Notes From Home

"Summertime, And the livin' is easy Fish are jumpin' And the cotton is high." "Summertime" Lyrics by DuBose Heyward and Ira Gershwin

W

Contact me at lgreenlaw@communityjournals.com or call 864.679.1200 and leave me a message. I always welcome your comments and suggestions.

e are definitely all about easy living in this summertime issue. So much bold color, tips about what’s on trend for outdoor living, for sprucing up your backyard pool, spectacular additions to your birthday, anniversary, or any type party that is associated with a number – that’s a big hint! – and of course, homes to visit. Speaking of color, there’s a home whose exterior is a grand French Country-style with exquisite landscaping, but open the door and you’re met with an explosion of joyous, well-orchestrated color. Another home has been updated extensively on the inside to match its owner’s style of living, while remaining its classic Willy Ward designed style on the exterior. The owners are certainly going to be doing some easy living in their backyard oasis this summer. Then there’s a home that is so “smart” that its owners don’t have much to worry about when they need to leave for a few hours or even a few days. Every essential need for running the home can be managed from afar. Isn’t technology amazing? Have you visited the South Carolina Botanical Garden at Clemson? If not, you will surely want to once you’ve read all about it in our article, “South Carolina’s Backyard.” Load your kids in the car, your spouse, your parents and anyone visiting this summer and you’ll find something on the 295acre grounds that will enchant them all. It’s truly a treasure. We’ve discovered another Detour for you to explore; have a wonderful essay about fostering a dog; information about what not to grow in your yard if you have a pet that spends time there; an artist profile that not only highlights the art of this very talented individual, but touches on the way she has helped fellow artists have a space to create. There’s more and you should go explore to find all of the wonderful pages that our writers, photographers and graphic creators have put together for you. I thank each and every one of them for the inspired work they contribute. Enjoy!

Yard Dog

At the intersection of plant and pet

C

/ by Emily Neal /photography by Chelsey Ashford

Can gardening and pet ownership co-exist? Graham Kimak, principal of Graham Kimak Landscape Designs (and part owner of The Noble Dog Hotel) thinks it’s not only possible, but highly achievable. Dogs will develop their own paths around the yard and Graham suggests designing around these already established routes. “Plan your garden with your pet’s needs and behavior in mind,” he says. “Start by researching your pet’s breed and understand how active your dog will be.” Consider a strategy of materials; those that are dogfriendly such as grass and mulch and those that are not like stone or gravel, which can deter a dog away from a specific area. Pea gravel is an ideal material to line as a 3-foot border between yard and fence. These small, rocky pieces are uncomfortable when they get stuck in paws and can deter a dog from digging. While asphalt could be considered dog-friendly, remember that darker colors soak up more sun so if it’s too hot for bare feet, it’s too hot for puppy paws. “Use lighter colored concrete materials or pavers if you know your dog will be spending lots of summer days on the space,” Kimak says. Once you have your landscaping materials determined move onto greenery and ground cover, which will likely receive plenty of traction from a pet so think sturdy, low-growing creepers like Liriopi, Asiatic Jasmine and Mondo Grass. When picking plants, Kimak says to select hearty plants as well as soft plants with sturdy branches. For example, while a Holly bush has sturdy branches, its prickly leaves are harmful if chewed by a pet. You may not want to imagine your dog munching on your favorite plants, but it’s worth considering when purchasing new additions for the garden. For a flowering option, Forsythias and Butterfly Bush are ideal choices since a damaged branch can be trimmed and will easily grow back. Kimak also suggests making the investment to size up initial plantings. Bigger plants establish more quickly than ones in smaller pots and, in turn, will be able to handle

SPRING 2018

_opener_InBloom.indd 29

some trampling. Avoid installing in-ground flowerbeds; instead opt for raised beds, garden boxes and large or grouped containers to add visual interest. While most of us are not gardening specifically for our pets, any pet parent will attest that keeping them in mind is important for both you and your animal’s safety and happiness. Don’t forget to seasonally proof your yard for pet dangerous insects, such as fire ants. If you spray your yard for mosquitos, keep your pets inside for the same suggested amount of time as humans (about 30 minutes to avoid ingesting air-borne pesticides) and take a look around your back yard for openly stored yard chemicals, which should be stored up on a shelf in a shed or garage. Lastly, plan for areas of shade for hot summer days and a good source of water for your pet-- utilitarian or ornamental in nature-- as well as plenty of waterproof toys to toss about. By keeping these simple strategies in mind during your next trip to the store, you can create a backyard oasis that will stay lush well into the dog days of summer.

This-Not-That

Many a common garden staple can be toxic or intolerant for dogs to ingest. In the South, we love our lilies and azalea, just two of many plants that are better suited for the front yard rather than the back where our pups can spend a lot of downtime. But many options exist for gorgeous bed pairings including these attractive and pet-friendly substitutes. For a full list of non-toxic and toxic plants visit www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control . DESIGNING AN OPEN AND INVITING HOME: This home’s transformation was truly exciting to design and watch become a reality. We opened this home’s floor plan by relocating the stairs and removing some walls. We created a more defined entrance by adding a large two story portico with matching interior foyer and second floor balcony. We employed barrel-vaulted ceilings in several places to help tie the renovation together. Take a look at our blog to see some before photos and learn more about this gorgeous home and fun renovation! The Collection Off the Shelf: book reviews

Epic Novels for Epic Trips / by A.K. Freeland / photography by Eli Warren

W

ith a great novel at the ready, the adventure starts as soon as bags are checked. I put as much planning into what I’ll read on a trip as I do the destination itself, saving big reads (in size or impact) for significant pockets of time. Getting to know characters in a different culture and place deepens my imagination for the destination. The characters, their hearts and their dilemmas, I remember long after the last page. I recall visually stunning landscapes I have yet to physically visit. Epic novels take you to a place you haven’t been with people you haven’t met, but will know well after.

Head West

Go South, way South

You may have seen the mini-series, but you may not know that Larry McMurtry’s novel Lonesome Dove won a Pulitzer. Former Texan Rangers embark on a cattle herding journey from Lonesome Dove to Montana providing the backdrop for the end of the old west, the hardships of travel and the friendship between Augustus and Captain W.F. Call. Their partnership is marked by differences leading to harsh, hilarious and tender exchanges. By the end of the novel I had met two people that I admired so much, I have thought about how they may solve a problem at hand.

More page relisher than page tuner, A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry weaves a stunning tale. Mrs. Dina Dalal, a Parsi widow and two Hindu tailors, Ishvar and Omprakash, create an accidental family while experiencing “The Emergency” in India in the 1970’s. Sensory details offer understanding of a period in India not often taught on our side of the pond. You picture these characters as they meet, sew, love and age; be prepared for humor, tenderness, unparalleled respect and heartbreak.

Nothing makes time pass like a tale of forbidden love, familial protocol, war, food and magical realism. Originally published in 1989 (translated into English in 1992), Like Water For Chocolate by Laura Esquirel is part legend, part soap opera. Beautiful Tita is forbidden to marry her love, Pedro, because she is the youngest daughter and must stay in the family home to care for her mother according to tradition. Each chapter begins as a recipe with Tita conveying passion, sadness and longing through the food she prepares.

Travel North, but don’t stop there Covering race relations across three continents may sound ambitious, but Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie pulls it off in the sensational Americanah. This novel follows Nigerian native Ifemelu-- a lifestyle blogger-- as she lives in Princeton, NJ and travels to Trenton to have her hair braided. It is in the salon that she recounts her life in Nigeria. Her outsider perspective is enlightening and haunting. Ifemelu is both edgy and funny while exploring race relations in the US, Nigeria, her upbringing and her return home. This book is big and artfully spans a large territory, both in geography and understanding.

ools are a welcome retreat from the heat of summer, but even they can look wilted after years of family fun. What can you do to refresh your pool to make it more functional and attractive? Let’s hear from an expert who not only digs new pools but also refreshes them to add years more of enjoyment.

vinyl, plaster or even tile. Age and chemical wear are the two primary causes for degradation but sometimes it's just aesthetics that drives the change. Fading and etching are the telltale signs, rough sandy surface for Gunite pools or brittle vinyl that has lost its supple flexibility. For vinyl pools, most owners change their liner after 7-10 years while gunite pool owners see a longer life span from 10-15 years. Ceramic waterline tile can be replaced in a Gunite pool without re-plastering the entire surface of the pool if the owner wants to jazz things up a bit, but it is more cost effective to do both at the same time.

Q: What options are available for updating the surrounding deck? A: That depends a lot on the existing deck materials and condition, but generally a variety of surface applications can be applied to improve the look of a dated wooden deck. Most surface applications, however, require regular maintenance and sealing adding to the total cost of the investment year over year. Cement, natural stone, travertine and composite paver systems are the better choice; both for their beautiful appearance and minimal maintenance.

Q: Should I consider updating my filtration equipment? A: Absolutely! So many advances in

technology have been made for swimming pool filtration systems it's incredible. Variable speed pumps will save you a bundle on electricity along with low voltage LED underwater lights and saline disinfectant systems that make chlorine from sodium chloride (table salt). The operating savings puts money directly back in your pocket and can, over time, pay you back in full for the upgrade.

Beds for the Modern Dog South Carolina furniture maker believes in good design for all /by Anne Wolfe Postic

J

osh Cox opens the door of his workshop with the wide-open smile of a man who loves what he does. His workshop, home to Bricker & Bark (and its sister company Bricker & Beam), is located in the growing community of artists, restaurateurs and eclectic businesses of West Columbia. The large shop is filled with works in progress, experiments with new materials and the delicious smell of fresh wood. Cox makes heirloom-quality furniture, defined by expert craftsmanship, a clean aesthetic and the warmth of natural materials. In one corner, a stack of dog beds hand-crafted from sustainably-sourced local hardwood await delivery to homes where beloved dogs enjoy the same style as their human families.

36 _ at Home

_crafted.indd 36

Cox learned woodworking techniques as a child, working alongside his grandfather on his Ohio farm, where he visited several times a year. “As we neared the farm, we passed what we came to call ‘Bricker Hill,’ the last hill before we arrived and the point at which our excitement for adventure started. It’s that anticipation and excitement to explore and create that inspired our name,” says Cox. That taste for adventure still drives Cox to conceive and design new pieces for humans and canines alike. As he grew older, furniture making became a convenient hobby, a way to get the high quality, modern furniture he preferred. When he and his wife were in search of a coffee table he realized he could simply make it himself; so he did. That coffee table garnered interest from friends and Cox found himself

cutting out earlier and earlier from his bartending job to finish custom projects. “The business kept snowballing and I realized it was time to make furniture full-time.” Bricker & Beam was born. When a lovable labradoodle named Coltrane joined the family, dog beds to suit a modern aesthetic were in short supply (nonexistent, really). Cox felt that familiar excitement and went to the workshop to build something beautiful. “My goal is to create furniture that blends contemporary, clean lines with the warmth of natural materials,” says Cox. And, furniture for dogs should be no exception; after all, canine companions can’t articulate their own style, so they need guidance.

38 _ at Home

_crafted.indd 38

Bricker & Bark beds are built for dogs whose homes reflect their owners’ taste. They come in two different styles. The Winston, a platform style, rests on handturned Mid-Century legs. The Frye has raised edges on three sides. Both beds come with foam cushions, covered in removable waterproof canvas or premium faux leather. Where overstuffed, garishly colored dog beds are a jarring interruption in the home, Bricker & Bark beds add warmth and style to any room. “Building furniture isn’t just a business for us, but a passion,” says Cox. His passion for design, heirloom-quality work and natural materials shows in every piece.

Washed in Water

The art of shibori and cyanotype feels fresh for summer /by Beth Brown Ables /photography by Will Crooks

What makes the combination of blue and white so appealing in décor? From Blue Willow platters to French Toile to classic Seersucker, the color scheme of blue paired with white continues to anchor spaces in classic and refreshing ways. But modern tastes or even our tried-and-true classics could use a dose of the organic lines found in the current trend of shibori fabric, also known as dipped-dyed indigo. This isn’t your summer camp tie dye project; the ancient art is less about the kitsch and more about the chic. It’s popping up in high-end design for its graphic two-toned styling which works in a variety of spaces, living rooms to bedrooms, porches to dinner tables. Pairing a shibori throw with framed cyanotypes (sun-exposed photographs) is a match made in blue and white heaven. The effect is simple and instant, creating a calming, natural element in the home. And, it just so happens to be an easy and satisfying DIY project.

Cyanotype

How To:

A photographic printing process producing a cyan-blue print. Employing the same chemicals used in architectural blueprints, you can create blue and white art pieces utilizing found elements, sunshine and water. It’s simple, but with magical results.

Think through the layout of a finished piece and then remove a piece of treated paper, avoiding direct sun exposure until the last minute. Arrange your objects as desired. Place a piece of glass or acetate over top to keep objects in place and to avoid creating shadows. Wait until the blue tinted paper turns almost white and then remove the glass and objects. Rinse in cold water for a minute and allow your cyanotype to dry on a towel. The blue will darken as the image processes. Frame cyanotypes in simple frames and hang in multiples.

You’ll need:

Pre-treated cyanotype or “sun print” paper Cold water with a few drops of lemon juice added (this intensifies the blue) Paper towels for drying Natural objects (flatter items work best) A sunny spot but even an overcast day will work nicely

Shibori

The ancient Japanese technique of folding, binding or tying fabric and dyeing it with indigo. Indigo has been used for dyeing cloth in various cultures for centuries. Because it is a natural, plant-based dye, indigo typically needs to be heated to become water-soluble. However, purchasing a kit provides you with prepared dye and fixatives, which can take the guesswork out of your project. In general terms, you’ll mix four gallons of warm water with the dye along with a reduction agent. Cover the container and wait at least twenty minutes or up to an hour.

You’ll need:

Rubber gloves (most kits come with a single pair, but you will definitely want more) 5 gallon plastic bucket with a lid Stir stick long enough to stir to the bottom of the container A plastic drop cloth to place your fabric on while it oxidizes Line to dry larger items

SUMMER 2018

36_Shibori.indd 41

How To: To prep your fabric to dye, you may use accordion folds, which will produce a fluid grid design or you may choose to simply dip dye your piece to form a gradient. Using 100% cotton is your best bet, but silk works beautifully too. Soak the folded cloth in water and then wring it out. After prepping your fabric, remove the foam— known as the “flower”— from the top of the liquid. You may be surprised to see that the liquid dye is a clear yellow or yellow/green. Don’t worry, that’s exactly what it should look like. The deep blue indigo color appears as the air oxidizes with the dye in the fibers. Dip your fabric, holding it under the surface for around 10 seconds, making sure the fabric can move freely around the dye vat. It will continue to oxidize as it dries. The blue will intensify and the dye will bleed a bit more into the fabric. Unfolding a dye project to hang on the line is a satisfying surprise.

He and his husband also streamlined their culinary curios in order to eliminate upper cabinets in the new design. Nick Carlson loves selling real estate, but has never been a fan of the tedious task of turning on lights and opening blinds to prep for a showing and then reversing that process all over again. “I would think, I just wasted 30 minutes of my day doing that. Why can’t it just do itself?” Carlson says. It turns out those things can do themselves and in Carlson’s Ben Street abode, now they do. Carlson, who is co-owner of Wilson Associates Real Estate, has owned the 1930s bungalow at the end of a quiet street off McDaniel Avenue for nearly 15 years. “We’ve always looked for something else, but have always come back because of location,” Carlson says. “We’ve got Cancer Survivors Park right there, the YMCA is right there and we’re 10 minutes from town. So we walk everywhere.” Not willing to let go of this prime location, Carlson and husband Derek Poland turned to local architect Matt Tindall to bring the bungalow up to date. “It was an old, 1930s house and it just didn’t live the way we live now,” Carlson says. “It was originally a three-bedroom, one-bath and we converted it to a onebedroom, 1 1/2 bath. It suits just our needs.”

The renovation converted unnecessary bedroom space into an enviable master closet and bathroom, added outdoor living space to both the front and back of the house and tricked out the modernized kitchen with luxury appliances. But the automation hacks are what make Carlson’s heart go pitter-patter. “We wanted something that was a smart house and we wanted a lock and leave situation as well,” Carlson says. “When we’re gone on trips, the house is on autopilot. All the blinds open and close, the lights turn on and off at certain hours. It’s just a wholely automated house.” Carlson opted for the Philips Hue lighting system, which can be controlled via smartphone as well as through a voice control device, like Amazon Alexa. This system allows full control over

the color and brightness of individual lights, one room or the entire house. Routines can be set to perform functions at the same time each day and a geolocation feature that turns lights on when Carlson’s phone connects to the home’s WiFi means they never come home to a dark house. Motion detection sensors in the laundry room automatically turn the lights on when someone walks in and off a minute after they walk out. The Hunter Douglas PowerView System offers similar control over the blinds. Carlson has routines set to wake the house up in the morning and put it to bed at night without his having to give it a second thought. “At 10:30 every night the lights start to dim themselves out, and at 11 they cut off completely,” he says.

The main living area features an energy-efficient Haiku fan from Big Ass Fans that works in tandem with the Nest thermostat to keep the home at the desired temperature while running the HVAC system less. The couple also installed an August Smart Lock that uses WiFi to provide secure keyless entry. Carlson says this comes in handy for grocery-laden hands and for letting guests and contractors in when he can’t be home. “You can just open the app and unlock your door from wherever you are,” he says. Even the grass gets in on the automation act thanks to a Rachio Smart Water System that dials into local weather reports to customize irrigation. Now that’s smart.

InnerCella Open Table: Reflections of Home

Good Day, Sunshine Fostering a rescue is part failure and part joy / by M. Linda Lee / illustrations by Tatjana Mai-Wyss

IN THE SAME WAY YOU NEVER FORGET YOUR FIRST LOVE, I’ll never forget our first foster dog. It was a decade ago when my husband Joe and I decided to foster a Golden Retriever. We had recently lost our beloved yellow Labrador Retriever of 14 years; after three months of grieving, I could no longer bear not having a dog in the house, but I knew that no other Lab could measure up to Cassie in my heart. So we turned to the Golden Retriever breed as the next best thing. After coming across Foothills Golden Retriever Rescue in my internet research, we put in our application to foster a Golden with the option to adopt, figuring fostering would give us a chance to make sure the new dog was a good fit for our family. We passed our phone interview and home visit with flying colors and waited for the rescue to place a dog with us. Knowing little about rescue, we envisioned our first foster as a gentle, eager-to-please Golden (traits for which this breed is known)

with whom we would immediately fall in love. I even came up with a name: Soleil (French for “sunshine”), as I felt our new dog would bring sunshine into our lives to brighten the shadow of profound sadness that had fallen over us after Cassie’s passing. Unbeknownst to us, however, the rescue had pegged us to foster a high-spirited, yearold stray named Hayden, who had taken up residence in a wheelbarrow in someone’s yard in a Greenville suburb. A kind family was putting out food and water for the dog, who was happiest having little to do with humans. Hayden, like any rescue, revealed bits of his story through his behavior. The first evening after I brought him home, the dog met Joe at the door, growling. Distrustful of men… check. Fearful of strangers… check. I discovered more of his history one night when Joe was out. I was preparing my dinner on the kitchen counter, and went into the adjoining room to turn on the TV. When I looked back, Hayden had his front paws on the counter. “Hayden,” I exclaimed, not in an angry tone, but with surprise. His response was to immediately run to the back door, where he curled into a ball on the doormat

and blinked his eyes repeatedly. He was, it was clear, expecting me to hit him. He was equally taken aback by my response: I burst into tears and hugged him. The thought that someone had mistreated this sweet dog broke my heart. I have never met a smarter dog, nor one with as much energy as this young pup. He would retrieve a tennis ball for hours and he ran like a deer. Our large fenced backyard was a cage to him. On a walk, despite our efforts with positive training and a harness, he pulled like a sled dog. Apparently the call of the wild was overwhelming for him. As first-time fosters, we had no clue how to deal with a difficult dog. Still, we stumbled along, doing mostly all the wrong things in our best attempt to turn this wild thing into an adoptable pet. Hayden lived with us for three months, during which time he bonded with us and kept us entertained with his goofy antics.

us an elaborate series of steps to follow when introducing him to new people, but we never managed to alleviate his fear of strangers. Ultimately, Hayden proved too much dog for us, as Joe and I were both working fulltime and didn’t have the time or the skill to give Hayden the training he needed. His story does have a happy ending, though. Hayden was eventually adopted by a retired couple in North Carolina. To this day, I often think of him. In the intervening years, working with other fosters and our own dogs, Joe and I have learned much about canine behavior and training and I imagine Hayden has mellowed, yet there was a reason that our paths crossed all those years ago. If nothing else, I hope we taught Hayden that there are some humans out there worth trusting. And, he brought light and laughter into our lives when we needed it most. He will always be my Sunshine.

No matter Hayden’s shortcomings, we loved him and trusted him completely with us, anyway. With anyone else, he was dicey, at best. The trainer that the rescue worked with-- whose name, ironically, was Cat— gave

alterboro, SC, offers the best of small-town southern charm combined with the forward-looking vibe of a community embracing the 21st century with enthusiasm. Only three hours from Greenville, the county seat of Colleton County offers a destination that is certainly doable in a one-day stint but worthy of an overnight stay or even a weekend. You may want to time your arrival for coffee or lunch in the locally owned Old Bank Christmas & Bakery and dinner at Carmine’s Trattoria (operated by an Italian chef), makes for a lovely evening. Two charming bed and breakfast/inns in the downtown historic district— The Old Academy and Nine O’Seven— offer an elegant and comfortable stay, while a number of modern hotels dot the interstate exits. As a shopping destination for your home, the options similarly focus on the past and the present, both of which are reflected in the community’s showcase shopping

And if that were the only shopping venue available it alone would be worth the trip, but Walterboro is also appropriately known as a destination for antiques. Washington Street (in the center of town) is dotted with shops offering everything from original 19th-century case goods to mid-20thcentury kitsch, but even the outliers are solidly worth the effort. abriel Builders faced a 30,000 square foot dilemma. Their largest project to date was stalled in Lower Greenville County; the owner needed to move from the area and would sell the 50-acre property only partially constructed. They reached out to a family they believed would connect with its planned French Country style and hoped the process was not too far along to make it their own. Today Belle Terre is the story of a literal dream team of interior and exterior designers, builders and decorators who shaped an estate very true its name. Three requirements were set out by Belle Terre’s new owners. First, quality was of utmost importance, from supreme craftsmanship to authentic European elements and finishes. Second, a relaxed Southern style revolved around children, grandchildren, entertaining and outdoor living. Lastly, the finished home had to reflect an unbridled joie de vivre through color . . . lots and lots of color.

New Plans, New Challenges Once the owners closed on the property, residential designer Jack Thacker modified the original architectural plans. Luxury home builder Gabriel Builders was asked to return to the stalled construction site and from that point on, then-project manager Gabe Rubio devoted 100% of his time to the home, the company’s largest ever, in terms of square footage. The sheer scope of the undertaking (and the many firsts which came with (above) A keeping room off the highly textured kitchen pulls its color story from the wallpaper above a duo of islands. Shades of aqua don walls, woodwork and upholstery, the tone selected to marry with the greige of the kitchen cabinets. (left) Even corridors are awash in bold color, such as this classic pairing of emerald and quince, but amped by its repetition on millwork, ceilings and fabrications.

it) soon underscored the importance of dedication and collaboration. When asked what the home’s most challenging aspects were for a builder, Rubio cites the custom moldings for the home’s many radiuses. Several rooms were also designed with elongated groin vault ceilings which were built on the ground and then craned into place. Gabriel Builders partnered with Chad Brendle of the CB Group for the structural design process, which implemented the use of heavy steel and engineered lumber in all of the exterior walls, roof and floor system framing. “It’s as strong as you can possibly build without going to full steel or concrete,” says Rubio of a home so beautiful one might never guess it’s also a fortress. Despite the dozens of high-end homes his family business has built in the Upstate, Rubio was nevertheless impressed by one component in particular. “We do a lot of wine rooms,” he says, “but theirs is very large and has a separate tasting room next to it. They went to a lot of trouble to make it look like it’s completely underground, with poured concrete walls.”

with project manager Rubio on a daily basis for over a year. Through her bold interpretation, Belle Terre was infused with a panoply of artfully curated hues, textures and visual experiences.

Fusion of Old and New

True Colors The property now has nearly 30,000 square feet under roof, its components an enviable list that includes formal gardens, pool house, greenhouse, a ten-car garage, guest quarters, handsome barn, a custom treehouse, a stocked pond and grazing meadow. But even with all this, it’s the home’s riot of color which makes the biggest impression. Interior designer Mayme Baker of Mayme Baker Interiors was charged with ensuring the family’s personality remained front and center. “They possess happy hearts and generous spirits,” she explains. “My goal was to put together very personal spaces which would beautifully reflect their myriad of experiences; their big, fun personalities; and their general love of a colorful family life.” With input from her clients, Baker drove all the interior design decisions. “That meant colors, colors, and more colors,” says Rubio with a smile, of what he admits is the “most colorful house we’ve ever done.” Baker spoke

Baker enhanced Belle Terre’s Olde World aesthetic with the addition of beautiful antique French and English oil paintings, custom lighting by the venerable Neirmann Weeks Company and antique rugs. “A classic de Gournay silk wallcovering in the loggia was designed and hand-painted specifically for that space,” explains Baker. Other components-- notably the French blue exterior shutters and the rustic wine cellar-- also herald another time and place. But, Baker says that the owners were not afraid to mix in transitional and modern pieces to keep the aura from becoming too serious and stuffy. “We sought, at every opportunity, to inject humor, whimsy and wonder into the design.” Baker accomplished this with the use of unexpected finishes and materials like a fireplace screen that incorporates 12 colorful geode slices and multiple ceilings that are either wallpapered or painted. This dialed-in designer also successfully demonstrated mastery of two of her industry’s trickiest challenges: pattern mix and color play. “All the fabrics and trims are special-order designer goods,” she says. “We were careful to add subtle details with each application.” A theme of pairs and collections run through the estate as evidenced in these common spaces. An mirrored alcove is anchored by a pair of mounted sconces, a duo of upholstered chairs and sets of matching accessories. The gold hallway is home to a gallery wall of oil paintings bordered by sets of yellow silk drapes and an pair of Italian urns.

A Truly “Great” Outdoors A style icon of the Upstate, garden designer Dabney Peeples, was brought on board to collaborate with Baker so that the lines between indoors and out would blur. “To seamlessly meld the two, the genius of Dabney was essential to making that happen,” says Baker. “Dabney” is the principle at J. Dabney Peeples Design Associates, Inc. (part of The Collins Group family of companies). He meticulously designed every inch of the hardscape beyond the footprint of the home. Explaining that the French Country style of the home set the stage for formal gardens, Peeples also prioritized the family’s lifestyle and landed on the perfect mix of form and function. “Axis lines are the essence of formal design,” he explains. Peeples’ use of them gives Belle Terre’s many outdoor spaces a cohesiveness that would otherwise be lost. The eye is drawn from the home’s expansive covered porches, across a pool into the pool house and beyond its glass doors to a private garden adorned with custom seating beneath a defining ring of Italian cypress. The perpendicular axis line, cleverly marked with a pattern in the intricate brick and bluestone patio surface, is visually anchored on each side with a large Himalayan cedar. Beyond are the property’s tree house, a pond stocked with bass and bream and a new barn. Peeples, who lives on a gentleman’s farm of his own in Easley, can also take credit for the elegantly landscaped front entrance and fountain, a stunning Cotswold wall and woodland fire pit and the gracious pool, which was installed by Signature Pools. He

points out a solid limestone urn, 150 years old, which came from a garden in England. Custom planters he designed are the same lovely shade of French blue as the home’s shutters (they are filled seasonally by Joy Gregory’s company, Pretty Pots). Peeples collaborated with Jack Thacker on the pool house, its breezy French Caribbean style a reminder of many happy trips the family has made to the islands. It holds a bar for pool-goers and opposing window walls, which disappear bringing the outdoors in. Unvarnished teak chaise lounges add just the right touch of informality to the pool area. “It can be filled with happy children,” Peeples says with a knowing smile, “and less than 48 hours later be completely transformed for a black tie event.”

An extravagantly deep upper loggia, which spans the length of the home, overlooks the pool and guesthouse and provides perfect places to capture shade in cushioned seating.

Rotundas on several levels create unique spaces including this sitting area complete with curved fireplace and sweeping views.

Greenville couple turns historic house into a home of high design

The kitchen originally existed on the opposite end of the home, where the master bedroom is now. This space was expanded in the renovation to accommodate the two-chef kitchen Evans and Dooley required. A large piece from favorite local artist Tim Speaker makes a bold statement here.

“I can usually see a place and have an immediate vision,” says Michael Evans of his knack for home design. That wasn’t the case, however, with the Harcourt Drive home Evans shares with his husband, Jeffrey Dooley. Evans has planned and overseen a number of renovations during the nearly 40 years he’s called Greenville home, even tackling the construction side of things on a Vannoy Street bungalow, but this clinker brick Tudor-originally designed by Greenville architectural darling Willie Ward-- required a bit more thought. In fact, the couple almost passed on the home altogether. They had lived on Vannoy St for a decade and wanted to stay in the neighborhood but had outgrown their bungalow and couldn’t modify it to fit their needs. They had a near miss on a house on Prentiss Avenue, losing it to another couple after taking a night to sleep on it and then got a call from the previous owner of the Harcourt Drive house asking if they were interested. Evans and Dooley knew this house, leaky roof, jungle-like landscape and all (and took more than a few nights to sleep on that decision). The deal was finally struck, but the plan for renovation had yet to crystallize. “The kitchen and garage were originally on the other end of the house. I was kind of stuck in my mind that I wanted to adapt it that way and just couldn’t make the floor plan work,” Evans says. Inspiration struck when Dooley suggested turning the house inside out, moving the kitchen and garage to the other end. “I literally sketched it out, probably in an hour, after we decided to do the flip,” Evans says.

t

Thus began the lengthy back and forth with the city’s Design Review Board and the South Carolina Department of Archives and History to ensure the home maintained its historic integrity through the restoration. All told, the journey from purchase to completion took about two years. Evans’ official occupation is physician, but his talents are many. Having developed an early appreciation for architecture and design while traveling the world with his parents, Evans attended Auburn University and at one point was enrolled in the school of architecture as he made his way towards medical school. “I’m just always interested in the process,” Evans says. “I’m a very functional type person and I want everything to look good but also have a very specific function and use.” Evans called on Chris Newell, a residential designer with Trey Cole Design Group with whom he had worked on previous renovation projects, to translate their design into structural drawings. One of the main objectives of the renovation was to create space to feature the couples’ artwork (local artist Tim Speaker is a longtime favorite) and inherited heirlooms. “We like to collect art, when we travel we like to buy things and we just want to be able to see our stuff,” Evans says. Evans and Dooley blended their respective styles effectively throughout the home. Evans’ taste tends toward traditional, while Dooley prefers to make a bold statement. “I told Michael my requirements were a big kitchen, a big pantry and a big closet and he drew those for me,” Dooley says. “Then I came in and made it pop.” Dooley has a talent for organization and symmetry that is apparent throughout the home. The master suite is a study of order with stations for two in the master bathroom, all beatifully merchandized.

Michael Evans and Jeffrey Dooley utilize this door, just off their expansive kitchen. It leads to a small patio adjacent to the lush backyard and pool and is a favorite spot of their beloved dog, Genevieve.

Much of the wallpaper in the home is from Cole & Son in London. Evans and Dooley originally selected the teal colorway for the peacocks in the dining room and had the paper hung sight unseen. The teal proved to be a bit much and Evans had the silver birds overnighted across the pond as a replacement.

Evans’ flair for function was put to work in the design of the kitchen and its pantry, where the couple went as far as measuring pots and pans to make the most efficient use possible of every square inch of storage space. A long, narrow pantry (which Dooley dubbed the runway) plays well-organized host to the serving pieces the couple uses to regularly entertain neighbors and friends. “The kitchen is pretty much designed for two of us cooking, because we both love to cook,” Evans says. “We looked at how we use the space. We knew we wanted measuring cups here and, literally, that’s why these drawers are that depth. It totally works, you just have to put a little thought into it.” These days Evans and Dooley spend much of their time poolside in the back yard, enjoying the fruits of Evans’ gardening labors. In addition to roses, wildflowers and orchids, Evans tends an extensive herb and vegetable garden. “He just loves to grow things so I’m always calling the neighbors saying you’ve got to come get some of this food,” says Dooley, who has an eye for containers and an ever-growing collection of succulents. The backyard today looks vastly different from the overgrown lot Evans and Dooley inhereted with the property. They wanted a pool but one that felt fully integrated into the design of the house. To bring the pool level with the grade of the lot they cleverly installed an above ground pool on steel I-beams and then hardscaped the space with luxe materials including custom handmade clinker brick to match the original home’s façade. On pleasant evenings you may find the couple greeting neighbors from the side porch, a lovely space with an original broken tile floor that had been enclosed in an earlier renovation; being the people people they are, Evans and Dooley wanted an outdoor space that would keep them connected to their community, so they opened it right back up. The historic house at the end of the cul-desac has turned into a place where this couple feels right at home inside and out.

Dooley insisted on navy walls for the master bedroom - even before they made the decision to purchase the home. This space was the kitchen in the original layout and the couple chose to keep the dimensions cozy when converting it to a bedroom. Evans put his skill behind a sewing machine to work to fashion the window treatments.

The master closet occupies the space that was once the garage. This was one area where Evans and Dooley felt they could go a bit contemporary with the ceiling height, all the better to showcase Dooley’s carefully curated collection of accessories.

Local glass artist LouEllen Beckham Davis created the window above the bathtub in the master bath. Evans and Dooley say the hexagon pattern on the wallpaper - also from Cole & Son - took some getting used to. The carrera marble floor was designed to replicate the pattern of the original downstairs bathroom.

efore grabbing the car keys for yet another visit to the local garden center for yet another flat of plants to brighten that spot by the mailbox, you may want to head to the backyard for inspiration. Not the one behind your house, though. Head for South Carolina’s backyard, aka the South Carolina Botanical Garden. Located on the edge of the Clemson University campus, this 295acre site is one of the Southeast’s most prestigious plant collections with an evergrowing reputation. In addition to the vast array of South Carolina native plants, the Botanical Garden includes numerous introduced species that thrive here, fulfilling the goal of illustrating various plant habitats. Its well-tended brick paths and natural trails meander across waterfalls, around ponds and through forests, meadows, bogs and display gardens to celebrate the bounty of nature. Benches and open meadows invite rest and meditation, picnic areas abound. Whether you spend an hour or an entire day, you will come away with a

new appreciation of the abundance of plant life that surrounds us in the Palmetto State. Bursts of color and banks of blossoms delight the eye and offer encouragement for even the most inexperienced gardener.

A Little History What began as a living laboratory for Clemson University horticulture students in the 1950s received its designation as the state’s official garden forty years later. Since that time, it has undergone major expansions that have made its setting not only more attractive but more accessible as a resource for the home gardener. Through years of trial and error, of transplanting and propagating, experimenting and sometimes failing, the Botanical Garden staff (and an army of volunteers) have gathered in this one spot more than 10,000 plant species and varieties that are hardiest, healthiest and most likely to succeed. The gardens’ designs have undergone many changes over the years, notably

The Hunt Cabin was built for Charles Hunt, Jr. and his wife Martha in 1826 on land in Seneca, SC. rather than see it be torn down, the Class of 1915 purchased it and donated it to Clemson. It was moved to Clemson in 1955.

the addition of brick walkways, many seating areas and, most recently a new entrance. Three unique houses representing three periods of South Carolina’s history enhance the natural environment and offer context for the color and variety of plantings throughout the year: The Hanover House, a 1716 French Huguenot dwelling from the Lowcountry, is surrounded by a somewhat formal courtyard featuring urns and plantings as well as an heirloom vegetable garden. The Hunt Cabin, a circa 1826 dwelling typical of the more rural Upstate area, is tucked into a shady area beside a gurgling stream and surrounded by plants of the South Carolina mountain habitat. A third structure, which now houses the Fran Hanson Visitor’s Center, a gift shop and art gallery was built in 1998 as the Wren House, a contemporary dwelling that was the first Southern Living Idea House. Its walled gardens and sweeping lawns reflect today’s trends in the home landscape.

Bring along your smartphone or tablet to take advantage of a free app that tracks your progress through the garden and allows you to access information about the plants in each location. When you enter the Butterfly Garden, for example, that name pops up on the app map. Tap on it and a list of the plants in that garden appears. It’s available in the App Store as: scbg.

Summer’s Bounty Regardless of the time of year, you’ll find something blooming to provide inspiration and education about the kinds of plants appropriate for almost any spot in the home garden, from formal plantings to heirloom vegetables. The Botanical Garden’s organization makes it possible to focus on a particular type of plant and its many varieties in one location, then move on to see those plants used in connection with others. A detailed garden map-- available on site or online— makes it easy to navigate the various specialty gardens.

Summer is an especially advantageous time to see plant groupings at full maturity. The Hydrangea Garden showcases one of the most popular home garden shrubs blooming in a spectrum of color, shapes and size. The Butterfly Garden is literally alive with butterflies from early spring through fall feasting on milkweed and butterfly bush. The Hosta Garden offers a huge variety of these shade-loving beauties and the Perennial Garden includes examples of many hardy plant varieties such as azaleas, rhododendrons and more than 100 daylilies. One of the more informative spaces is the Xeriscape Garden, which features drought-tolerant plants that thrive with

little irrigation, important in South Carolina’s unpredictable summers. Taking this concept to the next level is an experimental garden called The Chihuahuan Desert Garden. It is one of the newest and most unusual areas of the SC Botanical Garden, comprised of more than 640 species of plants brought here from the desert by that name in parts of the western United States and Mexico. Cactus, yuccas, agave, century plants and other varieties are thriving in the South Carolina heat (and do well in drought conditions). Many of these somewhat dramatic plants will undoubtedly find their way to our home-garden market.

Eschscholzia californica is an ornamental plant native to the United States and Mexico that flowers in summer.

Bring It Home No, you’re not allowed to pick, dig or otherwise transport the plants growing in the SC Botanical Garden at Clemson University however, twice a year a plant sale features a large selection and variety of seasonally appropriate plants like summer annuals, vegetable transplants and herbs, bog plants, perennials, ferns, shrubs, grasses, trees and fruits. Hard-tofind native plants and rare plants are also for sale. Most of the plants are produced in the SCBG nursery and many come from the Botanical Garden’s collection. Funds from the sale support operations and enhancements in the garden. Mark your calendars: the next sale is scheduled for September 21. For more information, visit clemson.edu/ public/scbg.

From the Mountains to the Sea South Carolina’s topography allows us to travel from the top of Sassafras Mountain in Pickens County (the state’s highest peak at an elevation of 3,563 feet) to sea level in a drive of about four hours’ time. That change in elevation represents a habitat that changes drastically from one end of the state to the other and one of the most exciting additions to the South Carolina Botanical Garden in the Natural

Heritage Garden, which in the space of half a mile or so takes visitors literally through the full range of the state’s natural habitats from the cool, damp ravines of the Blue Ridge Escarpment through pine forests and plains of the Midlands to the coastal habitats of the barrier islands. From a 5,000-year-old shell ring remnant of our Native American history to Piedmont granite flatrocks, the rare and delicate Oconee

Bell wildflower, and hundreds of astonishing carnivorous plants, this trail offers surprises at every turn. Although it’s only half a mile, plan on devoting an hour or more in exploring the largest, most comprehensive collection of native plants in the Southeast that not only preserves them but demonstrates their use in home landscapes for sustainable, low ecological impact.

The juicy colors of the season are in full offering in June with berries galore, from strawberries last stand to a flush of local raspberries. And, what feels more summery than frosted lemonade? We kicked our June dessert into overdrive with the addition of “disco blueberries”: local blueberries tossed in edible glitter. A sprinkle of raspberry nonpareils and two types of artisan cookies-- lemon macarons and vanilla meringues-make a slice of June a treat on the table and the fork. SUMMER 2017

It’s a Cookie

Macarons are made with egg whites, sugar and almond powder and filled with ganache, buttercream or jam. They are sold stand alone, in sleeves of six or twelve and are included as part of other desserts like on our summer cookie cakes. Jonathan Russ of Jonathan Caleb Cake began making them for hostess gifts and is now a sought after wedding cake and macaron baker in South Carolina. The very first flavor he made was eggnog and his newest flavor is rosewater with grapefruit. Russ thinks the trend of alphanumeric cakes will go nowhere but up. “I could see a demand for them here because monograms

Modus

are so popular in the South. As a kid, I always wanted the big number candle on a cake so this is just over the top fun.” Instead of using a mold, Russ cuts out the custom dough with an exacto knife by hand and freezes it for a few minutes to lessen the likelihood of it cracking in the oven. To portion an alphanumeric dessert into magazine perfect slices, place it in the refrigerator for 10 minutes to allow the buttercream to firm up. Use a mallet to smack a sharp chef’s knife for a clean cut or simply use a heavy cleaver. The result is a not-smushed plated dessert. It’s rather great fun and easier than imagined.

Macaron Facts • Venetian monks have been making macarons since the 8th century. • Catherine de Medici brought macarons with her to France in 1533 for her wedding reception to Henry II. • Macarons came back into vogue in the US in 2010 and continue to gain in popularity as not just a gluten free sweet.

Sterling Possibilities Serving pieces can be heirloom worthy utensils / by Stephanie Burnette / Photography by Eli Warren

aybe no other thing will be held for generations of happy occasions— holidays, birthdays, anniversaries and parties galore— than a cake or pie server. When put in this context, to behold the handle that your grandmother or mother, aunt or sister sliced with is something special in its own right. If you’re in possession of a silver server, it may be by default as part of a larger set of sterling flatware or as the piece that survived, passed down within a family. Many of the old silver patterns include beautiful serving pieces like Reed & Barton’s Francis I, Kirk-Stieff’s Repousse, Gorham’s Buttercup or Strasbourgh and Towle’s Old Master. But what’s especially fun are the odd pattern servers, often unmarked other than maybe a sterling hallmark. The English puddings of the

16th century were the first food to be served with a wide flatblade utensil. During the 18th century we see cake knives and fish knives appear in dining rooms. A century later, American silver manufacturers recommended implements for pies, pastry, jellies, and cake (called shovels and spades, lifters, and blades), all of similar shape but slightly different in form, marketed to the new wealth of the ostentatious Gilded Age. Until recently a cake knife was sold with a companion piece: a cake server. The sharp serrated knife is expected to cut through buttercream without breaking it while the server is used to lift a slice onto a plate. Interestingly, servers for formal events are manufactured with a straight handle, whereas bent handle servers denote pie, an un-iced and more casual desert. Nearly all of these utensils offered today have a hollow sterling handle fitted around a stainless steel blade, making them a nicely priced gift to give for weddings or anniversaries. However this marriage of materials does not make them especially hardy. Never should one see the inside of a dishwasher; in fact hand-washing with warm water only is recommended.

A burgeoning thirst for rosé Cicada’s Song is the result of a friendship that started 7 years ago right here in the Carolinas between a French ex-pat in Asheville and two imports to Greenville. In its first run, 1,200 cases of the 2017 vintage were produced, but the partnership is already looking toward next year (and a possible screw top).

Greenville artist Zach Landrum designed a label featuring raised indigo type and the profile of a cicada set on a soft white background. It makes an elegant, striking statement that stands out cleanly from the pink-orange hues of the wine.

Rosé Evangelist / by Pete Martin / photography by Ian Curcio

Cicada’s Song is made in Provence but born in the Carolinas As part of a joint venture with Mike Okupinski and importer Philippe Bourgeois, Ed Buffington is now marketing his own rosé named Cicada’s Song. It’s a dream he’s had for years, though he admits rosé hasn’t always been an easy sell. “I’ve been trying to sell rosé to Greenville since we opened in 2010. I had a woman laugh in my face once,” says Buffington, who co-owns The Community Tap with Okupinski. “Now, we literally can’t stock enough.” Buffington’s love affair with rosé started when he and his wife Kim spent two weeks in the Provence region in southeastern France nearly 20 years ago. While dining at a small pizzeria, Buffington noticed almost everyone was drinking rosé. He ordered a carafe, had an epiphany and was hooked. Ever since that first taste, Buffington has been a rosé evangelist, sharing his love for the versatile pink wine with anyone who would listen. Buffington is not alone in his enthusiasm. Rosé sales are seeing double-digit growth, accounting for about 10 percent of America’s wine consumption; in France, it became the top-selling wine more than a decade ago. The Community Tap had been selling Bourgeois’ wines for more than seven years and the business relationship developed into a natural friendship. “We were traveling around France, freezing our tails off last January,” Buffington says, “and Philippe mentions he’s losing one of his labels. I’ve got this idea in my head and Philippe’s got this hole in his product line.” Bourgeois needed a mid-priced rosé and Buffington knows what sells it; Cicada’s Song was about to become a reality.

Being a wine importer, Bourgeois has relationships with French wineries and understands the logistics of wine production and the wholesale process. Buffington, with his retail experience, understands what’s needed to bring a product to market and the importance of packaging. Cicada’s Song (which retails for $16) has already secured distribution in more than a dozen states and will be poured at select farm-to-table restaurants such as Rhubarb in Asheville and The Anchorage in Greenville. The back label highlights the wine’s origin “Provence in a bottle” and recalls a folklore tale about the cicada and its journey to sing and wake people from their afternoon naps. “Packaging matters,” Buffington says. “As a Frenchman, Philippe says what should matter is what’s in the bottle. I agree with that, but we’re in America and packaging matters.” What’s in the bottle does matter, of course, and this blend of 50 percent mourvèdre and grenache, sourced from a winery in Provence and blended under Bourgeois’ direction, doesn’t disappoint. Though Buffington calls the wine dry, a touch of residual sugar gives it a slight sweetness. Flavors of white peach and, to a lesser extent, grapefruit and melon are nicely nuanced, presenting layers of flavors and a full-bodied ripeness with a long finish. It’s a wine that should be as much at home on the back porch as at the dinner table. “We make a good team,” Buffington says of the relationship with Bourgeois. “One of the things Mike and I have been really good at over the years is collaborating with other producers on a new product. My goal is to grow this. I see this as having real legs.” at Home

Long Table Dinners THE ART OF UNMATCHED ENTERTAINING / by Stephanie Burnette / photography by Blenco & Co.

Dining in the garden has never been more inspiring. Invite a crowd, small or large, over for a long table supper in the waning light of summer evenings. A family style meal is the way to accomplish a gathering where you can enjoy the al fresco experience as much as guests. We tapped the expertise of Milton’s Cuisine and Cocktails, whose garden suppers are feted events at their 155 year old farmhouse and biodynamic micro-farm (called Milton’s Acre) in Northeast Georgia. Chef Derek Dollar and his team-- including farm manager Peter Kohm-- grow 90 varieties of heirloom vegetables, fruits and herbs to supply the restaurant’s menus and cocktails, garden suppers and private events. Start with an appetizer that can be picked up and carried around as well as a batched cocktail. Milton’s Acre suggests a duo of cucumber, quite the clever pairing; chilled to-

mato cucumber gazpacho matched with a cucumber basil sparkler made with Effen cucumber vodka. A batched cocktail is a smart starter, sitting ready by the pitcher-full with glasses aplenty. Gaspacho can be pre-ladled into lidded jars with selfserve spoons. Set the table for face-to-face seating with low spaced out arrangements keeping room for communal dishes. Consider common vessels for twinkling votive candles. They can hold a candle alone or be nestled with organic ingredients like grits, dried beans, seashells or pebble. The trick to the long table dinner look is to use the same size rectangular folding tables butted end to end. These tables are narrow and uniform and look apt with simple white tablecloths and a runner of herbs or garden greenery, possible

134 _ at Home

_Modus_IGT.indd 134

sprinkled with battery-powered fairy lights. Chairs can be a menagerie of what you have or can borrow. It works well if all the chairs are armless and nearly the same seat height. Avoid placing chairs at the ends of your table since these banquet-style tables tend to be more narrow than a traditional dining setup. Plates and flatware can vary immensely, though consider odd sets of twos or threes alternating by seat. Matching napkins, whether cloth or paper can be uniform and simple. The show-stopper of the evening is the natural beauty of eating in a garden as well as the dishes served on the plate. Opt for a simple beautiful protein served with two sides, one warm and one cold. This time of year Chef Dollar likes the airline cut of

chicken (it’s the breast with the wing drumette still attached) alongside tomato corn basil spoonbread and a shaved vegetable salad dressed with white balsamic vinaigrette. For dessert think cobbler selfscooped into bowls. Crème fresh or whipped cream is more easily passed than ice cream and don’t forget to keep pitchers of still water on the table too. If you plan to set up your dinner around raised beds or garden boxes think about purchasing low cost solar lights to pepper into these spaces. As the sun drops below the horizon their ambient lights will add to the festivities. And, if you don’t want to spray this area of your yard for mosquitos, employ torches filled with citronella oil to keep everyone bite free.

Rain Down

Outdoor showers are sprite addition to busy backyards / by Leigh Savage

O

utdoor showers make perfect sense by the lake or pool, but today’s homeowners are adding them to backyards for a post-gardening rinse, a postactivity cool down, a pet wash or simply to create a luxurious, spa-like experience in their own backyard. Aimee Williams Garrett of Gateway Supply Co. has seen a major uptick in the number of homeowners looking to design an outdoor shower and says a well planned one can make a backyard stand out, whether it’s a simple do-ityourself project or a designed outdoor oasis. Exposed showers often will feature a large rain head and Garrett says there are many styles to choose from top brands such as Outdoor Shower Co. and Jaclo. Outdoor shower kits are available online at a variety of price points, but Garrett suggests visiting a showroom to

136 _ at Home

make sure the fixtures will work for your configuration. Homeowners must also consider location and available plumbing and whether they want an outdoor shower exposed in an open space or within an enclosure. A plumber is another helpful resource, Garrett says, as adding to the garden hose line “will only have cold water, which will not give you the relaxing, soothing shower you are looking for.” To cut cost on a heated shower, keeping it as close to the home as possible can often allow tapping into existing water lines. Look for ways to blend an outdoor shower into the environment and Garrett says shower-friendly landscaping and permeable pavers, which are designed to manage water runoff, can help give the shower that hideaway appeal.

SUMMER 2018

Sandra Cannon of Sandra Cannon Interior Design has also noticed increasing interest in alfresco showers and says her priority is creating a space that blends in with its environment. “The sustainability of natural elements is the undercurrent of the outdoor shower,” she says. “I like to use elements and materials from the natural habitat and infuse the shower with those to create more of a seamless transition.” She suggests materials like teak, slate, travertine, concrete and limestone, as well as heavy-duty fixtures of chrome or rubbed bronze. Cannon customizes projects to fit with its surroundings and intended usage and says that while lakeside showers and dressing rooms are common, she is hearing from homeowners who simply want the option of showering outdoors. “We’re lucky to have good weather more often than in many other areas, so it’s definitely something people are talking about,” Cannon says. “If they have the views, the space and the privacy, it can be a nice experience to create an outdoor shower right off the master suite.”

Project Know-how • Outdoor shower fixtures must be winterized at the end of the season to prevent freezing. • Consult with a plumber or builder to ensure you have proper drainage in your chosen location. • Consider materials underfoot carefully. Instead of tile that might crack with cold weather, choose permeable pavers or artificial turf. • Think about how you want to use the shower: hosing off sand and dirt? Cleaning fishing gear? Bathing pets? Add the features that suit your plans such as a foot shower, hand shower, hooks, a slatted mat or outdoor speakers. • Make sure the space is well ventilated to reduce mold and mildew.

Turf Time

Synthetic lawns look and play like real grass (more than ever) /by Leigh Savage

T

im Rooke is expecting a lot of visitors to his Collins Creek home very soon thanks to the 8,000-square-foot golf project currently underway in his backyard. “It’s the talk of the neighborhood,” Rooke says. “We’re basically going to have to have a mini-invitational when it’s finished.” Rooke and his wife Kristen are both avid golfers and had considered putting in a smaller practice area before deciding to go big, turning their entire backyard into a synthetic turf golf green, including a bunker and putting area. When Tim asked “if we could just not buy a new car and instead do the whole backyard,” Kristen Rooke readily agreed. As varsity boys’ golf coach at Christ Church Episcopal School, she’s led the team to six out of the past seven state championships and knows the value of practice. In addition to a place to work on their swings, the Rookes liked the idea of reduced maintenance and an evergreen yard with no weeds. “How nice is it to have a beautiful golf hole in my backyard, and it looks like that 365 days a year?” he says. Since artificial turf simply needs to be blown off every once in a while, the Rookes are cutting their monthly lawn maintenance bill significantly (they still have fescue in the front yard). To achieve their golfers’ dream landscape, the Rookes contacted Scott Giles at Pendleton-based

SUMMER 2018

_Modus_GreenLiving.indd 139

Heritage Synthetic Turf, which opened in 1999 offering natural landscaping, design and maintenance. Around 2002, the company did a couple of synthetic jobs and before they knew it, the specialty was making up more than half of the company’s business. “That’s when we changed our focus,” Giles says. In addition to golf-related projects, Heritage installs dog parks, kennels, croquet courts, playgrounds and turf around pools, slopes or other difficult-to-maintain areas. “It’s extremely customized,” Giles says. “It’s no maintenance, no mess in rain or snow, pets can come and go and it’s very realistic. People reach down and feel it because even from just feet away, it’s hard to tell if it’s real or synthetic.” Giles said the turf offerings have evolved in looks and longevity and he has exclusive rights to certain products, including Synthetic Turf International, where he is on the advisory board. The products are made of polypropylene, polyethylene or nylon and are spun into yarns on massive looms. Rooke expects his custom project, complete with breaks and undulations, to be complete soon, and he’s excited to work on 30-yard shots in his own backyard. “It already looks so cool,” he said. “I can’t wait to see it when it’s finished.”

Reasons to go synthetic • Indoor or outdoor putting greens or tee lines (commercial or residential) • Safe, easy-maintenance playgrounds • Dog parks or kennels • Poolside or rooftop areas • Sports fields: baseball, soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, football, bocce, croquet, tennis • Lakeside, on slopes or yards with limited sun exposure • Frequent travelers - no watering, mowing, seeding or pesticides needed

Koi versus Goldfish Koi are a subspecies of Carp, which are domesticated and bred specifically for their bright and varied markings. The more koi, the larger and deeper the pool—typically no more than four fish per 1,000 gallons—but this can vary with the size of the fish. Koi are resilient omnivores, so don’t plan to put many plants in with them. They can grow to be more than two feet long and generally live more than 50 years. Koi do well on their own, or they can share a pool with ornamental goldfish. Goldfish are also carp relatives and have been bred for centuries in China. They display an array of colors and patterns but notably also offer a variety of body sizes and shapes. Goldfish do not live as long as koi—an average of ten years with good care—but are hardy fish as long as there is good filtration in their pond. Because goldfish tend to be smaller, their pond need not be as large as koi. Goldfish will not eat plants, making them a better choice for a water garden or smaller pool. 142 _ at Home

_Technophile_KoiPond.indd 142

o you’re finally ready to build that koi pond. Now what? According to Jim Borenstein, owner of South Pleasantburg Nursery, the first step is to decide whether you want a true koi pond or a water garden with a few fish. A koi pond is all about fish: some pond owners have dozens. If you opt to go this route, you’ll need a larger and deeper pond with a more elaborate filtration system. Koi will eat nearly anything green, so plant options are pretty much limited to water lilies. Most residences opt for what’s called a water garden. It can be any size and, with water plants, can look especially natural (think of creating a small ecosystem). Technology makes this easier now that filters and pumps are less expensive and more efficient than even a decade ago. Add a mixture of larger goldfish varieties and you’re ready to go. Think bigger, deeper and invest in good equipment This is a hobby that can be relatively low maintenance or you can take a really deep dive. The key is to take the time and spend the money to set up your pond or water garden the right way from inception. “It’s hard to think bigger if you’re the one digging, but the number one thing people wish they had done differently is to build their pond bigger to begin with,” says Borenstein. More space is better for the health of the fish, plants and the entire pond ecosystem. Two feet is fine for a few fish, but if you have more than 8-10 koi or goldfish, the cavity will need to be at least three feet deep. “The initial cost will definitely be higher, but the planning and quality will more than make up for it in avoiding maintenance costs or, even worse, having to start over,” says Borenstein. A great way to learn more is to talk with a growing community of the koi obsessed. The SC Koi and Water Garden Society meets monthly and hosts an annual pond tour as well as an annual koi show. The society’s President, Mel Barutha, estimates that the Upstate boasts 73 homes with ponds and/or waterfalls. “They can be really basic or they can be very extravagant,” he says of the water features. “I know two people who have a waterfall just for the sound of the water and other families with multiple ponds, some larger than swimming pools.” But wait, doesn’t that waste a lot of water? In fact, most ponds use slightly less water than the same size irrigated lawn because water is recaptured and used over and over. And, any worry about chemical use is unwarranted; the ecosystem filters itself (natural microbes and beneficial bacteria present keep the system in balance). Usually the only treatment needed for ponds or water gardens is an additive to remove chlorine from the municipal water used to fill the pool, which well water wouldn’t require. And what about mosquitoes? Nope. The constant running of the pump means that there is no still, stagnant water where mosquitoes could breed. Mr. Borenstein says having a water garden is worth the set up. “People want it for the sound of the water or the beauty of the plants, but the thing that keeps them is the fish. They become pets and people really love them.” SUMMER 2018

Place, Explored Artbomb’s Diane Kilgore Condon

/ by Tasha L. Harrison / Photography by Will Crooks

As the owner of Artbomb and a working artist, Diane Kilgore Condon has a unique perspective on the once blighted now hip artist community of The Village of West Greenville. On its surface, the popularity of Greenville’s far west end seems to be driven by a brilliant rebrand, but when I step inside Artbomb I find that the soul of the community and what drew artists to this side of the city is still there. Artbomb, which is housed in the old Brandon Mill Company Store, is the first and only dedicated artist space of its kind. Unlike a lot of studios, Artbomb is not a gallery. In fact, the doors are locked during business hours so that the sixteen resident artists can focus on creating instead of stopping throughout their day to complete transactions or entertain browsers. It is important to Kilgore Condon for artists to dedicate time toward completing a body of work. Finished works are sent out to galleries to be featured or sold.

Tiny Flocks Scrap wood from Michael Condon has been upcycled into a surplus endeavor for Diane Kilgore Condon. Little painted bird heads have become an it collectible in Greenville, for those who want to own one of her paintings (but at a much lower price point) to those who want to amass a flock of tiny birds or just want to give a very local gift.

It seems almost impossible that she has been able to keep this building while charging artists mere pennies compared to other studio spaces in The Village. Their location at the far end of the street affords Artbomb some flexibility, but even Kilgore Condon admits it’s a miracle they have been able to survive in the booming microeconomy. “Only God, lots of duct tape and the fact that we pay county and not city taxes has kept Artbomb where it is,” she says. Some smart business maneuvering on her part has kept the enclave from being encroached upon; a few years

Composition Modus ago they bought the annex and the two houses on the lot next door. The turnover is so low that the group of esteemed artists who maintain studios at Artbomb -- Blake Smith, Alexia Timberlake Boyd, Kim Dick, Susan Young Evans, Jocarol Mitchell Rogers, Greg Flint, Paul Flint, Katie Walker, Tim Speaker, Elizabeth Shanks Speaker, Tim Cassell, Katy Bergman Cassell, Teri Pena, Darryl DeBruehl, Jane Dorn-- feel more like a family, which seems at a juxtaposition with how rapidly the community is changing. While some storefronts remain empty, there is definitely a new and palpable energy to this corner of the city. “As long as they don’t rip down buildings, I don’t have any objection to any of it,” says Kilgore Condon. “The only thing that I do wish is that they look the neighborhood people in the face. Acknowledge them and bring them along.” That is a common refrain when folks talk about The Village. Property values have gone up, which in and of itself is a good thing, but it also has some long-time residents concerned about being priced or taxed out which would leave the community stripped of the diversity that Kilgore Condon and many other tenants cherish. “Having an interaction with someone who is very different than you is always a good experience. But you have to start doing it to believe it.” For Diane Kilgore Condon, her life and her work are about these intimate individual experiences and she tries to capture them and translate them with paint, shape and color. She grew up in Wisconsin and as the daughter of hardworking farmers, spent a lot of time alone. That is where she believes her creativity was born and her work speaks to the quietude of her childhood. “The thing I long for is that sense of being really in the moment and having something happen when you’re really tuned in like kids are.” In a surprisingly candid moment, she says she doesn’t know if she’s

SUMMER 2018

Diane says her grandmother was a birdwatcher and she remembers her family always pointing them out. When her husband, Michael, had a pile of small cuts from a mountain home he had built for a client, Diane jumped at the opportunity to paint a series of smalls. “So I put the birds back in the trees in my own way,” she says. Dozens at a time are available at Art & Light Gallery.

strong enough to keep doing this scale of work for the rest of her life. Hearing that from someone who is an embodiment of her art is surprising. When I asked what else she would do she admitted that she would probably “go mad” if she wasn’t in the studio everyday. Her most recent series depicts boats and very much illustrates this sentiment. An oversized work titled The Journeyman was painted right after the death of a friend that she helped care for in her last days. Bright daisy-like flowers burst from a muted, but also effervescent background of a boat in water with a dog at the helm that speaks to the beauty and sadness in that transition. Other pieces in the series hold secrets in the muted tones like a school of silvery fish painted into the hull of a canoe. Each work in the series emits a palpable stillness, a quietude that she says she always seeks (and I believe she has found).

Coffee bar installation hints at building’s historic past

_Modus Behind the Wall.indd 152

Until recently it’s been one of the more inquired about sittin’ empty structures in the Upstate with many fearing it would be demolished for redevelopment, but Greenville-based developer Blue Wall Real Estate stepped in to reimagine the iconic Spartanburg building as 45 luxury urban apartments grounded by retail. McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture was retained to design the adaptive reuse of the property. The back of the first floor contains the most interesting of spaces. Sandra Cannon Interior Design was employed to create a common area for residents: part party room/part coffee bar/part meeting place. A feature wall now includes a nod to the building’s

retail past; what looks like a fine art mosaic is an installation of credit card blanks in a sea of blue. The water-like wall is the work of Spartanburg artist Laura Flacy based on a design idea by Cannon, 20 feet high and 18 feet wide utilizing 5000 credit card blanks. It took Flacy four days on scaffolding to glue the varying blue credit cards, along with some white and black ones to create depth. “The trick was to source the quantity of cards in AugSmith’s specific three brand shades of blue,” says Cannon. “It gives a real nod to the building’s past which I like. Laura did an amazing job, it has a liquid feel as you look at it that’s modern too.”

One of Spartanburg’s premier downtown buildings has been sitting empty for nearly a decade. On the corner of East Main and Liberty is Aug. W. Smith, once a majestic department store in the grand tradition of southern downtown retailers. It was named for Augustus Wardlaw Smith, its proprietor along with co-owner H. Frank McGee. The building was designed in 1926 by Lockwood, Greene and Co. Engineers with an exterior of local brick, stone and cast-inplace concrete. It remained in business for 55+ years and was beloved for its showcase plate glass windows and elaborate displays designed by James “Buck” Buchanan.
