Come downtown and ride the trolley! The free service operates weekly from Thursday through Sunday. On Thursdays and Fridays, it runs from 6 to 11 PM; on Saturday, hop aboard from 10 AM to 11 PM; and on Sunday afternoons, experience it from 1-8PM. Typically, you’ll find the trolleys traversing downtown from West Earle Street on the north end to Fields Street on the south end. The new route now includes Heritage Green. The trolleys stop at any intersection when hailed by a rider. The trolleys will seat 35 passengers and is expected to complete their route in about 45 minutes.

Outdoor market hops with crafts, food and plenty of fun. Lots of big cities have little outdoor markets. So Jac Oliver – champion of all things local – decided to plant one in Greenville, too. It’s grown into Holiday Flea – a bi-annual marketplace for local artisans, food vendors, musicians and more – and the next one’s slated for Saturday, Dec. 14, from 11am-3pm in the gathering space outside Swamp Rabbit Café & Grocery. Drive to 205 Cedar Lane Road or get there by bike, skates or sneakers via the Greenville Health System Swamp Rabbit Trail. “Holiday Flea is a fun, outdoor market with a little something for everyone,” says Oliver who, along with Mary Walsh, co-owns the popular Swamp Rabbit Café & Grocery. “It’s kind of eclectic, you know, with a diverse offering that’s all handmade and local.” Oliver expects some 30 vendors, with goods such as handcrafted jewelry, visual artwork, pottery and vintage memorabilia. Food artisans will be there, too, and the Café plans to serve up specialty hot chocolate – think Black Mountain cocoa with cayenne pepper – along with holidaythemed pastries. “We work to make it a good mix,” Oliver says. With a Flea once in the Spring and again in the Winter, “every time we’ve done this it’s drawn really big crowds.” The interesting variety of local artists and craftsmen makes Holiday Flea an ideal venue for truly unique Christmas gifts. The vendor list, which is still being finalized, features individual jewelers, potters, painters and photographers – all from this area – as well as:

You can walk around, look at all the arts and crafts, listen to music, eat some good food.” Swamp Rabbit Cafe & Grocery serves up scratch-made baked goods; sustainable coffee products; local and organic dairy products; and seasonal and organic produce. The company strives to source at least half of its inventory from a 150-mile radius. “We are committed to creating a stronger community,” Oliver says. “So in addition to locally-sourced food, we want to provide a place where people can meet and interact.” That’s why, in addition to Holiday Flea, Swamp Rabbit Café & Grocery hosts a monthly Local Food Potluck during the warmer months, so Saturday, Dec. 14 customers can try out new recipes with local 11am-3pm ingredients. do downtown A Tale of Two (Make that Three) Nutcrackers Local ballet companies stage Tchaikovsy’s holiday classic It’s the best of times for anyone who adores The Nutcracker. During this, the season of light, there are three – yes, three – local productions of Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet on tap. Carolina Ballet Theatre, International Ballet, then Greenville Ballet take to the stage on successive December weekends to present their varied versions of this 121-year-old holiday favorite. The worst part is having to pick which one to see. So if you’re having a dickens of a time deciding, read on for a little direction. “Watching The Nutcracker is a wonderful way to start the holidays – it’s something families can share year after year,” says Hernan Justo, artistic director of Carolina Ballet Theatre. He believes Greenville is richer for its abundance of Christmastime ballets as well as plays and musical productions. “We are all so lucky to be part of this community’s holiday traditions.” While most of us today cannot imagine December without Clara, the Prince, the Sugar Plum Fairy and all the rest, it wasn’t always this way. “One thing you must know about The Nutcracker is this: the first performance (in front of Czar Alexander III in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1892) was a failure,” Justo says. With music by Peter Tchaikovsky and choreography by Marius Petipa, the ballet’s debut – though deemed delightful by the Czar – was panned by the audience and critics. The Nutcracker eventually came to America, where it was re-vamped in the 1950s by the acclaimed George Balanchine; his version led others to their own variations and prompted the Christmas ballet’s popularity. “So today,” explains Justo, “everyone may have their own interpretation.”

For Carolina Ballet Theatre, that means transforming a Russian jewel into a gem that’s genuine Greenville. Its all-new version, The Nutcracker: Once Upon a Time in Greenville, takes the Peace Center stage Dec. 6-8 with an all-local cast of 190 dancers. “In ballet, we tell a story without any words,” Justo says, so performers must connect to the audience via choreography, music and scenery. “I thought, wouldn’t it be interesting to create a Greenville version of The Nutcracker, a ballet that really belongs to all of us here.” To that end, Carolina Ballet has partnered with Redhype and ARC Document Solutions to design and digitally print backdrops that incorporate local elements into the scenery. The Snow Scene, for example, takes place in Falls Park with the trademark Liberty Bridge in the background; Candy Land is set amidst Main Street. Greenville’s iconic Mice on Main make an appearance in Act II. International Ballet, meanwhile, believes in staying true to the tale’s Russian roots with its production of Nutcracker: The Classical Masterpiece Dec. 13-15 at the Peace Center. “We present a very traditional, very Russian Nutcracker,” says Lena Forster, executive director of International Ballet. “We focus on doing things in the classical sense, technically and artistically.” With Vlada Kysselova at the artistic helm, this classical rendition features guest artists Lamin Pereira, Dancers from the International Ballet perform The Nutcracker: The Classical Masterpiece Melissa Gelfin and

Telmo Moreira of Orlando Ballet along with Stephen Nakagawa, a graduate of the SC Governor’s School for the Arts who now performs with Ballet West II. These principals share the stage with some 70 Upstate dancers. Keeping faithful to a 121-year-old fairy tale never gets old, Forster says. “It’s always fresh. Even if you’ve seen it before, you’ll be enchanted by this beautiful, classic production – the beautiful music, the magnificent costumes and sets, the artistic choreography, it’s all just stunning.” Greenville Ballet Director Andrew Kuharsky agrees. “Ours is a traditional production,” says Kuharsky, who finds cultural and artistic value in sticking to the 1890s version. “We want to preserve the quaintness and historical feeling.” Greenville Ballet’s Nutcracker – which comes to Furman’s McAlister Auditorium Dec. 21, with a student performance Dec. 19 – features 90 local dancers of all ages. Guest artists are Carol Tang and Jose Gonzalez of The Island Moving Company, in the roles of Sugarplum Fairy and The Cavalier, and Daynier Rivero of Ballet Spartanburg as Trepak and Soldier Doll.

This is Greenville Ballet’s 30th season staging The Nutcracker, and Kuharsky says the beloved story never loses its appeal. “We are preserving a tradition,” he says, “and passing the love of a great ballet from one generation to the next.” With Carolina Ballet Theatre adding a little local flavor while Greenville Ballet and International Ballet keep to more classical Nutcrackers, Forster finds infinite appeal in Greenville’s artistic diversity. “There is something for everyone here,” she says. “It is great to have so many options.”

Drawings take place December 23, with winners notified via email. Holiday Happening ambassadors will be stationed along Main Street on the weekends – you’ll recognize them by their blue Visit Greenville SC aprons – to answer questions, assist shoppers with directions and hand out additional passports. Complimentary weekend parking is available at the Richardson Street Garage, which is free on Friday from 6-9pm, Saturday from 6am-9pm, and Sunday all day. A flat fee of $3 is payable upon entry after 9pm on Friday and Saturday evenings. The West Washington Street Deck is free from 6pm-6am Monday through Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday.
