EDITOR'S LETTER APRIL-MAY 2019

Hello and welcome to this month’s issue! We are reflective and thankful to announce that we have made it to three years, and I am humbled and grateful to reach this milestone! There was a time when three years of publishing was not in the forecast when planning the journey. Or so I thought. God had other plans and yes, I am so glad that His plans prevailed. Though it has been an interested and enriching journey it has not been easy. However, it has most definitely been rewarding and full of lessons. Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do. -Pele We have managed to grow the platform and build an audience while keeping the integrity of the publication. For me that was always very important and a key motivational point. I wanted to give a voice to those who felt silenced and to offer them opportunities to speak their truth to power. Here at the magazine my staff of dedicated hard working people share this journey with me as we strive to bring you original and valuable content that can enhance our daily lives and shared experiences. We appreciate the support and we are very proud and humbled to be able to continue to serve you! Let your light shine and continue to change the game. Much love!! Chea Chea

EDITOR'S LETTER APRIL-MAY 2019

The journey is never ending. There's always gonna be growth, improvement, adversity; you just gotta take it all in and do what's right, continue to grow, continue to live in the moment. --Antonio Brown

Fashion Can Have Many Meanings! By: Chea K. Woolfolk Craig Shanklin Fashion has a different meaning to most everyone. Fashion choices, like one’s fingerprints are unique to the person and are often a means of expression. Society has many times tried to dictate fashion rules without giving individuals choices. In this month’s issue we wanted to showcase how simply changing accessories and adding pops of color can change the whole vibe of one signature piece. One dress worn with different accessories can spawn a variety of new and inspired outfits. By adding new bolder jewelry styles, or brighter splashes of color you may “go out of your comfort zone”, and get a fresh new fashion feel. Going out of your comfort zone will increase the number of items in your wardrobe that you wear on a regular basis. When this happens you will start to see the items different, with more wearable possibilities. This as great way to overcome wardrobe dullness and to increase your self confidence and showcase your glow.

If you open your mind to things you would have never thought to wear before you will become less predictable in other parts of your day as well. . If you’ve shied away from hats and headgear think about adding some festive coverings to your seasonal accessories. Make them bold and colorful so that they add some zesty vibrant appeal to your style Choosing what to wear when you’re stuck in a wardrobe funk can sometimes make you feel tired, and stressed, and that is not a good thing. The goal should be to have fun selecting your wardrobe. If you feel the need you can add a little whimsy to your style by finding fun a ccessories that are conversation pieces. If you notice in one of the photos our editor-in-chief is wearing a bold pair of custom earrings. that are beautiful, vibrant and worthy of striking up a conversation. They cause others to smile and ask questions, and this is a great way to embrace the joy that accessories can bring to your wardrobe and to others. Be sure to be bold and take chances with your fashion choices and maybe one day we will see you on the runway as an influencer or a style coordinator. Be sure to make your impression with your style and be sure to keep them guessing!!

6 NUTRITION TRENDS AND FADS EXPLAINED

By: BPT

The expanded variety of health and wellness options available today can be confusing for consumers who are trying to learn all they can to make the most informed, healthy choices for themselves and their families. Below, Dr. Nicole Avena, assistant professor of neuroscience at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and visiting professor of health psychology at Princeton University, explains six popular nutrition trends including sustainable snacks, new plant-based milks, prebiotics and probiotics and the latest on gummy supplements vs. traditional vitamins: 1. When it comes to a caffeine buzz, choose matcha over coffee. A premium green tea powder from Japan, matcha is used for drinking as tea or as an ingredient in recipes. While coffee and matcha have about the same amount of caffeine, matcha packs lots of great antioxidants. Check the label to make sure it has been tested for heavy metals, as some matcha can contain lead from the soil where it was grown.

CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

2. Shelf-stable probiotics have some advantages over refrigerated. Only two strains of probiotics are shelf-stable, whereas different and diverse strains can be present in refrigerated probiotics. But, shelfstable probiotics have the advantage that they can be used in other food products, like granolas, butter, soups, etc. Just don't mess with the packaging or open blister packs until you want to use them, as they are packed for preservation. Dead probiotics won't harm you, but they don't have any health benefits either. Remember there are different probiotic strains for different issues: i.e., you don't want to take a digestive or immunity probiotic for vaginal health issues. Instead, try ProB as it contains two strains of lactobacilli, which are optimal to promote vaginal health. 3. Algae oil trumps fish oil and olive oil. Algae oil is vegetarian and a source of omega-3s and DHA (good fats to support brain health). Algae oil is safe to use in pregnancy (when eating too much fish can be harmful because of mercury) and is heart healthy (studies show it lowers cholesterol and triglycerides). It also has more monounsaturated fat than olive oil. 4. Cow's milk is healthier than almond milk. Despite its popularity, almond milk often has less than 2 percent actual almonds in it, has a lot of added sugar, and is not necessarily better for the environment because it takes five liters of water to grow one almond. 5. 1000 mcg's of Folate with vitamin D and calcium is essential in a prenatal vitamin. The nutrients in your prenatal vitamins are crucial pre- and postpartum, especially if you are breastfeeding. cheakwoolfolk.com

6. Gummy vitamins are just as effective as pills and chewables. The best way to get needed nutrients is through food, but, people don't always have eating habits that provide them with all the nutrition they need. Others have deficiencies that diet alone can't resolve. Supplements can fill the gap, but people are more likely to take their supplements regularly if they taste good and they're convenient. Pills require a liquid to take them with, they're not tasty and sometimes leave an unpleasant aftertaste! Gummies can be a good option, and clinical tests show that their absorption is equivalent or better than traditional vitamin pills. vitafusion offers more than 30 types of gummy vitamins, with no artificial flavors, high fructose corn syrup, gluten or dairy. Nicole Avena, Ph.D., is a research neuroscientist and pioneer in the field of food and nutrition. She is also the author of What to Eat When You're Pregnant.

8 things to tell your physician anesthesiologist before surgery

BPT

There is no such thing as TMI (too much information) when it comes to communicating facts about your health with your physician anesthesiologist before surgery or a medical procedure. You might not think taking ginkgo biloba for memory, using medical marijuana for pain, smoking or snoring are relevant, but these supplements, drugs and conditions are among the eight things you should disclose for your own safety. "Your physician anesthesiologist isn't interested in judging you, but rather wants to provide the safest, most effective anesthesia and pain relief," said Dr. Linda J. Mason, M.D., FASA, president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). "Your safety is our priority and this information is essential so we can adjust your anesthesia and pain management to ensure the best outcome." NOMADIC

28

Anesthesiology was the first medical specialty to focus on championing safety, and physician anesthesiologists have continued to lead the way in ensuring patients receive safe care. ASA urges patients to be forthcoming about their health information. Be sure to tell your physician anesthesiologist if you: * Take anything for your health, including: - Medications - Many medications can affect anesthesia or pain management. While some medications (such as blood pressure medications) should be continued even during surgery, others may need to be paused for a day or longer. Discuss all your medications so the physician anesthesiologist can determine the best course of action. - Supplements - Certain supplements can interact with anesthesia. Many people take Ginkgo biloba to improve their memory or ginseng as an immune system booster, but both can increase the risk of bleeding. Tell your physician anesthesiologist what supplements you take and the dosage. * Smoke. Smoking damages your heart and lungs, can lead to breathing problems during or after surgery, and increases your risk of: developing pneumonia; needing a ventilator to help you breathe after surgery; suffering a heart attack during or after surgery; and reducing blood flow, which slows healing and increases the chance of infection. Your physician anesthesiologist will likely ask you to stop smoking at least a week or more before the procedure. * Use marijuana. Marijuana has a sedative affect and can interact with anesthesia, so tell your physician anesthesiologist if you partake, whether by eating edibles, smoking or other methods. * Drink alcohol. More than two alcoholic drinks a day can increase your risk of side effects from anesthesia as well as affect the amount of anesthesia you'll need. Your physician anesthesiologist needs to know if you drink and may request you abstain before surgery. *

CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

N O M A cheakwoolfolk.com DIC | 24

Snore. If your snoring is caused by sleep apnea, anesthesia is riskier because sleep apnea slows breathing and increases sensitivity to side effects. Sleep apnea also can make it more difficult for you to regain consciousness after surgery, so the physician anesthesiologist may adjust the sedative, keep you in recovery longer and prescribe non-opioid pain medications. * Have had heat stroke or suffered a stroke. If you or a family member have ever had heat stroke or suffered a stroke tell your physician anesthesiologist. Both can increase your risk of having a potentially deadly reaction to anesthesia called malignant hyperthermia, which causes muscle rigidity and a sudden high fever. * Have had a reaction to anesthesia. It's important to share if you've had a bad reaction to anesthesia during previous procedures. Your physician anesthesiologist will ask detailed questions about what happened to adjust your anesthesia and prevent it from recurring. * Have chronic health issues. Many chronic health conditions can have repercussions for anesthesia, including diabetes, heart disease, allergies, liver or kidney disease, asthma, high blood pressure, obesity and seizures or other neurological disorders. You should discuss these issues and any concerns you have when you talk to your physician anesthesiologist before surgery. For example, if you are concerned about taking opioids, your physician anesthesiologist can discuss alternatives. To learn more about preparing for surgery, visit asahq.org/wscpreparingforsurgery and download and print the Preparing for Surgery: An Anesthesia Checklist and The Path to a Safe Surgery: Preparing for Anesthesia Begins With You to take with you prior to surgery. To learn more about the critical role physician anesthesiologists play before, during and after surgery, visit www.asahq.org/WhenSecondsCount.

Family planning and IBD: BPT to  Expert answers common questions BPT Having a baby is a wonderful experience, but for many women, health issues can cause them to second-guess their ability to become a mom. Women with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) may feel as though pregnancy is out of the question. This isn't necessarily true. In the U.S., 1.6 million people have IBD - a group of disorders that include Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Of those, roughly half are women who will consider getting pregnant one day. When it comes to IBD and planning for a family, it's natural to have questions and concerns. "The IBD Parenthood Project provides guidance to women with IBD on the continuum of care and best practices for managing their IBD throughout all phases of family planning: trying to conceive, pregnancy and postpartum," says Rajeev Jain, MD, AGAF, FACP, IBD Parenthood Project Co-Chair and Gastroenterologist at Texas Digestive Disease Consultants. Led by the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) with support from the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation and the patient support network Girls With Guts, this program aims to empower women with IBD, their loved ones and health care providers to have open conversations about preconception, pregnancy and post-delivery care.

www.ckwmag.com

April/May 2019

Dr. Jain offers answers to the most common questions he receives from women about IBD and family planning: In your experience, what are the top concerns women with IBD have when planning for a family? What are the key steps you would urge her to take before she gets pregnant? Answer: Many women with IBD are concerned that they won't be able to achieve a healthy pregnancy and worry about factors such as IBD medication being harmful to their baby. Studies show that women who have their Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis under control, and who have never had surgery, can get pregnant at the same rate as other women in the general public. For women to have a successful pregnancy, their IBD should be under control; avoiding a flare is the most critical aspect to achieving a healthy pregnancy. What types of health care providers should a woman see to ensure she has a healthy pregnancy? Answer: Pregnant women with IBD should work with a maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) subspecialist who will coordinate care with her delivery provider and gastroenterologist (GI). A pregnant patient with IBD should be monitored by both a GI, who has a clear expertise in IBD, and an obstetric provider, ideally an MFM subspecialist, with further assistance from other care providers. An obstetrician (OB) or MFM subspecialist should lead pregnancy-related care, and the GI should lead IBD care, with excellent communication among all providers consulted during pregnancy. What is an MFM subspecialist? Answer: An MFM subspecialist is an OB with an additional three years of formal education who is board-certified in maternal-fetal medicine, making them highly qualified experts and leaders in the care of complicated pregnancies. An MFM subspecialist is distinct and different from a "high-risk OB." Are IBD drugs harmful to take while trying to get pregnant or during pregnancy? Answer: Most women who are in remission when they get pregnant stay in remission throughout pregnancy. Stopping medication can cause a flare, which is a risk to a healthy pregnancy. Treating IBD with the appropriate medication may help reduce a woman's risk of a flare and can help lead to a healthier pregnancy. Will my children have IBD? Answer: Up to 3 percent of children with one parent who has IBD will develop the disease (this means about 97 percent will not get IBD). Are women able to breastfeed while on IBD medication? Answer: Yes, in many cases, mothers with IBD who breastfeed can simply follow standard nutritional recommendations, which may include increasing the amount of food in her diet or adding omega-3 fatty acids. To download the patient toolkit and learn more about pregnancy and IBD, visit www.IBDParenthoodProject.org. AGA's IBD Parenthood Project is funded through support from UCB, a global biopharmaceutical company. CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

Get in touch with your senses for a better night's sleep BPT Special Report

In a world where everyone is constantly on-the-go, getting a good night's sleep can be a daunting challenge. If you're having trouble sleeping, remedy the situation by using your own senses right in your bedroom! Here are three easy and effective tips for using your senses to help contribute to a better night's sleep and, in turn, bolster your overall well-being:

CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

cheakwoolfolk.com

Scent sense: Sprinkle a few drops of lavender oil on your pillow. Lavender is associated with lower blood pressure, heart rate and skin temperature - all relaxing ingredients for a good night's sleep. And, as an extra perk, lavender has been shown to reduce anxiety, making it a great essential oil to put on your pillow for those nights when concerns of the day are keeping you awake. Touchy feely: Make sure that you have cozy, quality bedding, which will permeate your sense of touch throughout the night. In a U.S.-based survey conducted by the American Down and Feather Council (ADFC), 70 percent of consumers surveyed who use down and feather products agreed they get a better night's sleep with down and feather bedding. Furthermore, 55 percent agreed there are health benefits to sleeping with down and feather products, because they: * Regulate your body temperature - Down and feather is a natural material that wicks away moisture and perspiration, allowing it to quickly evaporate rather than trapping it. * Provide proper support - Down and feather pillows conform to the body more naturally than many synthetic fibers or foam pillows. * Offer the sleep-inducing benefits of warmth without weight - Down is nature's best insulator! Soothing sounds: Try using a white noise machine to mask background sounds, thereby creating a more serene environment. When used to promote healthy sleep, white noise helps to drown out sounds that might otherwise prevent you from falling asleep or wake you up while asleep. So, if you're having trouble sleeping, try listening to your senses to help contribute to a better night's sleep - and see what a difference the quality of your bedding can make!

Face the Spring with a Fresh Start The winter Netflix and chill season has finally ended, it’s time to come out of hibernation. Spring forward just in time for Pre-Derby and Prom season with a fresh face. Are you interested in keeping a dewy complexion with minimal effort this season? If you have ever considered chemical peels, allow me to share some tips and benefits of this treatment. I know the word “chemical peel” sounds a little scary but don’t be, this procedure is just a deeper level of exfoliation. There are levels to this process, light peels are offered in the spa, medium peels are available in the med spas, and deep peels in the dermatologist/plastic surgeons office. Before you jump face first in the world of peels, it’s important to prepare the skin, to see what type of shape your skin is in and what it can tolerate. Always prepare the skin with a prepeel facial and follow up post peel with sunscreen with a SPF of 30. During this facial ask your esthetician for a complete skin analysis & (enzyme facial). If your face is unable to handle the heat from an enzyme (you may want to hold off on a chemical peel). Please never request a peel cold turkey again, please don’t do it!! Anti-Aging Now let’s discuss the benefits of peels. The skin cell turnover rate slows down around age 25, this is around the time the fine line began to appear so early intervention is key. Glycolic acid is the preferred alpha hydroxy acid derived from sugarcane and can quickly penetrate deep into the deeper layers of the skin.

Benefits include: Improve appearance fine lines and wrinkles, support healthy collagen production, helps skin restore &keep moisture. Glycolic acids are best for dry and mature skin types Hyperpigmentation: Also known as our acne battle scars, any discolorations in the skin can be an issue. It is estimated 65% of African American, 53% of Hispanic/Asians suffer with dark patches according to (Multicultural Skin Treatments, J.Lee&N.Bhatti p.7).Lactic acid is another alpha hydroxy acid derived from milk. This acid is one of the gentler types. Benefits include: Skin lightening, reducing wrinkles and restores moisture. Lactic acids work well on all skin types including sensitive. Acne This is one of the most common of the known skin diseases, caused by clogged pores, oily skin and excessive sebum production. Pores. Salicylic acid is derived from willow bark and is known as an acne fighting ingredient and antibacterial. The benefits include unclogging pores, clear up break outs, fights against hyperpigmentation.

TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR CHILD'S VISION HEALTH

Contributed by Family Features

Although many children receive a vision screening at school or by their pediatricians, those evaluations aren't enough to identify vision issues and manage overall vision health. Parents who take a proactive role in their child's vision health can help identify and correct problems before they impact everyday life. One common issue affecting children is myopia. Better known as nearsightedness, myopia is a condition in which close-up objects appear clear but, at a distance, everything becomes blurry and out of focus. If untreated, over time it can put the eyes at risk for serious vision-threatening conditions including retinal detachment, early cataract development, macular degeneration and glaucoma. There can be significant short-term impacts, too. Nearly 50 percent of children with myopia experience difficulty in the classroom, and 41 percent of parents with myopic children claim their children struggle with everyday activities, according to a study conducted by MetrixLab on behalf of Essilor of America. However, recognizing those struggles as myopia isn't always easy. Only 41 percent of parents in the study recognized their children were suffering from myopia.

.f your child is suffering from myopia, look for symptoms such as squinting to see distant objects, like the board in the classroom; sitting too close to the TV or holding books and tablets close when reading; and experiencing eyestrain or headaches.

In addition to monitoring symptoms, you can also take proactive steps to protect your child's vision health with these tips from Dr. Millicent Knight, a mother, optometrist and senior vice president of customer development for Essilor of America.

Schedule a comprehensive eye exam: Regular comprehensive eye exams are particularly important during childhood when eyes are developing rapidly. The American Optometric Association recommends a first eye examination at 6-12 months of age, at least once between ages 3-5 then at least annually between ages 6-18.

Monitor screen time: While technology can be a great tool for learning, all that screen time can lead to digital eyestrain, resulting in tired eyes, headaches, itchy eyes, blurred vision and increased sensitivity to light. To help reduce eyestrain, have children take periodic breaks while using devices and remember to strike a balance between screen time and outdoor time, as studies have shown that kids who play outside may be at a reduced risk of developing vision issues.

Protect eyes from the sun: Parents tend to remember sunscreen when children are outdoors, but they sometimes forget eyes are just as important. Children are at heightened risk for retinal damage when outdoors because their pupils, compared to adults, are larger outdoors and the lens inside the eye is clearer, which enables more harmful blue light from the sun to enter into the eye. Encourage kids to stay inside during the sun's peak hours, and when they do go outside, have them wear sunglasses with both blue light protection and UV protection that blocks UVA and UVB rays.

SPOONFUL | ISSUE 08

At age 20, Tommy Shafer's kidneys failed, and he was diagnosed with end stage renal disease (ESRD). He needed dialysis immediately to sustain life. The news shook him to his core. His thoughts immediately traveled back in time to the moment when he first learned kidney disease might change his life forever. At 14, Shafer was active and healthy, spending his time at cross country practice and at school. It was a mild afternoon in Kentucky, and Shafer was swimming in the Ohio River with friends. He had a small cut on his foot from new running shoes, which didn't mean much to him at the time. But the open wound mixed with the river water caused a bacterial infection. The infection landed Shafer in the hospital and caused him to develop IgA nephropathy. "IgA is a type of antibody that helps fight infections," said Adam Weinstein, M.D., vice president of medical affairs for DaVita Kidney Care. "When some types of antibodies are made in inappropriately high levels, they can damage the small blood vessels in the kidneys. The damage over time led to Tommy's diagnosis of kidney failure." Shafer knew there was a chance he may experience kidney failure at some point in his life due to the damage his kidneys sustained. But Tommy tried to put that out of his mind at the time. Six years later, as he was taking in his ESRD diagnosis, it was a realization he couldn't help but face. Dialysis replaces kidney function by filtering toxins from the blood. According to the latest U.S. Renal Data System Annual Data Report, more than 660,000 Americans are being treated for ESRD. Of these, 468,000 are dialysis patients. The lifestyle changes for dialysis patients can be significant.

"I wanted to feel in control of my health after experiencing such an abrupt change," Shafer shared. "Ultimately, PD allowed me more flexibility." Shafer was simultaneously pursuing a kidney transplant. In 2015 at age 21, he found a living donor and received a transplant. "I was hopeful it would allow me to close a big chapter of my life and move forward," Shafer explained. "But this step wasn't what I thought it would be."

"Patients must closely manage their diet, fluid intake and medications," said Dr. Weinstein. "Dialysis can have a big impact on the patient's daily schedule, especially for the patients we see in-center for hemodialysis." There are several dialysis treatment options available to patients. In-center hemodialysis (ICHD) is the option Shafer initially chose. Most patients on ICHD visit a dialysis center three days a week for up to four hours each time. While on ICHD Shafer found it difficult to maintain his independence and active lifestyle. After consulting with his care team, he decided to switch to a different dialysis treatment option - peritoneal dialysis (PD) that could be administered at home. PD is a form of dialysis that uses the lining of the abdomen to filter waste from the blood. Home dialysis treatments, such as PD or home hemodialysis (HHD), may allow patients more flexibility with their schedules. Patients dialyzing at home may experience shorter recovery times after treatments, better transplant outcomes, better blood pressure control and improved sleep. CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

Due to complications with the transplant, Shafer was frequently hospitalized. Rather than feeling defeated during this trying time, his focus was drawn to Paige, a close friend who eventually became his wife. "Paige spent every night by my side while I was in and out of the hospital," Shafer said. "Though we'd just started dating, I knew she cared for me and it helped me get through." Shafer's transplant ended up failing. He had to go back on dialysis. He and Paige were now engaged, so choosing the right care team and treatment option would impact them both. They decided to treat with DaVita Kidney Care, and together with Shafer's care team, the couple chose home hemodialysis (HHD). HHD is the same dialysis therapy as ICHD, but HHD is administered at home and with different timing increments. 2018 was a big year for the couple. They got married. They traveled to Hawaii for their honeymoon. And they both decided to start new careers as patient care technicians (PCTs) with DaVita. The Shafers were inspired by their experience with their DaVita care team and believed delivering care to dialysis patients would bring them purpose and fulfillment. They wanted to give back to fellow patients because they could truly empathize and understand the kidney disease journey. The couple is now helping give life with DaVita while Shafer is pursuing a second kidney transplant. "I know a transplant is my next step," he shared. "I still want to close this chapter and move forward, always trying to be a better version of me." You're not alone: How to recognize and support kids with anxiety and ADHD BPT

Does your child seem anxious about school? Is it something beyond typical stress? A big challenge for parents is figuring out where to turn for support and information when their kids are struggling. Parents often wonder whether it's anxiety or some other issue making school difficult. For instance, some symptoms of ADHD can look like anxiety. According to the CDC, it's not unusual for a child to have both: 1 in 3 kids who have ADHD also have anxiety.

Find support It's easy to feel alone when your child has anxiety or ADHD - or when you're starting to suspect that your child is struggling with something like this. Many parents crave connection with others who understand what they're going through. Today, families can find community through resources like Understood's new podcast, "In It." In each episode, families and experts provide insights about the joys and challenges of raising the 1 in 5 kids in the U.S. with learning and attention issues, anxiety and related concerns. "We want families and educators to feel like they're not alone," says Amanda Morin, co-host of the podcast. "This journey has enough challenges as it is, so we wanted to create a space for further support and understanding." Know the signs of anxiety If you're worried your child may have anxiety, it's important to be familiar with signs of anxiety in kids. This includes behaviors like: * Saying "what if" a lot and worrying about the future * Being unable to relax or concentrate * Getting angry without any clear reason * Frequently complaining of headaches and stomachaches Keep an eye on when and why your child gets anxious and look for patterns. What was happening right before your child got anxious? Was he trying to organize his backpack? Was she nervous about starting an assignment and saying things like, "What if I pick the wrong topic?" While everyone experiences anxiety sometimes, excessive worry that is difficult to control may rise to the level of an anxiety disorder. Keeping track of what you're seeing will help you understand your child's struggles. It can also help you frame your concerns for your child's doctor or mental health specialist.

Is anxiety a sign of something else? Without a formal evaluation, it can be hard to tell if anxiety is the root of your child's struggles, or if the anxiety points to something else - like a learning or attention issue. If anxiety is the root of your child's struggles, knowing this can help you understand other ways your child may be struggling. That's what happened for comedian Dena Blizzard. On a recent episode, Blizzard shared how she realized her daughter's anxiety might be an indicator of other issues. "We had finally gotten her anxiety under control, but I started to notice her difficulty with comprehension. Even though no one agreed with me, I trusted my instinct and had her evaluated for learning disabilities." Her daughter was found to have auditory processing issues, a learning disability, specifically with problems with comprehension and working memory, and ADHD. Not all kids with anxiety have learning and attention issues like ADHD. These are different conditions and they're addressed in different ways - even if they exist together. Parents can look for patterns and consult with teachers, doctors and mental health professionals to determine whether their child has a learning and attention issue, anxiety or both. Look Good, Feel Better! Positive self image.

There are many opinions regarding how to improve self image but ultimately confidence is the key to a positive self image. We must discover our worth and it is our individual responsibility as part of the human community to build, encourage, and uplift one another. I have found through my years of experience in the beauty industry, we do not truly transform people externally without impacting them internally.

www.bayacorp.org B.A.Y.A Corporation was founded by Tanisha (Tish) Frederick in May of 2014 and was established as a 501c3 Non-Profit organization in September of 2016. The B.A.Y.A "Beautiful as You Are" name was birthed out of a very low time in the Frederick family household. The family relocated in 2011 and their children had to change schools in the middle of the school year. Their daughter had a very hard time adjusting to the move and began getting bullied in her 7th grade year of middle school. This led to very destructive behavior which caused her to have to be hospitalized. As a mother, Tish could not understand how such a beautiful, talented, and intelligent young lady could suffer from such low self-esteem. One day while Tish was at work, the phrase "Beautiful as You Are" dropped into her spirit and the concept for B.A.Y.A was birthed. The goal of this group is to teach girls that they are so much more than their reflection in the mirror by constantly reinforcing there is much more to life than what you look like or what your peers think of you. Since 2014 B.A.Y.A has grown from 7 girls to over 100 in the Louisville, Kentucky area.

3 WAYS TO EMPOWER WOMEN IN YOUR COMMUNITY AND WORLDWIDE

CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

cheakwoolfolk.com

Female entrepreneurs make up approximately 1/3 of all entrepreneurs worldwide, and it's always a great time to highlight, support and applaud women in business, in your community and across the globe. Here are a few easy ways you can celebrate and support businesswomen and female entrepreneurs. Shop women-owned businesses. Know about a restaurant, shop or service-oriented business in your area that's owned and operated by women entrepreneurs? (If you don't, do a little online research to find some.) Go out of your way to shop at their location, refer friends and family members to their businesses and be sure to let them know that you support their efforts in your community. Give them a boost by posting a positive review of their business on social media. Helping female-owned businesses thrive is a great way to empower women in your own backyard. Mentor women and girls in your industry. Find ways to offer female students and younger employees a chance to learn more about educational and employment opportunities in your own field. Contact career counselors at high schools or local colleges and offer to let students shadow you at work, or give them a chance to do an informational interview with you to learn more about your business. Help them get connected within your business network and share your experiences. If your employer is willing, develop an internship or on-the-job training program to encourage and empower up-and-coming women in your industry. Support companies actively involved in projects that empower women. Mars Wrigley Confectionery U.S. and Dove Chocolate have pledged $1 million to CARE, a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty, specifically to empower women in West Africa. Dove Chocolate and CARE partnered to empower women in the cocoa growing communities of Cote d'Ivoire after an assessment of women's involvement in West African cocoa farms found that women were not benefiting from cocoa production, even though they participate in more than half of cocoa-farming activities. The first stone was recently laid on a new marketplace for women-led businesses in the village of Gueyo, a centrally located commerce area nestled among the cocoa fields of Cote d'Ivoire. Consumers can help support these efforts, as $5 will be donated to CARE with every online purchase of qualifying Dove Chocolate Promises. This year, find special ways to celebrate and support the women in your neighborhood and around the world who are working hard to create better lives for themselves, their families and their communities.

I have listed 8 magical things that I use to help make my dream(s) come true or become a reality. There are many other things that can be added to this list but start with these and become well on your way to unleashing your magic and discovering powers that you never knew you had.

1. YOU MUST SET GOALS - a dream is just a dream without goals. It’s not only about setting a goal, but it’s also about working towards the goal. It isn’t enough to dream of being a restaurant owner. Until it is time for you to open your restaurant, set goals that will help you achieve toward the directed efforts. It may be that you need to take some cooking or business classes at your local college or community sponsored programs. Where will your restaurant be and what type of food will you serve? You may want to consult a local chef concerning customer service or the running of day to day business. You may also want to volunteer at a food kitchen or food pantry. Decide if you are going to work in the restaurant or simply own it to which you will delegate responsibilities to a team. Know what you want and what you will need to do. DON’T PROCRASTINATE…get started now because tomorrow is not a guarantee that you will begin! 2. YOU MUST ASK FOR HELP - one of the hardest things to do sometimes is ask for help from others. It isn’t enough to ask for help but you must also accept the help that is offered. A lot of times help may not always be what you think it should be so you may turn down a blessing because you felt it didn’t line up with your ideas or values. Help comes in many forms, shapes, colors, affirmations, premonitions, and revelations. If someone offers you help then take it even if it doesn’t make sense in that moment. You may never know how that favor can be returned one day. DON’T BE TOO STUBBORN…everyone needs help with something at some point in their life. 3. YOU MUST BE PATIENT - this is not an easy task by any means. Patience will test every fiber of your being. One thing I have learned about patience is that it also comes with wisdom and knowledge. It isn’t enough to just be patient because in that patience you have to continue to work towards your dream. You don’t just stop or give up because a door closed but the more you practice patience the more insight you will develop for your next move. Something better awaits those that are patient. DON’T GIVE UP…hang in there your time will come!

CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

cheakwoolfolk.com

4. YOU MUST BE CONSISTENT - this is easier said than done. A lot of times we may fall off from pursing our dreams because we loose patience, strength, and effort. It isn’t enough to say that you are a cook. If your dream is to become a chef, then you should be cooking something every day. Either you will be good at it or you will be good at being bad but either way, you have to be consistent. Consistency breeds continuity which gives birth to a better and more confident version of yourself. DON’T WAIST TIME…once it’s gone you will never be able to get it back! 5. YOU MUST HONE YOUR CRAFT - how can anyone take you seriously if you don’t understand what you are doing? You must become an expert at what you do. It isn’t enough to say that you are a musician if you are not familiar with different genres of music, tone, or harmony. Study, research, and ask questions. Go to your local library and ask a librarian for help. You should also be teachable and forever learning. All these things are great but when you can teach your craft to someone else that is what makes your expertise invaluable. DON’T FOLLOW BLINDLY…you can’t see where you are going if you don’t know where you came from! 6. YOU MUST HELP OTHERS- the greatest reward in life is having an impact in someone else’s life. A lot of people believe that they don’t have what it takes or have the resources to help someone else, but the opposite is true. You have exactly what it takes to help someone else and as you pursue your dream(s), there is someone else that will pursue their dream because of you. It isn’t enough to give someone money. Giving someone your time, energy, a smile, a hug, or even sending a text message or email can go further than you think. Compassion and kindness doesn’t cost anything. It takes hope and courage to pursue your dream, that in and of itself can help someone more than you will ever know. People don’t care how much you know but they do want to know that you care. DON’T BURN BRIDGES…once they are enflamed, good luck with putting out the fires and rebuilding!

7. YOU MAY LOSE OR FAIL - be willing to lose in order to gain and falling isn’t failure unless you stay down. When pursuing your dream(s), there may be things that you will lose right away or over time. This loss may include but is not limited to friends avoiding you, family ignoring you, running out of money, or loosing countess hours of sleep. This may also mean that what you thought would work didn’t. That is okay. Take that time to regroup, refocus, and regain. Each loss or failure can be used as an opportunity for something greater. DON’T BE AFRAID…failure can become a stepping stone or a stepping block.

8. YOU MUST BELIEVE - your season is now, and positivity can move mountains. A lot of people think that something miraculous must occur before they believe that they have found success. Every time that you set goals and work towards them, that is a success. When you ask for help and accept it, that is success. When you stay consistent and hone your craft go ahead and check the success box. When you help others or suffer a loss, once again success. If you can believe it then you can achieve it. Stay positive and continue to work towards your dream(s) and know that every day is success. DON’T LOOSE HOPE… without hope the world would be a dull place because everyone needs something to believe in.

The magic happens with you and the magic happens with consistent efforts. In reality, we do not have fairy godmothers to rescue us or magic genies ready to grant our wishes. Instead, we have our hearts, our dreams, our wisdoms, our hopes, and our ambitions. Remember that you are the only person who can define your success and you are responsible for it. Find that inner magic wand and wave it in the atmosphere. You got this and you can do it. Be of good hope and always have courage...Bibbidi - Bobiddi - Boo!

4 simple tips to satisfy your comfort food cravings

BPT

118

After a long day, digging into a hearty pasta dish or a piping hot bowl of soup can fill you with warmth and coziness - especially on those chilly days. The good news is that comfort foods don't have to be unhealthy or take a lot of time to make. We can still enjoy the rich, flavorful options that feed your cravings with easy-tomake dishes that incorporate wholesome, nutritious ingredients (some taken directly from your grocery store's chilled foods section). Here are some helpful tips to enjoy comforting meals without the guilt: * Combine frozen and prepared foods with fresh produce. Frozen meals and pizzas, as well as chilled pasta, are the perfect bases for balanced meals and come in many varieties. Shop the refrigerator and freezer sections for your favorite dishes that you can simply pair with fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lowfat dairy to create a balanced plate. It can be much easier and less time-consuming than cooking a full meal from scratch, and leave you more time to do other activities beyond cooking.

* Try recipes featuring a balance of protein, dairy and vegetables. Cozy up on the couch with a rich and tasty mug of minestrone soup loaded with seasonal vegetables. Adding refrigerated pasta like Buitoni Three Cheese Tortellini helps make it a complete meal, cutting time spent on preparation, but not on taste. The blend of ricotta, Parmesan and romano cheeses in the tortellini perfectly complements veggies like sweet potatoes, kale and carrots in a steaming, herby broth. Try the sample recipe below! * Strategically mix in vegetables. There are several ways to sneak veggies into your favorite comfort foods. Sprinkle greens into scrambled eggs and quiches, incorporate shredded zucchini and carrots into baked goods, add spinach or broccoli to spaghetti sauce, or make pumpkin waffles. The possibilities are endless. CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

cheakwoolfolk.com

* Use fruit to indulge your sweet tooth. For many people, comfort foods are all about desserts. Those striving to eat healthier can still enjoy their sweets in moderation, but may wish to incorporate ingredients like fresh fruits so they also offer greater nutritional value. Consider warm berry cobblers, baked apples, carrot cake and/or smoothies that make use of fruits and even veggies.

For the crostini: 1/4 cup Buitoni Pesto with Basil 1 small baguette 1/2 cup ricotta cheese 1 cup cherry tomatoes Olive oil 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt Fresh pepper Instructions: Pre-heat instant pot to the sautĂŠ "normal" setting along with 1 teaspoon of oil. Add the bacon and cook for 5 minutes, then add the rosemary, thyme and sage. Cook for 3 more minutes or until the bacon is golden in color, then add the onions, carrots, bell peppers, red pepper flakes, 1/2 teaspoon of salt and a few cracks of pepper. Mix well and turn the sautĂŠ setting to "more" on the instant pot and cook for 8 minutes. Add the garlic and cook another 6 minutes, or until the veggies are soft and have wilted down by a good amount. Add the tomato paste and cook for 1 minute, then add the kale, crushed tomatoes, beef stock, dried beans, Parmesan rind, bay leaf, 1/2 teaspoon salt and a few cracks of pepper. Make sure you don't add liquid past the max line on the instant pot. Mix well and check for seasoning; you will likely need a bit more salt. Press cancel on the instant pot, put the lid on, and set to pressure cook on high for 40 minutes. Once the cook time is done, let the instant pot sit for 10 minutes, then carefully release the pressure manually. Make sure to remove the bay leaf and Parmesan rind.

6 FUN FACTS ABOUT BANANAS THAT WILL INSPIRE YOU TO EAT MORE BPT

Bananas are a tasty snack that many people eat regularly without much thought, but there's more to the iconic yellow fruit than just its convenience and color. Bananas are a superfood loaded with nutrients and have been enjoyed worldwide for hundreds of years. In fact, there are many reasons to consider eating more bananas. Versatility: Bananas are one of the most versatile foods available. They come in their own container and you can eat them right out of the peel. You can slice up fresh bananas to enhance favorite snack foods, like cereal, yogurt or smoothies. They are a natural alternative to sugar to sweeten desserts and can be used in a variety of recipes, including savory ones. They are even tasty dried and eaten as banana chips. Nutrient powerhouse: Bananas are not only a powerhouse for potassium with nearly 10 percent of the recommended daily value, but also boast many other nutritional benefits. Just one banana has 35 percent of the daily recommended B-6, which helps with cell growth. In addition, you'll be giving your body important vitamins and minerals like magnesium, manganese, vitamin C and copper. Bananas are also a good source of antioxidants to support a healthy immune system.

Don't believe the sugar rumors: Bananas are actually a wonderful source of natural sugars (the good kind) and carbohydrates, which help provide sustained energy. It's a common misconception that bananas aren't as healthy due to the higher sugar content, however, the natural sugars in bananas come with fiber, which slows digestion and gives the body time to use it as fuel instead of storing it as fat. Low-fat, low-cal: Bananas have no fat, cholesterol or sodium, making them ideal for nutritious eating as well as a good option if you're on many specialty diets. Plus, they're just 100 calories per banana, providing you all-natural, long-lasting energy. Whether it's a snack or addition to a recipe, you can feel good about eating bananas. Digestive health: Bananas are often one of baby's first foods. They are also one of the first things we eat when we are sick. Why? Because they are soft to chew and easy to digest. In fact, bananas can support digestive health thanks to their pectin level that acts as a fiber. If you prefer your bananas a bit on the unripe side, you're also in luck because unripe bananas contain higher levels of resistant starches, which are a soluble fiber. Banana bread: One of the most popular ways to bake with bananas is banana bread. What many people might not know is the history of the moist, sweet loaf featuring the classic yellow fruit. Banana bread is the creation of thrifty housewives during the Great Depression who had to stretch their family's food supplies, including utilizing overly-ripe bananas. Recipes have evolved over the years to include different ingredients and fun variations, such as adding in nuts, chocolate chips and flavoring like almond and vanilla. In fact, banana bread is so popular, it has its own day: Feb. 23 is National Banana Bread Day. What better reason to bake this classic recipe for your friends and family? CKW-THE CHEA K. Entertain in Style Family Features It's never too early to plan ahead, especially when you are expecting guests in your home. Your family and friends know and might love your style, but it can be important to spice things up now and again to impress your visitors. Factors such as lights, music and food can affect your guests experience in your home. To remain stylish and keep your party going, consider these tips for fun and festive home entertaining. Back to Basics. Staying organized is key while entertaining guests in your home. Try to plan out every detail before the big event, which can allow things to go more smoothly on the big day. As you think out your plan ahead of time, making lists can be a helpful way to stay organized and ensure you get everything done. List out your guests, what needs to be picked up from the store and possible decorations you might need to buy or craft yourself. The possibilities can seem endless, but it's important to have a plan in place before you start putting things together.

Think about Theme. There are numerous ways your style can be shown while entertaining. One way is to pick a theme or theme-related food dishes. One way to show your theme is through decorations. Placing them throughout your home can give the party some life and help guests get into the overall theme of the party. Light up the Party. Transforming your home can be made simpler by changing the lighting. It's typical for lights to be dimmed for parties to set a more relaxed mood. Other ideas include using candles, lamps or even hanging lanterns if you are entertaining outside. Make sure it's bright enough so everyone can see, but dimmed enough to set the mood for the evening's events. Set the Mood with Music. Pick music that matches your theme and inspires that same feel throughout the house. If you're going for a fun, energetic atmosphere, try something with a quick tempo, such as pop. If you're wanting to relax, go for subtler, soothing tones. Try making your playlist before you entertain and listen to it a few times through, that way you can know what to expect and how guests will react to your music selections. Enjoy it. Through all the anxiety and stress of entertainment planning, make sure you take time to enjoy yourself during the time guests are in your home. Some guests will notice if you're not having a good time. Smile and remember to be present in the moment. Find more entertainment tips at eLivingToday.com.

BPT Every parent knows it can be a challenge to get kids

Sneaky ways to get your kids eating healthier

to eat healthy foods. Serving piles of vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins might be our goal, but it might not guarantee that children will actually eat them. Registered dietitian Dawn Jackson Blatner offers tips for upping the nutrients in family meals without your kids suspecting a thing. Pack the meatloaf with vegetables. If meatloaf is a family favorite, you're in luck. It's easy to add finely grated vegetables like carrots into your meatloaf mix without anyone being the wiser. Carrots are loaded with nutrients such as fiber, potassium and betacarotene. Or try adding minced celery, green peppers or spinach to meatloaf (or meatballs!) for a nutrition boost. You can also combine cooked lentils with your ground beef for a leaner meatloaf without sacrificing flavor.

Italian favorites with added veggies. When cooking Italian dishes like lasagna, adding chopped broccoli or spinach to one of your layers is an easy way to increase its nutritional value. Boost nutrition of jarred pasta sauce for any Italian dish by pureeing in your favorite cooked veggies like broccoli, carrots, squash or peppers without anyone noticing. This powered-up sauce is great for making homemade superfood pizza, too. Asian stir fry at home. Instead of relying on Asian takeout meals, make stir fry at home. It's quick and easy, and you can buy pre-cut chicken or beef to speed up your prep time. Get fresh or frozen veggies like sugar snap peas, grated carrots, broccoli florets and peppers and stir fry with soy sauce and a bit of ginger and garlic powder. It's a high-veggie, craveable meal loaded with vitamins and fiber. Serve with brown rice instead of white for even more nutrition. Use the best ingredients. Choosing your ingredients with care makes a huge difference in nutritional value. Blatner says that using Eggland's Best eggs makes any recipe more nutritious, as they contain more than double the vitamin B12 when compared with ordinary eggs. "Vitamin B12 transforms food to energy that kids need to play and grow," says Blatner. They also contain more vitamin D, which helps a child's body absorb calcium, a mineral that bones need to stay strong and grow properly, according to the National Institutes of Health. Compared to ordinary eggs, they have 25 percent less saturated fat, plus contain more than double the omega-3s and 10 times more vitamin E. To celebrate National Nutrition Month this March, Eggland's Best and Life Time 60day are challenging families across America to Plus It Up when it comes to their overall nutrition and wellness routine. 3 key questions adult learners should ask before returning to school BPT

The decision to return to school is not made lightly. While earning a degree can be highly rewarding in the form of better career opportunities and higher pay, the path to get there can be filled with challenges, especially if you're trying to fit school and studies in with your work and family responsibilities. An education unlocks so many doors. It's worth taking the time to make sure you're opening the door that's right for you. Before you register for that first class, it's important to consider and plan for how you're going to get it all done, from working out an arrangement with your workplace to accommodating your school schedule and enlisting help from family members to get chores done. Here are top questions every potential student should ask themselves before they begin the journey. What are my career goals? When you're looking at a specific college program, it's good to take a step back and examine your goals and motivations and how going back to school fits in. If you're hoping the degree or certification will lead to a promotion or pay increase so you can better support your family, it's important to know how that will happen. To get a gauge on the local market, search for job openings in your chosen field. If you have time, sit down for informational interviews with people in the field to give you a clearer picture of how a degree or certification can help you. Finally, some institutions provide support and information to prospective students. Make an appointment with the career center so you can better understand how a certain degree will advance your career or help you meet your goals.

CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

How will I manage the costs of education? High tuition costs and student loans can be a source of worry for many students. Before you commit to a school, be sure to take some time to uncover resources that will make your education more affordable. Start by talking to the financial aid office. Some institutions offer scholarships and financing options, as well as programs that incentivize students to do well. For instance, Strayer University automatically enrolls bachelor's students in its Graduation Fund, which allows students to earn one nocost course for every three classes successfully completed. These classes can be redeemed in the student's final year of their bachelor's degree program. As long as students stay continuously enrolled, these credits have the potential to reduce the cost of a bachelor's degree by up to 25 percent. Other cost-reducing avenues at other schools include research scholarships and grants, which may be available to people in certain fields. Also, don't forget to talk to your employer. Many workplaces offer tuition assistance programs to their employees. Does the program offer flexibility for my busy schedule? Earning a degree or certification is a major commitment. For some students, work and family responsibilities can elbow their way into a busy school schedule. "It helps to know the availability and quality of flexible options offered by your school. These offerings can help make your educational experience more manageable and enjoyable," said Brian Jones, president of Strayer University. There are programs structured so students can learn at their own pace. FlexPath - available at Capella University - gives students the flexibility to complete coursework at a speed that is comfortable for them. Students are evaluated by how well they demonstrate competency in a course, so whether it takes two weeks or 12, they're free to move on to their next course at their own pace. Once you flesh out the answers to these key questions, you can start taking classes with the confidence that your chosen program is right for you and your career.

3 Tips for a Successful 2019 and Beyond (Family Features) The demands of today’s always-connected culture can make finding balance in life nearly impossible. Between work, school and extracurricular activities, schedules can be crazy, and setting aside time to exercise is often difficult. For Performance Enhancement Specialist Emily Hutchins, balance is key to seeing hard work turn into lifelong, healthy habits. “Whether my clients are striving to lose those last couple pounds or completing their 100th marathon, the most important thing to me is that they're on track to a long life of great health,” Hutchins said. To help build easy, long-term fitness habits and set yourself up for a successful year of healthy living, Hutchins recommends these tips. Get Real Whether trying a new workout class, joining a local gym or training for your first marathon, set an attainable fitness goal you have confidence in. Finding a workout plan you enjoy or a friend to hold you accountable can help establish a routine. While falling into old habits can happen as the year goes on, setting realistic intentions can help you stay on track and avoid excuses. Recover Smarter Your journey to better health doesn’t end at the finish line or when you get in your car after a fitness class. In fact, what you put into your body post-workout can be a critical piece of your fitness path and help prepare you for your next workout so you can keep working toward your goals throughout the year. Hutchins recommends low-fat chocolate milk after a tough workout to help repair, rebuild and refuel muscles. With natural, high-quality protein to build lean muscle, fluids and electrolytes to replace what you lose in sweat, calcium for strong bones and the right carb-to-protein ratio to refuel exhausted muscles, chocolate milk is the real deal for real recovery. Relax and Unwind Make sure to give yourself a break, relax and unwind, too. It is important to refuel both your body and mind for balance in the midst of a busy schedule. Reset with something you love to do like cooking or curling up with a good book. This can help you recharge to take on the next day and the next workout. It takes real work day-in and day-out to build healthy habits that can benefit you long-term. Setting goals, recovering properly and taking care of your mind and body can jumpstart a better and stronger you. For more information on the benefits of recovering with chocolate milk, visit builtwithchocolatemilk.com.

5 Ways to Avoid an Energy Crash (Family Features) If you start each day motivated but find your energy tends to fade throughout the day, a few simple and easyto-implement changes to your routine could make all the difference. Minor adjustments to your eating habits, exercise routine and mental attitude can help boost energy levels so you can power through the day feeling fully charged. Tune in. Take the silence out of a dull morning with some of your favorite music to help ensure you’re starting the day on a positive note. Turn on the radio while you’re showering, plug in headphones while preparing breakfast or set a “wake up and get ready” playlist on shuffle during your commute. Start with breakfast. It’s fairly common to skip breakfast if you’re in a rush to get out the door, but those few minutes you save in the morning can end up costing you as the day wears on. That’s because breakfast quite literally breaks your overnight fast and sends signals to your body that it’s time to kick back into gear for the day. With a convenient option like the Nescafé Coffee Protein Smoothie, you can hack your morning routine so that you can get more out of your day. Made with real 100 percent Colombian Arabica coffee, oats and almond butter, this ready-todrink smoothie contains 15 grams of plant-based protein and as much caffeine as one cup of coffee to help you prepare for the day ahead. Get creative. If you typically spend your mornings focused on routine tasks, give your brain some creative freedom. Carving out time during the day for an activity you enjoy, such as sketching or coloring, watching inspirational videos, meditating or even brainstorming outsidethe-box ideas for a fictional client, can help increase productivity when you turn your focus back to the task at hand. Shake up your afternoon pick-me-up. Mornings can go by in the blink of an eye, but afternoons sometimes seem to drag. A little boost may be all you need to keep going. Reward your hard work with an option like a Nescafé Cold Whipped Latte and enjoy a perfectly indulgent afternoon treat. Give it a quick shake and the chilled blend of coffee, creamy milk and coffee or French vanilla flavors create layers of barista-inspired froth and foam to deliver a coffee-shop experience right at your desk. Prep for the next day. If you’re apt to take your work home with you, consider jotting down any end-of-day work thoughts and tasks for the following day before you leave for the night. Keeping a physical to-do list or journal can provide a starting point for the next morning. This can help prevent forgetfulness, reduce stress and potentially aid in getting a better night’s sleep because your brain isn’t buzzing from trying to keep a mental checklist. Find more inspiration to energize your morning and shake up the afternoon at Nescafe.com/us.

When reading a book or watching a show featuring characters in STEM careers, such as doctors, mechanics or computer engineers, talk with your child about the characteristics those characters have in common, like a sense of curiosity or a willingness to try an idea that may or may not work. Taking time to point out any family members or friends with similar jobs or hobbies can help your child picture himself or herself in STEM-related roles. 2. Identify outside-the-box places STEM lives. Technology, for example, can be used to conduct research, draw or create music – things that don’t always occur in laboratories, research centers or tech companies. Using technology to pursue other interests can open new possibilities for children to channel their interests into STEM careers. To build on any specific interests, such as robotics, the ocean or the universe, find activities in your area you can do with your child. For example, encourage your child to ask the zookeepers about certain animals he or she is interested in or research the lifecycle of a tree before taking a family camping trip. 3. Focus on the process to instill confidence. Kids should understand failure is OK, so they’re more open to try something new and step outside their comfort zones. Encourage your child to explore his or her passions and interests more in-depth. Try to compliment desired behaviors, such as hard work, perseverance, grit and learning from mistakes, to teach your child success doesn’t come from always being right. 4. Emphasize STEM-related skills. Curiosity, observation, problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication are crucial in nearly all STEM-focused careers. By asking questions like “why?,” “how?” and “what if?,” and giving children the opportunity to explain the world around them instead of simply providing the answers, you can help spark curiosity and set the foundation for the development of more advanced skills. 5. Don’t limit your child to gender stereotypes. Ensure your children know they have the ability to do and try things that capture their attention and align with their passions. Try to refrain from identifying certain toys or games as things that are just for boys or girls. All children should be allowed to play with and explore trucks, dolls, dinosaurs, kitchen sets and tool boxes. Try to avoid setting boundaries that could unintentionally channel a child in a

6 WAYS TO MAKE YOUR OUTSIDE WEDDING MORE COMFORTABLE While it's been popular in the past to bring the outdoors inside using trees and floral arrangements, a recent trend for many wedding venues is to create a homey space outdoors. Guests don't need to rough it just because you've chosen to host your ceremony or reception outside. Your outdoor venue can become more comfortable, as well as more stylish, with just a little help from Rental HQ. 1. Cover your chairs. Seating can be made more comfortable and look much more elegant than you might expect, whether your venue is a park, a beach or a backyard. All it takes is stylish chair covers, which can be easily rented to accommodate any size wedding. 2. Dress up your tables. Rented linens provide an essential touch of class to any outdoor venue, setting the right stage for your tableware and special centerpieces. Choose colors to complement your reception's theme and floral arrangements or any other decor.

3. Protect against the elements. Plan for the time of year in your area and you can weather almost any circumstances. Even if the forecast is warm and sunny, you'll still want a tent and/or table umbrellas, if not to safeguard against a possible shower, to tame the sunshine. You can even rent misting fans to help your guests stay cool. The outdoor wedding section of Rental HQ is a great place to get ideas and research your options. 4. Provide a foundation. A variety of flooring will ensure the safety of the bride's train and sure footing, even for those sporting heels. Rentable floor mats and decking can help guests navigate the terrain from the parking lot to the venue. Multiple choices include tiles, carpet, turf or even a portable dance floor that can turn your backyard into a nightclub. 5. Light up the night. For an evening outdoor event, stringing lights or lanterns is often insufficient. You'll want your guests to be able to see - and photograph - your special day. Renting adequate uplighting for your nighttime reception is a must-do. Focus on important areas such as the dance floor, the table where the cake will be presented, buffet tables or special floral arrangements. Choose LED lighting specially made for outdoor events, which is waterproof and will not create too much heat. You can choose different colors to create magical effects. 6. Homey furniture. Consider renting a few couches or comfy chairs to create a seating area where older family members can gather and greet guests, or your tired bride or groom can put up their feet for a few minutes while they chat with family and friends. Stage the area with a coffee table set up with the guest book so guests can sit comfortably while they jot their well wishes to the married couple. Any outdoor wedding can be made special, no matter what the decor. To find a rental store near you or to research furnishings, lighting or other equipment you might need, visit the wedding section on RentalHQ.com. Planning for your special day is easier than you think with all of the right tools at your fingertips.

AN EXPERT NINJA EXPLAINS HOW TO TRAIN FOR AN OBSTACLE-STYLE EVENT BPT With popular obstacle- and ninja-style shows taking over TV, you might be curious what it takes to become a part of the competition. A desire is the first step, and one expert ninja says this can springboard you quickly to the next level. "'I want to try it.' This is the first thing I said before exploring training," says John Wilmas, best known as the stair ninja (@stair_ninja on Instagram). He participates in competitive stair climbing with a passion for charity climbs. He also has competed on American Ninja Warrior. "Most people enter this sport with a simple desire to give it a try and have fun," he says. "If that is you, I encourage you to give it a go. From there, you can take additional steps to develop your skills and hone your focus." Wilmas recommends five tips when beginning to train for any obstacle-style event: 1. Find a local training gym or park As the popularity of the shows has grown, so too has the desire for more obstacle-style training facilities. Research what is available in your area. Indoor gyms and outdoor obstacle parks featuring FitCore Extreme fitness equipment by Landscape Structures Inc. offers multiple fitness options available for children ages 5 to 12 and teens/adults ages 13 and over, so the whole family can participate. Learn more at www.playlsi.com. This equipment promotes whole-body fitness and agility with options for varied fitness and skill levels.

2. Use your body weight as a training tool If you can't find training opportunities within 30 minutes of your home, focus on body-weight training and calisthenics - the type of training gymnasts do - to build your skills. Keep in mind that even if you can bench a lot of weight, it's not the same as holding your own body weight. Train by using your own body weight as resistance because that is what will be tested on many of the obstacles. 3. Work on speed, balance and agility Being agile and having good balance can help you conquer some of the toughest obstacles. Competitors that only focus on upper body strength will slip up on seemingly easier parts of the course simply because they don't have good balance or speed. The faster you can go, the less energy you'll expend, which means you can go further without getting tired. Speed can also be an alternative to balance. If you can go through some obstacles quickly, you'll not have to rely on stellar balance skills. 4. Find friends and build camaraderie What makes obstacle- and ninja-style competitions unique is everyone supports each other. It's a competition, but competitors have strong bonds and encourage the success of each participant. When you start training and decide you enjoy the sport, try joining some local groups so you can build your own camaraderie. The support you'll feel is incredible. You can start by researching local meetups on the Facebook group American Ninja Warrior Comrades.

5. Explore mental training A big part of succeeding at this style sport is mental strength. Believe in yourself and envision yourself successfully completing a challenge. A mental block is always the hardest obstacle, so if you make a mistake, don't dwell on it. Repetition helps you gain confidence so your mind trusts your body. Then you can just go without overthinking it. The mind is your biggest asset if you use it to your advantage, but can also be your biggest crutch if you let worries overtake your abilities.

AUTO INSIGHT: SMART BPT GUIDELINES FOR BUYING A USED CAR 10 smart guidelines for buying a used car

Buying a used car can be a great decision. Oftentimes, that's where you'll find a deal. On the other hand, you've got to make sure there won't be any surprises. Before you hit the car lot, take some time to prepare for the purchase. These guidelines will help you make a wise decision on a used vehicle that works for you. Set a budget - and stick to it! Think about what you're willing to pay for a car. Have a budget and stick to it. If you plan to finance it through your bank or credit union, figure out what you would be comfortable paying every month. "When it comes to the cost of owning a vehicle, in addition to the car payment, think about other related monthly expenses, such as gas, maintenance and insurance," says Joe Pendergast, vice president of consumer lending at Navy Federal Credit Union. Get pre-approved for a loan. By getting pre-approved for a loan, you can be confident in your budget and set your financing limits from the start. "Getting pre-approved may even increase your purchasing power. Oftentimes, the dealer may be more willing to bargain on the car price if the amount you're willing to pay has already been set," says Pendergast. Financial institutions, such as Navy Federal for example, offer auto loans nationwide at low fixed rates, discounts on insurance and asset protection, as well as a calculator to help determine how much financing your car will cost.

Create a must-have list. It's important to separate the must-haves from the nice-to-haves when looking at vehicle features. If you have kids, a four-door vehicle might be essential, and you'll want to ensure there's enough seating for your entire family. You might want leather, but cloth seats will do. Know your needs versus your wants and make a list of non-negotiables. You probably also have a few types of vehicles in mind. Do some research and read reviews so you can narrow your focus when you're shopping. This helps save time when searching online or navigating the car lots. Understand the history. At least one person owned the vehicle before you, so it's important to know the car's history. When you get approved for a used car loan through Navy Federal, you get free access to a CARFAX(R) Vehicle History Report, which helps you identify cars with potential problems and purchase safe, reliable ones. Pay attention to mileage. For used cars, the lower the mileage, the better. Fewer miles often means there's less wear and tear - a higher value for you. A good average to target for cars is about 15,000 miles a year. Check the tires. One important thing to consider when buying a used car is the condition of the tires. If the tires don't have enough tread, you'll need to invest in new ones. Test drive. Never consider buying a vehicle before taking it for a test drive. By getting behind the wheel, you can ensure it feels good to you, find out if anything seems off, such as strange noises or smells, and see how it handles. "Don't rush the process. If you're not satisfied after a test drive, keep searching, there's plenty of inventory out there," says Pendergast. Get an inspection. It will cost you, but if you want peace of mind, consider investing in an inspection by a certified mechanic. You'll have to request borrowing the car for the inspection, which may not always be possible, but it's worth exploring if you're having second thoughts. Certifications. If you're shopping for a used car that is five years old or less, you may want to explore certified used vehicles. Some dealerships offer certifications for the used cars they are reselling under their brand. This could include valuable bonuses, such as vehicle inspections and warranties, not to mention peace of mind. CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

NANJING, CHINA: COME FOR THE HISTORY, STAY FOR THE FOOD BPT

Savvy travelers know Nanjing as a hidden treasure, offering an array of rich historical and cultural sites for visitors to explore. Located in Jiangsu Province just outside of Shanghai, this city of more than 8 million sits along the Yangtze River, with the majestic Purple Mountain rising in the east. When approaching the tomb, be sure to see the half-mile long Sacred Path, guarded by four pairs of stone warriors and 12 pairs of mythical creatures. Also constructed in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Nanjing's City Wall was once one of the longest city walls in the world. More than 15 miles of the wall are still intact, welcoming visitors from around the world. Old phone, new service? Upgrade your wireless with a SIM card swap

BPT Special Report

Americans are holding onto their smartphones for longer than ever. Pricier smartphones have led consumers to wait an average of nearly three years before upgrading their device. Fortunately, smartphones today are so good, and so powerful, that they simply don't need to be replaced nearly as often as in the past. But does holding onto your phone mean you also have to stick with your current wireless carrier? In many cases, the answer is no. Many smartphones connect to a carrier's network through a small chip inserted into the device called a SIM (for 'Subscriber Identity Module') card. The SIM card holds your identity, location, network data, security keys, contacts and saved text messages. Each carrier has a unique SIM card, so the process of activating your phone with a different carrier can be as simple as swapping to the new provider's SIM.

www.ckwmag.com

April/May 2019

168

Know your network There are some important nuances you'll need to be aware of before you can switch, though. The biggest is that different carriers use different types of network technology to convert incoming data into radio waves for making and receiving calls. Verizon, Sprint and U.S. Cellular networks connect using a CDMA (for Code Division Multiple Access) network. AT&T and T-Mobile use a different type, called GSM (Global System for Mobiles). What this means is that your smartphone will only work with a carrier that uses the same type of network that it is designed for. So if, for instance, you wanted to use your Verizon phone with AT&T service, it's simply not possible. The GSM network won't be able to connect to a phone designed for a CDMA network. Unlock your device The other key is that your phone must be "unlocked" from your current carrier before it can be activated with a new provider. The lock is a software code that's put on the phone by the manufacturer per the requirement of the carrier that sells the device. The lock is meant to ensure that the phone can't be used on any other operator's network until a different software code is entered to unlock the device. If you have a device that is locked, you can get it unlocked from your wireless carrier if you meet certain criteria, like paying the full price of your device or ending your contract and being in good standing with your current provider. If you meet these requirements, having your device unlocked can usually be done simply by making a call to your carrier's customer service department and requesting it. CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

cheakwoolfolk.com

Make the switch Once you've confirmed that your new provider's network is compatible with your phone, and that your phone is unlocked, switching is simple. You'll get a SIM card from your new carrier, and insert it into the proper slot on your device. The process will vary depending on the type of device you have. SIM cards come in three different sizes (nano, micro and standard) and the location of the SIM slot is not uniform, though most are located on the side of your phone. Carriers today make it easy to switch. Consumer Cellular, for instance, provides the SIM card and activation on their networks for free when you sign up using a compatible GSM phone. In addition, they offer no-contract monthly plans which include talk, text and data for as low as $20 a month. If you're using a cellphone that still works great for you, there's no reason to take on the expense of a new device. Instead, find a carrier that fits your tastes, needs and budget. If your phone is compatible with their networks, a new SIM card will deliver everything you need to keep your phone and improve your service.

Parenting advice for strong relationships and a healthy house

Managing work-life balance as a parent comes with challenges, and with busy schedules for both parents and children, disruptions at the last minute can really take a toll on a family's everyday routine. This is especially true when a child has to take a sick day from school due to illness during cold and flu season. It's important to know you're not alone, and with a little focus and positive reinforcement, you can help your kids be happy and healthy.

La La Anthony, producer, actress and author, understands the balancing act of parenting and being a working mother. Her busy schedule means proactively making time for her son, Kiyan, and helping him set his priorities in school, sports and life. She shares her top rules for parenting successfully to help guide other parents who are navigating the ups and downs of family life. Rule 1: Set priorities "The most important thing to remember as a parent is that your children should always come first," says Anthony. "My schedule is hectic, and I'm often balancing several different projects at once, but my primary job title is 'Mom.' It's so important to show your children that no matter how busy you are, they are the top priority." You can achieve this by having family dinner or setting a certain night of the week to bond over a fun activity together. If you're traveling for work, set up video chat sessions to connect even when you're apart. Rule 2: Build trust "All good parent-child relationships are grounded in trust, and open communication is extremely important in building trust," says Anthony. "Make sure your child knows that they can depend on and come to you with any issues, questions or concerns, no matter how big or small." You can help build trust by showing empathy and understanding to your child and being vocal about your own mistakes. If you messed up at work, share that experience with them and talk through how you will fix the situation. When they see you're not perfect, they feel more comfortable coming to you in times of need.

Rule 3: Focus on healthy habits "Always prioritize your child's health, especially during cold and flu season!" stresses Anthony. "It's so important to me that Kiyan stays healthy and avoids getting sick so that he can be in school, play basketball and spend time with friends. To protect Kiyan and help reduce the spread of germs around the home, I make sure he washes his hands often, and we use the Lysol Healthy Habits toolkit as a resource to reinforce healthy behaviors at home and in the classroom." Visit www.lysol.com/healthy-classroom to learn more about the One Less Sick Day initiative, an innovative cold and flu education and prevention program with the goal of helping to protect kids against germs and reducing the number of sick days this school year. Make time for these real connections by turning off your phone and other distracting devices so you can focus on each other and make the time to bond. We need to be their biggest supporters and cheerleaders so that they feel empowered to achieve their goals in all aspects of life." DOGS ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN HOSPITALS BPT

For pediatric patients, being in the hospital can be a frightening, vulnerable and lonely experience, especially for those undergoing serious medical treatments. However, research has shown that dogs, with their playful, comforting and loving nature, can have beneficial, long-lasting effects on pediatric patients. According to Purdue University, interacting with animals in different environments, including hospitals, could improve our physical and mental health, as well as enhance aspects of our daily lives. Here are a few things to know about in-residence dogs and their positive impact on pediatric patients: 1) In-residence dogs are highly trained service dogs that work in healthcare settings and perform specialized tasks. They are also trained to create an emotional connection with pediatric patients, helping to provide them with joy, comfort and other medical benefits.

2) Different from volunteer dogs that visit a hospital for a short time, in-residence dogs have a similar work schedule as their human counterparts, working closely with their handlers. They often have access to non-sterile clinics and inpatient units. 3) In-residence dogs can be an integral part of a child's treatment team. They perform a range of tasks that help medical teams achieve their clinical goals. Inresidence dogs can be trained to do incredible things like keep kids calm during medical interventions, teach them how to take a pill or model how to put on a hospital gown. 4) In-residence dogs can help lower a pediatric patient's stress and anxiety by serving as a pleasant distraction. Hospital staff report that children who interact with in-residence dogs often require less medication. While in-residence dog programs have potential, they are relatively new. Out of more than 220 children's hospitals in the U.S., only a few have in-residence dog programs. By implementing such programs, hospitals could give more pediatric patients the opportunity to experience the joy and health benefits that come with inresidence dogs. Dr. Jana Stockwell, a pediatric critical care physician at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, serves as a handler for an in-residence dog named Tidings. "Our Children's dogs are full-time employees with a meaningful job to do, and on a daily basis, Tidings helps children be more engaged, encourages them to get out of bed, and even inspires them to tell us about a pet at home that they're missing," she said. "Our in-residence dogs never fail to lift the spirits of kids and adults alike." Foundation brings dogs to hospitals To fill this unmet need and further its mission to bring joy to kids battling illness or hunger, the Joy in Childhood Foundation, the independent charitable foundation of Dunkin' and Baskin-Robbins, has launched "Dogs for Joy," a program to bring inresidence dogs to children's hospitals nationwide. Dogs in this program are bred and trained as service dogs but "work" full-time in children's hospitals. Through more than $2 million in initial grants, the program will increase the number of in-residence dog programs in pediatric healthcare settings around the country and the prevalence of animal-assisted therapy as part of treatment. The Joy in Childhood Foundation invites children's hospitals nationwide to apply for a Dogs for Joy grant if they're interested in launching a new in-residence dog program or expanding an existing program. Funds awarded cover costs for launching and maintaining an in-residence dog program at a hospital, including adoption of the dog, training of select staff, dog food, dog grooming needs, dog cheakwoolfolk.com toys CKW-THE CHEA K. Simplify Your Morning Routine to Get More Out of Your Day (Family Features) Some people wake up each morning refreshed, bright-eyed and ready to take on the day. Others slap the snooze button repeatedly and drag themselves begrudgingly from a cocoon of blankets. Whether you embrace the morning or muddle through, there’s little doubt that those early moments set the stage for the day ahead. Give yourself the opportunity to focus on what matters most each day with these tips to simplify your mornings. Prepare the night before. Many of your morning tasks will flow more smoothly if you take time to plan the night before. Consider what you’ll wear and ensure your outfit is clean and ready for the next day. If you brought work home, collect everything back into your bag or briefcase so nothing gets left behind in the morning rush. Stick to a routine. Especially when you’re groggy, it can be easy to miss important steps. There’s no right or wrong way to go about your routine, but make it consistent. If you follow the same general pattern every day, habits will form so you can cross each task off your list in order. Fuel up naturally. Busy mornings make it tempting to skip a morning meal, but a nutritious breakfast can help you reach optimal physical and mental function. When pouring your morning cup of coffee, consider non-dairy creamers. Simple, easy-to-pronounce ingredients like almond milk, coconut cream and real vanilla go into natural bliss Half and Half, providing an innovative, plant-based twist on the classic coffee creamer. Additionally, Oat Milk creamer is another nondairy option that can replenish your body for the day ahead. Each flavor is crafted to offer simplicity and bliss in your morning routine. Build in time for exercise. Get moving with some light exercise to get your blood pumping and metabolism revved up. Exercise need not be strenuous or lengthy. Even a half hour of yoga or brisk walking can jumpstart your system. Remember part of exercising is the nourishment that takes place before and after to refuel. Unplug at breakfast. Once you find the discipline to regularly enjoy your breakfast at home, take the enjoyment one-step further by declaring the breakfast table an unplugged zone. Consider stirring an option like natural bliss Toasted Coconut creamer into your coffee, which offers a flavor that can transport you to an island oasis. Use the time to enjoy a moment for yourself or mentally prepare for the day ahead without the interruption of electronic pings. Make your commute count. A lengthy commute can make a long day seem even longer, but those moments don’t have to be wasted. Use this time to find your workplace state of mind or review tasks and meetings to prioritize your plan of attack once you reach your desk. You might even use this time to give a presentation one last practice run.

THE JUGGLE IS REAL: ONLINE STUDENTS' TIPS TO BALANCE FAMILY, SCHOOL BPT SLearning how to successfully integrate coursework into an already-packed schedule comes with practice (and patience!). It never hurts to receive advice from those who've been in similar shoes. Here are three tips from juggling connoisseurs who have experience completing their degrees online while raising a family: 1) Have patience and think about the big picture Brian Hood juggled earning a bachelor's degree in software engineering online with Arizona State University (ASU) while parenting young triplets. His road to graduation wasn't without its fair share of challenges.

Balancing work, school and family can be a challenge. Some days might feel like more of a struggle than a juggle, but that doesn't mean it's impossible to have it all. In fact, one in four of the 17 million Americans enrolled as an undergraduate in a higher education institution is caring for a child, according to the National Center for Education. Many people in this position turn to online education to help make it possible to manage work, life, familyCKW-THE and earning their degree. CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

"My desk is in the middle of my house and opens to a room that doubles as my kids' playroom. To say that I had challenges while trying to listen to lectures is an understatement," Hood said. Several times throughout his academic journey, he hit roadblocks trying to balance it all. "It was so frustrating, and at times, deflating. But then you take a step back, look at the situation, and ask yourself, 'How do I do this?' When you tell yourself that failure isn't an option, it becomes much easier to focus on finding a solution, rather than being consumed by the problem," Hood said. Hood's expert tip: With young kids around, invest in a good pair of headphones, and be flexible, patient and willing to pause and re-watch your lectures. 2) Communication is key For Cherise Shockley, the key to finding balance was opening a dialogue with her family and ensuring everyone was on the same page about her online degree program. "If you are married or have kids, you have to tell your family what's going on. Explain to them that this will require a time commitment but, in the end, it will be worth it," Shockley said. Openness and honesty go a long way, according to Shockley, who earned her mass communication and media studies degree online with ASU. "You have to be organized and know that there are no shortcuts. If a problem comes up, make sure to speak up and ask when you need help." Shockley's expert tip: When challenges arise - as they inevitably do - remind yourself and your family that anything is possible with sacrifice, hard work, faith and determination. 3) Make your family a priority Robert Rutledge, an online student with ASU, earned a bachelor's degree in business with a concentration in global leadership while juggling a full-time job and parenthood. Often, while he worked on his studies, his two younger children would come into his office and ask, "Daddy, are you done yet?" In these instances, Rutledge would take time to explain to his children what he was doing and why he was doing it. His biggest piece of advice? Make your kids a priority. "It's difficult for [children] to grasp the importance of the time you're spending on your education instead of with them - especially with younger children." Rutledge's expert tip: Use study breaks as bonding time with your loved ones. Go for a walk or play a game with your children and come back to your studies refreshed and ready! Managing everything can be overwhelming at times, but remember: completing your education can open doors to so many new possibilities for you and your family, such as the opportunity to advance your career, increase your overall earning potential and even pursue a personal passion. With nearly 4.8 million parents pursuing degrees, remember that you're in good company and are now armed with some expert advice on how to successfully juggle life, learning and family. With the right support and resources, earning your degree is possible and there is no better time than now to get started on pursuing your educational dreams.

WHEN SAYING 'I DO' MEANS A MOVE: 5 TIPS FOR COMBINING HOUSEHOLDS PRESENTED BY BPT

Getting married means a whole lot of changes, not the least of which could be moving to a new house or apartment. Whether you're getting a brandnew place for the both of you or one of you is shifting all your earthly possessions to join your spouse, it's a good idea to take proactive steps to make crossing that new threshold a little easier. Here are a few tips for taking some of the stress out of moving day - for both of you.

* Declutter. Before moving, go through your possessions, as individuals and then as a team. Even if you're moving to a larger space, it's better to start fresh with items you know you like or need, and it will save you moving things you don't really want to keep. After you've each discarded old, unused or disliked items, take inventory of common household items to see if you have duplicates. Do you both have toasters, blenders, a full set of silverware? Decide as a team which of them you prefer. If the other is still in good shape, donate, recycle, or if too old and damaged, discard. * Plan ahead to save. Whether one of you is moving or you both are, you can save a lot of money by doing the move yourself. It's remarkably easy to rent a truck, and you don't need a commercial license. Driving a moving truck isn't difficult, but it is different from driving a car. Be careful to use your mirrors to navigate turns, avoid sudden lane changes or stops and make sure to allow extra time. Plan ahead by reserving your truck at least two weeks in advance. * Pack smart. Nothing hurts more than moving your prized possessions, only to find them damaged when you arrive at your new digs. Your best bet is to pick up sturdy boxes, strong tape and bubble wrap at your truck rental store so that you know everything you pack will arrive at your new home in the same condition as when you packed it. You can also get labels to use on your boxes so you know which items belong in the kitchen, the bathroom or the bedroom. * Be space conscious. You'll need about 150 cubic feet of space for the furnishings of each room in your current home. In other words, a 12- or 16-foot Penske rental truck should accommodate the contents of most small apartments or condos. When loading a moving truck, do what the pros do. Heavier items should be loaded in the back of the truck, while lighter items should be placed in front and on top. When in doubt, follow the helpful tips offered by Penske's Truck Wizard. * Share the burden. Invite friends, family and members of your wedding party to help you move - but be sure to make it a party! Ordering plenty of pizza and drinks for the postmove party will be a big hit. Perhaps you could pick out special items or photos as mementos of your friendships or family events during your decluttering to gift your moving helpers. These tips will help you and your new spouse handle the big move-in gracefully, economically and efficiently, so you can start your life together with as little stress as possible. Congratulations on the big day and the big move! To learn more about renting your own moving truck, check out PenskeTruckRental.com for details. You can save even more on the move if you qualify for AAA or military discounts at Penske, so be sure to ask. CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

5 QUICK HOME FIXES TO REST EASY www.ckwmag.com

April/May 2019

BPT

Ongoing, routine upkeep is important to ensure the house stays running. While it may seem easier to put off tasks for a later date, checking off some smaller chores now can help avoid incidents or costly repairs later. "Home maintenance can be easy to overlook when the day-to-day gets busy, but it is important to always make time for safety-related tasks," said Tarsila Wey, director of marketing for First Alert. "Simple steps such as installing and maintaining carbon monoxide alarms only take a few minutes, and are crucial to keep loved ones safe from the deadly gas." Amp up your home safety with the following quick tips: 1. Invest in light timers. Installing light timers for lights inside and outside your house can give the appearance of being home, whether you're away on vacation or you've stepped out for the night. Timers only take minutes to install and can make a world of difference when viewed from the street. By using a light timer instead of leaving a light or two on when away, you can save energy and money while still deterring any potential thieves. CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

2. Clean the gutters. With the end of winter storms come outside chores, and clearing out your gutters is important to keep your home safe. If the gutters are too full, your home can suffer from water damage to the roof and water can pour over the gutters, putting other parts of your home at risk. While you are checking the gutters, inspect your shingles to make sure they are still in good shape. This can help prevent future leakage during a spring shower.

3. Install carbon monoxide alarms. Known as "the silent killer," carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless and colorless gas, making it impossible to detect without a CO alarm. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) estimates there are more than 80,000 incidents per year. The most important step is to have CO alarms in your home - and enough of them. CO alarms should be installed on every level of the home, including the basement, and in all bedrooms or sleeping areas. CO alarms should be batterypowered or hardwired with battery back-up. First Alert offers a variety of alarms to help ensure your family is protected, including a tabletop alarm with a 10-year sealed battery and digital display to see detected levels in parts per million.

4. Store valuables. Having a safe at home can prove a wise investment when it comes to natural disasters. Through fire or flood, a safe can help protect important documents, family photos and keepsakes, as well as jewelry and other valuables. For the ultimate protection, look for a safe that is both fire resistant and waterproof (not just water "resistant"). Be sure to stow the combination in a secure place and share it only with trusted family members and friends.

5. Establish a family emergency plan. Knowing - and practicing - what to do in the event of an emergency is important. Ensuring loved ones are prepared for a fire, and know to call 911 and where to meet outside the home, is crucial. Other incidents may occur as well when you need to be prepared to stay in the home, such as a natural disaster or power outage. Having a plan in place for what to do if such an event occurs, and knowing where in the home is the safest location, can be critical if an incident occurs.

An easy spring guide to a green, weed-free lawn BPT The rich green color, the soft feel beneath your feet and the iconic fresh-cut smell thriving grass enhances your property in countless ways. Spring is the ideal time to focus on your lawn, so by taking steps now, you can enjoy lush, green grass for many months to come.

These four areas will help you focus your efforts where they will make the biggest impact.

Equipment prep The first step to a successful spring lawn-care routine is to properly prepare equipment. After sitting in storage during the cool months, equipment may need a tuneup or replacement. The lawn mower is your go-to piece of equipment. If it's gas-powered, make sure fuel hasn't gone bad by starting it up and letting it run for a while. Add fresh fuel as needed. Additionally, consider bringing your mower in for a tuneup. For a modest fee, a trained mechanic will go over all the mower components and make sure everything is in tip-top shape, including blade sharpening so your mower can cut efficiently.

Lawn trimmers are another popular tool for maintaining a yard. Again, start this piece of equipment up and see how well it runs. Add fresh line to the trimmer head so you get a clean cut. Finally, gather all other lawn-care tools and designate a convenient spot in the garage or shed to store them for easy access. Mowing advice A great-looking, weed-free lawn requires proper mowing. Experts agree you should mow as soon as the grass starts to grow to remove any brown tips and encourage healthy growth. Keep the grass mowed to 3-4 inches tall. At that height, grass shades out weeds, develops deeper roots and cools the soil. Some grasses - such as Kentucky bluegrass, fescues and perennial rye grass - grow faster in cool weather. That means you mow more frequently in spring and early summer to keep it in the 3-4 inch range, and less frequently in mid to late summer and into fall. Want an insider tip to a great lawn? Leave clippings on the grass. As they break down, they return important trace nutrients to the soil. If the grass is tall when mowed, spread out any large, heavy clumps so the clippings don't smother the lawn. Essential treatments Seek out combination lawn-care products to get better results with less work. For example, just one application of Preen One Lawncare provides three treatments, so you save time while laying the foundation for a thick, green, weed-free lawn.

www.ckwmag.com

April/May 2019

First, the application prevents crabgrass seeds from sprouting and - unlike traditional weed and feed products - also kills crabgrass seedlings up to 4 weeks after germination. Second, it kills dandelions plus 250 types of tough broadleaf lawn weeds on contact, down to the roots. Finally, it feeds the lawn continuously with a slow-release 20-0-6 formula that promotes even greening and strong roots for maximum heat and drought resistance. Preen One Lawncare is recommended for many popular cool-season and warm-season grasses. Learn more at https://one.preen.com. Watering guidelines Once your lawn starts growing, water becomes an essential component for it to thrive. A healthy lawn needs about an inch of water per week to stay strong. This can be a combination of rainwater and water you apply yourself. To reach the entire root structure, water should soak the soil 6 to 8 inches deep. The morning is the best time to water grass. Temperatures and winds are typically lower in the morning, which means less evaporation. Strive to water grass before 10 a.m., but if you must do so later, wait until after 4 p.m., when the sun is less intense. How do you know the amount of water your lawn is getting? Invest in a rain gauge to monitor precipitation. When using a sprinkler, set out a few empty tin cans in different places to measure water application. Unsure if you need to water? Try the footprinting test. Walk across your lawn and if your footprints are still visible after 30 seconds, it's time to water. Healthy, well-watered grass will stand back up quickly after you walk on it. Set the stage for great grass this spring with these four easy tasks. A little effort now will ensure a lush lawn through summer and beyond. CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

Home fire sprinklers are dependable. They not only save lives; they protect property and possessions (reducing fire damage by as much as 81 percent). Most insurers offer sprinkler discounts that lower your homeowners' premiums. "New homeowners have a great opportunity to ensure their houses are optimized for fire protection," notes Lorraine Carli, HFSC president and vice president of outreach and advocacy for the National Fire Protection Association. "Start with working smoke alarms on every level, and prepare and practice a home escape plan. Create a complete system of fire safety by asking for home fire sprinklers. Here are the basics: * Your sprinklers will be customized for your home, ensuring proper protection for your unique layout. Usually the sprinklers are connected to the household water main. In areas where there is not a city water supply or well water, a tank and pump are typically used for water supply. Piping is hidden behind the walls and ceilings. * There are several kinds of sprinklers made just for homes. Some can be hidden behind round plates. Some sprinkler companies offer custom painted sprinklers to match your dĂŠcor. * Each sprinkler is individually activated by heat, so the entire system does not activate. Each sprinkler has a temperature-sensitive glass bulb. If a fire starts, the high heat from it breaks the glass, allowing the water to flow onto the fire. That controls or even puts out the fire, allowing you and your family to escape. * You need not worry about your sprinklers being set off by smoke alarms operating, burnt toast or cigarette smoke. They're designed to operate from the high heat of a fire, usually between 135-165 F. Your family's fire safety is in your hands! Ask your builder for home fire sprinklers. The best time to install fire sprinklers is when the home is being built, while walls and ceilings are open and accessible. Learn the facts about home fire sprinklers from the nonprofit Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition, a non-commercial educational organization that offers free information and resources. 3 Tips to Create Your Dream Closet (Family Features) If you’ve ever opened your closet doors and been depressed by what you see, it may be time to rethink your closet. In fact, according to a One Poll survey on behalf of ClosetMaid, 57 percent of women admitted having an organized closet would make finding what they’re looking for faster and easier while 3 out of 10 said an organized closet would make mornings less stressful. However, treating yourself to your dream closet and introducing a new level of organization can help alleviate those worries and provide a fresh perspective. To get started on your closet makeover, consider these tips: Assess Your Needs Before diving headfirst into a full-blown closet makeover, start by assessing any budgetary constraints as well as the physical aspects and size of your space. Determine your ceiling height and available wall space to give yourself a feel for what your area can accommodate; you may even want to consider converting an adjacent room into your dream closet. Remember to account for any sloped walls and whether you prefer a simple reach-in closet or a more elaborate walk-in. Once you’ve determined your preferences and completed your measurements, turn to your wardrobe to assess whether you need more hanging space, shelving, shoe storage, accessory drawers or something else entirely. Make Your Dream a Reality Whether you’re a motivated DIYer intent on completing the project yourself or would prefer to work with a team of designers and professional installers, there are plenty of options available to bring your dream closet to fruition. One closet system to consider if you’re seeking a completely customized, designer-inspired space is ClosetMaid’s MasterSuite 27th Avenue collection. The professionally installed line can be cut to nearly any configuration and offers a range of matte and premium wood finishes, three drawer styles, elegant hardware options and high-end accessories, allowing you the design freedom to ensure the features and aesthetic match your vision for the space. Customize Your Space No closet is complete without some personal touches. Make your closet work efficiently with some luxurious organization accessories such as jewelry trays, shoe shelving, wire baskets and drawers, sliding mirrors, valet rods, scarf racks and more. Once you have the necessary accessories and hangers, set up a systematic flow by using the zone principle. Keep frequently used items in prime real estate, accessories within reach and tuck away those rarely used items. With your dream closet complete, the only thing left to worry about is keeping it in tip-top shape. For more closet makeover tips and solutions, visit ClosetMaid.com.

RETAINING WALLS TO THE RESCUE BPT Health Contributed Article

Segmental retaining wall (SRW) units are one of the most versatile landscaping tools in the homeowner's and professional landscaper's toolbox. Retaining wall units have evolved from just being used to retain soil, transition slopes and prevent erosion. Today's SRWs can do all that plus serve as multipurpose building blocks for a variety of outdoor-living features, including stairs, columns, freestanding walls, tiered walls, curved walls, seating and more. Creative designs While SRWs still beautifully accomplish their original intent, professionals and homeowners alike can easily create hardscape features that make outdoor-living spaces more useful and enjoyable. "Our landscape designers are very inventive in their use of segmental retaining wall units, and our customers really appreciate all the features that can be created with SRWs," says Scott Arnold, manager of Villa Landscapes in St. Paul, Minnesota. Products such as the VERSA-LOK retaining wall system can be creatively adapted by homeowners and professionals to accommodate curves, corners, columns and tiers - without any special pieces. For example, one popular application is a retaining wall that employs a convex curve set into a small slope. Additional courses can be stacked against the lower courses of the wall to create a "couch" or seating area to surround a circular paver patio and fire pit installed at ground level.

Freestanding walls Freestanding walls are common applications for retaining wall units. Sometimes called garden or seat walls, freestanding walls are designed to surround the perimeter of a patio and can serve as space for seating or potted plants. They also add a measure of privacy around an outdoor-living space, and when designed with inset columns, can be a support for fencing. Tiered walls Tiered walls are a common solution for grade changes and erosion control. The benefit of tiered walls is that they look great, and the space in between the walls can be used for a patio or for perennials, shrubs, vegetables or herbs. Tiered walls add visual depth and texture to a hardscape design and can be more aesthetically pleasing than a single wall. Stairs incorporated into a tiered wall design give safe access to a home on a slope or hill. A tiered design also creates a lowmaintenance landscape, eliminating the need to mow a difficult slope. Stepping up Retaining wall units can serve as risers for steps. Stair treads can be finished with special precast stair tread units or bullnose (round-edged) paving stones. When installed in a contrasting shade or color, stair treads add interest to a hardscape design. Stairs created from retaining wall units can be placed within a tiered wall design, in a single wall or with wing walls on each side. Raised patios, built with a foundation created by SRWs, are another popular feature that is often used to replace high-maintenance decks. Can-do columns Columns created with SRWs are a versatile, beautiful and functional feature within a hardscape design. They can support a pergola, lighting or other landscape features such as statuary, and are used to finish off the ends of a freestanding or seat wall. They can also be installed at intervals within a wall design, and columns create an attractive way to frame and support fencing. The use of SRWs is limited only by the imagination for outdoor-living features. With a variety of colors, textures and configurations, the VERSA-LOK retaining wall system is one that can do it all from landscape walls designed with curves, columns, corners and steps to professionally engineered, soil-reinforced retaining walls. VERSA-LOK, the original solid, pinned SRW system, enables homeowners and professionals to create multi-angle corners, curves, stairs, columns and freestanding walls with just one type of unit, and no voids to fill or special pieces to purchase. "VERSA-LOK is the one block I do 90 percent of my projects with; it can do it all," says Stan Genadek, owner of Genadek Excavating and Landscaping in Mendota Heights, Minnesota, and the creator and host of a popular YouTube channel on landscaping, "Stanley 'Dirt Monkey' Genadek." Says Genadek: "Because of its versatility and ease of installation, VERSA-LOK is the gold standard in retaining wall systems."

TOP 2019 OUTDOOR LIVING TRENDS Sustainable solutions There is a growing interest in sustainable alternatives to wood products, which contribute to deforestation and can leave a heavy carbon footprint. Composite decking offers an appealing option that outperforms wood, with greater durability, less ongoing maintenance and fewer harmful environmental impacts. Trex decking, for example, is made from 95 percent recycled and reclaimed materials, diverting more than 250 million pounds of plastic film and bags from landfills each year.

With busy schedules and on-thego lifestyles, outdoor living spaces offer a chance to decompress, enjoy nature and connect with friends and family. Thanks to the impressive design and quality of today's outdoor products, these spaces often rival the convenience, comfort and design of the indoors. As the heart of the home shifts outdoors, following are some of the top trends that will dominate the outdoor living landscape.

Beyond decking, composite materials also can be found in today's hottest outdoor furnishings. Manufactured from recycled milk jugs and other polyethylene plastics, these high-performance, on-trend designs offer environmentally responsible options for comfortable, stylish outdoor living.

Cozy and clean As homeowners spend more time enjoying their outdoor living spaces, comfort is key. From plush cushions and throws to cozy pergolas, today's outdoor spaces are designed to evoke serenity and peace. However, trend experts are quick to point out that "cozy" doesn't equal "clutter." Clean, minimalist looks are growing in popularity, as homeowners emphasize quality over quantity. In outdoor spaces, this trend is manifesting in sleek lines, simple styles and a preference for long-lasting products. On decks, this minimalist trend can be seen in the popularity of streamlined, aluminum railings. Another must-have is outdoor cabinetry such as built-in trash bins and ice chests that can be color-coordinated to integrate seamlessly into a deck design.

Illuminated spaces From candles and tiki torches to fireplaces and integrated fixtures, outdoor lighting is another "bright" idea that is in high demand. The right lighting can take any outdoor space from invisible to inviting especially when it's integrated in innovative ways to accentuate key features. Spotlights highlighting an accent wall or tread lights incorporated into a bar top are both popular options. Adding dimmable LED lighting to the railing and stairs not only adds ambiance but also enhances safety. By choosing which outdoor elements to highlight, it's easy to change the look of an outdoor living space without moving any furniture. Decidedly DIY More homeowners than ever are feeling confident about building their own outdoor living spaces. Lighter weight deck boards such as Trex Enhance, as well as innovative, easy-to-install railing panels, have made creating a dream deck on your own easier than ever. If you are comfortable using a hammer, a power saw and a drill, you can build your own deck. Or, if you have a deck but it is showing signs of wear, you can easily resurface it in just one weekend, so long as the substructure is intact. For those ready to DIY, expert help is never more than a click away. Installation guides, instructional videos and detailed plans are readily available online.

TOP THREE KITCHEN ADVANCEMENTS FOR TODAY'S TECHNICUREAN HOME CHEFS BPT

204

The latest advances in home kitchen design and technology (BPT) Today's home chefs are smart and sophisticated. They want the latest tools to simplify their lives and make their culinary dreams a reality. This year's Kitchen and Bath Industry Show, North America's premier industry event, highlighted the top kitchen design innovations, including smart technology that helps the modern home chef achieve professional-level results in their own kitchen. Other top themes included sustainability and ways integrated technology can improve food and drink preservation, plus overall wellness. Here's what we learned: 1) Smarter appliances offer restaurant-worthy results All that practice and preparation won't get the best results without professional-grade appliances offering the ultimate in culinary precision. Today's home chefs want what professional kitchens provide, from multiple ovens to stovetop griddles and more. There's also a rise in progressive home chefs called "Technicureans" who are socially conscious consumers who are passionate about cooking as well as technological innovation. One of the luxury kitchen appliance brands that caters to these individuals, Signature Kitchen Suite, offers an industry-first 48-inch dual fuel pro range with built-in "sous vide" modality right on the cooktop, along with gas and induction. Its multiple cooking modalities and innovative technology earned the prestigious "Best of KBIS 2019" Gold Award. The sous-vide cooking technique has been the goto method of the world's best chefs for years. In sous-vide cooking, food is vacuum-sealed and submerged in water, then slow-cooked at a precise temperature to achieve perfect doneness, every time.

I2) The next generation of wine storage Wine connoisseurs and home chefs alike recognize the importance of proper wine storage. At this year's KBIS, new 18- and 24-inch integrated column wine refrigerators captured another top award from the show - the National Kitchen and Bath Association's inaugural "30s Choice Award." Based on new "Wine Cave" technology these new wine refrigerators from Signature Kitchen Suite are designed to significantly reduce vibration - a major factor that can cause chemical imbalances affecting wine quality, flavor, aroma and texture in addition to minimizing temperature fluctuations, limiting light exposure and locking in humidity. The refrigerators feature the True Sommelier app, powered by Wine Ring, helping wine collectors manage their personal cellars in a truly modern way.

"Sous-vide was the exclusive domain of top chefs for a long time," said Mark Bittman, food author, educator and host of the True to Food film series. "Now, there's sous-vide in a pro range for the home." CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

"There are a million wines in the world, so which ones should be in your wine cellar and which should accompany your dinner with friends tonight?" asked Pam Dillon, CEO and co-founder of Wine Ring. "Wine Ring makes recommendations based on your personal ratings, using its patented software - the first of its kind in cellar technology." 3) Integrated technology can improve overall wellness "We're continuing to see a convergence of technologies and design trends come together in the kitchen," said Brian Pagel, senior vice president, Emerald Expositions/National Kitchen and Bath Association, producers of the annual KBIS show. "High-end cooking is of growing interest to consumers, and that will only continue." In fact, leading appliance manufacturers now offer a variety of smart cooking platform integrations, including Innit, SideChef, Tovala and Drop, illustrating an emphasis on effortless meal preparation - whether it's step-by-step guided cooking or automated precision cooking programs proposing better nutrition. "Home chefs can now customize meals that fit their lifestyles and dietary preferences, all at their fingertips," said Kevin Brown, CEO and co-founder of Innit. "Paired with the culinary precision of their appliances, we work to elevate the at-home meal prep and cooking experience." In today's kitchens, luxury and intuitive smart technology merge to produce new capabilities that were once limited to the pros, proving that better cooking is possible through better thinking.

WANT TO BUY A HOME? DO THE MATH PRESENTED BY BPT

(BPT) It is a common misconception that a 20 percent down payment is required to buy a home. Advice to wait and save a large down payment is often based on the theory that the cost of mortgage insurance (MI), which is required when you buy with a smaller down payment, should be avoided. This may not be the best advice and is, in fact, not in line with market trends, considering the median down payment for firsttime homebuyers is 7 percent, according to the National Association of Realtors. CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

cheakwoolfolk.com

Yes, you can qualify for a conventional mortgage with a down payment as small as 3 percent of the purchase price. It is also true that you can reduce your monthly mortgage payment by paying for discount points at closing, but that can be 5 or 10 percent of the purchase price - not 20. And because every buyer's situation is unique, it's important to do the math. In today's market, it could take a family earning the national median income up to 20 years to save 20 percent, according to calculations by U.S. Mortgage Insurers using a methodology developed by the Center for Responsible Lending; a lot can change during that time, in the family's personal finances and in overall mortgage market trends. How can buying now save you money later? Consider you want to purchase a $255,000 home. A 5 percent down payment is $12,750 versus $51,000 in cash for 20 percent down. With a 740 credit score at today's MI rates, your monthly MI payment would be about $110, which is added to your monthly mortgage payment until MI cancels. MI typically cancels after five years; therefore, you will only have this added cost for a short period of time versus waiting an average of 20 years to save for 20 percent. With home price appreciation, today's $255,000 home will likely cost more in the years ahead and this will also have an impact on the necessary down payment and length of time required to save for it. There are other variables in the equation too, such as interest rates. As federal rates rise from their historic lows, so too will the costs associated with financing a mortgage. The savings a borrower might calculate today could be altogether negated by waiting even a few more years. Another factor is that rents are on the rise across the nation, leading to a reduced capacity for many would-be homebuyers to save for larger down payments. If you decide to buy today with a low down payment mortgage that has private MI, keep in mind that the monthly MI payments are temporary and go away, lowering the monthly payment over time. Again, private MI typically lasts about five years as it can be cancelled once a homeowner builds approximately 20 percent equity in the home through payments or appreciation and automatically terminates for most borrowers once he or she reaches 22 percent equity. Importantly, the insurance premiums on an FHA mortgage - a 100 percent taxpayer-backed government version of mortgage insurance cannot be cancelled for the vast majority of borrowers. So, do the math and let the numbers guide you. There are many online mortgage calculators that can help. Check out lowdownpaymentfacts.org to learn more.

5 things to know about college financial aid award letters BPT

High school students across the country will soon be eagerly awaiting financial aid award letters from colleges. For many aspiring college students and their parents, this is when things can start to get complicated. College is a big expense and it's important to have a clear understanding of the financing options to ensure students and their parents make wise decisions. According to a recent survey from College Ave Students Loans by Barnes & Noble College Insights, more than twice as many parents (69 percent) found this time - figuring out how to pay for college - more stressful than the college selection process (30 percent). Joe DePaulo, CEO and Co-Founder of College Ave Student Loans, is here to help by decoding one of the most important documents on the road to college: the financial aid award letter. 1. Financial aid award letters can be confusing. Financial aid letters vary from school to school. There is no uniform format they must follow, so each letter can vary in how they use symbols (such as L or LN for loans) and even how they calculate the cost of college. Make sure to compare how items such as scholarships, loans and work-study are applied to the bottom line.

CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

2. Know the 'net price' of college. Your letter may include the cost of attendance (COA), which is an estimate of what you can expect to pay for one year of school. Typically the COA includes tuition, fees, and room and board. To find the 'net price' at the college, subtract the 'free aid,' or scholarships and grants, from the COA. This net price - which sometimes can be significantly lower than the 'sticker' price of a college - is the amount the family is expected to pay. 3. Expect to pay more. Though financial aid award letters typically call out the "expected family contribution" (EFC), expect to pay more over the course of the year. According to the College Ave survey, 59 percent of parents said college was more expensive than they had anticipated. Parking, transportation home, club and organization fees, even dining out, can add to the bottom line. 4. You can petition your award letter. If you felt the financial aid award letter did not accurately represent your family's needs, you can ask the school to re-evaluate your financial aid offer (especially if your circumstances have changed). Contact the financial aid office and request they review your cost of attendance to ensure it includes other expenses (such as childcare) or changes in your ability to pay (job loss or medical costs), which may help you secure more money in grants, workstudy or loans. 5. Keep applying for scholarships. While some scholarship applications have many applicants, others have little competition. Be sure to apply for specialty scholarships unique to your area of educational study or even local area. Every amount helps and reduces the amount your family has to pay. One easy scholarship to apply for is the College Ave $1,000 Scholarship Monthly Sweepstakes. If you find you still fall short after scholarships and grants and federal loans in the student's name, one option to consider is a private student loan. Look for a private loan with good interest rates and flexible terms that meet your family's unique needs. Check out the College Ave Student Loans calculator to find out how different repayment plans save you money over the total cost of the loan. cheakwoolfolk.com

To do this, he: • Designs and implement community capital offerings • Help clients raise capital from their own communities in alignment with their values and goals. • Work in collaboration with wealthy investors, government entities, corporate and philanthropic foundations to create impact investment funds Bill founded Our Crowd Rocks Consulting to upend the traditional models for raising capital that has left out vast, untapped numbers of low-moderate income Black inner-city residents who want to invest in the businesses and organizations that provide real value to their communities. Our Crowd Rocks is leading a movement that is bringing new capital — by directly engaging the average person in the Black community as investors, real estate developers, and entrepreneurs — to the new crowd economy — an economy that is open, democratized, resilient, just, and sustainable. This movement of “crowd capitalists” is questioning the old paradigms and bringing new models to the table that expand the capital aggregation options for nonprofits and social enterprises that are more democratic and values-driven. A COMMUNITY SPIN ON OPPORTUNITY ZONES BY BILL HUSTON CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

cheakwoolfolk.com

A Community Spin on Opportunity Zones The Opportunity Zone (OZ) provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act spawned a new marketplace and active national discussion around what it means to invest in underserved communities across the country. The tax incentive can accelerate solutions to the challenges that the community and economic development finance industries have been working to solve for decades. Wealth Inequality is The Problem What is the best way to address the massive inequity in economic activity, economic growth and private investment across U.S. communities? The West Louisville Opportunity Zone Fund has a solution that we are addressing with our fund. How do the people in these underserved communities participate in the wealth building potential of this new development? If the development is driven by external funding that may result in some employment opportunities how does this address the wealth inequality? The Promise and Potential We see the promise and potential of Opportunity Zone Funds as a powerful tool when coupled with crowd investing and place-based impact investing to address the wealth inequality. We believe that in order to change who gets funded we must change who is doing the funding. Crowd investing provides an opportunity for the residents of the zones a seat at the table in the form of investors or a partnership opportunity as co-developers. Innovative New Strategies The Opportunity Zone incentive alone will not make a bad investment good, nor is it a magic bullet that will eliminate the immense wealth gap. Opportunity Zones will not replace public or philanthropic grant dollars but will provide a new mechanism to infuse capital into these communities that have been disinvested for decades. The new opportunity is for this public and philanthropic capital to be infused into these communities as place-based impact investment dollars coupled with alternative funding like Direct Public Offerings and Crowd Investing. If the relationship between funder and the funded remains the same, then the results will remain the same. Opportunity Zones as Empowerment Tools These new and innovative funding mechanisms must empower the people in these communities to receive funding that creates entrepreneurship and real estate development and provides them with the opportunity to build wealth as investors and owners of these projects. The legal framework is embodied in the crowd investing coupled with Opportunity Zones and place-based impact investment to create

innovative and unique new opportunities to proactively engage wealth inequality. What the new Opportunity Zone incentive does is draw much-needed attention to the inherent value of the quality and character of the human assets in the zones. Crowd Investing Ecosystems The creation of integrated crowd investing ecosystems that engage the development of both the human and financial capital that capture the potential and promise of Opportunity Zones is required to make a lasting impact in these census tracts. It is worth noting that these areas didn’t develop independent of the larger economy. It was government policies and the business community that acted upon these policies that caused many of the disparities in wealth in these communities. Just like these policies were created and implement to create these communities and the massive wealth inequalities that exist today we can create new innovative policies like Opportunity Zones that correct the decades of access to capital without punishing the wealthy today but there must be equity in the way these policies are implemented. Opportunity Zones and Innovation The Investing in Opportunity Act of 2017 caught the attention of mayors and entrepreneurs as well as developers and investors. They all saw the promise to increase economic opportunities for the many communities that have increasingly watched those opportunities slip away. By providing capital-gains taxes for long-term investments in low-income communities across the country. These “opportunity zones with their enhanced tax incentives are intended to stimulate commerce and create jobs in economically distressed communities. Opportunity Zones and Community Capital Opportunity Zones have created a new marketplace and discussion around investing in underserved communities across the country. The tax incentive coupled with community capital, place-based impact investment, and crowd investing has accelerated unique and innovative solutions to the challenge how to best address the massive inequity in economic activity, economic growth and private investment across disinvested. communities. How does having developers and investor from outside the Opportunity Zone communities develop and invest in projects provide an opportunity for people in the Opportunity Zone to build wealth and the human capital needed for economic and social mobility? Fund Development Innovation No longer do the people living in these newly created Opportunity Zones simply wait for well financed investors, developers, and philanthropist, to come to the rescue of the community with the promise of building affordable housing and creating jobs that have CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

kept these communities disinvested and impoverished for decades. There is a new call from community capital proponents that provides investment opportunities in both human and financial capital. Today these Opportunity Zones can infuse new innovative digital technology, and financial structures that allow people that live in these communities to truly take part in American capital formation and wealth building that they have been denied for so long. Do Opportunity Zones Provide New Pathways to Wealth Creation? How do we structure Qualified Opportunity Zone Funds, so that everyone over the age of 18 can invest in the opportunities? If people in the community want to create Opportunity Funds using Reg CF will the impact investing community support these in the form of community foundation, bank CRA, or corporations invest in these new developers, investors and entrepreneurs? This is the only way that there is going to be true systemic change in the immensely bifurcated economy that is typified by those with wealth and access to wealth and those that are shut off for capital and wealth building opportunities. Crowd Investing for the Black Community Crowd investing is essentially the opposite of the mainstream approach to business finance. Traditionally, if you want to raise capital to start a business, launch a new product, or develop real estate you would need to pack up your business plan, market research, and prototypes, and then shop your idea around to a limited pool or wealthy individuals or institutions. These funding sources included banks, angel investors, and venture capital firms, really limiting your options to a few key players. In the Black community, the number of Black founders obtaining funding from these sources is dismal at best. Black Americans’ entrepreneurial experiences contrast dramatically with these groups. Modern disadvantages experienced by blacks include racial segregation, low levels of earnings, lack of wealth, poor education, lack of experience in a family business, employer discrimination and difficulty in getting a loan. In April 2000, a congressional study found that “Most banks largely ignored AfricanAmerican neighborhoods, even those with above-average incomes,” forcing many blacks to depend on expensive and abusive lenders. In addition, while the average white family’s wealth in 2009 was $113,000, the average black family’s wealth was a fraction of that, $5,700. These liabilities make it harder for blacks than other groups to obtain loans, lines of credits and other financial services which are crucial to starting and running a business.

You can think of this fundraising approach as a funnel, with you and your pitch at the wide end and your audience of investors at the closed end. Fail to point that funnel at the right investor or firm at the right time, and that’s your time and money lost. Crowd investing platforms, on the other hand, turns that funnel upside down. By giving, the entrepreneur, a single platform to build, showcase, and share your pitch resources, this approach dramatically streamlines the traditional model. With crowdfunding, it’s much easier for you to get your opportunity in front of more interested parties and give them more ways to help grow your business, from investing thousands in exchange for equity to contributing $20 in exchange for a first-run product or other rewards. Shifting Dollars from Consumerism to Local Crowd Investing May 16th, 2016 the SEC Rulings on crowdfunding intermediaries went into effect and today ordinary Americans can collaborate end masses to give small individual amounts of funding to startups, small businesses, and real estate developments online through crowd investing, and become shareholders in the process. When people understand the power of local crowd investing and begin to pull from their bank savings, mutual fund accounts and begin investing 1 percent of their disposable income in order to put their money to work in their own communities. Crowd investing will have the power to change how African-Americans from all income levels make decisions about where to put their money and how to spend that money. Buy The Block Crowd investing isn’t a new way of investing, but as we transform the way we see ourselves as participants and investors in companies as well as customers there will be a paradigm shift. Crowd investing will make investors into local companies a shareholder and brad advocate leading to the birth of a new locally driven capital market that brings new access to capital for inner-city community entrepreneurs. To help shape and guide this new investment market, crowd investing platforms like Buy The Block are working hard to help ordinary AfricanAmericans understand the power they wield as crowd investors and how they can participate in this social and financial revolution. CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

cheakwoolfolk.com

From Consumer to Investor Crowd investing will usher in a radical transformation forever redefining what it means to African-Americans to be a crowd investor in America by bringing local crowd investing into the homes of inner-city community members in the Internet Age. If African-Americans embrace the power of crowd investing, then the most socially transformative part of crowdfunding will come from the power of local or community-based investing. The Case for Local Businesses There are overwhelming amounts of recent research from prominent economists, sociologists, and other researchers that find that small, local businesses are critical to overcoming many of our biggest challenges, from reducing economic inequality to building resilient communities. According to the Kauffman Foundation new businesses account for nearly all net new job creation and almost 20 percent of gross job creation. Takeaway According to Local Investing fostering an economy of small-scale businesses may be one of the most effective ways to close the gap between rich and poor. Civic leaders are increasingly grappling with income inequality and creating policies to foster an economy that’s based on local ownership and community-scaled businesses may be one of the most effective ways to do it. That’s the implication of new research that identifies links between corporate consolidation and the widening gap between the rich and poor.

How to get promoted: 3 secret skills for success BPT

www.ckwmag.com

Regardless of your career path, getting a promotion is often a professional goal. Being recognized and landing a promotion can provide a variety of perks such as more money, increased influence and more control over your daily routine. So how do you land that promotion? It comes down to building key skills such as self-development, listening and communication. Fortunately, online learning platforms like LinkedIn Learning can help you develop these skills to get to the next level in your career. Here are a few secrets to taking the reins and getting noticed - and promoted - in your career.1. Prove that you're capable of self-developmentThe difference between being a "highpotential employee" versus a "highperforming employee" means everything to your advancement, and to the company where you work. While a high-performing employee does their job well, their performance review will look similar from year to year, revealing little about their potential for moving up. A highpotential employee, on the other hand, shows a willingness to push themselves to learn new skills, take on more responsibilities and be open to lateral moves - especially if that means mastering new abilities.

How do you become a highpotential employee? Demonstrate your capacity for self-development by actively soliciting feedback from others to learn how you can grow and improve, and proactively take on opportunities to increase your skill set.2. Be a strong listenerIn today's world, there's a misconception that dominating the conversation means you're a leader, but the opposite is actually true. Being a good listener is vital to being a strong leader, and a crucial component to earning that promotion.By taking the time to understand others' perspectives, needs and concerns, you'll be better prepared to communicate your ideas and solutions, and to persuade others to come on board. This is essential to leading, whether it means a small group or an entire corporation.Active listening is an art - it is underrated and takes significant practice to master. Identify a leader in your organization who is a strong active listener and watch how they lead. You can also master this skill by taking a course on active listening as part of your own career development.3. Communicate with purposeBoosting your communication skills is critical to being both a leader and a team player. Demonstrate to your manager and your team that you know how to address the bigger picture, and show how your work ties to the overall company strategy.

Express your vision of the larger mission or goals of the organization, as opposed to getting caught up in the details. How you express yourself also makes a huge difference. Be concise, purposeful and confident in your statements. This will help you build a strong executive presence and build trust among you and your colleagues.Don't wait for a promotion to come to you. Now's the time to be proactive and focus on growing your skill set. Show what you're learning by actively taking on new challenges and communicating with purpose and confidence.
