Holiday Open House Festivities mark traditional start to shopping season
B
lack Friday? Oh, ho, ho, no! Christmas shopping in the heart of Greenville always begins with a more colorful splash on the Sunday before Thanksgiving.
That’s the day set aside for the annual Augusta Road Holiday Open House—November 18th this year—and it truly is the most wonderful time of the year. This not-to-be-missed tradition runs from 1-5pm at stores and shopping centers throughout the Augusta Road Business District. It’s an afternoon filled with family fun for all ages, attracting shoppers eager to get a jump on their Christmas lists as well as children even more eager to get this year’s first glimpse of Santa. “This is always such a festive event,” says Alex Hyman of Phil Hyman Photography, who is hosting a very special guest during the Open House. “It’s a chance for friends and neighbors to get into the holiday spirit together … it’s like a big, community party.” Presented by the Augusta Road Business Association (ARBA), this yearly extravaganza features in-store specials and door prizes at participating businesses—oftimes the best one-day deals of the season. What’s more, attendees enjoy a chance to win an Augusta Road Shopping Spree; simply pick up an entry card at any participating ARBA member location, then get it stamped at every business you visit during the Open House. The more stamps you collect, the more times your name goes in the drawing. Prizes range from $200-$800. Shopping, of course, is only half the fun. Special activities designed to raise holiday spirits include live music, carriage rides, refreshments, kids activities such as face painting, free nail painting for girls under 12, ornament making and so much more. Santa is expected to make appearances at a couple places. Visit with the Jolly Old Elf at Lewis Plaza and Augusta Commons—parents, bring a camera! Also at Augusta Commons, little ones can write out their wish lists with Santa’s helpers, who’ll bring the letters back to the North Pole; every child is assured of a personal response. The folks at Hyman Photography have invited Santa in for Story Time— complete with milk and cookies—from 2-3pm. “We are really excited,” says Hyman, who is busy putting together goodie bags for kids as well as their parents. A free City Trolley runs during the festivities, making it easy to get from one shopping center to the next. Because giving is the reason for the season, ARBA is collecting canned foods for Samaritan House during the Open House. Look for drop-off locations at each shopping center.

A Time for Giving Back
ARBA supports Meals on Wheels & Samaritan House Talk about a can-do attitude—members of the Augusta Road Business Association are dedicated to helping their neighbors. “We get so much support from this community,” says Marty Garrison of Paisley & Paper, “so it’s important for businesses, in turn, to support those who are less fortunate.” During this, the season of plenty, ARBA is collecting canned goods for Samaritan House of Greenville, whose mission includes a food pantry that provides groceries to 500+ families a month as well as a weekend snack program serving disadvantaged school children. Collection boxes are placed in various stores all along Augusta Road, including Paisley & Paper. “We are delighted to participate in this food drive,” says Garrison. Requested donations include tuna, stews, soups, fruits, pasta, rice, evaporated milk, vegetables and mac n’cheese. “The Samaritan House is a fellow Augusta Road organization,” says ARBA President Kelly Odom, “and we feel it is important to help neighboring charities who are making the holidays a little brighter for those in the community who might need some help.” For more information about Samaritan House, visit www.thesamaritanhous.org. Lightson Call it a light-hearted competition, with merchants all along Augusta Road vying for bragging rights as the yuletide’s best and brightest. Lights on Augusta is a Christmas decorating contest amongst offices, retailers and service providers within the Augusta Road Business Association to see who has the best-decked business or storefront. The winner is chosen by popular vote from the community. “Oh, it’s just so much fun,” says Wanda Ponthieux. She and her husband Mike, proprietors of Ponthieux’s Jewelry Design Studio, crafted a jewelry-themed Christmas tree—complete with diamond-ring ornaments—and festooned their windows with a glittering array of lights that earned them the popular vote in 2011. Second place went to Music Together of Greenville; third place, Foxfire Gallery & Kitchen Shops. “Everyone decorates their stores really well,” Ponthieux says. “The contest is a cool way to encourage people to notice us.” Marty Garrison is a newcomer to the Augusta Road Business Association—her

Paisley & Paper opened just a dozen weeks ago—but she’s already gotten into the spirit by decorating the paper goods store with a peppermint motif. Most other businesses are keeping mum—nobody wants to give away any ideas—but expect business-related themes and humorous holiday takes along with more traditional designs. So come see for yourself, then play favorites! The public is encouraged to visit each participating business and voice an opinion via online voting at www.onlyonaugusta. com. The poll opens December 1 and runs through New Years Eve. The Lights on Augusta victor gets bragging rights for a year. The rest of us, meanwhile, get to enjoy the festive atmosphere throughout Greenville’s most interesting business district. Though registration for the Lights on Augusta contest is still under way, the list includes Ponthieux’s Jewelry Design Studio, The Embassy Flowers & Nature’s Gifts, Paisley & Paper, Wisteria Salon & Spa, Harrison Lighting, Gage’s, Wireless Communications, The Pickwick Pharmacy & Soda Fountain, Reedy River Dentistry, Ten Thousand Villages, Foxfire Gallery & Kitchen Shops, L’s on Augusta, The Grey Goose, Kate Carlyle, Phil Hyman Photography, The Elephant’s Trunk, Roots, Antiques on Augusta, A Finer Fit, Denim Salon by Beija Flor and Consign & Design on Augusta.
