Do Downtown Greenville is an initiative of several downtown merchants, restaurants, and hotels in partnership with the Greenville Journal. Our goal is to communicate to residents and visitors alike everything our downtown has to offer. Downtown Greenville presents opportunities unlike any other with noteworthy shops, remarkable restaurants, visual and performing arts venues, beautiful green spaces, and more. The redevelopment vision of the City of Greenville is to have “a thriving Downtown which is recognized nationally as an example of a ‘state-of-the-art’ community in which to live, work, and play… which serves in itself as a national attraction.” Mission accomplished. Downtown Greenville is home to more than 90 shops and 90 restaurants. If you can’t find it here, chances are it can’t be found! Another component of Do Downtown Greenville is a focus on all

Four-day extravaganza features shopping, dining, merriment and more

It’s the most wonderful time of the year – especially all along Main Street, where the Downtown Holiday Happening promises many a reason to be of good cheer. This four-day extravaganza features special prices, holiday promotions, even prize opportunities at your favorite shops, restaurants and service providers as well as a merry mix of live music and free festivities. It’s all Happening Thursday through Sunday, Dec. 11-14 – during the happiest season of all – and there’s something to get every shopper, every music lover, every foodie’s heart a’glowing. “This is such a fun occasion,” says Heidi Woody, owner of The Beaded Frog. “Holiday Happening draws everyone downtown – which of course is just the greatest place to be.” Part of a planning committee a dozen downtown merchants strong, Woody says the event – now in its second year – is a celebration of independent business. “We want to promote the incredible shopping and dining opportunities here,” she explains. “Main Street is so beautiful this time of year, and that creates such a festive atmosphere.” There are nearly 70 downtown businesses participating, Woody says, including retailers offering everything from fashion to jewelry to toys and, of course, beads, along with eateries, hotels, galleries and other downtown attractions. Most every spot will have a ballot box where shoppers can enter their chance to win fabulous holiday baskets chock full of gift cards and merchandise valued at more than $500 (names will be drawn the week of December 15th). “The gift baskets are incredible,” says Ruta Fox, one of last year’s eight lucky winners. “Mine had such a huge assortment of products from downtown businesses – like the Soby’s cookbook – and gift certificates for all sorts of places. I was thrilled to win!”

Convenience is a Gift

Fox shops downtown throughout the year – “It’s good to patronize local merchants,” the Greenville writer says – and she especially enjoys checking off her holiday list here. “You can park once, then explore all the interesting places,” she says. “It’s fun to walk around … much more fun than sitting in traffic!” To enhance convenience during the Holiday Happening, the City of Greenville Parking Services is offering a $2 flat fee – beginning 6pm Friday and running through midnight Sunday – at the Commons, Spring, Poinsett and River parking garages. There’s free parking in the Richardson garage 6-9pm Friday, 6am-9pm Saturday, and 6am Sunday-6am Monday. More free parking is available on the W. Washington Deck after 6pm Friday. So park your car – either for free or for cheap – then hop on one of the trolleys carrying shoppers from North Main to the West End throughout the four-day event.

Holiday Happening includes some of our favorite street performers and other local artists at various venues from the West End to NOMA Square. Tuning up for the event are the a cappella Pitch Hitters, Milltown Brass Quintet, violinist Hans Wolff, electric violinist Jeff Neil and saxophonist John Kates, just to name a few; there will be plenty of performances by school and church groups, too. Special events down in the West End include a daily Parade of Snowmen, outdoor shopping on the Shoeless Joe Plaza and outdoor movies on Friday and Saturday nights. If you want to know everything that’s Happening – not to mention who’s performing where – well, there’s an app for that! Anyone with a smart phone can download iongreenville, a free app that maps out all four days of music and entertainment; it also lists participating businesses, store specials and options for parking. “We are anticipating a wonderful crowd,” Woody says. “There’s something for everyone. The Holiday Happening is just an all-around good time.” For more information, visit www.downtownholidayhappening.com. The play’s the thing this holiday season

A Streetcar Named Desire

Make a list. Then check it twice, so you don’t miss any of the offerings on local stages this holiday season. Because Santa Claus – along with Scrooge, Ralphie, the Herdmans, George Bailey, even a homeless man named Dwain – is coming to (down)town. Indeed, the play’s the thing this Yuletide as downtown theaters bring many of our beloved Christmas characters – some naughty, some nice – to life. The local playbill’s chock full of comedy, drama, music and a wee bit of social satire … so you better watch out for them all!

Everyone’s a Kid at Christmas

December 19 January 10 Sponsored by Wyche, P.A. & Elliott Davis, LLC

For Tickets: www.WarehouseTheatre.com 864-235-6948 A Streetcar Named Desire is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH, INC.

For the young—and young at heart—South Carolina Children’s Theatre is presenting “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.” This is the story of what happens when the Herdman kids—the rowdiest, most awful kids in the history of the world—are cast in their town’s annual Christmas show. “‘The Best Christmas Pageant Ever’ is a perennial favorite,” says SCCT artistic/education director Betsy Bisson, explaining the children’s theater reprises the comedy every three or four years as its audience ages out. “We actually get calls to complain if we are NOT doing it.” Greenville Little Theatre’s “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” is all about second-grader Pepper McGee, who has a hard time hanging onto her holiday spirit – what with her new baby sister grabbing everyone’s attention – until Santa takes her on a magical adventure. “‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’ is for young audiences, but adults will enjoy it, too,” says Allen McCalla, GLT’s executive artistic director. “It’s just a great piece of theatre with a good story and a wonderful Christmas message.” It’s for all ages AND all budgets: tickets are just $10. From a playwright gifted at short, delightful plays that can be produced very simply, “Santa” is part of GLT’s tradition of presenting an accessible Christmas show for children.

“We keep the price affordable to attract an audience that may not normally attend live theater,” McCalla explains. Likewise, SCCT offers a reduced-price performance on the first Sunday of all its productions. “This creates an opportunity for those who want to see our plays but need a lessexpensive option,” says Bisson.

From Centre Stage’s 2013 production, A Christmas Carol

Hooked on Classics

Get dialed in to a little nostalgia over at Centre Stage, where you can listen to—and WATCH—live radio show productions of two holiday classics: “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “A Christmas Carol.” “Radio is a long-lost art,” says marketing director Allen Evans, noting that six actors voice all the characters and create the sound effects listeners would’ve heard back in the 1940s. “It can be a lot of fun watching people do sound effects.” What’s more, the audience can see what’s going on between actors when they AREN’T at the microphone. “There’s a story within the story,” Evans says, “and a life outside of the story.” Also reaching back—though not quite so far—is GLT with “A Christmas Story.” “We like to produce a holiday classic that excites the actors and appeals to a broad audience,” says McCalla. “I love the movie of ‘A Christmas Story’…it’s so funny, and so true to a bygone era in America.” McCalla says GLT’s stage production keeps it all there: the flagpole triple-dog-dare, the bully, the bunny suit and, of course, the Red Ryder BB gun.

On the Fringe

Centre Stage’s Fringe Series plays to those who prefer more contemporary fare—“shows that are a little edgier, maybe a little deeper” than main stage mainstays, Evans explains—and this December’s run is “Sleeping Indoors.” It’s what happens when a literary reviewer and his wife invite a homeless man to join them for Christmas dinner. They don’t expect to be so charmed by him—or that his journal will be a literary masterpiece—but can he be convinced to give up the only life he’s known for such comforts as sleeping indoors? When you’re more in the mood for a little music and a LOT of comedy, head over to Café And Then Some, where they’re serving up “Murder by Christmas.” An old friend invites Norma Jean and Dot to perform in the Walhalla Christmas Spectacular, but Dot has misgivings: she suspects their friend’s new bride is a black widow whose previous husbands have all died under mysterious circumstances. You can bet there’s something funny going on.
