The Content of Our Character: From States Rights to Civil Rights on view through September 21 From John C. Calhoun to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., state history, slavery, economics, the Civil War, and the Civil Rights movement come to life in this powerful exhibition drawn from the GCMA permanent collection.
Legacy of Impressionism: Languages of Light March 12 through September 21 Impressionism—the first bombshell launched against academic tradition—defined light as color, becoming the first modern language of paint. Sun-drenched and spontaneous, these American Impressionist paintings from the GCMA collection invite viewers to consider the ideas and techniques that opened the door to modern visual expression.
40 Years on Heritage Green: Building Greenville’s Collection April 16 through July 6 The GCMA opened its doors on Heritage Green in 1974 with a small collection and great ambition. Discover the story of the GCMA’s vision and the Upstate community’s generosity in building a permanent collection that is now recognized as one of the premier collections of American art in the country.
Do Downtown Greenville is an initiative of several downtown merchants, restaurants, and hotels in partnership with the Greenville Journal. Our goal is to communicate to residents and visitors alike everything our downtown has to offer. Downtown Greenville presents opportunities unlike any other with noteworthy shops, remarkable restaurants, visual and performing arts venues, beautiful green spaces, and more. The redevelopment vision of the City of Greenville is to have “a thriving Downtown which is recognized nationally as an example of a ‘state-of-the-art’ community in which to live, work, and play… which serves in itself as a national attraction.” Mission accomplished. Downtown Greenville is home to more than 90 shops and 90 restaurants. If you can’t find it here, chances are it can’t be found! Another component of Do Downtown Greenville is a focus on all things local. Shop local. Eat local. Support local. When you shop local, you help support our community. Many of our friends, neighbors, and families are employed by, or own, these businesses that bring special products, services, and variety to Greenville. Make the commitment to shop local this holiday season and know the joy of supporting our community – one of the greatest gifts of all.

by Taking a History Tour Local historian showcases city’s vibrant past
RECYCLE
His “aha!” moment came during a leisurely stroll down Main Street – an insight that’s inspired hundreds of more walks through Greenville’s historic downtown district. John Nolan and his wife were out doing downtown eight years ago when they came upon a group of people wondering about the background of a particular building. “It occurred to me that if someone offered them a fun, informative history tour, they would take it,” Nolan recalls. “People want to know more about our city.” And Nolan – a museum curator with a heart for history, an ear for anecdotes and a portfolio full of vintage photos – was just the man to do it. So in the summer of 2006
he founded Greenville History Tours to provide visitors and locals alike a deeper look into the city’s vibrant past. Nolan leads educational excursions—some on foot, others by car, trolley or bus— sharing stories about downtown’s historic sites, buildings and statues. He takes tours down Main Street, through the West End, and into the city’s earliest neighborhoods. Culinary tours offer a sampling of favorite restaurants combined with a taste of downtown’s history. “It is amazing how rich the history is around here,” says Nolan, author of A Guide to Historic Greenville, South Carolina. “People are always fascinated.” Greenville History Tours averages two walking tours and three culinary tours per week, Nolan estimates, and about two-thirds of his business comes from out-oftowners. Upstate corporations hire him to show off downtown to visiting employees and managers, and he also provides tours to delegations from municipalities that hope to emulate Greenville’s revitalization. But locals love Greenville History Tours, too. “There are plenty of Greenvillians who take my tours,” he says. “Even if you’ve lived here for 20 years, you can get a fresh look at our city and learn some interesting details you might otherwise not know.” That’s because the allure of Greenville’s sights, and sites, can be enhanced by a little extra knowledge. “It’s much like going into a museum with great masterpieces,” Nolan has written. “The artwork itself can bring enjoyment, but when a guide is there to tell you all about the artist, who owned it, its style and unique features, that’s when the artwork comes to life…visiting Greenville is similar. It’s a city with great features that are plain to see, yet a tour can offer a much deeper experience.” Greenville History Tours provides a context for how Greenville transformed from a small trading town to a textile hub to its revitalization into a 21st century city. “We start with what we see today, then fill in the rest of the story about how we arrived at this point,” Nolan says. “I just love history—and I’m here to help everyone else love it, too.”

...with Free Concert Series Downtown Alive, Main Street Fridays provide plenty of weekly fun Her husband is a meteorologist, but Lauren Justus doesn’t turn to him for confirmation that Spring is in the air. Instead, she simply waits to see NOMA Square filled with Greenvillians enjoying Piedmont Natural Gas Downtown Alive and Greenville Heritage Main Street Fridays. “When these events kick off, it signals a new season in downtown Greenville,” says Justus, special events manager at Hyatt Regency Greenville. “We know it’s time to start getting excited about warmer weather.” Presented by the City of Greenville, these weekly concert series feature a variety of the region’s favorite musical acts in an open-air venue throughout the Spring and Summer. Both draw some 45,000 attendees per season, and each series has its own
personality: Downtown Alive typically appeals to young professionals, according to the City’s event coordinator, Kevin Meyer, while Main Street Fridays caters more to families and the 35 and up crowd. Downtown Alive takes place every Thursday from 5:30-8:30pm at NOMA Square. The 2014 season kicks off March 20 with Mac Hobbs & the Social Contracts, then serves up a varied mix of music ranging from Benton Blount’s country to Stereo Reform’s funk to The Swingin Richards’ rock – and everything in between. This outdoor street party is the single-largest fundraiser for the Metropolitan Arts Council, a supporter of artsrelated programs in Greenville and the Upstate.

Main Street Fridays happens every Friday from 5:30-9:30pm, also at NOMA Square. Jump Start Band jumps things off on March 21, followed by a lineup of musical genres with generational appeal. Highlights include the soulful sounds of Chocolate Thunder, blues by Mac Arnold and Plate Full o’ Blues, and jazz from the Mike Frost Band, just to name a few. There’s plenty of rock, pop and beach as well. These family-oriented evenings also feature the Level One Kid’s Corner with inflatables and activities. “Downtown Alive and Main Street Fridays bring such fun energy to NOMA Square,” Justus says. “They do so much to enhance the downtown experience.” Meyer agrees, noting that while both series have been around for years, the City keeps them fresh by constantly considering all aspects of the events—from artist lineup to site layout to beverage sales—to foster continuous improvement from season to season.
“When these events kick off, it signals a new season in downtown Greenville... We know it’s time to start getting excited about warmer weather.” “These concert series are popular because we offer quality entertainment to the public—for free,” he says.
