Tindal Park is being sold.

The Greenville County School Board on Tuesday voted to sell 2.81 acres at 37 Tindal Ave. to New Focus Builders LLC for $1.5 million.

The property once was the site of Donaldson Elementary School, where Albert Einstein once visited to speak to fifthgraders. The school was closed in 1971 and the school district has leased the land to the City of Greenville for $1 per year for a city park for decades. A former school district annex building next to the park was vacated in 2010.

“I don’t think we could have found a better buyer,” Trustee Derek Lewis said after the meeting.

New Focus Builders LLC is registered under Joseph Satterfield, according to the South Carolina Secretary of State’s office. Satterfield is a partner with Rick Quinn in Quinn Satterfield Builders, one of eight approved builders for Verdae, a 1,100-acre master-planned neighborhood bordered by Laurens Avenue, Woodruff Road and Verdae Boulevard.

Quinn could not be reached for comment before press time.

In the public comment portion of the meeting, two people made a last-ditch effort to get the board to keep the park and sell only a portion of the land.

“It’s a sad day for the park and it’s a sad day for lovers of green space,” said Gina Smith.

Superintendent Burke Royster said the district received no offers for the park from the city, county or any recreationrelated entity.

“Save Tindal Park” signs started appearing in the neighborhood off Church Street south of downtown last spring after word got out that the school district was taking sealed bids on the property. The district rejected the one bid received – for about

$900,000 – because it was too low.

An effort by some neighborhood residents to get Tindal Avenue designated as a city historic preservation overlay district failed last month when the city Planning Commission board voted against it.

Overlay districts have special development guidelines designed to preserve the character of historic neighborhoods. One Planning Commission member said the decision might have been different if the area was truly historic and the designation sought as such instead of for keeping something from happening.

The New Focus Builders offer was the only offer made since, Royster said, and it was higher than the most recent appraised value.

The contract allows for a 180-day due diligence period, Royster said.

The property is included in the city’s Haynie-Sirrine Neighborhood Master Plan that allows only single-family homes or duplexes no more than 2 ½ stories tall. If the buyer wants to do something other than what is allowed under the master plan, it would have to get a variance from the city, Royster said.

“That’s the time for public input,” he said.

Royster said the district plans to disassemble the metal building on the site and will use money from the sale to pay for capital projects at the district’s career centers.

Hollywild seeks community support, donations

Schools face off in mock trial competition

Plagued by a barn fire that claimed the lives of 27 animals, allegations from PETA about animal abuse, U.S. Department of Agriculture investigations and fines, the retirement of long-time director David Meeks, and lackluster revenues, Hollywild Animal Park in Inman is seeking direction from the public.

Leaders of the 100-acre park are reaching out to the community in a last-ditch effort to raise money or close permanently. The nonprofit park needs to raise $500,000 by the end of the year, said new executive director Kim Atchley. Another $250,000 annually would be needed for renovations, marketing and maintenance, she said. Currently, Hollywild’s annual Holiday Lights Safari is the park’s main fundraising effort each year.

To “raise the bar on our practices,” Atchley said the park hired a new animal curator, S. Nigel Platt, a seasoned veteran in zookeeping who has served as an AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) inspector.

Hollywild will continue to solicit community feedback through on online survey at surveymonkey.com/r/LPLXL2P. The park is asking for donations or in-kind gifts. A GoFundMe page has also been set up at gofundme.com/yjqwqvfy.

Twelve schools, including eight from the Upstate, will compete in the annual SC Bar Greenville Regional High School Mock Trial Competition Saturday at the Greenville County Courthouse.

During the competition, students will present the prosecution and defense sides of a fictitious criminal case that involves arson, robbery and the murder of a well-known woman in a small, fictitious South Carolina town.

Students serve as attorneys, witnesses, bailiffs and timekeepers. Each team will be judged on its presentation skills rather than the legal merits of the case.

Upstate teams include Bob Jones Academy, Greenville High Academy, Greenwood High, Legacy Early College High School, Montessori School of Anderson, NEXT High School, T.L. Hanna High and Wade Hampton High.

The SC Bar’s Law Related Education Division sponsors the mock trial program.

A total of 12 teams from five regional competitions will advance to the state competition in March.

Value-based care will transform health care IN MY OWN WORDS

By Angelo Sinopoli, MD Greenville Health System’s (GHS) vision is to transform health care for the benefit of the people and communities we serve. Our focus is on keeping individuals healthy and out of the hospital by providing care in community settings.

This is consistent with a national health care trend that is moving away from a fee-for-service to a value-based care model, in which payments are tied to improvements in health instead of number of services or procedures performed. This shift was prompted by the unsustainable growth of health care costs and focuses on transitioning payments to link to quality or value.

When GHS set the course to become a Total Health organization in 2007, we believed the future of health care would require a holistic approach focused on the wellness and health of patients. As evidenced by the national shift to value-based care, GHS recognizes the existing health care model no longer meets the health care needs of our community effectively, and we are confident that population-based care is the new model of care.

“Population health” is the health outcomes of a group of individuals, and “population health management” is the process of managing defined groups of individuals to improve outcomes while reducing costs. Although these interventions are not reimbursable today, population health management is important in keeping patients as healthy as possible while reducing costs by preventing the chronically ill from getting sicker and reducing the need for expensive interventions like emergency room visits or hospitalizations.

Our core population health goal is to keep individuals healthy and out of the hospital. However, access to care is frequently limited and socioeconomic

barriers keep patients from the care they need. Care needs to take place in the homes and communities where patients reside and must address behavioral and social determinants in addition to health outcomes. GHS has been working to improve the health of populations by focusing outside of the provider setting in area neighborhoods and the broader community.

GHS’ three-tiered model for population health management goes beyond the traditional provider platform to increase access to care in the community and enable residents to improve their health. GHS has worked to establish Patient-Centered Medical Neighborhoods (PCMN), where resources are taken into at-risk neighborhoods with the highest need, bringing access to care where none exists now. GHS is also developing Accountable Communities concentrated on addressing health barriers by partnering with safety-net providers and community resources to create and implement communitybased programs to encourage healthier communities.

In conjunction with providing quality care at the right time and right place, population health initiatives are essential in improving the health of the overall population as well as the individual patient. Building healthier populations is a top priority for GHS and we have been actively engaged in developing the tools and resources needed to address community health differently.

By Jack Bass Hillary Clinton isn’t given to talking about religion on the campaign trail, but she veered off that path in Iowa in response to a voter’s question a few days before the Iowa caucuses.

That insight may be of interest to South Carolina voters as focus here turns to the

Democratic presidential primary. The source is an article that ran on an inside page of the New York Times Jan. 30.

A voter in Knoxville, Iowa, asked Clinton if her beliefs aligned with the Ten Commandments. Times reporter Amy Chozick wrote that Clinton “reflected at length and spontaneously on her religious outlook.”

Thank you for reporting how the Free Medical Clinic is squeezed at both ends by an increase in patients and a reduction in private funding.

A cost number like $20,000 is made up of a quantity and a cost. Many times, I have found as an auditor that we take numbers like $20,000 in totals, but do not audit the cost or price factor. Just because a state agency says they need $X amount of money, for example, does not mean the price is fair or competitive. I’m not saying business interests are bad, because, just like NASCAR where the best mechanics work for the private teams, business is the locus of innovation and talent. But the culture of racing needs NASCAR to fairly enforce its rules.

I feel there must be price pressures put on all levels of government to help control costs.

Everyone is making money off health care, and more and more it seems the private doctorpatient relationship is being taken over by larger entities. For example, does the lady in the photo really need all the medicines, and could less-expensive medicines have been used?

In my view, the concept of an institutional culture of price auditing needs expansion in all areas of government to keep the share of our debt and expenditures in control.

Chozick cited a high school guidance counselor in Knoxville who opposes abortion and said she was conflicted about being Roman Catholic and supporting a Democrat. In response, Clinton said, “What does the Sermon on the Mount really mean?”

She was referring to the sermon quoted in the gospel of Mark in which Jesus outlines the eight beatitudes, including, “Blessed are the meek.” She continued, “It sure does seem to favor the poor and the merciful, and those who in worldly terms don’t have a lot, but who have the spirit that God recognizes as the core of love and salvation.”

A few days later, Bill Clinton mentioned to a crowd in Mason City, Iowa, that one of Hillary’s favorite hymns was “If I Could Help Somebody.” Chozick wrote that Hillary added, “the last line of every [verse] is, ‘If I can help somebody when I travel along, then my living will not be in vain.’”

In her memoir “Living History,” Clinton traces her Methodist roots to the 1700s. Her father’s parents “claimed they became Methodists because their greatgrandparents were converted in the small coal-mining villages around Newcastle in the north of England” by John Wesley

Paul G. Kengor, a professor of Grove City College and the author of “God and Hillary Clinton: A Spiritual Life,” describes her as “a classic, standard religious-left Christian who connects her faith to issues of poverty and helping people.”

Growing up in Chicago, Mrs. Clinton was active in the first United Methodist Church of Park Ridge, Ill. She taught Sunday school in Little Rock, Ark., and set up a Bible study group soon after moving to the White House.

Chozick reports that after the Monica Lewinsky scandal broke, Mrs. Clinton wrote in “Living History” that she “spent a lot of time alone, praying and reading.”

She and her husband prayed with pastor and author Gordon MacDonald, and she became a friend of Billy Graham.

Since moving to Chappaqua, N.Y., the Clintons have attended the United Methodist Church in nearby Mount Kisco. She has worshiped in church less frequently during the campaign, but says she regularly reads a leather-bound Bible, which she has called “the biggest influence on my thinking.”

How healthy is Greenville County?

Both of Greenville’s two major health systems began their work on improving the community’s health with a health survey mandated by the Affordable Care Act requirement for charitable 501(c)(3) hospitals. Bon Secours St. Francis has a community health survey underway this month. Anyone can participate by visiting stfrancishealth.org.

GHS conducted a community health needs assessment in 2013, finding that about 65 percent of Greenvillians are overweight or obese, nearly one-quarter smoke and more than one-quarter have a sedentary lifestyle.

The GHS survey also found: 16% of Greenville residents have no health insurance.

Self-reported individual health has steadily declined in the last 15 years.

Gone are the days when health systems competed for patients and championed new technology to fill hospital beds. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has pushed the nation’s health care industry into a new direction: keeping people healthy and out of the hospital.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, health care costs tripled in real terms between 1985 and 2005. Since the ACA became law, health care spending

Since most health care organizations accept government-funded Medicare and Medicaid patients, the ACA can influence change by setting financial mandates and incentives within those two systems. One such mandate was to have health systems measure their communities’ overall health and devise strategies to keep people well.

To address that goal, Bon Secours St. Francis and Greenville Health System (GHS) hold health fairs, sponsor runs, and promote healthier eating and activities for the general population. And for a smaller segment – people who visit emergency rooms repeatedly for both serious and simple illnesses – the two are trying something new: hands-on case management.

“The goal is to keep people healthy and at home,” said Johnna Reed, vice president of population health at Bon Secours St. Francis.

Keeping patients out of the ER Some Greenvillians, including uninsured adults, have so many chronic illnesses that they spend a lot of time in the hospital and the ER trying to get their diseases under control. Preventive care can improve people’s health and reduce costs, research shows. But from a health system’s perspective, the problem has always been finding money to pay for it.

“The things it takes to keep a community healthy are not reimbursable,” Reed said. “So what most health care systems are struggling with is that balancing act of how to keep the community healthy while not overinvesting in it.”

GHS started a program called Neighborhood Health Partners (NHP), which targets uninsured people who have very low incomes and multiple health challenges.

The program is part of the state’s Healthy Outcomes Plan (HOP) that gives a small amount of money to hospitals to help them care for chronically ill and uninsured people who visit ERs often.

Foundation grants provided most of the NHP funding. South Carolina’s HOP money pays $670 per patient per year in Greenville. By comparison, the average cost of an emergency room visit amounts to $797, Snow said.

Going where the heavy users are GHS worked with the Greenville County EMS to identify five fire districts with the highest EMS and emergency room use among low-income and uninsured populations, Snow said. The districts include Parker, Berea, Gantt, Belmont and the City of Greenville.

“When we first looked at our Medicaid population and the uninsured patients seen in our internal medicine clinics, we realized the reason they were going into the ER and were admitted into the hospital often was not for their chronic diseases, but for socioeconomic reasons,” Snow said.

One patient had visited the ER 148 times, including 39 within 12 months. The reason why was instructive: “The patient was in Piedmont and had no bus ride to get to the doctor, so always called EMS,” Snow said.

These findings led to the development of the Neighborhood Health Partners program. The program sends HEALTH continued on PAGE 10

When pundits talk about how some people are just one step from a catastrophic health issue that upends their life, they could be describing Bobby Sanders of the West Parker neighborhood.

Sanders worked for years in construction, including roofing. But his “wrong step” was an accident he had on his moped. Sanders had surgery at Greenville Memorial Hospital after his leg injury, and then he was sent home with a walker and medication. He couldn’t work and had no income, no health insurance and little family support.

Sanders’ recovery took a turn for the worse. He also had problems with seizures, and he might have been just one more uninsured, low-income person who fell through the cracks, except for a notable difference: He was enrolled in a special program designed to keep people healthy and out of the hospital.

Greenville Health System (GHS) and Greenville County EMS had initiated a pilot project through a grant, enrolling people who have limited health care access and multiple health problems. Called Neighborhood Health Partners (NHP), the program has a team of experts visiting enrollees across five Greenville neighborhoods.

A social worker, community health worker and a community paramedic connect with people who have had a health crisis.

Their goal is to help them find a doctor, keep their medical appointments and stay on medication, said Jennifer Snow, director of Accountable Communities with GHS. At a visit with Sanders in early February, social worker Darin Thomas made sure Sanders remembered his doctor’s appointment, asking, “And you’ll see him and a physical therapist today?” Thomas also asked Sanders about his landlord and how he was doing with his rent.

“One time, my church helped me out with $700 when I was behind on rent,” Sanders said.

“Is there anything else you need that you can think of?”

Thomas asked.

How does case management work?

Case or care management services typically are led by a nurse or social worker who helps patients when they are moving from the hospital to home or have had recent changes in their health.

Medicare patient Ponja Beck, who lives near Cleveland Park, has had serious and chronic illnesses for decades, but it wasn’t until she began to receive case management that she finally understood how to live healthier: “If you go to a doctor’s visit and they talk to you, but are not making you understand it, you don’t want to stop them and say, ‘Can you put that in layman’s terms, please?’”

Beck explains.

Within one recent seven-month period, Beck was hospitalized seven times for flare-ups of her lung and heart diseases, as well as her diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and fibromyalgia. Beck clearly needed help between hospitalizations and doctor’s visits, so the Greenville Health System (GHS) assigned her an RN care manager named Anita Norrick.

“I thank Anita for being on Team Ponja because she’s there when I need her, especially when I don’t understand a lot of the medical terms,” Beck said. “She calls me weekly and comes to my doctor’s visit.”

The case manager reminds Beck to check her insulin levels and to eat food that won’t exacerbate her diabetes and other illnesses. “She had me go to a GHS dietitian and learn how to manage food,” Beck said.

Thomas and longtime Greenville paramedic Roger Dobbs had begun to see Sanders in October 2015, when Sanders’ injured ankle became terribly swollen. It wasn’t healing well because Sanders found it difficult to rest, Dobbs said.

They helped him find a way to protect his injury while remaining mobile, and continued to check on him regularly.

Since the NHP began visiting him last fall, Sanders has had no emergency room visits or hospitalizations. They’ve helped him connect with the Greenville Free Clinic, which is where he receives regular checkups, and they’ve helped him find rides to doctor’s visits.

For Sanders, the visits have helped a lot and have him thinking about returning to work: “They come out here and check on me to see if I’m okay,” Sanders said. “I feel better now.”

Although Beck’s medical conditions are serious and incurable, she has remained stable and out of the hospital due to case management, she said.

When Beck speaks with her case manager, she can share her recent health issues and discuss concerns.

With her support, Beck developed better eating habits, now eating oatmeal, Greek yogurt or fruit smoothies for breakfast, turkey salad or sandwich for lunch, and baked fish, salad or baked chicken for dinner.

“Case management educates you,” Beck said. “When someone is educating you about your health, it makes you care about your body even more.”

But Norrick’s regular and lengthy calls have meant even more than better health education to Beck: “Anita is a jewel because she is in my corner, helping me,” Beck said.

“I call her my angel because if I’m having one of those blue days, she is the one that will come see me or say, ‘Do I need to come visit, or is there something I can do?’”

The program soon will have a year’s worth of data showing whether it works, she said – but the hope is it will result in fewer ER visits by people who do not have a medical emergency.

Health care on wheels GHS just rolled out a Mobile Health Clinic to help people who are uninsured or underinsured with their health care needs. Staffed by a nurse practitioner, a paramedic-trained driver, and a business office representative, the rolling clinic will visit underserved populations and provide primary health care services inside the 40-foot

customized RV. Services will be free to people who have no insurance.

Some health care organizations address population health by joining an accountable care organization (ACO), which the federal government defines as a group of hospitals, doctors and other health care providers who give coordinated highquality care to their Medicare patients. The ACO ensures patient care is high-quality and lowercost by avoiding medical errors and service duplication, Reed said. When an ACO is successful, Medicare allows it to share in cost savings.

Bon Secours St. Francis started one of the first ACOs in South Carolina, Reed said. “That gave us the ability to develop new skill sets and team capabilities.”

St. Francis collects and analyzes claims data on its overall Medicare population of 66,000 beneficiaries to find health trends and ways to improve care, she said. “We could see if people filled their prescriptions on time. That tells us whether they are taking their medication.”

The data analysis identifies Medicare patients who are at the highest risk of serious health problems based on recent hospitalizations and emergency department (ED) visits, Reed said.

“We engage them, using a team approach that includes a primary care provider, an RN case manager, an LPN who does outreach, and licensed social workers, who connect them with the right community services,” she said.

Who gives poor, uninsured patients primary care services?

The Greenville Free Medical Clinic, which has sites in the City of Greenville, Simpsonville, Greer and off North Franklin Road, provides volunteer doctors and nurses who see patients with no insurance and very low incomes, below 137 percent of the federal poverty level. There are no copayments or bills for the office visits, medication, lab tests, dentistry and other services they receive.

Most people visiting the free clinics are middle-aged, not yet eligible for Medicare, which starts at age 65.

“We’re the safety net under the safety net for those who still fall through the cracks,”

“Some [visits] are for episodic care for the flu or strep throat or a dental issue. We have at least 1,000 patients who have diabetes.”

The medical clinic receives some staff and other funding from Bon Secours St. Francis and the Greenville Health System, who send uninsured patients to the clinic for primary care services, Foley said.

“We provide a medical home for patients they see in the emergency room or are discharging from an inpatient stay when the patient doesn’t have a medical doctor for follow-up,” she said.

Greenville lacks space for convention center, study says

defunct visitors center was planned.

The county is currently soliciting offers for highest and best offers on that property, and Taylor says the study results indicate that “it might be a good idea to sell the property and then look at another location in the future” for a conference center.

HSP recommended against adding on to the existing Hyatt Hotel, for space and cost reasons and because “development is moving west, instead of anchoring a north end amenity,” the consultants said. A County Square site was also thrown out as the county told HSP it wasn’t available.

Parking and congestion are big concerns for a downtown facility, but meeting planners want “meet, greet and eat space” where attendees can walk. Downtown hotels hold 68 percent of meetings across the country, the consultants said.

TD Center and trends

From the study: The two potential sites are the River Place site and the East Broad Street site. As shown, these sites can barely accommodate the recommended convention hotel, so considering them for a full convention center (plus hotel and parking) would not have been feasible.

sjackson@communityjournals.com Greenville has neither the funding nor the space to build a new convention/conference center downtown, Chicago-based Hunden Strategic Partners said in a feasibility study released this week.

Instead, HSP recommends “the development of a larger convention hotel property that includes the most compelling elements of a meeting facility, without the costs and size of an independent convention center.”

The City of Greenville, joined by Greenville County and VisitGreenvilleSC, requested the study to examine whether a conference center is feasible downtown to draw more business-focused people from out of the area to spend money eating at restaurants, shopping in retail stores and staying at hotels.

“It’s important that we did the study,” said County Councilman Bob Taylor. “We now have a good picture of the lay of the land.”

The verdict HSP’s 244-page report said Greenville is still very much “a drive market” for conferences because of the “airline situation” and regional location, and thus attracts smaller-type meetings.

For the minimum convention center size that would make sense for Greenville, 12+ acres are needed, the consultants told a group of city business leaders in a presenta-

tion earlier this week. “As a result of these site constraints, along with the lack of significant funding for a true convention facility, HSP does not recommend building a convention center in downtown Greenville,” HSP says.

HSP analyzed three different sizes of convention center complexes in the study, but recommended a mid-point option to include a minimum 450-room “headquarters” hotel with a Marriott, Sheraton or Hilton branding. The hotel should offer at minimum a 25,000-square-foot ballroom, 10,000-square-foot junior ballroom and 16,000 square feet of breakout meeting rooms.

The cost is beyond what the market will bear, the consultants said, so a public subsidy would be required. Total cost? Approximately $135 million in public funding, not including the land. A proposed incentive package in the study could include money from local accommodations tax, hospitality tax and state accommodations tax, which could offset that cost by 35 percent.

Where to put the new destination hotel?

The city asked HSP to evaluate four initial sites: property near the Bon Secours Wellness Arena, property near the former proposed Visitors Center on River Street, a site near Fluor Field and property near East Broad and Church Streets.

Because of the proximity to existing and proposed new hotels, size of contiguous property available and walkability to downtown, that list was then narrowed to two: River Street and East Broad Street. The Broad Street property is currently owned by Timberland Capital Partners. The River Street property is owned by developer Phil Hughes, with the exception of a 1.1-acre parcel owned by Greenville County on which a now-

Meeting planners today are looking for much different type of space than in the past, and the market views the TD Center as “a glorified expo center, not a true convention center,” HSP said.

HSP received 56 responses from meeting planners it surveyed as part of the study. While many said they like Greenville, the planners said they do not need major exhibit space, but they do want adjacent or walkable hotels within 1,200-1,500 linear feet. The lack of hotel room at the TD center creates logistical challenges as well, those surveyed said.

“Despite its limitations, we have a great facility in the TD Center,” said Julie Horton, government relations manager with the city of Greenville. “It’s very well run.

The limitation is in the building itself, but we will continue to nurture it and take care of it to have a space for meetings and events.”

Recommendations The consultants suggest that the city save money and find new funding sources over the next several years while it assembles 15-20 acres of land near downtown for the convention hotel and parking needed. “HSP does not recommend that this hotel open sooner than 2020” to allow time for absorption of the “nearly 1,000 new hotel rooms coming into the market in the next two years,” HSP said.

Chris Stone, president of VisitGreenvilleSC, said he was uncertain from the presentation given this week as to what a new convention hotel would do to overall market demand and hotel room demand on the days when no conferences were scheduled.

“I’m not surprised the findings show a building, parking and headquarter hotel,” Stone said. “But if downtown continues to run at a very high average [hotel room bookings], it’ll still be really hard to get room blocks, and that’s what meeting planners are looking for. We need to take a really hard look at market demand and make sure there’s sufficient demand and let that be the lead on where we go.”

bjeffers@communityjournals.com The South Carolina presidential primary will help answer a big question for Hillary Clinton: How will her opponent fare among black voters?

With over half the voters in Saturday’s primary expected to be black, Clemson University political science professor Bruce Ransom said South Carolina offers the first test among a diverse electorate for Democratic candidates Clinton and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

“For the Democrats, in a base Republican state [such as South Carolina] the AfricanAmerican vote is crucial,” Ransom said.

While Nevada – which Clinton won – was more diverse than the previous states, the Palmetto State has even greater diversity and could be a good bellwether of how the black vote will go in future states, he said.

In a press call last month, Sanders’ South Carolina state director, Chris Covert, said the senator was gaining traction among African-American voters.

Ransom said the primary will show “if Clinton is able to withstand the inroads that Sanders is able to make” among minorities.

Sanders recently picked up the endorsement of film director Spike Lee and actor Danny Glover. Glover was campaigning in South Carolina this week for Sanders.

If Sanders can win the state or at least stay close, Ransom said “that would say something about Sanders’ viability going forward.”

Black voters are drawn to Clinton, he said, because they liked her husband when he was president and many see her as a more practical choice than Sanders.

South Carolina’s only Democratic congressman, Jim Clyburn, endorsed Clinton last week.

Clyburn originally said he would refrain from endorsing a candidate before the South Carolina primary. However, last week, days before the Nevada caucus, Clyburn threw his support behind Hillary Clinton.

Clyburn said Sanders never asked for his endorsement.

The congressman had a strained relationship with former President Bill Clinton after the 2008 South Carolina primary when Clinton compared then-Sen. Barack Obama’s victory in the state to that of Rev. Jesse Jackson in the 1988 caucus.

People viewed Bill Clinton’s comments as diminishing Obama’s win because of race, and Clyburn spoke out against the former president’s comments.

The endorsement could be a way to show that Clyburn doesn’t hold any animosity toward the Clintons, Ransom said.

Hillary Clinton looks poised to win South Carolina easily, according to polls.

But in an election cycle that has already shocked analysts, Ransom was hesitant to make any bold predictions of what will happen on Saturday.

“The proof of the pie is in the eating, so on election day we’ll have to see what happens,” he said.

Legislators seek to audit GHS BENJAMIN JEFFERS | STAFF

bjeffers@communityjournals.com Members of the Greenville legislative delegation have requested that the South Carolina Legislative Audit Council conduct an audit of the Greenville Health System.

The legislators sent a letter requesting an audit of the GHS Office of Philanthropy and “all other related departments or not-for-profit organizations substantially controlled by GHS” that are involved with fundraising or soliciting charitable donations for projects.

“The Greenville Health System Office of Philanthropy and Partnership can assure donors that their dollars are used as they are directed,” said George Maynard, vice president of institutional advancement for GHS. “Each dollar given is used for the purpose for which it is intended and will continue to be so.”

State Rep. Mike Burns (R-Taylors) said the audit request is directly related to the hospital system’s move to change its governance structure. He said he has concerns about how GHS spends its money, since the organization is a political subdivision of the state. Ten of the 22-member delegation signed the letter.

Recently, the GHS board of trustees moved forward with plans that pave the way for GHS to become part of a multiregional health system governed by a private, nonprofit board. GHS would continue as a public entity, but would lease its facilities and grant operational control to this independent board, which would be based in Greenville, GHS officials have said.

Burns was one of the delegation’s leading opponents of the power transfer, saying the health system’s plans could be hidden from the public if governance is handed over to a private entity.

“Sunlight’s a good thing,” he said. “Getting everyone involved is a good thing.”

He also provided the Journal with an email, attributed to GHS Department of Medicine chair Peter Tilkemeier, that discusses the need for measures to get the health system “back to budget.” Burns said he confirmed the email is real, and GHS officials did not deny that the email is legitimate.

The email discusses immediate measures the “senior leadership team” is taking to suspend reimbursements for meals and entertainment except as needed for recruitment, and states that a hold has been placed “on any open positions,”

each of which “will be analyzed on a mission critical basis prior to filling.”

The email goes on to say senior leadership has “also asked our practice managers to assist in gathering information if we need to progress to the next step of a work force reduction.”

GHS spokesperson Sandy Dees issued a statement to the Journal saying, “We always look for ways to control our expenses. Like any business, it is appropriate for GHS to consider whether it will move forward with budgeted plans and positions. GHS remains focused on patient care, research and educating the next generation of physicians, nurses and other clinicians. We’ve made the strategic decision to invest in our communities.

For example, GHS in 2015 provided $85.6 million in support to the community and community health partners, as well as $92 million in charity care and government-supported healthcare services.”

Burns said the email is evidence that the administration is spending money improperly on advertising, community projects and a lawsuit related to the governance change, but “then the very people who treat the patients are being trimmed back.”

GHS paid $303,000 to cover the legal fees for the governance-change lawsuit filed with the S.C. Supreme Court, GHS said. That amount covers the health system, the three former board members who filed the original petition and the defense costs for the two board members cited as defendants in the petition.

The Supreme Court refused to accept the case.

Burns also raised concerns for how funds were raised and spent for a planned neurology center the health system holds will begin construction in three to five years.

In a statement provided by GHS, Tilkemeier said, “Programs of this magnitude, that can benefit so many people, can take significant time to plan, design and build.”

The audit request will go before the five-member Legislative Audit Council next week, said LAC Director Earle Powell. If the board is unable to consider the agenda item next week, the request will be taken up sometime in April, he said.

If approved, audits typically take three to six months to complete, Powell said.

With the special funding source that has paid for downtown and West End improvement projects over the last three decades drying up, some of Greenville’s downtown business leaders are urging city leaders to pause to prioritize projects that will continue the city’s growth.

“When the big money stops flowing, the little money that remains has to be spent all the more wisely,” said a letter sent to City Council members by more than two dozen downtown business leaders.

TIF districts allowed the city to use increased tax revenue that new development in the central business district and West End would generate to finance the cost of the infrastructure needed to support that development.

Over the years, the city has issued bonds to pay for taxpayer-funded improvements such as city parking garages, sewer improvements and streetscaping to coincide with private development.

Land values increased, generating new tax revenue to pay off the bonds and fund more work in the district.

State law was changed to allow counties and cities to either negotiate the revenue split or opt out of TIFs and collect their share of the money. As a result of that change, the city will get less money until the TIFs end in 2021.

Sprague, who volunteered to chair the committee, said she wants to have recommendations to council within eight weeks.

“We have to set priorities on where do we want to incentivize development and what types of developments will be the catalyst for the growth our citizens want to see,” she said. “The city needs to be clear in what its participation will be.”

“We know the city has only the greatly contracted TIF funds and some small part of general funds to address failing sewer infrastructure, demands for traffic solutions, developer requests and area requests for parking garages and streetscapes, the need to relocate Public Works, a park to follow that relocation, etc.,” the letter said. “You face immediate demands that could require more than every remaining dollar, leaving the City with no funds or plans for future projects.”

Plans for a QuikTrip convenience store near the corner of Academy and North Markley streets can move forward after a divided Greenville City Council approved a controversial zoning change Monday night.

The 4-2 vote, with council members David Sudduth and Jil Littlejohn voting no, came after a parade of citizens pleaded both sides of the case.

The vote changed the zoning of about 0.61 acres of land across from the Kroc Center from C-4 (central business district) and RM-2 (single and multifamily residential) zoning to C-2 (local commercial district), a classification that allows the city to place restrictions on the property and helps protect the neighborhood.

Opponents said the QT didn’t conform to the city’s comprehensive plan for a gateway to downtown, would create school safety and traffic issues, would result in removal of historic trees and would harm views of the mountains from downtown Greenville.

But Diane Keller, president of the West End Community Association, said she has no problem with QT coming to her neighborhood. She said residents are “worried about the next set of apartments.”

Council member Lillian Brock Flemming, who voted in favor of the rezoning because she said that’s what residents of the immediate area wanted, asked opponents where they were when high-rise residential developments were proposed in the West End that cut off the view.

“If we leave it zoned C-4, I don’t know what will happen to the neighborhood,” she said. “When the high-rise apartments cut off the view, where were all of you

then? When they were buying property for $12,000 and selling it for $600,000, where were you then? I’m voting for the neighborhood that lives there.”

Paton Blough, a city resident who is leading the fight against QT, told the council the QT didn’t conform to the city’s comprehensive plan. “I’m pleading with you, don’t pick the lesser of two evils,” he said.

Littlejohn said although QuikTrip modified its design to “show major improvements” to blend into the urban environment, she still couldn’t vote for the change.

“When the high-rise apartments cut off the view, where were all of you then? When they were buying property for $12,000 and selling it for $600,000, where were you then? I’m voting for the neighborhood that lives there.”

Before he cast his no vote, Sudduth said he saw a lot of similarities between the proposed QT project and a 2012 proposal to build a Spinx neighborhood market and convenience store along Buncombe Street on the former Gene’s Restaurant.

“It really centered around whether Buncombe Street, a major corridor into downtown Greenville, was the right place for a c-store,” said Sudduth, who voted with the majority against rezoning in that case.

“I honestly can’t draw enough distinction between this and Buncombe Street.”

Before the vote, Steve Spinks, CEO of the Spinx Company, said he was told the Buncombe Street store would have to be unique because it was on a gateway to downtown. But when he proposed one, it was voted down.

“I’m concerned with the apparent inconsistency,” he told council, saying that he was not speaking against QT, which he said represents his industry well.

Spinx is renovating its store on Pendleton Street, less than a half-mile away from the proposed QT. It will include a community garden, in partnership with the Feed & Seed organization. Village of West Greenville artists will design a sign on the property.

Greenville disabilities board becomes Thrive Upstate BENJAMIN JEFFERS | STAFF

bjeffers@communityjournals.com Greenville County Disabilities and Special Needs Board was never an easy name to say or remember, and gave what many felt was an inaccurate idea of how the organization operated.

On Thursday, the GCDSNB unveiled its new name: Thrive Upstate.

Executive Director John Cocciolone says the new brand will help the organization with fundraising so they can expand the services they offer and clear up confusion.

The old name gave a wrong impression of how the organization was controlled, Cocciolone said. Leveraging outside funding is difficult “because everybody thinks we’re a government agency, and government agencies don’t fundraise,” he said.

CLEARING UP CONFUSION Many people thought the agency was county-run, he said, as the governing board is chosen by Greenville County Council. Others thought it was governed by the state, because more than 80 percent of its funding comes from the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and

Special Needs, which has a similar name but is a separate organization.

“The confusion continues,” Cocciolone said, “so we needed to really get away from that Greenville County moniker and the Disabilities and Special Needs moniker because Disabilities and Special Needs is a state agency, Greenville County is a county agency and we’re neither.”

Thrive Upstate is a quasi-government agency, Cocciolone said: a private, nonprofit organization that has contracted to provide disability services in Greenville County. The board of directors must adhere to open meetings guidelines and its members are nominated by Greenville County Council and confirmed by the governor.

The way the organization operates will not change, Cocciolone said.

“Our job is really to pull out as much talent or as much ability a person has and integrate them into the community,” he said.

Agency staff help about 500 people with disabilities get jobs at companies, and almost all workers make at least minimum wage. Some workers with severe disabilities make less than minimum wage for work outlined by U.S. De-

WEATHER El Nino fading, but rain to pound farmers until April One of the most powerful El Ninos recorded during the last six decades is starting to loosen its grip, but South Carolina farmers may not see significant relief from relentless rain until April. All the rain has put farmers behind, especially for crops such as wheat and corn.

Forecasters expect the 2015-16 El Nino, an unusual warming of the tropical waters of the equatorial Pacific that results in frequent low-pressure systems and rainy and stormy spells in the Southeast, to fade sometime this spring.

Climatologists say the El Nino could fade into a neutral period or immediately be replaced by a La Nina, in which the surface water in the Pacific becomes cooler than normal. El Nino and La Nina periods typically don’t have much of an effect on summer weather patterns.

Hope Mizzell, the state climatologist for the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, said that neutral or La Nina conditions will likely result in a warmer, drier late fall and winter.

The organization also helps about 2,200 people with intellectual and related disabilities through the work program and other services, according to the agency website.

“I think the main thing here is we’re talking about people,” said Craig Byrd, director of development and marketing.

“They are people with challenges maybe a little different from what we have challenges with, but they’re people.”

The agency is hopeful that better fundraising and new contracts will also help the staff assist more people who have been put on a waiting list for state funding.

LEARNING FROM THE PAST The Greenville County Disabilities and Special Needs Board went though a turbulent time in 2012 with mismanagement by the board and top leadership, which culminated in Greenville County Council disbanding the board and establishing a new one.

When John Cocciolone became executive director in 2013, he said GCDSNB had a $500,000 annual deficit for about five years, transport vans with 300,000 miles on them, and residency housing that had leaking roofs.

He said leadership has cut expenses over the past three years and seen surpluses during that time. The 2015 surplus was $1.2 million, according to a community report.

But Cocciolone said the surpluses are not enough to cover replacing all the vans and fixing all the housing needs, and hopes the rebranding will bring in more funds for those projects and present a better image for in the community.

“We’re good stewards of how we use the resources now,” he said.

Clemson tough Book tells story of Tigers’ magical season and the coach who led them there CINDY LANDRUM | STAFF

clandrum@communityjournals.com Throughout his life, Dabo Swinney has been proving his doubters wrong.

He was told he couldn’t walk on at Alabama. He did. He was told he couldn’t earn a scholarship. He did.

When the little-known assistant coach was named Clemson’s interim head coach after Terry Bowden resigned six games into the 2008 season, he was told he couldn’t get the job for good. He did.

“This guy has been told all his life that he couldn’t do something,” said Larry Williams of TigerIllustrated.com and author of “Clemson Tough: Guts and Glory Under Dabo Swinney,” the story behind Clemson’s 2015 season. The book, published by Arcadia Publishing, is now already in its second printing even though the official release date was Feb. 15, just

five weeks after the season ended with a five-point loss to Alabama in the National Championship Game.

“Dabo has been proving doubters wrong all of his life. It fit perfectly for the narrative of the season,” Williams said.

That’s because even while the Tigers finished the regular reason undefeated, won the Atlantic Coast Conference championship and beat favored Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl to play for the national championship against football powerhouse Alabama, doubters remained.

“They earned more respect nationally by losing to Alabama than they did by beating Oklahoma by 20 points,” Williams said.

Williams, who has written books about the Danny Ford era at Clemson and the Clemson-Carolina rivalry, said

he realized after the Florida State game in November that 2015 was looking like a book-worthy season.

After the Tigers won the ACC Championship Game in early December, he had a book deal. He started writing the book the second week in December. It was about 85 percent written by the Orange Bowl. Four days after the National Championship Game, the manuscript was on its way to the publisher.

Williams didn’t want “Clemson Tough” to be a commemorative book.

“I wanted it to be more than the story of the season, far more than a playby-play,” he said. “I wanted it to be the story of how they got to the point where they could beat the heavyweights of college football and be a heavyweight themselves.”

How did Clemson and USC score on recruits?

After the bowl season wrapped up in early January, the next big thing college football fans had to look forward to was national signing day, on the first Wednesday of each February. Three main phases of college football produce a quality product on the field: talent acquisition, talent development, and coaching.

The first of the three is where signing day reigns supreme.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that past national champions have also finished near the top of the recruiting rankings many of the years leading up to their title. The best way to win games on a consistent basis is to have the best players, and the elite of the elite can make a huge difference.

Take Clemson, for example. True sophomore Deshaun Watson was a five-star prospect and ranked by rivals as the No. 1 dual threat QB in the country for the 2014 class. He was instrumental in guiding the Tigers to a 14-1 record and a national title game appearance against Alabama. It’s also no coincidence that the Gamecocks were able to record three consecutive 11-win seasons on the shoulders of stud recruits Marcus Lattimore, Alshon Jeffrey and Jadeveon Clowney.

The 2016 signing class for South Carolina’s two big in-state programs is truly a tale of opposites.

The Tigers were able to carry the momentum of a 14-1 season and secondplace finish in the final college football polls to an excellent class that wound up finishing fifth overall in the country.

Clemson’s class addressed a number of needs, which included signing three of the top 16 players in the country, regardless of position. Coach Dabo Swinney was also able to get in on a number of highly rated defensive backs at the 11th hour, which softened the blow of three starters departing as early entries into the 2016 NFL draft.

USC’s season was a forgettable one for most Gamecock fans, which hit a breaking point when Spurrier resigned midyear. A shroud of uncertainty hung over the Gamecock program for nearly three months, which can make retaining and obtaining recruits tremendously difficult. However, in December, the Gamecocks were finally able to lock a coach down in former Florida head coach Will Muschamp, who hit the ground running and was able to take the 2016 Gamecock recruiting class to a respectable 26th in the country.

The No. 2 overall player in the country and the No. 2 defensive tackle is an early enrollee who should see the field from Day One. The Tigers beat out local favorite N.C. State for his services, although Lawrence held offers from virtually every school in the country. The prospect was virtually unblockable during the Army All-American practices and nearly unseeded Gary for the nation’s top ranked player overall.

Rahshaun Smith / Linebacker 6’2” 226 lbs. / Brandenton, Fla.

Originally from Maryland and rated the No. 1 outside linebacker in the country, Smith played high school football at the IMG Academy in Florida.

Originally committed to Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tigers before the 2015 football season, he de-committed when he had the desire to take official visits to other schools throughout the fall of his senior year. Randy Edsall positioned Maryland to be a contender for his services but was fired mid-season, leading Smith to look elsewhere before ultimately rejoining the Tigers.

Tre Lamar / Linebacker 6’3” 240 lbs. / Roswell, Ga.

Ranked as the No. 2 inside linebacker in the country, Lamar was another huge get for Venables as he restocks his linebacker position. The would-be senior in high school is already enrolled at Clemson, where he looks to contend for significant playing time with the departure of senior middle linebacker B.J. Goodson. Lamar showed off physicality as well as the ability to cover receivers downfield in the Under Armor All American game this year.

Cornell Powell / Wide receiver 6’1” 190 lbs. / Greenville, N.C.

A well-built physical receiver who had offers from numerous big schools in the area, the North Carolina native thought about de-committing to take visits elsewhere, but ultimately decided the lure of playing for “Wide-Receiver U” was too tempting. Powell absolutely exploded at the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, leaving no doubt who the best offensive weapon on either team was.

Tavien Feaster / Running back 5’11” 192 lbs. / Spartanburg, S.C.

Clemson’s lone running back commitment for 2016 was a good one. Track-type speed in a large frame for a high school running back, Feaster will be able to provide a dynamic all-purpose threat to the Clemson offense. Ranked as the No. 1 running back in the country for the majority of the recruiting cycle, his stock dropped slightly toward the end of his senior season. It was later revealed that he played through a torn labrum most of his senior year and is undergoing surgery later this month to repair. He certainly has the talent to see some snaps in 2016; his recovery and rehabilitation will go a long way in determining just how much he plays.

Jamarcus King / Defensive back 6’2” 180 lbs. / Coffeyville, Kan.

King was a great get for the Gamecocks that needed immediate help in the secondary. The tall, rangy JUCO transfer could possibly provide an impact at safety or corner, but will likely get his first crack at one of the starting corner spots. The aggressive defensive back was rated as the seventh overall JUCO prospect for the 2016 class. With no shortage of suitors, the Gamecocks were able to beat out Auburn and Florida for his services.

Brandon McIlwain / Quarterback 5’11” 188 lbs. / Newtown, Pa.

There’s little question that South Carolina is in desperate need of a playmaker at the quarterback position, and help appears on the way with two-sport standout Brandon McIlwain. Originally committed to Spurrier’s staff, the prospect began to look elsewhere during the coaching transition, mainly to local Penn State. However, Muschamp made securing McIlwain’s services a top priority and was able to keep him in the fold for the Gamecock’s 2016 class. The early enrollee has a lively arm, with the talent to make defenses pay with his legs as well. Also playing baseball for the Gamecocks this spring, the highly touted quarterback was frequently compared to Russell Wilson throughout his recruitment.

Bryan Edwards / Wide receiver 6’3” 205 lbs. / Conway, S.C.

Rarely did South Carolina and Clemson compete for recruits this cycle; however, Edwards was sought after by both football programs. This sixthranked player in the state was being pursued by Clemson as a safety, whereas USC offered him an opportunity to play his position of choice at WR. Given his size, and the Gamecocks’ need for playmakers at the receiver position, Edwards is another 2016 signee who could find himself on the field this fall.

Kiel Pollard / ATH 6’1” 228 lbs. / Moultrie, Ga.

Pollard is the 15th-ranked athlete in the country and the 23rd-best player in the talent-rich state of Georgia. Pollard was one of the first big recruiting gets for Muschamp’s new staff, committing to Coach Bobby Bentley a week before signing day. With the size and athleticism to play a variety of positions on the next level, Pollard figures to get his first crack at the receiver position, where he has been very elusive and hard to bring down after the catch.

Darius Whitfield / Defensive tackle 6’1” 268 lbs. / Mobile, Ala.

Darius Whitfield is ranked as the 28th-best defensive tackle in the country and the 11th overall player from the state of Alabama. The prospect displays great quickness and exceptional hand technique for a player at his stage. Whitfield is versatile enough to play in the interior in a 4-3 scheme, or as an end in the 3-4 scheme. Given the Gamecocks’ lack of production on the defensive line in 2015, he figures to receive ample opportunity for early playing on defense for South Carolina in 2016.

Imagine a place where authentic cultural lessons give students a global vision of the world.

When the Greenville Road Warriors, the Upstate’s ECHL hockey team, decided to change their name last year, it was with one idea in mind: Engaging the community in a way they hadn’t before.

The team had just signed a new five-year lease at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena, and they wanted to connect with Greenville more personally. And thus the Greenville Swamp Rabbits (named after the popular Greenville Health System Swamp Rabbit Trail) were born.

Rabbits’ vice-president of marketing. “We wanted to be ‘Greenville’s hockey team.’ So we started to re-evaluate who we were and our brand, and ‘Road Warriors’ didn’t make sense for who we were in the community and where we wanted to be.”

But behind the scenes the team had been working to strengthen ties with the Upstate since 2010. The team had long held an annual Toys For Tots “Teddy Bear Toss” night before the Christmas holidays, where ticket buyers were asked to bring a stuffed toy to throw onto the ice after the team’s first goal. The stuffed animals were then personally delivered to needy children by members of the team. On average, the Swamp Rabbits have delivered between 2,500 and 3,000 stuffed animals to children per year. But that’s not all the team was doing.

“We’ve also been doing the ‘Face Off for Fitness’ program since before the name change,” Dotson says. “That’s where we go into an after-school program with our assistant coach and our athletic trainer and teach children the important of nutrition and healthy living, as well as playing some one-on-one hockey. We do that once a month for our entire six-month season.”

Since the beginning of 2016, though, the team’s work within the community has reached a new level. “We’re working with nonprofits like the American Heart Association,” Dotson says. “We’re doing a Heart Walk with them on April 9. Our goal was to raise $2,000, but we’ve exceeded that already, so we’re going to set another goal.”

And the Swamp Rabbits’ work with the Heart Association has been so successful that other organizations have been reaching out, according to James Kalinowski, the team’s community relations coordinator. “Since we’ve been working with the Heart Association, I’ve also had the National Kidney Foundation and the American Diabetes Association contact us. They’ve been reaching out because they see what we’ve been doing in the community.”

Kalinowski says that part of his job is getting the players and coaches involved in community events, but one player has taken that job to heart: Defenseman Justin Da Silva. “Justin’s done a lot of different things,” Kalinowski says, “from going to the Ronald McDonald house where we cook food for families, to speaking to a class of first-graders. He takes the extra step of getting to know people and making sure to come back and do these events again and again.”

In January, DaSilva and former player Reid Campbell visited Natalie, a first-grade student at First Presbyterian Academy who suffers from several major heart complications. Both players surprised her at school during an unannounced visit.

“Natalie is such a special young girl,” Da Silva says. “Spending an afternoon with her makes you think about taking the little things for granted. Her personality and courage had an immediate impact on me, and it’s such a privilege to be able to give back to things like that in the community. It’s the little things we can do to give back that make such a big difference.”

Your REALTOR®, title company or attorney can help you resolve issues that might cause problems at a later date.

6. Your REALTOR® can help you in understanding different financing options and in identifying qualified lenders.

7. Your REALTOR® can guide you through the closing process and make sure everything flows together smoothly.

8. When selling your home, your REALTOR® can give you up-to-date information on what is happening in the marketplace and the price, financing, terms and condition of competing properties. These are key factors in getting your property sold at the best price, quickly and with

minimum hassle.

9. Your REALTOR® markets your property to other real estate agents and the public. Often, your REALTOR® can recommend repairs or cosmetic work that will significantly enhance the salability of your property. When a property is marketed with the help of your REALTOR®, you do not have to allow strangers into your home. Your REALTOR® will generally prescreen and accompany qualified prospects through your property.

11. Your REALTOR® can help you objectively evaluate every buyer’s proposal without compromising your marketing position. This initial agreement is only the beginning of a process of appraisals, inspections and financing -- a lot of possible pitfalls. Your REALTOR® can help you write a legally binding, win-win agreement that will be more likely to make it through the process.

12. Your REALTOR® can help close the sale of your home. Between the initial sales agreement and closing (or settlement), questions may arise.

For example, unexpected repairs are required to obtain financing or a cloud in the title is discovered. The required paperwork alone is overwhelming for most sellers. Your REALTOR® is the best person to objectively help you resolve these issues and move the transaction to closing (or settlement).

How sweet it is - Cookies worth breaking a fast over lemon flavor. Cookies made with this dough seem to hold their shape really well.

My baking secret is an old rolling pin. Carved from a single piece of poplar wood and boasting only one handle, this rolling pin was made around 1880 for my greatgrandmother who gave it to her daughter, my Nannie. I suppose it has rolled out hundreds of biscuits and yeasty angel rolls. If our house were on fire, I would do my best to save it.

Even if I decide to give up sugar, I plan to keep baking, at least occasionally. Rolling and cutting somehow seems therapeutic after a day in the office. Sugar and butter and vanilla scent the air in a way that soothes the soul. Chicks and bunnies and geese line up in an orderly way that daily demands seldom do.

INGREDIENTS February 1, the Mister and I began a 30-day cleanse that requires us to cut out all dairy, alcohol, sugar, soy and legumes from our diet. And I mean all.

In what many of you will see as a serious lack of judgment, I used all the time I saved by not eating to closely follow the presidential campaign. This lapse probably explains why I dreamed that I visited a relative’s house only to find Chris Christie already there, playing Candyland with his grandchildren. Thankfully, I woke before they started a rousing game of Marco Rubio – er, Polo – in the backyard pool!

Despite the crazy dreams, I’m contemplating continuing the cleanse until Easter, and I’ve already begun to think seriously about how I’ll break my fast.

When the children were little, we celebrated almost every holiday with cut-out sugar cookies. We loved the thrill of mixing and rolling, cutting and baking, and decorating.

And, of course, the eating! This year I thought, why not put some homemade cookies in our Easter baskets rather than lots of tiny bites of foil-wrapped chocolate? The cookies make awfully nice table decorations and favors, too.

I’ve experimented with several different cookie dough recipes, but my current favorite is this one from Williams Sonoma. It has a tiny bit of cardamom, which adds a slight

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

12 tbs. (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature, cut into tablespoon-size pieces

1/4 tsp. baking powder

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1/4 tsp. salt

1 tsp. vanilla extract

1/4 tsp. ground cardamom

1 egg

DIRECTIONS Sift together the flour, baking powder, salt and cardamom; set aside.

In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the flat beater, beat the butter and granulated sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Beat in the vanilla and egg. Reduce the speed to low and add the flour mixture in three additions, scraping down the sides of the bowl after each addition. Mix until just combined.

Form the dough into a disc, wrap with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 3 hours or overnight.

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line 2 baking sheets with nonstick liners or parchment paper.

On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to 1/4-inch thickness.

Using cookie cutters, cut out desired shapes. Transfer to the prepared baking sheets, spacing cookies about 2 inches apart, and bake until just golden around the edges, 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the size of the cookies. Transfer the pans to wire racks and let cool for 5 minutes, then remove the cookies from the pans and let cool completely.

Kindred spirits Amy Grant and Steven Curtis Chapman are sharing a stage for the first time VINCENT HARRIS | CONTRIBUTOR

Given the amount the two performers have in common, it’s hard to believe that Steven Curtis Chapman and Furman University alum Amy Grant haven’t toured together at some point.

After all, they both made their names as Contemporary Christian performers in the 1980s (though Grant has since made detours into pop and country music), they’ve both sold tens of millions of albums, and they’ve both won multiple Grammy and Gospel Music Association awards. But somehow, up until recently, the pair had only shared the stage together once.

“It was sometime in the early ’90s in Los Angeles,” Grant says.

“And that’s it. That was the only time we’d been onstage together.”

But that’s all changed now, because Chapman and Grant are co-headlining their first-ever joint tour, which will make a stop at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena this Sunday. The two will be onstage together for the entire show, and they’ll be playing songs from their entire careers.

The tour grew out of a joint show at the famed Bluebird Café in Nashville, which went well enough that both performers felt the time was right.

“We’d wanted to do something for a long time,” Grant says. “The challenge is to try to put together an evening that would make someone want to spend their hard-earned money

to come be entertained. We thought this would be a good package. We’ll be onstage together the whole time, tossing it back and forth. We decided to do songs from every decade that we’ve made music, which was kind of nice. There just aren’t that many artists you can travel the same timeline with, especially when it’s a long timeline. So we’re just going to reminisce and enjoy each other’s company.”

The set-list required Grant to go back through her catalog, which includes multimillion-selling albums like “Heart in Motion” and “House of Love,” and she said that revisiting the songs was an interesting process.

“My first thought is usually, ‘Woo, that note is high!’ she says with a laugh. “And then of course production values change and tastes change. I think going back and listening to material you recorded a long time ago, what you remember is the experience of recording it. That’s the great thing about music is that it becomes the

Heard it in a love song Band of Lovers duo spins unabashedly sentimental music

Just to get this out of the way, yes, the New York duo Band of Lovers are in a romantic relationship, and yes, their 2015 debut fulllength album, “The Coast,” is at least in part about that relationship. But this isn’t Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours” we’re talking about.

What singer/guitarist Dave Strumfeld and singer/ukulele player Sabina Beachdell have actually created is an album that bursts with hope, optimism and joy. Musically, it’s damn near irresistible. The duo’s intertwined vocal harmonies are precise and exuberant, the sighing strings are an orchestral-pop lover’s dream, and the songs tumble one after the other through addictive choruses and effervescent arrangements.

The lyrics, by Beachdell, don’t have an ounce of cynicism in them. Even in the sadder moments, there’s always a glimmer that things will get better. It’s unabashedly sentimental, and the album makes no apologies for it. In many ways, it’s the kind of guileless, romantic indie-pop that they don’t make any more, at least not since the early days of Belle & Sebastian.

The album’s bright disposition (and its subject matter) comes both from Beachdell and Strumfeld’s relationship and from their first extensive tour after the release of an EP in 2013.

“Most of those songs were written in the first six months to a year of us being on the road,” Beachdell says. “And there was a very strong hopeful optimism during that time. We really embraced it and lived it day to day. So all the songs came out of that hopeful place. In the songs, whenever something sad or painful happens, there’s still that hope.”

But she’s also quick to point out that the album isn’t necessarily an autobiography. “It’s kind of a blend of the story that we were living out and stories we were hearing from people we were meeting,” she says. “We heard a lot of stories on the road.”

The band is playing a show at the Spinning Jenny in Greer on Friday, along with local favorites Darby Wilcox, Annie Elie and Twin Courage, but rather than bringing along the four-piece string section, pianist and bass player on their album, Band of Lovers will play this show as a trio.

“Everything is stripped down,” Strumfeld says. “I play guitar, Sabine plays ukulele, and we’re touring with a drummer, so everything kind of comes down to how we can arrange those instruments, and three voices. There’s a lot of emphasis on the range and dynamics of those three instruments and what they can do. And it’s surprisingly full. I think the energy of the way we play it live, that covers anything that’s potentially taken away by not having the strings or the other instruments on the album.”

In fact, that approach is really a throwback to how the duo wrote the songs in the first place.

“The songs started acoustic, with just the two of us playing, so the heart of the songs is just the two of us.” Strumfeld says. “So whatever we add on top of that is a bed of music that surrounds and points at the melody and the lyrics. It changed more when we recorded the album because we had the opportunity to make it lush and full.”

Buyer beware 2 TV series on choosing your leaders well The Democratic primary is Saturday, so I thought I’d continue a political theme for one more week – but instead of giving you some must-see movies, here are two must-see TV series that are only available for streaming.

“House of Cards” Created by Beau Willimon Two Saturdays ago, an airplane was flying over downtown Greenville pulling a banner that read, “Underwood for President.” On Main Street beside Grill Marks, a display was set up with the same sentiment.

If you have no idea what that’s about, this was a publicity stunt for the Netflix Original series, “House of Cards.” The series is a remake of a British show by the same name that is based on a book with the same title.

If you aren’t familiar with it, now is a good time to binge-watch the first three seasons, because the fourth season will be released March 4.

Although it takes place in Washington, D.C., it’s about a power-hungry congressman from Gaffney named Frank Underwood. There are a number of references in the series that Greenvillians will appreciate. The Greenville Drive is mentioned in one episode and Furman in another. One entire episode is about the Gaffney Peachoid and another takes place at a military school called the Sentinel, which is clearly based on the Citadel. There is good

Ever wondered what the world would be like if the Axis powers had won World War II? This series, produced by Amazon Studios, is based on a 1963 book of the same title by Philip K. Dick.

It takes place in 1962 in a United States that has been taken over by the Nazis and the Japanese. The Nazis control the eastern part of the country and the Japanese control the western part. It’s about a group of rebels who are smuggling 16 mm films across the country to get them to someone known only as “the man in the high castle.”

Currently, only one season has been released on Amazon Prime, but a second season is in the works. The series is produced

clandrum@communityjournals.com Not many roles would suit Trev Furlong more perfectly than Charlie in the Mill Town Players’ production of “The Foreigner.”

“There are very few plays set in the South that require an English actor,” he said. “It’s a Southern comedy but it’s not the standard Dixie-dearly-departed Southern comedy. To me, it’s close to an English farce. But it’s more than lots of doors opening and closing.”

Englishmen, Charlie and Froggy, who are guests at a fishing lodge in a rural Georgia county.

Charlie is shy and depressed about his sick wife. He doesn’t want to talk to anybody, so his friend claims he’s a foreigner who doesn’t understand English. Taking the explanation that he’s a non-English speaker as fact, the lodge’s guests begin revealing their secrets, including a Ku Klux Klan plot to take the lodge away from its sweet old lady owner.

“It’s a comedy you have to think about,” Furlong said. “It’s a funny show, but there’s a moral message. The goodies triumph and the baddies are sent away with their tails between their legs.”

Furlong was a founding member of the

Monck Street Theatre in Central London, a now-defunct theater that specialized in comedy and farce. He played roles on England’s equivalent to off-Broadway.

Furlong’s wife, whom he met online, is from Williamston and he moved to the Upstate after 25 years on the London Metropolitan Police Force.

Furlong, who has acted at Centre Stage and the Electric City Playhouse, said he is a fan of Will Ragland, the founder of Mill Town Players, and jumped at the chance to become involved in one of the theater’s productions.

“Each production gets better,” he said.

“This cast is just so solid.” In addition to Furlong, the cast includes MJ Maurer, Hannah Smith, David LaPage, Dave DiG-

The production opens this weekend and runs through March 13.

They lined up at 9 a.m., teeth chattering from the cold and the nerves. They wore hoodies over jerseys and clutched hand-warmers in their pockets. On any other Saturday morning, the preteen kids would be still in their pajamas with a bellyful of pancakes. On this cold morning, they were about to show a line of Northwood Little League volunteer coaches just what they could do on the baseball diamond.

It’s been six months since Northwood’s All-Star team went to the 2015 Little League World Series. It was the first time in a half-century that a team from South Carolina had made it to Williamsport. Now, on a cold February day, the Taylors-based league was ready to start picking its teams for the 2016 spring season.

Last weekend, all of the new squads started their practices, repeating the same moves over and over again – throwing, catching, hitting – until they got in enough repetitions (or reps) to make it all feel natural. That’s the point: to do something so many times that the kid doesn’t have to think; he just does.

Both of my sons play at Northwood. I’ve spent more nights at Corey Burns Park in the last four years than I’ve spent anywhere else outside of my home. This year, we had to get our registration forms in early, because there was a very real chance the league’s teams would fill earlier than ever.

Northwood Little League President Jody Parker said registrations are up by 10 percent since last spring. There is little question why.

“In addition to the increased publicity surrounding our historic Little League World Series team last year, we feel that our numbers increase this year is also related to an increased popularity of youth baseball in our area,” Parker said.

Though there are hundreds of players at Northwood and thousands more around South Carolina, the reality is that over the entire Southeast region fewer than 20 kids will get to go to Williamsport. For most of the kids, the season will be over by Memorial Day, and they will be left with a dozen or so games’ worth of memories.

That is, however, not all they will take away from their spring at the ballpark, because for every fundamental they learn about the perfect swing or stepping into their throws, they learn a half-dozen life lessons they might not get anywhere else.

I’d love for my sons to be great baseball players, but more than that, I want them to be great young men, and the more life lesson reps they put in, the closer they get to that goal.

On any given baseball day, my boys learn discipline, listening skills and respect. They learn to accept their own mistakes and have empathy for others who mess up. They learn to recognize talent in other people and improve their own abilities along the way. They learn how to work as part of a team while still being accountable for their own actions. They learn how to fight hard and fairly, and they learn how to shake hands – win or lose – when it’s all done and dusted.

They do these things over and over again, as many times in one season of baseball as they might get five years of listening to me. Yes, I’d love for my sons to be great baseball players, but more than that, I want them to be great young men, and the more life lesson reps they put in, the closer they get to that goal. That is, the more times they act like great young men, the easier it will be for them to do it without having to think about it.

Even in the likely event my kids never have the chance to play on ESPN, it would all be worth it. At the end of each cold night of practice and after the final out of some hot Saturday afternoon game in May, my boys will have learned a lot more about life than they have baseball, and that’s just fine with me.
