elcome to the latest issue of Motors Ireland. With the new 750S, McLaren defines a new benchmark for supercar performance and driver exhilaration. The lightest and most powerful series-production McLaren, the new V8-engined, rear-wheel drive 750S – which is available in coupe and convertible form – is unashamedly a supercar for the purist. Designed and engineered following meticulous analysis of the renowned McLaren 720S, the new 750S combines advances in weight-saving, powertrain performance, aerodynamics and dynamic excellence to elevate a benchmark driving experience to new heights. The extraordinary levels of exhilaration, precision, agility, feel and feedback that the 750S delivers are immediately apparent to the driver, even at lower speeds – and its low weight is a key factor in its dynamic performance. At just 1,389kg, it weighs 30kg less than a 720S – a clear example of McLaren’s dedication to lightweight engineering. In this issue we drive the most powerful and most expensive Kia sold in Ireland and it has immense power and performance, yet is just as comfortable in the city as it would be on the race track. When it comes to high-performance battery electric vehicles, it’s been mostly about straight line speed astonishing acceleration from zero to 100km/h that grabs the headlines. Despite that the EV driving experience has often lacked connection for the driver. But Kia’s new EV6 GT flagship delivers a more rounded experience – as well as the acceleration capabilities of a supercar. It features a personal feel, some interaction, and plenty of character. It is a multi-talented and multi-layered drive that has an enormous performance envelope, and is a worthy flagship for the EV6 line-up. Whilst the GT shares the body and general instrument and display layouts of the other versions, the rest of the car has been significantly modified to position it in the performance vehicle segment. In this edition we drive the new Citroen C5 X, which is a high-riding, front-wheel drive vehicle that’s said to combine the

best aspects of a Saloon, an Estate and an SUV. Tired of driving around in a SUV? Well if the answer is yes then you could be in luck. Measuring in at 4.8 metres, the Citroen C5 X is noticeably longer than the C5 Aircross, the largest SUV Citroen has offered until now. It starts out on 19-inch wheels that are more slender than usual, for economy reasons. To compete with SUVs, it maximises practicality. The boot measures in at 545 litres, increasing in volume to 1640 litres when the rear seats are folded forward. Primarily, it is about passenger needs. Citroen is all about ‘Advanced Comfort’; it’s expressed in the seat design and the suspension suspension setup. The car aims to replicate the ‘magic carpet’ driving style of historic Citroen saloons such as the DS and CX. In this issue we have a full lineup of Irish reviews including the BYD Atto 3, BMW i7, Kia EV6 GT, Ford E-Transit, Ora Funky Cat, Nissan Ariya, Citroën C5 X and the MG4. Our gimme 5 section has some great new cars hitting the market and we have all the latest car releases in our news section. Enjoy the read and have a great Summer.

ith the new 750S, McLaren defines a new benchmark for supercar performance and driver exhilaration. Around 30 per cent of 750S components are either new or changed in order to deliver these improvements and with them an even greater emotional connection to the car. “When you have a car recognised by so many drivers as a benchmark, to do something even better you have to examine every detail and really push hard for improvements that raise the bar again. This is what we have done with the new 750S and the light weight, V8 engine performance and outstanding dynamic abilities combine to deliver a supercar driving experience that hits new heights, with truly exhilarating levels of emotional connection.” Michael Leiters, CEO, McLaren Automotive With all available carbon fibre and lightweight options selected, the coupe weighs 1,277kg in dry lightest form, which delivers a segment-leading power-to-weight ratio of 587PS-per-tonne. This is a remarkable 193kg lighter than its closest competitor and delivers a power-to-weight advantage of 22PS. The 750S Spider is designed with the same focus on minimising weight. It features a Retractable Hard Top (RHT), rollover protection system and a bespoke rear upper structure to the monocoque constructed from carbon fibre, but such is the strength of the carbon fibre monocoque that no additional reinforcement is needed. This ensures the Spider is equally impressive in power-to-weight terms and segment-leading at 566PS-per-tonne, at its lightest dry weight of 1,326kg. The extraordinary levels of exhilaration, precision, agility, feel and feedback that the 750S delivers are immediately apparent to the driver, even at lower speeds – and its low weight is a key factor in its dynamic performance. At just 1,389kg (DIN), it weighs 30kg less than a 720S – a clear example of McLaren’s dedication to lightweight engineering. This philosophy of performance-based innova-

tion is evidenced by features such as carbon fibre-shelled racing seats that are a combined 17.5kg lighter than the base seats in a 720S. New 10-spoke ultra-lightweight forged wheels are the lightest ever fitted as standard on a series-production McLaren and save 13.8kg. The new driver instrument display is lighter by 1.8kg. Even the windscreen glass contributes to weight reduction, providing a 1.6kg saving. The 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 engine with power of 750PS and torque of 800Nm provides ferocious performance, with the 750S capable of 0-100km/h in 2.8 seconds and 0-200km/h in 7.2 seconds (Spider 7.3 seconds). This is quicker than its closest competitor on both measures. In-gear acceleration is amplified by optimised transmission gearing and a revised kickdown control strategy. McLaren’s Proactive Chassis Control linked-hydraulic suspension, which is renowned for combining astonishingly 12

www.motorsireland.ie

precise body control with a remarkably compliant ride, is now even more impressive in new PCC III form. The new-generation system delivers even higher levels of suspension performance and is integral to the outstanding dynamic abilities of the 750S. The suspension springs are softer at the front and stiffer at the rear than in the 720S, which together with reconfiguration of both the passive and active elements of the bespoke valve stack and a new approach to tuning the suspension – adjusting the accumulators in the struts, which is used for the first time in 750S – benefits ride comfort, roll control, steering feedback and cornering balance. Additionally, new spring and damper design reduces weight by 2kg. The combined hardware and software changes made for PCC III mean the dynamic breadth of 750S is even greater than its predecessor, McLaren’s new benchmark supercar

maintaining 720S levels of comfort while delivering significantly improved circuit performance. The 750S is also more agile than the benchmark car it replaces, with better front-end grip – helped by a 6mm wider front track and new suspension geometry – and McLaren’s electro-hydraulic steering, which is widely recognised for its precision and clarity of feedback, now having a faster steering ratio and new power-assistance pump. The interior of the 750S fuses innovative technology with exquisite materials, but most importantly is even more driver-focused in design. At the heart of the driver experience are new displays – both for information and instruments, with the instrument display fitted to – and moving with – the steering column. This driver-centric display is mounted in a binnacle that has the controls to select Powertrain and Handling modes located are on either side, meaning the driver can move effortlessly between Comfort, Sport and Track Active Dynamic settings while keeping their hands on the wheel and a complete focus on the road ahead. The McLaren Control Launcher (MCL) is another new McLaren technology that debuts on 750S and adds yet another dimension to the driver’s interface with the car. Activated using a button featuring the famous McLaren Speedmark, MCL allows the driver to personalise their McLaren driving experience by storing a bespoke dynamic preference – their favourite combination of aero, handling, powertrain and transmission settings – that can instantly be recalled with a push of the MCL button. Drivers will also benefit from new features such as Apple CarPlay® and the new Central Information Screen, which features richer, even more detailed graphics to further enhance the driver experience. The Rear View and Sur-

round View camera system are also upgraded, for higher definition and clarity and a new vehicle-lift system raises the front of the 750S in only four seconds compared to the 10 seconds it takes in a 720S. A heightened physical and emotional connection between driver and car is aided by bespoke engine mount tuning, as well as a new central-exit exhaust layout inspired by the McLaren P1™ that is acoustically tuned to give a distinctive clear tone and sharp crescendo at high engine speeds. 750S customers planning extensive circuit driving can opt for a track brake upgrade engineered using ceramic discs and monobloc calipers derived from the McLaren Senna system, together with a new brake booster and vacuum pump and Formula 1-inspired integrated caliper cooling technology. New Super-Lightweight Carbon Fibre Racing Seats are also available as an option, as are track-focused Pirelli P ZERO™ Trofeo R tyres and lightweight titanium wheel bolts. Visually, the 750S refines its predecessor’s design with a new lower nose section featuring an extended front splitter, narrower ‘eye socket’ intakes that enclose the headlights, new sill air intakes and rear wheelarch vents. Rear aerodynamic revisions incorporate a redesigned and lengthened rear deck that channels air towards a distinctive raised and lengthened carbon fibre active rear wing, positioned above the central-exit exhaust. Headlight surrounds are now optionally body coloured or in carbon fibre. The new rear bumper and front bumper vents are also available in McLaren’s signature lightweight material.

LAMBORGHINI REVUELTO

T flagship supercar.

o celebrate its 60th birthday, Lamborghini has given itself quite the present. This is the new Lamborghini Revuelto, the firm’s latest

While the design is typically eye-catching, the real headline for the Revuelto is the use of plug-in hybrid power. We’re pretty well acquainted with the internal-combustion engine side, a 6.5-litre V12 similar to the Aventador, which produces 814hp and 725Nm of torque with a rev limit increased to 9,500rpm. This is the most powerful V12 in Lamborghini’s history. The plug-in hybrid system uses a relatively small 3.8kWh battery that sits between the occupants in what would traditionally be the transmission tunnel. The hybrid system includes three electric motors, two on the front axle

and one on the rear, meaning the car’s four-wheel drive system powers the front wheels through electricity only. The three electric motors and the V12 combine for a total output of 1,001hp. The Revuelto’s carbon fibre tub is lighter and stiffer than that found in the Aventador, creating a car that is innately sharper than its predecessor. It features a composite front crash structure, which is a world-first for a road car, providing lightweight, ultra-safe protection. Active aerodynamics play an essential role, achieving new levels of efficiency and downforce: +61% and +66%, respectively, in high-load situations compared to the Aventador Ultimae, especially thanks to the front splitter and roof design that channels air flow to the high-efficiency rear wing. Pricing for the Revuelto is around €500,000.

GORDON MURRAY’S T.33 SPIDER

T

he heart of the T.33 Spider, is, of course, that almighty engine, with its 12 cylinders, four throttle bodies, 24 injectors and superbike-style redline. Maximum power of 617hp arrives at 10,250rpm, while 75 percent of the 333lb ft of torque is available from 2,500rpm. It wears yellow cam covers inspired by the Murray-designed 1972 Duckhams Ford LM race car, too. Based on the existing T.33 coupe, the Spider’s carbon composite bodywork is unique from the A-pillar backwards. Two lift-out roof panels can be stowed in the front luggage compartment

– or you can leave the roof in place and simply retract the rear window. The Spider will be hand-built at GMA’s new facility in Windlesham, Surrey, with first deliveries due in summer 2025. Production is limited to 100 cars, priced at £1.8 million apiece – some £500,000 more than its hard-top sibling. Incredibly, the open-air T.33 weighs just 18kg more than the equivalent coupe. A painstaking focus on weight reduction involved shaving ‘single grams from every component’. Tipping the scales at 1,108kg, the Spider weighs approximately the same as an Alpine A110 – a car Murray himself owns and admires. It’s also nearly half a tonne lighter than a Porsche 911 Cabriolet.

KTM X‑BOW GT‑XR 2023

TM has created a junior hypercar, and one of the most extreme road-legal cars yet seen. Even the hardest of hardcore sports cars are generally designed as road cars first and foremost, and if they do wind up on a GT racing grid at Spa or Silverstone, it’s usually in a re-engineered, evolutionary form. But the wild-looking KTM X‑Bow GT‑XR you can see here really was designed as a racing car first – and subsequently house-trained into a productionised road car rather than the other way round.

22

www.motorsireland.ie

We looked at our options: the X‑Bow always stood for super-light, performance, power-to-weight ratio,’ says KTM Sportcar managing director Michael Wölfling. ‘We still had a good relationship with Audi, and we decided to go with this new aluminium-block 2.5-litre engine.’ Slotted transversely amidships, it’s the same in-line five found in the Audi RS3 and TT RS, with mapping by Graz-based firm AVL to take its power output from less than 400bhp to 493bhp. (In GT2 race versions, it’s as much as 650bhp.) The new GT‑XR costs €299,150 plus taxes.

BMW i7

T

he BMW 7 Series has often been the model that showcases the latest in technology, innovation, ultimate comfort and upmarket desirability for the German automaker. The i7 is a luxury saloon with a sizable footprint. Its length is a substantial 5.4m and width is a shade under 2m, but more importantly for those on the inside, the i7’s wheelbase measures 3.22m. At the front of this upmarket saloon the upper daytime running light strips are embellished with Swarovski crystals that gleam as you walk by them. A sporty bumper with a contrast black surround for the grille and main headlights adds more flash, and there’s no missing that grille even at night – it comes outlined by an LED strip; ‘Iconic Glow’ in BMW terms. The i7 is conventional in profile. It’s got a traditional three-box shape and that’s down to its underpinnings. The i7 is built on the same platform as the 7 Series with only badges and subtle blue details distinguishing the EV versions. It has the same hard points as its petrol/diesel siblings. Mercedes’ EQS, for reference, is based around an EV-only architecture. The 5.4-metre-long i7 has a stately air about it, a look helped by a block-like and flat surfacing all around. A high-deck boot, wide-sweeping tail-lights and diffuser-like element at the bumper lend the i7’s rear some distinction too. The i7 in the xDrive60 version, comes with 544hp, all-wheel drive and a 106kWh battery. At the base of the range is the €140,175 Excellence model, which includes 19-inch double spoke alloy wheels, an electric boot lid, auto-dimming mirrors, the ‘Iconic Glow’ light-up grille, soft-close doors, the curved dashboard display that joins the 12.3-inch instrument panel and the 14.9-inch infotainment screen together, front and rear heated seats, Merino leather upholstery, panoramic glass sunroof and four-zone climate control. As standard, you also

get a Bowers & Wilkins sound system, active cruise control with braking, the ‘BMW Interaction Bar’, a head-up display and adaptive LED headlights. You can upgrade to an M Sport model for €5,540 more. That costs €145,715 and includes 20-inch ‘M Aero’ alloy wheels, black exterior trim instead of chrome, BMW’s ‘Iconic Sounds Electric’ sound effects, an M leather steering wheel and M Sport brakes with dark blue calipers. You can add as an option BMW Individual Two-tone Oxide Grey Metallic Paintwork for €14,217. You can also add a technology pack for €7,108 which includes Driving Assistant Professional, Parking Assistant Pro, Bowers and Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound. A Rear Comfort Pack adds Front and Rear Heat Comfort System, Multifunctional Rear Seats, Rear Massage Seats, Ventilated Rear Seats, Rear Side Window and Windscreen Electric Blinds. The Rear Comfort Pack is priced at €6,462. The i7’s interior is a spectacular achievement and backs up design director Adrian van Hooydonk’s claim that his team crafted the car from the inside out. BMW has managed to harmonise the elements, make the technology user-friendly, and create an environment that feels wholly modern—connected, mindful, and hugely comfortable. It’s also impeccably put together. The cockpit is a work of art, with beautiful leather, chrome and crystal glass interior. Wide use is made of Swarovski crystals, including in a full-width “Interaction Bar” on the instrument panel, which lights up in different colours and incorporates the air-conditioning vents. The touchscreen and infotainment system are gently curved and crystal clear. As mentioned BMW combine a 12.3-inch instrument display with a longer 14.9-inch main infotainment glass touchscreen. The screens are controlled by a mixture of voice, touch, steering wheel buttons and the iDrive click-wheel down on the centre console which is now presented in crystal

in the i7. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are integrated. The rear seats are sumptuous, have wireless charging pads, and speakers that allow you to conduct your phone calls via Bluetooth, and although it wasn’t fitted to our test car, there is the option of a 31.3-inch widescreen in the rear that folds down from the roof. You can connect video sources to it via HDMI or USB-C cable or stream video via a dedicated eSim data connection and Amazon Fire software. The Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround hi-fi system is superb to accompany widescreen viewing. There is 860mm of rear legroom in the car, so more than generous. The boot has a capacity of 500 litres which is adequate, but not huge. There’s also a handy under-floor storage area. Front seat occupants get two USB-C sockets in the armrest storage box, those in the rear get USB-C sockets built into the back of the front seats, under a little sliding cover. Even if the back is the best place to be to relax, the i7 proved an engaging driver’s car. It was surprisingly nimble through some very twisty terrain and made for an excellent motorway cruiser, sitting comfortably at the speed limit but with plenty more power should you need to overtake at lower speeds. The two motors deliver a total of 544hp and 745Nm with a 0-100km/h time of 4.7 seconds, figures which are impressive for such a large vehicle, yet will be surpassed by an even more potent version known as the i70 M70 released in the second half of this year in Ireland. The regenerative braking is great, allowing one-pedal driving around town, and just

the right amount of slowing to handle many country corners without having to touch the brakes By virtue of the i7’s big battery (106kWh), the range is up to 625 kilometres, with the ability to add 170km of range in 10 minutes on an ultra-fast charger. The i7 will go from 10 per cent to 80 per cent charge in 34 minutes on a 150kW charger. Conclusion The BMW i7 xDrive60 represents a significant leap forward for BMW’s flagship luxury saloon. Thanks to its impressive suspension, noise isolation, and material quality, the i7 is not just a tremendous full-size luxury saloon but it’s poised to be a proper segment leader.

KIA EV6 GT

his is the most powerful and most expensive Kia sold in Ireland and it has immense power and performance, yet is just as comfortable in the city as it would be on the race track. When it comes to high-performance battery electric vehicles, it’s been mostly about straight line speed - astonishing acceleration from zero to 100km/h that grabs the headlines. An electric vehicle from a family-centric brand sounds like something for the masses, but the EV6 GT is a little bit different with 585hp and exhilarating performance. Too short to be an SUV and not exactly a crossover. It’s also not a saloon in its traditional sense. The Kia EV6 doesn’t fall into a category very easy. Its low roofline and long bonnet along with its ground clearance makes it unique. The 21-inch alloys and neon green brake calipers make the EV6 GT stick out in the local supermarket carpark. Coloured brakes and tailgate badging aside, it would be fairly difficult to identify the GT from a standard EV6 model. Subtle differences like the headlights and the car riding 5mm lower are not easy to spot. Visual upgrades over the less expensive models are hard to spot. From the rear wing to the nice rear lightbar, the EV6 GT is a striking car in the flesh. The green seat stitching and piping only adds to the interior. The build quality and materials on the inside are decent, with a blend of artificial suede and faux leather. Kia has made a number of subtle changes to the standard EV6 interior to show the GT as its performance model. The most noticeable of these are the front sports seats. They are firm and position the body well for harder cornering or winding country roads. The rear seats are trimmed to match the front and heated but otherwise unchanged to the standard EV6. To add to the GT’s subtle ‘go-fast’ looks, the dash is still trimmed in black, but the finish is done with a carbon-fibre look across the upper front section. Another item of difference is the addition of the bright coloured ‘GT’ button for selecting the GT driving mode. Like all of the EV6 variants, the dash is a combination of touchscreens and touch buttons and dials – with a very clean look offered by the lower set of buttons switching between ventilation and radio/map controls at the touch of one button. On the dashboard is a Panoramic Dual pair of crisp 12.3-inch screens. The left infotainment screen is very responsive and operated by touch. Thankfully though, audio controls can be found on the steering wheel which makes things easy as your on the move.

KIA EV6 GT You get wireless phone charging, AM/FM and DAB+ digital radio, as well as wired Apple CarPlay and Android Audio. The GT also comes with head-up display. You get heated front and rear seats, and a tasteful 64-colour ambient lighting arrangement. The vehicle also boasts a 14-speaker Meridian premium sound system, which includes a subwoofer and four tweeters. On the road leaving the EV6 GT in Eco, Normal or Sport drive modes sees it behaving like any of the standard EV6 models, with Sport being quick, but not scary quick. Drop it into GT mode, however, and it absolutely lights things up. The throttle response becomes incredibly aggressive, while acceleration is simply supercar quick. It really isn’t the straight 0 to 100km/h performance you are paying for with the EV6 GT. What you are actually paying for with the EV6 GT is the talent of translating that sheer straight-line aggressive performance into an engaging driving experience that can be tailored to how engaged you want to be. What’s surprising is the fact that the motors pump out a colossal combined total of 430kW and 740Nm. The EV6 GT is wonderfully stable and accomplished feeling of poise and balance, along with some nicely sharp and accurate steering. The GT’s brakes are spectacular, stopping the 2400kg car with authority when needed, with repeated unfading regularity. In addition to the 0 to 100km/h in 3.5

34

www.motorsireland.ie

seconds, many suspension, braking, body stiffening and electronic performance changes have been made to go with that number. Key safety equipment includes autonomous emergency braking with junction turning and adaptive cruise control. The GT also has the ability to monitor blind spots, traffic behind you when reversing, keep centred in its lane and advise on tyre pressures. The EV6 GT comes with six airbags. The GT also gets a head up display, a 360 degree camera, front and rear parking sensors and shows the leftor right-side of the car in the instrument panel depending on which indicator is activated. Reflecting its performance capability, the GT comes with bigger mechanical brakes than other EV6 models as well as a stronger regenerative effect. It also has a unique tune of its electronically-controlled adaptive suspension and electric-assist variable gear steering as well as additional chassis bracing.

Conclusion

The Kia EV6 GT is a triumph of engineering in its ability to offer extreme performance at one end of the spectrum and relaxed, comfortable cruising at the other end. It represents a huge shift not only in the way high-performance cars perform, but also in the way it changes the value-for-money equation.

FORD E-TRANSIT

T

he arrival of the new Ford E-Transit marks a new era for the company. The launch of a new Transit is always an important event in the van world, but the Ford E-Transit is a whole new level of importance. The E-Transit is part of Ford’s bet that it can convince existing and new commercial customers to switch to electric vehicles. Buyers can choose between 135kW or 198kW power outputs depending on their needs. In each version, the motor sends power to the rear wheels via a single-speed automatic gearbox. The E-Transit is part of a major €25 billion investment by Ford into electrified vehicles by 2025. The company has stated its European commercial vehicle range will be 100 per cent zero-emission capable, all-electric or plug-in hybrid by 2024, with two thirds of commercial vehicle sales expected to be all-electric or plugin hybrid by 2030. The E-Transit provides a comprehensive standard specification and advanced technologies to make electrifying your business vehicle easier and more beneficial than ever before. The vehicle is designed to satisfy a wide range of customer use-cases, with a 68 kWh usable battery capacity as standard, providing a competitive range of up to 317 km WLTP. The E-Transit capability is delivered by the powerful motor offering 430 Nm of torque and a choice of 135 kW (185hp) or 198 kW (269hp) maximum outputs. Payload is up to 1,758 kg on the van model, and the comprehensive range totals 25 variants of van, double-cab-in-van and chassis cab body styles with multiple lengths and roof heights, as well as GVMs from 3.5 to 4.25 tonnes. E-Transit also features Ford’s unique ProPower Onboard feature, delivering up to 2.3 Kw in the cab and load area to power conversions and equipment while out at work. E-Transit is offered in two series – Leader and Trend – and all vehicles offer significantly higher specifications than the equivalent diesel model. The Leader series includes Electronic Air Temperature Control, Keyless Start, heated seats, Quickclear windscreen and heated power mirrors. E-Transit introduces the SYNC 4 communications and information system to Ford’s commercial vehicle range in Europe, offering twice the computing power of SYNC 3 and controlled via an intuitive 12-inch wipe-clean, glare-resistant touchscreen. The Trend series adds productivity-boosting features such as the Ford Connected Naviga36

tors. Its all-electric powertrain, uncompromised capability and integrated supporting Ford Pro ecosystem will streamline customers’ businesses and supercharge their productivity as they switch to fully-electric fleets,” said Hans Schep, general manager, Ford Pro, Europe. “With pricing designed to remove any barrier to entry, E-Transit is a truly compelling proposition for European businesses.” The cabin is much like the regular Transits, but the gear lever and handbrake have gone, moved to electric switches on the dashboard. This frees up space inside, which is especially noticeable if you’re the second passenger sitting in the centre seat. A 12.0-inch infotainment screen dominates the dashboard and is the hub for most functions. It’s got a crisp, clear screen with quick responses, making it easy to use. It also includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Several charging sources come in USB and 12-volt forms. Press the start button and the E-Transit comes into life and it’s not long before you realise this is one of the most enjoyable van driving experiences you’ll have. Gone is the

loud noise of a diesel engine, the lurchy sensations of a conventional gearbox, and the lag as the big body gets up to speed – the E-Transit does away with all three while simultaneously outputting no CO2. There are three driving modes to choose from – Eco, Normal and Slippery. In Normal the van’s 135kW/430Nm outputs feel quick and immediate, whereas Eco really dulls off the instantaneous acceleration in search of ultimate efficiency. We weren’t able to drive the E-Transit loaded with gear but there is good overtaking power out of the motor for swift overtakes and the power delivery is immediate – very unique in a van that is typically a slow-mover off the mark. The lack of gearshift is also nice as the van pulls right up to speed. According to Ford, the E-Transit is limited to a top speed of 130km/h. While our van was empty, the addition of the battery for the E-Transit compared to a comparable diesel Transit softened any potholes to impressive effect. It definitely reduced the often-experienced sensation of a jittery ride

you’d otherwise expect from vans. The battery is situated low underneath the load compartment, meaning body roll is no worse than a regular Ford Transit van. Likewise, it doesn’t feel noticeably heavier either. On the road there’s minimal noise from the powertrain, obviously, but the sound deadening from the load compartment also makes sure minimal noise makes its way through from the back leading to a more enjoyable driving experience. A tall driving position, big mirrors and plenty of cabin storage boost the E-Transit’s everyday appeal, while Ford has a range of options that make it even more attractive.

Conclusion

The E-Transit is very capable. The electric range won’t be ideal for a company doing long journeys across the country but it won’t be an issue for around-town deliveries and quick trips. Ford is positioning the E-Transit as the workhorse of the future, and we have trouble poking holes in that argument.

BYD

BYD: BUILD YOUR DREAMS

The BYD Atto 3 is the first offering to the Irish market from this giant automaker.

G

lobally renowned Chinese auto maker BYD, the world’s leading manufacturer of new energy vehicles and power batteries (whose name stands for ‘Build Your Dreams’), has introduced a new brand and new technology to the Irish market with the arrival of their all-new, all-electric BYD ATTO 3 C-segment SUV. BYD is a giant at home in China, but it’s early days for its expansion into other regions like Europe and obviously Ireland. For those wondering if BYD is legit, the company is the world’s biggest seller of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids. With sales of 1.86 million cars in 2022. The Shenzhen based automaker stopped producing combustion engine vehicles last April. Using in-house batteries and a bespoke EV platform BYD has expansion plans. Motor Distributors Limited (MDL) will import and distribute BYD’s vehicles in Ireland. Available initially through dealerships in Dublin and Cork – with additional dealerships to be announced shortly – the BYD ATTO 3 can be viewed in Dublin at BYD North Dublin on Navan Road and at BYD South Dublin in Deansgrange. In Cork, models can be viewed at BYD Cork at Eastgate Business Park, Little Island.

40

www.motorsireland.ie

Designed by renowned German auto designer, Wolfgang Egger, the eye-catchingly elegant BYD ATTO 3 is styled with European customers in mind. With its distinctive sloping silhouette, it is expressive from every angle. Equipped with exceptionally high levels of standard equipment, including a Panoramic Sunroof, BYD’s attention to detail can be seen throughout, extending to its unique interior to give the ATTO 3 an added dimension of youthful flair and personality. The ATTO 3 range consists of three model variants: Models with ‘Comfort’ and ‘Design’ trim levels followed by an ‘Active’ model variant – all part of the Phase One scheduling of BYD’s launch into the Irish market. Taking account of its high level of standard specification, its many innovative features, and its extensive range of high-tech elements, the ATTO 3 is introduced at what its distributor says is ‘an appealingly-competitive price level’ beginning from €37,128. Active is priced from €37,128, Comfort from €37,596 and €38,964. Overall interior build and material quality is very good, with few signs of obvious cost-cutting.

There are padded surfaces on the doors and along the dash. The centre tunnel, unusual pull-back circular door handles, and console lid feel very sturdy. Even those cylindrical lower vents click and clack into place decisively. The power-adjustable and heated seats which are operated through the touchscreen are trimmed in good quality, soft, and perforated synthetic leather trim coloured blue and cream with red piping. In place of a traditional instrument cluster is a 5.0-inch screen perched atop the column which I found perfectly legible. It shows your speed digitally, remaining range, tyre pressures, current power usage or rate of recuperation, lane-assist function, and active cruise control settings. Moving down to the centre tunnel, there’s a gear shifter that looks to be inspired by a plane’s thrust lever. Behind this is a stylish starter button, knurled roller dial for audio volume, and a bank of Audi-aping, sturdy buttons assisted by rocker switches. Functions able to be controlled or adjusted here include the parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, Auto Hold, air-conditioning on/off, windscreen de-fogger, accelerator and steering weight modes, and the degree of brake-energy recuperation. The real standout feature in here is the Android-backed touchscreen, which measures 12.8 inches and offered fantastic clarity and quick processing of inputs with almost no lag. As a party trick, it also spins 90-degrees with a button on the wheel, so you can view

maps in portrait. I was pleasantly surprised at how resolved this first BYD offering felt. This promises to be a bit of a game changer in the sub-Tesla EV market, with a good price point and supply lines that are expected to actually support demand levels. The steering wheel adjusts for rake and reach, and is trimmed in blue leather. There are simple buttons on each spoke for active cruise control functions and audio controls, with a fun little roller ball for volume controls. The driving position is good and delivery is smooth and instantaneous, as are all EVs, although urgent take-offs in which you stab the throttle might elicit a bit of front wheel spin. The Atto 3 uses conventional MacPherson strut front, and multi-link independent rear suspension, and it’s tuned to be very soft and pliant, offering decent levels of isolation from expansion joints and potholes. On the negative front, the handling or body control feels a little unwieldy with noticeable body movement in corners. Respectively smooth and refined but if you want something that feels agile in corners this falls a bit short. The official zero to 100km/h time is 7.3 seconds, which is fairly impressive. There are two levels of brake-energy recuperation, but the difference between the two levels is hard to pick up, and there’s no one-pedal driving option. The degree of refinement is quite impressive, with minor wind noise from the side mirrors the only thing that

41

BYD

really breaks up the serenity. Considering the WLTP claim is 420km, this is perfectly reasonable. Those who are yet to experience the smooth power delivery and overall refinement of an EV really should go for a test drive. For daily commuting it’s preferable every time. Thanks to BYD’s commitment to safer driving, the ATTO 3 has a comprehensive suite of standard safety and driver assistance equipment. In Euro NCAP Safety Tests, it secured a Five-Star Rating, achieving a score 91% for adult occupant protection and 89% for child occupant protection. Safety features in all BYD models include: Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, Rear Collision Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Brake, Lane Keep Assistance, Lane Change Assist, and Emergency Lane Keep. Further driver aids include Blind Spot Detection System, Electronic Stability Program, Electronic Brake Distribution, Electric Parking Brake, Antilock Braking System, Automatic Vehicle Hold, Traction Control, Hill Decent Control, Traffic Sign Recognition, Intelligent Speed Limit Information, and Intelligent Speed Limit Control.

BYD ATTO 3 has a reassuring (WLTP combined) electric range of 420kms, with energy consumption as low as 6.40kms/ kWh (WLTP), and 16.3kWh/100km or less. Charging power is 11 kW AC 3 (Comfort and Design). High performance is also achieved when it comes to recharging. With a 150KW DC charger, the battery can be replenished from (SOC) 30% to 80% in just 29 minutes. Overnight charging from an almost empty battery to full range can be completed in just 6.5 hours. BYD ATTO 3 (all three trims) is also equipped with an auxiliary function whereby external devices can easily be charged by the car battery. The BYD Atto also comes with a comprehensive warranty package, starting with four years/120,000km for the car itself, eight years/150,000km for the drive unit, eight years/200,000km for the battery and 12 years (with no mileage limit) for the bodywork.

Conclusion

The BYD Atto 3 is a well-engineered EV, with decent range for the price, excellent refinement, ample punch, a spacious and well-made interior, and excellent technologies culminating in the sharp and rapid touchscreen.

T

ORA FUNKY CAT he Ora Funky Cat has hit the Irish market and showrooms in Ireland. Dublin dealerships include Linders, BlackWater Motors and Connollys where the Ora Funky Cat is available for test drives. New dealer locations in Cork and Galway will be available before the end of the year.

The Great Wall Motors (GWM) Ora Funky Cat looks like a cute little city car, but it is, in fact, more of a compact model: 4235 mm long, 1603 mm wide and 1825 mm high, with a smallish 211-litre load bay. Those dimensions make it roughly the same size as a Volkswagen T-Cross! If you’re comparing like-for-like, the Ora is bigger than its natural rival, the MINI Cooper SE. The rear styling is quirky and funky, a great talking point. I’m not sure if the photos do the Ora Funky Cat justice. It’s a far bigger car than I expected and, courtesy of its dedicated electric-car platform, it has superior interior packaging to a similarly sized car with an internal-combustion engine. There’s a plush, modern and upmarket feel to the cabin. The seats are trimmed in diamond-stitched leather and faux suede – a classy touch, even if some of the plastics are not as good as I’d like. All in all, fit-and-finish is great. I was immediately impressed with its head and shoulder room, as well as its spacious rear. I’m a little over 6 feet tall and was able to sit comfortably behind the driver’s seat that had been set up for my driving position so this is a genuinely family-friendly compact hatchback. There’s a pleasant minimalist feel to the infotainment system, which has a crisp, clear display. Thanks to its simple and uncluttered menu layout, its user experience feels similar to that of a high-end smartphone. The Funky Cat is available with two different battery sizes. The range kicks off with the 48 kWh 300 PRO (priced from €31,995) with a range of 310 kilometres (WLTP). The price rises to €39,995 for the 63 kWh 400 PRO+ with a range of 420 kilometres (WLTP). The new Funky Cat can charge up to 11kW (AC) and up to 67kW (DC). A standard CCS port comes as standard for all Funky Cats sold in Ireland. The Ora Funky Cat goes on sale priced from €31,995 including grants for the 300 PRO version with a 48 kWh battery and 310 km (WLTP) of range. It’s exceptionally well-equipped with lots of high-tech interior features, safety equipment, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The 400 PRO+ version is available from €39,995 with a 63kWh battery and 420 km (WLTP) of range. So what do you get for your money. The 300PRO comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, rear parking sensors and a reversing camera, as well as 360-degree cameras, keyless entry and starting, electrically adjustable front seats with synthetic leather trim, climate control and a pair of 10.25inch digital dashboard displays with navigation. There will be Irish Maps added via a free-of-charge Over-the-Air Update this year. There’s also wireless phone charging. The 400PRO+ adds a panoramic opening sunroof, privacy 46

glass, a heated steering wheel, powered tailgate, front parking sensors and park assist, while the front seats are heated, ventilated and have a massage function. Safety equipment is identical on both models, with a full suite of kit on offer. Auto LED headlights are included, plus lane assist and centring, blind-spot detection, adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist and rear cross-traffic alert. There’s also a driver monitor system that warns if it detects tiredness or distraction while you’re at the wheel. All of this helped the Funky Cat earn a five-star rating with Euro NCAP, so any doubts about the car’s safety can be put to rest. Commenting about the safety performance of Ora Funky Cat, Euro NCAP commented: “Several manufacturers are showing that Chinese brands can now compete on safety with well-established European brands. In the Small Family Car category, the ORA Funky Cat is exceptionally well equipped and, being at the top of its class, outperformed several familiar brands.” The Ora Funky Cat is impressive on the road. Power is sent to a 170hp motor on the front axle with 250Nm of torque, and is powered by a 63kWh battery. The Funky

Cat hits 100km/h in 8.5 seconds en route to a top speed of 160km/h. Drive a bit more reserved and you might get somewhere close to the claimed 420km EV range. Great Wall Motors has invested heavily in driver assist technology for the Ora brand and the result is that this car has 12 ultrasonic radar sensors and multiple exterior cameras that together provide for level 2.5 semi-autonomous driving. The steering could be a bit quicker and more responsive, but I appreciated that the steering needed very little effort, which is ideal for city driving. One-pedal driving is available via a sub-menu in

the main touchscreen but during my test I drove the Ora Funky Cat with a traditional throttle and brake set up. Conclusion The Ora Funky Cat is undeniably charismatic and is a welcome addition to the electric car market in Ireland. It’s competitive in terms of pricing and spec. It’s time to sit up and take notice of the Chinese car industry. If you can see past the funny name the Ora Funky Cat is an extremely credible EV. 47

A little over a decade after the Leaf was first introduced, Nissan has introduced their second EV offering in the form of an electric crossover SUV, the all-new Nissan Ariya.

B

uilt on an all-new Alliance-developed platform (Alliance being Nissan, Renault and Mitsubishi), the model’s 100% electric vehicle platform has removed conventional design limitations and allowed designers to take new approaches to exterior and interior design. Dimensions wise, the Ariya is 4,595 mm in length, 1,850 mm in width and 1,655mm in height, placed roughly between Qashqai and the X-trail in size. The exterior has a clean and elegant design which Nissan calls “Timeless Japanese Futurism”. The profile of the vehicle appears long, with uninterrupted panels and a low, sleek roofline. The front end of the vehicle is shorter, with the windshield pushed forward to lower drag. A single, uninterrupted horizon line stretches across the side profile, linking the front fascia and the rear. As you move inside, you see inviting seats that are actually quite comfortable and are heated. A massive screen greets you that runs well into the passenger side. In front of the driver is the gauge cluster, which can be configured anyway you wish and will give you all the range information, which is important with EVs. In the centre is your screen for the sound system, navigation, Bluetooth, settings, and how you set up Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Underneath the screen are buttons for the climate control system built into the dash. Nice touch and easy to operate. The centre console is actually quite interesting. It slides forward and backwards with a switch. There are controls on it for the automatic parking system, drive modes and e-Step-which is one-pedal driving. The front infotainment and drivers display consist of two 12.3inch screens laid out horizontally (similar to Mercedes) plus an HUD offering various display options. Two battery options are available, a 63kWh battery that delivers a range of 403 kilometres and an 87 kWh battery that offers a range of up to 532 kilometres, making the no compromise Ariya perfect for both daily commutes and longer road trips. The car is available in two grade options, Advance and Evolve. The 63kWh Nissan Ariya Advance is the entry grade model and starts at €48,995 (inclusive of Government grants) with the higher spec Evolve grade in the same 63kWh battery option priced from €51,995 (inclusive of Government grants). Pricing for the larger 87kWh battery in the entry Advance grade specification starts at €63,995 (no grants available) with the higher spec Evolve grade 87 kWh option coming in from €66,995 (no grants available).

49

NISSAN ARIYA “The pricing that we have achieved is extremely competitive for a car of this quality. The spacious design, advanced technology within the car and overall premium feel once you sit into it are what customers are talking about above all else. This is the EV they have been waiting for and our pricing and grade options allow them to make the switch to electric driving without compromise,” said Seamus Morgan, Managing Director of Nissan Ireland. The new Ariya is the most technically advanced Nissan to date. It has been specially designed to meet the needs of tech-savvy customers and to be a partner in an increasingly connected world, offering seamless, personal assistance and responses. The entry grade Advance specification is packed full of standard features that are usually reserved for higher grade options such as Wireless Apple Carplay, cabled Android Auto, a wireless phone charger and Intelligent personal assistance technology. Nissan’s Safety Shield System also comes as standard in the Advance grade, including Intelligent 360° Around View Monitor, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, Intelligent Driver Alertness, Intelligent Cruise Control and Lane Intervention, Intelligent Emergency Braking (Pedestrian & Cyclist Detection, Junction Assist), Rear Emergency Braking and cross traffic alert technology. Other standard features include ProPilot with Navi-Link, Dual 12.3” TFT screens with Navi display, Nissan Connected Services, USB Type-A & Type-C (front and rear) and e-Pedal, which allows drivers to launch, accelerate and decelerate using only the accelerator. Customers choosing to buy either the 63 kWh or 87 kWh Nissan Ariya entry Advance grade can also choose to add a number of options to the car such as a Tech Pack in-

50

www.motorsireland.ie

cluding Intelligent Rear-view Mirror, a Heads Up Display and Bose 10-speaker sound system (€1,900), a panoramic sunroof (€1,500) or 20” alloy wheels (€950). The Tech Pack and sunroof are standard features on the Evolve models along with PVC/Synthetic suede seats, Adaptive LED Driving Beams, ProPILOT Park, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, power memory 8-way front seats, and a power sliding centre console. Available extras on the Evolve grade include Full Nappa Leather (€1,500) and 20” alloy wheels (€950). With the Ariya, drivers get access to 242 horsepower and 300Nm of torque. For an SUV with a large, heavy battery pack at its centre, that doesn’t sound like a lot. But, consider that the torque is instant, available as soon as your foot touches the accelerator. The horsepower ensures that the SUV easily keeps speed. Despite its immediate power, passengers are ushered forward, not thrust off the line, with minimal strain passed onto the body. This doesn’t mean it’s not quick. This means that the Ariya is a more comfortable drive experience. Add into that the fantastic drive dynamics the Ariya offers and it’s easy to find it compelling. The model is able to turn efficiently making it easy to navigate in tight spaces despite its size, and has an engaging amount of feedback from the wheel.

Conclusion

With its competitive pricing, above-par appointments and comfort, and sharp driving dynamics, the Ariya has a lot to offer.

CITROËN C5 X

T

his new Citroen C5 X is a high-riding, front-wheel drive vehicle that’s said to combine the best aspects of a Saloon, an Estate and an SUV. Tired of driving around in a SUV? Well if the answer is yes then you could be in luck. Despite those vehicles being very strong sellers, Citroen has determined there are enough people out there desiring to break away from the trend. The C5 X delivers an emphasis on comfort and design, yet also stands out as being proudly unconventional in several respects, notably the design. It uses a hydraulic cushion suspension set-up, as per the Aircross, to deliver a ride that aims to overcome all obstacles, potholes, kerbs, speed bumps and other road connections. The Citroen C5 X starts from €42,370, and there are three trim levels to choose from: Feel Pack €42,370, Flair €44,330 and Flair Pack €47,270. All versions get a decent level of standard equipment, with the Feel Pack featuring 19-inch alloys, an acoustic windscreen for noise reduction, front and rear parking sensors and a top-down camera view when reversing, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and starting, automatic LED headlights with high beam assist, auto wipers and heated mirrors with integrated indicators. The interior includes some premium materials, including wood inserts across the dashboard fascia and extending into the doors. There’s a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system, including navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a DAB radio and voice control, wireless smartphone charging and two USB sockets, one up front, one for the back seats. The climate controls are on a 10-inch cluster below. The driver also gets a seven-inch digital instrument display.

CITROËN C5 X

All versions of the C5 X feature Citroen’s Advanced Comfort suspension as mentioned before, which sees progressive hydraulic cushions added to the dampers. Move up from Feel Pack to a Flair model for around €2,000 extra and you get 19-inch diamond-cut alloys plus a black contrast roof. Inside, there’s a 12-inch panel for the climate controls, a head-up display for the driver, twice as many USB sockets and LED ambient lighting, while safety is boosted by adaptive cruise control with traffic jam and lane assist, rear cross traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring. The Flair Pack model is around €3,000 more than Flair trim. It looks identical to the Flair model, but adds extra acoustic glass for even greater refinement, a 360-degree camera system, electric driver’s seat adjustment and a powered tailgate. Comfort and ride quality are front and centre. I was expecting a lot of understeer thanks to its soft ride and relatively skinny high-profile tyres, but aside from a dash of body roll, the big Citroen displayed decent balance and grip. That was even in the face of a lot of surface water after heavy rainfall and some back roads I took home to avoid heavy traffic on the first day of my test drive. Show it a good or even reasonable road surface and it excels. It floats over imperfections, cabin insulation is superb at city speeds and mattress-like seats make for a relaxing cruise. Speed bumps and urban streets proved a stern test for the fancy suspension but it handled it with ease. The engine’s no firecracker either, but it suits the touring style nature of the C5 X. Decent torque shove arrives from

54

www.motorsireland.ie

just past idle, and response is good. Don’t expect things to happen quickly if you stomp on the throttle while gently cruising. Sport mode holds gears longer, sharpens throttle response and adds weight to the light steering. Use this on a country road and there’s enough power to enjoy. There are three powertrain options available in the C5 X, all of which come with front-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard. Kicking off the range is Citroen’s 130hp 1.2 PureTech three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. This is available with all three trims, but the higher-powered 180hp 1.6 turbocharged four-cylinder petrol option is only available in Flair and Flair Pack models. The third engine choice is Citroen’s plug-in hybrid set-up, as found in the C5 Aircross SUV, although here it’s tuned for a total output of 225hp. The system comprises a 1.6-litre petrol engine and an electric motor that’s powered by a 13.2kWh battery. This offers a range of up to 63km on electricity alone. Like the 1.2 PureTech engine, this set-up is available with every trim level. Safety equipment includes active braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection and driver tiredness alert, though the C5 X didn’t get an exceptional score when tested by the Euro NCAP - achieving four out of five stars overall. Adult and child occupant ratings were good, but it fell down in terms of ‘Safety Assist’ (66 per cent) because of the “marginal” reaction of the autonomous emergency braking system to other vehicles.

Conclusion

Interestingly styled, a roomy and comfy tech-packed cabin and it’s one of the most relaxing cars you’ll ever drive.

PORSCHE 718 SPYDER RS

P

orsche crowns the 718 mid-engined model line with a sports car designed for maximum driving pleasure: the new 718 Spyder RS is the open-top counterpart to the 718 Cayman GT4 RS.

The powertrain of the new 718 Spyder RS is identical to that of the 718 Cayman GT4 RS coupe. The six-cylinder boxer engine, with its cylinder displacement of 4.0 litres, revs up to 9,000 rpm and generates an output of 368 kW (500 PS) and maximum torque of 450 Newton metres. Combined with a short-ratio seven-speed PDK transmission, the six-cylinder engine catapults the two-seater roadster from 0-100 km/h in 3.4 seconds. The car hits the 200-km/h mark in just 10.9 seconds. Compared to the 718 Spyder without the ‘RS’ designation, the new range-topper not only benefits from an additional 59 kW (80 PS), but also accelerates to 100 km/h half a second faster. The top speed is now 308 km/h instead of 300 km/h. Like every modern RS model, the new 718 Spyder RS is available exclusively with the Porsche dual clutch transmission (PDK). This gearbox shifts through its seven gears at lightning speed and guarantees maximum performance. The gearshift paddles allow drivers to keep their hands on

56

www.motorsireland.ie

the steering wheel even when shifting gears manually. Alternatively, the driver can use the ergonomically designed selector lever on the centre console. In addition to the more powerful engine, the new model’s lower weight also contributes to better performance: at 1,410 kilograms, the Spyder RS weighs 40 kg less than the 718 Spyder with PDK and is actually five kilograms lighter than the closed 718 Cayman GT4 RS. The Spyder RS represents the latest high-water mark of the model line started in 2016. The front end of the new Porsche 718 Spyder RS is almost identical to the front end of the 718 Cayman GT4 RS. The standard front bonnet is made of CFRP and features a wide air outlet above the bumper. The two NACA ducts enhance brake cooling without adversely affecting the Cd value. Sideblades on the outer ends of the bumper increase downforce. The front spoiler lip is slightly shorter than on the 718 Cayman GT4 RS, which in conjunction with its large rear wing produces higher overall downforce on the Cayman and therefore requires a larger spoiler lip to achieve aerodynamic balance. Instead of a wing, the 718 Spyder RS features a striking tear-off edge shaped like a ducktail. All aerodynamic components are intricately coordinated. They maintain the car’s aerodynamic balance and ensure maximum driving stability at high speeds.

718 SPYDER RS

Thirty years after the presentation of the Boxster concept car, Porsche is launching the most powerful version yet of the popular mid-engined roadster: the new Porsche 718 Spyder RS. For the first time, the high-revving naturally aspirated engine from the 911 GT3 is being deployed in an opentopped mid-engined sports car.

57

PORSCHE 718 SPYDER RS

The new 718 Spyder RS comes with a manually operated single-layer lightweight soft-top. The design is amazingly compact, consisting of two parts: a sun sail and a weather deflector. Both are completely removable and can be stowed together or singly in the vehicle. The sun sail alone can also be used as a ‘Bimini top’, thereby protecting the driver and front passenger from intense sunlight. In this case, the passenger compartment remains largely open to the side and behind the passengers. Together with

58

www.motorsireland.ie

the weather deflector, this creates a complete top that provides effective protection against rain when the side windows are raised. The entire roof, including mechanical parts, weighs just 18.3 kg. That’s 7.6 kg less than the 718 Spyder and 16.5 kg less than in the 718 Boxster. Drivers who wish to shave an additional eight kilograms from the weight of the vehicle can leave the top at home entirely, weather allowing.

A sporty character defines the inside of the car too: the interior is reduced to the functional and ergonomic essentials. The grippy RS sports steering wheel is covered with Race-Tex and features a yellow 12-o’clock marking. The standard full bucket seats are made of lightweight CFRP in a carbon-weave finish and offer particularly impressive lateral support. The seat covers are made of black leather, while the perforated Race-Tex seat centre features a

contrasting colour with a black background. The contrasting colours are Arctic Grey or Carmine Red. A ‘Spyder RS’ logo in the corresponding colour is embroidered on the headrests. The dashboard and trims are covered with leather. Available exterior colours include four plain and three metallic paints, including the new Vanadium Grey Metallic as well as the special colours Arctic Grey, Shark Blue and Ruby Star Neo.

59

PORSCHE 718 SPYDER RS

A Weissach Package is also available for the Spyder RS as an option. The exceptionally lightweight, optional forged magnesium wheels can be ordered in combination with this particularly performance-focused equipment package. The sports exhaust system tailpipes here are made of titanium. The look is inspired by the limited-edition 935 from 2018. A visual highlight inside the car is the upper part of the dashboard covered with anti-glare Race-Tex. Exclusively available to buyers of the Porsche 718 Spyder RS is a Porsche Design Timepieces handcrafted chronograph – a premium-quality watch from Porsche’s in-house watchmaking operation in Solothurn, Switzerland. Designed to match the configuration of the car, the particularly lightweight case is made of titanium, the dial is made of carbon and the strap is made out of vehicle leather. The rotor on the back echoes the respective wheel rim design on the 718 Spyder RS. “The 718 Spyder RS raises driving pleasure to a new level for open-top cars,” says Andreas Preuninger, Head of GT Cars. “The combination of our unmistakable GT3 engine, the close-ratio transmission, compact dimensions, low weight, road-optimised racing suspension and maximum openness offers an extremely compelling and unfiltered driving experience.”

MG4

he MG4 is something of a breath of fresh air for MG, being the first car to be built on an all-new platform. It feels like a distinct step up from the current MG line-up, a car that’s truly innovative. Its battery, laid on the floor of the car, measures only 110 mm in height - which is ultra thin compared to the competition. This allows for more room in the interior. The MG4 sports a unique hatchback/MPV look with an extra long wheelbase (2705 mm), a design that keeps on surprising with fantastic attention to detail such as an active front aero system. The large MG badge is hard to miss right at the front. A pair of very thin headlights are at the front end, which is shaped to direct airflow around the car efficiently without having to feed airflow to a traditional car engine’s radiator. It’s not as clean and smooth as a Tesla Model 3, but there is an unmistakable EV vibe about the MG4. The rear end of the car has three air spoilers, with a split pair of spoilers on the trailing edge of the roof and a full-width one with the taillights integrated, below the rear window. On the inside the design follows the trend for an open and minimalist layout. There is a small digital instrument cluster for the driver and a large touchscreen comes as standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connection. The twospoke steering wheel has a nicely judged heft, there’s plenty of space for storage between the front seats, and the clean, uncluttered dashboard with rotary drive selector knob is a component that is as good as anything from other EV manufacturers. The MG4 Excite is available with a choice of 51kWh battery (350km WLTP range) or 64kWh (450km WLTP range). The MG4 Exclusive is available with the 64kWh battery only and can drive electric for a range of up to 435km (WLTP). The MG4 64kWh allows DC fast charging up to 135kW and it takes 9 hours to charge the battery from a 7kW wallbox. It takes 60 minutes to charge from 10% to 80% from a 50kw charger. Using a 135kw charger you can charge 10% to 80% in 35 minutes. The MG4 Excite 51kWh Standard Range is priced from €29,495. The MG4 Excite 64kWh Long Range is priced from €32,995 and the MG4 Exclusive 64kWh Long Range is priced from €36,495. The Excite Trim Standard Range comes with 350km range as mentioned above. It comes with MG Pilot, 10.25” Colour Touchscreen, 7” Full Digital Driver Information Display, iSmart, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Rear Parking Sensors and Low Mounted Spolier. The Excite Long Range has 450km and includes the above along with Active Grille System (AGS), which regulates air flow to improve aerodynamic efficiency. The Exclusive Long Range has 435km and adds High Mounted Twin Spoiler, Satellite Navigation, Wireless Phone Char-

MG4 ging, Heated Front Seats, Leather Style Seats and 360 Parking Camera. The drive certainly lived up to the great first impressions I had of this car. The MG4 delivers an impressive driving experience. It handles daily drives with typical EV ease, but also seems to cater as a drivers car like few cars in this market do well. As with a lot of EV’s there’s no physical start button but setting off is as simple as getting in and pressing the brake pedal to select drive. The drive is silent in an urban town setting with throttle response entirely lag-free and with variable regeneration braking levels allowing something close to one-pedal operation when it is turned up to the max, although the MG 4 won’t actually come to a full stop without brake input. It’s very easy to work with the regenerative braking, useful both for topping up the battery and making smooth progress from corner to corner if on country back roads. table and manageable at this speed. Steering is precise and there is good feedback. Ride quality is quite good, with the MG 4’s suspension on the firm side of comfortable. Overall I was pleasantly surprised by the MG4. Quality is high and this is also evident in how much equipment MG has packed into the car, with all active/passive safety systems you can think of coming as standard under the umbrella of MG Pilot. It also has the coveted Euro NCAP 5 star crash rating.

Conclusion

There’s a lot to like with the MG4. The car gives very ample power yet doesn’t have a punishingly high battery consumption figure which is very important. It has a good range even in the standard Excite model and it comes with good tech and safety. It also drives really well. I wasn’t sure what to expect from the MG4 but I was pleasantly surprised. Well worth a test drive.
