from the

W

elcome to the new issue of Motors Ireland. For our cover car this issue we have the beautiful Bentley Flying Spur Hybrid. The Flying Spur Hybrid has arrived to bolster Bentley’s eco credentials before they convert to full electric by 2030. Superformed aluminium panels create sharper, smoother lines everywhere, starting with the face. A much wider grille re-establishes proportions up front, as well as a corporate look that goes its own way from the Continental. Vertical vanes in the grille channel the 1957 Bentley S1 Continen- tal Flying Spur, and sit just ahead of a gloss black matrix mesh. The lower grille comes in gloss black matrix as well, but can be specced in bright chrome. The LED matrix headlamps have been fitted with chrome sleeves in order to glimmer even when the lights are off. The powertrain combines a 2.9-litre V6 petrol engine with an advanced electric motor, delivering a total of 536 bhp (544 PS) and 750 Nm (553 lb.ft) of torque. The Flying Spur becomes the most efficient Bentley to date, covering over 700 km when fully fuelled. You can read the full review on starting on page ten. The Polestar 2 is a pure electric car with four doors and a faintly raised ride height and we were delighted to get to test it for this issue. It’s definitely not an SUV but it is taller than, for instance, a Volvo S60 saloon. The Polestar 2 is handsome. Despite the raised ride, it’s a fairly squat and square looking machine, with just enough road presence to get noticed without veering into the aggressive. The squarish shape is broken up by a few sharper lines around the grille and lights - which feature a familiar Thor’s Hammer motif - and the tailgate features a full-width light bar that adds some drama. However, the design doesn’t feel overly complicated or showy - something in common with its Volvo relatives. In Ireland, the Polestar 2 model range includes three versions, offering a mix of performance and range. Another electric vehicle we tested in this issue is the Škoda Enyak. Škoda’s first all-electric model takes the shape of an elegant SUV. It comes in the form of the Enyaq iV 60, Enyaq iV 80, Enyak iV 80x 4x4, Enyak iV 60 Sportline, Enyak iV 80 Sport-

line and iV 80x 4x4 Sportline. – with different battery capacities and WLTP range. At the front of the vehicle, the Enyak has a sporty, muscular stance where the bonnet has a bit of flair thanks to dividers at the centre and sides. The headlights are supremely stylish. Using a unique crystal structure, the headand sidelights are dazzling providing a classy look to the vehicle. A large-sized covered front grille dominates the vehicle’s frontal design. Elsewhere, the aggressively styled air ducts that reside on either side of the front bumper, provide the EV with a sporty stance. Around the back, the Enyaq iV has a subdued design with rounded edges, sleek-looking tail lights, a nicely styled rear bumper and a small spoiler. Please flick forward to read the full review. In this issue we have a full lineup of Irish reviews including the Bentley Flying Spur Hybrid on our cover, the Polestar 2, Jeep Compass, Toyota Hilux Invincible, Volvo XC60 Recharge, Volkswagen Taigo, Škoda Enyak iV and the thrilling Audi RS 3. Our gimme 5 section has some great new cars hitting the market and we have all the latest car releases in our news section. Hope you enjoy the read!

NEW VOLKSWAGEN AMAROK

he second-generation Amarok is gearing up for launch. Propelled by powerful, efficient turbocharged engines and featuring a versatile 4MOTION all-wheel drive system, this multi-tool on wheels is the “can-do” pick up for any occasion. More than 830,000 first generation Amaroks were sold but the new model builds on a successful formula thanks to the addition of more than 25 assistance systems, infotainment displays measuring up to 12.3in, and high-quality materials throughout.

T

The new generation Amarok is available with a range of 4- and 6-cylinder diesel engines. The range starts with a 168HP version of the 2.0-litre TDI powerunit (available in entry-level Amarok and Life) trims. Stepping up to the Style model increases the output of the 2.0 TDI engine to 202HP and adds a 10-speed automatic transmission (optional in Life trim, standard in Style models onwards). Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ acclaimed six-cylinder, 3-litre TDI powerplant, the refined V6 that gave pick-ups mainstream appeal in Ireland, is available in Style, PanAmerica and Aventura models. Power has increased to 237HP, making light work of heavy loads, while power is channelled through a new 10-speed automatic transmission.

8

www.motorsireland.ie

Thanks to a payload of up to 1.19 tonnes, a 3.5 tonne towing capacity and a cleverly thought-out cargo box, the new Amarok handles every conceivable work and leisure activity with ease. With its new drive, assist and control systems, the typical robustness of a pick-up and its highly flexibly cargo box, the charismatic, second generation Amarok is ideal as an ultra-modern tool for professionals. In Ireland, the Amarok comes with all-wheel drive (4MOTION) as standard. Depending on specification, up to 25 assistance systems make driving safer and even more effortless. Assistance features include automatic cruise control system, a parking assistant, 360-degree all-round view (‘Area View’), lane change assistant and road sign recognition. Commenting on the all-new Amarok, Alan Bateson, Director of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Ireland, said: “The first generation Amarok was a vehicle that challenged preconceptions and brought pick-ups into the mainstream. It’s a hard act to follow but, having driven the new, second generation Amarok at the International Media Drive in Capetown, South Africa, I am delighted to report it is even better in almost every department. Versatile, robust and with an unmatched on-road presence, the new Amarok is going to be a huge hit with the Irish motoring public.”

I

am in Belfast to drive the all-new, third-generation Bentley Flying Spur. Taking pride of place is the retracting, illuminated Flying B hood ornament. The Flying B mascot that adorns the bonnet is available for the first time on a modern-day Flying Spur. The large grand tourer also brings a new platform with a longer wheelbase, a new design, more technology, and fluted leather and wood finery. The same MSB architecture that serves the Continental GT is used here. A wheelbase stretched by 5.1 inches over the previous Flying Spur delivers handling benefits and attends especially to the comfort of rear-seat passengers. Superformed aluminium panels create sharper, smoother lines everywhere, starting with the face. A much wider grille re-establishes proportions up front, as well as a corporate look that goes its own way from the Continental. Vertical vanes in the grille channel the 1957 Bentley S1 Continental Flying Spur, and sit just ahead of a gloss black matrix mesh. The lower grille comes in gloss black matrix as well, but can be specced in bright chrome. The LED matrix headlamps have been fitted with chrome sleeves in order to glimmer even when the lights are off. A prominent crease emphasises the shoulders and haunches. Beneath that, the front wing vents adopt a larger and more obvious “B” shape signature, the lower doors accented by a chrome strip running between the wheel arches. Those arches will be filled with either the standard 21inch wheels, or two new 22-inch wheels on optioned with Mulliner Specification. The PHEV has only tiny external changes, including the inevitable Hybrid badges. At the rear, wrap-around taillights take on the illuminated “B” graphic to complete the look. Standard paint options for the Flying Spur extend to a class-leading portfolio of 17 Bentley colours, carefully selected to complement the character and lines of the car. The Flying Spur Hybrid is the most environmentally-friendly Bentley ever. The electrified, four-door Grand Tourer also emphasises the company’s commitment to its ground-breaking Beyond100 strategy – achieving end-to-end carbon neutrality as the world’s leading, sustainable luxury mobility brand.

Hybridisation of the iconic Flying Spur does not compromise luxury or performance but only adds to its already outstanding abilities. With an unperceivable blend of internal combustion engine and electric motor, refined serenity is always on offer, regardless of driving mode or style.

11

BENTLEY FLYING SPUR

“The Flying Spur Hybrid is the most environmentally-friendly Bentley ever.”

With high power reserves, superior torque and quick throttle response, the Hybrid model gives little away to the Flying Spur V8 in acceleration, passing 100 km/h from a standstill in 4.3 seconds. The new powertrain also achieves a significant reduction in fuel consumption, whilst still providing the authentic Bentley character of effortless, refined performance. The result is much sportier handling than you might expect from something this large and heavy. Mind you, Bentley has always done heavy cars and found ways to make them handle well. The output of the V6 isn’t quite as monumental as what 12

www.motorsireland.ie

the 12-cylinder version offers and the hybrid can sound like it is working a lot harder. Nonetheless, it remains a seriously quick car, particularly when one considers it’s two tonne plus ultra-luxury limousine. The main advantage of this hybrid system is that this Spur will drive about 40 kilometres purely on electricity which is enough for the average commute. The overall range – petrol and electricity as mentioned above is 700 km, though that’s really down to how you drive it. Nonetheless, the combined range and the ability to refuel quickly and keep going is cited by Bentley among the reasons the brand has gone hybrid and not fully electric. Still, an EV is coming in the next few years, presumably when Bentley can produce a comparable driving range for such a big luxury saloon vehicle running solely on batteries. In the meantime, the PHEV lets you choose how you get about: purely on electricity, in hybrid mode or ‘Hold’, whi-

ch stores up your electrical power for later use. To provide further feedback to the driver, the driver instruments show when the car is operating solely in EV drive, regenerating whilst deaccelerating, or using the combustion engine. Inside the cabin, the automatic Start-Stop switch has been replaced with a control for the three E Modes – EV Drive, Hybrid Mode and Hold Mode, enabling the driver to manage the battery usage during a journey. EV Drive mode is engaged as soon as the car is switched on, and maximises the electric driving experience. This is ideal for city driving and for shorter journeys. The flow of energy can also be displayed via the infotainment screen, where the timers for charging of the vehicle can be set. Additional e-motion information is available to the driver via the instrument panel, head up display and centre screen. This includes range, battery level and charging information. Inside is a beautiful, luxurious rear cabin, with enormous legroom. Everything is highly customisable of course but does come at a price so expect the base price to rise considerably as you add various options.

The interior of the Flying Spur showcases Bentley’s expertise in creating a modern, innovative cabin of unrivalled luxury. Stylish and unique, the car features supremely comfortable seats in 15 hide colours, with Bentley’s iconic ‘Wing’ theme across the lower console and fascia. The Flying Spur incorporates a class-leading portfolio of intelligent and intuitive equipment tailored to the driver and passengers. For the Flying Spur Hybrid, connected car services will now also include My Battery Charge, My Car Statistics, and My Cabin Comfort. Activate Lights and Horn helps the customer locate their parked Flying Spur, in situations such as a large parking lot, or at night time. Personal Navigation Assistant also enables them to contact a call centre and conduct points of interest search of the immediate area and beyond. Packages of options also make it easier to commission collections of features together. City Specification includes Hands Free Boot Opening, Pedestrian Warning, Reverse

13

BENTLEY FLYING SPUR

Traffic Warning and Automatic Dimming Mirrors. Touring Specification offers Lane Assist, Night Vision, Head-Up Display, Adaptive Cruise Control (with Traffic Jam Assist) and Bentley Safeguard Plus, with Emergency Lane Change Assist and Intersection Assist. Located in front of the driver, the Digital Instrument Display introduces new graphics, for a more elegant bias befitting the nature of the Flying Spur. The display is fully configurable, with ‘Classic’ and ‘Expanded’ views. A large, 12.3-inch HD touchscreen in the centre of the dashboard can also be configured in a number of different ways – as a single display, split 2:1 or showing three different functions at the same time – and was designed with simplicity and ease of use in mind. Drivers will also appreciate the benefits of safety systems like Traffic Assist, City Assist, blind spot warning, night vision, a heads up display, top view camera, and self-parking capabilities.

Conclusion Those who can afford a Flying Spur Hybrid are probably not too concerned about its pricing however the Hybrid significantly reduces VRT and road tax here in the republic

14

www.motorsireland.ie

and while the average buyer on principle can afford the larger engine options I think many will opt not to throw away their hard earned money and be swayed by this offering. It has plenty of power, supreme Bentley refinement and plenty of modern tech. It was a pleasure to drive and a big thanks must go to Bentley Charles Hurst in Belfast.

THE KIA EV9 REVEALED

K

ia has revealed full images of the exterior and interior design of the Kia EV9, its first three-row electric flagship SUV, which encapsulates bold styling and sophisticated elegance inside and out. The Kia EV9 represents a pivotal step forward in the company’s journey towards becoming a sustainable mobility solutions provider. The bold and confident visual presence of the EV9 is inspired by Kia’s ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy, which harnesses the creative tension generated by the divergent values of nature and modernity to deliver a harmonious whole. Kia’s designers have fused a unique combination of sleek, sculptural shapes and assured, assertive geometry to deliver a strikingly contemporary yet gracefully serene SUV. The front of the EV9 is denoted by simple clear-cut lines and body surfaces, which exude confidence, clarity and calmness in equal measure. Built on Kia’s Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the EV9’s long wheelbase, low beltline, and completely flat electric vehicle architecture have facilitated the creation of generous space

for all occupants to connect and relax with lounge-style comfort in all three rows of seats. Offered in both six and seven-seat formats, Kia captured feedback from families to evaluate seating configurations and features to ensure the EV9 delivers equality of space, comfort and experience for all occupants without placing all of its focus on the driver. Occupants sitting in the first and second-row seats can simultaneously recline their seats to relax and rest when the EV9 is charging. The seats in the second row can be effortlessly swiveled 180 degrees so that occupants can interact with those sitting in the third row. The third-row seats also offer cup holders and charging points for mobile devices. Throughout the spacious, light, airy cabin, the EV9 embodies an elegantly simple, premium quality, exceptionally user-friendly design. The open, floating panoramic dashboard extends from the steering wheel to the vehicle’s centre. Two 12.3-inch touch screens integrated with one 5-inch segment display improve the digital experience, offering effortless control of the vehicle’s functions and ensuring physical buttons are kept to a minimum. 19

T

he Bentley Batur has begun real-world road trials across Europe. Following its debut at Monterey Car Week in August 2022 and attendance at numerous events for Bentley Customers, global media and the public, two development Baturs are now starting a rigorous programme of tests to ensure the highest standards of vehicle performance and quality. The limited series of just 18 examples are due to begin deliveries mid-2023 after completion and sign-off of an extensive engineering program. The Batur will also be the most powerful Bentley yet, with a 729+ Bhp (740+ PS) version of the iconic, hand-assembled 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged W12 engine that has metaphorically and literally powered Bentley’s success for the last two decades. Over 100+ weeks of powertrain development have already been completed to confirm the new air intake system, modified turbochargers, revised intercoolers and new calibrations for the engine gearbox and electronic stability control for the pinnacle W12. As the engine enters its twilight years as part of Bentley’s Beyond100 transformation journey to being fully electrified, the Batur forms the first part of a celebration of the W12’s extraordinary power, torque and refinement. Engine performance will be matched to the most advanced Bentley chassis ever, with Speed-tuned air suspension, electric active anti-roll control, eLSD, four-wheel steering and torque vectoring. Batur Car #0 All 18 customer Baturs are already reserved. Each one is being designed collaboratively with each customer, guided by Mulliner’s in-house design team. Customers will be able to specify the colour and finish of practically every surface of the Batur, to create a car as individual as they are. From the main exterior paint to the surface finish of the air vents, and literally everything in between, each customer will specify even the tiniest of details. The engineering development car – Batur Car #0 – has had the same level of attention to detail as a customer’s own specification. The exterior paintwork is a bespoke colour – Purple Sector – that provides a deep vibrant colour across the curvaceous surfaces. The bodywork is underscored by front splitters, side skirts and rear diffuser in a high gloss natural fibre finish. The front of the car features a grille of exceptional art – with the main matrix finished in Gloss Dark Titanium, accented with contrast chevrons in a horizontal ombré pattern that flows from Purple Sector in the centre and gradually darken to the sides to Black Crystal. The “endless bonnet” line is finished in Satin Titanium paint, as are the 22” wheels – with the spokes in Gloss and Satin Black Crystal to match the grille. One small addition customers will not receive that can be seen on Batur Car #0 are the small white arrowheads found at the edges of the body panels. These markers help to provide feedback on panel movement and any form of relaxation whilst the car is undertaking the durability testing.

HYUNDAI N VISION 74 CONCEPT

H

yundai’s thrilling N Vision 74 hydrogen fuel cell hybrid concept made its U.S. debut at Automobility LA three months ago. This futuristic concept reveals the Hyundai N sub-brand electrification vision, demonstrating its commitment to zero-emissions technologies. The ‘Rolling Lab’ concept on which it is based is a testbed of future technologies seeking the highest level of emotional involvement for the driver. This strategic approach allows the N brand to experiment with the most advanced technologies from both motorsport and production car development. Launched in 2015, N brand’s vision and commitment for sustainable performance is demonstrated in the hydrogen-powered N 2025 Vision Gran Turismo. Although hydrogen fuel cell power was initially regarded as a dream, the N Vision 74 represents seven years of technological development and the N brand commitment to deliver an optimistic future for car enthusiasts, regardless of propulsion type. By using the pinnacle of Hyundai’s state-of-the-art

22

www.motorsireland.ie

technology, design, and high performance, N Brand is spurring innovation for the entire company. N Vision 74 pays homage to the Hyundai Pony Coupe concept from 1974, developed by legendary car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. N Vision 74 inherited the pure surfaces, the dynamic-proportioned profile, and the unique B-pillar from the 1974 Pony Coupe concept, while Parametric Pixel lighting provides a futuristic flourish. It’s made up from the hydrogen fuel-cell system similar to what’s found in Hyundai’s Nexo fuel-cell SUV, combined with two rear-mounted electric motors and a 62.4kWh battery pack. Its projected numbers are reason enough to be interested, with a 661bhp peak power figure, 664lb ft of torque and a 950 km range. The critical element its hydrogen fuel-cell brings to the package is an ability to be quickly and easily topped up from a liquid hydrogen fuel station, rather than a time-consuming charging process.

POLESTAR 2 The Polestar 2 is all about sustainability, power, performance, and style.

POLESTAR 2

T

he Polestar 2 is a pure-electric car with four doors and a faintly raised ride height. “Polestar 2 is a very attractive, powerful car with an avant-garde, modern design that really stands out and our customers are very passionate about it,” says Polestar CEO, Thomas Ingenlath. “It is that perfect combination of key attributes when it comes to the pleasure of driving, the joy and the fun of it – the emotional aspect.” In Ireland, the Polestar 2 model range includes three versions, offering a mix of performance and range. The Standard range Single motor version will feature a 231 hp / 330 Nm electric motor and a 69 kWh battery pack good for a WLTP range of up to 474 km and a 0-100 km/h in 7.4 seconds, while the Long range Single motor will increase battery size to 78 kWh with a corresponding jump in its WLTP range of up to 542 km and a 0-100 km/h in 7.4 seconds. The Long range Dual motor variant has two electric motors and the same 78 kWh battery, with a total output of 408 hp and 660 Nm, with a WLTP range of up to 482 km and 0-100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. Irish pricing for the Polestar 2 starts at €51,135 while the Long Range, Dual Motor model tested here is €63,850. Standard equipment is generous, with an Android-based infotainment system

controlled via a large 11.5-inch digital display. This incorporates Google functions such as Maps, the Play Store and Google Assistant, while over-theair updates and an integrated sim card mean the car is always connected. Other standard kit includes auto-activating LED lights and rain-sensing windscreen wipers, two-zone climate control with preconditioning, a reversing camera and 19-inch alloy wheels. Our test car came with Metallic paint option at €1,070 and the plus pack price at €4,269. Polestar 2 was the first car in the world to feature Google built-in. The Android Automotive OS infotainment system provides a solid and adaptable digital environment for apps and vehicle functions to coexist and brought embedded Google services to a car for the first time – including the Google Assistant, Google Maps with support for electric vehicles and the Google Play Store. Natural voice control and an 11-inch touch screen display bring the new interface to life. Since the Polestar 2 shares its platform with the Volvo XC40, it will come as no surprise to learn that it has a similarly high level of safety equipment. Eight airbags, whiplash protection front seats and tyre pressure monitors are all included, while the Safety Assistance package is standard and includes collision avoidance, run-off road mitigation, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, road sign and driver alert and lane assist. All cars also come with the Pilot Pack, which includes adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, Pilot Assist (which helps with acceleration, braking and steering), 360-degree cameras, blind-spot detection and Pixel LED headlights with active beam-bending. This standard kit list applies to all models, because the extra cost of the Dual Motor model pays for the additional power and larger battery. There are optional packs that can be added, though. As well as the Plus Pack mentioned earlier, there’s a

Performance Pack for the Long Range, Dual Motor model. This replaces the 19-inch wheels with 20-inch items fitted with Continental SportContact 6 tyres, plus Brembo brakes with gold calipers and manually adjustable Öhlins dampers, which increase traction and responsiveness. With an approachable yet dignified interior, the Polestar 2 maintains a premium feel, especially with optional wood finishes. The upgraded vegan interior, called WeaveTech, is breathable and the seats are firm and easily adjustable. The €4,815 Plus Pack which our test car had, added heated seats and steering wheel, premium sound system by Harmon Kardon and a full length panoramic glass roof, interior high level illumination and wireless mobile phone charging. With the Plus additions, the full-length panoramic roof opens the space and makes the cabin more airy. Polestar 2 has effortless style, solid build quality and user friendliness of the Scandinavian brand. That feeling of familiarity is as clear on the outside as it is on the inside, where anyone who’s driven a Volvo recently will recognise elements of the trim and switchgear. The Polestar 2 seems perfectly suited as a daily drive, especially since it is quite practical. The standard power-operated front seats are fantastic and the soundproofing is brilliant. The interior space is large enough for four adults. You can store small items in the frunk, the 3-litre compartment in the nose and the bulkier ones in the conventional boot, which can take 405 litres of stuff and is easily accessible thanks to the electrically operated, wide opening tailgate. There’s not even a start-stop button: just pull the hexagonal gear selector in D and you’re off. When you want to park up, you engage P, hit the electric Parking brake and step out. Stop and go

30

acceleration is where this Polestar excels. It is fast off the mark. You will be first off the line at any traffic light. It is also fun. Press the accelerator and you’ll have built up a gap of over a car length with the car that was beside you. Out on the open road, you get a sense of calm while driving the Polestar 2. You can play the radio at lower levels and still hear everything quite easily such is quietness in the cabin. Steering feel is good and is light to use. Conclusion I enjoyed driving the Polestar 2. If I were in the market for an electric vehicle, this Polestar 2 would be one I’d seriously consider. I like the solid looks and how well it’s put together. The interior is somewhere you would feel comfortable on a daily basis and you can feel the quality. Depending on the specific spec you choose you should have more than enough power or range for those longer trips.

JEEP COMPASS

he Jeep Compass has an updated look featuring a modern design with a lot of the changes mainly to the front, with a more muscular and sporty appearance giving it a great on-road presence. Designers have revamped the look of the legendary Jeep grille, raising its vertical position and dividing it into two horizontal sections. It integrates new full LED headlights featuring a thinner, sleek profile which is standard across the range. The daytime running lights have also been repositioned and are now built into the main headlights. Overall it looks very well. The Jeep Compass range starts from €43,995, but interestingly there are two powertrain options at this price - a 130hp 1.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine (with a manual gearbox) or a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol e-Hybrid with the same power output - but connected to a seven-speed automatic. The 4xe plug-in hybrid is available from Limited trim and above, retailing from €49,995. The top of the range Trailhawk trim level is available as the 4xe plug-in hybrid only and retails from €53,495. Jeep has tweaked the suspension and steering which has contributed to a more direct steering feel and improved ride compared to the outgoing model. Wind noise is well controlled leading to a fairly quiet cabin experience. The overall driving experience wouldn’t be as engaging as I’d like but i think for most doing there daily commute it would be acceptable. I do however think the Jeep offers some genuine off-road capabilities. Now before you go try buy one to do some crazy off road stuff let’s put it into perspective. This will serve you well in light mud, snow and hill descents but it may come up short in tougher terrain so manage your expectations obviously but great to have a vehicle than can genuinely manage some difficult road conditions. The new Jeep Compass is now offered in four trim levels (Night Eagle, Limited, S and Trailhawk). Customers can also choose from two different powertrain combinations and two configurations – front- or four-wheel drive; and various body colour combinations, from one to two-tone in combination with a black roof (depending on the model). The colour palette includes Alpine White, Glacier, Jetset Blue, Blue Shade, Sting Grey, Colorado Red, Carbon Black and Solid Black, Three-layer Ivory, Blue Italia and Techno Green. More specifically, the Night Eagle is the entry-level version and features, as standard, front and rear parking sensors, a 10.1-inch infotainment system with wireless smartphone integration, new 10.25-inch full digital instrument cluster and 18-inch alloy wheels. The Limited trim offers standard Adaptive Cruise Control, exclusive 18-inch alloy wheels, front and side parking sensors with automatic parking function, Keyless Enter & Go and Nappa leather-wrapped dashboard. Higher levels of refinement and specification come standard on the S version – the top of the range trim adds body-colour front bumpers and fascias, 19-inch alloy wheels, a new

JEEP COMPASS hands-free power tailgate and leather seats that can be electrically adjusted to eight different positions. The line-up is completed by the Trailhawk trim – the off-road specialist with Trail-Rated 4x4 capability, which stands out for its muscular, bold appearance and offers specific equipment for off-road driving. It comes with high-performance suspension and benchmark off-road angles and figures: approach angle of 30.4 degrees, departure angle of 33.3 degrees, breakover angle of 20.9 degrees and ground clearance of 21.3 cm. Standard on Trailhawk is also the five-mode Selec-Terrain traction control system, which includes a specific Rock mode, exclusively available on this model. Finally, by choosing the new Jeep Compass, customers receive access to the benefits of Jeep Wave, the new loyalty and customer care programme offering Jeep owners a wide range of services and benefits, including maintenance, roadside assistance, dedicated customer services and privileged access to branded events and partnerships. When you first get into the Jeep Compass, you are met by a spacious and open cabin with comfortable and supportive leather seats. All of the main touch points are good and feel like quality components, apart from the indicator stalks which felt a little clunky and cheap. The large 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen is one of the true highlights of the Jeep Compass, and is well organised around Jeep’s uconnect 5 system, and works well in terms of functions, however I did find myself searching

34

www.motorsireland.ie

for basic functions like the heated steering wheel that was located as a small symbol on the far side of the screen, away from the driver’s seat which didn’t make much sense. An integrated TomTom navigation boasts a natural language interface with advanced voice recognition, so drivers can talk to the car to control its settings, program the air conditioning and choose favourite music. This feature is integrated into vehicles with TomTom navigation and can be activated hands-free with the wake word “Hey Jeep!”. The new Compass offers level 2 autonomous driving and is equipped with the latest generation ADAS, as standard across the range. These include: Traffic Sign Recognition, which reads and interprets the road signs; Intelligent Speed Assist, to automatically keep the car within the speed limit advertised; Drowsy Driver Alert, to alert the drivers when their attention falters or if they drop off for a moment; Automatic Emergency Braking with pedestrian and cyclist recognition, which slows the vehicle down to a complete stop, to avoid or mitigate accidents that could occur.

Conclusion

The Jeep Compass Limited is a surprisingly practical and comfortable small-size SUV. The Compass is well composed, and comes with plenty of technology and safety equipment. Taking advantage of the electric motor on a daily basis along with being something different than the norm makes this a worthy choice.

TOYOTA HILUX INVINCIBLE

S

ince 1968, Toyota’s shifted more than 18 million of these Hilux workhorses to everyone from farmers to power line workers. It’s a Dakar Rally winner too. The Toyota Hilux is one of the most famous names in the pick-up world, and it’s earned this fame for being tough and reliable even in the harshest conditions around the globe. The Double Cab version we drove came in Oxide Bronze paint. The Double Cab brings the option to use it for work and family life at the same time. This latest version features improved comfort and tech along with more power available in the 2.8l offering which we drove. For this model year, the Hilux has a new 2.8-litre diesel engine with an increase of 54 hp and an extra 100 Nm of torque. Smart phone integration is now standard. There have been suspension improvements for better on-road comfort and handling, and improved off-roading with lower engine idle and a new auto limited slip differential. More basic versions of the Hilux use a 2.4-litre diesel engine with manual transmission - with single cab from €32,060 and double cab from €39,105. The Invincible model we drove came with 18” alloy wheels, heated seats, LED headlights and fog lights along with side steps. As a pick-up truck and a commercial vehicle, the Hilux’s most important trait is how much it can carry and pull. The Hilux’s load bay length varies from 1,525mm in the double cab model to 2,315mm in the single cab. That’s pretty much on a par with rivals, but it’s width where the Hilux has made great strides. The load area on all models is a full 130mm wider than before. Our Hilux as mentioned was powered with Toyota’s 2.8L turbodiesel engine, producing 204hp of power and 500Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. This combination allows for a tow rating of 3500kg braked, 750kg unbraked, which is consistent for the entire diesel Hilux range and our invincible test model had a 1 tonne payload. It also wouldn’t be a Hilux without a list of off-roading goodies. The new range includes a Rear Differential Lock, Rear Auto Limited Slip Differential, Down-hill Assist Control and an Automatic Disconnecting Front Differential, plus the usual gearing ratios of 2H – 4H and 4L controlled via switch knob. The driving experience is edging closer to that of an SUV, and the interior goes some way to matching a family SUV. If you haven’t sat in Double Cab Toyota Hilux I can assure you it is a considerably less rough and ready place to be than older pick-up models you might remember from your youth. The design, layout and material finish is of real upmarket quality. It feels well-built and is a comfortable place to be, with this Invincible model getting leather seats/front heated, parking sensors, automatic air conditioning and 8” touchscreen. In the Double Cab model I drove, the Toyota Hilux’s cabin is roomy enough for tall adults in the back. The engines use some advanced new tech to boost efficiency and performance, and I’d be very confident this new Toyota Hilux will be as reliable long-term as the old-tech diesel units that came before it. The new engine is brilliant,

with noticeably improved refinement and a better torque delivery at the low end of the rev range. This pick-up handles main roads and back roads with potholes and imperfections very well aided by a clever ‘Pitch and Bounce Control’ system that automatically adjusts engine torque to suit the road surface. With a height of 60mm off the ground and a larger approach angle, the Toyota Hilux can handle rocky surfaces with ease. There is also Hill Descent Control, an electronic system that helps prevent the Hilux from skidding when descending a steep hill, so that muddy, uneven hills aren’t too difficult. In general, once you’re on the go, you’ll find the Toyota Hilux relatively easy to drive. The controls are very light and the six-speed automatic gearbox is smooth and easy to use. It runs well in traffic and when cruising motorways.

38

www.motorsireland.ie

Our Hilux came equipped with 7 airbags, plus Toyota’s Safety Sense (TSS) package. This includes Pre-Collision System with Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Alert with Yaw Assist and Vehicle Sway Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control and Road Sign Assist. Other safety items include Drive Start Control, Trailer Sway Control, Vehicle Stability Control, Emergency Stop Signal and a Reverse Camera.

Conclusion

The Toyota Hilux Invincible offers a premium, capable, and practical pick-up that is not only good for off-roading and navigating through difficult terrains, but is as good if used as a daily commuter. It will no doubt keep buyers happy with its long-term reliability and ownership experience.

LAMBORGHINI

THE BEATING HEART OF LAMBORGHINI

T

A history of the naturally aspirated V12 before hybridization.

he naturally aspirated V12 engine has been at the heart of Lamborghini’s most prestigious product lines since 1963; in fact, to date just two designs have been produced for the super sports cars. The first, essentially a racing engine that was made more “civilised” for road use, was designed by Giotto Bizzarrini. It made its debut in the first Lamborghini, the 350 GT. The second engine, designed from scratch but with the main technical concepts unchanged, was introduced in the Aventador[1] which was launched in 2011. This was a significant technological step forward for the company, setting new standards in terms of power and reliability. The first engine underwent a significant number of modifications and evolutions over its lifetime in order to deliver increased power, and later to considerably reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Between 1963 and 2010, the engine was used in different positions. At first it was front-mounted in the 350 GT, 400 GT and the Espada. It was developed using aluminum for the cylinder heads, crankcase and pistons to bring the weight down to 232 kg. The engine was then used in a rear mid-engine layout, rotated 90 degrees to a transverse orientation in the Miura. Subsequently it was rotated another 90 degrees to a longitudinal rear-mid position, starting with the Countach,

40

www.motorsireland.ie

to help balance weight distribution. As the size of the engine increased, from 3.5 liters in the 350 GT to 6.5 liters in the Murciélago, it became increasingly necessary to reduce the engine weight. To this end, new materials and new technologies were introduced to lower the engine in the chassis. Today, the V12 is the beating heart of Lamborghini’s Aventador, Sián, and Countach LPI 800-4, as well as the Essenza SCV12, the track-day car in which it produces 830 hp.

The start of a spectacular heritage

Since its inception, the V12 engine has been considered the most refined and prestigious of powerplants, even more so since they were mounted in Lamborghinis. Bizzarrini created a V12 that was meant to give the company a chance to enter the world of racing. Instead, Ferruccio Lamborghini elected to turn it into a production engine for his new model, and so began the love affair that continues to this day. “The Lamborghini story was born with the V12,” said Maurizio Reggiani, former Chief Technical Officer at Lamborghini. “It is clear that in the 1960s, the V12 represented the pinnacle of technology, luxury and sportiness of every car.”

After the 350 GT and its derivatives, the V12 was mounted into the Miura in 1966, the Countach in 1971, and the Diablo in 1990 before finding its final home in the Murciélago. The versatility of the engine was proven when engineers fitted a 5.2 liter version of the engine to the LM 002, Lamborghini’s first Super SUV, in 1986. A special one-of-a-kind version of the LM 002 was also made, featuring a 7.2-litre 700 hp V12 usually used on offshore racing powerboats.

A radical change of thinking

Thanks to the double overhead camshaft solution for each cylinder bank, a first for engines designed for production cars, the ‘V’ angle of the engine could be increased, which meant that the center of gravity could be lowered. For the Miura, the transverse rear mid-engine layout was chosen to achieve better weight distribution and to shorten the car’s wheelbase. The gearbox and differential casing were integrated into the powertrain, helping to make the overall assembly of this legendary super sports car more compact.

Weight distribution is key

With a view to further improving weight distribution for the Countach, the design team used the same engine but relocated it to mid-rear position and rotated it an additional 90 degrees, basically 180 degrees compared to the first 350 GT. They mounted the gearbox in front of the engine, practically “in the cockpit”. In its final iteration, the Countach’s engine capacity had increased to 5.2 liters. With the model year 1986, the V12 mounted in the Coun-

tach was also homologated in the U.S. market. This milestone was achieved using electronic fuel injection, which replaced carburetors in markets where anti-pollution regulations were more stringent. “With the increased capacity, the engine became longer, and that meant having to move the center of gravity toward the rear of the car,” said Reggiani. “This made it more difficult to drive, and you had more oversteering effect. The layout was revolutionized, using the engine to move the center of gravity. The Countach engine is really the first in a generation of engines that are still here today in terms of powertrain layout and position in the car.”

Meeting the demands of four-wheel-drive

Work started in 1985 on the development of the V12 in preparation for its use on the new super sports car, Diablo, which would debut in 1990 with the engine capacity increased to 5.7 liters and power delivery of 492 hp at 6800 rpm. In its VT version presented in 1993, the Diablo was the first Lamborghini super sports car to also be available in a four-wheel drive version. The Diablo SV-R, on the other hand, was created to race in the Super Sport Trophy, which debuted as a support race at the 1996 24 Hours of Le Mans. Thirty-two Diablo SV-Rs took part in what was Lamborghini’s largest ever racing program prior to the Super Trofeo championship inaugurated in 2009. The 1998 Diablo GT, essentially the first Diablo model to feature the styling elements of the second generation that would debut in 1999, brought further major technical up-

41

LAMBORGHINI

grades to the engine. Of particular note was the adoption of an individual throttle body for each cylinder, a choice dictated by the desire to improve the engine’s throttle response. This change was significant as well as futuristic, considering that similar technology is integrated into the new Huracán GT3 that will be racing in 2023.

New challenges with the advent of Murciélago

With Audi’s acquisition of a majority stake in Lamborghini, a period of sweeping change began. The new owners were aware of Lamborghini’s need to maintain its identity and exclusivity. “We were able to create a relationship between Audi and Lamborghini that set limits but also respected needs,” said Reggiani. “Right from the start, Audi understood what it could ask of Lamborghini and what it could not, creating a balance that allowed both companies to improve by promoting their differences. The specificity of Lamborghini, perceived by both the shareholders and the other brands in the group, has been one of the keys to our success. What we were able to demonstrate with the development of the V12 gave us the confidence that enabled us to fine-tune the V10 that debuted on the Gallardo and to develop all our other products in a distinctly Lamborghini way.” Under the new ownership, a different approach was taken to the evolution of the V12. From achieving high power output, the focus began to shift toward volumetric efficiency to meet the increasingly stringent regulations. One example is that of the Murciélago, which was unveiled in 2001 with a 6.2-liter V12 engine that produced 580 hp. It was updated in 2007 with capacity increased to 6.5 liters and was capable of generating an impressive 670 hp. Moreover, the car was 100 kg lighter and the engine, upgraded

42

www.motorsireland.ie

in several areas, was fitted with dry-sump lubrication with oil recirculation using scavenge pumps. This allowed Lamborghini to reduce the distance between the crankshaft and the bottom of the car, which led to improved handling. The development of the V12 engine for the Murciélago allowed Lamborghini to find its own place within the realm of Audi, but it was the decision to design a new V12 from scratch, after 45 years, that allowed Lamborghini’s designers to set new goals and take advantage of new opportunities.

Clean-sheet design for Aventador

With Audi’s acquisition of a majority stake in Lamborghini, a period of sweeping change began. The new owners were aware of Lamborghini’s need to maintain its identity and exclusivity. “We were able to create a relationship between Audi and Lamborghini that set limits but also respected needs,” said Reggiani. “Right from the start, Audi understood what it could ask of Lamborghini and what it could not, creating a balance that allowed both companies to improve by promoting their differences. You can choose from two equipment packs for the Plus and Ultimate models. These are called Bright and Dark, and are no-cost options. Bright comes with lots of exterior chrome, while Dark deletes all that for black trim. The XC60 Plug-in hybrid moves around in almost silence a lot of the time time. Even when the petrol engine does kick in it can be hard to detect unless you’re accelerating hard. The driving experience prioritises comfort over sportiness with soft suspension and a calm driving experience. The ace up the Volvo’s sleeve is its hybrid system. For long motorway journeys you have the benefit of petrol but on shorter trips, the plug-in hybrid can be spectacularly economical. If the battery is fully charged before you set off 46

you can travel for 77km on electric power. You may never need to use the petrol engine at all in day-to-day driving! So you really do have the best of both worlds. The XC60 Recharge’s cabin feels spacious and retains the Swedish brand’s smart, modern interior design language. All XC60s get a nine-inch portrait-orientated, tablet-style touchscreen infotainment system in the centre of the dashboard. It’s flanked by a pair of nice metal air vents, while the plastics and leather that line the rest of the interior mean that, when you factor in the hybrid technology as well, the car’s price tag starts to make sense. That display is joined by12.3-inch digital dials, which benefit from improved graphics. One drawback of the system is that the climate controls are integrated into the touchscreen. It’s a small point, and while it means the dashboard is free of buttons and clutter, you have to use the screen to adjust the temperature and fan speed. Thankfully, Volvo has fully embraced the Android Automotive operating system; many of the car’s basic functions like the heated seats, navigation and radio controls can be programmed using “Hey Google” voice commands. You also get steering-wheel controls that can manipulate the digital dashboard, but they also control radio presets and volume, as well as the adaptive cruise control. Volvo Cars has introduced a range of upgrades to the XC60, including the addition of the company’s new Android-powered infotainment system with Google apps services built-in, making the Volvo smarter than ever before. The intuitive next-generation infotainment system offers customers unprecedented personalisation and unparalleled connectivity, which is further enhanced through

the introduction of a brand-new Digital Services package. The centrepiece of the Digital Services package is access to Google apps ad services, which offers hands-free help with Google Assistant, best-in-class navigation through Google Maps, and a broad offer of native in-car apps via Google Play. Like all Volvo vehicles, this XC60 Plugin hybrid incorporates passive and active safety features starting with its very configuration. The body of the Volvo XC60 is designed for maximum strength around the passenger compartment and maximum energy dissipation in the front and rear crumple zones.

Conclusion Despite the decent level of power on offer, it still feels very much like a relaxed cruiser rather than a performance SUV. If you don’t stretch the 2.0-litre engine all the way to its maximum, it remains quiet and refined. Ride quality matches these traits with a generally smooth and controlled feel. The Volvo XC60 T6 Plug-in Hybrid is a premium SUV with strong appeal and this updated Recharge model brings improved plug-in hybrid tech to Volvo’s mid-size SUV. 47

VOLKSWAGEN

TAIGO

The Volkswagen Taigo boasts higher ground clearance, a roomy interior and a sleek body profile which hopes to fill a niche market for aspirational buyers. 48

www.motorsireland.ie

W

here does the Taigo fit in the Volkswagen lineup. Well between the T-Cross and T-Roc I would presume. It offers coupé styling together with SUV and hatchback looks. The Taigo is 150mm longer than the T-Cross but 37mm shorter than the T-Roc, with a ride height to match both. So while looking sportier it still benefits from a large 440 litre boot and decent cabin space. As well as the dramatic sloping roof line, Taigo also boasts a full-width rear light bar making it rugged yet contemporary. The cabin is airy and usable with a 2,556mm wheelbase, effectively a mere 5mm more than the T-Cross, and boot space can extend to 1,222 litres when the seats are folded up, which is enough for a family and among the more spacious in the niche. The interior uses soft-to-touch dashboard materials and it appeals to the senses in quite the same way as the new Polo R-Line that we tested recently. It’s the similar and comfy cloth-covered chairs with a diamond-pattern too, and a touch-operated media system with climate control and steering wheel-based controls. The new Volkswagen Taigo goes on sale priced from €28,995 and is available in three trim levels: Life, Style and R-Line. The Life comes with 16” Belmopan alloy, separate daytime running lights, body coloured bumpers, multi-colour digital cockpit, lane change assist, black roof rails and extended and predictive pedestrian/cyclist protection. Taigo Style (from €32,035) and R-Line (from €33,345) models look the best with silver roof rails and more stylish 17-inch alloy wheel designs, as well as the option of 18-inch. The Style comes with 17” Aberdeen alloys and a chrome package with instrument cluster bezels, vents, door handles and gear shift in chrome. You also get LED Matrix headlights with IQ.Light, travel assist and park distance control. The Taigo R-Line on test is the sportiest looking of them all with 17-inch ‘Valencia’ alloy wheels as standard, as well as sportier R-Line bumpers, rear privacy glass, pedals in brushed stainless steel, seat trim covers in fabric R-Line along with ambient lighting. Power comes from Volkswagen’s well-proven 1.0-litre TSI turbo petrol engine, which is available with 95hp (Life only) or 110hp. There’s the option of a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed DSG automatic. The Taigo is a great addition to the Volkswagen range, a good solid contender which is great to drive and cheap to run. Its moderate performance is sufficient in moving the model from stationary to mo-

49

VOLKSWAGEN TAIGO torway speeds although it won’t offer any mind blowing performance. Maximum torque is available from as little as 2000 rpm but momentary lag bogs instantaneous acceleration. The raspy three-cylinder quietens down at cruising speeds while a plush and comfortable ride devoid of wind-noise dominates the experience in the cabin – even on the 17-inch Valencia alloys on our R-Line test vehicle. Dynamics are excellent. The small sporty steering wheel is chunky and direct giving Taigo rapid responses, just what you need in small Irish towns and twisty stuff back roads. Ride is very comfortable, well damped and controlled and grip is excellent.

Conclusion

Taigo represents a stylish coupe crossover for Volkswagen with comfort, reasonable frugality, along with family space and practicality.

t the front of the vehicle, the Enyak has a sporty, muscular stance where the bonnet has a bit of flair thanks to dividers at the centre and sides. The headlights are supremely stylish. Using a unique crystal structure, the head- and sidelights are dazzling providing a classy look to the vehicle. The interior is slightly more of a step away from other Skodas. The flat floor and lack of transmission tunnel creates a spacious feeling cabin and there’s a simplicity about the controls and layout that feels pleasingly modern. Given the Enyaq iV’s size, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to learn that it offers excellent headroom and legroom, both at the front and rear of the cabin. The Enyaq is one of the few cars that can comfortably fit a family of five. There’s the obligatory large touch screen (13”), but Škoda has avoided eliminating physical controls completely, so even in the high-tech Enyaq you get actual buttons for key functions like climate and driver-assist settings which i really liked. There is a small 5.3” instrument panel, which is small but does the job and our test vehicle came with a head-up display which was fantastic. The Sportline seats are comfortable and plush, finished in cognac brown Microsuede/leather, and there’s a nice array of textures on the dashboard. Škoda’s first all-electric model takes the shape of an elegant SUV. It comes in the form of the Enyaq iV 60, Enyaq iV 80, Enyak iV 80x 4x4, Enyak iV 60 Sportline, Enyak iV 80 Sportline and iV 80x 4x4 Sportline. – with different battery capacities and WLTP range. The entry Enyaq iV 60 comes with a 58 kWh battery has a WLTP range of up to 397 km and 180 hp. The Enyaq iV 80 comes with a 77 kWh battery, WLTP range of up to 544 km and 204 hp. It’s priced from €44,369 for the iV 60 and €52,885 for the iV 80. The iV 80x 4x4 has a 77 kWh battery, 265 hp and a WLTP range of 521 km and is priced from €60,845. The iV 80x 4x4 Sportline that we tested had a 77 kWh battery, 265 hp, 511 WLTP range and pricing of €69,235. The Enyak iV 60/80/80x key equipment includes keyless start/stop, dual-zone air conditioning, cruise control including speed limiter, rear view camera, power folding mirrors, automatic rain and light sensors. Infotainment pack consists of 13” touchscreen display, navigation system, 2 x USB-C ports, 8 speakers along with Bluetooth and Voice control. You also get 19” Proteus alloys, LED headlights, tails lights and daytime running lights. Our 80x Sportline test car came with optional 21-inch ‘Betria’ wheels which cost €788, the driver assistance pack which includes radar-guided cruise control, a blind spot monitor and traffic-jam assistance for €1,182. The Škoda Enyaq is most at ease driving in town, thanks to it’s sporty design, its easier turning circle and excellent visibility. In towns or on potholed rural roads which are plentiful near my home, you’ll feel the bumps a little more due to the the firmer suspension that comes with a heavier electrical vehicle. It’s fantastic on the motorway. When going fast, it’s quiet and comfy and the Enyak iV 80x 4x4 Sportline that we tested had 265 hp and was capable of 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds so no shortage of power available. The Enyak handles extremely well around country roads. For a vehicle that weighs over 2,100kg there’s minimal body roll for a vehicle of its class and with a competent

54

driver’s feel, the SUV feels great to drive at speed. When it comes to traction our test vehicle came with AWD. There’s no slip or wheel spin when power is instantly required. Range is impressive at over 500km-plus meaning you can plan most road-trips without really stressing about charging during the day. The Enyaq can be charged at home from a wallbox (takes 9-13 hours with 7.2 kW wallbox, depending on model) or using the public charging network. 50 kW charging is possible (70 minutes to a full charge) with 100 kW and 125 kW available as an option. Standard safety kit on the Enyak iV 60/80/80x includes lane assist, front assist with an emergency braking function, driver and front passenger airbags, front side airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchor points, hill hold control, tyre pressure monitoring and turn assist. The Sportline versions feature additional on-board tech such as side assist blind monitoring, crew protect assist and driver alert. The Enyaq iV’s safety kit has been recognised by industry crash test body Euro NCAP, which awarded Škoda’s all-electric family SUV a full five-star rating. Adult and child occupant protection were rated at 94 per cent and 89 per cent respectively. Conclusion If you’re searching for a versatile SUV, the Skoda Enyaq is a good option. It excels at the fundamentals with plenty of room, great tech and over 500km of range.

FERRARI ROMA SPIDER

T

he Ferrari Roma Spider, the latest model from the Marnello marque, was presented to clients today at an exclusive event at the El Badi Palace in Marrakesh. This timelessly elegant, high-performance car is a contemporary take on the chic, pleasure-seeking Italian lifestyle of the 1950s and 60s. This spider carries over the proportions, volumes and specifications of the Ferrari Roma’s hugely successful V8 2+ concept, but what makes it so striking is the adoption of a soft top, a solution making a welcome return to the Prancing Horse range on a front-engined car 54 years after the 1969 365 GTS4. There’s a novel and modern take on the soft-top design that underlines the Ferrari Roma Spider’s exuberant character, with extensive personalisation options that include sophisticated, bespoke fabrics and contrasting stitching. On a functional level, the soft top deploys in just 13.5 seconds and can be actioned at up to 60 km/h. The fact that it is so compact also yields a larger boot and boosts the

56

www.motorsireland.ie

car’s versatility. A new, patented wind deflector integrated into the backrest of the rear bench can be deployed by a button on the central tunnel, guaranteeing exceptional in-car occupant comfort without taking up any space in the car. The Ferrari Roma Spider retains the Ferrari Roma’s excellent dynamic characteristics: it boasts a best- in-class weight/power ratio thanks not only to its soft top, but also to its all-aluminium chassis and 620 cv V8 from the engine family that was heralded as the International Engine of the Year on four consecutive occasions. The engine is coupled with Ferrari’s universally-acclaimed 8-speed DCT known for its incredibly fast shift times as well as excellent standards of comfort and mechanical efficiency. The Ferrari Roma Spider is not just rewardingly easy to drive, it is also extremely dynamic and responsive: this makes it the perfect companion on out-of-town weekends and longer journeys alike. Always, of course, with the exhilarating Ferrari V8 soundtrack playing in the background. A

ROMA SPIDER La Nuova Dolce Vita – A New Story Begins.

57

FERRARI ROMA SPIDER number of features are designed to make this car superbly versatile, including a category-topping boot size which includes a hatch via the rear seat backrests to allow larger items to be carried, and standard wireless connectivity by Android Auto® and Apple CarPlay® Wi-Fi. Not forgetting, of course, 18-way-adjustable heated ergonomic seats that are also available with an optional neck warmer for colder days. STYLE Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre headed by Flavio Manzoni, the Ferrari Roma Spider aims to move the “La Nuova Dolce Vita” concept beyond city limits for elegant, carefree driving ‘en plein air’. This 2+ spider boasts a sophisticated fabric soft top, which is designed not just to maintain, but to enhance the flawless proportions of the coupé on which it is based without modifying that car’s elegantly flowing silhouette. Redesigning the coupé’s tapering, fastback roofline meant modifying the rear screen to incorporate it into the soft top so that it can fold below the tonneau cover when open. On the Ferrari Roma Spider, the original styling theme has become a body-colour band running across the base of the roof that divides the carbon-fibre active spoiler from the roof and rear screen, creating a seamlessly integrated tonneau cover. When the soft top is lowered, the active spoiler visually connects with the rear bench and head rests. Unlike the more usual basic fabrics seen on most convertibles, a new material has been used for the Ferrari Roma Spider’s soft-top, giving it a sophisticated air. Special fabric weaves were selected and developed in colour combinations that highlight the car’s twin souls, one more elegant and the other sportier. The bespoke finish with two-tone weave draws on a palette of four colours highlighting the

58

www.motorsireland.ie

refined, haute couture nature of the fabric. The optional technical fabric developed specifically for this car gives it a sporty yet very sophisticated allure with an innovative weave creating an extremely striking iridescent red finish that further enhances the roof’s 3D surface. EXTERIOR The stylistic approach taken for the Ferrari Roma Spider’s exterior centres around a clean design and absolute symbiosis between its various elements. Its harmonious proportions and pure, elegant volumes are very much in line with Ferrari’s front-engined GT tradition. That said, the designers have created a modern take on those classic proportions, giving the car a sophisticated, contemporary stylishness. The long front bonnet underscores the spare silhouette of the flanks, lending a sense of sleekness to the entire body and a dynamic look. The sober, spare front of the car looks as if it were sculpted from single block of metal, creating an overhanging, sharknose effect. The bonnet and sinuous wings flow into one another yet also effortlessly harmonise with Ferrari’s traditional styling cues. The designers sought to preserve the minimalist elegance of the car’s forms by removing any vents or superfluous decorative features. In fact, the launch configuration does not even include the Scuderia Ferrari side shields, reflecting the approach taken with the road cars of the 1950s. Engine cooling is guaranteed by the perforated surfaces, only where strictly necessary, creating a new interpretation of the grille concept: this distinctive solution is finished in the same colour as the bodywork, rendering it seamless with the styling. The edges of the front grille flow into two linear, full- LED headlights which lend the front of the car a

distinctive character all of its own. They are traversed by a horizontal DRL strip that hints at the structure beneath the car’s skin, an element that brings a sense of tension to the entire circumference of the car.

all the way back to the rear seats, organically incorporating the dash, doors, rear bench and tunnel. Thus, the cabin is not designed as a collection of separate sub-assemblies, but defined by elements that develop organically.

The fastback cabin volume is compact and set back, ending in a subtle nolder beneath which the designers have created a modern take on the signature Ferrari tail. The Ferrari Roma Spider’s long rear overhang, which is a characteristic of the Ferraris of the 1950s and 60s, has been re-proportioned here, resulting in a low, compact volume which hugs the rear axle. The wraparound tail of the car is characterised by the purity and modernity of the transom styling. Technological advances made it possible to reduce the dimensions of the tail light assembly, resulting in a minimalist and iconic design. The rear is completed by a compact aerodynamic diffuser that incorporates the fence and exhaust tailpipes.

The technology adopted is derived from the Ferrari Roma: the digital instrument cluster is integrated with the volumes around it and protected by an anti-glare binnacle which extends out naturally from the dash. The passenger has an optional display that allows them to share the driving information. An 8.4” central display set between the two cockpits and partly floating between the dashboard and tunnel incorporates the other infotainment and climate control functions.

CABIN For the Ferrari Roma Spider’s cabin, the Ferrari Styling Centre designers took the same approach to volumes and forms introduced on the Ferrari Roma. Two separate spaces, one each for driver and passenger, were created in an evolution of the dual cockpit concept, which has its roots deep in the marque’s history with cars from the 1970s. The innovative look of this dual cockpit was achieved by extending the philosophy applied to the dash to the entire cabin. Hence, the vision of two modules that wrap around driver and passenger and that extend and integrate with the two rear seats. The Ferrari Roma Spider’s cabin has an almost symmetrical layout which produces a more organic distribution of both spaces and functional elements. The result is that the passenger will feel very involved in the driving experience – almost like a co-driver, in fact. The forms have been crafted to create a sculptural volume in which there is a sense of textural continuity between all the various cabin elements. Created by paring back the volumes and underscored by piping along their edges, the two cockpits are cocooned in a wraparound volume and extend from the dashboard

The F1 gearbox controls have been set into a modern metal plate which references the iconic gear lever gate. In the Ferrari Roma Spider, this is in the centre of the tunnel and inclined to make it easier for the driver to reach and see. The steering wheel’s HMI is a further honed and refined version of that seen on the Ferrari Roma with touch controls on its spokes. The left-hand spoke has indents corresponding to the touch controls to ensure the driver can feel which one to use. The track pad on the right-hand spoke has been improved – there is now an indent that makes it easier to swipe. These solutions help the driver know where the controls are, in line with the “Eyes on the road, hands on the wheel” philosophy Ferrari has been adopting for quite some time. The Engine Start button is now also backlit in red to underscore the thrill of the moment the iconic Ferrari twin-turbo springs to life. POWERTRAIN The Ferrari Roma Spider is powered by an engine belonging to the V8 turbo family named “International Engine of the Year” for four consecutive years and also voted “Best Engine of the Last 20 Years” in 2018. The 3,855 cc power unit can punch out 620 cv at 7,500 rpm, the equivalent of 161 cv/l, which it combines with the flexibility of low-end pick-up, thanks to 80% of the torque being available at just 1900 rpm. The Ferrari Roma Spider also sees the introduction of an important evolution of the oil pump which reduces ti-

59

FERRARI ROMA SPIDER

me-to-pressure in cold starts by 70%, as well as increasing the flow rate at medium revs. The same modification has also been introduced on the Ferrari Roma, demonstrating the company’s commitment to continual research and development. Like all Ferraris in the range, the Ferrari Roma Spider delivers instantaneous throttle response. This is the direct result of the adoption of specific solutions, such as a flat-plane crankshaft, which is more compact in size with lower rotating masses to improve fluid-dynamics; compact turbines which have a lower moment of inertia; twin-scroll technology that directs the exhaust gases from each cylinder through separate scrolls and increases the pressure of the exhaust pulses for maximum power; and a single-piece, cast exhaust manifold with equal length pipes to optimise pressure waves in the turbine and reduce losses. The Ferrari Roma Spider boasts Variable Boost Management, a control software developed by Ferrari that adjusts torque delivery to suit the gear selected, delivering increasingly powerful pick-up as revs rise, whilst optimising fuel consumption. As the car goes up through the gears, the amount of torque delivered by the engine increases, continuing all the way up to 760 Nm in 7th and 8th gear. This allowed the use of longer gear ratios in the higher gears, which helps keep fuel consumption and emissions down, while adopting a steeper torque curve through the rev range in the lower gears for a feeling of smooth, consistent pick-up. The gearbox is based on a dual-clutch oil bath architecture and is derived from the 8-speed gearbox first introduced on the SF90 Stradale. The main modifications made with respect to the latter are longer gear ratios and the introduction of a reverse gear. The new layout and com60

www.motorsireland.ie

ponent integration thus optimised the gearbox’s size and its installation in the car. With eight gears and optimum transmission efficiency, fuel consumption in urban and motorway contexts has been reduced without compromising on performance. In fact, there is a noticeable improvement even in sporty driving. The main technical features that have guaranteed this result are the use of low-viscosity oil and a dry sump configuration to minimise fluid-dynamic efficiency losses (oil splashing) in addition to the use of a specially-designed differential (with the input pinion axis not offset to reduce slip speed. The clutch module is 20% smaller than the previous 7-speed, but delivers 35% more torque, with up to a maximum 1,200 Nm of dynamic torque transmitted when gear shifting. The transmission software strategy has been evolved thanks to a more powerful ECU and better integration with the engine management software. Particular attention was also lavished on the strategies designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, particularly when the Start&Stop function is in use. Every single Ferrari engine has its own particular soundtrack that makes it unique and, of course, the Ferrari Roma Spider is no exception to that rule. In addition to the flat-plane crankshaft, which synchronises engine firing, and equal-length exhaust headers, which equalise the sound, the spider adopted the Ferrari Roma’s entire exhaust line that eliminated the two rear silencers in favour of new geometry for the by-pass valves. The continuous and progressive by-pass valve control underscores the engine sound and performance depending on the driving situation.

AUDI RS 3

he amazing new Audi RS 3 needs no introduction. Powered by Audi’s glorious inline five-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, which dates back to the legendary Audi Quattro Sport S1 Group B rally car of the mid-1980s, the high-performance hot hatch is legendary. With electrification on the way this may well be one of the last RS 3’s you see with a purely combustion engine. The RS 3 revels in being driven hard. It sounds fantastic, looks mean and still functions in the real world so what’s not to like. First thing you notice is Audi’s high-performance RS 3 has a menacing front end with a large black honeycomb grille, large wheel arches hiding 19-inch wheels on low-profile tyres and a pair of oval exhausts at either side of the rear bumper. The design is purposeful and, when accompanied to my test car’s Tangor Red paint it looks immense. The RS 3’s colours are wide and varied with colour options such as Kyalami Green, Turbo Blue, and Python Yellow showing a fun side to this car but be in no doubt the RS 3 means business once you tap that right pedal. Functional vents in the flared wings up front are a subtle homage to the Quattro S1 E2 used in Group B rally racing, while bigger air intakes, a wider front track, and more aggressive aero elements give the new RS 3 a far more purposeful look than its predecessor. Audi also included a small touch that adds to the sense of occasion by way of the Matrix-design LED headlights, which greet you by spelling out R-S-3 each time the car is unlocked. I only noticed it on my last few days with the car and it’s such a smart touch. While built for going fast, the RS 3 does give up little in the name of comfort as you’d expect from Audi. The ride quality, even with 19-inch wheels and low profile tyres is predictable and poised, with enough steering isolation to keep the RS3 manageable on rough roads. You can’t talk about Audi RS 3 without referencing its five cylinder engine. There’s something very appealing about the way this engine revs. The surprisingly loud noise from the twin oval exhaust outlets complete with a new valve to increase resonance and volume adds greatly to the experience. The RS 3 has a great handle on the noise and unless a sportier drive mode is active, the turbocharged 2.5-litre keeps relatively quiet. The most impressive piece of technology hidden beneath the Audi RS 3 is the heavily-upgraded quattro all-wheel drive powertrain, which makes the biggest difference to the way the new Audi RS 3 can be driven. The previous car’s system is replaced by a Magna-sourced rear ‘diff’ that employs electronically controlled clutches on both the left and right drive shafts. Audi calls it the ‘RS torque splitter’ and it can distribute up to 100 per cent of the engine’s torque to either rear wheel, making the car feel more like a rear-driver without understeer – something that hampered its predecessor during hard cornering. The front sport seats are excellent, with wide and ample support. A thigh extension provides plenty of support for longer-legged drivers, too. Legroom in the second row is tight but you could fit two adults at a squeeze. Boot space is not great at 282 litres, although it expands to 1104 litres and is

AUDI RS 3 sufficient for a couple of suitcases or a decent load of groceries but I suspect most buyers won’t be judging the RS 3 based on what’s at the rear regarding space as they are far more concerned about what’s under the bonnet. The interior of the RS 3 is a special place to be. You have power-adjustable and heated sports seats, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch central touch-screen. The 10.1-inch touch display in the instrument panel displays the coolant, engine, and transmission oil temperatures, as well as the g-forces and, optionally, the pressure of the tyres. There is a lot of carbon fibre trim in the instrument panel and gorgeous RS sport seats with RS embossing and stitching. A 15-speaker Bang & Olufsen

Conclusion

The RS 3 has astonishing pace and a fantastic engine. It combines huge grip and more of a driver focus than previous generations. It’s also brilliant to live with day-to-day. On the down side it’s expensive to buy and run. If you can afford it then the RS 3 is the one to have but if happy not having the RS badge the Audi S3 is certainly worth a look and comes with over 300hp and is €30,000 cheaper.
