Welcome

Welcome to the Twenty-Second Rose Ball – “Celebrating the Art of The Rose!” The Charity Ball Board and The Rose Ball Committee wish to thank each of you, our gracious supporters and friends, for making this night possible. The generosity of the many businesses, foundations, and caring individuals in Greenville is proof that good things happen when everyone works together. Over the past forty-two years, your generous contributions have enabled The Rose Ball to contribute over $2,650,000 to the physical, educational, and cultural needs of Greenville. The Charity Ball Board has no staff, thus the majority of the event’s net proceeds are contributed to the beneficiaries. What began with just a single rose and an idea with a cause, unfolded as one of the most regarded charitable events in the South. The Rose Ball, held biennially, was founded in 1971 by Mrs. Charles Daniel, Mrs. Ellison McKissick and other members of the Charity Ball Board to raise funds for the new St. Francis Hospital. The Rose Ball has continued its dedication to St. Francis by setting aside a portion of each Ball’s proceeds to help fund new community projects for the hospital. This year’s funds will be used to support the development of the Bon Secours St. Francis Health System–Neonatal Care Unit. In addition, thirteen other Greenville organizations will receive funding from tonight’s event: A Child’s Haven, Cancer Society of Greenville County, The Center for Developmental Services (CDS), Clement’s Kindness Fund for the Children, The Greenville Free Medical Clinic, Greenville Health System Medical Experience Academy (MedEx Academy), Greenville Literacy, Harvest Hope Food Bank, Meyer Center for Special Children, Triune Mercy Center, YMCA–Judson Community Center and Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Carolinas. Since The Rose Ball’s inception, over fifty-five agencies and programs in our community have benefited from its proceeds. The Rose Ball is Greenville’s most historic and most anticipated ball. Tonight, the Poinsett Club will be transformed by thousands of roses shared from the local gardens of our neighbors and friends, as well as those donated by professional florists and other businesses, to help us celebrate “The Art of The Rose.” The Rose Ball’s spectacular display of roses sets our event apart from so many others. More than two years of planning and timeless effort by the Charity Ball Board and The Rose Ball Committee went into making tonight’s Ball a reality. We wish to thank our many dedicated and talented volunteers who have worked diligently and tirelessly for many months. Without their enthusiasm we could not have made this evening a success and one that grows more memorable each year. Thank you for helping us continue the tradition of “The Grandest Ball of Them All” for another year. We hope you enjoy this wonderful and special evening. Henry Horowitz President, Charity Ball Board

Beth Nuckols Chairman, Rose Ball Committee

Beneficiaries

A Child’s Haven – This grant will help to build the largest treatment center for developmentally delayed, abused, and neglected children, ages two to five, in the Southeast. In the facility we are creating, many children and their families will find healing, transformation and a pathway towards a successful life.

Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital – With almost 2,400 babies delivered each year, the St. Francis Obstetrical Depar tment is inspired to provide state of the ar t equipment and compassionate care to new lives when they are most vulnerable. This current NCU design was once the standard of care but, this single-room setup crowds ten susceptible newborns, their families, the nurses’ area, and the vital equipment into one room. The noise can disturb and overstimulate the infants, and when one infant needs care in the night, the light must come on for all the sleeping infants. Studies have indicated effects such as ADD when an infant is prematurely exposed to such excess noise and light. Our new plan will develop individual patient rooms which will foster a secure healing environment for the infants. This will allow families to spend precious hours comfor tably with their baby while giving mothers private space for breastfeeding. In addition, a

new well baby nurser y will give mothers much needed rest and recuperation. Cancer Society of Greenville County – Funding from the Rose Ball for the prescription medication program will purchase costly, lifesaving medications for local cancer patients in our community. The Cancer Society of Greenville County’s goals for the program are to increase cancer patients’ sur vival rate, improve their quality of life, control side effects from cancer treatments, manage their pain, and offer hope for a future. Without this ser vice, many lives would be in jeopardy. The Center for Developmental Services (CDS) – CDS is a multidisciplinary center for children with disabilities and developmental delays that annually serves more than 6,500 children. CDS provides evaluations, therapeutic interventions, and family suppor t through a collaborative par tnership of seven distinct organizations. Suppor t for CDS will provide a redesigned, more user-friendly website that will include information in Spanish, which will assist the more than 600 Hispanic families who seek assistance through CDS each year. Clement’s Kindness – This fund for the children addresses the psychological, social, emotional and

Beneficiaries

financial needs of families impacted by pediatric cancer and other serious blood disorders. While the BiLo Children’s Charities Cancer Center works to heal the child, Clement’s Kindness works to heal the family. During diagnosis, treatment and recover y of a sick child, a family is suppor ted with nonmedical financial assistance: car repairs, household bills, oppor tunities to attend camp, family trips or to buy a wig or gas for the car. We believe that the smallest gesture makes the biggest difference in the lives of the families we ser ve. The Greenville Free Medical Clinic – This Clinic just celebrated 25 years of providing compassionate and quality medical and dental ser vices, prescription medications and health education for over 4,000 low income, uninsured Greenville County residents. Greenville Health System Medical Experience Academy (MedEx Academy) – MedEx Academy is a collaborative education program that provides an interactive learning and teaching environment that promotes the pursuit of clinical and non clinical healthcare careers. Philanthropic suppor t provides need-based academic development tools such as tutoring,

test preparation, and technology suppor t for bright students within MedEx Academy who are experiencing financial obstacles in fur thering their academic and career goals.

Greenville Literacy – Funding from the Rose Ball Grant will be used for student books and teacher materials critically needed so adult students can make educational level gains, obtain a WorkKeys Career Readiness Cer tificate or earn a GED. Obsolete network ser vers in the five Learning Center computer labs will also be replaced. Harvest Hope Food Bank – Funding for the Emergency Food Pantr y located on White Horse Road will allow Har vest Hope to add a much needed direct ser vice to hungr y families in Greenville. The “White Horse Crescent” area has an overall pover ty rate of 31.9%, double that of Greenville County. The new pantr y will have the capability to ser ve nearly 400 people per day and will also provide critical ser vices and referrals in order to help individuals improve their current situation. Meyer Center for Special Children – Par tial funding of a new minibus will provide safe,

Beneficiaries

reliable transpor tation for Meyer Center students from all areas of Upstate South Carolina. While attending the Meyer Center program, children with disabilities receive a quality education, along with speech, physical and occupational therapy. In 2012 our buses drove over 95,000 miles and provided daily transpor tation to/from school to over 75% of the children that attend the Center. We are so ver y grateful for the suppor t of our program. Project Host – This grant will help to prepare healthy, well balanced meals for children of low income families enrolled in after school enrichment programs. Last year, over 52,000 homemade meals were delivered to children with little access to food at home.

The Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Carolinas – Funding will allow for the installation of new laminate flooring to replace old carpet in 10 bedrooms at the Ronald McDonald House in Greenville. Old carpet is a harbor for odors and germs, and is difficult to keep clean. This is a critical concern for children with compromised immune systems. The new laminate flooring will also be easier to navigate and safer for children in wheelchairs, walkers or leg braces.

Triune Mercy Center – Mental illness, mental retardation and brain damage are rampant among Greenville’s homeless population. Triune, a nondenominational mission church which ministers to many of the city’s homeless, will use this money for its mental health professionals as well as related expenses.

YMCA Judson Community Center – At the YMCA, no one is turned away due to an inability to pay. Due to the extreme pover ty rates in the neighborhood we ser ve, financial assistance scholarships are provided to 100% of students attending the Judson YMCAs nationally accredited after school enrichment program. This grant allows the YMCA to continue the vital work of helping children reach their full, Godgiven potential.
