elcome to the new issue of Motors Ireland. For our cover car this issue we chose the one-off Lamborghini Countach. The Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4 is a futuristic limited edition paying homage to the Countach’s iconic status as a revolutionary design and technology rule-breaker and recreated for the 21st century. Its puristic lines are immediately recognisable from the Countach legacy: the patriarch of modern super sports cars and Lamborghini design. With its aspirated V12 engine combined with Lamborghini’s hybrid supercapacitor technology, the Countach LPI 800-4 retains the inimitable V12 experience and sound from its Longitudinale Posteriore (LP) mounted powerplant combined with the hybrid (I) technology developed for the Sián. Delivering 814 hp as maximum combined power (rounded at 800 in the name) from its aspirated powerplant (780 hp) and electric motor (34 hp) to its permanent four-wheel drive transmission, the LPI 800-4 produces peak Lamborghini performance of 0-100 km/h acceleration in just 2.8 seconds, a 0-200 km/h in 8.6 seconds and a top speed of 355 km/h. In this issue we have plenty of Irish car reviews. We drive the first-ever electric-only model from the Swedish car maker Volvo. It will not be produced with an internal-combustion engine, not even as a plug-in hybrid. The C40 Recharge uses exactly the same motors, battery pack, body structure and chassis hardware as the XC40 Recharge. These are tucked away out of sight, but the pair also share components like instrument panel, steering wheel and more. The C40 Recharge can be differentiated from the XC40 by its frameless grille, sloping rear and low roofline. The classic Thor’s Hammer lights give the baby Volvo its instant on street family identity. Large 20 inch alloy wheels fill out the arches and complete the look and we loved it in the Fjord blue colour. You can read the full review inside.

ithin the last few months, Dacia has renewed its line-up with two new additions: the all-electric Spring, and Jogger, the versatile C-segment family car.
The roll-out of the new visual branding marks the culmination of the brand’s renewal. Dacia has changed everything but is still true to the essence of the brand. That essence means making vehicles without the bells and whistles, just the bare dnecessities to respond to customers’ expectations. Dacia vehicles are first and foremost robust and reliable, they are truly versatile and can be used for a wide range of purposes, be it running about town or escaping into the great outdoors for a weekend. The brand-new colour, Dusty Grey, is a similar shade to that of natural moss, underscoring Dacia’s close ties to nature. Dacia strives to shake things up, to rethink automotive, notably achieving this through an effort to champion smart consumer practices. This will be reflected in the gradual abandonment of certain materials such as chrome, but also, as has been the case for several years, all leather of animal origin. Dacia will gradually implement one of the commitments made by Renault Group at its Annual General Meeting on 23rd April 2021. As such, from 2023, Dacia will be the Group’s first brand to have limited all its vehicles to a top speed of 180 km/h.
nious drive. The JUKE Hybrid powertrain consists of a new generation, state-of-the-art combustion engine specifically developed for working in a hybrid powertrain application. It produces 69 kW (94hp) and 148Nm of torque. The main electric motor produces 36kW (49hp) and 205Nm of torque. The net result is a powertrain providing 25% more power than the current petrol engine option, with a fuel consumption reduction up to 40% in urban cycle, and up to 20% over the combined cycle. (Figures subject to homologation). Pricing for the new Nissan JUKE Hybrid will be announced later this Summer.
Lionel Jaillet, Dacia Product Performance Director said: “Rolling out the new visual identity across the entire Dacia range is a great exercise in coordination. Thanks to input from all business lines, Dacia now has a brand now skin but still the same DNA. This change is an opportunity to show that our way of doing automotives can still be as essential as it is appealing.” David Durand, Dacia Design Director said: “The streamlined logo is highly symbolic of the brand’s focus on getting back to basics. Similarly, the Dacia Link emblem evokes simplicty and robustness. It also carries the symbolism of the link, a strong element of the Dacia community.”

The Countach LPI 800-4 pays homage to this Lamborghini legacy but it is not retrospective: it imagines how the iconic Countach of the 70s and 80s might have evolved into an elite super sports model of this decade. It upholds the Lamborghini tradition of looking forward, of exploring new design and technology avenues while celebrating the DNA of our brand. It is a Lamborghini that innately expresses the marque’s enduring and emotive power: always inspirational and thrilling to see, hear and most of all drive.”

The Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4 is instantly recognisable as the elevated descendant of Countach generations: testament to the lasting impact of the original Countach design that became the poster car of the 1980s and a symbol of automotive and lifestyle ultra-cool. The Countach moniker – a fitting expression of surprise and wonder in Piedmontese dialect and pronounced

Access for driver and passenger is of course via the infamous scissor doors, first introduced on the Countach and that have become a Lamborghini V12 signature.
“The monocoque chassis and all the body panels are in carbon fibre.”
‘Coon-tach’ – is one of very few Lamborghini model names not connected to bulls. “The first Countach has been present in our Centro Stile as a model for some years now”, explains Mitja Borkert, Head of Centro Stile. „Whenever I look at it, it gives me goose bumps and it serves as the perfect reminder for me and the entire design team to design every future Lamborghini in a visionary and futuristic way. This is an unnegotiable part of our DNA, the essence if you so will. The first Countach shaped the Lamborghini design DNA like no other car; the new Countach translates that unconventional and edgy character into the future.” The Countach’s distinctive silhouette with the essential line running from front to rear, sharp angles and lines and idiosyncratic wedge shape, innovated modern super sports design as well as future Lamborghini models. The Countach LPI 800-4 develops the characteristic lines of the Countach’s five models over nearly 20 years, concentrated into the purest realisation of iconic automotive design.

Performance engineering for a new era
The V12 engine of the Countach is as legendary as the design. Mounted longways at the rear together with its forward-cabin layout, the original Countach featured side-mounted radiators from Formula One; forward-facing gearbox and tubular spaceframe technology. It was as revolutionary in its approach to sports car engineering as in its astonishing looks, with its engine position chosen for weight distribution and balance and of course, the aspirated twelve cylinders delivering the most emotive top performance. The Countach developed the best available technologies to produce an extraordinary car: this visionary philosophy is reflected in the Countach LPI 800-4, taking the pinnacle of current Lamborghini technologies
The final outline is pure and uncluttered, with references to the first LP 500 and LP 400 production version. Giving the LPI 800-4 a distinctive Countach face, inspiration was taken from the Quattrovalvole edition in the assertive lines of the front bonnet with long, low rectangular grille and headlights, as well as in the wheel arches with their hexagonal theme. The sharp inclination of the greenhouse adopts the straight lines redolent of the original Countach, adjoining the powerful, clean front-to-rear line. There is no fixed rear wing outside the pure lines, and the airscoops are integrated fluidly in the strong shoulders of the car, embellished with the distinctive Countach slatted ‘gills’. The iconic and aerodynamically powerful NACA air intakes cut into the side and doors of the Countach LPI 800-4 while the distinctive Periscopio lines running through the roof to the rear of the car, particularly distinctive if viewed from above, appear to float towards the rear of the car.
and engineering to produce the performance expected from a Countach in 2021. “The engineering team that developed the original Countach advanced Lamborghini’s pioneering technical approach, delivering unexpected innovations and the best performance available in a production car,” says Lamborghini Chief Technology Officer Maurizio Reggiani. “That spirit inherently drives Lamborghini R&D, resulting in the pioneering hybrid technology in the LPI 800- 4, and the emotive driving experience and top-line performance expected from a flagship V12 Lamborghini.” The Lamborghini V12 6.5 litre engine, outputting 780 hp, is combined with a 48 volt e-motor mounted directly on the gearbox providing a further 34 hp for immediate response and increased performance: it is the innovative and unique architecture Lamborghini developed for Sián, that is the only mild-hybrid technology to create a direct connection between electric motor and wheels, preserving the pure V12 behaviour. The e-motor is powered by a

supercapacitor providing three times more power compared to a lithium-ion battery of the same weight. The monocoque chassis and all the body panels are in carbon fibre, provide the optimum lightweight solution as well as exceptional torsional stiffness: the Countach LPI 800-4 has a dry weight of 1595 kg for a dry weight to power ratio of 1,95 kg/cv. Visible exterior carbon fibre features are available in the front splitter, around the front window and wing mirrors, engine bonnet cover air intakes and rocker panel and it is always present in specific interior details. Moveable air vents produced by the state-of-the-art 3D printing technology, and a photocromatic roof - changing from solid to transparent at the push of a button – act as a reminder that this car, despite its historic inspiration, is a future automotive screensaver for the 21st century.
World debut at The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering, USA
The Countach LPI 800-4 was unveiled at The Quail, USA in a dedicated colour Bianco Siderale, containing a hint of pearlescent blue and reminiscent of Ferruccio Lamborghini’s own Countach LP 400 S, complete with red and black leather heritage interior. The interior also takes desi14

gn cues from the original Countach within the context of a modern car. The classic and luxurious leather features geometric stitching on the specially designed comfort seats and dashboard, sporting a square motif referencing the bold style and optimism of 1970s design and technology. The Countach LPI 800-4 20” (front) and 21” (rear) wheels are created in the ‘telephone’ style of the 1980s, fitted with carbon ceramic brake discs, and Pirelli P Zero tyres. Owners of the exclusive limited edition Countach LPI 8004 can choose from a range of heritage exterior paint options, mostly in solid colours, such as the iconic Impact White, Giallo Countach and Verde Medio. Otherwise, the contemporary palette offers modern paintings, mostly metallic colours, such as Viola Pasifae or Blu Uranus. An 8,4” HDMI centre touchscreen unique to the LPI 8004 manages car controls including Connectivity and Apple CarPlay. It also includes a unique button entitled ‘Stile’ (Design): pressed, it explains the Countach design philosophy to its privileged audience. Produced in a run of 112 units, the number denotes the ‘LP 112’ internal project name used during the original Lamborghini Countach’s development. The Countach LPI 800-4 is currently being delivered to owners worldwide, privileged to drive a piece of automotive history reimagined for the future.

MCLAREN ARTURA GT4
T
he new Artura GT4 shares much of its technology with the all-new McLaren Artura road car, which debuts the McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture featuring a carbon fibre monocoque at its core. This motorsport-inspired chassis design and construction is the ideal platform for a race car, as a rigid structure enables a wider setup envelope for the driver as well as providing a strong and extremely safe driving environment. The minimisation of weight is a key element of the Artura road car, and this philosophy continues in the race car – with a compact V6 engine and ancillaries including the exhaust system all weight-optimised, the new GT4 car is more than 100Kg lighter than the outgoing 570S GT4. The Artura road car has a hybrid powertrain with an all-new, compact twin-turbo 120-degree V6 petrol engine, allied to an Axial Flux E-Motor located in the transmission. The V6 engine alone generates more than enough output for the tightly-control-

led GT4 racing requirements, where regulations do not permit hybrid powertrains. The lack of hybrid components delivers a weight-saving of 130kg on an already super-lightweight car, while the space within the carbon monocoque for the hybrid battery of the road car now houses the fuel cell and ancillary drive system, keeping weight central and low down. The Artura GT4 is the second race car to be built from the groundup by McLaren Automotive’s Motorsport division. Based on the revolutionary new McLaren Artura, it represents a significant step up from the outgoing 570S GT4, itself a hugely successful competition car which has achieved many race and championship wins with our customer racing teams. With lighter weight, extremely precise handling characteristics and enhanced durability – as well as the packaging and efficiency advantages and all-round serviceability for mechanics of the new V6 powertrain – the Artura GT4 will set new class standards, as we are already seeing from our extensive test and development programme.” Ian Morgan, Director of Motorsport, McLaren Automotive.

Its lines are sharp, the grille is the same colour as the bodywork to blend in perfectly with the front end, and it proudly boasts the new PEUGEOT emblem with the head of a lion. The inverted cut-out of the rear bumper is unexpected, while giving the profile a strong look. The new PEUGEOT 408 sits solidly on 720mm diameter wheels and the iconic 20-inch rims feature a disruptive geometric design. At the front, the fang-shaped light signature perfectly integrates the 408 into the PEUGEOT family, as do the three-claw LED lights at the rear. With a length of 4.69m, based on a long wheelbase of 2.79m, the new PEUGEOT 408 has a remarkably spacious second row, with 188mm of legroom. The boot is also generously sized, with a volume of 536 litres, which can be increased to 1.611 litres once the rear seats are folded down. The new PEUGEOT 408 is 1.48m high with a slim and sleek silhouette. This improves aerodynamic efficiency. For both its driver and its passengers, the PEUGEOT 408 offers the latest generation of the PEUGEOT i-Cockpit®, instantly recognisable by its compact steering wheel dedicated to driving pleasure and controlled agility. In the cockpit, the emphasis is on quality and connectivity, with the very latest technologies to make the driving and travelling experience more intuitive and rewarding. The range of engines powering the PEUGEOT 408 includes two rechargeable hybrid versions with 180 and 225bhp, and a 130bhp petrol version. All three are paired with an 8-speed EAT8 automatic gearbox. An all-electric version will follow a few months later. Efficiency was a key concern for the designers of the PEUGEOT 408, since the combination of efforts in terms of aerodynamics, weight reduction (from 1396kg) and low-emission engines means that the vehicle can now boast remarkably low average energy consumptions (under homologation), both for the hybrids as well as for the 130bhp petrol version. The new PEUGEOT 408 will arrive on the market in 2023.

TOYOTA YARIS HYBRID
G
iven Toyota’s run of late with some truly impressive models like the Corolla, RAV4 and Supra that are interesting and engaging, it probably shouldn’t have come as much of a surprise that the new Yaris is actually very good. The fourth generation Yaris sits on a new platform. The new Yaris is the first small Toyota to be built on Toyota New Global Architecture. The GA-B platform is central to the car’s improved dynamic performance, giving a lower centre of gravity and much greater body rigidity.
tphone integration including Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. High-quality materials are used throughout the new cabin.
This Yaris also bucks industry trends by being slightly smaller than the car it replaces. It’s 3940mm long, so under the magic four-metre mark, but its wheelbase has been extended by 50mm to 2560mm in a bid to improve cabin packaging. It’s a little wider, too, and lower, giving it a slightly more dramatic look.
The engine has a brilliantly characterful sound when you put the foot down and Toyota’s new generation architecture is nicely at home under a lighter car and feels wonderfully agile and responsive. While it does posses a degree of personality when you start driving it a little harder, it is actually a smooth, quiet and comfortable drive. This is an important quality in a car like the Yaris, yet one that few its size actually have.
In Ireland the Toyota Yaris is available in five trim levels – Aura, Luna, Luna Sport, Platinum and Premier. The 2022 Toyota Yaris range starts off in Ireland with a 1.0-litre petrol with 72 hp, while there is also a 1.5-litre petrol manual and a 1.5-litre hybrid auto. Pricing starts at €19,110 for the Yaris Aura petrol, while the Toyota Yaris Hybrid pricing starts from €23,485 in Luna trim. Equipment levels have improved with the Luna models, the entry level trim in which you get a Hybrid model coming with 15-inch alloys, front fog lights, a reversing camera, a leather steering wheel, auto wipers, keyless entry and ignition, climate control and an electronic parking brake. Connectivity to the outside world from the comfort of the Yaris Hybrid interior has never been easier through the new multimedia system that incorporates a 7-inch touchscreen display and full smar-
“In Ireland the Toyota Yaris is available in five trim levels.”
The Hybrid gets an electric motor with limited electric zero emissions driving ability as part of its power train. The Hybrid’s lithium-ion battery has 19% greater capacity than the outgoing hybrid. This hybrid combination boosts power output to 116hp. Fuel consumption is quoted at 3.9 l/100km. Emissions are low at 88g/km CO2. The 72hp, 1 litre produces 127g/km CO2 and the 125hp 1.5 produces 118g/km CO2.
The Yaris’s numbers make impressive reading. Total system power is 85kW – enough for a sensible 0-100km/h time of 9.7 seconds. And the efficiency figures are pretty dazzling, when you consider that this is what Toyota terms a ‘self-charging hybrid’, without the need to plug it in. On the road, the first thing that strikes you is the chassis. The overall set-up strikes an appealing balance between composure and comfort. The Yaris feels responsive, especially around town. The turning circle is among the smallest in the class and it’s certainly a car that feels adept at nipping down narrow side streets and through small gaps in traffic. Great for city driving, composed motorway and general cruising and you’re left with one of the more refined superminis currently on the market. Even when the engine kicks in, the hybrid system means that it’s more of a distant,

slightly grumbly drone than anything else. There’s also a huge bundle of safety kit, with the Toyota Safety Sense 2 package standard on all models. That includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking. The system can also detect pedestrians at night, and it’ll spot cyclists during the day, too. Also included is emergency steering assist, which will provide small and automatic corrective steering inputs if it thinks you’re going to have a collision, road sign detection, active cruise control and automatic high-beam. There’s also a safety first - a central airbag, which can prevent you smacking into your front-seat passenger in the event of a side impact. The Yaris scored 5 Stars at Euro NCAP testing.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION Model Toyota Yaris Hybrid 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol, 59kw motor
Conclusion The fourth-generation Yaris has a new energetic and sporty look. There’s something about how the hybrid tech just works so well as a combination. The car is quiet, feels balanced, offers brilliant fuel economy with no effort and at no time does it feel compromised in terms of quality. Add in good connectivity and safety tech and it should be right at the top of your list of small car purchases. 30

LAMBORGHINI ESPADA 400 GT
n 2022 Lamborghini is celebrating the V12: the legendary 12-cylinder engine that has powered its most iconic cars for almost 60 years. They include the Espada 400 GT, which was the first four-seat vehicle by Lamborghini and was its biggest selling model for years. Encapsulating an exceptional approach to technical innovation, thanks to the front-mounted 4-litre Lamborghini V12 engine it was always an extremely fast grand tourer despite the step up in size.

The “pure” V12 combustion engine in its final form will go out of production before the end of 2022, when the last Aventador Ultimae is made. From next year, the heir to the Aventador will be fitted with a new plug-in hybrid version of the V12 engine. Ferruccio Lamborghini aimed to produce the fastest, most luxurious and comfortable grand tourer Ever since the start of his venture into automobile manufacturing, company founder Ferruccio Lamborghini stated his objective very clearly. He wanted to make the best grand tourer around: a sports car that was not only fast but also comfortable and luxuriously finished. Presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1968, the Espada 400 GT perfectly embodied this idea for over a decade. The Espada could comfortably seat four adults and had more space for both luggage and passengers than the 400 GT 2+2 (its predecessor) and the Islero 400 GT 2+2. In addition, the Espada featured truly outstanding finishing, with generous amounts of leather and other refined materials, as well as the option of fitting air conditioning. Power steering was introduced as an option in 1969 and it was included as standard from 1972 onwards. A version with automatic transmission was available from 1974.
ESPADA 400 GT: THE LEGENDARY V12 LAMBORGHINI In a year full of V12 celebrations, find out about the first four-seat Lamborghini.
Taking the V12 engine to 4 litres The technical cornerstone of the Espada was the 60° V12 engine that was first produced in 1963 with a displacement of 3.5 litres, which had already been increased to 4 litres (3929 cc) in 1964. It is a remarkable example of engine development technologies, and it was capable of delivering 325 hp at 7200 rpm when it was first fitted in the Espada. This increased to 350 hp at 7500 rpm in the Espada Series II, which was presented in 1970. Fed by six Weber 40 DCOE side-draft carburetors, the V12 had a compression ratio of 9.5:1 (which increased to 10.7:1 from the Series II onwards) and two chain-driven overhead camshafts per bank. It weighed just 232 kg thanks to substantial use of aluminum to make not only the cylinder head but also the crankcase and the pistons. It was front-mounted in a position that was slightly further forward compared to the previous Lamborghini 350/400 GT engines, in order to make the interior roomier. Thanks to the large opening below the aluminum hood, it was easily accessible. The chassis was based on that of the 400 GT but it was lengthened so that the wheelbase reached 2650 mm and it was also widened, with the wheel track increasing to 149 cm. It had four-wheel independent suspension, with double wishbones and coil springs. In November 1968, an Espada “Lan32

LAMBORGHINI ESPADA 400 GT comat” with hydropneumatic suspension went on display at the Turin Motor Show. The system was made available on demand, but in the end it was chosen by very few owners. The Espada was an extremely fast grand tourer that was capable of reaching a top speed of between 245 and 260 km/h and keeping up with the sportier Miura in most conditions. The Espada’s commercial success When it was first unveiled, the Espada was the fastest four-seat car in the world. Featuring boxy shapes as part of a highly innovative design by Carrozzeria Bertone, it proved to be a long-lasting commercial success. Its versatility and roomy interiors – despite a height of just 119 cm – meant that it was suitable for much more frequent use, thus significantly expanding the customer base. A total of 1226 cars were produced across the three series: 176 of the Espada 400 GT Series 1 between 1968 and 1969, 578 of the Espada 400 GTE Series II between 1970 and 1972, and 472 of the Espada 400 GTS Series III between 1972 and 1978. The Espada VIP with a mini-bar and a Brionvega television The Espada VIP was presented in 1971. It was based on the Espada 400 GTE Series II and just 12 of the vehicles were made. The first models in this special series of cars came in a special orange hue and had orange and black leather upholstery. Later vehicles were made in other colour combinations. Inside, the Espada VIP had a mini-bar and a refrigerator in the rear side panels and a Brionvega Algol 11 television on top of the transmission tunnel to keep the passengers in the rear seats entertained. The VIP is one of the most sought-after models among Espada collectors today.

Paul McCartney’s Espada made a splash One of the most famous Lamborghini Espada owners is Sir Paul McCartney. The former Beatle was a Lamborghini enthusiast and he bought a right-hand-drive 1972 Espada Series III with manual transmission, red paintwork and a red leather interior. His wife Linda often drove the car, but one time it rolled into a nearby pond after she left it in neutral and forgot to put on the handbrake. It was hauled out of the water after three days and later sold to new owners, who went on to use it for a number of years. Subsequently, it ended up being part of the “decor” in an English pub. It was sold to an unknown enthusiast in 2005 and it is thought that it may now be in Austria. From VIP owners to the silver screen Many celebrities have expressed their fondness for the Espada over the years. For example, since 1986 the famous American television host Jay Leno – who has always been a car enthusiast – has owned one of the very first Espada Series 2 models, which was made in 1969. EVO magazine founder Harry Metcalfe has also owned an Espada for many years. It is a right-hand-drive 1970 Series II and he took part with it in the Espada and Islero 50th Anniversary initiative organised by Automobili Lamborghini Polo Storico in 2018. There have been numerous films featuring an Espada, including around 50 significant titles. The most famous among fans of the model is the 1973 Italian movie “Flatfoot” starring Carlo Pedersoli, who was better known as Bud Spencer. Largely filmed in Naples and the surrounding area, it sees the protagonist pursuing an Espada uphill around a series of hairpin bends in a long chase sequence that ends outside the Church of Sant’Antonio a Posillipo.

PEUGEOT 208 GT
he Peugeot 208 is a small car with a big personality. Its low figure, long bonnet and smooth curves give it an intriguing look, while its sporty exterior is further enhanced by the range of bright and original body colours available. From the front, the all-new Peugeot 208’s detailed grille steals the limelight, complemented by new triple white LED lights. These are mirrored by another set of triple white LED lights at the rear of the vehicle, giving the new 208 an irresistibly sporty feel from every angle. In Ireland you can choose from three trim levels – Active (from €22,370), Allure (from €25,230) and GT Line (from €27,780). The e-208 is available in all three levels too, but also as a top of the range GT model (from €32,980). My test car which was a 1.2-litre PureTech automatic 8-speed, with a few extras like 180-degree colour reversing camera, will cost you €30,085. Road tax is €200. If you want petrol or diesel in your 208, you have some good options. There is a 1.2-litre entry level model with 75 hp and five speed manual gearbox. For a bit more power, enjoy the 1.2-litre turbo petrol with 100 hp (6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic) or 130 hp (8-speed automatic). There’s also a 1.5-litre diesel manual available with 100 hp and returning fuel consumption of 4.2 l/100 km (WLTP). The e-208 is powered by a 50 kWh battery with 136 hp and a WLTP range of 350 km. Standard equipment includes 16” alloy wheels, spare wheel, multifunctional leather steering wheel, hands free start, air conditioning, cruise control, traffic sign recognition, auto headlamps, rear parking sensors and
7” touchscreen with Apple Car Play and Android Auto. My 208 GT test car came in Faro yellow with a 1.2-litre 102 hp engine. Equipment highlights include 17” alloys, frameless electro-chrome rear view mirror, full LED headlamps, LED side indicators, high beam assist, reverse camera with Visiopark 180, ambient lighting, GT Line badge and styling, automatic climate control, automatic lights and wipers, electric parking brake, and electric folding mirrors. The new Peugeot 208 sits on the PSA Group’s latest generation vehicle platform, CMP (Common Modular Platform). Dedicated to segments B and C, this new vehicle base complements the EMP2 (Efficient Modular Platform). The new Peugeot 208 is 30 kg lighter than the car it replaces and comes with improved aerodynamics and reduced roll resistance. Under the bonnet of our test car was a 1.2 PureTech 100. It’s a three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that delivers 102hp of power and 205Nm of torque. Now I realise that none of this sounds hugely impressive, but when attached to a 8-speed automatic and placed inside a vehicle that doesn’t weigh much, you get a hatch that really likes to move – specially in sport mode. The 0-100km/h time is reported to be 10.9 seconds but since you’re sitting quite low to the ground the 208 feels faster. And I must say that the three-cylinder engine under heavy revs sounds a lot better than I expected. What’s more, when you change driving modes and ease off the accelerator you’ll get a combined fuel consumption of 5.9L/100km with emissions that sit at 124g/km. Around the corners, the 208 holds a tight

The 208 GT is absolutely what I want in a small hatchback; it looks great, it goes well, it handles superbly and it’s a lot of fun.

U
pcycling of the highest order: a legendary classic is transformed into a newly designed and modernised electric car for emission-free driving. Sir Paul Smith, long familiar to fans of the iconic British brand that has been in business of over 50 years, is the creative mind behind this collaboration. The presentation of this sustainable project at the Salone Del Mobile 2022 in Milan provided a fitting stage for Sir Paul Smith and Oliver Heilmer, Head of MINI Design, to discuss sustainable approaches to automotive design. Only last summer, Paul Smith presented the MINI STRIP at the IAA motor show in Munich: a radically reduced, sustainable concept car. Paul Smith’s MINI Recharged model now revisits this idea to explore the possibilities of sustainable design. “Three things describe this car perfectly: quality, sustainability and functionality,” the designer explains. “This car also respects the past,” Smith adds. With this oneoff, Paul Smith is revisiting an even older project that has linked him to MINI for over 20 years: in 1998 he created the MINI Paul Smith Edition, limited to 1,800 vehicles. The prototype of this unique edition was painted a bright blue based on a swatch taken from one of Paul Smith’s favourite shirts. The new unique model retains this unmistakable, memorable shade of colour, while the lime green battery box recalls a 1990s colour palette. Despite the redesign, however, the original ethos of the car remains. The project is also about respecting heritage and timeless design – in particular, the iconic work of Sir Alec Issigonis, creator of the first Mini. “When you move into your old aunt’s flat, out of respect you don’t change everything, but you do some modernising,” is how Smith puts it. Sir Alec Issigonis developed the classic Mini in response to the oil crisis of 1959. Minimum fuel consumption, maximum use of space – that was the idea that convinced millions of people over many decades to invest in a Mini, and is still partly responsible for the success of MINI today. The radically reduced and sustainable concept of the MINI Strip continues in the interior of the newly designed car. By deliberately leaving out trim parts, the bodyshell with its bare, unclad floor pan dominates the interior, with rustic floor mats made of recycled rubber on top. In addition to innovative, resource-saving materials, Paul Smith’s design leaves out entire instruments in other places: a magnet next to the steering wheel accommodates the smartphone, which, apart from the speedometer, replaces almost all the old buttons and functions on the dashboard. The steering wheel in his exclusive model can be completely removed to facilitate getting in and out of the car – both an innovative solution as well as a tongue-in-cheek quip symbolic of Paul Smith’s trademark wit.
“We have made a 1990s car totally relevant for today,” is how the designer describes it. “Ideas are never the problem, you can find them everywhere. The challenge is to implement them. Here it worked. A dream has come true,” he says. The engineers from ‘Recharged Heritage Limited’ are also responsible for making this dream a reality. The new MINI partner converted the classic Mini into an emission-free vehicle by installing a 72-kilowatt electric motor. MINI already offers series-manufactured, locally emission-free driving pleasure with the all-electric MINI Cooper SE (combined power consumption: 17.6 – 15.2 kWh/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km) and the MINI Cooper SE Countryman (fuel consumption combined: 2.1 - 1.7 l/100 km according to WLTP, 2.1 - 1.9 l/100 km according to NEDC; electricity consumption combined: 15.5 - 14.8 kWh/100 km according to WLTP, 14.8 - 14.1 kWh/100 km according to NEDC, CO2 emissions combined: 47 - 39 g/ km according to WLTP, 48 - 44 g/km according to NEDC) with plug-in hybrid drive and is on its way to delivering an all-electric future. For the purposes of exhibiting the unique design at the Salone del Mobile 2022 in Milan, the Paul Smith showroom will be designed in the striking colours of the MINI Recharged by Paul Smith. At the Salone del Mobile, visitors will have the opportunity to see the newly designed model as well as last year’s MINI STRIP for themselves. More details about the MINI Recharged project and new partner ‘Recharged Heritage Limited’ will be revealed soon.

H
and-building of the Nevera will now continue at a rate of up to 50 units each year, delivered to customers all over the world.
Finished in a striking pearlescent shade of Callisto Green with Painted Graphite Vertex wheels and Sand Alcantara interior, this first car was showcased at last month’s Goodwood Festival of Speed in a series of full throttle sideways runs up the famous Hillclimb. Known as car ‘#000’, and finished with a numbered plaque, it will remain in the possession of Bugatti Rimac as a demonstrator and marketing car. The first cars destined to be delivered to customers are already being assembled, with each Nevera taking 5 weeks at the final assembly line, while many of its parts and systems are being made months prior at Rimac facilities. They will soon be delivered worldwide through Rimac Automobili’s global network of 25 official dealer partners, which stretches across the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The first year of Nevera production is already sold out, as eager customers hope to experience the world’s first
all-electric hypercar. The Nevera was developed entirely from scratch, with most key systems developed and made in-house by Rimac. To achieve the extremely high-performance targets that the team has set for the Nevera, all major components had to be custom developed. An entirely new generation battery system, inverter, gearbox, motor, control systems, infotainment and many more, were developed specifically for the Nevera. Throughout the development process the powertrain was redesigned three times, in a process lasting more than two years, with each iteration pushing the envelope of performance further than before. Its peerless attention to detail and dedication to perfection has already secured Nevera the title of world’s fastest accelerating production car, alongside being named the Best Hypercar by Robb Report, Hypercar of the Year by GQ and Best Electric Performance Car by Top Gear. As well as its unrivaled performance, this first production car showcases the variety of customization options available to Nevera customers. There are 36 different pre-defined paint colors and the option to go bespoke, a selection
of in-house-designed liveries, three levels of exposed carbon fiber – including a full bare carbon body – and an enormous selection of colorful leathers, Alcantara, contrasting accents and metal finishes for the interior. The promise is that each of the 150 Neveras completed will be totally unique. In tandem with the development of the car, Rimac has also been developing its aftersales and customer care programmes. Specialistic digital diagnostic tools have been built from the ground-up to monitor and update the cars throughout their lifetime. Every dealer partner will be given specific training and detailed service and repair information, and a dedicated team has been created: Rimac Service Team to be able to travel worldwide to diagnose potential problems. The target is that the experience of owning a Nevera will be just as extraordinary as driving it. The development and homologation process was an extraordinary journey for the whole team. Starting with initial experimental prototypes, leading on to validation prototypes and then pre-series cars, no fewer than 18 prototype examples of Nevera were painstakingly tested in every conceivable environment and measurable aspect, from the freezing Arctic Circle to a high humidity 48oC climatic chamber. A rigorous four-year crash testing program saw the destruction of nine cars in 45 separate crash tests – all of which the Nevera passed with flying colors to allow customers to experience and own Rimac’s flagship model in all main markets. Mate Rimac, CEO of the Rimac Group, said: “At the beginning of the Nevera journey, we ran thousands of vir-

tual simulations and experimented with countless designs before eventually, the time came to create the very first working prototypes. At this time, around 300 people were working in the company, and now as we enter full production, our company has grown five-fold to have over 1,500 colleagues and construction is well underway for our new 100.000 m² Rimac Campus. The Campus will eventually become the site for Nevera production when construction is complete, making it the fourth place where Nevera cars will have been assembled, following earlier production sites for the prototype phases and the current production facility in Zagreb, Croatia. In tandem with developing the car, Rimac has been rapidly expanding as a business, always looking to find more space. The Nevera was developed with the intention to become the cutting-edge electric hypercar it is today, ready to thrill drivers and passengers in a way they have never experienced before. I’m very much looking forward to customers taking delivery of their brand-new, highly customized cars and hearing their stories of fun behind the wheel.” The Rimac Nevera unlocks the next generation of automotive performance. Its 1,914hp is produced by four electric motors, which propels the hypercar from 0-60 mph in just 1.85 seconds, and to 100mph in 4.3 seconds. Proudly sporting a name in honor of its homeland, a nevera is an unexpected Mediterranean summer storm off the coast of Croatia. As such, the Nevera can transform from a comfortable, adept grand tourer into a pin-sharp performance machine in the blink of an eye.

y the end of my first drive, I was impressed by how much the Taycan drove like a Porsche. And I was beginning to get more comfortable with the operating controls and feel of the Taycan. I wasn’t sure what to expect from the outset. If you’re in the position to buy a premium electric Porsche the first decision you must make is whether to buy the entry-level Taycan, known somewhat straight-forwardly as the Taycan, the Taycan 4S that I drove, which gains four-wheel-drive, the Taycan Turbo, which doesn’t have a Turbo, but which is faster, or the all-out fastest model, the Taycan Turbo S which also doesn’t have a Turbo. The Turbo name if you didn’t already catch it simply identifies the more powerful models.

The Taycan 4S can be optioned with either a 79kWh or 93kWh battery. If range is a priority I’d recommend going for the Taycan Performance Battery Plus; it gets the bigger 93kWh battery and an official range of 483 (City WLTP). Taycan Turbo and Taycan Turbo S models are fitted with the 93kWh battery as standard to allow for greater performance and acceleration. This is a modern, distinctive design without being too far out of the mainstream. Traditional Porsche design elements are everywhere, from the wide stance, large wheel arches, four-point running lights, full width rear taillights, and even the sloped roof profile. All Porsche. From a bit of a distance, the Taycan almost looks like a 911 saloon especially from the side profile. I really liked the overall look. Our Taycan came with the optional 21-in Taycan exclusive design wheels. Similar to the Cayman and Boxster, the Taycan has two luggage compartments. Comparatively, the Taycan’s frunk is much smaller, and the rear trunk is substantially larger, than its mid-engine family members. There is certainly enough space for a weekend or longer road trip for a couple who packs efficiently. The back seat is usable for normal size adults, and foot-room is improved by the spaces carved out of the floor underneath the front seats. You really want for nothing in the cabin of the Taycan 4S. It’s premium with a pretty clear focus on the vehicle’s sporting intent. Black on black is the order of day here with figure-hugging front seats and in front of you a curved display providing all the necessary information while underway including a speedometer with an integrated power and regeneration gauge. As a digital display, the display can be customised to meet the needs of the driver and by Porsche over time via software updates. There’s a kind of architectural feel to the dash setup too, with semi-hidden storage below the centre console controls. Behind the steering wheel is where the drivers hands will go to find a host of traditional knobs to control the lights, windshield wipers, and cruise control. The knobs keep all the features of the vehicle needed while underway close at hand. A careful selection of buttons and knobs on the steering wheel make it easy to control volume or scroll through the display menus while keeping both hands on the wheel. Interestingly this is their first ever model that you don’t need to press a button to start. Similar to the 48
www.motorsireland.ie
Volvo C40 we reviewed in this issue, you just select drive and off you go. The Taycan sits atop a massive battery pack that serves not only to power it, but to maximise traction. Leveraging a low centre of gravity style architecture, the Taycan’s battery optimises the weight distribution in the vehicle, all but eliminating body roll and ensuring all four wheels stay grounded no matter how vicious the curves. The Taycan was a joy to drive. The open road is home to the Taycan, as are the tight twisty back roads near my home. But here’s the thing, it’s also very comfortable. Smooth over all surfaces and also very quiet, the road noise absorption is top notch – something that can make or break a weekend road-trip frankly. Unless you’re a range conserving type person, live your life in the sport modes which is great when combined with the optional Porsche Electric Sport Sound. It gives you a great drive, but also a great feel with tight handling and a grippy road presence. Thrown into corners the Taycan never argues, it complies. Add in class-leading steering, which gives you excellent feedback and has pinpoint accuracy, giving you plenty of confidence through the bends, and you start to build the picture of what makes the Taycan so appealing to enthusiast drivers. Of course the acceleration is instant, throwing the heads of your passengers into the seats. Apart from missing the sound of a petrol-powered Porsche, there’s no chance a Porsche owner will regret this purchase based on the ride and handling I experienced. Conclusion The driving character is clearly Porsche. Porsche enthusiasts will be pleased that the Taycan enhances the brand, and as is always the case with Porsche, will continue to improve and evolve over time. Although less powerful when compared with the Turbo and Turbo S, the 4S felt just right to me and I didn’t feel I’d need more power to enhance the driving experience. 49
VOLVO C40 RECHARGE
VOLVO C40
RECHARGE TWIN Volvo’s first pure electric crossover.
T
his sleek but chunky compact SUV is a big deal because it’s the first-ever electric-only model from the Swedish car maker. Large 20 inch alloy wheels fill out the arches and complete the look and we love it in this Fjord blue colour. The rear end features new LED taillight technology from Volvo that features segmented LEDs and sequentially activating turn indicators for a different look than the typical fully-lit Volvo taillight. Its grille is debuting a new “Iron Mark” that houses a brand-new and improved suite of radar for the driver assistance systems — the logo is also now heated to ensure that neither ice nor snow buildup will stop the systems from functioning. It would appear the design and technology teams are using the C40 to debut some new ideas both inside and out. The Scandinavian interior is a great mix of luxury, sport, and minimalism. On the inside it’s the usual high quality you’d expect from Volvo with a high quality feel but with a difference. Don’t spend time searching for a leather trim option because the Volvo C40 interior is a leather-free zone. Volvo has ditched the option in another move that’s aiming for a greener footprint. Fear not though, because if you’re after comfort and quality you’ll be happy to hear that the C40 feels very luxurious. It’s just a little more sustainable than older models. The recycled materials felt every bit as polished as suede and leather. In fact, the cabin of the C40 is really impressive. The Android-based infotainment system is a treat if you’re a fan of Google’s suite of apps. Google’s nifty voicepowered Assistant and the ever-dependable Maps functionality make getting from A to B pretty simple. It has the same huge door bins that you’d find in the XC40, plus plenty of other useful storage spaces. There are multiple USB-C connections, and Volvo’s portrait-oriented central touchscreen is home to one of the easiest to use infotainment systems around. The front seats are very comfortable and, despite the C40 Recharge’s slope-tail silhouette, rear-seat headroom is sufficient even for tall adults. A panoramic glass sunroof gives great light to the cabin. The cargo

VOLVO C40 RECHARGE area behind the split-folding rear seat backrest is large, and there’s a small 31-litre frunk under the bonnet, perfect for storing charging cables and small items. The new Volvo C40 Recharge is available in front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) guises, with the AWD variant benefitting from twin electric motors, as opposed to a single motor in the FWD edition. With the C40 Recharge (as with its XC40 Recharge sibling) Volvo has simplified the EV driving experience by omitting a starter button and handbrake. You simply get into the car, shift the gear selector to D and you drive away. The new C40 Recharge comes with a 78kWh lithium-ion battery that provides the car with a driving range of up to 431kms (FWD) or 441kms (AWD), and the car does come with rapid-charging capability. At the car’s maximum charging speed of 150kW, the battery can be charged from 0-80% in just 37 minutes, while a full charge from a regular 7.4kW home wallbox charger takes around 12 hours (0-100%).
The platform underpinning this car is Volvo’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) that also underpins the Polestar 2 and XC40 Recharge. Like the XC40 recharge, it is quick and comfortable, with a 78 -kilowatt-hour battery pack that can deliver up to 441 kilometres (AWD) in range. They both have two electric motors that produce up to 408 horsepower. Volvo claims the C40 Recharge Twin will accelerate 0-100km/h in 4.7 seconds. This makes it almost as quick as the expensive dual-motor versions of the Tesla Model 3. Volvo does give the driver plenty of options when it comes to the way the C40 Recharge drives. A menu easily accessible via the central screen lets the driver select different levels of regenerative braking and steering assistance, for example. The C40 is a clear indicator of where the brand is heading. It’s certainly a more calming commute than any of its piston-powered stablemates:
quieter, more refined and responsive; more integrated with its various driver-safety responses; and much, much quicker. The C40 Recharge lunges off the line roughly a second and a half quicker than a gas-powered XC40 T5, which it so closely resembles. They are figures that not too long ago were for a Porsche 911 or other such performance cars. The C40 is a joy on long journeys and when driven on twisty, challenging back roads it remained well composed and exhibited minimal body roll despite its elevated ride height. The instant torque offered by the two electric motors is all you could ever ask for on these roads and the AWD setup meant grip levels were high. Volvo has committed to introducing electric-only new models from 2030. The C40 range starts at €53,730 net of grant ‘Recharge Plus’ FWD model – just a little more than the equivalent XC40. Our ‘Twin Pro’ test car is priced at €68,950.
Conclusion The XC40 Recharge has already proven Volvo’s electric motoring capabilities, and the C40 Recharge progresses things on. With a great mix of style, technology and performance, the C40 Recharge has impressed us with everything it can do. I think many will be won over with the C40 but price may have some searching for a more affordable option.

FORD MUSTANG MACH-E
T
he first-ever Ford Mustang to break out from the coupe and convertible form is called the Mustang Mach-E and we were lucky enough to get behind the wheel and give you a full review. In a move that stretches the boundaries of what a Mustang can really be, it’s a battery-electric midsize SUV that will compete head-to-head with the Tesla Model Y and other premium electric SUV’s. This is a new reality and the Mach-E certainly looks exciting. Whether Ford should have called its first electric effort a “Mustang,” especially one that’s a SUV is debatable. It’s understood Ford wanted to create some buzz for it, give it a sporty shape, and tout its performance capability. So, “Mustang Mach-E” it is. In design, the Mach-E does show that it belongs in the Mustang family. There’s that very familiar Mustang front end with aggressive, angular headlights and front fascia, though they surround a ‘grill’ that’s closed off. The tapered roofline sweeps back to wide rear haunches, that then pinch off nicely into a very Mustang looking rear end, an almost fastback look with those distinctive vertical Mustang tri-stripe red rear lights.

FORD MUSTANG MACH-E A different kind of Pony goes electric.
The interior of the Mach-E is all singing and dancing with technology. A substantial 15.5-inch portrait touchscreen runs the latest Ford SYNC infotainment system that mirrors smartphone control layouts, ditching clunky menus. There’s even machine learning involved. It combines conversational speech recognition, internet search results and machine learning intelligence to make time-saving recommendations based upon previous journeys. Inside there is a premium Bang & Olufsen stereo, signature Mustang double-cowl instrument binnacle and a fixed panoramic glass sunroof. The design is sleek, minimal and airy, without the cocooning cockpit you’d find in the Mustang coupe, the Mach-E SUV prioritises occupant comfort and entertainment. The Mustang Mach-E measures in at 4713mm in length, 1625mm in height and 1881mm in width, so it commands a strong presence on the road. Due to the bespoke EV platform, the cabin floor is completely flat which benefits the second row occupants in terms of legroom. With plenty of headroom also on offer, the Mustang Mach-E has enough passenger space to accommodate five adults comfortably.

FORD MUSTANG MACH-E tery sizes offering driving range up to a potential 610 km, and a range topping Mach-E GT with 487hp. The Ford Mustang Mach-E GT will feature all-wheel drive and extended-range battery as standard. When it arrives in Ireland, it will be the range topper with 487hp, 860Nm of torque and 0-100 km/h acceleration in just 3.7 seconds. The Mustang Mach-E can be charged at home using a 7.4 kW wallbox in just over 8 hours to get to 80%. DC fast-charging up to 150 kW is also possible with 91 kWh battery variants, using an IONITY charger for example. This will add about 80% battery charge in 40 minutes. 115 kW fast charging is available with standard battery variants. In Ireland, Mustang Mach-E is offered in three series: RWD, AWD and GT, as well as a limited number of First Edition vehicles available at launch. We were lucky enough to drive a First Edition version for our test. Standard equipment on rear wheel drive models includes 18” silver alloy whe-
els; puddle light Mustang logo projection; heated front seats; FordPass Connect; e-latch keyless entry system with B-pillar keypad access; and Pre-Collision Assist. Standard battery versions are priced from €53,100, while the extended range RWD version is available from €64,400. All wheel drive versions come with 19” black machined alloy wheels; red brake calipers; side cladding and wheel arches in piano black; rear view camera; hands free tailgate; 360-degree camera; B&O Premium Sound System 10-Speaker; advanced active park assist; and a full panoramic roof. With the standard battery, this model is priced from €68,550. While with the extended range battery the model is priced from €76,100. Of all the new-generation EVs that have emerged the Mach-E is up there with the very best for the way that it drives. For starters, it feels considerably quicker than its 0-100km/ h time suggests. Press the throttle and it takes off with urgency, which tails off but still feels powerful as you home in on the speed limit. The one-pedal drive mode works
really well once you get used to it. Ford knows a thing or two about driver engagement and the Mustang Mach-E doesn’t come up short. True, it won’t mask its mass and size quite as effortlessly as, say, a Porsche Taycan does, but we’d never expect it to anyway. It steers and changes direction quite quickly, with appreciable energy and decent enough body control. Grip is good and the car is more fun than I thought it would be, even if you do need to warm up to it a bit. You have a choice of Whisper, Active and Untamed driving modes that will change the driving dynamics based on your needs. A nice feature with the Mach-E is ‘Intelligent Range’. Mustang Mach-E’s innovative Intelligent Range can accurately estimate how much range the all-electric SUV has left, helping reduce anxiety about when and where you can recharge. Ford will upgrade Intelligent Range through Ford Power-Up software updates, designed to deliver even more accurate prediction capabilities for connected Mustang Mach-E, keeping the fully electric SUVs at the forefront of technology. Industry safety body, Euro NCAP, awarded the Mustang
Mach-E a top five-star rating in 2021. Standard safety equipment is reassuringly extensive, with a host of active on-board features helping the Mach-E achieve a 92% score for adult safety, a score of 86% for child protection, and 82% for safety assist technology. All cars include systems such as Forward Collision Warning, Dynamic Brake Support, Automated Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Distance Alert, Evasive Steer Assist, and Blind Spot Warning (BLIS) with Cross Traffic Alert. Conclusion Ford can be rightly accused of exploiting the Mustang brand, but is also gambling with it, betting that this new SUV is charismatic enough to change the generational conversation, from revs and V8 muscle to kWh. The range is noteworthy with the extended battery, and it does look very good. Overall the Mach-E is an impressive piece of kit. It doesn’t exactly stand out from the crowd, but it effectively blends in as a very strong competitor. I can see this doing well for Ford as Irish buyers look for something different in the EV market.

ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM
A
daptations to the eighth-generation Phantom include ‘light-touch’ visual and aesthetic enhancements in line with client requests and feedback.
Rolls-Royce products enjoy an expansive lifetime, ultimately becoming timeless expressions of good taste, beauty and luxurious perfection. Phantom occupies a unique, pinnacle position in this regard, being revered for its timeless elegance. The eighth-generation of Phantom was presented in 2017. In creating the new expression, Rolls-Royce designers and engineers have been guided by the requests of clients, who have implored Rolls-Royce not to make any major changes to an already iconic motor car. In answer to these client demands, only the lightest of design touches, embellishments, and adaptations have been incorporated. Indeed, it is not about what should be changed, but in fact, what should be preserved and protected.
58
www.motorsireland.ie
A NEW EXPRESSION The most obvious and important feature to be retained is Phantom’s commanding presence. This has been further enhanced by a new polished horizontal line between the daytime running lights above the Pantheon Grille. This gives Phantom a new and assertive modernity, reflecting its driver-focused character. A subtle geometric change to the Pantheon Grille makes the ‘RR’ Badge of Honour and Spirit of Ecstasy mascot more prominent when viewed from the front. The grille itself is now illuminated, a feature debuted and popularised in Ghost. The headlights are graced with intricate laser-cut bezel starlights, creating a visual connection with the Starlight Headliner inside, and adding further surprise and delight to Phantom’s night-time presence. Phantom’s side profile retains Rolls-Royce’s signature short front and long rear overhang, long wheelbase and broad c-pillar, the latter giving greater privacy for occupants. The silhouette preserves the elegant key lines running from the

ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM Spirit of Ecstasy to the tapering rear tail. The ‘split-belt’ line begins at the front fender and curves gently towards the rear door, emphasising the car’s long dash-to-axle proportions, before falling gently towards the lantern-like rear lamps. The heavily undercut ‘waft line’ creates a strong shadow, visually signalling the marque’s unequalled ‘Magic Carpet Ride’. The side profile is further enhanced with a suite of new wheels. A 3D, milled, stainless steel wheel with triangular facets is available to commission in a fully or part-polished finish. Alternatively, Phantom may be graced with a truly elegant disc wheel, recalling the romance of 1920’s Rolls-Royce motor cars. This disc wheel is produced in both polished stainless steel and black lacquer, perfectly encapsulating the sense of flight on land. Responding to Phantom clients who have previously requested a darkened chrome grille surround, black bonnet reins, windscreen surround and side frame finishers, these may now be commissioned. This aesthetic now enables Rolls-Royce to transform Phantom into the lightest of light or the darkest of dark appearances. Phantom’s sumptuous interior remains almost unaltered: the steering wheel has been made slightly thicker, providing a more connected and immediate point of contact for the owner-driver. Phantom and Phantom Extended have distinct characters of their own, representing two different seats of power. Phantom is now predominantly favoured by the ever-increasing number of clients wishing to be in the driving seat themselves. For those preferring to command the road from the rear seat, Phantom Extended offers the definitive super-luxurious chauffeur-driven experience.
ROLLS-ROYCE CONNECTED Now, Phantom includes the debut of ‘Rolls-Royce Connected’. This enables the owner to send an address directly to the motor car from Whispers, the Rolls-Royce private-members’ Application, providing seamless navigation to an event, restaurant, dealership or even the Home of Rolls-Royce itself. ‘Rolls-Royce Connected’ also displays the motor car’s location, security status and current ‘health’ condition on Whispers; at the touch of a button, the owner can contact a preferred dealership for any servicing requirements or information about the car. THE ‘POLES OF LUXURY’ As the marque’s pinnacle product, Phantom attracts an elite stratum of Rolls-Royce clients. Established and successful, at the top of their field and often in the public eye, these are determined and demanding people. It is no coincidence that Phantom attracts the most ambitious and challenging Bespoke commissions ever undertaken by Rolls-Royce.
character – youthful, dynamic and daring. At the other, Phantom transforms into an ode to luxury grandeur and timelessness.
Italian mill for its durable yet luxurious appearance, the other derived from bamboo fibres, selected for its lustrous finish.
The resulting creations − each an artistic masterpiece in its own right − illustrate a broader truth: since its inception, Phantom has always been whatever the client wants it to be; not only the ‘best car in the world’, but the best car for them and their world.
The challenge of the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective is to accommodate this vast expanse of client characteristics and desires in one pinnacle product. The eighth-generation Phantom has thus been deliberately designed to offer a ‘blank canvas’ for Bespoke personalisation, capable of becoming whatever the client wishes it to be, and a true reflection of their individual style and character.
Self-evidently, there is no such thing as a ‘typical’ Phantom client. Spanning the ‘poles of luxury’, they may be ever-younger or older, modern or traditional, self-made or from long-established wealth. Their commissions reflect a full spectrum of interests and influences. At one extreme, Phantom takes on a subversive, almost rebellious
Phantom’s great strength and appeal is that it allows clients to position themselves anywhere between these ‘poles of luxury’, defining luxury on their own terms. And wherever that point happens to lie, they have the assurance that Phantom itself is − technically, materially, aesthetically and dynamically − still the ‘best car in the world’.
Both materials share an original repeating pattern based on an abstract interpretation of the Spirit of Ecstasy. In the silken textile, the design is smaller and woven into the fabric to create a more visually stimulating finish. It also appears in Phantom’s Gallery, right in the occupant’s line of sight, and on key touchpoints such as the armrest and centre console. The bamboo fabric is embroidered with larger icons, presenting a tufted appearance commonly found in interior design. This more resilient material is placed on the lower elements of the interior where they will need to withstand most contact.
PHANTOM PLATINO: THE RETURN OF FINE TEXTILES To mark the introduction of Phantom Series II and to illustrate Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke capability, the marque has created a new Bespoke masterpiece, Phantom Platino, named after the silver-white finish of the coveted and precious metal, platinum. Phantom Platino continues Rolls-Royce’s exploration into fabric interiors, a story which began in 2015 with the launch of Serenity, a truly Bespoke Phantom with a hand-painted, hand-embroidered silk interior. Heralding the next step in this significant journey, Phantom Platino introduces materials other than leather, an area of exploration for Rolls-Royce and a move that demonstrates a greater acceptance of alternative interior upholsteries. Echoing the marque’s formative days, the front seats of Phantom Platino are finished in fine Rolls-Royce leather, while those in the rear are upholstered in fabric. The beautiful tone-on-tone of Platino’s interior is achieved by combining two differing fabrics; one created in an

The same design also appears on Phantom’s dashboard timepiece. The surround is made from a 3D printed ceramic, a truly contemporary execution of a traditional material. Set into an iced finish woodset, the tonal properties of the interior take Phantom to a beautiful and unsurpassed level of opulence. The largest canvas in Phantom is the Starlight Headliner. In a unique design created especially for Rolls-Royce Platino, the ‘stars’ are placed to draw the eye rearwards, with whimsical shooting stars following the sweeping arc of the pattern. Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, says, “We are acutely conscious of our clients’ esteem for and love of their Phantoms. They felt it could not be improved; but while naturally respecting that view, we believe it is always possible, indeed necessary, to gently go further in our pursuit of absolute perfection. “The subtle changes we have made for the new Phantom Series II have all been minutely considered and meticulously executed. As Sir Henry Royce himself said: ‘Small things make perfection, but perfection is no small thing’.”
