GPS
Getting Parents Started is a checklist for families to start a dialogue with their existing or prospective childcare center. One of the toughest decisions a family can make is choosing quality childcare for their children. While some rely on the experiences of their neighbors and family, most parents need clear, objective information to compare one provider with another.
The purpose of GPS is to arm parents with a list of best practices and procedures, so families can ask questions of childcare providers as they find one that best suits their needs.
STRIVES FOR EXCELLENCE
SAFE AND SECURE
• What are the Staff: Child Ratios?
• Does the center follow the Safe Kids Upstate Child Safe Provider initiative?
• Is the center compliant with DSS, DHEC, and Fire Marshall requirements?
• Is the facility safe and secure?
• Is the center a member of a professional organization?
• Does the staff exhibit safe practices?
• Does the center participate in a voluntary quality improvement program rating system?
• Does the center comply with all DSS licensing requirements?
• Does the center use a childcare curriculum/philosophy?
SOUND AND STABLE
NURTURING AND ENGAGING
• Does the center meet Greenville Chamber of Commerce “Work Friendly” guidelines?
• Does the center support LiveWell guidelines? • Is the center nurturing?
• Does the center regularly communicate with families? • Does the center have an experienced staff?
• Are the classrooms nurturing?

Read Greenville is a community wide awareness program designed to help spread the word about the importance of reading daily. Through a collaborative partnership with local organizations, Read Greenville educates the community about the importance of literacy, provides strategies and ideas for engaging children and adults, and gives the tools necessary to create a literacy filled world for our residents. As part of Read Greenville, Greenville County citizens and supporters are asked to advocate for and take part in reading daily. Businesses, schools, nonprofits, and organizations will be asked to participate by encouraging their families, employees, and clients to pick up a book! Also, people are asked to post on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram what they are reading and tag with #ReadGreenville.
