t the Groundbreaking Ceremony held Aug. 28, residents of Rolling Green Village hung their hopes for the leafy town-like community, fittingly, on a tree. The tree represents not just the green space and rolling hills that characterize the village for active seniors, but also the staff’s commitment to hearing from their residents, learning what they value most and offering the lifestyle they love in the most responsive, caring way possible. Rolling Green Village is a notfor-profit Life Plan Community, and was designed to serve independent, active seniors. The community now serves 650 seniors on its beautifully preserved 175 acres, where residents live independently and enjoy all the outdoor spaces, gathering areas, Wellness Center, pool and other amenities that make the community

such an enjoyable place to call home. If the need arises, short-term rehab, assisted living, memory care and longterm skilled nursing are also available. A 5-Star-rated senior community, Rolling Green Village gets rave reviews from residents, which is evident in the hopes they hung on the tree at the groundbreaking for the expansion now underway. One attendee who will soon be a second-generation resident wrote that she hopes “the staff will be as nice and considerate to residents as they were when my mom lived here.” Another resident is clearly enjoying himself, as he wrote that he hopes to live here until he’s at least 105 years old – and is currently 80. Several just hoped Rolling Green Village will continue offering what it does today: “the best place to retire.” Maintaining that reputation – and improving upon it – is what the expansion is all about.

EXPANDING ON A MISSION The scenic site of Rolling Green Village was donated by Hoke and Mildred Smith more than 30 years ago. Through the decades, the offerings have expanded, but the mission remains the same: serving seniors by providing an environment that enriches quality of life and fosters independence, in a setting nurtured by and established on Christian ideals. Becaue Rolling Green Village is a not-for-profit community, the local board can remain committed to that mission, while also partnering with the growing Upstate community to enrich the lives of its residents. The current expansion is a result of Rolling Green Village’s responsiveness. After gathering information through a market study, the board recognized that the thriving community needed new living spaces, including apartments, duplexes and cottages. The multimillion-dollar expansion will 2

The board also recognized the need for more gathering spaces, including a new village center (The Commons), central kitchen, several new dining venues, game and multipurpose rooms, art studio and library. those are being expanded as well. Peggy Dorsey and her husband Marion have already made plans to move into the new apartment building upon its completion in 2020, and say the decision was simple. “Rolling Green has a great location, they have interesting things to do, and we like the fact that it will be new,” Peggy said. “We visited, and it just seems comfortable there. The people who live there love it. And people always remark about how good the food is.” The popular dining program, which offers a wide array of cooked-to-order food at every meal, has a stellar satisfaction rating of 95%, and thanks to the expansion, it will offer even more options, including private dining, a bistro, and a restaurant with an open-kitchen design.

want the community to be,” she said. Nancy McKittrick has lived in Greenville all of her 86 years, and at Rolling Green Village for 16 years. She loves seeing the community grow and change while holding on to its core values. “I think it’s good to look to the future and plan ahead,” she said. “I’m glad to see them building this new addition, and I know it’s much needed. I’m very happy here and I know they’ll continue to do the great job they’re doing now.” Wood said the board wanted to keep the project local, and was thrilled to partner with Greenville’s Mavin Construction and Triangle Construction Co. The community also takes pride in being one of the largest not-for-profit employers in the area, employing more than 200 local people at Rolling Green Village to manage daily operations. Many more jobs will be provided by the expansion project. The community contributes more than $5 million to the local community each year, Wood said, and its strong financial track record has helped build an excellent
