Zoos offer a rare kind of fun

Publisher & CEO Kevin S. Adelstein

efore Jstyle’s recent photoshoot at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, I hadn’t been to the zoo in more than a decade. As a child, visiting zoos with my family was one of my favorite pastimes. I have memories of going to the zoo here in Cleveland and interacting with animals I’d only seen before in books and on TV. Once at a zoo in Phoenix, Ariz., where my family vacationed each year, a baboon jumped at its glass enclosure and shocked my sister, who was a baby. We still remember and laugh about it. Along with growing up near my grandparents’ farm and having pets, I believe these early memories visiting zoos helped foster my deep care for animals and the natural environment, and wanting to do what I can to protect them. In college, I studied environmental psychology. My College of Wooster psychology professor, Susan Clayton, researched how visiting zoos relates to connecting to nature and, in turn, conservation. Her research shows visiting zoos helps create connections to animals. And feeling connected to animals at the zoo is associated with cognitive and emotional responses to climate change. Going to the zoo is a nourishing kind of fun adults don’t often get, amid managing deadlines, household tasks, families and to-do lists. After visiting the zoo twice for Jstyle’s fashion photoshoot and a quick walk

through to plan the photos, I felt a sense of wholesome happiness from spending moments with exotic animals I rarely think of as an adult. During the late September photoshoot, our three models – all volunteers from the local Jewish community – also shared moments with animals that were out that morning, most notably the elephants and giraffes. The local boutiques with which Jstyle partners helped us select outfits for the models that were perfect for a fall or winter day there. All in all, it was an experience to remember. Also covered in this issue is another experience to remember, yet on a more indoor, cultural side. The Temple-Tifereth Israel’s newly acquired silkscreen portraits by pop artist Andy Warhol depict 10 Jewish icons of the 20th century. After reading the story here, I recommend you see the art in person – it’s an opportunity both to experience Warhol’s work up close, and also learn about Jewish leaders who gave so much to our world. Also in this issue, we check in with Lauren Tamir, who created the outerwear brand HNTRESS one year ago with the aim of helping those who wear it feel powerful and well even through life’s challenges. And, we get a taste of The Last Page – the esteemed modern American restaurant bringing its singular concept to Orange’s Pinecrest. l should also mention this is the final issue of Jstyle in

2022. I hope you have a happy Chanukah and wonderful start to the new year, and we’ll be back in the spring. In the meantime, I encourage you to connect with us online at jstylemagazine.com and on social media, @JstyleMagazine. Most of all, I encourage you to put on a cozy jacket and take yourself to the zoo this season. While the weather may be chilly, the animals can help warm your mood. Text your friends and family photos of your favorite animals (mine are the red pandas) to share in the experience, and don’t be afraid to ask the zoo’s friendly staff questions. It truly gives a sense of awe and enjoyment we forget to seek as adults.

Pop art legend Andy Warhol’s Jewish icons find a new home at The Temple-Tifereth Israel Story and photography by Amanda Koehn

“Ten Portraits of Jews of the 20th Century” by Andy Warhol were gifted to The Temple-Tifereth Israel’s Museum of Jewish Art, Religion, and Culture by Joel L. Saltzman and the family of Leslie Wolf in his memory. The exhibition opened to more than 300 viewers Sept. 17.

ranz Kafka stares you square in the eyes when you step into the Temple Museum of Jewish Art, Religion, and Culture at The Temple-Tifereth Israel. His face, a silkscreen portrait that strikes you immediately with its bold blue colors and pronounced features, gives a slight smirk. It’s fitting for the Czech-Jewish author’s portrait position, top center, as he’s flanked by nine other Jewish icons who shaped life and culture in the 20th century, all in bold colors and Andy Warhol’s pop art style. Kafka and the nine other silkscreen portraits by Warhol are now on view at their new home in the Beachwood temple’s museum after being gifted by their two original owners with Cleveland roots. “Ten Portraits of Jews of the 20th Century” – a complete portfolio by Warhol – shows the period’s Jewish visionaries across disciplines. The exhibition opened Sept. 17 to over 300 attendees, and programming is planned through June to further explore it. “This really is one of those gifts that places the museum on par with a number of other major museums that are going to be able to attract a wider viewership,” says Rabbi Jonathan Cohen, senior rabbi at TTTI. “Through these prints, people can learn not only about Warhol but about these extraordinary Jewish figures – about their diversity, about the kind of fields that they affected. In other words, this is not only a gateway to art and to culture, but it can be a gateway to educational programs, to learning about history, geography, about these figures, about their impact in America and beyond America.” The Temple Museum, founded in 1950, collects ritual objects and fine art from Jewish communities and artists throughout the world. A somewhat hidden gem, it has over 2,500 pieces, including a robust print collection. Museum director Sue Koletsky calls the Warhol collection “the ultimate print portfolio for our museum.” “Just to be able to see Warhol up close in a gallery setting is exhilarating,” Koletsky says. “It changes how you think about the world really, as he certainly did. I think that we certainly want everyone in the community to come to

experience these pieces, to feel a sense of who these people are – who the portraits are about.”

INSIDE THE PRINTS “Ten Portraits of Jews of the 20th Century” were created in 1980 in New York City. The silkscreen portraits on paper depict Sarah Bernhardt, Louis Brandeis, Martin Buber, Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud, George Gershwin, Kafka, the Marx Brothers, Golda Meir and Gertrude Stein. The portraits began as Warhol’s drawings, based on archived photographs of the individuals. He then added blocks of color, suffusing the portraits with his modern, bold, graphic style. The prints are large – 40 by 32 inches. Warhol, who died in 1987, had a greatgrandmother on his mother’s side who was Jewish. He was also close friends with Jewish painter Philip Pearlstein, whom he met in art school, Koletsky says. The idea for the series originated with Warhol’s art dealer, Ronald Feldman, both Forbes and The New York Times reported ahead of shows featuring the prints in Los Angeles and New York City. It was also reported that Warhol didn’t choose the subjects, but Feldman consulted with Susan Morgenstein, the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington’s art director, and that Warhol wasn’t thought to be particularly invested in the subject matter. “What the series reflects, however, is the distinctively modern experience of knowing many famous people but rarely knowing in any depth what they are famous for,” art critic Ken Johnson wrote for the Times in 2008. “Lots of people know the name Gertrude Stein, but how many have actually read anything she wrote?” But the portraits show Warhol’s singular, undeniable talent; the series remains popular and has continued to be shown in galleries and museums. “(Warhol) saw the world in a totally different way – and he made all of us see the world in a totally different way,” Koletsky says. And through its own programming, The Temple is giving visitors unique opportunities to learn about who

at the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, and a Temple board member and Temple museum committee member, notes the portfolio represents “a major contemporary print acquisition that prominent museums across the country would desire to have in their holdings.” The works deepen The Temple’s contemporary art collection in a way that’s relevant to both religious and secular study, she says. “Like all art, seeing the works in person is inspiring,” Reich says in an email. “The scale, color and sharp installation in The Temple’s gallery creates a dynamic dialogue between formal elements and subjects. I find myself evaluating Warhol’s aesthetic decisions in detail – why that stroke of color? Why that offset register? While also considering how Warhol’s approach shifts my perception of the subjects themselves. How do I reconsider them, or ‘see’ them anew? It’s very exciting.”

HOW THEY WERE ACQUIRED The prints were gifted to the museum by Joel L. Saltzman and by the family of Leslie Wolf in his memory. Saltzman and Wolf had been friends since third grade when they both attended Park Synagogue Religious School. After they grew up, Wolf resided in California and Saltzman in Washington, D.C. Saltzman – who was at the TTTI exhibition opening, along with family members of Wolf – says Wolf had been a fan of Warhol and expressed interest in purchasing the Jewish icon portraits. As Saltzman had a friend who knew Warhol’s silkscreen printer, Rupert Smith, in New York, he called to ask if the set was available. It was, and the pair bought them and each enjoyed five of the prints in their respective homes for decades. Wolf eventually returned to Cleveland, where he enjoyed his prints until he

died in 2012. As Saltzman began to contemplate retirement and moving, he got offers from fine art dealers to purchase the prints for their customers. His brother instead suggested he donate them so the public could appreciate them long term, rather than having the portraits hang in “some affluent person’s dining room,” Saltzman says. He and Wolf’s family both ultimately decided to give the portraits a new home where they could be viewed all together by many and for years to come. The Temple museum became that place, as Saltzman’s brother and sister-in-law were married there and he’s gone to services at The Temple before. He’s also known Koletsky for 40 years, he explains. “It’s a great community and … we all agreed that the public would really benefit if this were open to the public,” says Saltzman, who lives in southwest Florida and also has an apartment in Beachwood.

LOOKING BACK, FORWARD The Temple Museum was founded by Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver in 1950 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of The Temple, according to the museum’s website. It was housed at The Temple’s original location in University Circle in Cleveland before moving to its current location in Beachwood. It was one of the first museums of Judaica in North America, and one of only a few synagogue museums with significant collections, according to the website. This new acquisition raises the museum’s profile even higher, Reich explains. “Warhol is among the most renowned contemporary artists, really one of a few ‘household names’ in our country,” she says. “Consequently, these works add greatly to an already impressive Temple collection. They also create new awareness and interest in The Temple’s collection overall, and encourage the broader art community to become more curious about how art is collected and shared by organizations outside conventional galleries and museums.” For that reason, an aim of the exhibition is to ensure the prints are accessible to those across Northeast Ohio and beyond.

Programming to highlight the artwork and the people depicted is being led by The Temple’s clergy and others, ongoing through June 2023. “I think what’s going to happen is that people are going to know that these prints are here,” Cohen says. “Our building is going to be appropriately open to be able to show these prints. We have a number of programs lined up that are going to feature these prints, and the idea is precisely to open our doors and allow members of the community – Jewish or non-Jewish, the arts community, the religious communities, a whole number of different sets of members of our community – to come out and to see these prints.” js

Cleveland Metroparks oo

Attracting more than a million visitors annually, the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo should not be overlooked this season. In fact, many animals prefer to be out in cold weather, and you may be able to avoid some of the crowds. “I’ve been here eight years, and I feel the animals are out more in the winter,” says Cynthia L. Roebuck, sales manager at the zoo. “They like to play in the snow. Obviously our Wilderness Trek over by Asian Highlands, there’s a lot of animals that live in the mountains and such – so your snow leopards, red pandas, they’re out a lot in the winter. But the elephants are out just as much, too.” She advises bundling up and wearing comfortable shoes for your visit, and notes the zoo’s upcoming Wild Winter Lights. On select evenings from Nov. 15 to Dec. 30, 1.5 million lights shine throughout the park, creating a winter wonderland as you walk or drive through. For more information and tickets, visit futureforwildlife.org/lights. During your zoo visit, Roebuck notes the François’ langur monkey in The Rainforest and the reindeer in the Wilderness Trek are two species that can’t be missed. And be sure to visit the baby rhino, Dalia, at the Daniel Maltz Rhino Reserve and baby gorilla, Kayembe, at the Primate, Cat & Aquatics building. “For the rhinos, most people don’t see the lookout viewing deck,” Roebuck says. “But if you look to the left, there’s a little tiny deck where you can get really close.” -Amanda Koehn

Foglietti Fostyk Plastic Surgery (216) 292-6800 • allnewyou.com

What’s New in Facial Rejuvenation? At Foglietti Fostyk Plastic Surgery we are always interested in utilizing a new technology that truly works. Gimmick treatments, by companies and practices interested in making money, are constantly popping up but sadly many of them prove ineffective or worse, harmful to patients. We tend to take a wait and see approach when it comes to new aesthetic treatments before we bring anything into our practice to treat our patients. We have been very impressed with a newer technology that takes traditional microneedling treatments to a new level. Professional microneedling uses rollers covered in mini, sterilized needles to make tiny holes in the top layer of your skin. These “micro injuries” stimulate your skin’s natural healing process by causing it to produce more collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep your skin firm and smooth. With the introduction of radio frequency (RF) to the microneedling process, it’s now possible to intensify the treatment of the skin by delivering the RF energy past the tip of each needle into much deeper layers of the skin without creating significant damage to the top layer. The focused RF energy introduced deep into the dermis, stimulates the production of new, strong collagen and elastin fibers that traditional microneedling cannot reach. Heat created by the added RF energy also works to constrict underlying skin layers, helping to smooth out lines and wrinkles while also offering an incredible solution for skin tightening around the eyes, jawline, chin, and neck. RF microneedling has additionally been proven to improve the overall surface of the skin by reducing the appearance of pores and diminishing the appearance of scaring. The benefits of RF microneedling are numerous. Unlike laser treatments, often prescribed for the same issues, RF microneedling is effective on all skin types and colors without concern for hyper or hypo pigmentation. As opposed to laser resurfacing, which requires downtime anywhere from days to weeks, the redness from RF microneedling generally resolves itself within 1-2 hours so no real downtime. Multiple treatments are required to achieve a similar effect as a laser application but the price packages we offer provide significant savings overall. Because radio frequency microneedling uses an electric current and the needles go deeper into the skin than traditional microneedling, the process is significantly less comfortable. However, we use a compounded topical anesthetic cream with a plasticized base prior to the treatment which greatly diminishes the discomfort. For people who consider themselves to have a low pain threshold, we also have a system which uses 50/50 combination of inhaled

oxygen and nitrous oxide to provide fast acting relief from discomfort, reduce anxiety and to promote relaxation. Nitrous, commonly known as laughing gas is one of the oldest sedatives in medicine and clears the system within 5-15 minutes so the patient may safely drive home. After the RF microneedling is complete we have regimen of reparative skincare products that we treat the patient with for the maximum corrective effect. The amount of time before someone sees results after their treatments will vary from patient-to-patient and are dependent on the degree of fine lines, wrinkles, and skin laxity a person has as well as a person’s age. Younger people will produce collagen and elastin more quickly than an older person; therefore, they will see results faster. We strongly suggest a consultation with our nurse* to create an individualized plan for treatment and to answer any specific questions you might have. *By law, the state of Ohio requires a minimum of an RN degree to administer these treatments. The Spa at Zeeba Clinic 29017 Cedar Rd., Cleveland, OH 44124 (440) 461-7999 | www.drbahmanguyuron.com

Meet Shawn, Zeeba Clinic’s Aesthetician and Makeup Artist Shawn Guyuron has more than 15 years of experience in the beauty and health industry. Her personal skin challenges guided her to a career in aesthetics. Her work centers on the philosophy that it is possible for anyone to attain healthy, balanced skin. From skin care expert to makeup artist, Shawn creates a fresh canvas that she can enhance further through professional makeup. She helps patients determine which skin rejuvenation procedures would benefit them. Shawn strives for each patient to feel heard, appreciated, and valued. Her patients receive an individualized assessment and a treatment plan for success. Shawn offers treatments including chemical peels, dermablading, facial waxing, brow shaping, brow tinting, product recommendations, makeup application, as well as Inmode Evoke and Evolve body contouring solutions. What Skin Care Products Do You Use? At Zeeba Clinic, we use ZO Skin Health, a medicalgrade skincare line. Their products treat all skin types, regardless of skin conditions, texture, and tone. ZO’s transformative products treat wrinkles, fine lines, redness, hyperpigmentation, laxity, oiliness, and sun damage, designed to improve overall complexion. They reverse damage from aging, genetics, diet, stress, environment, and the sun with simple-to-use daily regimens developed for your skin type. What Solutions Do You Recommend for Skin Remodeling and Tightening? Our patients are raving about their results from EvolveX and Evoke — the newest body contouring solutions from InMode. EvolveX is a body and skin tightening treatment that can be used on large areas of the body, including the abdomen, arms, hips, buttocks, and legs. The treatment uses radiofrequency and electromagnetic technology to tighten skin, eliminate cellulite, or tone the muscles. Evoke

is a hands-free facial rejuvenation treatment that uses radiofrequency energy to remodel face and neck tissue. With these treatments, patients can address nearly any area of the body to improve their figure and achieve a more youthful appearance. Patients love that it’s pain-free and comes with no downtime! What Treatment do You Suggest for First-time Clients? First and foremost, I begin my patients on a skin care regimen. A daily skin regimen helps prevent hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and sunspots. Skin is the largest organ of the body, so taking the time to educate my patients on what ingredients, products, and habits will work best for them is key to their skin health success. When do Patients Typically see Results after Starting a Skin Regimen? The high-quality products we use at Zeeba Clinic generally take about 12 weeks to see measurable results, which is equivalent to three skin renewal cycles. However, most patients see improvements within a few weeks. ZO Skin Health products exfoliate the dead layers of skin, diminish dark spots and blemishes, smooth skin texture, regenerate new glowing skin, and increase collagen production. The addition of retinols or retinoic acids to a regime helps keep skin in staying healthy, allowing you to have that youthful, healthy appearance. Please call Shawn at The Spa at Zeeba Clinic to take the first step to beautiful skin at 440-461-7999.

Meet Brianna, Zeeba Clinic’s Nurse Practitioner Brianna Patriarca is Zeeba Clinic’s board-certified nurse practitioner. She brings years of surgical nursing experience specializing in plastic surgery to the practice. Brianna is passionate about improving patients’ skin and self-esteem. She lives for the moment when a patient shares how happy they are with the results of a procedure. Brianna helps her patients become the best version of themselves, not someone new. What Services Do You Offer? I have the privilege to work alongside two outstanding plastic surgeons: Dr. Bahman Guyuron and Dr. Ali Totonchi. I specialize in skin rejuvenation and strive to deliver the best cosmetic care. Using a combination of skincare, Botox, fillers, laser, and InMode techniques, I create a customized patient plan to address their individual concerns and achieve their desired goals. I love to say, “Glowing skin is always in!” What Devices/Procedures Do Your Patients Rave About? Zeeba patients are always thrilled with the results of our Sciton laser and InMode devices. With the Sciton laser, I deliver many treatments for common patient concerns including wrinkles, rosacea, and brown spots. Personally, my favorite device is the Forever Clear BBL acne treatment. BBL, or BroadBand Light™, uses pulsed light and heat to remove redness, decrease active lesions, and kill acnecausing bacteria. It is a quick treatment with no downtime, making it a perfect lunch break appointment. People of all ages suffer from acne; it brings me joy to help a patient feel better in their skin. What is Your Favorite Treatment? I love Morpheus8 treatments. This is our most popular treatment and produces amazing results! Morpheus8 uses micro-needling in combination with radio frequency to

improve the tone, texture, and tightness of patients’ skin. It’s a great option for those looking to both prevent and/or correct! Winter is Coming. What Can Be Done to Protect Skin? ZO Health, a medical-grade skincare line, offers terrific hydration products to help with dry skin associated with the changing seasons. Also, the use of sunscreen is important to include in your skincare routine, even in the fall and winter. I love ZO sunscreens; they protect against both UVA and UVB rays from the sun, but also blue light from our screens and the environment. Many people don’t know that blue light exposure is more damaging than the sun due to its deeply penetrating rays! What is Your Go-To Treatment for Sun Damaged Skin? The BBL is my go-to treatment for sun damage. The laser uses pulsed light and heat to destroy sun damage and bring it to the skin’s surface where it exfoliates off naturally over the following week. Using a daily skin brightening retinol is also helpful to reverse sun damage. It is an easy and effective addition to one’s skincare regimen. At What Age Should You Start Skin Treatments? You are never too young to start taking care of your skin! That said, the younger you are, the easier it is to maintain your skin as you age. Call Bri to schedule a complimentary consultation to learn more about all our beauty options at 440-461-7999.

Cleveland Primecare Medspa

elcome to Cleveland Primecare MedSpa! Our mission is wellness from the inside out. Our team of licensed and experienced medical professionals have aesthetic specialty certifications in a multitude of minimally invasive treatments. No matter what you are looking to have done, utilizing the combined talents of our master injector and our aesthetic medical team will always produce safe and superior results. From Morpheus 8 to the relaxing Deidra Bobincheck, APRN-CNP wellness facial, we envelope MedSpa Medical Director our patients in an experience that culminates in positive energy and renewed appearance. At Cleveland Primecare Medspa we are very particular about the products we use and the procedures we perform. They must meet stringent criteria. We partner with only the top companies to purchase the best aesthetic sculpting, lifting, antiaging and rejuvenation products available. Specialty training on each product and routine updates set this MedSpa team apart. When looking at choosing a MedSpa some things to consider include: who is performing the injections? Sometimes cost is low because providers are new or not yet fully certified. When looking for natural results expect a few trips to the spa, rather than a quick fix. With exception, quick fixes don’t last. Rejuvenation and wellness take some time. They work at a cellular

level, engaging your own body systems to repair and restore your skin to its former tighter, softer self. Many treatments look good when you leave, but lasting treatments produce results that improve with time, not more money. We prefer to provide realistic and honest pricing. No add-ons and upselling. hen trading in iced coffees for warm spiced lattes to match the seasonal shift, so ushers in a changing of the wardrobe. As Northeast Ohio weather calls for thicker clothing, multiple layers and function over fashion, one does not need to sacrifice looking good for feeling good. Fall and winter fashion is here, along with the overabundance of trends that promise to provide something for everyone this year. Think chunky knits, leather jackets, bold and rich colors, black accents, quilted vests and bomber jackets, all with a slightly oversized fit when searching for those staple pieces this season. Both Ticknors Men’s Clothier in Beachwood and Kilgore Trout in Woodmere have you covered – literally.

Hunting Healing FOR

Unique outerwear line HNTRESS aims to provide strength through warmth

By Jane Kaufman

L

auren Tamir tried to keep the launch of her home-based business, HNTRESS, simple. She developed a patented pattern for a huntress cowl that she loved wearing and hoped to share with others. As HNTRESS’ CEO and creator, she planned to launch it in a single fleece fabric in two colors: midnight, a black, and forest moss, a green. But it was September 2021, and the supply chain issues that wreaked havoc for many businesses didn’t stop for hers. First, she learned the color midnight wasn’t available. She chose a second best, a color she thought was close to black. But when it arrived, it turned out to be a brown color similar to Cleveland Browns brown. She moved forward, though. “We have the materials, I’m launching either way,” Tamir remembers saying to the manufacturer. “Let’s offer an earth color, so we’re going with the brown.” There was more. “On top of that, they had accidentally sent a silver color,” she recalls. “So I ended up having 10 or 20 of those colors.” Faced with a limited window for

jstylemagazine.com

manufacturing the first cowls, Tamir decided to go ahead. Adding stress, her wedding was on Aug. 28, 2021, just as she was preparing to launch. And her manufacturer had a limited window for production. “I was like, I’m just going to roll with it. Let’s see what happens. It was too late to turn back because I couldn’t wait for material.” Tamir’s cowl is fashioned after a similar garment worn by Katniss Everdeen, the protagonist in “The Hunger Games,” which she first noticed when she watched the movie in 2016. Trying to heal from her own health challenges, she says she felt she had a lot in common with the character, whom she describes as a “badass,” or a modern-day female Robinhood. “I wanted to help others feel well no matter what,” she says. “And I was like, that’s what I needed. I need a physical, tangible symbol of strength that I could wear to help me get through. And as silly as it sounds, I went on Etsy and I was like, what is this thing she’s wearing? I found it was called a huntress cowl. So I ordered one from Etsy, and it just became like my modern-day war paint.”

She says something about the design provides both comfort and protection. Others noticed the cowl and would stop her to ask where she got it. The idea for HNTRESS – which recently hit its one year in business milestone – began to germinate then. “It feels like when you put your hand on your heart, or like when somebody gives you a hug when you just need that extra warmth and support,” Tamir says. “That’s what it feels like when you wear it. It’s almost like a weighted blanket for your heart.”

BEGINNINGS AND HEALING Tamir, 31, was born in Mayfield Heights. She was the first child in her family to be born in the United States after her family immigrated from Kyiv, Ukraine two years before. She was raised in Beachwood, attending Temple Emanu El in Orange and Chabad of Solon. She attended Beachwood public schools and graduated from Hawken School in Chester Township in 2009. Her mother, Irene Tatarchuk, worked as a teacher at Hebrew Academy of Cleveland in Cleveland Heights and Beachwood.

“Back in Kyiv, Ukraine, they weren’t really allowed to practice openly,” Tamir says of her parents’ religion. “… But when we came here, (they) didn’t skip a beat,” adding that her mother knew English, but her father, Alex Tatarchuk, didn’t. Her parents built an electrical contracting business called DIAL Electric in Solon – with each of the letters of the word DIAL standing for the first name of each family member, starting with Lauren’s older sister, Diana. “I was always a businesswoman at heart,” Tamir says, pointing to her parents’ example. “I always felt entrepreneurial.” She says her parents sometimes ask her questions about culture in the United States, even now. “I’m just in awe sometimes,” she says. “It’s like you guys came here with nothing. You built this. And you’re asking me this question? Like how did you do everything that you did? ... It catches me sometimes, still.” She attended the University of South Carolina for one year, but when the stock market took a dive, the university pulled its scholarships. She moved home, attended Cleveland State University and graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in marketing from its Fisher College of Business. Tamir spent much of her childhood and early adulthood battling several chronic and autoimmune diseases, beginning with migraines at 12 and adolescent fibromyalgia at 16. While in college and afterward, she studied natural health to try to heal herself and others, earning several online certificates. “I started using myself as a guinea pig,” she says. “Then I started helping others with what was working for me.” Tamir says she tried multiple pharmaceutical and nutritional solutions, including juice fasts, supplements, herbs and enzyme therapy. What helped her turn the corner on her physical health, she says, was confronting past trauma. “There were a lot of traumas that I hadn’t dealt with,”Tamir says. “I never had anything major, but I think that things pile up and our capacity to deal with things as kids, sometimes we don’t have the tools.” She says working on her conditioning

and healing the subconscious and her thoughts around being sick helped her feel better. “It wasn’t until I worked on my heart and my head that my body followed,” she says, adding that process took about a year and a half. Today, she says she feels “really good,” although she’s experienced a few migraines lately. Launching HNTRESS allowed Tamir to apply many of the life lessons she learned on her healing journey, she explains. The business concept partly came from her hope to provide the same sort of protection and comfort to others going through challenges. “I really only started healing when I started to live my life in spite of not feeling well,” Tamir says. “It’s like, both can happen at the same time.”

BUSINESS BRAINS After college, Tamir lived in Colorado and then rural Michigan, working as a natural health practitioner. When she returned to Cleveland in 2017, she broke a vow that she would never live here. “Now, there’s nowhere I’d rather be,” she says, adding that she loves the Cleveland Metroparks, the nightlife, the different neighborhoods and her own family. After she and her now-husband, Tal Tamir, moved back to Cleveland, he took a job at a property management business and she landed an internship at a Cleveland food delivery business called Sprinly, where she learned about business operations. Tal had already obtained his real estate license, and both were interested in trying their hand at real estate. In 2019, the two opened Premier Cleveland Investing, their real estate business devoted to investor-

owned properties. She works on the operations side of the business. Tamir says the business has a strong emphasis on integrity, and that its aim is to help Cleveland, tenants and investors through responsible property management. “We really want to bridge that gap,” she says. Around the time the couple launched Premier Cleveland Investing, Tamir took part in a Women IN Philanthropy Jewish Federation of Cleveland coaching group, where Wendi Pavlofsky was the facilitator. The group’s focus was on incorporating philanthropy for Jewish causes into one’s life and professional work. Pavlofsky and Tamir had one-on-one time at Pavlofsky’s kitchen table at a time during the COVID-19 pandemic when group meetings were not held. “Lauren was engaged at the time,” Pavlofsky recalls. “And she had several different things she was working on. She was working on her wedding, she was working on her new protege for her (HNTRESS) business, she was working on some real estate ventures.” Pavlofsky says she was struck by Tamir’s independent approach. “I thought at the time, this is an incredibly intuitive girl who is excited just about life and her dreams,” Pavlofsky says. As the group discussed issues relating to the pandemic, “I saw a strength in Lauren,” Pavlofsky says. “It was almost like she was getting stronger and stronger. I knew

that this girl was going to be a success, and I knew that she was going to pursue, no matter how hard it was or how many hurdles she had to overcome, that she was going to figure this out professionally.” On the philanthropic side, while HNTRESS is a young business, it has donated one cowl for every 10 sold. Tamir also sent 120 cowls to Ukraine at the beginning of the Russian invasion.

ONE YEAR IN A year after the launch of HNTRESS, Tamir has sold out of the silver color, and the accidental brown – which she calls earth – has taken off. The midnight black is in stock, as is the forest moss. Her husband is the small business’ chief financial officer. The couple also donate annually to Jewish causes and make a point of paying it forward on a daily basis. Tamir considers herself “very spiritual,” and that a lot of Judaism’s basic principles line up for her. “I really live my life knowing that I’m guided by something bigger,” she says. “All the Jewish principles just feed right into that.” She has never been to Israel and is looking forward to going for a cousin’s bar mitzvah in 2023. “I’ve always had this pull to go,” she says. HNTRESS’ marketing model depends on word of mouth and social media, primarily Instagram, but Tamir also learned how to set up her own website to promote her line. “It’s like a whole new category of

outerwear,” she says. “So, it’s been more of an education curve than I thought. I thought people, just like the second they put it on, they (would) get it,” adding that the cowls combine “all the best things you love about a hoodie, vest and scarf into one everyday staple.” She also sought the protection a patent affords prior to launching, but it was still pending at the time. It came through June 14. Now, she’s sold at some events, such as Small Business Saturday and Market 17, both at the Van Aken District in Shaker Heights, as well as several vendor events. “I’m just doing as many events as I can,” she says. Speaking with Jstyle in September, Tamir was planning to host a booth at a women in professional business event in New York City at the end of October. “I’m excited just to keep educating people about HNTRESS and why they would benefit from it – why they need it in their life and also to make new SKUs (stock keeping units), so different materials, different designs, and just continue expanding, educating and getting the name, my brand and myself out there,” she says. js

Nosh News Appetizing bites about Jewish chefs,

restaurateurs and community staples

By Amanda Koehn and Becky Raspe

Le Chaim kosher restaurant now open Le Chaim, a new east side kosher restaurant, opened in August at 14417 Cedar Road in South Euclid. Owned by Haim and Devorah Leibowitz of Beachwood, Le Chaim is under the supervision of Cleveland Kosher. The restaurant’s menu boasts items like pita, baguette or wrap sandwiches with beef kabob, falafel or grilled chicken; grilled chicken and schnitzel salads; and a selection of burgers, with sides like French fries and green beans. It also serves children’s items like hot dogs and chicken nuggets. The restaurant also does small catering orders, and is awaiting a liquor license, Haim Leibowitz tells Jstyle. He says the space, which previously housed Sababa Cuisine, made sense because it is centrally located in the Jewish community. And while Le Chaim’s name is similar to his name, it is not named after him, Leibowitz says. Its name stems from wanting to connect people over food. “We’re trying to translate the idea of saying ‘l’chaim,’ that customers can come here and say it together, blessing each other,” he told the CJN in August. “Our goal is to bless each other and make everyone happy. Our goal in life is to help out all Jews.”

Creating a Kind of One Experience

Todd Leebow and Gary Shamis start at The Last Page By Carlo Wolff

W

hen Todd Leebow was living in Los Angeles, a friend advised him to read the last page of a script first. That way, he could tell whether reading the whole thing would be worthwhile. “Start at the last page, where most of the meat is,” Leebow says in an interview at The Last Page, the 200-seat restaurant he and fellow founding partner Gary Shamis opened in Orange’s Pinecrest mixed-use development in February 2021. “If you start with that, you can navigate how you want to enjoy your whole experience.” Asked about the derivation of his modern American restaurant’s name, Leebow says, “The best way to say it is, the best stories come together on the last page.” Leebow’s and Shamis’ hospitality group, Kind of One Concepts, manages The Last Page. Its clever name, too, carries meaning. “You know the phrase ‘one of a kind?’” asks Leebow, who is also CEO of the family-owned company Majestic Steel

jstylemagazine.com

USA. “One of a kind can be perceived as one of many, where with Kind of One, we’re looking to create a unique concept, something you’ve never experienced before.” Whether you’re eating The Last Chicken Sandwich (with pickled banana peppers, yum yum sauce and iceberg lettuce, on a Hawaiian bun), a side of crispy potatoes and a beer on tap, or sitting on the patio sharing dishes with friends, the idea is “to have a Kind of One experience every time.” Restaurants were the key niche at SS&G, Shamis’ former CPA firm, and he became “infatuated in terms of servicing them,” he says. “Friends say I’m a foodie,” says Shamis, who is now CEO of Winding River Consulting, a company he founded in 2016. “I’m not a foodie, I’m a restaurant person. I like the ambiance, the service. I like the food, I like the creativity.” In a sense, The Last Page is a laboratory for both men. “Todd and I have a lot in common with respect to us being entrepreneurial business owners,” Shamis says. “I think one of the commonalities is we really

like to build things. There’s nothing I like more to do than build something. And when he approached me and we talked about this, the whole idea was to be able to build something that would be challenging to do. Here we are 18 months later, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve been able to build.”

A TEAM APPROACH The underlying tenets of their restaurant are providing a memorable experience for the customer and continuous improvement – a process veteran accountant Shamis explores in his business books. Every day, both men suggest, is hard work. Every day is also a joy. Since The Last Page opened during the COVID-19 pandemic, business has steadily increased, largely due to word-ofmouth and social media. Where brunch used to draw 12, it now hosts 200. “I always say that the restaurant is a live production every single day and so therefore, every day is unique,” says Leebow, who in 2007 moved back to Ohio from Los Angeles, where he was launching his own film company, to run

Majestic Steel. That means “you have to bring consistency to the guest, and the guest is also unique.” “When you really get behind the scenes, this is all based upon people with talent,” Shamis elaborates. The talent roster at The Last Page, Shamis says, includes Brad Race, head of culinary, plucked from the hot Los Angeles restaurant Catch LA; executive chef Logan Abbe, formerly of Sawyer’s and The Greenhouse Tavern; and Jordan Rolleston, culinary director and former private chef at Majestic Steel. “I like to think we’re strategic and smart, but we’re also a little bit lucky, and we have put together just this amazing team of people,” says Shamis, who served as chair of the Cleveland Jewish Publication Company Board of Directors from 2007 to 2010. The CJPC publishes Jstyle. As Shamis’ career seasons, he says, “I like the energy of working with younger people. This has given me the opportunity to spend time with Todd, with our chef, our team, getting to meet our managers. To me, it’s just been a lot of fun.” Shamis attends The Temple-Tifereth Israel in Beachwood. Leebow and his family primarily attend B’nai Jeshurun Congregation in Pepper Pike. At The Last Page, Shamis says, Leebow is the visionary. He’s the stabilizer.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME What interested Leebow in hospitality? His life, outside family, revolves around meetings and meals. “I’ve always enjoyed hospitality. I like taking on new challenges, and I saw an opportunity to bring something unique to the market,” he says. Leebow has lived in Miami, Los Angeles and New York. “In coming back to Cleveland, I wanted to bring something that was unique, that you might find more in a larger market when it comes to the hospitality side of it. “Gary and I have known each other my whole life and worked together, and he had a lot of experience in the hospitalityrestaurant space,” he adds. “What makes a community is places to go, gathering places,” Leebow says. “To

me, a restaurant is that. That’s what The Last Page is. It’s a place where you can go and share great food and enjoy yourself with friends, family, with business colleagues.” While the restaurant won’t turn away solo diners who make themselves comfortable at one of its two bars, the goal is a sense of community generated by unique food. “Our dishes are intended to share,” Leebow says. “Everything that comes out of the kitchen is a scratch dish, so our chefs are making things and all of the dishes are unique in terms of classic dishes, but executed with global influences and flavors.”

CHALLENGES AND PLANS Not only did COVID-19 push back The Last Page opening for about a year, staffing continues to be an issue. “The labor market is definitely challenging,” Leebow says. “We’re fortunate we have a great management team, but getting people to come and buy into what we’re doing and be a part of it – you have to be a part of it – it’s they who make the difference.” The five things guests care about in a restaurant are the space, the food, the beverages, the service and the vibe, Leebow says. The last encompasses everything from unique cocktails like Grapefruit Buzz (apple brandy, Cointreau and more) to unusual dishes like Broken Egg Fried Rice (kimchi, spinach, egg yolk). The experience should always be different, yet consistent. The place is multi-textured, its palette the palette of success: gold, silver, earthy yet at the same time, highly polished. “Every detail is unbelievable, even the bathrooms,” Shamis says. “We have four individual bathrooms, every one of which was designed differently, and every one is beautiful. Who else does that? You walk in here and see how the bar is highlighted. The place feels good. And through our culinary team, I think it’s some of the most amazing food I’ve ever had.”

jstylemagazine.com

And the only one of its kind in Cleveland. “This is going to be one per market,” Shamis says. “We have a really talented group. We want to keep them busy, we want to challenge them, so we’re going to be looking at some other concepts in Cleveland with our team, but not The Last Page. Out of Cleveland it’s going to be The Last Page.” “We think this restaurant will translate very well to many markets,” Leebow adds. At the same time, Kind of One is upgrading the former Village Square Pizza in Woodmere, which Kind of One bought from longtime owner Joe DeGaetano this spring. Village Square used to deliver to Leebow’s home, so buying it “was nostalgic to me,” he says. Plans call for updated ingredients and presentation, and “we’ll do it our way,” he says. “Restaurants are synonymous with challenges,” Shamis says. “If it was easy, there would be a lot more people who are successful. But neither one of us likes easy.” Their hard work is paying off with acclaim. Not only did Cleveland Magazine name The Last Page the best new restaurant of 2022, it also won for best brunch, best cocktails and, in Abbe, best chef. “If we do this right, when we open up in Miami or Chicago we’re going to do it right there, with local touches,” Shamis says. When he and Leebow get together every month or so, Shamis says, “I know exactly what he’s going to say: He’s questioning me on what could we do better. Every single time.” js

Shades of Gray By Meghan Walsh Gray furniture pieces and accents are freshening up spaces this year. The color is prominent in most aspects of interior design and can be found in common living spaces, bedrooms and dining rooms, says John Ferrato, owner of Wayside Furniture in Akron. Specifically, upholstered headboards remain popular, whether they are fully upholstered or a mix of wood and fabric or wood and leather, he explains, also incorporating gray and other moody shades. “In upholstery, like living room furniture, the grays and taupes and linens are still 90% of the volume,” he says. “Blues are still coming up a little bit in upholstery.”

Most home appliances, such as laundry machines, ovens, lights and window shades, can be automated to turn on at the push of a button, which can be on a remote control or your smartphone. “This past May, Hunter Douglas launched Bluetooth technology, so there’s Bluetooth in our (window) shadings as well as our hand-held remotes,” says Joel Herman, owner of Herman Textile Window Fashions in Highland Heights, which carries Hunter Douglas window treatments. “Customers can use their

from knowing that any problems that may arise with the technology can be answered or examined from a distance. “If the customer perceives there’s an issue, Wi-Fi can identify remotely if there is in fact a problem,” says Bob Somrak Jr., vice president of operations at Somrak Kitchens in Bedford Heights. “It can send a customer an email if there’s a suggestion to try something before a service technician is called.” Kitchen appliances can be automated, and some even have customizable automation features. Each appliance can run on a schedule that you set up or communicate with “sister” appliances, such as a washer and dryer. “The machines will remember the previous cycle, or they’ll deal with the most frequent cycle to minimize energy consumption for electricity and gas,” Somrak says. “In other words, the washer can communicate with the dryer and the dryer understands.” This communication between appliances can be done through more than just washers and dryers. Ventilation systems can also be automated and put in communication with stovetops to prevent any alarm systems from going off when not necessary. “Today, we’re seeing ventilation tied into smart technology where the vents can literally sense that there’s still heat or smoke over the cooktop,” Somrak says. “So it’ll continue to have the vent run a longer

cycle than normal. Then, it automatically shuts off when it senses that smoke, odor and heat are eliminated.” Customization, whether it be through appliances that can communicate through your Wi-Fi or setting up lights and window shades to your preferences, is a valuable thing to have in your home, as it also saves you money. By having lights or other appliances turn off automatically during the day, you use less electricity, which makes your energy bills lower. “You can have them automated to be at certain dimming levels, so you can actually save a lot on electricity costs,” says Rob Myers, president of K+ Integration Systems, LLC in Chagrin Falls. You can also save on power bills

through automated heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, which Myers recommends be one of the first things you automate. “You can automate (HVAC systems) based on time of day, or the temperatures outside or inside and the weather,” Myers says. Imagine the temperature is always comfortable, the lighting never too bright or too dim, and during the day, you can simply look out the window to see the beautiful scenery around – all at the touch of a button. js Publisher’s note: Joel Herman is a member of the Cleveland Jewish News Foundation Board of Directors.
