gains a fine-grained heated leather steering wheel, front and rear parking sensors with top rear vision, heated leather steering wheel, while the range topping Flair Pack adds the Alcantara interior and heated front seats. Standard equipment includes a mode 3 charging cable for on street charging. The ë-C4 X costs about €1000 more per trim level than the E-C4 hatchback. The range starts from €41,455 for the Feel, from €42,550 for the Feel Pack, from €43,507 for the Flair, and from €45,160 for the Flair Pack. Our Flair Pack test vehicle had €2,050 optional extras, Including optional equipment of a panoramic sunroof, leather interior and Silver Grey colour pack. 39

BMW M2

BMW M2

The M2 is special. It packs a powerful sixcylinder engine, BMW’s best in-car tech, and some of the most advanced suspension bits from the M3 and the M4.

40

“The two-door machine embodies an unadulterated racing passion.”

41

T

BMW M2

he new BMW M2 encapsulates the pure joy of driving: its compact dimensions, a six-cylinder in-line engine, a manual gearbox option, rear-wheel drive and an advanced control/operating concept – allowing the driver to adjust the vehicle setup as desired – are all central to its appeal. Surefooted agility on demand and handling that remains easily controllable even as the driver explores the coupé’s limits are at its core. The distinct character profile of the new BMW M2 is reflected in a powerful aggressive design. With a maximum output of 460hp – 90hp more than the original BMW M2 – and exhilarating driving dynamics that have been honed during in-depth testing on the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife circuit and other race tracks, the new BMW M2 represented another highlight in the model offensive celebrating the 50-year anniversary of BMW M GmbH.

The two-door machine embodies an unadulterated racing passion that owners can enjoy day in, day out, along with a comprehensive specification ensuring it is as comfortable tackling the city as it is the most demanding race circuits. The advances over the first-generation BMW M2, which became the largest-selling model in the BMW M line-up with almost 60,000 examples sold worldwide, are evident not just from the car’s sharper performance but also its far more extensive standard specification. A focused selection of options is available for enhancing driving comfort or adding even more visual excitement to both the exterior and interior. A standout optional extra is the bespoke M Race Track Package that is designed to maximise the performance experience, its benefits including raising the electronically limited top speed of 250km/h to 285km/h. Developing a maximum 460hp from its advanced engine, the new BMW M2 outguns the base unit used by the original BMW M2 by 90hp as mentioned. Indeed, its output is even 10hp higher than that of the special-edition BMW M2 CS from the previous model generation. The 3.0-litre unit differs only in a small number of details from the engine employed in the BMW M3/BMW M4 models.

in urban areas, and during high-speed track outings. The oil supply system is also designed to handle all driving situations. An oil sump with two separate chambers and an additional suction stage allows the map-controlled oil pump to keep lubricant flowing reliably even under extreme lateral and longitudinal acceleration. The M-specific exhaust system with electrically controlled flaps generates an emotionally rich soundtrack. It terminates in a large silencer, from which the exhaust gases escape via a quartet of tailpipes in customary BMW M fashion.

The straight-six engine combines the latest M TwinPower Turbo technology with the high-revving characteristics of an M car. Peak torque of 550Nm is produced between 2,650 and 5,870rpm and maximum output arrives at 6,250rpm. The engine revs to a maximum 7,200rpm.

With all this fantastic engine technology it goes without saying good that the M2 packs a punch. Even something as mundane as accelerating from a stoplight feels exciting in the M2. This car moves its way from 0 to 100 km/h, in about 4 seconds.

Two mono-scroll turbochargers supply compressed air to the combustion chambers. The turbocharging system also features an indirect intercooler and an electronically controlled wastegate. Other elements of M TwinPower Turbo technology are High Precision Injection, which works with maximum pressure of 350 bar, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-VANOS fully variable camshaft timing.

The M2 adopts the M4’s modular CLAR architecture. The M2 has unique suspension tuning, such as the M3 Touring’s squishier springs in the rear, a tweaked traction control system, and an updated electronic limited-slip differential. All of that equipment makes this car feel more eager than its big sibling.

The M-specific cooling system ensures the powertrain components maintain an optimal operating temperature at all times – both in everyday use over short distances or 42

www.motorsireland.ie

One of the biggest changes is in the steering. The new M2 gains some heft and a quicker ratio while maintaining the typical M-car quickness on turn-in. More good news is that the M2 is rear-wheel-drive and the grip is excellent.

With a car as quick as the M2 you need stopping power. The new brake-by-wire system helps brings the M2 down to speed more fluidly. Six-piston calipers are at the front, while single-piston calipers and discs at the rear come standard. And depending on the drive mode, the braking pressure is adjustable in two ways; Sport mode makes them grabbier while Comfort mode keeps them softer. Conclusion If you like the M4, then you’ll love the new M2. It’s basically a smaller and more agile version of that vehicle with a lot of the same features. The M2’s six-cylinder engine is hugely powerful and the fancy suspension tech means this coupe can move through corners with the best of BMW M models. 43

here’s no denying that the Ranger Raptor looks like something you’d expect your younger self to dream up, but that’s part of its brilliance. When finished in the bright orange colour like my test vehicle, it looks fun in a way that any car-loving adult who was once a car-loving kid can surely appreciate. With chunky all-terrain tyres fitted to a set of 17-inch wheels, meaty grey arch flares, and a boxy new front bumper with bold ‘FORD’ lettering that brings it in-line with America’s larger F-150 Raptor, it might be childish but it’s undoubtedly a winner The interior has been given a thorough revamp relative to the standard Ranger, with orange highlights scattered throughout, a steering wheel that screams performance with Raptor engraved at the six position, and a set of supportive seats complete with more Raptor branding. Being positioned at the top of the Ford Ranger lineup, the Raptor comes complete with all the available bells and whistles including a 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster with an array of configurable performance dials, a 12.0-inch portrait-oriented infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, ambient interior lighting, and wireless phone charging. For a pick-up, the Raptor has quite a roomy cabin. The back feels generous for headroom and legroom. There are also vents, USBs and an armrest for back seat passengers. The Raptor is more like driving a luxury vehicle on a daily basis rather than a rugged off-roader that could tackle any surface you can think of.

The second-generation Ranger Raptor raises the off-road performance bar. Developed by Ford Performance, the all-new Ranger Raptor is the ultimate performance derivative of the latest Ford Ranger. With smarter technology controlling tougher, next‑generation hardware, Ranger Raptor blends raw power with mechanical and technical precision to create the most advanced Ranger ever. “We’ve really focused on delivering a genuine performance truck with the all-new Ranger Raptor,” said Dave Burn, Ford Performance chief programme engineer for Ranger Raptor. “It’s significantly faster, looks incredible, is packed with new features, and it’s the toughest Ranger we’ve ever made.” Developed by Ford Performance, the new Ranger Raptor is powered by a Bi-turbo version of Ford’s 2.0‑litre EcoBlue diesel engine that delivers 205hp and 500Nm of torque. It comes equipped with Ford’s new 10-speed automatic gearbox and can reach 100 km/h in 10 seconds. But for more performance, there’s a 3.0-litre twin turbo V6 (292hp/491Nm), with 0-100 in 7.9 seconds. The twin-turbo 3.0-litre EcoBo-

45

FORD RANGER RAPTOR ost V6 engine boasts a compacted graphite-iron cylinder block, which is around 75 per cent stronger and up to 75 per cent stiffer than the iron used in traditional castings. Ford Performance ensured the engine delivers immediate response to throttle inputs, and a race-bred anti-lag system similar to that first seen on the Ford GT road car and Focus ST enables rapid delivery of boost on demand. This new generation of Ranger was designed with Raptor in mind and so it’s part of the line-up from the get go. And many of the improvements made to the base model were implemented to help make the Raptor even better. So from an improved base model comes an even more capable off-road machine. For the first time, Ranger Raptor gets an advanced full-time four-wheel drive system with an all‑new electronically‑controlled on-demand two-speed transfer case. The Raptor also now offers both front and rear locking differentials, with the new front differential providing a valuable additional feature for hardcore off-road enthusiasts. While it’s engineered to drive through the desert and rough terrain, the majority of Ranger Raptors on Irish roads won’t see any off-road activity, but the good news is that it’s terrific on regular roads too. This new powertrain is a better fit for Raptor. The diesel never really challenged the chassis, whereas now the drive is much more invigorating. You arrive at the corners that bit quicker, and so you can push your entry speed if you’re not paying attention. Push too hard on the exit and you’ll be forcing the issue with the front tyres. The steering feel is solid and you know how

46

www.motorsireland.ie

hard you can push. The steering isn’t particularly quick, but it does start turning the moment you ask it too. It has three settings from Comfort to Sport via a button on the wheel. The 10-speed Automatic moves through the gears with ease. Its behaviour in Sport mode is smart, holding gears when you lift and dropping a couple when you hit the brakes. Press the accelerator and it will push the V6 towards its 6500rpm red line. It smartly moves through the gears early to maximise that midrange. The brakes are good too with its progressive action. Tap the brakes lightly and you can brush off a bit of speed before a bend, while pressing harder initiates more bite. The valved exhaust system has a quiet mode, right through to an ‘off road use only’ setting that really maximises the engine note. It’s available in double cab format with a 2,500 kg max towing capacity and 620 kg max gross payload. Equipment includes front and rear ventilated disc brakes, terrain management system, 17” x 8.5” alloy wheels, unique Raptor leather and suede trim, 8-way powered driver and passenger seats, dual zone automatic air con and SYNC 3 with navigation centre.

Conclusion

It’s great to drive both on and off-road, goes hard and sounds impressive. Yet it’s civilised enough for the school run. Very capable and still practical.

DS7

he facelifted DS 7 has arrived in Ireland with updated styling and a upgraded interior. So what are the changes. Well, it wears a rather smart-looking new face, including slimmer LED headlamps and those five vertical light bars on the front corners. A light veil, DS calls it. The back end has also received the same treatment, with slimmer LED rear lights and a redesigned boot lid, plus DS lettering in place of the Crossback signature. New alloy wheels complete the look. Overall it’s a more solid and premium look.

The cabin has likewise been modernised with a heap of new upholstery options, finishes and patterns. The infotainment system is one of the biggest changes for New DS 7 on the inside with the inclusion of DS Iris System. This solution introduces a totally reworked interface, that’s completely configurable, reactive and seamless and supported by natural voice recognition. The redesigned 12” high-resolution touch screen features a menu made up of widgets for accessing all its functions with a single movement: for controlling the connected navigation, the ventilation, the digital audio sources and journey information. This big screen that’s very comfortable to use also enables views front and rear to be displayed, provided by new high-resolution digital cameras, and access to the Mirror Screen function over wi-fi. A new large 12-inch digital instrument panel with displays that can be changed and personalised features refreshed graphics with all the vital information such as energy flow on plug-in hybrid versions. Buyers can choose from a 1.5-litre diesel with 130hp or a more powerful plug-in hybrid with 225hp in front wheel drive models and even more powerful four wheel drive variants (300hp and 360hp). All come with an 8-speed automatic. The diesel offers excellent economy, particularly for high mileage motorway users. Our test car was the front-wheel drive 225hp plug-in hybrid E-Tense model, which mixes a 1.6-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder engine with a rechargeable battery that is supposed to get you as much as 69km of electric motoring on one charge. It will take about seven hours to charge the DS 7 plug-in hybrid from a three-pin plug and just under two hours from a 7kW wallbox. Pricing for the new DS 7 range starts from €50,390 for the diesel and from €57,800 for the plug-in hybrid. The DS 7 E-Tense plug-in hybrid in Rivoli trim that we tested retails from €61,800. The above diesel model forms the base of the DS 7 line-up, priced from €50,390 in Performance Line trim. That comes as standard with a 12.3-inch instrument screen, a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen, keyless entry and start, two-zone air conditioning, ambient cabin lighting, front and rear parking sensors, a parking camera, cruise control and speed limiter, and an ‘Advanced Safety Pack’ featuring emergency autonomous braking, blind-spot detection, lane keeping assistance and traffic sign recognition. Performance Line models also come with 19-inch alloy wheels, and you can upgrade to the 225hp front-drive PHEV model for €57,800. Rivoli models start at €55,395 for the diesel, €61,800 for the front-drive 225hp PHEV, and €65,800 for the four-wheel-drive 300hp PHEV. Standard Rivoli equipment includes ‘Basalt’ leather interior trim, a heated windscreen, a full-leather ste48

DS7 ering wheel, an electric tailgate, a cabin clock made by high-end watchmaker BRM, wireless phone charging and electrically adjustable front seats. At the peak of the range is Opera trim, which is only available on the top-spec 360hp high-performance 4x4 PHEV model. That costs €73,995 and comes with upgraded leather trim in either a dark or light finish, according to your taste, 21-inch alloys, ventilated front seats, active cruise control, acoustic side glass and rear air conditioning. The new DS 7 introduces technology for more comfort and peace of mind such as DS Active Scan Suspension and DS Night Vision. DS Active Scan Suspension is a camera-controlled damping system that’s completely unique in its class. It adjusts each wheel independently according to imperfections in the carriageway. The DS 7 focuses on offering a comfortable drive rather

50

www.motorsireland.ie

than an exciting one but even that is not fully successful as the ride can be a little uncomfortable on certain road surfaces. Thankfully the DS 7 comes with a number of driving modes and the default mode is ‘Normal’. But if you want the Active Scan Suspension fitted on the plug-in hybrid models to actually do its thing, you’ll have to push the diamond-shaped drive mode selector switch and change to ‘Comfort’. Once this is done the DS 7 became far more comfortable. The camera does a good job of scanning the road and tweaking the damping. On the motorway the DS 7 travels at ease and cabin is quiet and relaxed. The seats are very comfortable for those longer journeys, giving you an elevated driving position and keeping your legs and lower back well supported.

Conclusion

DS has added further appeal to a vehicle that was already impressive. If you want to step away from the usual premium brands then the DS7 could be worth a look.

FERRARI SF90 XX STRADALE

T

o be built in just 799 examples, the new V8-powered PHEV represents the latest and most extreme example of a concept of special version, which pushes the performance of Ferrari’s road-going models to new levels.

The concept has been honed over the past 20 years or so, with many of these models quickly becoming considered benchmarks in the Prancing Horse’s line up, such as the 488 Pista and 812 Competizione. Over the same two decades, Ferrari has also developed the XX Programme to offer a select group of expert client drivers extreme cars that are not homologated for the road, but that can be driven at the very limit on the track. All of the models produced by the programme have proved a huge success, with the most recent addition being the FXX-K EVO. Drawing on its experience in both of these spheres, Ferrari decided to create a road-legal car which embodies the maximum expression of the two programmes’ engineering concepts. The SF90 XX Stradale is based on the supercar in the range, the SF90 Stradale, and raises its already impressively exhilarating track and on-the-limit driving experience to new heights. Performance is boosted thanks to its impressive 1,030 cv (30 more than the SF90 Stradale), specific software logics and the use of radical new aerodynamics solutions, including a fixed rear spoiler – the first to appear on a road-going Ferrari since the days of the F50 – which delivers an unparalleled 530 kg of downforce at 250 km/h. The same concept provided the inspiration for the SF90 XX Spider, which combines the ultimate on-track adrenaline rush with the heady pleasure of en plein air driving, where the iconic sound of the Ferrari V8 gives such a vital contribution. The SF90 XX Spider benefits from the same sophisticated aero solutions as the SF90 XX Stradale, as well as specifically developed cockpit air flows that guarantee superb occupant comfort with the top down. It is equipped with Ferrari’s acclaimed Retractable Hard Top (RHT), which comprises aluminium panels and not only deploys and retracts in a mere 14 seconds, but can also be activated at speeds of up to 45 km/h.

Powertrain

The SF90 XX Stradale has also inherited the signature PHEV layout found in the SF90 Stradale and SF90 Spider, in which the V8 internal combustion engine is integrated with three electric motors, two independent on the front axle, and one

“Like the SF90 Stradale, the SF90 XX Stradale has three electric motors.”

FERRARI SF90 XX STRADALE Based on the SF90 Stradale, the new special limited series SF90 XX Stradale has been unveiled.

53

FERRARI SF90 XX STRADALE located between the engine and gearbox at the rear. This configuration allows the car to unleash a maximum of 1030 cv (+30 cv more than the SF90 Stradale), setting a whole new performance benchmark.

Internal Combustion Engine

Thanks to its 797 cv, the mid-rear-mounted V8 turbo raises the performance limit bar still further for this particular architecture. The SF90 Stradale’s power unit was used as the starting point for the F154FB engine which powers the SF90 XX Stradale, and is now significantly more extreme. Efficiency was increased by polishing the inlet and exhaust ducts and the compression ratio was increased with the adoption of new pistons and specific machining of the combustion chamber. The removal of the secondary air system also slashed 3.5 kg off the engine’s weight compared to the previous application.

Engine Sound

The SF90 XX Stradale’s soundtrack was redesigned to become the ultimate encapsulation of the car’s racing soul. To produce an even fuller, richer sound and celebrate the harmonics right across the V8’s rev range, the hot tube system was optimised. This transmits the combustion pulsations into the cabin, highlighting the higher frequencies to reveal the ultimate evolution of the Ferrari V8.

Electric Motors

Like the SF90 Stradale, the SF90 XX Stradale has three electric motors, one located between the ICE and the gearbox and two on the front axle. In this instance, they deliver a maximum of 233 cv or 171 kW, thanks to the patented extra boost vehicle dynamics logic, an absolute first on a Prancing Horse road car. The SF90 XX Stradale’s high performance lithium-ion battery powers the three motors, guaranteeing a 25km range in full-electric mode. When the ICE is off, the front motors give the car a maximum speed of 135 km/h. The control logic optimally manages the power flows focussing on either efficiency or performance as required. The driver can use the eManettino selector on the steering wheel to choose from four different power mana-

54

www.motorsireland.ie

gement modes. In eDrive mode, the internal combustion engine is turned off and traction is entrusted entirely to the front axle; in Hybrid mode, it favours battery energy depletion and manages transitions autonomously, maximising the full-electric range; in Performance mode, the internal combustion engine is kept running as the priority is on maintaining consistent performance, rather than on achieving the peak power; and in Qualifying, the system unleashes its maximum power output, thanks to a control logic that prioritises performance, using the brand-new extra boost function.

Gearbox

The SF90 XX Stradale and the SF90 XX Spider retain the 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox that made its first appearance in the Ferrari range on the SF90 Stradale. However, the gear-shift logic has changed significantly: the car uses the patented logic introduced on the Ferrari Daytona SP3 to reach more engaging dynamic acceleration profiles. Furthermore, the new logic improves the gear-shift sound by introducing an exhaust note similar to the overrun on lift-off noise typical of high-performance driving at medium/high revs. To that end, the Ferrari engineers developed a specific engine calibration that works in synergy with the gearbox control logic: the SF90 Stradale’s actuation sequence was redesigned and the combustion chamber pressure cycle was optimised to maximise the intensity of the gear-shift sound, at exactly the point of lift-off to allow the gearbox to engage.

Aerodynamics

The SF90 XX Stradale delivers the most efficient aerodynamic performance of any road-going car in Ferrari’s history, making it comparable only to that of the LaFerrari supercar. It delivers double the maximum downforce of the SF90 Stradale, improving grip and yielding a palpably faster lap time at Fiorano. The product of Maranello’s inestimable racing experience, this result was reached by redesigning the cooling flow management for the thermal and electric components as well the engine compartment to cope with the higher maximum power available.

From an aerodynamics perspective, the signature element is most definitely the rear fixed wing which was developed from experience with the XX Programme cars. This is an element with enormous aero potential that proved a natural fit for this particular application, thanks to close collaboration with the Ferrari Styling Centre. Its shape was dictated by the need to efficiently hone the way in which the pressure field created by the wing interacts with the complex pressure and backpressure systems that develop around the shut-off Gurney.

Vehicle Dynamics

The focus with the SF90 XX Stradale’s development was to produce the most high-performance Ferrari road car ever that also delivered maximum fun behind the wheel, whilst fully retaining all of the functionalities of the SF90 Stradale’s hybrid powertrain. Usability of performance was especially important, particularly in terms of the electric mode’s ability to deliver surprisingly high performance driving both in typically urban settings and in out-of-town trips – in fact, the top speed in eDrive mode is 135 km/h.

The transition from electric mode to hybrid mode is extremely smooth thanks to the seamless coordination between the electric front axle, the 8-speed DCT gearbox, the rear-mounted electric motor and the V8 engine. This in turn guarantees progressive, continuous acceleration and makes all the powertrain’s power available as rapidly as possible.

Exterior

The SF90 XX Stradale is the most extreme version of the SF90 Stradale; its design criteria are thus those of a track car, calibrated to ensure it can be homologated for road use. That said, the SF90 XX Stradale is not just a special version: it is the first XX model to go through the factory gates, transferring the very pinnacle of Prancing Horse track technology, aerodynamic efficiency and power, to the road. Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre headed by Flavio Manzoni, the SF90 XX Stradale incorporates the engineering principles that underpinned the SF90 Stradale and 55

FERRARI SF90 XX STRADALE

pushes them to new extremes. Thanks to the close synergic relationship between the Styling Centre and the Technical Department, significant modifications were carried out, predominantly with the aim of increasing the downforce of the original car. There is no doubt that one of the most distinctive characteristics of the SF90 XX Stradale’s design is its rear wing. The tail volume, which has been specifically redesigned with aero in mind, is now sleeker, giving it the long tail silhouette typical of racing cars. The air intakes for the intercoolers are now larger too, channelling the air towards the radiators more efficiently. The arrow-shape front wing concept has been retained on the SF90 XX Stradale. The headlights, which now have an even lower upper profile, are now integrated into this area by two external vertical wing profiles. This creates what we might call a more geometric language that reflects the spirit of this new car. New and distinctive elements of the front section are the two imposing lower wings that dominate the air intakes, which look as if they are floating, making the SF90 XX Stradale itself seem broader and more glued to the asphalt than any other. One of the layers is the fixed rear wing, a solution not seen on a street legal Ferrari since the 1995 F50. The second is the body-coloured profile that wraps around a light-bar, an element that is a complete departure from the twin-taillight concept of the SF90 Stradale. The third layer, already seen on the SF90, is the blown spoiler combined with an active aero concept known as a shut-off Gurney.

Interior

The guiding principle of the SF90 XX Stradale’s interior design was highlighting the cockpit’s racing vocation through solutions that would provide significant weight-savings. The main areas involved were the door panels, tunnel and mats, which are now simpler in terms of their shape and the mainly technical fabrics used, while carbon-fibre was used for functional areas. The upper part of the dashboard is trimmed in Alcantara®, while the lower part is trimmed in technical fabric. Both are inspired by the racing world. The door panels emphasise the theme seen aboard the SF90 Stradale: the concave sections that converge on the 56

www.motorsireland.ie

dashboard are highlighted by the colour contrast. The three louvres in the middle zone, on the other hand are a nod to the air vents on the wheel arch, creating an overall dynamic, sculptural effect. The three apertures, which reference the exterior language, also seamlessly integrate technical and control functions, in a completely new stylistic interpretation. The pared-back central tunnel not only looks, but is exceptionally light. It is dominated by the gear shift gate which is located now centrally and more forward on the tunnel compared to the SF90 Stradale. The window lifters and the key compartment are on a secondary level. The styling theme is characterised by volumes that create a sophisticated combination of functional voids and structural solids, lending the tunnel a sporty yet sophisticated appeal while still highlighting its functionality.

SF90 XX Spider

The SF90 XX Spider allowed the Ferrari Styling Centre to use the modifications made to the rear of the car to create an instantly recognisable architecture in which the flying buttress, a much-loved part of Ferrari tradition, seamlessly melds with the arrow theme of the front. The resulting visual effect extends the body forwards and lending it a completely different connotation to the SF90 XX Stradale. The car’s centre of gravity thus appears to be lower too, particularly from the side. This is not just because of the roof, which has a wraparound windscreen that seamlessly melds with the side windows, but also because the flying buttresses are lower than on the SF90 XX Stradale. Although the roll-bars protrude from the rest of the bodywork when the roof is lowered, the fact that they are carbon-fibre means they don’t sully the broad, squat look created by the flying buttresses. This in turn enhances the visual lowering of the car’s volume. When the roof is up, the roll-bars seamlessly connect to and become one with the roof structure. Like the roll-bars, the top is carbon-fibre and thanks to the renowned Ferrari Retractable Hard Top (RHT) mechanism, can be opened while the car is moving in a mere 14 seconds at a speed of up to 45 km/h, allowing occupants to enjoy the car to the utmost in all kinds of weather.
